Hi everyone on this election day here in the USA.  It is going to be a very nice day here in South Carolina for the folks who go to vote.  We have had early voting in this State as several others are doing.  However, I am sure the lines and waiting time will be long today.  It is in the 40's here this morning and predicted not to get out of the high 60's this afternoon.  The only thing on the schedule for today is to take Pat for her 11:30 am chiropractic treatment.  I may make a quick trip to Walmart to pick up prescriptions for us both.

Yesterday I had a pleasant surprise in that Pat went to COSTCO with me and was able to get the last available electric cart so she could get around the store.  She hadn't been in a store, other than restaurants, for over 3 months.  I ate a quick early lunch while we were there as didn't have much time when I got home before needing to leave for my Monday noon meeting.  The rest of the day was spent resting and taking it easy.

Mary Ann, I am with you and I expect all who stop by here in being glad that today has finally arrived and the political season will be over for at least a little while.  Our minister posted the following on his Facebook page yesterday and think those of us who attend church will enjoy it.

Half Of Congregation Dies Of Starvation As Sermon Goes 15 Minutes Over Time

RUSSELLVILLE, ARâ€"Roughly half of the churchgoers at First Baptist Church Russellville died of starvation Sunday after the pastor tragically went 15 minutes over his standard sermon time, local sources confirmed.

“We don’t know if the pastor simply lost track of time due to passion while preaching the word of God, or if something more nefarious was going on,” police chief Dwayne Carroll told reporters Monday morning.

“It’s hard to imagine that Pastor Frank did not notice the panicked glances at phones and watches, along with the thunderous stomach growls and moans of agony reverberating throughout the sanctuary within minutes after he began to breach his normal closing time,” the chief continued. “Whatever the case, he went well over his standard allotted time for delivering his message, and roughly 75 people in attendance simply could not hold out, succumbing to their hunger before the the end of the church service.”

Thankfully, the other half of the congregation was able to make a speedy exit as soon as they were dismissed, frantically rushing out the doors and flooding all local restaurants for emergency sustenance.

“Pastor Frank should have known the dire consequences of a church service going even a minute past its normal ending time,” one survivor noted to reporters. “I mean, people have to eat.”

Police Chief Carroll confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

MaryPage, Firehouse Subs do have a veggie sub and their turkey is good.  However, this is not my thing.  I have never encountered any fat, gristle or such in any of the subs I have had there.  Pat really likes their salads.  I hope you enjoy your lunch out today with Rob.

Patricia, I enjoyed your information on the different Native tribal members in Alaska.  It is interesting how different cultures have different ways of doing things.

Mary Ann

Larry, we did not have the excuse of starvation during our service and it wasn't 15 minutes past, it was more like a half hour.  But!  We had communion and that should have satisfied our stomachs!!!

We are at 60 degrees now and should go higher, I don't know if we'll hit 70 degrees but we'll be close.

MaryPage, I may listen for some of the election results, but I will not stay up until the wee small hours to get the results; the news will be the same in the morning.  I can wait.

Mary Ann

The minute the polls opened here today the storms started. Did the same 4years ago. I think most people had voted earlier as the polling places do not look busy . I supposes some now
who were really undecided and not wanting either one will just stay home as storm suppose to last all day. We had a couple of men file as WRITE IN FOR PRES. I never have understood the American voting system. By the time I could reg. To vote I was just to old to learn.

This one has really turned me off.  Disgusting the way has been run. I feel that it will follow along now for the next 4 years if the one person doesn't get in. Will not be   pick up toys and go home.
JeanneP

Marilyne

We like to go to the polls to vote, so we went this morning, and just got home. We didn't have to wait in line - just showed our sample ballot and signed in.  There were six voting booths in the room, and only four were in use, so we didn't have to wait for a booth either. On the way back home, we saw a number of people walking toward the polling place, ballot booklet in hand!  Looks like there will be a good turnout.  Now we wait and see what happens!

As I've mentioned before, I voted absentee and we drove to the Township Hal Saturday morning to leave my ballot.  Tom will have to drive to a nearby school to vote.  In fact, he went to that school when he was young.

Occasionally Dot comes across something of Norm's that she thinks we might like and it doesn't mean anything to her.  One thing is a notebook Norm kept of messages from people on Seniors United, probably a forerunner of SN and S&F.  Norm was on Concentric at the time and it was in 1997.  One e-mail was from a woman named Beverly and I doubt it was Beverly Pratt, but she had a daughter Donna who lost a young son named Frankie and she had a daughter, Erin.  One man was from Germany and another from Australia.  A man in NYC took a trip to Russia and I will read that story when I get to it in the book.  A couple names are Joubert and Civins.  Also Voltz (he's the German).  These stories are not online so I can't forward them to anyone.

These are stories I never knew about.  I did know Norm was on Concentric and that he corresponded with people all over the world.  The stories so far are interesting.

The water at Grand Haven is rather choppy today.

Mary Ann

Beverly

Mary Ann - I am so surprised Norm kept that e-mail.  That Beverly is me.  Frankie would have been 28 this year! Erin is 30 with two sons. I don't remember why I shared that with him.....maybe something in one of the discussions. It was one of the most difficult times in my life. Nice to know Norm kept it.

Tonight is our monthly neighborhood pot-luck. I have a pumpkin bundt cake in the oven. Seemed like a good thing to make this time of year.

Mary Ann

Beverly, I thought it might be you because I know a lot of Norm's computer friends went back that far - 20 years ago.  He had several different computer servers in those years.  So if those children would be 28 and 30 now, it was much over the 20 years of his printing the letter and other information.  I was able to keep track of his friends because he'd mention what "so and so" was doing, especially if it was interesting.  I'm anxious to read some other of the e-mails and I intend to keep them.

I know Frankie's death was a blow to the entire family.  Is Erin still OK?

I wonder if anyone has watched the Weather Channel.  I happened to turn it on about 6 pm and saw pictures of deer romping around.  They have an Escape the Election and their regular programs are not on.  They are showing beautiful fall scenes while the local forecasts are shown at the bottom of the screen.  Every 10 minutes, when it is time for the complete forecasts, they show that and the commercials.  Then back to the pretty scenery..

Mary Ann

Beverly

Mary Ann - Erin is fine and, amazingly, so is my daughter, Donna. She is 58 now, healthy and happy. She's the one who recently cut nearly half her ring finger off with the power saw!  :o

We had a good time at the potluck. As usual, I came home stuffed. My pumpkin bundt cake  was a hit. I found the recipe on the internet. I will make it again. Chape is watching his Brooklyn Nets basketball game and I peek in at the election returns once in awhile in the living room.

I'll check the Weather Channel.

Hi everyone.  It is another overcast morning and now 55 degrees.  We should get to 73 in the middle of the afternoon.  The schedule is light today with only the Wednesday night dinner at the church and then getting to spend the rest of the evening with Scott.  After Pat's chiropractic appointment late yesterday afternoon we went on to Pizza Hut and had our evening meal.

It was a long night and I stayed with it until about 1:30 pm and then turned off the TV.  When Pat came to bed she told me that Trump had won and the Congress stayed in the hands of the Republicans.  I just hope and pray he will be a good President.

Mary Ann, we usually get out of the church service a little late on the Sunday's we have communion. Nice that Dot shared Norm's notebook with you.

Beverly, your pumpkin bundt cake sound very tasty.  IT sounds like it was a real hit.  Pat likes to find new recipes on the Internet and has found some good ones.

Patricia, I drove past two polling places at different times of the day and saw no long lines.  Of course we had early voting in South Carolina.

Marilyne, glad you didn't have to stand in a long line to vote.  It sure was an interesting evening watching the returns.

Mary Ann

I stayed up until about 11 pm to watch the returns last night.  I had no intention of staying up later.  I really didn't care who won and I wish we had had better candidates.  Reading some of the opinions of others, some people surprised me by being happy that Trump won and I know a couple here who will be very unhappy.

I've showered and washed my hair and I'm drying off (sitting here in my night clothes).  Tom, Terry and I will meet this noon at a Bob Evans near Terry's for lunch.  This is our weekly family lunch but Dot, Jan and Jan's parents can't make it.

I think we will have a nice, but cool, day today.  It is 44 degrees now and expected to go to 55 as a high.  With the sun shining, I can take that!

Mary Ann

So, it's Trump.  I fully expect the next weeks and months to be anything but boring.

Well now it is over. I was suprised in a way that he won. We saw the worst of him, now lets see  what he can do.  I think all people were not happy with the choice they had but just had to pick one.
He now has his chance to prove himself. Will he be all Talk or Action. Like Jeanne says. Should be a interesting 4 years ahead.

Hi everyone.  The sun is shining brightly with a clear sky this morning.  It is currently about 48 degrees here and will only get up to about 70 degrees this afternoon. I plan on going to coffee this morning and making a stop at the Credit Union either before or after.  Our minister couldn't be at the church this morning so will not be attending the Wisdom group as I normally do on Thursdays.  We had an enjoyable evening with Scott.  He came out an hour or so before we needed to go to dinner so had a little extra time with him.

I had too many little chores to do this morning so just going to check in for today and write no individual comments.  Hope it is a nice day for you all.

Good Morning Everyone
from the cool but very Bright and Sunny
rock coast of Maine.

I went out with Kelly yesterday and got
my flu and pneumonia  shots... Don't have
to go back again for six months.  I see
my primary care person twice a year unless
I have a problem....

So far,  so good!

Hi everyone.  It looks like we will be having a mixture of sun and clouds today with it getting up to about 73 degrees.  There is a wildfire advisory out due to the lack of rain during the last month and unusually low humidity of 15 to 25%.  I woke up at 5:30 this morning, laid there awhile and realized I wasn't going to fall back asleep so picked up my iPhone and started readings for today, including the discussion boards.

Pat has a Chiropractic appointment late this morning and I will go over to COSTCO to pick up my glasses and get a couple of things for lunch tomorrow, when we will have two friends visiting for the day and we decided to have lunch here rather than to go out.  I will get some of the delicious chicken salad and croissants and something for dessert.  Not sure what else Pat will want me to fix for the meal.  We may eat out at noon after Pat's appointment this morning.

We have been enjoying watching a new Netflix series called "The Crown" that is about the early years of Queen Elizabeth's life and assuming the throne.

Sandy, it is always good to hear the doctor say I'll see you in six months or better still a year.  However, I am not getting any of the year comments anymore so am just happy to hear 6 months.  I got my pneumonia shot several weeks ago when I was at the Walmart pharmacy and they asked me if I had had the shot.  They weren't busy so it was a good time to get it.

I hope everyone will have a good day and that a lot of folks will stop by and post.

Good morning from the dark and cold Interior! And Happy veteran's day to all of our soldiers and those of other countries that worked and bled to keep their countries free! We are having a cornbread and chili feed at noon today with the menu decided by the veterans among us in the building; it should be a good time for all. Then there is the large Thanksgiving meal here in a few days time. The company is providing several turkeys and hams, coffee and the cookers, utensils, paper goods, etc. and the residents will provide the rest. There is also a sign-up sheet for those seniors wishing for a food box of Thanksgiving day meal delivered so all should be represented.

Farrah has completely settled in. She has become both athletic and verbal.Yesterday she leapt four feet up to a counter and then looked at me like I was the one questioning her ability and she hadn't spent some minutes estimating and plotting her course. She also will come up and make questioning sounds to me, and I wish I knew what she was saying. I had three friends over for coffee one day, and she went over to one, sat at her feet and directed her questions to her. My friend looked over at me and asked what she wanted.I said I wished I knew! She is confounding because she doesn't like wet or canned food which is what the vet recommended and eats only about a three-fourths cup of dry daily. She seems interested in people food until it's offered and then she turns her nose up at it, including tuna!

I recently purchased a small indoor-outdoor vacuum as I can no longer deal with the belts in my old vacuum cleaner. I have the same issue with my printer, needing to take it down to the office to have them do any necessary printer maintenance. However, when does that become less of a favor and more of an imposition? I hate not being able to do so many seemingly simple things anymore!

I've thought about buying both a pressure cooker and a bread machine lately. Does anyone have any advice or comments about using a bread machine or if it's a worthy purchase?

Good morning Larry! I haven't gotten the flu or pneumonia shot since my first and only flu shot in 2005 gave me my only flu I have ever had or wanted. I actually had rolling chills!

I too have noticed the subtle dropping of posts here and in other parts of S&F and wish more would post. We deal with so many fires here and even some that burn under the leaf beds through the winters and I wouldn't wish that on anyone! We rarely have humidity here which gives us a lack of snow, plenty of static electricity and lots and lots of dry skin and air issues!

The only pet I have that I can talk about in here is my Furbee.  LOL  Other than he sleeps a lot and keeps telling me he is hungry, he doesn't say much anymore.  He is fun to listen to tho.

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone,
from the partially sunny,  and cool,
rocky coast of Maine.

I know that it seems like things are a bit slow in here...  But I blame it on us being
in between seasons...  and as the big
holidays come along,  people will begin
to be more communicative.

I am also spending time now playing
catch up on the videos on NetFlix,  CBSAllAccess, and Amazon...     There
are a mess of tv series that I will be
watching and paying attention to,  as I am still
trying desperately to wean my self off
from cable TV.

Trying to go from cable to just streaming shows is not an easy process for me.   For one
thing,  to do so successfully,  I  have to
pay strick attention to organizing my viewing time  with streaming sites that are available
to me.     The benefit will ultimately
be a much lower monthly cost,  while I
realize that I am making good use of the
streaming channels of my choice.

I kind of compare it to my choice not
to own any more animals  (ie cats)...
and for me it meant getting use to not having
cats in my presence...    I am doing ok
with that  so I will be working on simply
unplugging my cable  and making do with
what I else I have available.     If I can make it
through a couple of weeks WITH OUT,  then
I will consider pulling the plug permanently.

Ok.. so that is what I am up to now.

You all have a good day.
Sandy

No messages from Mary Ann, in the past couple of days?  I hope she is doing okay, and is just busy with family activities?

MarsGal

I sure hope the gradual drop in posts is not more than people being extra busy right now. Over on SeniorLearn, I noticed a drop in the regular discussion groups for quite a while. However, there is hope as some of the new Latin students have found their way over. And Robby is back; he has finally retired from his practice. Judy Laird is posting again, too, after a long absence. We have had our share of illnesses and deaths recently. The latest is Ella Gibbons, who passed away just a week or so ago. Ella was our long time Discussion Leader for Non-fiction. Some of you might remember Ella, Judy, and Robby from the old Senior Net.

Mary Ann

I'm here, Marilyne, but kind of busy.  You know the retiree saying - I'm so busy I don't know how I ever had time to work.  Our new washer and dryer were delivered yesterday.  A drain from a previous furnace and a/c installation was still screwed to the floor.  We got front loaders this time and their configuration is different than the top loaders and the washer was balanced on the pipe from the old a/c.  Neither Tom nor I are good at getting down to the floor so Annie came over this morning to unscrew the clamps on the pipe and all went well.  Tom has already washed a load of clothes.

We went out to Pizza Hut for lunch yesterday because the kitchen was still a mess after having to move things to let the deliverymen bring in the laundry equipment.  In fact, it still is a mess and I don't know who is going to help Tom move our heavy "pantry" (a cabinet).

When the laundry equipment was being brought in, Kendrick first went down the stairs and came back up when he discovered the work was going to be done there.  He ended up in my bedroom, under the bed, and I closed the door.  When all was done, I opened the door,  but couldn't see the cat.  I think it was about a half hour later than he showed up.

We are having a nice, sunny day and we'll be in the  mid 50s before the afternoon is over.

Mary Ann

Good afternoon, acting like a real Fall day, windy cool, but sunshine

Larry , I come in all the post and just read, I rally have nothing to say of interest. Also I like it when the doctor say's come back in 6 months. This week i went to the hematologist and he said come back in 1 week :( Wed. I went to breathing doctor, he said come back in 6 months :) Also my dentist yesterday said I will see you in 6 months, another smile.
Patricia for years I always used my presser cooker, but now it is most my small crock pot. Which i now have going right now with veal scallopini

MaryAnn nice you have someone like Annie to get down for you.  I know I am past the stage of getting down to do something on the floor. I would need help to get up.

Click for Riverhead, NY Forecast

Mary Ann

Gloria D, fortunately, it is not necessary for either Tom or me to get down on the floor often.  Annie doesn't live here so she had to stop on her way to work to help her dad.  She is a very willing person, but like a lot of young people, doesn't have a lot of spare time.  Tom has been using the washer since Annie got the pipe out from under it and when it goes into spin, it sounds like it is ready to take off.  My computer room is right over the washer and dryer.

We are having a lovely day with the temperature at 50 degrees and the sun is shining.  It is bright out, a typical fall day and many leaves are falling.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Good to see you're back, and that you were just busy with other things.  I'm interested in hearing how you like your new washer/dryer, because we'll be getting a new washer very soon.  My husband AJ, has been keeping our old one alive for a long time now, but I'm afraid there is not much more he can fix and replace.  We got it in the early 90's, so it's now about 25 years old. It's been a great machine, and I only wish I could get another just like it . . . a Whirlpool top loader, made in the USA.

Mary Ann

Marilyne, my old one was also Whirlpool, both appliances, washer top loader.  I can't say they got a lot of use but Tom lived here with me for three years before he was married and three years ago, he came back.  When I was working, I had more of a schedule but when I retired, I washed when I needed to.  Even so, both washer and dryer were 35 years old.  I had to replace the dryer heating element (electric) but this was the first trouble with the washer.  Tom has used both now and is happy with the results.  The washer is a front loader, but not one of the very expensive ones.

Mary Ann

Hi everyone on another beautiful morning.  We had some smoke yesterday from the wild fires in several surrounding States but it appears to have cleared away this morning.  Pat had good news from her Chiropractor yesterday.  He feels that progress has been made and it is now time to maintain it with just a once-a-month treatment and he will do the next three appointments without additional cost to us, which was really a surprise.  I think the conclusion is that she is just about as good as it is likely to be for her but we can always hope for further improvement.  She has exercises to do daily and to continue to use the ice as needed.

Today we are excited to have two dear friends visit us from where we moved from.  We are so looking forward to the visit.  We will just have a light lunch here with the chicken salad on croissants as the main item and then I got this huge pumpkin pie from COSTCO yesterday so will have that for dessert.  I will fix a vegetable plate to go with the sandwiches. I did talk with Scott yesterday and he was feeling back to normal.

Patricia, it sounds like Farrah is just keeping you off balance with her food issues.  Wouldn't we like to be able to know what they are thinking.  I can't give any advice on a bread machine other than we have/had one and the bread was delicious.  However, it became like a lot of other appliances something that soon feel into the category of seldom or never used anymore.

Joan, I haven't thought of a Furbee for many years.  They were quite popular at the time they came on the market.

Sandy, good luck on your giving up the cable.  Have you tried watching videos or Netflix on your smart phone.  I use my smart phone often for that and the pictures are great.  I blue tooth the sound to my earphones and it is great.  I seldom use the TV we have in our bedroom but will either use my iPad or the iPhone to watch a Netflix after I retire for the night or to watch sports on the ESPN or CBS apps.  There is certainly more available than we have time to view.

MarsGal, I do remember Ella and recall Judy and Robbie being very active in the books discussions on SeniorNet.  Did you used to post under a different name?

Mary Ann, I hope you and Tom like the new washer/dryer.  Our relatively new washer spins out so much of the water than the clothes dry very quickly.  It does sound like a space ship starting up and makes a series of beeping sounds when it is finished.  You were disturbing Kendrick's world when the new appliances were brought into his space.

deAngel, I disagree that you seldom have anything to say as I always find your postings interesting.  In my opinion it is not the content but the sharing with each other, whether a long or short sharing, that makes this place special.  Glad you have a couple of appointment now on the 6 month cycle.

Marilyne, we have an LG large capacity washer that we are very pleased with.  It weighs the load to know how much water to use and as I said above it really spins the clothes to remove most of the moisture.  It is a top loading washer.

MarsGal

Larry, I used to go by the moniker of Frybabe, which I still retain over on SeniorLearn. When the massive redo happened here, I took the opportunity to change it. Until this year, I never posted on this particular board. Frybabe was a nickname given to me by a client when I worked at Fry Communications. I changed to MarsGal (and an interest in Space science and a love for Science Fiction)  to reflect a forward looking attitude rather than a past association.

I have to go feed George's cats. I may check back in later.
