Patricia, I only know about your pain second hand (from Dot).  When her first pains started, she said she'd have to scream to get out of bed.  I think her neighbor heard her one time as their bedrooms are next to each other.  There is sound board between the units so that would have been unusual.  I hope your weather and barometric pressure ease up to relieve your pain.

You are right, the open water has frozen over, just don't try to walk on it.  15 degrees overnight does not provide enough ice for walking.  It is still cold here - 16 degrees at 12:30 pm.

I can hardly see what I am typing - because of the sun, not my eyes.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

I wrote a nice long post this morning, just a few minutes after Larry's, but I don't see it here, so I must have forgotten to hit "Send"!  I'll have to check the other folders I read, in case I accidentally posted my message somewhere else?

Anyway . . . I can't remember what I said, except that I miss all the webcams that I look at, off and on during the day. The cams in and around Duluth still look heavy with snow and ice.  Same with The Soo.

Mary Ann - Did you say that the ships usually return around the middle of March?  That's only a couple of weeks from now, so I can't imagine that the lakes will be thawed out and ready, in that short of a period of time?

Jean - I envy you your 62 degree weather.  Our temps are supposed to hit 60, by the end of the week.  It's in the 50's already this morning, and we're expecting another one of those Pineapple Express storms to arrive tonight.  They always bring warmer temperatures.

Patricia - I can relate to the spasms!  They are just killer pain, and render you completely helpless.  As I said yesterday, the muscle relaxants, are the only med that helps.  It's too bad that any kind of medication that actually works, always causes unpleasant reactions in other parts of the body.

Mary Ann - I can imagine Dot screaming out with pain.  It's a natural reaction, because it's so extreme, and you feel trapped and unable to move.

Marilyn, I think the official opening day of shipping is March 25, a month from today.  In case it is necessary, there are ice breakers on the Great Lakes, but some of those ships look strong enough to break the ice on their own.

We're still at 16 degrees at 1:15 pm and I don't think we'll get much warmer today.  Actually for the whole week we are to be in the 20s.

Tom is at lunch with a friend and will bring me back a Subway sub; I have not had a Subway in a long time because they closed the one near us.  Tom and the friend will be at one that isn't too far, but in the other direction.  He doesn't like Jimmy John because they are so noisy, but I like their sandwiches.  Another one I have not had in a long time.

I smiled to myself when I wrote about closing the Big Mac Bridge because I doubt the Golden Gate Bridge gets closed for ice dropping down, maybe not even for high winds, but they do close the Big Mac for those reasons.  Semis and high-profile trucks are escorted across the bridge at 20 mph.  Years ago a small Yugo drove through the railing and dropped into the water.  I believe it was determined to be a suicide.  I don't know what they've done since to prevent such things but I think they did take steps.

Has anyone noticed they changed the view at the Soo to the one we prefer?  It is snowing heavily there now and I think work is being done on a lock, not near the camera.  I am sure the view will change back before shipping starts.

A sunny but windy Good Afternoon.

Mary Ann, thanks for mentioning the change in the Soo lock pix.  I hadn't checked it in a while.

Over the weekend I noticed ice fishermen on the Duluth 2 Harbors Boat Launch and Depot cams .  Quite a few cars in the boat launch parking area and I could see people moving around out on the lake from both cams.  Some of them walked a very long way to set up their little huts over the fishing holes. Funny to see these little dark dots all over the ice. None there this morning.

Would you give me a link to the Grand Haven web cam, please?

Had a text exchange with Miss Ellen in Florida this morning.  She's enjoying being out of the NY weather but said she's having to get used to the humidity after being away from Oklahoma summers for a couple of years. All going well with rehearsals.

Wishing Everyfriend an Enjoyable Pain-Free and Warm Day.

Grand Haven    http://surfgrandhaven.com/

Callie, I'll check the above to see the link is included and if not, I'll go elsewhere to get it.  Actually, if you click on the Grand Haven name under my name in this folder you can get the site, but I think you'd rather have it in your favorites or somewhere.  (The name Grand Haven did not work, but the link does.)

Things have been quiet here today although I notice the flag is blowing out so we still are having some wind.

Dot just brought over a photo album that Norm had put together and some of the pics date back to 1982 when his oldest son was married.  There are a lot of other pictures in the album too and I think not one has any information on the back.  There are a lot of people who I do not recognize.

Tom brought me a Subway and I cut it in half.  I am now eating the second half.  I am not sure Tom will be here for supper or not.

Hi Everyone. It is another cloudy but warmer day here.  Our calendar is clear for today so will just be taking it easy.  Pat may take my Samsung Tablet back to Costco today.  I didn't like it at all and so Saturday I order an new iPad, which I will use at my easy chair.  I have an older iPad that Pat is using upstairs so don't anticipate any problems getting it set up as there is a lot of similarity with the iPhone.  It is suppose to be here Thursday or Friday.  I did empty the dishwasher this morning for Pat, got the ice pack to her back when she got up and made her coffee.  I told her that was my work for today.  :) I have read all of the postings since I posted yesterday and it seems you all are keeping busy.  Otherwise just checking in for today.

Mary Ann

Hi Larry, it's good to see you here and I see you had a little activity.  Good for you.

We have another cold one, 15 degrees when I got up about an hour ago, 16 degrees now at 9:40.  It looks as if the sun is trying to shine.

Tom agreed to baby sit in Holland tonight and I plan to go with him.  The girls and I had a good time last week and it is a good way for them to know me.  Our forecast for tonight is not that good, but I'll let Tom worry about it.  I'll worry about the other drivers on the road.

Tom is subbing today and has one more school scheduled this week.  Yesterday the school he was to go to cancelled so "no tickee, no washee" - if he doesn't work, he doesn't get paid.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Good morning from rainy but warm, (50 degrees), Northern California.

Larry, sounds like you're getting stronger every day, and slowly working back into your daily routine.  My husband, AJ, also empties the dishwasher for me at least once a day.  He has no problem bending over and removing things on that bottom rack, whereas I have a hard time with it. Our dishwasher is deep, so it's hard to bend and stretch back up. I don't have a problem loading it.

Mary Ann, an evening with the twins tonight, sounds like fun for you and Tom.  Too bad he didn't get to teach today, but I guess the snow days will eventually have to be made up for the school district, so he will likely get lots of work in the next couple of months.

Daughter Sandy, was called for Jury Duty, so she has to be available all week.  She was dismissed yesterday, but will have to check every morning through Friday.  Too bad it had to be this week, as she was hoping to start a new job . . . so she was upset about that.   She came over yesterday afternoon and did her weekly laundry, and stayed for dinner.  I was hoping we'd all go out for dinner, but the rain started, and the wind was blowing extremely hard, so we stayed here.

FlaJean

Larry, you sound good today.  The nice thing about the Apple products is that they are so easily set up and easy to use.  My oldest daughter has a separate keyboard for her iPad because she does a lot of typing, but I don't mind the built in keyboard and can really type fast with two fingers. 😀.

We are having another pleasant day with a high of 70 degrees.  Might have a shower this afternoon.  Between my husband I, we have a stack of books to go back to the library.  Neither one of us are sports fans and with so little decent TV anymore we spend a lot of time reading.

Mary Ann, have a nice trip and enjoy your time with the twins.  Marilyne, you must be an early riser to have already posted.  I'm always slow getting started in the mornings.

Have a good day everyone.

Mary Ann

Tom sent the above link to me about working on the Soo locks.  It is from the TV station in the area.  When the page comes up, scroll down to where there are several pictures in squares and one of them (top center for me) refers to the locks.  Click on that to see pictures and read about it.  I don't know how long the site will last because this is from the TV station.

Good afternoon.  Just checking in as I don't think I have been here for a couple days.  I wasn't feeling well when I first got up, but went back to bed and slept for a couple more hours and I do feel better.

Larry, nice to see your message and so happy that you felt like helping Pat a little bit this morning.  I know she was glad you felt up to it, also.  Sorry you didn't like the  tablet.  I am not that familiar with any Apple products.  My oldest son has everything from Apple, but my youngest son doesn't like Apple at all.  I don't know a whole lot about any of them.  I  have my Kindle and I don't know what my cell phone is.  I don't hardly ever use it and my DIL pays for it.

Mary Ann,  I know you will have fun with the twins tonight.  Will give you more chances for then to get to know you.  I haven't had a Subway sub for a long time.  There is a place right across the street from me,  which I could walk to. That is, if I was able to walk that far.  Just never think of getting someone to get me one from there. But, I do like them.  They don't seem to be as messy as some others.

I haven't looked at any of the web cams for a few days, so will have to go and check them out.  Grand Haven is really cold looking  with all that frozen water.

We had terrible winds yesterday and so cold and raw.  Lots of limbs in the driveway next to me.  There is a long row of big pine trees and the limbs were scattered all over the place.  I don't think anyone has been down to clear them away.

Marilyne,  sounds like you had the bad winds also.  From the weather reports, it seems like it was bad in a lot of places.

I have an Internet friend who lives in northern Calif. and they had so many trees down.  One took out their electric gate and one fell on their RV.  And, she said they had snow, also.  She wasn't expected to have phone or internet service for about a month, but she did post something this morning, But she said service would be intermittent for a while.

Looks like time to get a late lunch.

Sure hope everyone is having a good day and that you all are feeling pretty good.  Good thoughts go out to those of you who are not feeling up to par.  Hope for a better day tomorrow.

Wanted to post to let you all know that I'm still around, just really busy these days.  Seems like between doctor appointments for both of us and daily chores, there just isn't a lot of time left or other things.  The ophthalmologist changed one of Windell's eye meds last week because the pressure in his eyes with his glaucoma had increased.  His macular degeneration has also gotten pretty severe so he has trouble reading mail and other things now and I have been trying to help him sort out his income tax information.

I was interested that so many of us are having joint problems.  We have not had snow but the cold damp weather has really aggravated my knee pain and I am allergic to NSAIDS so all I can take is Tylenol. Usually it gets better toward the end of March or April. We have been eating a lot of meals out at Cracker Barrel and a restaurant called The Shack that has really good meat and vegetables because I just haven't felt like standing in the kitchen to cook.  I have also been very tired lately and two weeks ago I started having a lady from Comfort Keepers to come in once a week so I can run errands I need to do without taking Windell with me.

Larry, so good to see you continuing to post!

Patricia and Mary Ann, I always look forward to hearing about your cats' antics! I went to a computer repair shop recently that had to replace the drive in my laptop and they had a beautiful cat that was a Russian Blue. I started talking to him and reached down and petted him and he stayed close to me until I left even jumping up on the desk in front of me. The secretary was surprised - she said the cat never takes to people like that.  Maybe he recognized a cat lover!  He was a beautiful cat!

Windell wants me to do something for him so will have to go!  Hope the weather gets better for all of you soon!

Mary Ann

Johann, it's good to hear from you.  I can sympathize with Windell having trouble reading because I have the same trouble; it is hard to focus.  In church, I know the first verses of many hymns but when it comes to reading the other verses, I have trouble.

Because I take a blood thinner, I cannot take aspirin and that had been my "cure-all" before then.  I do take Tylenol650 for my arthritis in my shoulder.  It sure is not fun getting old.  Golden years?  How about Rust years?!

My cat is the most neglected cat but he still clings to me when he wants petting.  Tom and I are leaving in about a half hour to go to Holland to care for his granddaughters and I tried to take a nap.  Before I could decide to get up and look for Kendrick, he came in to find me.  He will be alone tonight while we are gone.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I'm sure you're back home from Holland, and probably sound asleep by now.  It's nine o'clock here, so would be midnight in Grand Rapids. The twins were probably sorry to see you go, but Kendrick must have been happy to see you return!

Johann - nice to see you here, and hope you return again soon. Seems that everyone is suffering with bone, joint or muscle pain this winter. I hope we get a break from the cold weather soon.  Spring will officially arrive in less than a month!

Joy - Yes, we've had strong winds and heavy rain for the past couple of days, which always causes downed trees and serious accidents when they fall on a house or a car.  Where do your friends live who are in Northern Cal?
I hope you wake up tomorrow morning feeling much better, and that the weather will be nice enough for you to go outside for some fresh air.  :)

I - we, are soon out for our almost 3 hours (afternoon) sessions of bingo, raffle, cup of tea and biscuit social, this is a once a week bit of fun that breaks up my dull week. This is where I don myself in nail polish and a bit of hand jewellery, I like to make the effort, even if my body is not always willing...Last week I won £5, yesterday I won £10 on my lottery ticket, maybe I am building up for the big time...if so, I promise I shan't forget you all.. ;)

Like our Joan FL and Jeanne Lee, we will get that old dilapidated bus out, once we have cleared it of rotten fish, it will do the rounds and pick up our members from all corners of the globe...

larryhanna

Hi Everyone. It is going to be another nice day here getting up to about 70 degrees this afternoon with a chance of a few showers.  Yesterday afternoon our minister visited us for 30 minutes or so, which was very enjoyable.  Early yesterday evening one of our friends from Sunday School brought us a meal plus.  She brought over enough food to about 3 meals and it was good as we had some of it for our supper last evening.  I was shocked yesterday afternoon when my new iPad was delivered as hadn't expected it until tomorrow or Friday.  I also got the new case and keyboard that I had ordered for the Samsung Galaxy Tablet.  Unfortunately, those two items will have to be returned as neither worked with my new iPad.  It took a couple of hours to get the new iPad up and running but that includes the automatic backup of all of the apps I have running on my phone.  These were all stored in the iCloud.  I was a happy camper when I found I will be able to work my daily crossword puzzles on the new iPad.  If I made one step forward yesterday morning I took at least two steps back by 8 pm when I went to bed. I guess I overdid yesterday morning, although it wasn't very much. I think I was a weary as I have ever been in this siege and am short of breath this morning.  I do have a 1:45 appointment for my routine pacemaker check at 1:45 this afternoon.  Scott is off today and will take me as I am going to need to use the transport chair this afternoon.  I am taking another pass today on making individual comments to the fine postings we have here since I read yesterday and posted yesterday.

Joy

Good morning. It is a pretty sunny morning,  but still  very cold.

Marilyne,  my friend lives in Cottonwood.  I did see a message from her yesterday on a group site we both are in, but she said her phone and internet service would be sporadic.

Even tho it is sunny,  it is still to cold for me to venture outside.  I do hope to get out on Friday, but they are predicting a little bit of snow early around rush hour,  but should be clear by late morning.  I am going to lunch with some friends and family  and have to leave around 10:45,  So, hope it will be clear by that time.

Larry, so good to see your message this morning.  Sorry that you feel like you did too much yesterday.  But, at  least you got something accomplished that pleased you. Good luck with your doctor's appointment today.  Glad that Scott is able to take you..

Mary Ann,  hope you had a great time with the twins last night.  I am sure you were tired,  but hopefully.  it was a good tired feeling.

Jackie, you day out today sounds like it will be a lot of fun. And,  hopefully.  it will be a winning day for you. So glad that you are up to going.  Just getting out with other people is good for you.   And, happy to hear that it sounds like you will be all "gussied up".  LOL  Have fun !!

I hope everyone will have a great day.

Mary Ann

We got home about 10:30 pm last night.  I took a few minutes to check in here and to my horror, no one had posted since I had posted at 5:30 pm and I see Marilyn was the first to post after that at midnight my time.  But no one had posted in any of the folders, not just this one.

The girls and I had a good time.  They get along well together and they talk a mile a minute - if we could only understand half of it.  I wanted to watch "Finding Your Roots" on PBS last night, so we had the TV on.  I had the remote, but somehow the channel was changed and a hockey game was on.  Jo said "hockey" and watched it until I changed back to PBS.  I was able to watch my program, but I'll see if I can get it on my computer because I missed a lot.  I was able to sit to watch the program and Jo sat with me and I hoped she's go to sleep, but she didn't.  Ellie was hopping around and both girls have screamy voices yet.  Since both of them react with me I love to go with Tom when he baby sits.  He gets to take them upstairs to bed as I don't do stairs unless necessary.  They are both darling little girls.

Driving was good both ways, but we did have snow on the way home and we have snow on the sidewalk where we had none when we left.  If Tom is subbing this morning, he will leave in a few minutes.  It is for a short time, not a full day so he won't get the full amount of pay.  I told him it would at least fill his gas tank!  I had thought he was teaching today but I think now it is Friday.

I woke up at 9:30 this morning, so you can see I was tired!  Tom was tired when we got home, he just said "good night" and headed for bed.  I had to get the cat food before I could start and I have to do more to get ready for bed - pills is only one thing.

Larry, it was so good to read your message but I feel bad you overdid things and are so tired this morning. Good luck with your pacemaker check this morning.  It was nice of your minister to stop by to see you.  And how nice of your friends to bring so much food for you.  I'll bet Pat appreciated it.

Joy, you're right, I am tired, but it is a "good" tired.

Jackie, that was a lot of activity for you.  And you even won some money!  Good for you!

Marilyn, I got a good-night kiss from Jo, but Ellie was halfway up the stairs by the time I thought of it.

It is now just after 11 am and I should get ready for the day.  Tom went out for breakfast and I never heard a thing.  He brought back a cranberry muffin for me and that has been my breakfast so far.  Whatever I eat later will be brunch and maybe a bit more healthy.  I'm not going to get dressed until I finish the S&F folders I read.

No wins for me today but out table of six is a lucky table as four ( including Richard ) of our table won at either bingo or raffle number, one won £10...Told them we shan't be there next Wednesday as its my monthly MS social in Somerset, the 62 mile round trip...but they are starting new weekly Monday sessions, starting next week ( same church venue ) of word play...all sorts of word games and card games, in pairs or small groups, with coffee, tea and biscuits to follow, so something else for me to look forwards to...
Today they gave out notices of one lady member who had had an operation was back with us today after a 2 or 3 week absence, another regular member who was absent today had had a stroke..

Mary Ann

Jackie, it looks like you win some and you lose some.  It is nice you will have access to the word games soon.  Are those a shire thing or a community thing.  A 62-mile round trip is a long way, even at 31 miles one way.

Tom left for subbing about 11 am and will return around 5 pm.  I am happy he found something because he needs the money.  I do not subsidize him!

We're all the way up to 21 degrees F now.

Mary Ann

Good morning, just checking in. Yesterday I had to go out for a couple of hours and came home and slept seven.

MaryAnn, glad you enjoyed your time with the girls even if your program became preempted and Jackie, it sounds like you had a great time!

Mary Ann

Patricia, I saw enough of the program to make me wonder if I want to use up an hour to watch it again.  I am always interested in all of his guests, but Michael Moore was one of the guests this week and he is controversial and from Michigan.  He was entirely different on the program last night and so surprised at some of the information.  The other two guests were actresses and I was not familiar with them, but the program always takes the guests back to early times (1600s) and is able to tell them what their ancestors did - good or bad.  The program will only be on a few more weeks because it is not a regular one.

The girls were the better program!  They're used to me now; I'm part of the scenery.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Hello everyone! I won't wish you a Good Morning, even though it's still morning here.  I know that all of you who post here, are long finished with today's morning!  :D

Jackie - sounds like you had a good time playing games today, even though you didn't win anything.  Its been a long time since I played Bingo, although I have bought a number of raffle tickets in recent years.

Patricia - Good to see you here this morning. I didn't see a post from you yesterday, and I wondered if your muscle and back spasms were slowly subsiding?

Mary Ann - As expected, you had a good time with Eleanor and Johanna. They are certainly calm and well behaved for two year olds.  I've heard that twins keep each other entertained, and never crave as much attention from family members, as singles do.
Did you mean that Michael Moore was on, "Finding Your Roots"?  That would have been interesting to see. Shelley, my older daughter loves that TV show, and has been urging me to watch it.  She's very much into genealogy, and has a "tree" on Ancestry, that's very impressive.  She also joined, 23 and Me.

Joy - Your friend in Cottonwood, lives in a lovely little  town, up near Mt. Shasta. It's a beautiful, historic area of California - North of where I live, in the San Francisco Bay Area.  My father was born near Cottonwood, in McCloud, which was nothing but a lumber camp in 1909, when he was born. All of the little communities around MT Shasta are nice, and the mountain itself is absolutely spectacular!  I would love to live in that area, and to have the pleasure of looking at that mountain every day.  We thought about retiring there, but our adult kids and grandchildren were all here, so we stayed.

Good afternoon from a brrrrrr-cold/black- icy Central Oklahoma.

Mary Ann,  sounds as if you had a fine time with the twins.  So happy you getting to "make memories" with them.

Larry, so glad to see a newsy post from you this morning.

Jackie,  sounds as if you're becoming quite the "social butterfly".  Good for you!!!!!  Your groups seem similar to groups here who play Party Bridge.  Not seriously competitive with strict rules like Duplicate - fun to win and always fun to enjoy the camaraderie.  My church used to have a "table game day" but the interest dwindled and it is no more.

An Arctic Front moved into the state yesterday afternoon and another one came through overnight.  Result:  schools, churches and appointments almost all cancelled or stopping early today - and probably will be tomorrow.
I was supposed to be hostess for my Bridge group tomorrow.  We meet at a local restaurant so nobody has to fix lunch or a lot of refreshments :) ; hostess just takes candy or cookies for dessert.  However, after hearing the forecast, it was a unanimous decision to cancel this time.
I'd made cookies and should try to freeze them for next time..... but probably won't. :) :) [/size]

I didn't even start "....Roots" last night but did  watch "World of Dance" - another talent competition show.  Almost all the competitors were - to me - more gymnasts than dancers but I stayed with it and now, of course, will "have" to follow through to see who wins.

I don't usually like watching the auditions of this type of show but learned that someone from Oklahoma has made it to the next level on "The Voice".  Guess I'll need to check on that.....if I remember.

Quite a few little ice-fishing huts scattered around on the Duluth Two Harbors Depot cam.  Hope they're having fun.

Marilyn, as I mentioned, I did have a good time with the girls last night.  I think too that twins keep each other company and find their common entertainment.

On our PBS station it is possible to bring up a previous program and watch it at a later time.  I had thought of doing that, but I think I got enough of the program last night that it isn't necessary; at least I have not tried to watch it today.  Does your PBS station have that capability?  If so and you care to watch it, try, it is an interesting program.  Michael Moore found out there were Quakers in his background which surprised him greatly.  He certainly was different last night than what he is pictured in the news.  Of course, he was not doing anything controversial last night.  The program is divided into quarters and each person (sometimes two and other times three) are featured in each quarter.  I think next week will be a rerun from other years.

I may round up the cat and see if he wants to take a nap with me.  I just finished lunch which turned out to be a half pizza (one person pizza) but it took so much energy to eat half of it that I'll save the rest for later.  It came from the frozen food department of my supermarket. Sicilian brand.

Mary Ann

Callie - Marilyne...
...who would have thought that it would take me almost 68 years to get into playing Bingo, but it has...I go for the fun and enjoyment more than the thought of winning money...of course some members take it more seriously than others... :-X  ;)
Mary Ann...
...by shire and community thing, do you mean is it local or further afield? When we leave in our car, I see many walking homewards, but also taxis turn up, so dont know the distance people will travel to get there but, we travel a good 6 or 7 miles, so relatively local to us, well a tad out of our way but doable..

Mary Ann

Jackie, that you have fun is most important.

Mary Ann

MarsGal

My Grandmother was very lucky at Bingo, winning often.

About a week ago, I saw a female Bald Eagle flying fast and low. This is the first one I've seen in a few years although I know they are in the area. What surprised me was the speed at which she was going. I am so used to just seeing them lazing along on the thermals. Three days ago, I was delighted to see a male Bald Eagle. Lots of small birds starting to migrate north, and the sea gulls (I call them river gulls) are congregating on the Susquehanna. The annual migratory bird count was a few weeks ago, but I didn't look-see what the results are for this spring.

Tomorrow is St. David's Day. This weekend my sister and I will be attending a luncheon celebration held by the local Welsh Club. This is the first time in several years we were able to locate them. We had thought they disbanded since we couldn't find any info for the last several years. We may just join now that we both are retired.

Joy

Good morning.  Nice to think that February is just about over.  March can be a nasty month, but hopefully, in a couple weeks, signs of Spring will be appearing.

March 10, which is only 10 days away, is the day we push the clocks ahead here in the US.  I know a lot of people do not like Daylight Savings Time, but,  I am one who loves the longer evenings.  That is always a good sign that spring is on the way.

It has really been slow in the couple boards that I get on.   Hopefully, maybe it is because most of us are so tired of the cold, snow and windy weather, that we just don't have anything better to talk about.

Hope Spring will be a new awakening for all of us.

Have a good day.
