shirleyn - Does that mean no more line dancing? I hope not, for your sake.  Seems like we have to give up all the fun stuff as we get older. :(
Yes, I definitely remember the Sullivan brothers! The movie about them still plays on TCM, a couple of times a year.  It's so sad, but I always watch it.  One of those true war stories that we shouldn't ever forget.  I remember watching it at a Saturday matinee, when I was a little girl, and couldn't stop crying.

Larry - I can definitely relate to Pat's reluctance, as far as a bathing suit is concerned!  The good part, is that it was just me, in the therapy pool.  The pool is quite small, and really not room for more than one person.  The therapist stands around the pool deck.  No one else was in the room.

wjoan

Larry & Shirley,  Candy planned to visit with a friend in Klamath Falls for a bit before she heads on up here.  Besides she is having trouble with the wheel that the guy in Tonapah supposedly fixed.  Have not heard anything yet this morning.

Our heat wave is supposed to continue thru this next week according to the weather site I am on.  UGH.

Mary Ann

Shirley, it has been good for both Tom and me that he came to live here.  I am sure he does not plan to marry again (but - who knows???) and it gives him a place to live.  I think this condo is a bit small for two independent people, but we make do.  I have never adjusted to the smaller condo, but I'm here and I don't want to move.  I will say that if Tom were not with me, I would be in a retirement home if I were still alive.  I have too many possessions, ones that I don't want to get rid of, but Tom will take care of that when the time comes.  I've been working on revising my Trust once again and also trying to tell about some of my possessions so my family will know the history of things, especially if they dispose of them.

Dot and I did our usual Sunday thing; we split a lemon meringue pie and she had an oliveburger and I had a hamburger.  We sit and talk for over an hour.  Dot still drives and I do not so she furnishes the transportation.  We alternate the cost of our Sunday brunch; she paid today and it will be my turn next week.

Our temperature here is about 75 degrees and I doubt it will reach 80 degrees today.  The cat and I should enjoy it on the deck.  Speaking of the cat - as I woke up late this morning, I was just throwing my bed together and he came in to help me make it.  I threw the blanket over him, he laid down and I just left him there.  Of course, he's out now and I think my bed is still unmade.  Waking up late, I did get dressed, but didn't take my pills so that's something I will have to do soon.

Some time ago, whether here or in Soda Shoppe, we talked about bird clocks.  At that time, I put in new batteries and it probably kept good time for two or three months.  It has been losing time recently and just now one of the birds sounded off.  Sometimes the cat will look at the clock, but he doesn't go after it.  I wish my clock would keep good time for a longer time, but it is fun to have a bird call in the middle of the hour.  I think when it is not light out that the birds don't call.

Yesterday I upgraded my Windows 10 and I noticed my mouse wasn't always acting properly.  Today it dawned on me that the upgrade wiped out my disable of the touchpad.  I would want to correct something, put the cursor there and before I could make the correction, the cursor would be somewhere else.  I have no idea where I was and I didn't finish the post, so it was lost.  It was nothing important and when I went back to the menu, it said there were no new folders to read.  Crazy computers - sometimes!  I was able to disable the touchpad.

Good evening, it is 84 degrees at 7:00 PM officially tonight and plus 86 on my northwest facing balcony. I wasn't feeling well and didn't sleep that much last night so I missed most of today's heat by sleeping from one to four PM in the cooler bedroom. Farrah, with her fur coat,  has been spending her time in the cooler bedroom as well.   We are expecting T-storms tonight and then sunny until Friday.

I had dinner tonight, consisting of either a yam or a sweet potato. I purchased three of each at the farmer's market and never thought to mark them for reference. I had one of the long ones,(salt, pepper, and butter); which I think is a yam? The other type is shorter and rounder and I really don't remember which is which but they're both good!

Farrah has been somewhat appeased today. I no longer really care for tuna but sometimes buy her a really small, 3 ounce can which she enjoys in portions. The issue is the small amount she eats of actual food versus her desire only for treats. Since her daily intake remains at 2/3rds. cup, I prefer the majority of that to be nutritional while she stubbornly insists it should be high sugar, high fat! Dora always tells me I sound like one of the "new age" moms and says it's simple, toss all treats. She is tougher than I am but I know Alan keeps hidden treats in the garage, but SHHH. :)

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone,
from the cool and pleasant,  rocky coast of Maine.

We have had lovely weather this year.   I do not have to
run my AC all of the time as per usual in the  Summer time
here.     A cooler dryer Summer is ideal for me ... and this year
we have been blessed.

All is well here.    My Grand Gals,  Maggie and Maeve are coming
home today from spending six weeks in Europe...    Wow...

All is well here!
Hi to everyone.

Sandy

Hi everyone.  A bright and sunny morning here in South Carolina.  We will be into the 90's this afternoon as we were yesterday.  We did get some brief periods of rain but not much yesterday and have a higher potential for more rain today.  The only thing on my schedule today is to pick up an online grocery order at Walmart later this morning.

Yesterday I went to Sunday School and then drove home and picked up Pat for Church.  We then went to Ruby Tuesday's for a delicious Sunday meal.  They are having a $13.99 special that is the salad bar, a choice of three entrees, and a dessert.  One of the entree choices was a petite sirloin steak.  So I had that with a side baked potato, the salad bar and topped it all off with a delicious chocolate dessert with cake and ice cream and caramel and chocolate toppings.

ShirleyN, at least you now know something not to do until your back is fully healed.  I hope you at least enjoyed the dancing while you were doing it.  Pat did go to physical therapy for six weeks and still does some of the exercises.  She got along pretty well yesterday.  It just seems to be a day by day situation.  She is fixing a special pillow to take with her to Church as the pews do not fit her back well and perhaps will be more comfortable.  I enjoyed your posting and it wasn't too long.

Marilyne, I am finding out these past few months that there has come the time for me to drop a few more of the things I have been involved with in the past.  This has been going on for awhile.  Just yesterday I wrote to our adult ministry person asking her to remove me from a committee I have served on regarding our Church senior ministry programs.  I don't want to make a commitment to future responsibilities and then not be able to fulfill them.  While I am not giving up my activities am attempting to avoid those involving a commitment and then I will do the activities as I feel up to them.

Joan, that is very frustrating when you spend good money to get something fixed and then discover it isn't fixed correctly.  I do hope Candy can enjoy her visit with her friend and not worry too much about her car.

Mary Ann, it is obvious that Tom has been a big blessing to you and allowed you to stay in your home.  I don't think my son has any plans to marry again based on something he said a couple of weeks ago. He has been married three times and all three ended up leaving him very saddened.  However, he loved his last wife dearly.  He is enjoying having his daughter living with him but likely that will not be a permanent situation as she seems to be able to locate men to date.  Sure glad that Dot is still able to drive.  That lemon pie sure sounds good.  It has been awhile since I had any pie.

Patricia, sorry to see you are not feeling well and that the heat is bothering you.  It sounds like Alan doesn't mind spoiling his cat with those hidden treats.

Sandy, it sounds like you have had the ideal summer.  Except for yesterday, the first week of August has been a bit cooler here than we have been having which is a bit unusual for August.  That has been a quick six weeks for your granddaughters but know all will be happy to see them safely back home.

Mary Ann

Sandy, as Larry said, that has been a quick six weeks for your granddaughters.

I seem to have a pattern of sleeping good one night but not the next.  I think I was able to catch up last night and this morning on the previous night's bad sleep.  In fact yesterday I woke up at 7:45 and had to trot to get ready for Dot to pick me up at 8:10.  I did get up about 5:30 this morning, then went back to bed about 7 am and woke up at 9:45.  As you can see, I have not been awake long this morning - and I'm not sure I am awake!

We are having an overcast day so far and I am sure I saw raindrops on the pond.  What I saw will not help any drought that may be around; I could have run between the drops and not gotten wet!

I upgraded Windows 10 and it enabled my touch pad on my laptop and if I don't watch out, that can cause all sorts of troubles.  It moves my cursor without my knowing it.  And in the process, I changed my font size that was unintentional.  Grr.

Time to see what mischief I can get into.

Mary Ann

shirleyn

Good morning to all ~

Marilyne, I sure hope I will be able to line dance in the future, as I really, really do enjoy it.  Right now (Monday) the back is still pretty stiff & it does not look good for Thursday dancing.

Joan, you are a lot hotter there than we are in Florida.  Predicting 90 every day this week, with little hope for rain.  But then, of course, you are colder in the winter than we are.

Mary Ann, I think if I ever am left alone, I would also move into a retirement home.  Just the upkeep here, alone, gets to me.  Since Danny had his stroke a year ago, he has been slowing down a lot.  Sleeps on and off 24 hours, his remebering is way off & he only takes out the trash for his share of duties.  Guess you know, that leaves all the duties up to me.  I don’t think we will leave this place as long as he is with me.
My mouse does not act properly either.  Larry once told me to put a credit card on top of the touchpad, but my touchpad is much bigger than a credit card.  So I have been writing my messages on a message page, then copy & paste when I have it completed.

Angelface, sorry to hear you aren’t feeling so great either.  By the way, I thought the yam was just another word for a sweet potato, didn’t know they were two different things.  I love ‘em too.

Sandy, good to see you & glad your gals made it back safe and sound.  My daughter is in Amsterdam â€" she has a friend that lives there & needed someone to come and house sit (and cat-sit).  She won’t be coming back until next month.  How lucky these young generations are.

Larry, yes, I did enjoy my line dance last week â€" too much, I guess.  And I am still doing my PT exercises, hoping they will help with the back.  I went grocery shopping last Sat & that seemed to set me back a little, especially after the Thurs. dance.

Okay, wrote another book didn’t I?  Geesh.  Anyway, hope you all have a great day.

~_~  shirleyn.

wjoan

Shirley, I for one enjoy your 'books'.  ;)

Lindancer

Shirleyn, good to see you posting.  Just a few years ago I was still teaching line dancing at the senior center and here in the park. I also played golf 3 times a week, then I turned 91 and the legs and breathing went somewhere.

Good morning from Alaska's Interior! Another bright, blue, sunny day which is unusual for August, our rainiest month due some say to our state fair residing within. The state fair starts the ninth and I may go as the local senior center which I also haven't gotten to yet, is sponsoring a free senior lunch. Also, a new perk of my recent status of becoming 66 is the free fair entry. So if I go, it is or would be a win win situation. I need to stop being such a hermit!

It isn't so much the sunny days or dry heat that is bothering me so much as it is my arthritis which used to be sporadic is now becoming a regular annoyance! One reason, I want to get a complete physical is not just my osteoarthritis but to check for sciatica or bursitis or some new villain!

Farrah has given up her intense scrutiny this morning and finally gone to her food dish for some "delicious nutritional kibble." I am sure I saw her mouthing something uncomplimentary under her breath as she went.... >:(

Sandy, I know you will be so glad to see your family home again, safe and sound! Our drought is said to be over but they're being cagey about saying it.

I wanted to remind everyone that Google is their friend;    https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+stop+the+touchpad+from+working&rlz=1C1PRFC_enUS682US694&oq=How+to+stop+the+touchpad&aqs=chrome.2.0j69i57j0l4.22288j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I for one always seem to write books in my posting and perhaps that is why I am such a fan of others doing so! Anyway, Shirley, it is so nice to see you posting, feel free to post encyclopedias if you must. We would love to see them or actually even just an emoticon as you go past! I'm sorry you hurt your back. I know how tempting it is to do too much while mending. I could also post a book about that!  :'(

Larry, last year I gave up the majority of volunteering and committee memberships and for now, I am only using my cart to carry folk's food boxes twice a month door to door. I am just not up to doing all of that stuff anymore, in fact, I have given up so much that some friends are again talking about doing interventions. The trouble is that for them, it often involves putting away my computer or Kindles and that results in harsh words and uneasy friendships until all is forgiven again.

From Epicurious;

http://www.epicurious.com/ingredients/whats-the-difference-between-sweet-potatoes-and-yams-article

"There is no mistaking the sweet potato casserole, no matter what sort of magic (marshmallows, candied pecans, streusel, etc.) you sprinkle on top.

There is, however, plenty of mistaking the sweet potato itself.

So let’s get things straight: A sweet potato is not a yam. A yam is not a sweet potato. And by the way, a sweet potato isn't even a potatoâ€"nor is a yam.

WORLDS APART
They're two different plants. The sweet potato is in the morning glory family, while yams are related to palms and grasses.

And they grow in different parts of the world: yams in Africa, where they originated, and also Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and Central America. Sweet potatoes in the United States, with North Carolina leading the way in production.

So at a typical supermarket, what you're buying is an American-grown sweet potato. True yams are imported and a rare find outside of ethnic grocery stores."

I need to take my own advice to remember Google is our friend!   ::)

Mary Ann

Patricia, thanks for the instructions for disabling my touchpad but none of them has worked.  Everything I have tried has started with printed instructions so it isn't something I have tried on my own.  I click Disable, Apply and OK.  Then I try to see if it has worked.  No.  I even restart my computer after I click on OK.  No dice!  Even now, when I hesitated a second, the cursor moved - twice - before it settled down.  It isn't nearly as bad as it was before I discovered the source of my trouble several months ago - that the mouse and touchpad were competing with each other.  I was able to disable the touchpad then, but now I've updated my Windows 10 and it does not want to disable the touchpad.  I'll figure it out some day - or get Tom into the act!

Mary Ann

shirleyn

By Jove - I think it worked.  I got to a point where it said do not turn off touch pad when the mouse is plugged in.  I tried everything else that did not work, so I clicked on the 'turn off'.  So far, while typing this message, it works just fine.  Time will tell.  If so, Thanks Angelface!!

Mary Ann

Good for you, Shirley, because my touchpad still moves.  Not as fast as the mouse, but I can make it move.  And it I don't watch, I find the cursor in a place where I do not want it.  When he's able, I'll get Tom into the act.  In the meantime, I'll take what I have.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

Patricia, thanks - right now I have bookmarked the site so I can devote some time to it.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I've been in and out most of the day, and then daughter Sandy came for dinner, so haven't had a chance to do much on the computer.  It's about 8:30 here now, and I finally have time to sit down and relax!

shirleyn - I liked reading your "book"!  I hope you write many more for us to read.  I'm glad you're feeling better, and hope you get back to line dancing ASAP.

Sandy - my grandkids are still in Europe, and won't be home until the end of August.  Gr-daughter is in Sweden right now, visiting a friend of hers, who went to school here in CA, but moved back to Sweden a few years ago.  Grandson and his friends were in Italy, the last I heard. They've probably moved on by now.  Our son and dil were also in Europe for two weeks, and especially liked Prague, and Brugge.(sp?)

Mary Ann - sounds like you're having some nice cool weather.  Our temps have finally dropped out of the 90's, and down into the 80's, which seems comfortable to me.  Tonight, when my daughter left, I walked outside to her car with her, and it seemed almost cold out there!  I looked at the temp when I came back in, and it was 66 outside.  That means it may go as low as 60 overnight?

wjoan - I hope your temps will drop as well, and you can get some relief from that Tri-City heat!

larryhanna

Hi everyone. It looks like we are in for another cloudy day with a higher percentage chance of rain throughout the day and evening than for the last couple of days.  The prediction is a high of 81 degrees today and that is most welcome.  Nothing on the schedule for today until this evening when we are going to go to the buffet at Pizza Hut.

I got up at 6:30 this morning and took my shower and shaved and got ready for the day.  Then I laid back down and did my daily reading, including reading the postings in the discussions I follow each day.  About 8 am I finally got up and got busy in the kitchen and have that work done.  Last evening Pat made pancakes and sausage for our evening meal, something we hadn't done for a long time.

Mary Ann, hope you can find a solution to the touch pad situation.  One of the laptops we had used one of the function keys to toggle the touch pad.  If I didn't have a credit card to use or it wasn't big enough to cover the touch pad area I have cut out a piece of cardboard to cover it and used magic tape on the side edges to hold it on the lap top.  On my Chromebook I am using several index cards held down the same way.  I think you are fully aware of what I have just written but maybe it will be helpful to others.

ShirleyN, I am like you in that if I were ever left along, which I do not believe will ever happen, I would go into a retirement home as quickly as I could.  Sorry to hear that Danny is slowing down and having a problem remembering.  It sounds like you really have your hands full.  What I wrote above to Mary Ann I should have written here to you.  I expect most of us using a laptop have experienced the same problem with the cursor jumping.  However, I also found out that I had a mouse that was the problem and when I replaced it the problem went away.  By the way, as Joan indicated, I also like your books and we missed you when you were not posting regularly.  I am trying to get my mind around the idea of not turning off the touch pad when using the mouse.  However, glad that is working for you.

Marilyne, you really have a traveling family.  Glad you are getting some cooler weather.

deAngel, I remember how active you were not long ago with the line dancing, golf and other activities you participated in.  At least you have some great memories.  Aren't we fortunate that we can at least watch a lot of golf on TV.  I never cared to play after giving it a try over 50 years ago but have really enjoyed watching it each weekend all this golf season.

Patricia, I hope you will give your local Senior Center a try.  Do they serve a weekday lunch?  My folks really enjoyed the Senior Center they participated in for a number of years and after I retired I participated in our County Senior Center for several years.  I was involved with the SeniorNet Learning Center that was housed in the Center for about 10 years and played bridge weekly for a couple of years.  My wife enjoyed going and working on a big jigsaw puzzle or playing games.  It sounds like it would be wise not to read Farrah's lips as she enjoys her "delicious nutritional kibble".  :)  I never really understood the difference between a sweet potato and a yam.  Thanks for the information.

Mary Ann

Larry, it is interesting that you mentioned the mouse itself because I have ordered a new mouse.  I feel my present mouse sticks to the mouse pad and I also ordered a new mouse pad.  My mouse problem is independent of my touchpad/mouse problem.  I'll continue to work on that.

Mary Ann

shirleyn

Good morning you all!  Another hot (90) one today.  But then, it is August after all.  :) I have my morning chores all completed, plus dusted the bedrooms.  I try to do one easy job and one harder job each day.  It doesn’t always work, but I try.  The harder job for today will be the shower doors.  Hard on the shoulder and back, but will go at it slowly.

Marilyne, I haven’t seen that Sullivan movie in a long time, and it is indeed a sad one.  I also remember seeing it as a little girl.  And crying.

Thanks Joan.

Gloria, if you stopped dancing at 91, I then have another 7 years to go.  I hope.

Angelface, thanks for the info on the yam/sweet potato.  We are now all well informed.  ;)  By the way, I am still holding my own on the typing without wandering all over.  Again, thanks.

Mary Ann, I hope you find an answer to your typing problem.  It sure is nice to not have to find that curser some place where it is not supposed to be.

Larry, I love your sausage and pancakes supper last night.  We often have a breakfast for supper.  A nice break from the usual.  My line dancing takes place at the county senior center.  There are always a lot of activities going on there.

And thus ends my ‘book’ for this day.  You all have a great day -

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone from the cool and rainy,
rocky coast of Maine!

I got up this morning and proceeded to put Mattress covers on my
Mattress and box spring.     We had a checkup yesterday and my
apartment is A-OK,  but as I live in public housing,  it is always
a concern that critters do not get in.     I am doing good but preparing
to be vigilant  so that critters never get a chance to take up
residence here.

I put Mattress covers on by myself  (full size bed)!!
And what a chore!!     Of course the first one I put on
went on rather easily  (box spring),  when I realized that
I put the mattress cover on the box spring....    DAMN!

So I had to remove it and start all over!   Getting it correct
the second try.     Then I tackled the mattress cover...
Yikes....  You know how mattresses can be difficult to
maneuver!!!    Well I did it, all by my self and I am still
standing.

Now to go take a shower and clean up after that work
out!!!

All is well here !!!    Enjoy your day,  Every One!
Sandy

Mary Ann

Sandy, congrats on taking care of your spring and mattress covers.  I have trouble with the corners of the bottom sheets and blankets so wait until Annie is available to help.  Actually, I do the helping, she does most of the work.

My Krazy Kat!  I went to make my bed this morning and tried to be quiet so Kendrick would not hear me and come into the room.  If I can get to the point the cover for the pillows is ready, I feel lucky.  Just before I got to that point, in came the cat.  I sat on the edge of the bed to pet him and that wasn't what he wanted.  I realized he wanted to get under the quilt cover.  He likes to get under the cover for the pillows so I raised the quilt and he got positioned and laid down.  I put the quilt over him and he's still there.  He has several "hidey holes" where he likes to stay and under that portion of the quilt is one of them.  He probably will be there until he gets hungry.

A nice day started and I think we'll be in the high 70s.  I'm dressed for it.

I haven't decided what mischief I'll get into yet.

Mary Ann

Sandy

When putting on mattress/box spring covers,
one has to take off the mattress/box spring and
stand it up...  putting on the cover from top down.

They are completely covered then,  before putting
the bed back together again.      It is very hard to
do,  alone.

But I did it!!!!   First and last time,   I hope!

I know you must remember my experience with those critters last fall. I spent a lot of money and the company sprayed all 196 apartments three times. I never actually saw a bug in my apartment but there were reports all over my floor and the problem was said to have originated on my floor by the elevators. Luckily I was on the other end of my wing from there.

However, I dried every piece of fabric I owned and then washed it and redried it. All of this on high heat. I purchased special bug proof zipper and covered zipper covers for both mattresses, and all pillows. I purchased a fabric steamer as that is said to kill them and bi-monthly ran it along each room's floor boards, outlets, and hot water heating units. I tore my couch apart weekly and ran that fabric steamer all over every turn, crevice, and crease. I had a spray bottle of 90 proof rubbing alcohol mixed three parts to one part water, ready to spray on any invader. I also due to the spraying company's instructions, moved everything to my balcony in a 2 day period, got everything off the carpet and moved all heavy furniture to the middle of each room. All food spent those months in my fridge along with one skillet and one pot. All canned food was moved to the balcony. The cupboards were sprayed all three times which according to the sprayers is the magic number. Everything stayed like this from October through February as they did all five floors, three times.     I also developed a bad case of psoriasis and to make it even more fun, a case of hives. To say I do not like crawly bugs is an understatement.  :tickedoff:

Then I read JeanneP. posts that her town's library has an issue and can't seem to get rid of those critters. They enjoy the glue in the book bindings. Now I can't go to the library, and every stray hair that lands on my shoulder is a potential threat. Until you have gone through that experience it is unexplainable.

The upshot is I finally got around to being serious about organizing, donating and trashing all my junk. Something I had been dabbling in for three years. It took having to rush everything out on my balcony in a two-day period for my hoarding tendency antipathy to really sink in and I finally did something about it.

Maintenance now checks each apartment as part of the bi-yearly inspections. And bringing secondhand stuff or furniture in is highly discouraged.

Mary Ann

Patricia, I'd never have the strength or patience to do what you did in debugging and downsizing.  And I must do something here because I've never adjusted to going from 1200 sq ft on one floor to 870 sq ft on one floor.  I did have and do have lower levels in each place, but stuff still accumulates.

Mary Ann

Mary Ann

No one has been here since I was here three hours ago but I thought I'd drop in anyway.  I just came in from sitting on the deck for a while.  Our outside temperature is 82 degrees and there is a nice breeze blowing.  I took the remains of a Sprite and sipped on that.  I also took out a phone, just in case.  I didn't need it!
There is a bright blue sky, well, not as bright as it has been, but it still is nice and there are fluffy white clouds, mostly to the north of here.  Not rain clouds.

Tom has been losing weight on purpose and to celebrate with him, Annie ordered some foods for him, maybe not what he'd order himself, but it's the thought that counts.  It is quite an assortment - cereal and crackers are the only things I can remember now.  She is a very loving person and she does love her dad!!!
