Don I had a visitor and cut that reply short, as usual did not make my comment clear.

I did just go to Edge, Google, Seniors and tried, it did not work.

I then went to IE, Google, Seniors and tried and it worked.   I keep Seniors in favorites in IE and the fonts etc work.   Unable to determine why so simply use IE usually.    I still use Edge at times but do not when I want to go to the discussions.

Thanks for confirming that, Jack.

Patricia, call me lucky but Windows Defender has kept me clean.  My daughter here for fathers day, has a 3 year old Toshiba laptop and two months ago at my prodding she upgraded to windows 10.  I mentioned Defender to her and she was not aware it was on her machine.  We went to it and sure enough it had been doing a quick scan and updating without her ever touching settings.   We checked history and no items were quarantined or for that matter detected.

Jack ransomware is a whole different animal than your common everyday virus or bug.

They put a complete stop to the California 911 with no way to handle emergencies except for paper and pen. Then they blackmail the department into paying a ransom if they want their system back. In this case, instead of paying the ransom, they are completely redoing a new system.

RAMMEL

I wonder why they don't keep and use a current data and program backup. It shouldn't take a knowledgeable tech too long to reload.
We always had several of varying ages. Daily if not more often due to recent changes.

Patricia I understand the difference, but thought your posting about it in Windows 10 discussion might cause some concern.  Even the pros are having problems with ransomware.

Guess I gave the impression Windows Defender would stop it, but was just relating my daughters pleasure in finding she was up to date with it and the program had kept her machine clean.

Okay, I thought I was set up  with my new computer with Windows 10.  This morning another problem arose.  When I turned it on, it took a long time & then the screen was black, instead of the usual blue.   I cannot get into my documents nor can I turn it off.  The spot where I would click on to see my documents, says something from explorer.EXE.  When I right click it, it says "the server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect.  Check username and password".  What does this mean to a dummy like me?  Any help would be welcomed. >:(

shirleyn

Problem solved.  I figured out how to turn it off (just held the button down for 10 seconds - couldn't click on the box on the screen cuz the box wasn't there).  Then pressed the button again & it started up all by itself.  Geesh!  Thanks anyway.

Well, I am befuddled again... most of the time anymore.  Tonight my Avast icon has an X over it, says my computer is not protected.  What ever happened in the few hours since I checked in (radar) and now?  I have not turned the computer off... just let it go to screen saver, something I've had to do since Win.10 took over.  I know Avast has been pestering to have me upgrade but I like free....  Could it be that "Defender" is hiding out and I don't know how to find it, & maybe turned off Avast?  Between the RV & computer I am about ready to just shut down the outside world!!!  Suggestions, anyone?  PLEASE~

I found Defender, it is on & running & did a scan at 4:00 am.... today... does it interfere with Avast?

Shirley

Another day & Avast still tells me that "You are Unprotected!"... when I click to start now it gives a pop up that asks me if "I am okay with this program making changes to my PC".   Another button offers to resolve all problems.... but I don't know what to tell it when it opens.  At first I just thought Avast was doing a push to make me buy the "pay for" version.  Now I don't know if the Defender has taken over or what.  Just happened recently (since Windows 10)....Anyone else have Avast that is getting along with Defender?

jackwv

Shirley I had Avast a long time back but deleted it and just use Defender.  You may have a conflict.  Wonder if this link helps

Shirley, since I got Win 10, I got rid of McAfee and use Defender and run Malwarebytes once a week.  Haven't had any problems.

We didn't want Win 10 on the desktop but woke up one morning with it!!!  The only problem I have had with it was of my own making.  I asked the guys here. They told me how to correct it.  I did and haven't had a problem since.

Shirley

Thanks, Jack & Mary.... I checked the link, Jack, but am too "computer illiterate" to understand what it meant.  When I clicked to see what to do on the pop up from Avast, it asks "if I mind that this program was going to make changes to my computer"...  I don't want to give them permission to do "whatever" so just back out & hope it doesn't cause problems.  From what I can tell, Defender is running scans & hopefully stopping what Avast was taking care of.  I have never been able to keep this from going to screen saver mode in maybe a minute when I pause.... made the changes where it used to work but won't change.  I wonder if it didn't do a good download to 10.... but I don't know how to change back to 7, or if I should.

Mary, my son was here & let it do the update to 10 because it notified me it was going to to it at 11:00 pm that night.  I had said no to it for months..... I notice MS has been sued & gave in to one lady that lost a lot of business because of 10.... and she had not given permission for it to be installed.  Wish there was some compensation for mental stress... cause I'd be worth a million!   :crazy2:

Thanks for the come back about Defender, since it is working I will ignore that Avast icon & just wait & see....

jackwv

Shirley the question "do you mind that the program makes changes" is common with my computer.  Would bet Microsoft wants to avoid any harm that might be done.  I do not have a problem generally allowing.  I believe, were it me, that I would remove Avast.
Like Marytx I still run Malwarebytes if I think I may have been hacked but since using Defender the Malwarebytes has not picked anything up.

Mary Ann

I think when the computer asks if you want to allow "whatever" to make changes, it applies to what you just added.  I get it whenever I add something and if I say "no", they won't add what I want.

I hasten to say I do not add willy-nilly but something needed.

Jack, this is the other Shirley - shirleyn.  My computer, with Wind. 10, is new to me.  I had downloaded Avast right away, not knowing anything about Defender.  So, now I have deleted it, but can't get Defender back on.  It says, to turn it on, go there & then there are further directions.  But when I go there, I get the notice that it has been turned off.  What shall I do now?

From http://www.howtogeek.com/225385/what%E2%80%99s-the-best-antivirus-for-windows-10-is-windows-defender-good-enough/

"Windows Defender will automatically disable itself when you install a third-party antivirus, and then re-enable itself again if you ever uninstall that third-party antivirus. It’s designed to get out of the way."

The above site might make interesting reading for some.

shirleyn   -   Might this help?

Be sure Avast is fully removed. Windows Defender should come on by itself when Avast is fully gone. Don't be afraid to do a restart between or after adding/removing items

Oh dear, I don't know how to start the computer in safe mode, which is what that uninstall place said to do.

jackwv

Shirleyn   open defender, click on settings on upper right then click on windows defender if not already on.  Turn on the three buttons  there is then a notation at the bottom to go to Defender.

I don't have Win-10 so can't give detail, but this is from Microsoft. Maybe Jack or another Win-10 user can jump in here and help.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Everyone should be aware of how to start in Safe Mode. It's usually needed when there's a problem - at a time when it's not handy to learn.

Rick. good link, hope it is what shirleyn needs.   It is so long ago that I used safe mode that I forgot all about it, or why I used it, was probably told to do so by Microsoft.  Read your link and will keep it in mind in future.

I found that I have free McAfee for 17 more days - it came with the program.  Would that be what is keeping Depender from turning itself on?

Rick now that is the type of answer we all understand

I have had both Norton and McAfee free in the past, years back.  On several occasions when contacted with a problem they wanted paid to correct.

Shirleyn  will look for Rick to comment but believe you can simply remove McAfee and believe I would not wait to do so.

shirleyn

Aha, it is done and Defender showed up like magic.  Thanks to both Jack & Rick.  You guys are just too much.    :-*
I didn't get to do that 2nd trick with Avant - should I do so?

jackwv

Shirleyn great, now if you have not done so, open defender.  It will give you the last date the definitions were updated and also when last scanned.   No problem if you just go to the Update button and if not the last day or so click on the update definitions, it only takes a few minutes at most.   If the scan is not up to date run a quick scan that may take 15 minutes.  (a full scan would take hours and I never run)

shirleyn

Jack, thanks.  Yes, I did all that - opened Defender & ran a quick scan.  Thanks again for all the help.

Rick, I printed the instructions on how to do the Safe Mode.  Will practice that when I have more time.  Been gone all afternoon & am too beat up right now to learn something new.  ::)
And thank you for all your help.

shirleyn.
