Jeanne, "America's Got Talent" is on ABC -  Tuesdays from 7:00 - 9:00 CDT.  Darcy won't be on again for two weeks.  Another semi-final round is next week.
She is amazing.  In addition to being a great ventriloquist, she has a sassy sense of humor and wonderful singing voice After a humorous conversation - usually directed at one of the judges -the puppets always break into song.
And she's only 13!!!!

Marilyne

That sounds good . . . I'm also going to watch "America's Got Talent"!

The ones who made it to the Finals this week are all good performers - no "shrieking" singers.  I predict the comedian will win because the Grand Prize is a gig in Las Vegas and he fits that kind of performing.
As good as Darcy is,  I can't see her performing in Las Vegas.....at least for a few years.

Lindancer

Callie, I saw the list in the paper yesterday, but not one I ever heard of was on it except for Drew Scott, from HGTV.

Marilyne

Gloria de & Callie - I just now looked at the list of stars, and besides Drew Scott, the only name I recognize is Debbie Gibson.  She was a popular young singer in the 1980's, when my daughter was in high school.  The only reason I remember her, is because lots of people thought that she and my daughter looked alike. For that reason, I'm curious to see what she looks like now??  If there is still a resemblance??  Other than Debbie & Drew, the other names are meaningless to me . . . never heard of any of them.

CallieOK

Gloria de and Marilyne,  that's o.k.  I can wait.

For those thinking about watching "America's Got Talent" - be aware that the emcee, Tara Banks, is majorly annoying.  I keep my remote handy.  ;)
Darcy will not appear again for two weeks.  Next week's show is the second round of the semi-finals.

Finally watched "Hidden Figures" on HBO Go.  Really enjoyed it.  There are two more movies on HBO that I want to watch ---- "Jackie" and "La La Land".  My daughter watched both.  She found "Jackie" sad.

CallieOK

Although I saw "La La Land" in a movie theater,  I recorded it on Sunday in case I forget to watch on Thursday night.  Also set to record "Hidden Figures".

Re:  earlier posts..... The Finals of "America's Got Talent" are tonight (7:00 CDT) on ABC.   Darcie Lynn, the 13- year-old Oklahoma ventriloquist, will be performing.  Two other "kids" are also in the Finals.
I can't see any of them doing a show in Las Vegas (one of the prizes) so am betting the winner will either be the comedian or the dance group that uses Day-Glo flashes of light on their costumes (I'm sure that isn't what it's called - but that's the best description I can come up with  :uglystupid2:  ;) ).
Winner will be announced tomorrow night.

Did anyone watch the premiere of DWTS last night?   Not sure I like only one judge commenting on the dancers.  Mark Ballast (sp?) is back.   Interesting to have Max and Peta (married) dancing with a "star" married  couple (can't remember their names)  I think Max and the other wife are better than Peta/other husband.

Sandy

I just watched "Hidden Figures"
(The story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.)  and it was Awesome!

CallieOK

I surely was mistaken about "America's Got Talent"!!1  It came down to the two youngest performers and........ TA DA.....our Oklahoma ventriloquist took the prize!!!!
I will admit that, after seeing her performance tonight with a long-time Vegas ventriloquist,  I think she can hold her own in a show there.

Marilyne

Callie - I recorded "America's Got Talent", but haven't watched it yet. I'm anxious to see the twelve year old ventriloquist.

I did watch DWTS, and I do think it's going to be a good season! I'm not a big fan of "The Property Brothers", but both Drew and Jonathan have cute and funny personalities. I think Drew will be a good candidate.  The older woman from "Shark Tank", seems interesting.  I've heard of her, but have never watched that show?  The guy from "Hamilton" was good, and will probably be a finalist.

The only other one that I'm familiar with is Debbie Gibson.  When my youngest daughter was in high school, Debbie was at the peak of her popularity.  Everyone used to tell Sandy, (my dau), that she "looked just like Debbie Gibson".  Naturally I was curious to get a good look at her.  Still a definite resemblance  . . . the same nose, blond hair and body size.   I do think that the Lyme disease, has taken a toll on Debbie. She didn't look healthy.

Anyway,  I think I'll definitely be following the show this season.

Lindancer

Marilyn, Watched DWTS I have seen every show since the beginning. I think last year was one of my favorites. Drew is the only one I recognized. So far I do not have a favorite.

Marilyne,  I thought the AGT Finale was a good show.   The finalists performed with the guest stars - very entertaining.  Watch for a surprise guest from DWTS.    (Still found Tyra Banks annoying, however)

SCFSue

I'm watching the PBS series on the Vietnam War.  My late husband was the Ordnance Officer on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga out of San Diego (where I lived with our 3 children during his 2 years of duty in the South China Sea--off shore of Saigon and other areas of Vietnam).  What a terrible war that was and it didn't end well for the allies.

The Ticonderoga, like all the other carriers out there, had to stand down for maintenance in the Philippines for maintenance of about 3 weeks.  I was able to fly out and meet him there (along with his C.O.'s wife) and travel a week and a half  in the Philippines and then another 5 days in Hong Kong and Kowloon.  An Army wife whose husband was in Vietnam  stayed with my children.  She was a friend at my church in San Diego.

It was a tough two years for us and him, too.

SCFSue - We watched the first episode of The Vietnam War, last night, and the second episode tonight.  What an excellent documentary it is!  I'm enjoying it so much, and learning so much that I didn't know, or didn't remember.  I can't believe I was a married woman with two children in the early 1960's, and yet I was pretty much clueless, as to what was going over there, and why it was happening. I'm so glad this documentary has been produced by Ken Burns.  He does such a thorough job of researching hs subject, and presenting the facts.

It certainly was a tough time for you, with your husband over there for two years, and you here with three children.  I can imagine that the military wives gave each other a lot of help and support.  My husband was drafted into the Army after college, and just a few months after we got married. It was an easy two years for us, because he was in the 72nd Army Band, so we spent the two years in Washington and California.

We will watch the third episode of The Vietnam War tomorrow night, and the other two over the weekend.

SCFSue

Marilyne, my husband attended the U. of South Carolina on a U.S. Navy scholarship--and had to serve in the Navy for at least 8-10 years to pay back the Navy for his scholarship, text books, uniforms, etc.  We married the day after we both graduated from Carolina.  We had saved $200 and bought a 1938 Dodge Coupe which had good tires.  We got into our car after our wedding at my Aunt and Uncle's home.  We drove through South Carolina and stopped overnight someplace in North Carolina.  On Sunday a.m. we drove into Norfolk, VA, found an apartment (which cost our remaining savings for one month's rent).  On Monday a.m.  he went down to the Naval Base in Norfolk, called me on the telephone and told me to bring his uniforms down.  The ship he was stationed on had to go out to see by 10:00 and wouldn't be back until Friday.  As the most junior officer aboard, he had the overnight duty on Saturday and didn't come home until Sunday morning after the Sunday crew checked in.

It was a tough start, but we both loved Navy life and he stayed in until he retired after 20 years of active duty.  Our 2 oldest were born during 2 of his deployments--one to Iceland and the other Newfoundland.  He didn't see either until they were about 6 months old.  Our youngest was born at Ft. Ord Army hospital in California.  He was attending the Naval Post-Graduate school for his Master's degree.  When he received that late in 1966, we moved to San Diego where he was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Ticonderoga--and it soon after deployed to the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam for 2 years.

So far in the PBS special, there is not much about the crews on the aircraft carriers who prepared the bombs and kept the fighter planes in readiness to fly into Vietnam.  He was in charge of the crews who got the bombs up  to the flight deck and onto the planes which had to drop them in Vietnam.  It was a terrible war and many did not come back--and those who did will probably never be the same, especially if they were captured by the North Vietnamese.

SCFSue - The second half of The Vietnam War, series started tonight.  We recorded it, and will start watching it on Tuesday.  The first half was excellent, I thought.  I had forgotten so much, but it's all coming back to me now.  I'm interested in see more about the POW's this week.  I remember when they came home, and walked off the plane, one by one.  A very emotional scene, that Im sure will be shown on the final episode this week.

SCFSue

It was a terrible, senseless war as far as America was concerned--and far too many of our young service people were either maimed for life or killed.  It was a very sad time for America--and although I disliked all the protesting as my husband was out there (1967-69), I could understand the reluctance of many to go.

I am watching each program and thinking I'll soon see a Naval officer we knew.  So far, mostly Army personnel who were on the ground there.  Very, very sad!

I am sure he is doing a good job putting that together. (smart man) . Enjoyed some of his others.  Not going to watch the one though. I never did understand that war. Why was it started. US as far as I know no interest there. I had not lived in US here long when it started. I thought  that it was under the French Flag.  Then they decided to just up and leave and next you see US moving in.  What would we have gotten from owning it had the US won.  If France thought no point in staying must not have had any prospect.
43000 Men lost in it. No war was declared Country to Country. and so the young men came back home like they should be ashamed . Treated awful. Many Viet people came over here . Same to be good works and never see any  problems with them. They stick to themselves and work hard.   Their country seem to be doing O.K running themselves.  I think that many men who were there are not finding this TV Program to their liking.

I'm feeling bad that Debbie Gibson, got eliminated last night on DWTS.  I thought she was a good dancer, but the judges gave her low scores, and she likely didn't get many viewer votes. Probably nobody else remembers her from the 1980's?   The other elimination, Barbara, was not a good dancer.  She was obviously the requisite senior citizen for this season.  Usually they keep the seniors on for at least two weeks, but not this time.

Is it just my imagination, or are there more dancers this season than in the past?  Not sure who I'll be rooting for?  I like Drew Scott, and the violinist.  Can't remember her name?  Nobody else has grabbed my attention yet.

Well, I bit the bullet so to speak, but unfortunately, it bit back. Everyone is probably well aware and familiar with my not having had a television since 1997. That television was a 19" color TV by Magnavox that took two people to move. I had in the past tried free trials of Hulu and of Netflix but didn't even watch more than one show so nixed those ideas.

Anyway, a woman had recently moved her disabled mother into a third-floor apartment only to have her mother fall ill and she had to move her to a nursing home where the mother died suddenly. To make a long story short, the daughter had one month to vacate her mother's apartment so as to not incur additional fees. So all furniture and accessories were priced to move quickly. I went with others to "just look."

I purchased the smaller of three TVs and a small television stand for eighty bucks and was assured by one of the security people that it worked great. I was surprised at how light it was and there was only a screen, remote and of course the rolling stand. I did wonder why someone would need THREE TVs in a one bedroom apartment. But I have three Kindles and two computers so have no room to judge.

Back to the bite back; I got it home, plugged it in, tried the remote and got an onscreen message that says no signal! It turns out and everyone thought I already knew, that you need to go out and buy a box that unscrambles the signal! Who knew? Before, I just plugged it in. So now, anyone have any advice for me?

Find out from your building what cable company supplies your building, call them, and set up an account.  Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to get anything without a cable hookup - so no "free" TV anymore.

Thanks for the help, Maryz. There are three separate companies you may use here.

Good luck, angelface.  I've been using Comcast for the two years I've lived here (also in a retirement facility).  It wouldn't have been my first choice, but I must say I have had no complaints in that time - a few glitches, but nothing that wouldn't be expected from any company.  It's basically a crap shoot.   ;)

We have three, Alaska Communications, GCI which is an Alaskan part of AT&T or Verizon I believe. There are also two dish companies and an antenna you can buy that gives you about 30 channels. A far cry from when you just plugged it in and were good. I'll have to wait until next week.

Now, since I haven't seen television since 1997, what's good? I don't like blood, gore or violence and I don't like reality shows or dumb sitcoms, part of the reason for the earlier tv giveaway.  I remember my dad who died in 1995, had A&E which I liked and the History channel. Marilyn, from here told me about a house and cooking channel that she likes. HGTV or something similar. I really am a newbie to all of this.

Marilyne

Patricia - you need to get hooked up to the cable ASAP.  Ask your neighbors what cable service is available to the residents there.   Most cable companies have live people on duty, 24/7.  They will answer any questions that you have.  Likely they won't come out to hook you up until next week, but you can get all the information before then.

You said you haven't had a TV since 1997?  So much has changed since then in the way of programming!  It will take you a while to sort through all the selections that you will now have.  We are here to help you, if we possibly can! :)

Marilyne, I just listed what we have here in my previous post other than a satellite company which like the two dish companies will not work on this multi-unit building. I'm going to call the remaining companies tomorrow. I do not know if my internet company also supplies cable. I know they don't have phones.

The last time I watched TV was a month after American Idol began. No, that show came much later. I remember all the shows had more reruns than new shows and it was also the year I believe Survivor and all those cop shows began.  Other than all the reruns, I don't really recall. I have seen some television at people's houses or on Youtube.

I do have a Roku that I received for signing up with my internet company. It is said to be able to connect to your TV to show your computer screen on the TV's flat screen. I do have that still in the box and it has instructions!

This is all new to me. I come from the era of "Bad boys, what ya gonna do," from Cops to 2017 so this may take me a bit. It's a good thing I no longer have to get up and go to work! I do and I will appreciate any and all help and pointers!

maryz

Patricia - there is so much available out there, you'll be overwhelmed at first. IMO, a lot of it is not worth watch.  Personally, I like the police procedurals (NCIS, etc.), but not too much blood and gore. ;D  I don't like the "reality" shows. You'll probably find a lot on your PBS station - some great programming there.  If the system you choose has On Demand, there is a lot available there, too.  I have a Roku box.  Through that, I find some great movies and original series on Netflix.  I also have access to Amazon Prime (through a daughter's account), and there is some good stuff there, too.  You really just have to browse.  Personally, I find it easier to browse on the computer (laptop, handheld - whatever you choose), than on the TV.  It's going to be quite a learning experience for you.  ;)

A&E is not what it once was!  Nor is the History Channel.  History has some good programs.  National Geographic has, sporadically, some good shows.  PBS is always a winner.
