Oldiesmann: Relevant links can be found in topics in the Homemaking, Food & Garden board. I'll see about moving them over to articles here when I get a chance.

Oldiesmann: Found them. They're on the CP site: https://www.christianphotographers.com/recipes/recipeindex.html

Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

Domestic Goddess: Is this correct, if one would like to post/share a recipe, we do so here?  If so, was searching to see if there were separate recipe categories?

Oldiesmann: The chat can be accessed from the menu but I don't kow how often anyone is in there

General Computer Q & A

Rick, like computers the opinions on Fosamax vary, I had real problems with it.   One opinion

I have a HP Laptop and it has been plugged in for several years. I do on occasion unplug it and sit on the sofa with it on my lap. Runs good either way . It does have a two level charging feature. My guess is that it is to recharge it fast, but to not overcharge it when left plugged in.

I also recall some here have in the past commented that they use their laptops plugged in.

Batteries and their charging requirements seem to be peculiar things, with varying opinions about what is best.

Conclusion - If it works for you, keep doing it

I started fosamax a month ago. No side effects yet. Too early to know it's working.

Maryz that is good to hear.   I am sure many benefit from it.   Think I was turned off by the multiple  pages of info that came with it.  At any rate I had some reaction and quit taking it with my doctors approval.

My laptops are always plugged in and I do not think that is the source of my problems.  I have thought of it as charging the computer battery.  I don't know if that is so, but they work anyway.

What is the difference between a laptop being plugged in and a desktop being plugged in?  Does a desktop have a battery?

Mary Ann

RAMMEL

The desktop does have a battery BUT it's use is very different than that of a laptop.
A laptop battery is used to make it operate when not plugged in (like a flashlight).

A desktop battery is used to hold important startup info. The desktop uses it's plugged in power supply to operate the computer.

Rick, so my computer is plugged in all of the time, what is that doing to the battery?  On my oldest laptop, I am sure the battery is dead, but I can use the computer as it is plugged in.  I don't use my computers unplugged.

Mary Ann

If the battery is dead, don't unplug it. If it runs well you could likely get a new battery for it.

There are so many variables - between battery types and manufacturer of the battery and/or the computer, and technical opinion,  that it is difficult to say what is right, or the best thing to do.

I take the battery out of my laptop, and so run it always plugged in.  I'd heard the battery can overheat if laptop plugged in all the time...no idea if true, but see no reason to leave the battery in if I'm running it from the wall outlet.

shirleyn

Thanks Rick.  I shall leave it plugged in.

Mary Ann

Jane, the battery on that particular laptop is dead, possibly from overheating, but I don't know.  The vent for the computer is on the bottom and I've used a board under it to give the setup some stability (what do I know???) and I could feel heat through the board (1" thick).  Anyway, it was better than putting it directly on my lap.  The computer is a few years old and one that I put W-10 on over W-7 so I hesitate to get a new battery; they're expensive.

This laptop I'm using now has W-7 only and the cursor moves around without my help or wishes.  The size font goes up and down, then settles somewhere in between.

If I get another computer it will have W-10 only on it.

If I were to use  a
laptop,  I would get something like
this:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Ventilated-Adjustable-Laptop-Stand/dp/B00WRDS8H0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1475342889&sr=8-6&keywords=laptop+accessories

To ventilate the computer and keep it from
getting too hot.

It is adjustable,   and looks to be quite
comfortable.   I would look around
and find one that I liked and would
fit me...

Mary Ann

Sandy, thank you for that link.  I did buy a similar base at one time the had a USB cable to plug into the computer.  There was a fan to cool the computer and eventually the thing burned out.  Recently I have put two note pads under the computer on top of the board I've used for years and that works OK, but that computer is on its last legs.  This computer I am using now has the vent at the side so I don't have the trouble with the heat.  I will, however, look into the stand on your link.  Thanks.

Mary Ann

Sandy

I am sure that department stores near
you (Walmart,  etc)  will have them for
you to look at and see if will fit your
needs.    I know that there are  al  lot
of different styles...

Have a good search.

I have a thing to put under my laptop, keeps it at a good slant, slotted for ventilation, doesn't have a fan. I got it at staples, I think. I'm not at home so can't give you brand name. It works great.

MaryTX, the one Sandy showed from Amazon looks good and I'll investigate that.  I may go to my nearby supermarket to see if they have that one or something similar.  My problem is transportation because my nephew works during the day and is very good about taking me to appointments so I hate to ask him to take me shopping.  He does order from Amazon, using his son's Prime.

I'm home now.  My device is a Targus brand - and I think I ordered it online rather than getting it from Staples.

Mary and Jack:  I took Fosamax for almost 10 years and it did help my bone strength.  At the end of the 10 years, my oncologist and my GP both wanted me off it--because many long time users began having thigh bone fractures.  So my doctors suggested I'd taken it long enough.  No side effects and my Dexa bone scans looked great.  I think both doctors thought 5-10 years should be the maximum.  Sue
P.S.  I think Jane (Iowa) took it also.

MaryTX

My first Dexa scan showed severe osteoporosis so I went on Fosamax for several years with no problems and much improved scan results.  About the time the Fosamax controversy started, I had to change doctors and my new doctor put me on Actonel which is similar.  About two years later, my scan showed osteopenia so went off it.  I take calcium daily and my last scan two years showed improved osteopenia.

I also had severe osteoporosis, but I won't take Fosamax and others like that.  I did take Tamoxifen after chemo for cancer, and it was supposed to help with bones. I was taken off that after 5 yrs. I now take Evista which is to help with cancer returning and bones.

So many drugs..so much confusion by me.   ???

Candy...I"m not Jack, but the HOME is the button at the top...or bottom...depending on which way you have your IPAD standing.  It's on the edge of the IPAD.

I used to slide to open the IPAD, now you press that "button" on the lower or top edge...
