Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

Don't care for phones, still like writing letters and miss receiving them. Always loved camping and outdoors. Could still do my cooking which I like to do.  Long as I have books could let the TV go if could run just a vcr for film be OK
Would have to have pets. Always wanted to live in a log cabin. Could do it there.
Have 2 GC that would visit. For rest of family. No, they have to have all the luxuries .

JeanneP   It is Green Bank, West Virginia take a look on Google Map, and YouTube.    Would be a quiet spot, wonder if they found anything scary out in space?

JeanneP

I should remember that name as it is the same as the girls school I attended for 16 years in UK.

HURRAH!  It appears that bothersome "Install Windows 10" popup that loaded everytime I started up my laptop is gone.  I tried several of the things suggested around the internet to get rid of it, but nothing worked like, I hope, finally getting beyond the deadline to download it.  [ I wouldn't attempt to monkey with the registry...that is way above my skill set.  ]

wjoan

Mine finally went away also about 3 days ago.  Glad it is gone.

This is good to hear for those that did not upgrade.  Got it from How to Geek site.

Windows 7 will be supported with security updates until January 14, 2020, while Windows 8.1 will receive security updates until January 10, 2023. You can always find these support dates on Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle fact sheet web page.

So, if you’re still using Windows 7 or 8.1 on your PC, that’s fine. They’re still officially supported, and Windows 7 in particular is widely used in businesses. Leave Windows Update enabled and you’ll keep getting security updates until 2020 or 2023.

jane

Thanks, Jack.  I'd changed my Windows update setting so Win10 wouldn't download automatically.  It looks as if I can now go back and catch up.  I couldn't download other updates without getting Win10.  I also couldn't find the update that supposedly was Win10 so I could disable it.

Relief now.

jane

OOPS...not so quick.  When I went to download the important updates, guess what popped up....YEP....downloading Win10.  RATS!!

Jack, I copied your post and reposted it in the Soda Shoppe with a attribution to you, for those who never come here. I thought it might be of interest to many there.

Also saw the following at that site; "Windows 10’s second big update, dubbed the “Anniversary Update”, arrives on August 2, 2016. This is a huge update that touches every corner of the operating system. It includes many, many more changes than the November update did."

Mary Ann

Re Win10, I am not changing my update info, at least not for some time.  I don't trust Win10.  I do, however, forget to go to Update to see what other updates there are.  I also was glad to get rid of the popup about downloading Win10.  I figure it wrecked Win7 on two computers and I'm not going to let it take over this one.

Mary Ann

jane

Unfortunately, the &^%$ popup is back!  Grrrrr...surely it'll stop soon.  I have 158 important updates I can't get because it insists on downloading Win 10 first and I'm having NONE of that.

Tomereader1

I discovered that somehow, sometime, notifications about Windows Update ceased to come automatically to my computer.  So...today I had 102 important updates.
It took about 6+ hours to get them to load, then install. Now I have 12 others. which are now loading.

jane

How did you get around not downloading the Install Windows 10 download?

Even when I just choose ONE of the 152 important downloads, the Install Windows 10 starts to download automatically.

angelface555

Jane;

"Microsoft has been increasingly aggressive in its attempts to push consumers to download Windows 10. Starting today, the company is upping the ante once again. As of now, Windows 10 is now classified as a “Recommended” update, which means many Windows 7 and 8.1 users will download and begin the installation automatically.

By default, Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 shipped with updates enabled and a second box â€" “Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” checked as well. Plenty of users have changed these settings, but you can bet millions of people haven’t. We’ve written before about the power of defaults, and in this case, leaving automatic updates on has been a good idea for many users."

jane

Thanks!  I turned off the automatic download thing months ago...hence 153 "important" updates that have not installed.

I have hunted and hunted for the one identified as the Win 10 installation, and it's never listed in the updates list.  However, it's the first thing that tries to download and i stall, regardless which of the 153 I try to download alone.

Jane

wjoan

Jack, that is good to know.  Thanks.

Jane, did you check if this box was marked?  "Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” checked as well."

I downloaded the massive W10 update yesterday and only noticed my computer ran a littler faster. I was concerned as some tech sites warned about older programs eliminated, so I moved these to an external. After all that, my older programs that worked on W10 before, do now as well.

The issues some folks are having with W10, I had with Vista and ME.

Almost everything I have is on an external and my off bandwidth Dropbox app as well. I tend to leave them there and just unplug my external and only link to my Dropbox. My Windows Documents, Pictures, Music, and Video, are all empty. It's all on the external and Dropbox, so I have extra room.

A warning about the windows program One Drive. It seems easy to use. However, I have noticed that once something goes in, it's hard to get it back out. I have issues moving those files to Dropbox, and when you delete in One Drive, often they show back when the program reopens. You also are not able to delete One Drive.  I leave it empty.

Tomereader1

All the Updates have now been downloaded and Installed, and in check which updates have been installed, there shows "nothing" about any of them being Windows 10.  Is there a secret code to deciphering which update might contain Win10?  Mine nearly all say "Security Update, etc.).

Windows ten has a supposed program that answers all your problems, questions and issues, called Cortana. It is actually only a souped up version of their Bing search engine which isn't that good, takes up enormous amounts of bandwidth and is even harder to get rid of as Microsoft keeps closing those options. Here is help from How to Geek.

Tomereader1, did you check if this box was marked?  "Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” checked as well."

What's in the new W10 anniversary update?

http://www.howtogeek.com/248177/whats-new-in-windows-10s-anniversary-update/

jane

Patricia,
Yes, I unchecked about recommended updates the same as important updates.  I really don't want Win 10 because I'm told Quicken 2010 won't work with it.

I can't seem to find why the Win10 download keeps insisting on installing before it'll download any 8.1 updates.

jane

I've read that Windows 10 (GWX) update  is KB3035583.

I, however, cannot find that anywhere on my list of updates, and yet I continue to get that popup to install 10.

RAMMEL

The " GWX Control Panel" mentioned there (from last post) was mentioned here earlier. It has worked for me.

Got it, Patricia!  Thanks again.

I have a question about a flat screen TV monitor which could also apply to a flat screen computer monitor.

Are those monitors repairable?  Norm gave my nephew one he had in Florida after he sold his Florida place and it bit the dust.  Tom is of the nature "if it's broke, don't fix it, replace it".

Mary Ann

   Mary Ann ---

FWIW, and with no valid knowledge of this.  I would say he's correct. I doubt you could find someone who would fix it. The screen is pretty much a fixed thing. The electronics probably in a chip that is embedded into a small circuit card that is likely no longer available (if it ever was to the public).  If there's an intermittent trouble that obviously was a bad solder joint, it might be fixable - but that would be a lucky find  :D

Rick, thank you.  I won't bug him to see about fixing it (I haven't so far).

I am using a monitor for my TV at this time' have for 2 years? A Sanyo.  It is 19 inch which was to large for  computer space. Works fin. Tv and monitors are throw away items now. Cheaper to buy than repair.
