MaryAnn, times have certainly changed now. I remember when my mom had gone for a physical in the mid-sixties, at a clinic we had used for several years. She fell asleep waiting for the doctor in one of those paper gowns and awoke to darkness. Everything was locked for the evening and she had to use the office phone to call my dad who called the police.

The upshot was after many apologies, she received totally free medical care for life from both the doctor and the clinic.

Marilyne

Patricia - The second time I was left in the room, I think I just missed being locked in!  It was on a Friday, and my appointment had been rather late in the day, around 3:00, I think, so everyone had left.  When I walked out and into the lobby/wait room, I could see that the last two members of the staff were all ready to go, with their purses over their shoulders, etc. If I had been locked in somehow, I had my cell phone, and of course the office phone, so I probably would have called the non-emergency police number, to inform them of my dilemma.  I don't think it would have been worthy of dialing 911.  Around here, if you dial 911, its a major event, with paramedics, police cars, sirens, and sometimes even a fire engine! LOL

Sandy

Good Afternoon,  Everyone...

When I go to an appointment,
I insist that they leave the doors
open.       Yes,  I am a wee bot

That makes it worth getting left behind!!!!   lol

Mary Ann

Patricia, you're right about how things have changed.  I'm sure if what your mother experienced then happened today, she never would have received lifetime care from either the doctor or the clinic.

Fortunately, I have not been close to being locked in.  Maybe it's because I try to schedule my appointments in the morning.

I learned how to use an electric cart today.  Tom and I went to Lowe's to look at buying blinds for both of our bedrooms.  They didn't have any wheelchairs and suggested the cart.  I was able to handle it better than I thought I would, but I still would prefer a wheelchair with someone pushing me.  Anyway, we made our purchases and Tom will begin the installations soon.  I told him to do his first.  He ended up with a honeycomb blind like I am replacing.  His is room darkening and mine was not.  I bought a vertical blind for my room.  The vertical blinds come in 84" length and they have a machine to cut them to the desired length.  He had to cut a bit off the honeycomb blind, but from a side.  Technology has advanced in the past years.

Marilyne and MaryAnn, my mother's appointment was also late in the afternoon, and I remember being surprised that no one went around and checked the exam rooms? Of course, this was before cell phones, and as my Dad was head of the city public works, I doubt if he would have dialed 911 even if we even had that system back then.

I remember many people thinking the clinic got off easy but you would not believe that today.

In 2000, after I fell off a kitchen ladder and broke two bones in the side of my foot, I had to use a cart in the grocery store. I was absolutely terrible at it with my vision problems. After twice almost knocking displays over while trying to turn, I simply maneuvered by always going one way. 🤞

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  It is going to be another moderate day temperature wise with no rain.  I will be going to Sunday School shortly as it is my day to give the devotional.  Then I will come home and pick up Pat and we will go to Church and then out to eat somewhere.  I think this will be the first time Pat has been out of the house for a week.  I plan to watch the end of the golf tournament later this afternoon.  We did not go out to eat yesterday as we had planned as neither of us really felt up to it.

Marilyne, I didn't have anything else pressing to do and the first time I saw him there wasn't the long delay.  I always think that sometime it might be me needing extra attention so am patient with the doctors.  It is tiring however to just sit in the exam room and wait.  Fortunately there was a comfortable chair so I didn't have to stay on the exam table.  Wow, to have back to back time when the doctor and staff just forgot you is something.  I would have sought a different doctor as well.  I am surprised they wouldn't check the rooms before leaving.

Patricia, what a terrible experience your mother had at the doctor's office.  It sounds like they tried to make it up to her with the free care.  I have clipped the end of displays when they have not left enough room for the carts to turn.  Some of the electric carts take a lot of room to turn.

Sandy, that is a good idea to ask to have the door left open.  For most of my appointments privacy is not an issue so would welcome having the door left open.

Mary Ann, I am a pretty laid back and patient person but have inquired if the doctor is actually in the office or have they forgotten me at times.  I was suppose to have had the first appointment of the day but obviously there were several others who also had that appointment.  You will soon become use to using the electric cart and for me it is almost a must at Lowe's or Walmart unless what I want is right at the front of the store.

Jean, what an achievement to be married for 62 years.

Mary Ann

Larry, I got along fine with the electric cart and I know with practice, I would improve.  I don't have that many occasions to go into stores now since we do our grocery shopping online and Tom picks it up, also he likes to shop Amazon, using James' Prime account, and that is online.

I am watching the PGA Golf Tournament.  I just turned it on and haven't seen a Leaderboard yet.  I just saw a short one but I am wearing the wrong glasses and it wasn't up long enough to read.  There's plenty of time.

Dot and I did our usual Sunday thing today and tried to solve the world's problems.  We had our usual, too, Tuna Melt and cream pie.  The pie is always cream but different varieties.  She drove in to our complex just after Tom, so he and I got home at the same time today.

After I changed clothes (it's hot and my a/c just went on), I sat in the living room with the cat and I fell asleep sitting on the couch.  I don't know how long I had been sleeping, but I woke up when I was getting poked in the arm.  I opened my eye and was nose to nose with Kendrick.  He laid down on a pad I have for him and was content to have me pet him.  Eventually, I got up and I think he may still be there.

Patricia, I figured out backing up and fortunately, there were few customers in the aisle we were in.  I don't have eyes in the back of my head so I just kept going forward and turned into a wide aisle to get to another wide aisle and to the checkout.  I was able to leave the cart at the checkout because I could walk from there to the car.

One of the golfers is Bronson Burgoon which I think is an unusual name, especially the combination of the two names.

Nothing going on here today.  I hope to translate a few cymbidiums and an avocado seedling, into larger containers, but that will likely to be all that I accomplish today. (If I even do that much!)

I'm having fun, fussing around my new wild "pet" . . . a very tiny cottontail rabbit.  We've had rabbits in our front yard (junipers) for a number of years now, but recently I've only seen this one little guy, who has started coming through the slats in the fence, and into our back yard.  I looked online to see what is best to feed a wild rabbit, and I'm following the guidelines.  He will often come to the glass slider in our living room, and look in at us, while we're sitting there watching TV in the early evening before dark.  I found out that rabbits are not nocturnal, but only come out in in the evening and again in the early morning.

Guess I had better get to my planting duties, so will check back here later.

Marilyne,  The Queen Mary is on the New York Harbor web cam right now.  Leaving for Southhampton.

http://www.nyharborwebcam.com/

Marilyne

Callie - So glad I checked back to correct something on my last post!  I saw your message, and then was able to click on the cam, and see the whole cruise through the harbor.  What a spectacular ship that is!  The harbor cam is the best of all the cams I have on my desktop.  I love the way it changes position, zooms in for those great closeup's, and then out again to take in the entire ship. I enjoyed every minute!

Lindancer

Thanks Callie, enjoyed the trip.  I also  like watching Time Sq,different times of the day I have ate in that McDon. many times

Marilyne,  so glad you caught the ship. Did you see it go by the statue of liberty?  That cam doesn't always stream but it does  follow the cruise ships from the time they get near the wide part of the harbor until they go under the bridge.  Usually between 4 and 5 p.m. New York time.

Lindancer,  I like the Times Square cam, too.   My granddaughter works  within walking distance but she avoids Times Square unless there's absolutely no alternative. I'm glad she isn't one of those Disney characters trying to get people to pay them to pose for a picture.

Mary Ann

We had a good storm last night and there are a lot of power outages.  We have power but Plainfield avenue, just up the hill from us, does not.  I saw where 19000+ were out in the county.  We're a fair sized county so the outages are spread all over.  I heard it rain and thunder, saw some lightning.  I think the storm lasted most of the night.  You'd laugh at my deck.  Neither Tom nor I expected wind last night and we didn't batten down the hatches as we should have.  The cover stayed on the love seat and one chair.  The cover for the table ended up in my amaryllis bulbs and one chair cover came off entirely and the back cushion is on the floor.  Nothing was damaged, but we'll know another time to use the straps that fasten to the legs.

Other than that, it's Monday morning and I'm not awake yet.  I'll be back later and I hope I'll know more.

Mary Ann

Hi Everyone. It is a bright and sunny morning and no rain in the forecast.  We expect to get into the low 90's this afternoon.  As usual on a Monday morning I don't feel very peppy and didn't get up until after 8 am, which is really late for me.  However, there is nothing pressing today and so will just take things easy and rest.  The tech will be here sometime after 11 this morning to check out my oxygen concentrator, which takes about 10 minutes.  I have no plans to go anywhere today.

We had a very nice Church service yesterday.  Our Church is having a three day adult Bible Sschool conducted by a retired minister named Ed Killbourne, who is a wonderful story teller and song writer.  He did the adult Bible School about this time last year with around 40 adults in attendance and it was really enjoyed so he was book to come back this year.  I elected not to attend as going for a three hour session three days in a row is just too much for me anymore.  Yesterday he did the children's time and then preached the sermon and then did a special concert last night.

Mary Ann, our ways of shopping are certainly changing quickly and it does make the jobs much easier.  The golf tournament really didn't get close yesterday afternoon although the lead was cut down to two strokes for a few holes before going back up to 4.  I think Bryson DeChambeau is indeed someone to watch out for in the years ahead.  This was his third tournament championship this season and two more weeks to go before the Fed Ex Cup.  It sounds like Kendrick thought you had napped long enough and it was time to give a little attention.  I sometimes will go around an aisle in the electric cart to avoid having to back up.  I have found that the carts different stores have require a different amount of space to turn around.  Glad you didn't lose your power in the storm you had last night.

Marilyne, the "translate" your plants was a new term for me for replanting.  I find baby animals of any kinds cute to watch.  I bet the mother rabbit was somewhere close at hand.

Callie, I have opened the New York Harbor webcam in a new tab and plan to create a bookmark on it as would like see the big cruise ships arrive and depart.

deAngel, once was enough for me in New York City and was glad I was on a tour bus with a group of other people.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - Sounds like you had a wild storm last night?  Thunder and lightning are rare here in CA, and when it does happen, it only last for a very short time span - maybe 15 minutes tops?  Rain is just as rare, and getting one inch, would be a big deal!  Usually rain is measured in tenths of an inch here.  I see on the Google News page, that the yearly event known as "Burning Man", had some unusual weather yesterday . . . a major sand storm or dust storm, that was so bad that the thousands of cars on their way to this event out on the Nevada desert, had to stop and sit for hours.  it must be a mess there this morning, as the artists have spent the past week building the Burning Man City.  It probably is in shambles.

Larry - I never got around to "translating" my plants yesterday! ;D  Also, my little pet did not show up last night, so maybe the rabbit family has moved on?  I think you will enjoy the NY Harbor cam.  It's different from the others, in that there is something going on most of the time, and the backdrop of the city is beautiful.

Callie - I haven't yet seen the Statue of Liberty?  Is it in the middle of the harbor, or near the bridge?  I am guessing that from my vantage point on the webcam, that it must be blending in with all the buildings, so I haven't spotted it yet?

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I had to think twice when I saw your word "translate" but I knew what you meant.  Maybe your little rabbit will come back today.

Larry, I responded to you in the Soda Shoppe.  I really thought I had answered your B&T post but I see you hadn't made it yet.

I can't really see, but the sun looks as if it is shining now, but radar shows more rain in the area.  We'll have to go out to make sure the covers are on the deck furniture.  It is quite muggy and we have the air on.

Lots of big waves at Grand Haven.

I just saw this, from CNN;

"Playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon died over the weekend from pneumonia complications at age 91. To tick through his work is to go through a list of the shining comedic achievements of the past few decades: "Barefoot in the Park." "The Odd Couple." "The Out-of-Towners."

Simon's work was so hot for a period during the late 1960s, he had four shows appearing at once on Broadway. Of his more than 30 plays, 13 were made into movies. He received 16 Tony nominations and won best play three times. He also earned four Oscar nominations, a Pulitzer Prize and the Mark Twain Prize. Perhaps his greatest honor is the Broadway theater named for him; he was the only living person to have received such recognition. "

Joan - I received my Jitterbug phone today.  Now have to activate it, and then start studying the user guide.  I remember that you said you didn't like yours, but I can't remember why?

Patricia -Thanks for reminding me about Neil Simon.  I saw a brief clip on the news last night, and meant to look further.  I'll post the information in the Leisure Activities forum - TV/Movies folder.  His movies play quite often on TCM.  Always enjoyable.
As for the NASA photo - "A picture is worth a thousand words!" . . .  :o

wjoan

Marilyne, I liked it till they erased my entire contact list and could not put it back as it was.

Marilyne

Joan - This is the Jitterbug Smart Phone, that includes texting, email, internet access and camera. Is that the one you had?  AJ wanted this one, because it's easier for him to see the keyboard and everything else.  Both of us have vision problems, but he's worse than I am.   So, we shall see how it works out.  How did it happen to erase your contact list?

wjoan

Marilyne, due to my limited vision I only had incoming calls and outgoing calls and voicemail.  They had no excuse as why contact list was deleted nor did I get as much as a "I am sorry" from them.

JeanneP

I was so far behind in reading this forum. don't know why.
Took ages for me to read them all.
I am not really into doing much of anything. Just been to hot. So catching up on lots of reading.  No housework done at all other than keeping one bathroom and kitchen clean.

We had 98 deg today with the humidity making it feel worse. I have not been outside. Meant to go to library but thought later when the sun goes down. Its down but still mid 80s. Same for tomorrow.
First time I have seen this happen.. Got a message from power company. Saying that if people can cut down on the usage tomorrow of Electricity will see some kind of a Cr. on next bill. Then a hour ago a message on my phone asking same thing. Says from3pm to 5pm. If possible . no washmachines. turn A/C down to what you can stand it to be.
Today all Schools started and over 42 Thousand Univ. of Illinois students now here. Suppose all put their A/C on and all the student housing will be running along with the Collage. It is amazing how the Power can supply when it gets as hot as this summer has been. Now will be double the demand.Makes up realize just how spoiled we are. Gas for Cars is up also which means pay more to run A/C in car. I don't see people with windows open.
Just to dark for me to head for library now. they close at 9pm tonight. Their Parking lot  not lit  up enough for me and its also large.

Hi Everyone. It is another sunny morning but will become partly cloudy later today with a high in the mid-90's.  There isn't a too likely chance of rain until perhaps this evening.  I have nothing to write about yesterday as we just stayed home and rested, which seems to be  the norm on Mondays for me.  I hope today Pat will want to go for a haircut and then I will suggest to her that we stop and have our main meal out.  We finished the last of the homemade TV type dinners we had in the freezer last night.  I do have an appointment with a friend who will be here around 10 am this morning and he is very punctual.  All of that will be plenty for today.

Marilyne, with so little rain it is a wonder things grow out your way.  Of course, I know that irrigation makes the difference.  I wonder how many cars will have to be repainted as a result of that sand storm in the Nevada desert.  I hope you will like your Jitterbug phone.  I looked at one of those for Pat but decided it probably was bigger than she would want as she likes to carry her phone in her pocket.  We have not had house phones for a number of years and we each have our own cellphones.

Joan, I sure wouldn't want to lose my contact list.  While Pat didn't have a problem losing her contact list when she switched phones recently it did get messed up and did some duplication.  It took me a while to delete the duplicates.  Not very good customer service to even indicate they were sorry you had lost your list.

JeanneP, good to see a posting from you as has been awhile.  It sounds wise to stay in where it is cool on such hot days.  I remember some of those Illinois hot summer days and we were living in a mobile home with a metal roof at the time.  Fortunately we did have good air conditioning as it was a new mobile home.  I bet you are right about the power drag that would occur on the system when 40,000 new users started using the power all at once.

Mary Ann, I don't expect answers and certainly not in both places as I usually post exactly the same thing in the three discussions I participate in each day.

Patricia, thanks for the writeup on Neil Simon.  I always liked his plays especially "The Odd Couple".  That is some picture from NASA, really ugly looking.

Good Tuesday Morning, Everyone!

The weather here in Maine will be hot but not
too humid for the next three days,  and then
the temps will get down into the 70's  daily and
then Fall willl start to show up and the weather
should be nice for a few weeks.

My kind of nice " Sweater Weather" beginning
to set in....    Hooray!

Have a good day,  Everyone...

First, it was fruits and vegetables, then it was whey, (Items made with milk); products. Then it was chicken and now.... 25,000 pounds of ground beef. From Cooking Light;

25,000 Pounds of Ground Beef Are Being Recalled Due to Possible E. Coli Contamination

"Cargill Meat Solutions in Colorado announced that it is recalling 25,288 pounds of ground beef products that might be contaminated with E. coli, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in a news release.

The recall will affect the 10-pound chubs of “EXCEL 93/7 Fine Grind Ground Beef” with a “freeze by” date of Sept. 5. The products were produced on Aug. 16, and carry the establishment number “EST. 86R.” The problem was discovered on Aug. 22 when the establishment reviewed the product and found that it may have been associated with another product that was believed to be positive for E. coli.

The ground beef was shipped from the Cargill facility to warehouses in Colorado and California. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in the statement that Cargill ground beef products that include the above packing and “best by” dates could be contaminated and should be thrown out or returned to the establishment where they were purchased.

E. coli is a bacteria that can make people sick, and cause diarrhea. Other kinds of E. coli can cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illnesses and pneumonia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At present, there have been no reports of the illness associated with the ground beef. Concerned customers with questions about the recall can call 1-844-419-1574."

Candy had a CT Scan this morning.  Will let you all know if that turned up anything.  Her sores on her body are all healed up now.  :)

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I'm worried about you.  No messages anywhere in S&F from you today?  I hope that you and the rest of the Tock family, are all okay, and just busy with other things.

Joan - Good to hear that Candy's sores are all healed, and that she got the CT scan over with.  Looking forward to hearing about the results.

Hi Everyone.  Our morning starts out overcast but we will see the sun today.  There is a possibility of some rain this afternoon.  The only thing on our agenda for today will be to try to get haircuts (if the man Pat likes to have cut her hair is working today) and then we will once again so to Ruby Tuesday's to take advantage of the buy one get one offer that is good only for today.  This is Scott's day off and we are hoping he will want to join us and then likely he will be coming out to the house for a little while. Yesterday was a quiet day.  A little after two pm I made a quick trip to IHOP and got us a Colorado Omelet to bring home to share with some hash browns.  It is made with three eggs and was loaded with different meats.  I don't know how one person could really eat a whole one as it made a meal for both Pat and I.

Sandy, that is a nice weather forecast.  I sort of like "sweater weather".

Patricia, thanks for the information on the recalled ground beef.  It sounds like none of it will have made it to the East coast area.  One has to wonder how many tainted products do make it to the shelves of stores that are never detected as the food inspectors can only sample a very small amount of the food produced.  I expect the companies themselves also have internal inspection systems set up as a recall or law suits from people getting sick or dying are very expensive and bad for the product line and the bottom line.  Has your weather improved any up your way?  Are you having some cool nights?

Joan, sure hope the CT scan provides some answers.  Glad that the sores have now healed up as they had to have been a nightmare to deal with as well as painful.

Marilyne, it is very unusual for Mary Ann not to post and like you I hope she is OK and we will see a posting here today from her.
