Oldiesmann: Relevant links can be found in topics in the Homemaking, Food & Garden board. I'll see about moving them over to articles here when I get a chance.

Oldiesmann: Found them. They're on the CP site: https://www.christianphotographers.com/recipes/recipeindex.html

Oldiesmann: I'm not finding anything related to recipes on the site. I'll do some digging through the Internet Archive and see if I can dig them up. It's possible that got lost in the big server crash back in 2016

Domestic Goddess: Is this correct, if one would like to post/share a recipe, we do so here?  If so, was searching to see if there were separate recipe categories?

General Computer Q & A

I would like to ask a "General Computer" question if I may.
I use AOL Desktop.  About 3 days ago, it seems to have changed itself from one version (9.6.2) to (9.8.2).  I never noticed it, but when I went to put something in my Personal Filing Cabinet, it was Empty.  You can save stuff on "Save on AOL", but I was in the habit of saving some items in Save in Personal Filing Cabinet.  Anyone have any "fixes" here for this?  There are some on-line, but don't seem to be ones I can utilize.  Help!!

MaryTX

I'll ask my sister.  She still uses AOL.

Thanks Mary, I'll appreciate it.

MaryTX

Tomereader, my sister's answer to your question:

"I also have 9.8.2 but I think that is the one I downloaded.
Everything is in my saved filing cabinets so I can't be of much help.

There tech line is very helpful and quick at answering questions."

I didn't know that Yahoo had a desktop.

Hi everyone...need help ....my windows defender is showing I need to check for new definitions...I have that square checked on the options..to check for new definitions before scan...so how do I do this??   Thanks in advance..CC

jackwv

CC it should update daily and give you the date of last date.  You can go to Defender, click on update and it will give you the info, but there is also a tab for you to update anytime manually.

Cottoncandy

Thank you Jack...I will try that..It's never done that before...CC

JeanneP

I have had all my icons on my desktop just where I wanted them. all of a sudden they have gotten so large. All places changed and most have blank white  where before they had The Firefox emblem on them.  I have moved them all where I had them but they keep going back to a different place again.
Must have clicked on someplace not suppose to.
Still on W7 and no long have the manual for W7Been so long since I knew what to do when setting up this computer.

Still want update new definitions....don't know how to do it manually CC

Click on the update definitions tab.

Tomereader1

Jeanne, my icons do that every now and then.  Don't know why, and I'm on AOL.  I just put them back where they belong, and after I have shut down overnight, they will either be correct the next day, or not.  Mine don't get larger, they stay the same size.

Cottoncandy

Jack...my defender is probably an older version...I have home..and scan...but not update...CC

Mary Ann

JeanneP, it's been a long time since I had that happen, but I think I used to right click on the mouse and something would come up about arranging icons.  There might be two things - one would be to make it automatic, the other to arrange them yourself.

I don't have any icons except the Recycle Bin on this computer (W-10) so I can't check it for you.

Open Windows Defender. Click on Tools, then Options. You should see a box there "Check for updated definitions....    Be sure there is a check in it.

CC what version of windows are you running.   Also if you run another program for virus you have to turn it off and Defender will turn back on.  In settings also be sure you have the real time protection button turned on.

MaryTX

Jack, I use Win 10 and Malwarebytes.  I have always turned Defender off and the next day it was back on.  I haven't looked at it for a few days but did after reading this discussion.

I wish I knew how to do a screenshot.  Defender is turned off, says I have another virus program running and to delete it and turn defender back on.  It has never done this before, just automatically turned back on.

Any thoughts?

Mary

Windows Defender is one of a number of antivirus programs, Mcafee and Norton among them that will attempt to either shut off Malwarebytes or any second opinion antivirus program or attempt to have the user do so. The more Microsoft updates their browsers the more they will update Windows Defender to continue shutting other programs off. You might want to go to a reputable site and see various program rankings before you decide on Windows Defender as your sole antivirus program.

That's odd. I am running Avast on Windows 10 and have Windows "turned off". It recognizes that I have another antivirus and on but requests to do a quick spot check every few days, which I don't mind. It does not attempt to shut down either my Avast nor my Malwarebytes.

Because Avast doubled it's sale price for renewing the paid version, I let it lapse. That means I get the annoying pop up that tries to tell me I am now vulnerable now that my paid version is expired. I ignore it, but one of these days, I may take a look see if I can shut that notice off.

Right now I am trying to figure out how to fix a problem on my Ubuntu. After one of the updates a few weeks ago, the print manager decided it can't find my printer anymore. I tried a few different things and downloaded the latest cups file and the latest version of the print manager, but haven't figured out how to install them. My Ubuntu version is debian. The cups file is a tar file. The print manager file uses a run program that is nice, but it keeps telling me I need cups files and some others before it will complete installation. One of these days I will figure it out, but in the meantime I just transfer what I want to print to my laptop and hook that into the printer.

angelface555

MarsGal, you are lucky, perhaps it's the Ubuntu?

There are several customer questions and several reviewer sites having issues with WD saying they have no antivirus and they go to settings and WD has turned on and their antivirus is shut down and off or crippled. Several folks like WD and several do not. It is all in what you need and or want. While I learned how to turn off Cortana as it is a memory hog and only Bing search engine given a "voice."

I cannot shut down WD as it is an integral part of the system and it periodically turns itself back on and I have to go back in and re-shut it down. It even tells you in the description that it will turn back on if you turn it off and subsequence updates combined with W10 updates makes it worse in my own opinion. I have my own paid antivirus program which consistently scores high and I have used since 2000.

For myself, I do not need or want WD. Microsoft is forcing it on people using Windows 10. People should be allowed a choice and to go by what technical sites, readers, reviewers, and users say and post.

Rammel....I opened Defender..went to tools then options...there is a check in the box that says.....check for updated definitions before scanning.....so I assume it's doing that...just  annoying that the defenders icon stays in the task bar..when opened it says "check for new definitions"...CC

Something to try ---

Go back to the place I mentioned above and REMOVE the check mark - Apply and/or Save.
Close everything then shut your computer off.
Restart your computer.
Go add the check mark and Apply/Save.

See if there's a change now.

I had MS Security Essentials on this older W7 . Looks like it has not ceased working.  I can clik on the Icon on my desktop and the window does not come up showing when it was checked. I had to to scan every Sunday at 3pm. Worked fine until about 2 weeks ago.
I suppose it is time to replace computer and go to W10. Hate to do it as I am not using the Desktop that much anymore.. Fact not getting on the Internet as much at all.  Very few people I know E-Mailing.
I think that the Iphones have now taken over.

Rammel...tried your suggestion...didn't work...guess I will just ignore the icon in task bar..thanks for your help CC

Pop-up while using Firefox
Chosen solution

No - Mozilla doesn't "patch" Firefox, it issues updates via a .mar file and it is always from a mozilla.org domain.

CC,
Go back to that place at Tools<Options and scroll down to near the bottom.  At the bottom of the area called "Real-Time Protection Options" you should see "Choose when the Windows Defender icon .........".  Choose  - "Only if ....." or "Always"  then click on SAVE
