wjoan - Don't pack away those summer clothes quite yet! We had the same sudden drop in temperature here in Northern CA, but now they're saying it will be back to almost 100 degrees by Sunday! ::)

Beverly

See you all next week......Tomorrow we are flying north.  Sunday there will be a family reunion at my oldest daughter's house. I have warm clothes packed! Still having hot weather here but I've heard it will be much cooler there.

Hope you all stay well and have a good week!

wjoan

Marilynne, I checked the extended weather forecast and it lookslike we are in the same forecastl in a few days.  Thanks for the heads up.

MaryAnn and MaryPage, there are four other floors with common rooms, albeit smaller and no laid out coffee and snacks. I spoke to a neighbor who called the main office in Anchorage today.

It turns out that the man who lives here is mentally challenged and so has one of the seven main floor  apartments allotted to them. They, the company, get some benefits from the state and thus they have those seven first floor apartments available to state-sponsored individuals. It is his sister who is charging discrimination. The resident doesn't talk or socialize.

What they did, (the company); was to  email the religious group's head and say that the doors must remain open and unlocked for the residents and for fire safety. I noticed this evening that someone had put a locked, slotted box, labeled "For Refreshments" on the table next to the refreshments with a sign saying  free for residents only. I suspect that was from Francis, a resident who practically lives in that social room. He and some others regularly play cards each day.

I think the company's  issue is  with keeping everyone happy and not have to deal with further disturbance and I think having the guys in there playing bunko and other games may make them choose either the resident's apartment or a new meeting place.

It isn't fair to monopolize the kitchen and community room for two hours on Sunday and then another two hours on Tuesday and Thursday. We have many other religious groups here each Sunday and they are very welcoming and easy to get along with.

so_P_bubble

MaryPage  ;D  but that is what I do with those prescribed hours!  I am not ready to wake up just for a prescribed pill!  My body does not mind if it is not rigid 6H...

Any way, that sign is better than a donkey hat!!! :D

MaryPage

Love having fun, Bubble.  Laughing relaxes the myriad frustrations implicit in the burdens of the body.  I hugely enjoyed your impertinent solution.  Now, back to the Smart Aleck corner, Dear.

larryhanna

Hi everyone on this cloudy Friday morning.  I am happy to start the day feeling much peppier than yesterday and am looking forward to a nice day at home.  I don't intend to get the car out of the garage today.  Yesterday was not a good day for me but I did get most of what I planned on doing accomplished.  If I hadn't made a commitment to my old friend to take him to coffee yesterday I probably would have stayed home.  However, he looks forward to Tuesday and Thursday's when he has a ride to coffee.  I did elect not to attend the Wisdom group at church and after I took him back to his retirement residence I did stop at Walmart and used the cart to get the few items I needed.  I came home and skipped lunch and went and laid down for about three hours, then got up and took Pat to her appointment and we decided to get a quick dinner out so stopped at Chick-fil-A.  I then went to bed about 7:30 and didn't get up this morning until about 7:30.  The housekeeper will be here later this morning and the yard was cared for yesterday afternoon.  I plan on making some chili, which we will probably have for our dinner this evening and maybe a couple of other things.  That is going to be it for today.

MaryPage, hope the topical gel soon gives you relief from the bursitis.  I have experienced that only one time in my life when I was much younger and it affected my chest.  I still remember how painful it was with every breath.

deAngel, hope you got some good rest last night.  Nice that your DIL could spend the three days with you.

Patricia, thanks for the Blue Apron link and will check it out later today to see if it is available in our area.  Hard to believe that people would have a locked door Bible study as would think they would want all who cared to join them.  I am glad your apartment management has hopefully dealt with the situation.  I would not care to attend a two hour Bible study.

Joan, it sounds like you might want to delay retiring all of your summer things if warm weather will be returning.

Bubble, I have always wondered how pills know that it is exactly 6 hours between doses or that they are suppose to expire on such a date in the future.  I know we are getting very sophisticated with things, but really!!  Do your have a "Smart Aleck" corner as MaryPage implies?  :)

so_P_bubble

Not here LarryHanna, but MaryPage obviously has one!    :2funny:

MaryPage, Bursitis is no fun, neither is cellulitis. I  have it now starting anew  on my legs and the doctor put me -again- on high dose of antibiotics.  It hurts, it itches, it makes me tense and grumpy but I still try to keep smiling.  You are right, laughing certainly helps.

MaryPage

Well, it does.  It surely does.  What is that saying I use so often?  "If we don't laugh about it, we'll cry!"
I only tease people I'm extremely fond of.  Come to think on it, Bob teased me constantly and relentlessly;  it was his chief source of Joy.  But I knew he loved me to the ends of the earth, so it was worth it.  I used to get SO MAD at the ease with which he would one up me!  I used to threaten to hit him up the side of the head with a piece of two by four.  He would laugh until he had tears squeezing out of his eyes.  My but I wish I had him back here teasing me!
OK, OK.  You can come out of the corner now.  And I'm sorry about that confounded cellulitis.  See if you can find an enthralling movie on the telly.

Jeanne Lee

Larry, my stepmother also questioned how pills knew what part of the body they were supposed to go to   :D

WJoan, Last week I open my cedar chest ( given to me 62 years ago by my husband) Took out winter cloths and blankets and etc.  the put most all the summer cloths away. With winter cloths I can hardly close the lid, but with the summer things there is more room left. I do this twice a year.  Other wise my old TV sets on the chest along with my old VCR.
That TV is over 15years old, but I still can show my old VCRs on it.

I have no patience for the telly these days, but a good book... It's like a best friend!

MaryPage

I, too, prefer a book, but when in pain sometimes just cannot concentrate on reading.  So, if I cannot nap for release, I try a good movie.

so_P_bubble

My alternative to a good book is the computer - probably working on PaintShop or looking for images to use in jigsaws.

wjoan

Haven't watched my TV in over 13 years,  Don't miss it either.  I am with Bubble, rather read a good bo0ok

Mary Ann

While I would not miss my TV, I do have some favorite programs.  If something interferes with my seeing them, so what!  But I do watch daily.

Mary Ann

angelface555

Well, we all got papers slipped under our doors with a resolution from the company, and a note asking us all to attend a building meeting today.

No closed or locked doors, no charging for food, and everyone is to be respectful of everyone else. It came as no surprise to me, altho Francis says he still thinks they should meet elsewhere.

We had a good meeting although nothing really got solved, as to new elections and new committees. One lady has been asked to leave due to excessive noise and fighting with her neighbor, but other than the communal room issue, all is pretty much the same.

We are still having rain, permanent white, cloudy skies, and at this point, everyone is simply expecting snow at anytime.

As to TV, I never really got attached to it and I read several books weekly, play with PSP and take lessons. I need to socialize more, but I've been saying that for years and haven't attempted it yet.

Joy

Patricia,  where I live we have some confrontations periodically.  Seems that some people when they move in feel they have to change everything around.  Several months ago, there were two "ladies" who actually got into some very verbal confrontations with some of some long-time residents.  Actually using very abusive language,  leaving nasty notes on doors, and almost got to some physically abuse.  Luckily, it didn't get that far. Some of us wondered if the management was in a position to actually evict people for such carrying on.  I don't think that was an option here.  Things have quieted down, but these two individuals keep to themselves.  And, all this started over a "card game".  Almost like little kids fighting.  It was very disturbing to hear about what was going on.

I try to keep to myself and have just started back to playing dominoes a couple times a week.  This is with a group who I have been friends with since I have been here.  I try to speak to everyone and treat everyone the same. Some residents I am more friendly with than others, but I do try to be nice to everyone.  Not everyone is like that.  I was so surprised a few days ago to hear some people talking about one of the ladies, who I am friends with.  I have never seen the side of this person as some were describing.  I just listen and keep quiet.  Things like that don't make me feel any different towards a person. Some people just have nothing more to do than complain about one thing or another.

Joy
BIG BOX

angelface555

Joy, here they adhere to the rules and they have cameras in all of the public areas. However, they do try conflict resolution before kicking one or both out. This lady was as you described and she saw no one's views but her own. It is a two strikes and you are out policy and at all four entrances, there are glassed bulletin boards that contain legal signage saying so and so is not allowed on the premises. Having spent the majority of my employment in "corporate," I have a good idea of what will and will not be resolved.

I tend to be a hermit and so I think I am one of the last to hear about things. There are elevators, common rooms and laundry rooms at the center of each floor, and they post events, meetings and whatnot there every couple of days. But there are 15 apartments on my side of the hallway, before that bulletin board and I can go a long time before I see what's on it. I really am a hermit.   :-[

MarsGal

Good morning, everyone.

It is cooling down here, finally, maybe, I hope. It was 59 when I got up and is to go only to 75 today. Yesterday it went up into the 80s.

As for Books vs TV, I think along the same lines as Seneca: "Leisure without books is death."  I can do without the TV, but not books.

Angel, are you in an assisted living place? I was puzzled by the "No closed or locked doors, no charging for food" comment. My Mom was in assisted living and they were allowed, and even encouraged to lock their doors. It seems that some of the residents would wonder into other resident's rooms and sometimes take things. Again, they were allowed to keep their medications with them, but only if they kept them locked; otherwise, the staff would come around with the needed meds each day. The place was very nice. Mom had her own TV, a mini fridge and a coffemaker. The common room had a big fridge and a microwave if she wanted to use that.

MaryPage

The rule at Patricia's is about the Common Rooms, and not the private living quarters of the residents.  If you read back a number of posts, you will see the controversy was about hogging the common room where the refreshments were and locking out other residents.

larryhanna

Hi everyone on a bright and clear Saturday morning.  It is going to be warmer today getting up to about 90 degrees.  I am looking forward to mid-afternoon as I have a ticket to a Barbershop Chorus and Quartet Concert.  This is their annual concert and is being held out our church in our Fellowship Hall.  Other than that I will work on getting our dinner prepared and a couple of other projects.  Yesterday was a nice stay at home day and I got the washing done and the chili made among other things.

Bubble, certainly sorry to hear you are experiencing cellulitis on your legs.  Hope the antibiotics take care of it.  You have such a lovely smile and you are right that laughing helps.  The older I get the less I enjoy the TV.  I very seldom watch it during the day until late afternoon and then sometimes I just don't want to watch it then as it is the same old thing over and over.

MaryPage, teasing when done right and not sarcastically can be a lot of fun.  I am starting to listen to a lot of audiobooks and not doing a lot of reading other than on the computer.  I have kept a list of what I have listened to for the last several years and am surprised to see it is rather long.  I am also trying to keep track of what books I have actually read in these last few years.

Joan, do you listen mainly to audiobooks.  Pat must have listened to a couple of thousand audiobooks over the last many years.  She like to listen and play games on her laptop while sitting in her easy chair.

Patricia, hope the snow holds off awhile or it is going to be a long winter for you all.  Hope the turmoil in your apartment building will soon be over.

Joy, it sounds like the feuding ladies in your building have reverted back to childlike behavior.  I always feel sorry for folks who never seem to be happy.  I find life is too short to waste in on anger as I prefer to be happy and joyful.

MarsGal, I expect many of us who write on these boards were raised with radio and not TV and that taught us to use our imaginations.  It seems with TV one doesn't really have to use their imagination to picture what is going on.

Jeanne, your mother obviously had an inquiring and logical mind.  I find I often ask myself is this logical and I don't like it when I hear on the news that all Americans or others like this or don't like that.  They didn't ask me (of course if they did I probably wouldn't tell them anyway).

deAngel, it sounds like you are about ready for the colder weather.  Is your television heavy to move off of the cedar chest?  We have the cedar chest my father gave my mother 76 years ago when they got married.

wjoan

Larry, yes listen to audio books while I play Solitaire on my computer.  Cannot just sit idle.  Have to be doing something with my hands it seems.   Not counting the ones I d/l I go thru about 70 books a month.  Some I do not finish if there is violence in them.  Do not like violence.

Mary Ann

Larry and Patricia, on weather radar two or three days ago there was snow in the Rockies of Colorado.  I think it was far west of Denver.

I just had a successful end to my Indy trip of last week.  I think I told of not being able to find a ring I had put in the last minute and I could not remember where.  Today I emptied my purse which has five zippered compartments and in the last place I could look, in a corner of the pocket, there was the ring.  Big WHEW!

Mary Ann

halkel

Good Morning Everyone!

Larry, you speaking of radio and having to use your imagination and TV doesn't give you that opportunity, boy, they sure don't and I am not very fond of the images they do present.  Some shows allow nothing for the imagination, gore and sex are prevalent and graphic.  We tape most shows now days and fast forward when some of the junk is presented as entertainment.

I too never turn the TV on until about 3 in the afternoon and then watch Cauvto and the wife likes to watch Judge Judy......I think if the truth was known she is legally an arbitrator under California law.  Looked it up on Google and I was right.

Ah, only in America.... ;D

Sandy

Congratulations Mary Ann for finding
the ring that you had been searching for.     I know that
feeling.   If I am not careful,  I miss place
items all the time.    Usually they are just outside
of my "field of vision"...  but unfortunately,
I lost my teeth and have never recovered them.

:'(

To replace them,  will cost me  around $2000 ...
I am just not motivated to do so,  since I only wear them to
"for show" .....

But I know how glad you are to find that ring...
Congratulations.

I love my tv,  my computer,  my police scanner,  and my
"Talking books",  and living overlooking the main
street in a busy little city.   I try to take advantage of what
is available to me.     I am also quite the "introvert"  and stay
out of the "issues" that sometimes pop up in
communities like Senior Housing, here with over
150 apartment spread over 6 floors.

I guess that I am inspired externally,  and not
yet internally...

:flush:

Sandy, Marsgal, we have 196 apartments over five floors, and while this is a privately owned building, they do get some benefits from the state. So they provide seven first floor apartments to state paid for physically or mentally challenged individuals.

Otherwise, you had to be 62 years of age and disabled to live here. There is a five to a seven-year waiting list. The company has seven buildings total in town for seniors from just senior living to entirely needing assistance to those with dementia. I have been in only one other building that the company owns.

We are allowed one pet, and we have a floor council as well as a building council or board, manager, and 24/7 maintenance and security. We have a key fob that opens our apartments, outside doors, similar to those used with vehicles and basically, in-house matters are usually run by elected committees. It is like any nice apartment building except it is for seniors.

Then there are senior public or state buildings, private homes taking in seniors needing assistance for pay and no doubt others I'm not aware of.

I hate misplacing items and I do so much of it lately! I couldn't find my cell phone one day and it took an anxious night wondering if I had lost it away from home.

Thinking back the next day, I remembered a last call at home and that I had changed the photo on the main screen. This necessitated another wild search of the apartment and I finally got the idea of pulling out the couch next to the end table. And there it was, under the couch.....

Mary Ann

Patricia, your pulling out the couch to find your phone, reminded me of a cartoon when those phones first came out.  It was Arlo and Janis and the phone was ringing and Arlo was looking in and under everything, especially the couch, to find the phone before it quit ringing.

I bought my ring probably at least 60 years ago when I was working; I've been retired 30 years and I know I bought it long before that.

Tom took his DIL to Merrillville to catch up with his son who has been in Indy for a wedding that will take place tonight.  I think James is an usher but there was a bachelor party yesterday.

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn, I had an odd fascination with opals many years ago and saved to buy a few small  pairs of earrings, rings and some necklaces, nothing fancy or really expensive from Zales. I still have them but since I'm retired, I never wear them, sad. I used to be up at six every morning, washed, brushed, jewelry applied and ready to go meet my public. Now I can go all day in my apartment in my robe and slippers.

I remember those series of weddings. In my mid-twenties to mid-thirties, I used to joke that being a maid or matron of honor or a bridesmaid was my second job!  :)

MarsGal

Thanks for the explanation, MaryPage. I missed the earlier posts.

Halkel, for me it is The Five and Special Report.
