Jeanne Lee, many thanks for posting the pictures and you did get the names right.  I think they go by nicknames already - Ellie and Jo.  It is interesting to see how they have developed in their five months.  They were almost two months early because of problems Alicia had.  I don't see them enough to catch their personalities, but I can see those smiles which they didn't have a month ago.  I will see them in another week and a half on Tom's birthday which we will celebrate in Holland.

Hope you all had a good day! We went to a 4th of July party at a friend's........Several of us went for a dip in their pool. The water was nice, just the way I like it! Lots of good food with pulled pork with all the fixings and fun conversations. Tonight I can hear non-stop fireworks. Makes me glad I don't have a dog. The noise can be so hard on them!

My friend, Dee, lost one of her cats today from congestive heart failure (and he's not an old cat) Sad, as she adopted the brothers together and the other one is already missing him.

Now to go look at Mary Ann's babies!

Long story short; Tripple A got and paid for a room for Candy last night.  Seems some jerk at AAA told the tow truck guy that she was fine and ok and did not need  their help.   Am sure some one caught hell for that.  More news when I hear.

Supposed to be 103 today and unfortunately I do have to go out in this heat.

Hi everyone. We are going to have a scorcher of a day getting up to 97 or so with no rain expected.  We have planned to go to the Chop House to celebrate Pat's Birthday and our wedding anniversary when occurs on Friday and Sunday.  However, Scott called last evening saying we may need to postpone it until Saturday as he has the installer for Direct TV coming between noon and four.  If the installer gets there and gone so we can get to the restaurant before 4 pm we will go ahead with our plans for today and if not it will be Saturday in the early afternoon as he has to be at work at 5 pm.  We have nothing else on our schedule for today.

Last evening I watched two 4th of July programs.  They were both on Public TV so no commercials.  The first was presented by the First Baptist Church of Columbia, South Carolina and it was a wonderfully patriotic program featuring a lot of the military past and present honoring them and our country in song and words.  It was so touching in a couple of places I found myself shedding tears.  They had done a similar program last year that I had seen so suspect it is an annual event.  I then watched the Capitol Fourth Celebration from the grounds of the Capitol and it was also excellent and the fireworks were enjoyable as the orchestra played the 1812 Overture.     

Mary Ann, when I was growing up we had both a Safeway and an A&P store in the college town about 6 miles from us.  I loved to go to the A&P where my grandmother shopped as it had that freshly ground coffee smell.  There are no A&P stores.  I just searched and found that A&P ceased supermarket operations in November 2015 after 156 years in business.  It sounds like your funding Tom's party and his sons doing the work is a good compromise. 

Marilyne, I could hear the noise of fireworks probably in the street back of us but they were not annoying.  I don't think we ever have humidity of 20%. Sure hope your area had no fires last evening.  I hope your family members have a great time in Europe.  The terror attacks are scary things but they happen in a very limited area and we can't live our lives in fear of the unknown or the enemy wins, which is what I think they are trying to do. 

Joan, I expect you gave a sigh of relief when you knew Candy was at her destination safely.

Patricia, if it was very hot it sounds like your decision to pass up the holiday cookout was a wise one.  I see you continue to spoil Farrah and that she enjoys every minute of it. Glad you enjoy the classes you take.  You obviously have a very inquisitive mind.

Sandy, we have attended fireworks displays involving a lot of people.  The worst was at Wolf Trap Farm in Virginia, which is like a park that has an amphitheater and has many different type shows during the summer.  We sat on the ground on a blanket and watched a nice 4th of July show and the fireworks but then got caught in a terrible traffic jam.  When we lived in Maryland we did attend a celebration in Rockville that was put on by one of the military bands followed by fireworks and the traffic was bad but not as bad as at Wolf Trap.  I wouldn't even consider attending any of these events now. 

Sue, these little ones seem to grow so quickly.  Fe is a beautiful baby and Sandy has a right to be a proud grandmother. 

deAngel, our refrigerator won't accommodate a whole watermelon so we have to cut off the rind and cut into small pieces and put in a big storage container.  Did you ever have a black diamond watermelon?  That has always been my favorite as I grew up and it was so sweet and flavorful and a dark red inside.     

Jeanne, thanks for posting the pictures of the Tock twins.  They sure are cute in their 4th of July garments. 

Beverly, it sounds like a nice party you enjoyed yesterday. 

Joan, glad that Candy was found and put up in a hotel.  One doesn't expect that experience with AAA or other roadside services. 

Candy just called.  Seems that the person who told the tow truck driver that she was ok  ended up getting fired and two supervisors  were in constant touch with Candy til she got to the Hotel.  She is now waiting for the mechanics to all come in so they can check out her car.  I am off to the hair salon, will be in touch later.

Good morning from a cool, but bright and beautiful Interior! Quite a change from yesterday morning's fog and rain! We have plus 56 at 7 Am and moving to a high of 86.  Yesterday had a hot, dry middle bracketed by morning rain and fog and evening thundershowers and a lot of rain. So for the first time in a very, long time, there were no firecrackers or loud noises from street parties.

Farrah doesn't seem to be bothered by loud noises unless they are moving and moving closer to her. It is the same with the vacuum. I know she has an acute hearing as she reacts to people in the hallway or at the door before I'm even aware of them. She hears birds outside and sounds above and below us as well before I do. I recently purchased a small white mouse that has a long elastic that hangs on a door frame. I have it on the balcony door and she loves pouncing up at it as she goes by. Larry, she deserves to be spoiled and it is helping her to relax and each day I see something new from her even fourteen months since she came here.

I ended up going to the cookout after all as some folks showed up at my door and insisted I go.  We had all the old standbys, but someone brought meaty ribs that didn't have a barbecue or tomato sauce but were well seasoned like steaks. Between the meat and the salads along with some cinnamon apple cake, I was well fed and participated in some good gossip and teasing conversation. Then I came home and finish my book, "I can't make this up," a book by Kevin Hart. I have an Amazon delivery sometime today with my Black and Decker toaster oven and I have one last item due as well so I should be set for the week.

Joan, I'm glad Candy was helped and hope she gets a discount or reimbursement for that error!

I'm glad everyone had a nice holiday and that pool sounds nice, Bev! I always hate to hear about animals suffering due to humans and their fascination with loud noises and things that go boom. It is said that more cats and dogs disappear on the fourth than at any other time of the year.

Larry, enjoy your wedding anniversary and Pat's birthday when you are able to celebrate. I hope both Scot and Jennifer are feeling better.

Mary Ann, what precious little girls.  Joanna has such a cute mischievous look and Eleanor looks like she is ready to be picked up for a rocking chair time.  Thanks to Jeanne Lee for her usual thoughtful help in the posting.

Joan, I know you are much relieved that everything is OK with your daughter.  I don't think we ever stop worrying no matter how old our kids are.

Jean, thank you for your note about the girls.  I think they are now showing some personality.  I also think they look almost alike as if they'd be identical twins, but I know they are not.  I think it will be soon that they will show some resemblance to their parents.  They already have the red hair that both parents have.  James' hair is more auburn, but Alicia's is carrot color.

I have a funny cat!  This morning when I tried to make the bed, he got in the way and I put the blanket over him.  He stayed there while I did other things and I left the room.  Eventually he got off the bed.  And I never got to finish making it.  Just now I went into the bedroom and there was a lump under the quilt and, sure enough, there was a cat under the quilt.  As far as I know, he is still there.

I think we're in for a rather warm day, into the 80s at least.  I have the air set at 78 degrees and when my inside thermometer shows that temperature, I'll turn on the air.  I just hate to close the doors because there usually is a slight breeze.

Larry, when I was very young, my folks shopped at a neighborhood grocery store.  The A&P came later, but in the same block.  I think the Kroger store went in where the A&P was and A&P moved about a mile away.  I remember doing my shopping there for a while, but Meijer opened a store further down the road and I began shopping there.  Meijer now has developed into a supermarket chain in several states and their headquarters are in Walker, a Grand Rapids suburb.  But I don't do my grocery shopping at Meijer now, in fact, Tom does my shopping, but because I prefer Family Fare, a SpartanNash chain, he shops there for me.  They also are locally based.  Kroger is no longer in our area, but is prominent in the Detroit area.

Mary Ann - When Winnie was younger, he used to like to burrow his way under the covers or the top comforter - AFTER the bed was made!  There were times when I almost sat on him, because I didn't see that lump!  Now I think it's too difficult for him to expend the energy it takes to work his way under.  For the past few years, he's content to stay on top.  The new mattress is one of those really thick ones, so that, on top of the box spring, makes the bed unusually high.  It's hard for him to jump that high, but he still manages to do it. 

Gloria de - Did you watch the Capital Fourth, last night?  It was okay I thought - interesting to see some of the Senators in the audience.  We liked the Beach Boys, even though there was only one of the original four on stage.  I had never heard of any of the other singers who were featured, but they did a good job with the patriotic songs.  The 1812 Overture was good at the end.

Patricia - I agree, that fireworks are extremely hard on most pets.  Lots of complaints online and on Facebook this year!  Fortunately, it was quiet here, so Winnie did not go into panic mode, as he has done so many times in years past.

Oh,I am not too funny today.  Just so tired from the dunces across the ravine who used fireworks (ILLEGAL) way into the night.  The internet was down so I couldn't remember the name of the street and call it in. 

I drove a friend with me as we both needed to update driver's licenses - she had little use of her injured right hand after falling on ice 5 months ago so we all take turns driving her - and she is caregiver to her husband.  Anyway, after leaving the DMV, she accidentally shut her good thumb (other hand) in my car door.  Bleeding profusely because of blood thinner, we did get that stopped and I just took her home instead of having a cup of tea.  She is a gal of true grit! 

My other project for this day was to chat with Verizon - it went better than expected but we still will pay for something we did not sign on for in the beginning.  Another live and learn lesson. 

Mary-TX:  You asked me where I was raised and it was all over for many years.  Raised in Wisconsin (father in school), Florida, Quincy, Mass, a little town in Minnesota for two school years then out to Seattle.  I had one crazy accent so bad no one understood me and the teacher called my mother to complain that I wouldn't answer when called.  - but the answer is:  mostly raised on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle before the city became interesting to Californians and many from Hong Kong. I went to QA and the U.  Grad of UTD (Dallas).  It is so nice to be settled now.  How about you?  Do you remember Dick's Drive-In?

Carol, I remember Dick's Drive-in and their 15 cent hamburgers well .  Thirty cents got you a burger, fries and a coke!!!  The original Dick's opened in 1954 on NE 45th.  Roosevelt High was on NE 66th so even tho we were supposed to have a closed campus at lunch, it became the lunch hangout .  Unfortunately, we had to share it with Lincoln High which was in Wallingford.  As both schools were somewhat rivals, it was interesting at times!

I have never been to the one on Queen Anne.  My nephew and family lived in Tukwila.  My grandniece was always bugging her Dad to take her to the one on Queen Anne.

Hi everyone. It is already 80 degrees this morning and headed up to 94 with sun or mostly sunny all day.  We didn't get to the Chop House yesterday as the man installing Scott's Direct TV didn't finish until about 4pm.  So Scott and Jennifer went to the Wifesavers and got us all chicken dinners with sides for our evening meal.  We now plan on going to the Chop House on Saturday afternoon around 2 pm.  The only thing I have planned for today is to go to coffee.  I probably won't go to the Wisdom group today as I got up feeling weary and this heat really is a bit hard on me.  I may watch some of the golf later this afternoon.

I know it is hard to believe but I am going to be very brief this morning as I have to leave before long.  I read all of the postings before I got up this morning and appreciate each and every one of them.

We just hit 104.  Looks like we will be in this heat for next few day and then some.

Joan, at 10:10 pm here, the temperature is 81 degrees.  I noticed we have a hazy full moon tonight and I think we're supposed to have rain.  Friday is supposed to be in the 80s, Saturday high 70s, then back to the 80s for the week.  Of course, it is July and we should expect 80 degrees, maybe 90, in July and August.  I'm so thankful for my air conditioning.  It probably is hot all over.

I just looked at the radar and storms are quite far north of us and also across Lake Michigan.  I guess we won't get any rain tonight.  My poor plants.

MaryAnn, here at 8:52, we have 84 degrees and I have been running around in that since 2 PM. I just got home and had some pork and scrambled eggs. The toaster oven slash convection oven I ordered works wonders and I misspoke earlier. It isn't a Black & Decker but an Oster. It is also quite a bit larger than I thought. I expected it to be the regular size of a toaster oven.

I think I mentioned earlier that my oven doesn't work and management keeps saying if it reaches the expected temperatures and holds it for five minutes, it's working. I say that when a self-cleaning oven doesn't heat up or clean, and that a thawed chicken cooked at 450 degrees for an hour comes out at room temperatures, that means it's not working! So this toaster slash convection oven and the microwave due the first part of August addresses that. At this point, there is nothing more to be said and no I cannot afford to move or to rock the boat and have to move.

Angel, After I moved into this house, George bought me a new oven for my birthday. All I really wanted was a range top. I may have used the oven three times since I've had it. I used my microwave for just about everything. All else is either stovetop or slow cooker. The Microwas is a Panasonic Inverter which works a little different than a regular microwave so I have to be careful to reduce the number selected and/or the length of time I cook stuff. I bought a new, larger (didn't realize it would be that large) slow cooker a few months ago. The first meal I made with it a whole pork loin from which I made ramen noodle, pork and mushroom soup, several days of sliced pork for meals and sandwiches, and the rest I shredded and froze to make pork barbecue.

I've watched the bear cam on YouTube several times on my SmartTV. In fact, I spend much more time watching things on YouTube than I do the regular cable TV channels. Best of all, it is free. I see YouTube is getting into the act with original web series shows on their paid YouTube Red. I think Amazon Prime has added some of the web only sites now too, but I haven't looked into them yet.

It is 6:11am here and 69 right now. That is a lower morning temp than it has been lately. Still, it is to get up to 87 this afternoon. It is raining pretty heavily and steady right now.

Hi everyone. It is going to be another hot day here in South Carolina getting into the mid-90's. I have no plans for today and am thankful as got up feeling very weary.  I did get the dishwasher unloaded and things out for Pat's breakfast and for my own.  I have a few things to take care of here in my office and that will likely be it for today. 

Joan, you are a lot hotter out your way than we are having.  We haven't hit any day with 100 degrees yet although will stay in the 90's which is normal for this time of year.

Mary Ann, our plants dry out quickly this time of the year. 

Patricia, that sounds like a great toaster/convection oven.  I wonder how created the 5 minute rule on ovens?  You know whether your oven works or not. 

MarsGal, a few months before we decided to move we bought a new stand alone stove that Pat really liked.  Then we moved and had to leave the new range in the house.  We have a new range in this house, which Pat has never really liked but we can't justify replacing it.  We also use the microwave for a lot of things on a daily basis. 

Shirley, thanks for the Anniversary  good wishes.  This was number 55.   

Larry, I'm sorry I missed sending you and Pat anniversary greetings.  55 years is a good long time, but I have read about a couple of 80-year anniversaries on the computer recently.  One of them was in Grand Rapids.  I don't think any of my family or friends got anywhere near those numbers, but I did have some friends who had 50-year anniversaries. 

Annie was just here to take care of the cat litter.  She is kind of in charge of Tom's birthday party and things are going along well.  It is going to be at the house of a friend of Tom's instead of in Holland. 

We had about 1 1/2 inches of rain overnight with thunder and lightning.  I don't have to water my outside plants today.  Annie said it kept her awake, but I slept through a lot of it.  Tom sleeps with a CPAC and hears very little outside noise.  It will be a muggy day today.

We will be leaving for my dental appointment in a few minutes.

Good morning all:  We had a nice Bon Voyage gathering here yesterday for son and family - all traveling to Europe.  Son and dil will be gone for two weeks, but the two grandkids and friends, will travel for six weeks.  They won't be back until the end of August.

I don't have a smart phone, so we've been unable to text, but gr-daughter Jessica, showed me how to send and receive a text on my computer!  I'm really pleased with that feature, and didn't even know I had the ability to do it.  So now, it will be a little easier to keep up with where they are, and also to receive photos.  They post on Facebook, but hearing from them on my computer is more personal.

So, Cocoa is here for two weeks, and poor old Winnie is in the basement.   I may try to reintroduce them in a few days, and see if they can tolerate each other?  They are both old now, so may be more accepting of each other. 

shirleyn - Glad you're looking in every day. Even if you don't post a message, we know you're out there, and reading what we have to say every day! I hope that things are a little better for you now? 

wjoan - So looks like you're enjoying a typical Tri-Cities Summer . . . temperatures in the 90's and 100's every day. I remember what it was like, although it's been 59 years ago!

Larry - I neglected to wish you and Pat a Happy Anniversary.  I remember that you had a nice dinner out, with Scott and Jennifer.  You are five years behind us - we celebrated #60 a few months ago. 

Patricia - Your new oven sounds fabulous, and much better than what I remember as a toaster oven.  Did you order it from Amazon? I'm in desperate need of a good reliable oven, and would consider the possibility of getting one like yours.  I still have a built in oven, but it's old and is a little high for me - difficult for me to lift things in and out - especially when they are hot!

Mary Ann - Sounds like it will be easier for you all to have Tom's birthday party in GR, instead of Holland.  I hope the twins will be in attendance, so you can post some new pictures? 

I admire you for keeping up with your dental visits.  I'm embarrassed to say that I have neglected my teeth, since my dentist retired.  I do have a problem with a back molar, but if it really begins to hurt, I think I'll just have it extracted.  I could go to my husband's dentist, but I just can't seem to do it.  Too many years - too many dentists!  I think I'm just burnt out with it.   

Marilyne, yes we are  and will be in the 100's  for a bit yet.    I just stay inside.

Marilyn, in 1972 my long-time dentist retired.  He did not refer me to another dentist so for four years I only brushed my teeth.  Eventually, one tooth hurt so much I started going to a dentist near where I worked.  The tooth was abscessed and I had a root canal.  I really did not like that dentist because he and his assistant would talk over me.  He also wanted to replace every filling in my teeth.  One time he gave me a shot in my jaw and that night and next day I could not open my mouth to even put a fork in; I had to force the fork in, then turn it to get my jaw open enough to get food in there.  One time shortly after that, there was no one in the office when I left, so I did not make a next appointment.  I got to a point I needed to see a dentist and I mentioned it to Norm.  He had just sold a car to a dentist who had gone to the same school we did, also had had my dad as a teacher.  Norm suggested I call him which I did.  They took new patients and I have been with their office ever since and I think that was 40 years ago.  I have had periodontal work and I have three checkups a year because of that.

That new dentist's assistant was the mother of Bob Hogeboom, a football player for the Indianapolis Colts and it made a big impression on my "football-crazy" Indiana relatives to think that I knew Bob's mother!  I went to a game one year and found out later she had been to the same game but we missed each other.  That would have made it BIG if I had been able to introduce her to my relatives!

That dentist died a few years ago, but I am still with the practice and so far, very happily so!

Good morning from a warm and hazy Interior. We got up to plus 85 officially yesterday although it was both higher and lower in various places due to all the water around in rivers, ponds,  lakes, and streams. A few streets over were showing 90 and three blocks over were showing 83 so there can be a wide variety depending on where you are. It is 76 presently at 8:19 AM. The coming weather is said to be very warm mid-weeks and cooler with some showers on the weekends so no surprises there. Of course August is our rainy month with September normally cooler and clear and if we have snow it generally shows up close to Halloween. But with the weather continuing to change, it is really hard to generalize.

It is still noisy around here with all the heavy equipment for the electrical wires and new poles and laying the underground water pipes. I believe Sunday is the only day off and we are surrounded on three sides. They are working on half of the main streets, First through Twelfth and we are on Third. They expect to be finished sometime in October we're told with the other half of city center through Twenty-eighth due next summer. We'll see.

The way the streets are set up is numbered streets running North and South and named streets running East and West. However, due to rivers and other details, some streets can change names midway and the originals showing up again a block or so over. And with older towns incorporated into city boundaries, some have different types of street names. For example, in College, the main streets aren't numbered but named after the wives and daughters of some of the original professors. In South Fairbanks which used to be an older Native village and poorer part of town, before development, main streets are named after berries such as Blueberry Lane and often for the person whose homestead was there originally.

Farrah has been really affectionate lately. All is right in her world. She has her treats and she loves her rub downs. Now instead of raising her back to be petted, she flops over on her side and looks at me expectantly. She is in one of her changing periods where she exhibits new ideas and behaviors. She alternates that with periods of stable behavior. Alan jokingly accused me of acting like a behavioral scientist with her. I have a strong interest in genetics and psychology and tend to do the same with myself so suppose I do. He and Dora remain fascinated with their two and their neighbor recently acquired two cats from Pet Pride after meeting their cats so I'm happy with that.

Farrah is having an interesting time right now. First I was watching a Youtube video about how a vet deals with an angry cat. The hissing and growling immediately caught her attention and she went looking for the intruder. I tried holding her up by the monitor but she deals with sound and really doesn't associate that monitor with the sounds she hears. Then we had some raucous raven scrabbles outside that drew her attention. A few unattached males were trying to invade a mated pair's area and there were quite a few runs, dips, and chases for her right outside the balcony.

MarsGal and Marilyne, I did get it from Amazon and it is an Oster Large Capacity Countertop 6-Slice Digital Convection Toaster Oven, Black/Polished Stainless, TSSTTVMNDG. I use that and my 5-quart Instapot for just about everything. I generally only cook twice a month and freeze the rest for later so these are wonderful tools. My freezer is loaded with one and two cup freezer bags. I don't know why I ordered the microwave. Perhaps because I haven't had one for a number of years since my older second-hand model died. This will be a Panasonic Countertop Microwave with Inverter Technology, 1.2 cu. ft., Black . I would be interested in learning how an inverter works differently than a standard microwave. Mine is due the end of July, first part of August due to when I can order it.

I have donated the majority of my pots, pans and various slow cookers, rice cookers and yogurt makers. The Instapot, toaster oven and coming microwave will do their work. My kitchen actually has the majority of cupboards empty, it's amazing.

I have several subscriptions on Youtube, both animal related here and in Africa for the big cats. I also have ones, vlogs,  by a couple in Melbourne, Aus. A couple in London, England and a set of precocious three-year-old twins here in the states. It's interesting and it's free! And I love going around the world each day.
