Perry Greeley Holden was the first professor of agronomy in the US, teaching at the University of Illinois at Urbanaâ€"Champaign. Later he became the first vice-chairman at Iowa State University. He also spent several years managing Funk Seed Company, ran for governor of Iowa (defeated) and was a director of  International Harvester's Agricultural Extension department.

Both the University of Iowa and Iowa State University are land-grant universities. I've never been out that far, but I have been to Michigan State and Penn State campuses which are also land-grant universities. I knew a little about land-grant universities, but never knew the scope of the original act that created them not that there were so many, including MIT.

Well, that got long. Sorry, I just love exploring and learning things and often like to share the things I discovered. I hope you don't mind that I get carried away sometimes. I have a minor interest in farming and gardening, and worked for several years at Rodale Institute which is a non-profit agricultural  experimental/research organization begun by J. I. Rodale.

Speaking of Rodale, I just discovered that Hearst Publications has bought out Rodale Publications. It was just announced several weeks ago. The former buildings, many of which were old buildings that were lovingly restored and overseen by Ardie Rodale will be turned into a wellness and senior center compound of some kind. I knew Ardie, Bob and Anthony Rodale.
