What a great start to this topic, Beryl!
Chocky, I could almost hear him sing.

Thank you so much my friends.

This was taken out the back door in Virginia and I thought it was cute to watch the male bluebird just sit there while she did the building!!"
:crazy2:
Typical male.
Lovely capture
Here is an example of a female's reaction when the male interferes with the nesting materials

Amusing. That stick doesn't look worth all that fuss to me, but I don't know much about building materials.
Great video, Beryl!
Place marking.
Thank you so much for your kind comments. :)
It goes to show in any walk of life the male likes to know best. Well she told him
Lovely photos, thank you for sharing Beryl :)

Oh what lovely birds....not long taken in my delivery of birdseed only this is my new home and I dont get to see so many birds as at my old home...They tell us in UK that Starlings have declined but at my old home I had many many Starling visitors yet have not seen one at my new home, yet I am living in a beautiful country/seaside setting, way down in the valleys....I have the usual Blackbird both male and female and of course everybody's favourite, the Robin....there have been the odd small bird visitors that perch near to my window, now if only I had my camera at hand I would have caught a few good shots....Now I know we have a nice bird room here I shall keep my eyes peeled and my camera at the ready.....Great photos Chocky, love the Blue Tit in flight...
Lovely capture
Mallard on fish pond
[attachimg=1]
Nice capture
Natureboy, that egret picture is incredible. The lighting gives a showy, stylized quality to the egrets.
And that mallard's fish pond isn't an ordinary fish pond; that's an expensive amount of koi. Where is it?
Fledgling Goldfinch
[attachimg=1]
He looks cold, Beryl. :)
I was saddened yesterday to see a large black crow taking a bird egg out of a nest in my redwood tree, and flying away with it in his mouth. This morning I saw two crows standing on the edge of my bird bath, eating something. When I went out to shoo them away, I looked in the bird bath water, and saw egg shells, and the remains of what would have been a baby bird. I think it was probably a dove. :'(
;)
Yesterday there was a video posted on my local news site of a pair of Eagles feeding a cat to their chicks. Sad ending for the cat which appeared to be rather young, especially if it had been someone's pet. What disturbed me the most was that none of the commenters to the article/video said anything for the cat. They were all either smart- alicky or outright good-riddance to the cat comments. I happen to like cats.
Me too. I love cats as much as I love birds. This is very sad.
I just pray the poor cat was dead before they started feeding it to the chicks
The "experts" (I forget who, a vet maybe?) said from the cam they thought the cat was already dead by the time it landed on the nest, but they couldn't tell if it was a scavanged roadkill or an outright kill by the eagle. I just hope it wasn't someone's pet, it looked a little like my Oscar.
This is one of the reasons that my vet once told me that an indoor-only cat can now live between 24 to 26 years. I had one live to 22 and one to 20 years. She further added that on the average, an outdoor or indoor-outdoor cat lived 5 to 8 years. People always have instances where their pet was different, but these are the ones cited by those notables. I used to think of them as throw away pets.
Here is a European Goldfinch in Breading plumage. The colours become quite intense when in the breading season.
I haven't altered this photo at all. I think he was calling to a lady in this photo
[attachimg=1]
Chocky, that is a beautiful bird. Wonderful photo.
Here is a pair of Great tits.
You can tell the difference by the male has a thicker bib and his black stripe which goes all the way down and round to his tail where the female's black stripe dwindles out half way down her abdomen.

Look like two little friends going for a walk.
It looks as though they're a little reluctant to put a foot down. ;D
The duck plays a minor role in this picture, but I wanted to share. It was taken in the Japanese Garden in Portland, OR. It took me a while to be sure that the bird was real, not bronze, he was sitting so still (there are some metal birds elsewhere). He stood there for a long time before flying off.

Great picture, Pat. At my first glance, I too thought it was a bronze. I had to look at it again, more closely.
Lovely picture. Well done

That is so gorgeous.
Thank you
I'm not feeling too good at the moment. A bit Fatigued from all the treatment I have had chucked at me. So I won't be out taking too many photos.
Here is another I thought was rather nice . It's not the same bird though.
[attachimg=1]
Another special one, Beryl. You do a great job at catching movement. :)
Cocky, nice captures. I love all the photos but my favorite is the Goldfinch. The colors on that bird are just beautiful.
I love the bird photos, but even more, the skill 0f the photographer in these well thought out photos!
Thank you all for your kind comments
Here is a little video that got lost . O
I have modified it a little so as to cut out my voice

Fun to watch, Beryl. A lot like the catbirds that nested in my honeysuckle a couple of years ago. :)
Being somewhat confined of late, the back deck seems to be my home. Not too much to get excited about, but a few new friends seem to be coming by in a more frequent fashion. This Red Billied Woodpecker seems to have moved into the area. Saw him a few times last Summer and was in hopes he would return. Not the best photo in the world, but will have to do for now. Some really nice photos in this thread. :) THANKS to all

J R Weems - Welcome to Seniors and Friends! :) Your photo of the Woodpecker is beautiful! Please return often, and visit some of our other discussions.
Great photo, J R Weems. It shows the details of plumage perfectly. I've always wondered why they're called red-BELLIED woodpeckers when the reddist part is the HEAD.
Pat, unsure of the answer to this one as I have often wondered the same thing. In the sunlight the head has a bit of orange / red look to it as well. Still good to see. Had a Pileated woodpecker stop by for a moment the other day but was in the house. I doubt I would of seen him from the back porch because of the trees. Sure wish he would move in. :)
With wildlife sometimes you get what you get. This Scaled Quail was doing his best to hide, but I sort of got him anyway. :)
Found only in the Southwest of the USA this was another first for me. :)

I just love this article about a magpie that I read this morning. Have you seen it?
http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-37519032
Yes Lovely story
Today two birds were having a tender conversation on the tree in front of my window. I have never seen or heard anything like it. I bet they are "tourists" stopping on the way of migration.
The pictures are not too good, too many branches on the arocaria, but maybe someone can help me identify them?
The size is about like a very small pigeon.
[attachimg=1]

Have had a look on the net but can't find a bird like it.
If you can get a better shot of it . It could help :)

I thought they looked much like our starlings, but I'm not sure starlings are the size of a small pigeon, however, they're pretty good sized.
Mary Ann
I am not familiar with the birds. I also didn't realize we had starlings in Alaska. But, apparently, with climate change they are moving north. They are in Juneau and there is a small population in Anchorage. The state is trying to get rid of them as they are a threat to some of our native birds.
yes it does look like Tristram’s Starlings but did not see any red on the wing. It was a first time viewing and never came back :(
Hi all
I have been in Hospital yet again. This time for my left knee.
Hopefully this time next year I will be able to walk
I think I'm lucky when I look around and I see people far worse off than myself
Here is the gorgeous............... Mr Blackbird
[attachimg=1]
Good shot, Chocky.
Great catch, Beryl. Looks like he's talking to you over his shoulder. :D
Your blackbirds are more appealing than our blackbirds. Or else you know how to get them to smile for the camera.
Too bad about your knee.
Our Blackbirds are the Thrush family
My knee is doing fine . can walk on it already :)

That is interesting. Larry hasn't put up any bird feeders here because there seem to be more cats in the neighborhood. So far we haven't seen the variety of birds here that we saw in Ocala. I'm going to bookmark the page.
The lab at Cornell also sponsors the winter bird count. If you want to participate, check out the Cornell U. website--it will take you to the birding page.

WOW! Just like a mirror. Chocky, you do catch the most amazing bird pictures I ever saw.
Bubble's right, Beryl. This is another of your amazing bird photos. Thanks for sharing.
I hope you're feeling better and that you have a lovely Christmas.
Thank you kindly for your comment.
I am a lot better with another new knee to boot. I still lack balance though,
Glad you are better, beryl. Love your photos.
Thank you.
It's freezing cold and not a nice time for photography
Thank you all for your kind comments. I am getting there slowly but surely
Here is a photo with a reflection . I took a while ago. I think it is very pretty
[attachimg=1]
I like this photo even better. Very nice!
Beryl - Very professional looking photos. A pleasure to see and enjoy!
Thank you kindly for your comments :)
The weather at the moment prevents any photography.
I've seen 2 large pileated woodpeckers in the last couple of days. I think one is a male--he's quite large and the one which could be a female is more cautious and I can't decide if it's another male. My Alabama bird book says the female is not much smaller than the male. He's a gorgeous bird. He's been in my back yard but when I saw him last was flying across the street to another large oak tree. He may have just been hunting insects in both yards.
Sue
We have a couple of red-bellied woodpeckers that are regular visitors. One of them pecks out a signal on the chimney cap when he apparently is asking for someone to go out and toss him a peanut. He often grabs it out of the air when one is tossed high. We have a good assortment of wildlife here even though we are "city people". However we are near a golf course, a hiking/walking path, and a park.
Where I lived before moving to this condo 35+ years ago, I had an outside TV antenna. One day I heard a strange noise that vibrated throughout the house. I also had a water softener in the basement and I thought the noise might have come from there. I checked and all was quiet down there. It wasn't a steady noise, but would start up every few minutes. I finally went outside to see if it was something outside and a flicker was on the TV antenna and would peck it every so often. There was nothing I could do, so I bore with it. It was both funny and unnerving (at first).
Mary Ann
Rick, you are so lucky to see and know the birds around your area!
MaryAnn, I don't know what a Flicker is, but you are right about it being unnerving.
A Flicker is a member of the Woodpecker family ad very pretty
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Flicker+bird&biw=1920&bih=963&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj2ndbOweDRAhVIDsAKHVN_BlQQ_AUIBigB&dpr=1
Chocky, very pretty, patterned birds! I was curious so I googled to see if we had any flickers and found there is one called a Northern yellow-shafted. I also listened to the calls and recognized the sounds! So I have learned something new, thank you!
Also, my cat Farrah was intrigued by the calls coming in "her" living room! ;)
http://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/northern-flicker
The flicker that caused so much commotion at my former residence was the one with the red spot on the back of its head. All that vibration - and I could not figure out where it was coming from. I really thought something was coming apart.
Mary Ann
Well done angelface555.
They do make quite a commotion don't they? :)
I have heard that call for years and never had an idea where or what was causing it. Living in the middle of a large arboreal forest, bird sounds and calls are a constant throughout all the seasons.

I was about posting this in our newly run " Show me a Photo of..." when I got pipped at the post on the give me a " bird " subject so, rather than let this go to waste...I am posting it in here...This was taken by me several years ago at a place called The Swiss Gardens...a stately home and gardens very popular with weddings in its beautiful settings...at this place you would be wandering around amongst various Peacocks which at the time I took so many photos, think I must have had an obsession with them...they are such beautiful and elegant creatures....Link...

Beautiful!
Lovely!
I'm so enjoying browsing through the wonderful pictures in this new folder.
Re: red-bellied woodpeckers..... Two woodpeckers come to my feeder and I finally noticed a difference in the red feathers - so I "researched".
If you get a chance to see a front view of the red-bellied, you'll notice a red spot on its "belly". The redheaded one has red feathers farther down its neck and a plain belly.
JeanneLee, may I occasionally send a picture for you to post?
Jackie, what a beautiful display by that peacock. Lucky you - I've never seen one open like that in person.
Callie, I'll be glad to post any photos for you.
That's quite a display from the peacock. Where I grew up there were two or three of them. Have you heard their "cry" (or whatever it's called). I always thought of it as a giant cat's call and at one time could imitate it.
Rammel...
...there was more than one Peacock in those gardens...yes I love the sounds of Peacock, the sounds were all around as we walked...This is a place we have been to a couple of times over the years, it is right next door to the famous Shuttleworth planes museum which I have been to see the old planes flying displays...I remember around 5 years or so, one Sunday with a rambling group doing a walk through a country lane leading to the back of the airfield, when all of a sudden over the hedge in front of us was a very old open top plane with a " Biggles " dressed pilot, goggles and brown leather jacket...so low going over our heads we waved to him, he waved back, of course I didn't think to take my camera with me...
Jeanne Lee...
...the last time I visited the Swiss Gardens, I was snap happy with my camera, I lost count of the amount of photos I took just of the Peacocks, I am sure I have some more photos, after I had a good clear out...or maybe this was the only one I saved...
I am happy you all enjoyed the Peacock display...
Took this photo of a visiting Buzzard yesterday, sat on back garden fencing...
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/zpLy9q.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pnzpLy9qj)
Amazing photo Jackie! We don't have them here so I've only seen photos from the other states. To me it looks like a cross between hawks.
Angelface ( Patricia ) you can see how well it was camouflaged amongst the branches...size-wise it couldn't be missed...it was the size of a small cat....It sat there pruning itself for quite some time, I was hoping and waiting to get a photo of its full wings, or when it took off in flight.... I wasn't quick enough and didn't get a good shot...First time I've seen a Buzzard up close... well one that stayed around long enough for me to look at it...
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/id4I2m.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pmid4I2mj)
Vanilla Jackie, the buzzards I see here seem to be much larger than your buzzard. They have wing spans that look to be at least 2 feet or more when coasting around our neighborhood. We have lots of heavily wooded lots in our neighborhood and many small birds, squirrels, and chipmunks which attract the buzzards.
Sue
Nice photos, Jackie. We used to see them when we visited the Ocala National Forest but haven’t seen any here in Niceville.
FlaJean and Sue...
...thank you...I wish I had caught it in flight, I dont think my photos do it justice for size...
