Another "Atmospheric River" last night, but this one wasn't as bad as the one in January.  The wind was wild, and continuous heavy rain all night.  We did not lose our power, so that was a good thing.    Another storm is predicted for tonight and tomorrow, and then the weather will calm down.

I see in the paper this morning that Robert Blake has passed away, at age 89.  We all remember him as the title detective character, "Baretta", in that old  TV series.  He solved crimes, with the colorful parrot sitting on his shoulder.  ::)  He was also a child actor, who was one of the kids in the "Our Gang" comedies that were popular in the '30's and '40's.  He will be mainly remembered for being charged and finally acquitted,  for the murder of his wife.  :o  A high profile trial with lots of TV coverage.

It keeps swirling around in my head: "I can't BELIEVE that's California!

We have been so extremely lucky here.  A very mild Winter.  No snow, no ice, no storms.  We have been luckier than the whole blooming South!

Bubble - The trigger fish, Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, is the official State fish of Hawaii.  Native Hawaiians are known for their extremely long and hard to pronounce names.  I read online about a woman who had to have her last name shortened because it was too long to fit on her drivers license!   Most people have heard of the late,  Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole: The Voice Of Hawaii.  He was known best for his ukulele-backed rendition of  Somewhere Over the Rainbow.  I have read that his recording  has been played over a billion times on YouTube!  He was a man with a standout voice and of tremendous size.

Good Morning everyone, from the cool
and cloudy,  Rocky Coast of Maine.

All is well here.
Not much going on these days.
Still wearing a mask when I go out
tryig my darndest not to get sick,
just because I don't want to pressure
my kids.      So as long as I can stay healthy
the happier everyone will be, including me.

Have a good day,  everyone!

Power still out here. Three days and two nights so far.

Hope you got that generator.

Our power was restored last night, just around 9:00.  I am so grateful to the PG&E and Cal-Trans workers, who work 24/07,  during these terrible storms.  I was dreading another overnight without heat. This house is old, not insulated, and has single pane windows throughout, so cools down quickly and stays cold.  Many many others were worse off than we were, so trying not to ever complain.

This was another wild storm, that brought down trees and power poles, onto houses, cars,  and forced closure of roads and major highways.  Strongest gust measured here in town, was 88 MPH.   Hoping this was the final storm of the Winter of 2023.

Rick - Yes, our son's generator worked well, but it's the smallest size, and not big enough to plug into the furnace . . .  only big enough to use in the kitchen to keep the food in the fridge/freezer from spoiling, and a couple of other small things, which I'm thankful for.

We have been having a tough time in our family lately.  Daughter Pam came down with serious breast cancer and has been on chemotherapy.  Daughter Debi came down with Covid.  Daughter Anne's house burned down last night.  She was here, as it was her turn to take care of me.  Son Christopher came up from Fredericksburg, Virginia to take care of me.  Anne went home to Claiborne, on Maryland's Eastern Shore.  Chip was able to change his flight plans and get home tomorrow, a day earlier than planned.

We are all unharmed, and we have the strength as a family to see this through.  A neighbor saw the flames and ran over and pounded on the door and got Greg and the dog out.  We were called here and then were up all the rest of the night.  Now the insurance adjusters have been already, and Anne & Greg have had many offers, but have chosen to stay right next door in a home owned by friends for whom it is a 2nd home they use just for the summer sailing.

So Anne & Greg can have it indefinitely, and will be able to watch over the work on their house. We are told everyone in their village, population 100, was out for the fire.  It is a Great place.

This, too, shall pass.

Marilyne

Mary Page - So sorry to hear about all the troubles in your family!  Your daughter Anne's house burning down is a true catastrophe, and a tremendous shock to her and her husband.   Wonderful that they will be able to stay right next door while their house is being rebuilt.

Hoping that your daughter Pam, will do well after her chemotherapy treatments, and that Debi will have a light case of Covid.   Lots of my family members have gotten Covid, even after being fully vaccinated and boosted.

Please keep us updated on how everyone in your family is doing?

MarsGal

That is a bit much for the family to have to deal with all at once. Best wishes for everything and everyone to come out of all this in great shape.

MarsGal

All very quiet here.

I see by the Marine Traffic website that the ships are starting to wake up from their naps, so I looked up when shipping season officially starts. The Soo Locks will officially be open on March 25. The Montreal/Ontario section and the Welland Canal both opened this morning. Yipee!

My current project is to find a replacement for my recliner chair which I have been wanting to do since last year. Sue and I are planning a trip up the Carlisle Pike to several furniture stores and then a stop at Lin's Wok (her favorite) for lunch. I am contemplating a switch to a small sofa or love seat rather than another recliner, even a futon (which is what the recliner replaced). One critical need is a material that is cat resistant.

A late good morning and HELLO to all. Kind of nice out today, even though it's overcast. Temp is above 40. I keep busy paying bills - today the Rel Estate taxes for the County got done. The next biggie is the good old IRS. Still have to check and be sure I have everything that will be needed. I only want to make one trip to the guy who does my taxes. I certainly can't do it.
All the wildlife that went south for the winter seems to be back now - except the chipmunk - and he doesn't go south, but goes underground.

Time to catch up in here!  I've been reading posts every day but our weather has bounced from below freezing to 80+º - and back again - sometimes within 24 hours. This has resulted in very gloomy days with either drizzle or high winds and is not kind to my "squeaks and creaks". So I just haven't had the energy to think of things to say.

Jackie,  Belated Happy Birthday  Looks as if you celebrated in style! And so glad you're feeling better.

MaryPage,  I'm so very sorry about the issues in your family and hope things have settled down a bit.

Marilyne, one of our weather gurus went into a long explanation of the reason for the California weather issues (which have been - and will be - crossing Oklahoma).  He said it's because La Nina ( "the periodic cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific" - according to Google  ;)) is over and El Nino hasn't started yet - so we're in a "neutral" time period. And that's causing all the storms.  ::)   The one that caused the tornado in L.A. is due here later today.

My current life is basically the necessary Domestic Duties, reading e-books, "maintenance" medical appointments and occasional family visits. No "socializing" activities.  Ho Hum.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

Good Morning everyone!

Callie, good to see you here yesterday!    I'll be hoping for your sake, that our most recent storm, does not linger long in OK!   The cold wind from the Gulf of Alaska collided with the warm wind from Hawaii, and we had what was called a "Bomb Cyclone". :yikes:   Something I hope to never see again!
Stop by Library~Bookshelf, and let us know about the e-books you've been reading?

Jackie, looks like your birthday was a good one.  How nice of your Church friends and others, to help you celebrate with birthday cake.

Mary Page,  Hope all of your family members are slowly getting back to normal?  It will take a long time to rebuild the house, but fortunate that they will be staying right next door!

Good morning to Rick and Mars Gal! :hello:

Shirley

I read the posts last night but too tired to comment. Overwhelming happenings in your family, MaryPage. Sincere sympathy for so many crisis at one time, and prayers that each one of you find a way to calm the fears and dreads that go with each problem.

Jackie, sounds like you had a great birthday! Sorry about not feeling well. My daughter & I had a "bug" (never tested positive for Covid) but knocked our sox off & ended with a sinus infection. You seem to be happy with the new life, I'd love to visit England one more time and enjoy reading your posts about "everyday life".

Callie, of all those rains you've had you could have let a LITTLE of the moisture drop on us. We had some sprinkles yesterday that showed up on the driveway but were gone at a second glance. I don't recall it ever being so dry and add the super winds, we have no moisture in the ground or air.... and dry pollen isn't helping!

Going to take my BP pill with a hard boiled egg & toast... wait an hour & do the vitals. All the people reading the heart rate are having a fit with it ranging in the 130s. It will stay high until the visit with the surgeon & his decision (April 7-8). I've fought this surgery for more than 2 years so now it is do or die time. Well, didn't mean to say all that but not going to delete.... 'tis where my head is these days. Back to breakfast!

Marilyne

Shirley -  Good to see you here in Bait & Tackle!   :hello:   Looks like we had the same breakfast . . . a hard boiled egg and toast.   Just about all I need to start the day. . . plus a few cups of coffee.  Lots of pollen here too. When I wake up sneezing in the middle of the night, I know it's going to be a bad day ahead!

You seem to be feeling better since your hospital stay, and you will  be making a decision in the next couple of weeks,  regarding heart surgery?   Hope all goes well for you.  Please keep us posted!

Happy April Oneth!!

I can't find anything in my profile information about changing my picture.  Can anyone help with directions?

Little Rock and Iowa got most of the publicity for tornadoes yesterday but Oklahoma had its own disasters.  A cloud of dust (I could see it on western horizon) blew across the state; weather gurus said it looked like the 1930's.

Then 70 out of control wildfires began.  Most of them were in central and northern Oklahoma. Traffic was stopped between OKC and Guthrie - just at commuting time.  It was a mess!!!!
Two of the biggest fires started just west of I-35 several miles north and south of me.   The wind blew them across the interstate and then spread them for many miles.  I could smell and see dust in the air - but the smoke didn't affect my area.

However, the areas they spread across are heavily timbered with cedar trees, which "explode" in flames.  That causes embers to float along in the smoke and settle on buildings, etc. farther along.  Then "pop-up" fires start.
Of course, all t.v. shows had helicopters in the air reporting and the pictures were awful.

Today is sunny, calm and almost chilly.

Shirley, we haven't had enough rain to share!  Most of it has been southeast of OKC; otherwise, it's still drought conditions.
I have a choice about taking my thyroid pill  I can either take it and wait an hour before eating - or eat and wait two hours to take the pill.  So I take it when I get up, then read the on-line paper, work 4 solitaire puzzles and check the bird-watching web cams.  (Thank you, Rammel, for mentioning those quite some time ago. I'm enjoying several.)
Then I can eat breakfast.

I've always said that if anyone wanted to throw me completely off - all it would take is to rearrange my kitchen in the middle of the night.  :D  I'm "on automatic" in the kitchen for fixing breakfast.  Not about to cook - so I eat dry cereal topped with fruit flavored yogurt and a piece of toast with peanut butter.  I prefer tea rather than coffee and found some Keurig pods that can be used for a tea bag.

Marilyne, pollen is bad here, too - and sneezes "sneak up" on me - as do watery eyes and a drippy nose.  :tissue:

Enough rambling from me.  Enjoy your day, Baiters and Tacklers. :smitten:

Hi Callie
We should have a contest, as to which of us has been having the worst/wildest/scariest storms!  :o  I think it would be a toss-up between us!  I saw weather reports on the evening news, showing your Oklahoma tornadoes, and then dust storms and wildfires!    We don't get tornadoes in CA, but this year we've suffered with hurricane force winds, bomb cyclones, and the largest amount of rain ever recorded.

Today is our first sunny day, and it looks and feels so good, although it's not what I would call warm .. . temps in the high 50's.  I'm wanting to see 75 degrees, which is average for this time of year.
Hoping that the extreme weather is over for both of us, and that we can enjoy a normal Spring from here on out.  :sun:

CallieOK

Today has been totally the opposite!  Sunny and absolutely no wind at all. Ive cleaned and filled the birdbath, swept and dumped the leaves from the patio and sat out there for more than half an hour.  Saw the first thrush of the season at the feeder and a mockingbird on the fence.
It was so nice to be outside...and Im not even sneezing...yet! ;)

RAMMEL

I managed a bit of porch time today. Sounds like the same weather as Callie, "Sunny and absolutely no wind ".  But thunder storm warning now. Mocking bird came looking for a habdout --- which he got. Always a bunch of sparrows.
