Bubble, I'm not sure about the right terms, but Halloween is the day before All Hallow's Eve (All Saints Day?), a religious holiday in some churches here (November 1).  I am not Roman Catholic, so perhaps someone who is Catholic can fill you in with more details.

Lots of whitecaps on Lake Michigan and it looks sooo coolld!  The water temp has dropped three degrees - 61 to 58.

Mary Ann

so_P_bubble

Mary Ann, I know all about All Saints Day: I was educated in a school in a RC convent.  I was asking more about nowadays content of the holiday.

SCFSue

I'm not a Catholic, (am a Presbyterian).  My church has a candlelight service in the evening of All Saints Day.  Those who wish to light a candle in remembrance of friends and family who are no longer with us.  We usually sing the Hymn, "For All the Saints", during the short service preceding the candle ceremony.  It's a nice way to remember those who have died.

Sue

MarsGal

That sounds nice Sue. I do not remember our church (also Presbyterian) doing that, but it has been a long, long time since I went there.

CallieOK

Quite a few of the churches in my town (OKC area), including my Presbyterian church, have "Trunk or Treat" in their parking lots.   Members give out Treats from the open and decorated trunks (boots?) of their cars.  The "treaters" also wear costumes.  Very popular activity.

halkel

Callie, my church also has the trunk or"j treat.  When I was a kid our school always had lots of activities, including best boy and girl. Costume.  Of course you had to make you own,   All we could buy were mask.

CallieOK

Hal,  My sons' elementary school in Colorado always had a parade through the classrooms on Halloween.  I think #2 son was in 4th grade when he decided to go as Granny Clampett from "The Beverly Hillbillies".
Hee wore one of my shirtwaist dresses tucked up around a belt, a "grandma" wig, fake glasses and his hiking boots....and had a bubble-blowing pipe clenched in his teeth.
I threaten him with posting that picture for a Facebook "Throw Back Thursday" when he gets sassy about OSU/OU football.   ;D

Good afternoon, on a so far bright, sunny, albeit wet Interior with yet another weather alert for continuing freezing rain this afternoon through Monday. There have already been several fender benders and two slide, hits and runs out there, with only one broken arm so far.

Larry, we had winter, and now it is back to fall. The cash register that man is using sounds a bit inconvenient for business, even one in a throwback setting. Is there sales tax involved? I hope your son and granddaughter have a good trip and can get what they can sorted out.  Will they be able to see the grands if they are in the area?

The Episcopal church celebrates All Saint's Day altho I don't know if the lower Episcopal services do. They don't have Halloween in the parking lot; however, there are school events, department stores and malls have trick or treat activities for kids, and there are various community events.

Here, in town,  it seems to be more of an adult party time. Many places of employment also have costumes and prizes for their employees. You also have the usual door to door, but that is being discouraged by city officials and schools.

My friend on the North Island, New Zealand says no celebrating there, but she lives on a farm, (pop. 650 sheep town). She says she was an adult before hearing about celebrating Halloween. My friend in Melbourne, Australia says the first-ever Halloween costume shop opened this month there, but it is not known if you're not familiar with the Internet. So, it seems to be a US holiday. I wonder about Canada or England?

MarsGal, Shan sounds wonderful! I love new baby kitties and puppies! I just wish this place allowed a second pet as it would be great for Farrah as well as me.

Mary Ann

I think our church young people are doing something in the neighborhood for Halloween, but I don't know what.  I don't pay attention when I can't join in.  The first Sunday in November we will honor and remember people who have passed away this past year.

We had a long day today.  I mentioned going to a funeral in Grand Haven today, which I did.  Tom went to the park at Lake Michigan while I was at the funeral.  I met my friends and we went into the church together.  It was a nice funeral for a nice lady.  Afterward there was a luncheon which we attended.  A woman who sat with us was the daughter of our friend's sister.  I knew there was friction in the family and the daughter told us that it was resolved the night before her mother died.  I knew the mother since the family lived near where I lived.  We saw a lot of pictures of people who we knew.

After we finished eating and talking, I called Tom who came after me and we drove to Holland to James'.  It was a rainy day with some letup but not much.  The rain was not heavy so it didn't bother.  The ride from Grand Haven south to Holland was on Lakeshore Drive and very scenic.  Lots of trees, some color, no sun, but pretty anyway.  Oh, when in Grand Haven yet, we drove around the Oval next to the lake and the whitecaps were many and huge.

Alicia and the twins were not home when we got there, so we could talk with Jamie.  After she got home, both Tom and I held the twins and I have to say they have the cutest smiles.  They cried a bit because they needed changing and they were hungry, but they settled down.  Jo was playing with a button on my sweater but she didn't try to eat it.  Ellie went after the button too.  For Jo, I had to put my necklace under my blouse or we'd have had beads all over the place.  We left about 3 pm and both took naps when we got home.  I think we're going to Russ' for supper.

Good afternoon, on this in and out day.  To morrow, we are suppose to have very bad weather rain and 50mi. wind.

Did anyone miss me. I am just home from a 5 day stay in the hospital. I had CHF, renal failure and my blood count was down to 5, I had to sign for a transfusion, but before they did that it came up to 8. I am staying very tired and my breathing is worse.  I am on the oxygen more.  Other wise I feel fine and did miss you all.

Bubble thank you for the Halloween graphics. They have a Halloween parade in town, which ends up at the movie    theater, where they have another program for the children.

It is now 7:40 I Will have to end this as I started it about 1

In our church they give a rose to everyone who lost a love one that year.   after all these years I still have my dried roses for my sons

Mary Ann

Gloria, I'm so sorry to read that you were in the hospital again.  Of course we missed you but when we don't hear from someone, it often is because the person is busy and can't take the time to post anything.  Those things that put you in the hospital are serious and good reasons to be there.  Be careful, Gloria.

I forgot when I mentioned my activities today that we had splats of snow on the way to Grand Haven.  I doubt our temperature went over 40 degrees all day and that is what it is now.  The weather is "raw" but radar looks as if it will be clearer tomorrow but Monday and Tuesday will bring more rain.  There is snow in the UP of Michigan.  I've often said if I can get through November and December, I can take what January, February and March have to offer.

It's too early to go to bed because I'd wake up too early, but I think the cat and I will go to our respective beds earlier than usual tonight.

Hi Everyone.  I usually don't post in the evening but decided to change things a bit so I won't be rushed  in the morning as we plan on going to Sunday School and Church and then out to lunch.  Pat and her sister have been playing a lot of Farkle and Shanghai Rummy.  They both enjoy playing games.  We are staying in touch with Scott and Jennifer via texts and they are now in Pennsylvania maybe are three or four hours away from where they are going.  The weather is looking very unpleasant up in New York for tomorrow and Monday with high winds and a lot of rain.  They plan to head back home Monday afternoon unless something unexpected happens.  They got on the road a little after 9 am this morning rather than several hours earlier as there was a hitch in some of their plans.  I will be taking care of the dog and cat for a couple of days and tomorrow will be able to do that after Church.

Sue and MarsGal, we were Presbyterians for about 30 years and I don't remember us having a special service for All Saints Day.  However, I may have just forgotten.

Callie, our Church also does the Trunk or Treat and think that was being done tonight.  It is done in connection with the Halloween Festival downtown so there are lots of children and it is a big effort. I bet that is a cute picture and would like to see it.  I won't tell him if you show it to us.

Hal, I remember my grandmother always made candied apples for Halloween or popcorn balls.  We would go treat or treating in the very small town near our farm and there was certainly no concern as to safety as we knew everyone whose home we visited.

Patricia, glad you are back to fall weather up your way.  I think it is wise to discourage house to house treat or treating these days.  However, I have observed that parents or an adult are always close at hand and always glad to see that.

Mary Ann, our Church as well as the one we did attend before moving, always had a remembrance of those who had passed in the previous year.  Isn't it sad that the conflict in that family couldn't have been obtained before the end of life for your friend.

deAngel, I did miss you and glad to see you are back home.  It sounds like you certainly needed to be in the hospital.  Is your nephew still with you?  That is a nice remembrance with a rose.

Sandy

Welcome Back, Gloria!

I am so glad to see that you are posting again.
It is so hard being hospitalized,  I know that you
must be glad to be home.     I hope that you have
someone to help care for you.

Sorry to hear you were in the hospital, Gloria.  Will be saying a prayer for you.

Marilyne

Gloria de - Yes, I did notice that you hadn't posted a message in a number of days.  I'm so sorry that you were back in the hospital, and hope that you'll be feeling better every day! I'll bet that Taffy was happy to see you! :)  Is your nephew still there?  I hope he is, so he can help you while you're recuperating.

Oh gosh, Gloria, the last few days couldn't have been much fun for you. I am so glad you are back home and recuperating.

Your weather report sounds like the weather alert I woke up to this morning. We had lots of wind yesterday afternoon, but none right now. I am not sure we got any rain overnight, but we are expecting more today along with the wind.

Lindancer

Good afternoon, thank all you beautiful people for your kind thoughts. Yes my nephew is still here and plans to stay a little longer,  they only let me come home, as I had someone here.

About our weather, does not sound very nice, now they are saying70mi. gust, and possible power outages.  I guess it is going to be and old fashion Nor'easter.

MaryAnn and FlaJean, you were talking about carbon  copies the other day, I use to have to use 8copies, as I typed up the OR schedule for the next day, and there could not be even one mistake.

Shirley, my oxygen level was down to 73 when I was admitted to  the hospital, they want 99 she said otherwise you can start brain damage

FlJean, I enjoy seeing your pictures from Niceville. 30 years ago the beach was beautiful very little building over there then.  That was before the bridge was built. I wish I could get down there one more time, as my son is buried right outside the AF base.

Gloria, I am so glad to hear from you and saddened that you had to go back to the hospital! I'm also glad to hear your nephew, (And Tabby!); are there for you.

I hope you are doing better and that your oxygens levels stay up. Stay inside next to Tabby during the Nor'easter!

Lindancer

Patricia, thanks for you thoughts also.  Yes Taffy is really hanging on to me In fact she stays right in front of the walker, as she is not use to me using it.

I THINK MY GET UP AND GO IS GONE :knuppel2: :)

Lindancer, sorry to hear you have been in hospital but it is good you have someone there with you at present.    Am sure you will find that GET UP AND GO!

angelface555

OOOOPS, I apologize for getting her name wrong! Something was nagging me when I posted it, I should have listened!

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  Just checking in tonight and will do a regular posting tomorrow morning.  All is well here and Scott and Jennifer made it safely to New York with a 16 hour drive.

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  We have a beautiful and crisp fall day here in South Carolina.  According to the weather report on my weather app it was 31 degrees at 8 am but will get into the mid to high 60's by late afternoon.

Yesterday Pat's foot was so swollen she couldn't get her shoe on and her back was not feeling well so she passed on going to Sunday School and Church with us.  However, her sister and I attended and then went through the drive-thru at Wifesaver's and got great chicken dinners to bring home for our main meal of the day.  The only thing on my schedule for today is to see the foot doctor at 1:45 pm to have him check my toes.  I think they are doing well and appear to no longer be seeping.  I hope this will be the last time I need to be checked on this procedure.  We are awaiting word on how the court case our granddaughter went to New York to attend turns out.  If she wins custody of her daughter they may be delayed in leaving to come back home but if not they will head back right after court.  Fortunately they had all day yesterday to rest up after the 16 hour trip.  Our granddaughter drove the entire way as our son apparently has narcolepsy and falls asleep.  I expect she will also drive all the way back.

MarsGal, I hope the rain and wind didn't cause any problems in your area.

deAngel, ample proof that you were missed by all of the comments above.  I was happy to read that your nephew was still there with you  and will be there a little longer.  I hope you didn't lose power last night.  Do you have a little oxygen device to put on your finger top keep taps on your oxygen level?  My smart phone has an app that will measure that for me.  When I did the overnight test with the device it showed my oxygen had gone to down to 69 for about 7 minutes.  Maybe that explains why I sometimes can't say the word I am thinking or can't recall something quickly like I used to be able to do.  The lung doctor has ordered the oxygen input device for my CPAP machine but still waiting for insurance approval.  Perhaps this week I will hear and get it set up.  All my night stand needs is another piece of equipment.  :)  At least your nephew was there to spend time with Taffy and care for her while you were in the hospital.

Mary Ann

Go to the Birthday and Holiday folder to see the ghosts that Bubble has pictured.  She is so clever!  (I forgot to copy the link and did not want to go back again to get it).

Mary Ann

so_P_bubble

I did not have any of you Mary Ann :) so you were not 'ghosted'

Lindancer

Just a little pass none, Nurse just left and I have to set with my foot up, as it is more swollen then it was the last time she measured it.. Oh! I wish I was 80 again, then I could do everything.  The wind it still blowing, they say a few gust got to 74mi. per. We only lost power for a little while. This morning 40,000 were without power here, a lot of poles went down on Sound Ave. and one other street is closed as wires are down.  We have a substation  on our corner and I think we get back on faster.

Larry, I do have a meter that I have to put on my finger and check it.

Yes, MaryAnn, I like checking out all the graphics that Bubble is making for us. Glad you got to see the twins. I guess they are growing fast. The pictures you put in here a while back were so cute.

Bubble, I knew why I was not included; the last avatar of me was in Senior Net and was a picture taken in 2008.  I see pictures of me come up in the Random Images occasionally, always with Norm, Dot and someone else.  So, think nothing of it.

Saturday, after the funeral in Grand Haven, Tom and I drove to the Oval (the park at the lake) and the whitecaps looked just like they look today.

Brrrr is right!

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I've never had a photo of myself on S&F, although I have had images of other things and other people.  I didn't have one on Senior Net either.  I do have one on Facebook, that I try to update every year.

Today, October 30th, would have been my brother's 80th birthday. The memorial service/celebration of life, for him has still not been scheduled because of the recent fires.  Their house did not burn, but my sister-in-law was evacuated for a number of days.  I think I mentioned that she lives only about 8 to 10 miles from Santa Rosa.  I also have lots of cousins and nephews and nieces there, and most were evacuated, although all houses are okay.  So of course it was the wrong time to schedule any kind of service or event.  I hope it will be soon.
