Interesting discussion about names!

My husband is Chapin, his father was Thomas Chapin, (called Chapin) and our son is Michael Chapin. The name came from a relative a couple of generations ago. We had one grandson who died at age 5, named Frank Chapin, and the latest is an adorable great-grandson named Wesley Chapin. We're really pleased that someone is carrying on the name. None of them will have my husband's last name, though, as our son didn't have any children.  :(

My small high school graduation class had four Marys. To make things less confusing, they were Mary, Mary Lib, Mary Krys (short version of her last name) and Mary Lou.

I put a lot of thought into my kid's names. I didn't want nicknames or for their initials to spell something.  Except for Michael being shortened to Mike by his friends, I succeeded!

Angelface - I hope your cat warms up to her new home. My sister-in-law had a similar experience with a dog she adopted. It took weeks but the dog finally came out of hiding and is now the most loving pet they could ask for. Makes you wonder what the poor cat's life was like before.

Another beautiful day here. I should get out and do something!

I incorporated my Dad's name into my sons.  Worked for me.  :)

Making potato salad today.  Just waiting now for the eggs to cool and the potatoes to cool down.  The rest of the fixings are marinating while we wait.  :)

Mary Ann.................

I concur with Larry's comment about your laptop/pillow use.
Very easy to overheat without a hard surface beneath it.

MaryTx.  Jeffrey Allen Good choice.  I never like a child to use their fathers name or any grands if those people still alive. Was always under the  thought that was not suppose to be done.  I didn't have boys and the grands got fathers name as the middle. Doesnt seem to be wrong in the USA.

Don, with my older laptop, I have a board that is slightly larger than the computer that I put under the computer, hoping the feet on the computer will give enough space because that vent is under the computer.  As the computer is old, I have had trouble with it overheating and shutting off.  The W-7 I am using now has the vent at the side and I do have the computer on my lap.

Jeanne - And why is it supposed to be wrong for sons, etc. to have their father's names? It's very common here and as far as I know always has been. Lots of Jr.s and II or IIIs. Think of our Presidents...........one that comes to mind is John Kennedy and his son John Jr.

Good night all!

Mary Ann

Norm was Jr and we called him Jun until after my dad died.  Two of his sons had family names for their second name - Timothy Norman and Terrance Willis (his maternal grandfather's name).  I've told many times of who I was named for.

My big thing with names is that others spell them right as our names are unique with us.

Mary Ann - Your post reminded me of my daughter, Lauri. In the 3rd grade her teacher kept insisting she spelled her name wrong........that it was Laurie! Imagine what it must be like for  children with the unusual spellings of their names today.

angelface555

For a good example;

Caryn, Carin, Karen, Carys, Karren, Karin, Karenne, Karyn, Karon, Kehrun, Kehrhun, Kerun, Charin, Charen, Kharen.

Historically, I have only run into one group of people for whom it was forbidden to name a son after his father;  but I do perfectly understand that this does not rule out other groups with such restrictions that I have not read about.  I refer to those of the Jewish faith.

My understanding is that the tradition (not a law) actually is that you must not name a child after a living relative or person.  It is alright if the person has died before the child is born.  And this was the culture of Ashkenazi Jews, not Sephardic ones.

My oldest is named for his father, and is a Junior.  I find juniors an inconvenience within families in many ways, and now prefer the Jewish attitude in this matter;  but more than that, I am against absolute laws about these very trivial and within families matters.  Let folk do what has meaning for Them is my attitude.

And Beverly, you must have seen your name spelled Beverley zillions of times!  Hundreds?  Well, a couple of times, mebbe?

Mary Page - Yes! On my birth certificate, for one!  ;) And on my passport.... P. Roe always spelled my name with the "e".

Some Jewish friends of ours told me that it was their tradition to name a child after a relative who had passed on.

Angelface - That's a good example!

angelface555

On the maternal side of the family, there was a tradition,(of which I was a part); that is still going on. To give you a small example, my maternal great grandmother was Alicia Marie, my grandmother, Elizabeth Marie, my mother Helen Marie and I, Patricia Marie.

We are all second daughters. I wanted to continue this with my own daughter, but I ended up using Marie as a first name for my only child. And Gabrielle because at the time I could not think of a good middle name. One of my cousins named her second daughter, Hester Marie.

As far as I know, there is no tradition for first, third or fourth daughters or any type for naming sons in the family. I also do not know why this tradition started except that we are an Irish, (mainly!); family and possibly somehow coming from the church traditions in the past.

Good Morning everyone

My grandmother was Anna Margaret, but I jazzed it up and named a daughter Anne Marguerite.  In effect, I named her for my favorite childhood book:  Anne of Green Gables, and my very first childhood friend who was neither a boy nor a relative:  Anne Weston, and my beloved grandmother.  I am still as enchanted with the name as I was back in 1951 when I told them at the hospital what to put on the birth certificate!
Happy Mother's Day all!  I go now to open the cards that have come in the mail this week, and later to Debi's for a celebration party.

larryhanna

Hi everyone on this Mother's Day.  It is a beautiful morning and will get into the high 80 before the day is done.  I hear the birds chirping away outside and yesterday found the tiny egg shell so know there is a baby bird in the next tucked away in the corner of the front porch.  We will go to Sunday School and Church this morning and then come home for lunch as Scott is fixing a special dish for his Mother as his gift to her.  It will be nice to spend a couple of hours with him this afternoon.

Patricia, it sounds like you have a smart cat if it already recognizes your can opener means food and knows it is more comfortable to sleep on the bed.

With regard to the discussion of names, I was actually named Larry Clinton and not Lawrence like a lot of Larry's are.  There was a band leader that my dad liked back when I was born by that name.

Beverly, I pity the poor teachers trying to pronounce some of the names that are given children plus foreign names from the many cultures we have now living in the USA.

Kelly

Hi Larry
WhenI saw the name Clinton I thought Larry is related to BC.

Yes I know it is your middle name and just me in a jokey frame of mind :)

Nice to see the variation of names and like the UK, America has  many cultures from around the world.  And more people from different cultures arriving on the Island, which I welcome.

Good Morning Everyone,
from the cool and still cloudy,
rocky coast of Maine...

I know,  as soon as Summer arrives,  I
will be complaining about the heat...
Mostly,  I would just like to be able
to see more Sunlight shinning in my
windows,  as it makes everything so much
more pleasant.

I hope that everyone has a great day,
and happy Mothers Day to all the Mothers
of this world...

Good morning, on another cloudy, rainy day, I think this is the 8th stright days of rain, wish I could send it all to Canada.

Talking about names, g.g. grandmother was Rae, my grandmother was Rae, I am gloria Rae and my son was Mark Ray, and my two grandsons are Luke Ray and Jesse Ray. None of my grands have ever married so I guess that name stops here.

Patricia, thanks for the lovely card.

I think it was the custom many years ago to name children after Biblical people.  I can’t trace the Mary in my name any further than a second great grandmother.  In one family we have Aaron, Daniel  and Noah and others I don’t remember.  My Revolutionary War ancestor was Lemuel and there was a Lemuel before him who died the year the second Lemuel was born.  My dad, Norman, was named for a family friend and that name was passed to my brother, Norm.  My mother was named by her father who was ill with typhoid fever and never saw her.  My great nieces and nephews all have their own names.  The great-great niece is Avery Michelle.

Larry, I worked with a man whose name was Larry, not Lawrence.

I hope all of the mothers have had a great day.

Farrah finally stayed out long enough for a couple of photos. Looking at them made me realize she looks so much like Beau who died in 2011 after 12 years. I also included one last goodbye photo of Sarah.

Shirley will remember Beau perhaps from earlier days and his baby kitten photos.

So sorry to hear and read about the awful fires in Alberta.  Let's hope the fires can be extinguished as soon as possible.

What an awful time for the people with many losing their homes.  My thoughts are with the people of Alberta.

And thank you to the wonderful firefighters in Alberta and firefighters around the world who do a wonderful job for us all.

Hi everyone on another bright, sunny and soon to be very warm day here in South Carolina.  Yesterday Scott fixed a good lunch for us as his Mother's Day gift as well as giving his mother a nice box of Russell Stover chocolates and a card.

This morning I have a doctor's appointment at 9:45 related to using my CPAP machine.  On the way I plan on stopping at Lowe's and returning one of my impatiens plants as it just isn't doing well like the other one.  This is the second one I will be returning but still have one left.  I hate having to do so as I liked having the two plants that looked alike in my two planters on either side of my porch.  The hanging baskets of flowers and the vegetables in the planters on the back patio are doing well.  At noon I will attend a meeting and that will be my getting out for the day.  Pat is up and plans on going to Aldi's fairly early this morning.

Kelly, no relationship to Bill Clinton.  :)  I see in the news that London just elected a Muslim mayor.  What a difficult job fire fighters have and having to be out fighting wild fires must seem like an impossible job.

Sandy, like you I prefer the days with good sunshine.

deAngel, it is about time for you all to get some sunny days.  Those fires in Canada are really terrible and they sure do need rain in that area.

Mary Ann, I know I am not the only person actually named Larry.

Patricia, nice pictures of your cats.

Kelly

Hi Larry
Yes the London Mayor is a Muslim, but also a London man born and bred.

I welcome having a Muslim Mayor.

Sorry to hear one of your Busy Lizzie plants is not up to standard, will it be replaced?

Kelly

MaryPage

Good Mornin' to all!  Yesterday was sunny and beautiful, and so is today, so far.  We have been told we will have the rains back shortly.

I have a new hibiscus plant, a bright shiny yellow one.  It thrills me to the core, and may help get through the gloomier days.

Me too, Kelly!  I am ever so pleased to hear of the Londoner whose faith resides in Islam being elected Mayor of that ancient city.  Too many folks have been convinced recently that all Muslims are terrorists, which is just not the case, as only a small minority lunatic fringe of them are.  I think this event may help alter some perceptions.  Goodness knows, others of the main religions of our world civilization have spawned off their own lunatic fringes in the past, and no doubt will again.  People the world over need to stop and think and analyze, and they will come to see things in the proper proportions.

Kelly

Hi MaryPage
Thank you for your post in relation to the Mayor of London. I will not say much about it as it might be thought this is not the place to do so.

But since London is the capital and has so many cultures, this gentleman being as I said born and bred there, then yes once more a sound choice.

Keep the  Hisbiscus watered as they do need to be watered on a daily basis in the summer.

Kelly

MaryPage, do you have a garden area at your place ? You spoke of a lovely yellow hibiscus, so I am wondering if you have a planting area ? I miss the balcony I had before I moved here as I had many potted plants there. Now I have gifts of flowers, plastic flowers, and one lonely pink African violet. I used to have 7 African violets when I had my home.
As long as we are here, let's dance.
