Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

Mary Ann - Like you, I don't post pictures that are unflattering of anyone. I wouldn't want them to do that to me!

Very warm out today and as usual is supposed to rain later today. Lots of sunshine since this morning, though.

Still hobbling around with my back/hip. Hope this changes soon.  Our youngest daughter is flying down late Sunday night to spend a couple of days with us. I am really looking forward to it. Seldom have a chance for one-on-one time with her.

Larry - Thanks. I've had small problems from time to time but never anything like this!

larryhanna

Hi everyone. Our cooler days seem to be over as we are headed to 94 degrees this afternoon and no rain possibility at least until this evening.

Yesterday was a very full day but I did get my desktop computer back in good shape.  There are just a few more things I need to do like set up a new checkbook program.  I don't need anything elaborate as use it only to reconcile the bank statement and keep track of a running uncommitted funds totals in the bank.

I rested about 90 minutes yesterday but no nap so was very tired last night and got a good 9 hours of sleep.  However, I am feeling the effects of such a busy day and I won't push it today and will try to get more rest.  I got up and got ready for the day about 7:30 this morning and then decided I could lay back down for an hour or so and read my email, my morning readings and then read through all of the postings here in the discussions before finally getting up.

I plan to stay in all day today.  I do need to make Pat some more sausage muffins and grate a couple of pounds of cheese.  I also told her I would fix some coleslaw to go with our fish or dinner this evening.

I see I was tired when I last posted and said it ws Friday evening when in reality it was late Wednesday evening.  Another of those pesky senior moments.

Mary Ann, hope you just had rain and not a storm. Hope your dentist appointment goes well today.  It sounds like you have been keeping the restaurants and other eating places in business this week.

Marilyne, I don't know how you could stand to be outside in such hot weather.

Joan, it is nice that Minnie Pearl can do your vacuuming for you.  I got up early yesterday morning as woke up around 3:30 and couldn't go back to sleep.
I'm up today but not sure how much "at em" I have for today.  I guess time will tell but don't plan to push too hard.

Beverly, sorry that the back/hip are bothering you still.  that is going to put a crimp into your golfing or is that about over until cooler weather down your way.  Nice that your daughter is coming to visit and I bet she will lend a helping hand while she is there.

wjoan

No news here.  Gonna be 93 they say today.

Good morning, a friend just called and said she wants to take me out to lunch. I am going to go, but hope I can make it.  This is the first time I have been out in the last two weeks. Between the upper respiratory infection, and now my legs are so swollen, I am not sure. Larry, I join you in feeling so tired.

It is another warm cloudy day.

I need to go grocery shopping also.

MaryAnn, I enjoy eating out once in awhile. We are going to Friendly's. My bed in not completely made, as Taffy will not move. :)

Larry - During most of my lifetime, AC was unheard of in homes and apartments, here in California.  Restaurants and work places started getting it first - around the 1960's and 70's.  We've lived in this house since 1971, but didn't get our AC unit until the mid 1990's.  When you don't know any better, you get along fine, but once you get AC, you don't know how you lived without it.  I remember trying to convince my dad to at least get a window unit for his house in Southern California.  He scoffed at the idea, and lived comfortably there without AC, until he died at age 83.

I guess it's tolerable because there is no humidity to speak of, and it always cools down at night. However, this heat wave that we just endured, was the worst one that I can remember.  It was as high as 106 here, and up to 110 - 120, in the Central Valley and the desert areas.  I'm afraid that Global Warming is happening!

Mary Ann

It isn't as warm here as I expected and that's fine.  I think it is about 75 degrees but the thermometer I can see is between the garage and house and I think is in an area where it is a bit warmer than in an open area.  Larry, we had a little rain, but not much.  No storm - yet!

I had the first step in getting a crown this morning and it was almost painless.  I said in another folder that while I don't like getting crowns, I prefer them to gaps when the teeth are removed.  At my age I'm not interested in getting a partial.

Gloria, I'm glad to hear that Taffy helps you make your bed too.  I did get the blanket pulled up before Kendrick came in to help and I haven't been in the bedroom since to pull up the quilt.  I may just leave it that way since I'm the only one who uses the bedroom - except Kendrick, of course.

Marilyne, I remember those hot summer days before air conditioners and I certainly remember those hot days at work before a/c.  My office was on the fourth floor on the west side.  I did have a blind for the window and used it, but when there was no breeze, it was awful.  Later, when I had a cottage, I did not have air there but there usually was a breeze.  However, my house was closed up all weekend when I was at the cottage and it was closed up all day when I was at work and the house never cooled down.  That was one main selling point when I did sell it.  Then I could open all of the windows and doors and it was nice.  I did not have an a/c until I moved to this condo.

Gloria, I really don't like to eat out as often as I have this week, but it just worked out that way.  I don't eat out alone because I want to eat out with somone.

I'm watching golf right now.

Joan, have you seen the This Old House program where Roger Cook showed a lawn mower like your Minnie Pearl?  Roger gave a lot of reasons why it mower was cost effective, but it cost about $5,000.

Mary Ann

wjoan

Mary Ann, have not watched TV in almost 18 years.  However have a friend who made one for his lawn and it works well.

Marilyne

I just sent an hour in a local shoe store, trying to find a pair of comfortable shoes to wear to wear tomorrow . . . funeral and luncheon, and then the graduation party for the two grandkids.  Buying shoes is a major production for me, because it's becoming impossible to find anything that fits these boney old feet.  I finally settled on a pair, because I was desperate, but I'm not really happy.  The only good thing, is that they were having a sale . . . everything in the store was ten dollars off.

joan - I'm going to look and see if I can find your Facebook profile, so I can see the pictures you posted of Dan. If I find it, I'll send you a friend request! :)   I know you have a lot of serious problems with your eyes, so I was just wondering if that's why you don't have a TV?

wjoan

Marilyne, you got it.  No sense watching something I cannot see.  My last name is barada so account on FB is under Joan Barada.

Lindancer

Marilyne, We lived here two years in this Mobile.  When we bought 35 years ago they did not come with dish washer or AC.  Now it is taken for granted they will have both. The house we lived in, in Southampton was 40 years old on three areas, but we found it had seaweed for insulation. The cellar was still dirt floor. It did stay cool.

MaryAnn, I went out to lunch and did my grocery shopping, I think I feel better this afternoon. My legs were weak from not walking any distance, but feel better now. I guess I needed to exercise them. by the way Taffy is still in bed.  She will roam to night.

Gloria, Kendrick finally did get off the bed, but I didn't pull up the quilt.  The blanket is up so the bed looks made.  It won't be long before I get into it anyway, and I don't use the quilt.

Kendrick is on the deck right now.  I set a timer for 10 minutes and it hasn't gone off yet, but will in a couple of minutes.  He'll be ready to come in.

People are swimming in Lake Michigan and the water temperature is 71 degrees.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Gloria de and Mary Ann - I guess I was taking it for granted that everyone in other parts of the country had air conditioning long before we started getting it out here on the coast. It looks like all of us in this discussion, got ac around the same time.  I know that there are houses here on my street, that still don't have it. One is the house right behind me, and the other is right next door.  Both families emigrated here from other countries, so maybe they consider ac to be unnecessary?   There are fifteen houses on this cul-de-sac, and I don't know how many others have it or not?  I don't know my neighbors, as I did long ago, when we first moved here. Everyone keeps to themselves now.

wjoan - Hello Facebook friend! :)  I have to tell you right away, that my profile picture, was taken 25 years ago, at the wedding of our son and dil.  As you can well imagine, my husband and I no longer look like that! LOL!

wjoan

Marilyne, my pic is the same one as on here.  Candy took it for me before she left for CA.   Not as old as yours is.  LOL  Been trying to get a new one but Dan's cell takes lousy pics.

larryhanna

Hi everyone. Hi everyone.  The day is starting out sunny and we have a good chance of some rain this afternoon and evening. It looks like we will get to the low 90s for awhile this afternoon.  I had another good nights sleep of about nine hours and feel good this morning.  Yesterday morning I managed to wear myself down to a nub.  I have a quieter day planned today.  I will attend my 10:30 am meeting and this afternoon tune in to the PGA Golf match.  I did watch quite a bit of it yesterday afternoon.

deAngel, I hope you enjoyed your luncheon with your friend and hope it didn't give you any problems. I see you enjoyed it and it probably lifted your spirits to get out and with a friend. I have never heard of seaweed being used for insulation.

Marilyne, we didn't have A/C until around 1970 when we moved into a new mobile home in Springfield, Illinois.  I still remember those hot summer on the farm and then when Pat and I were having our family in Oklahoma and how hot the summers were there. My wife has a terrible time finding comfortable shoes as her feet are not in good condition.  I am fortunate and have no trouble being fitted.  It is when I get to the cash register that it becomes an unpleasant experience.  :)

Mary Ann, glad your dental experience was almost painless.  They sure have improved dentistry in that regard.

Joan, your friend must be very talented to make a self-mowing mower.

wjoan

Larry, actually it is the Farmer.  Just didn't want to say that.  He fiddles around with stuff.

Carol

Nice to read all your notes.  I have had a couple of health issues and also we just got back from Grand Lake (one son's cabin) at 8,500 ft. altitude.  Here at home, I think we are about 6,500 so when we travel we have to get used to it all over again.

Lost a crown that was just put in last week and now I will have to wait until Monday.

Angel:  On population growth - we are under siege here with about 1,000 people moving in every week.  A lot more homeless (they like the open pot atmosphere) and we are being fed news that there are a lot of jobs.  Construction is booming.  This is a boom and bust state from its history.
Also, I wanted to comment on moose - the moose look so different in Sweden.  They look like the backs sling low compared to our moose.  I don't know if Alaska moose are larger than the ones here.  Interesting on the native nation not having highways, cannot blame them.  Do they not pay any gas tax for the highways?

Sandy:  you are fortunate to get that cast off before warmer weather.

wjoan:  Congrats to your son's graduation.  So much more meaningful with the struggle.

Marilyne - Seattle became noticed in the 60's for heavy drug use - the son of a famous t.v. star had a huge following near the high school where I went - a lot of other Californians moved into that area too.  I wanted to move back home with our family but it was a good thing we were able to raise our children away from those temptations.  My folks were robbed 19 times, for instance.

I forgot to mention that yesterday morning, at high altitude, our car had ice on it.  We drove down the hill in fog and it is normal here.

Carol, yes it is.  Thanks.

95 today and tomorrow expected is 103

Mary Ann

Oh, what I did to my kitty.  You would have laughed.  Kendrick was out on the deck so I thought before I let him in, I'd sprinkle some catnip.  I saw a fabric ball of his, about 2" in diameter, and sprinkled the catnip, then put the ball in a metal thing where I have some of his toys (that he doesn't play with).  I let him in and he immediately smelled the catnip.  He went toward the area and sniffed all over the place but couldn't quite find it.  Eventually he did and the container is deep but he put his front legs in it and finally brought up the ball.  He was funny.

Now it is about time to go to bed.

Mary Ann

Beverly

My thermometer said it was 105 this afternoon. I think it exaggerates sometimes.  :)  I want to get another one that also shows humidity.

My daughter called today to say they are home from their trip. One they will always remember, I'm sure! They were also able to have a short visit with my niece in Frisco, CO and SIL's niece in the same area.

Carol -  They traveled to some point that was nearly 12,000 ft. elevation, according to the sign, and also through some passes that would make me nervous.  I've never been to that part of the country but I can visit it through their pictures! (Sorry about that crown!)

Marilyne - I've read that people in other countries don't understand our need for A/C. I wouldn't want to live here in Florida without it!

Mary Ann - You made Kendrick's day!  ;)

larryhanna

This Sunday morning starts out sunny and pleasant.  We are to get only into the high 80's this afternoon.  We had a couple of fairly brief but good rain showers yesterday afternoon so won't need to use the sprinklers tomorrow.

I anticipate a very pleasant day as we will go to Sunday School and Church and then out to eat somewhere.  I will rest, listen to Don's classical music program for a couple of hours and watch golf this afternoon. Then we will have a quiet evening.

I don't have a lot of time to spend on the discussions this morning although have read each postings since yesterday.

Joan, I thought it was probably the Farmer to whom you referred.  He sounds like my dad, who could make about anything he set his mind to.

Carol, hope you have the crown so it can be re-glued in place.  I have had a lot of crowns but never had one pop off.

Mary Ann, now aren't you ashamed of making Kenrick work so hard.  :)  He wasn't going to give up until he got what he was smelling and looking for.

Beverly, the weather apps I have on my iPhone show the humidity.  You are certainly having hot weather down there.  When we were last in Colorado we drove up to the 12,000 foot summit and it was very hard to breathe and I immediately had angina and we had to leave and get down to a lower elevation quickly.

Mary Ann

Larry, it was fun and funny to watch Kendrick sniffing around to find the catnip.  I have not been able to smell the catnip.  I remember Norm and his first wife had a house where some catnip grew behind the house and their cats would enjoy the catnip.  I guess the nose knows.

Dot and I have been to church.  Originally she expected her granddaughter from Texas would be here with her twin boys but they had a delay in Illinois.  Fortunately it was at Dot's son's; I think they had a flat tire.  As a result of the granddaughter coming, Dot and I are not going to go OTB but with the delay she could have.  In the meantime, I made arrangements to go to breakfast with Tom and I think Dot's family will be here by that time.

Our minister likes the old hymns and today we sang "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms"; last week we sang "Blessed Assurance".  I find that during the week I sing those hymns to myself.

It sounds as if Tom is home and did not go to church; if not, the cat is making some unexplained noises!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Busy day for us yesterday.  The graveside funeral service for AJ's cousin was at 11:00, followed by a nice luncheon.  Then we hurried back home and changed clothes, gathered the presents, and headed for our son's house for the graduation party for the two youngest grandchildren.  It was held in their lovely backyard, patio, and was absolutely packed with people - young and old.

The extreme heat wave had finally broken, so the weather was Cool and comfortable at both events.  Because of my vocal cord problem, I thought I would be "speechless" by the end of the day, but my voice held up really well.  I'm hoping that that's a good sign, and maybe things will be returning to normal?

Beverly - You surpassed our high temperature last week, with your 105 degrees!   We only hit 103 here in San Jose area.  Once the thermometer hits 100, it's all the same to me!  Fortunately, we don't have the humidity.

Larry - I wish we would get a few of your rain showers.  We won't be seeing rain here, until November, at the earliest.  I guess that's why we don't have humidity, so I shouldn't complain.

Mary Ann - I'm going down to Petco today, to stock up on Winnie's canned food.  While there, I'm going to take a look at the catnip and see if I can find a catnip toy for him.  At his age, he may no longer be interested.

Patricia - We haven't seen any messages from you in a number of days?  You're probably out and about, enjoying those nice long days that you're having now?

Mary Ann

#5452
Marilyn, I am surprised it gets so hot in your area.  I knew in southern CA it got warm, but I thought northern CA, Oregon and Washington had more moderate temps.  We've been known to get quite warm, but as a rule, our temps do not get too high.  Lake Michigan helps.

I teased Kendrick again today and it is fun to watch him.  He has a turntable toy where the top comes off, but there are openings in the top for him to smell through or to get food - if I put some in there.  I put a very little bit of catnip in the open compartment, but put a screened part over it.  I moistened the ball a bit, and put some catnip on the moistened area, then put the ball in the groove and put the top on the turntable.  He smelled the catnip immediately and worked quite a while before he got the top off the turntable so he could eat the catnip.  When he finished, he batted the ball around for several minutes until he lost it.  And I cannot find it!

Mary Ann - California has perfect weather, in the cities along or near the coast, in the Southern and Central parts of the state. Not too hot and not too cold, with bright sun and beautiful beaches. They refer to it as a Mediterranean climate. By the time you get to San Francisco, however, it's cool year round, with lots of fog and wind. This "sweater weather" continues along the entire coast through Oregon and Washington.

The high temperatures throughout the state, start about 10 to 20 miles inland, because those areas are either deserts or valleys or basins.  So the heat gets trapped in those places.  The worst heat in CA, is in the Central or San Joaquin Valley (Fresno, Sacramento, Bakersfield), where it is in the 90's and 100's all summer long.

I live in the Santa Clara Valley - now called Silicon Valley, because of the tech industry. We are surrounded by mountains on three sides, with the San Francisco Bay to our North, so we don't get as hot as the Central Valley.  We do get two or three heat waves over the summer, where the temps hit 100 or more.

Now, aren't you sorry you asked? ha ha! Sometimes I get started and can't stop! ::)

larryhanna

Hi everyone. We have a nice clear morning with little chance of rain today but getting into the high 80's.  Other than a quick trip to Aldi's to pick up a few groceries and produce my day is clear.  I am glad of that as even after a good nights sleep I woke up tired this morning so will plan to have a quiet and restful day.  We did make it to Sunday School and Church yesterday and then ate lunch at Ruby Tuesdays.

About 3:30 yesterday I tuned in to the PGA Men's golf tournament and it ended up being an exciting one with a playoff required.  Jordan Spieth, who had led throughout the tournament made a spectacular shot from the sand bunker right into the hole to come out the winner.  This was his 10th win on the PGA and he is only 24 years old.  It looks like he is headed to a great career.

Mary Ann, it has not been long since we also sang those hymns in Church.  Those are songs I remember from my growing up years.

Marilyne, it sounds like you had a pretty busy day yesterday with the funeral and then the party.  Glad your weather was such that it was comfortable for you all to be outside for the party.  We usually get rain throughout the summer although many areas in the SE are trying to recover from drought conditions over the past few years.  I also hope Patricia is OK as do miss her interesting postings.  It sounds like you live in a beautiful area of California but probably a pretty busy one now that it has become Silicon Valley.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, if, as you say, California has perfect weather, that may be the reason so many people move, or want to move, there.  I think Larry's area, or both Carolinas are said to have pleasant weather and I understand many people go to either state to retire.  I do think I'll stay in Michigan where we have water!

Tom fixed scrambled eggs for breakfast this morning.  He does an excellent job on scrambled eggs, putting in several vegetables which are both colorful and tasty.

It's hard to believe that we are near the end of June, making the year half over.  I know the older we get the faster the time goes.

I'll be back later after I really wake up!

Mary Ann

wjoan

Another 100 or plus today.   Off to the shower.  Have a great day all. Hugs all around.

Mary Ann

Joan, you might like our weather more - sun shining and our temperature is 66 degrees at 11 am and I think it won't go much higher, maybe into the low 70s.

Mary Ann
