As I thought, Tom slept in this morning and also did not go to church.  He came upstairs sometime after 12 noon and was going out for breakfast.  I joined him and had a second breakfast of eggs, hashbrowns, toast and coffee.  Tom now is with Annie, probably at her home.  I'd like to see her more often, but I know she likes one-on-one with her dad so unless I'm invited, I don't go.

Marilyn, Tom would just as soon go to PA next week, but Robin suggested next year.  Tom and I agreed that the last visitors three years ago probably were Tom and Robin.  Hereafter, they will call in advance to see what the conditions are.

I don't have the experience with animals that Patricia has, but I have seen pictures of polar bears on the ice and I read about the ice melting to t he extent there is or will be none.  I have felt our habits have made a difference in the air quality, but I did not realize they affected other parts of the world.

Patricia, I don't think it's bad when you go "off the wagon" once in a while, IF you go back on it right away.  i think you are disciplined enough that you will lose those added pounds very soon.

It is just after 5 pm and is starting to get dark.  Being in the house, it makes no difference, but I do notice it when I look outside or at the ships.

Kendrick is resting in his bed that I put in here.  Since he wants to be with me, I am glad he is using the bed.

Marilyne, she had figs, apple slices, two types of grapes plus slices of carrots, broccoli, different sweet peppers, three types of crackers and that's not all. She had black olives, green olives, Greek olives, and four more types of crackers. Around this, she layered soft cheese slices with cream cheese slices and two types of hard cheese. There were people who had a hard time leaving it for the dinner table!

MaryAnn, your post lists 1:13 PM my time and this post is posted at my time at 1:21 Pm. Somehow I think there was a longer interval between postings.

Patricia, your last post was at 5:23 EST.  My post said 5:12 and if it read 1:13 your time, we are four hours apart.

Forgive me as I've been up since three this morning and I've gotten sluggish. That was what I was trying to convey.

Is it any wonder I get confused?  ::) Mary Ann - Your last post shows 10:28 pm. YESTERDAY on my computer and Patricia's last post shows 10:48 p.m. YESTERDAY! (edit) This one says I posted TODAY at 2:16 am.

Mary Ann

Beverly, until the time change, my time showed CDT and with the change, everything is OK - for me.  I don't think the gizmo changed, but now we are even with CDT.  Next Spring I'll be off an hour (I'm off anyway!).

Maybe if you e-mail Bubble, she can change it.  I contacted her when we lost the Reply button and she fixed it.

Mary Ann - We were living in Oklahoma and Chape was having to travel a lot to the surrounding states. Nights alone were long. He convinced me to try using the computer and signed me up on AOL (You've got mail!  :) ) I tried finding some Senior Chats and accidentally came across SeniorNet. They seemed like a nice group so after awhile I posted a message. (I think it was 1995) The rest is history! The discussion group was called The International Café led by Joan Grimes along with Pat Scott. I was there when we discovered posting in color using HTML. We actually had to learn some HTML language as they didn't have the choices to click on as we do now. Once I got the hang of it I started each response (and I tried responding to everyone!) with a different color. It was a lot of work but I had plenty of time on my hands and I enjoyed it.  Norm and Papa John were already on SN when I joined and I remember him mentioning Aardvark. Sometime along Joan Lavelle (Biscuit) started "Bis'Nest" and Pat Booton started "Boot's Tidbits". I don't remember all the details (or the year) but there was some friction and hard feelings between a few in the Café and Norm branched out with Norm's Bait and Tackle. Several of us followed him including Papa John. I tried to keep up with all four places......

During some of my sleepless time last night, I thought about this. I think when Norm first left the Café he posted in the Michigan discussion and then started Norm's B & T. It was so long ago my memory is a little fuzzy as to the chain of events. When Senior Net unceremoniously ended the forum and Pat Scott opened Seniors and Friends for us, they dropped "Norm's" and called it "Bait and Tackle". Norm eventually won the battle and it became Norm's B & T again! The International Café was dropped and Soda Shoppe began. We lost a lot of the original members. Either they couldn't find the new forum or chose not to join. Some joined Facebook and are still there. Sadly, quite a few have passed.

Beverly, thanks for YOUR memories.  I really was not a regular in those days.  I'd post occasionally, but it was Norm's baby and I tried to stay out.  I do think that Norm's Bait & Tackle was attached to one of the folders, possibly the Michigan one because that is when I started posting more.  Norm and I would post about the same thing, only our views did not agree.  I think the only thing we agreed on was his marriage to Dot.  She was so good for him and to him.  I think I started posting, or at least reading, in 1996.

Today I have a hearing test and I am going to a new place, also near here.  It may be the number of years that have passed since my first test, but this new place requires so much more paper work.  I didn't realize, but they have several offices and in other cities.  The old place is now part of a chain, but was not when I went there.  I don't know what it is, but I just did not want to go back to the other audiologist.  That is the reason I went onto a fourth year with my aids and I think three years is the norm.  We shall see.

The ground is covered with snow and if we get the cold temps we are promised, the snow will stay.  I was going to leave the cushions on the deck furniture but I don't want to cover them while they are covered with snow.  Tom and Robin will tackle them tomorrow and all cushions will be in the storage room.  It wasn't procrastination that got us this far but Mother Nature jumped the gun.  We have had snow in November before, in fact, I remember having a foot of snow on the deck, but is isn't a usual occurrence.

Remembering Armistice/Veterans/Remembrance Day.  Both Dad and Norm were in service, Dad in the US and Norm in Germany.  I had two first cousins in the South Pacific and one of them was on the Southampton when it was hit and he spent time in the water.  The other cousin was a medic.

Now to see if any freighters are on the river and lake.

One ship came north through Marine City and I can tell  you it is a Winter Wonderland in Michigan.  Of course, the entire state is covered with snow.  As the ship came into view, it was as a shadow was emerging.  When it was even with the camera, it was quite sharp, but faded again as it went out of view.  The weather won't stop the ships now and I am sure the crews all have winter clothing.  Someone in Chat wondered about walking from "fore" to "aft" whether they had to go outside or if there was some way below to get from here to there.  The answer seemed to be that some ships had tunnels but not all.  Those are long ships for long walks.

BEVERLY - Looks like we both started in Senior Net at about the same time?  Thanks for reminding me of the International Cafe!  That was the first folder that I posted in too.  I liked Joan Grimes so much, and had a nice email friendship going with her for many years. She was the one who encouraged me to post in Arts and Entertainment, which included Art, music, movies, and Television.  I also posted in the books and Literature discussion, and liked the ongoing quiz, where we would guess the name of the book and author.  If you were the first to get the answer right, you would win your choice of a few different prizes.

My husband AJ, got our first computer in about 1995, because he wanted to use the Apple Music Program, to do the musical arrangements for the Big Band, (dance band), that he was playing in at the time.  I wasn't particularly interested in the computer at first, but when I heard about the internet, I wanted to know what it was all about.  Remember how we used to have to dial up on our telephone, to get connected?  I saw Senior Net, recommended in an AARP magazine that we got at the time, and I tried it and was immediately hooked!

MARY ANN - I remember the Michigan folder, although I never posted there.  I was friends with Katie Sturtz, because she posted in the Arts and Entertainment folders where I spent most of my time.  She always encouraged me to join Michigan but I never did. I did read it often.
Let us know how your hearing test goes today?   I should have one also, but have been putting it off.  I'm still struggling along with AJ's old hearing aids! ha ha  I started wearing them about a year ago, and thought they were fine, until recently.  Now they seem muffled and not as loud as I need.  I hate to spend the money on new ones, but I know I should.

MarsGal

Mary Ann, when I checked this morning, there were not any ships about, but it sure was snowing. Visibility very low. USS Indianapolis is off the coast of Nova Scotia about now, currently listed as unspecified ship again. I caught it playing around near Prince Edward Island yesterday. CG Hollyhock has been doing duty around Green Bay and is moored at Sturgeon Bay at the moment. Boatnerd's webcam is completely covered. Ship about due at the Algonac website is very difficult to see, just a vague shadow almost lost in the muddle. May have a little more luck at Marine City.

CallieOK

Merry Monday,

Cold, drizzly and windy in central Oklahoma.  Yard and patio are covered with piles of yellow leaves - must have had a lot of wind overnight.
Wish these Arctic fronts that keep plunging south would stay in their own area!

Marilyne,  my hearing aids are feeling like yours (A.J.'s?  ;) ); I can hear a voice but the words are blurred.
I didn't realize there was a time limit until the audiologist said she thought mine would be good for another year.  I suspect that time is up.  I'd asked her about the rechargeable ones and she said she didn't recommend them "right now" because she feels technology will improve them in the near future.

Not much going on in my little corner of the world. Probably be a "recliner radish" day for me - although the rest of the week will be busy...weather permitting.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

Mary Ann

Callie, I think the hearing aids work quite well for three years, then they start to go downhill.  That has really been my problem - I can hear that someone is talking, but I cannot understand a word.  That is what makes it so hard at church is I sit there and can hear about half of what is said.  And if the speaker lowers his/her voice to make a point, I don't get the point!  But I knew I was pushing it at four years.  I just didn't want to go back to my original place - and I still don't know why!

MarsGal, I noticed Boatnerd was completely covered.  It was touch and go with the last ship I watched in Marine City because the camera globe got covered with snow.  The monitors are not by the camera so only a strong wind can help get rid of some of the snow.

We here are getting quite a bit of snow and the wind is blowing.  However, I would not call it a blizzard.  I think I can get by without wearing boots.

Marilyn, I bought my first computer in 1986 before I retired.  I was using one at work and took to it like a duck takes to water.  I bought a Tandy 1000 and printer.  I wanted to enter all of the genealogy information I had - and I did.  And more so by now!  I have not stopped since that time.  I know of six people who bought computers after I bought mine - all Tandy 1000s but no one has what I have now - all different makes.

I think I'll look in the refrigerator to see what I can lunch on.  My appointment is at 2 pm, probably will take an hour, and I doubt we want to lunch that late.

Mary Ann

FlaJean

Today will be nice and warm but colder temperatures of high 50s are the forecast for the next few days.

We got our first computer in the 80s. My son's friend was building computers called YIBM and talked us into buying one.  When I first joined AOL, it was like a community and I really enjoyed it.  Somehow I found the Mystery forum on the Seniors' site about 1996.  I hardly posted anywhere else.  patH's sister Joan managed the Mystery forum for a long time.

Marilyne, I remember Happy Dan as we posted in some of the same folders.  Later JackWVA and Sato got me interested in the Videos and Photos folders and that is where I did a lot posting.  Those are such nice memories.  Time does March on, unfortunately in many ways.

Today is Armistice Day after World War I, which we now call Veterans Day.  Other countries call this Remembrance Day.  Our family is full of veterans.  Larry's oldest brother was a veteran of World War II, Larry a veteran of Korea and Vietnam, and our son is a (100% disabled) veteran of the US-Iran conflict.  My father was too young for World War I and too old for World War II, but he and my sister did plenty during the World War II years working at the local shipbuilding company in the war effort.  I just finished reading several books about the World War II years in Europe and I guess this made the day all the more memorable to me.

Mary Ann, I grew up in the Virginia Hampton Roads area and we seldom had snow.  But when we did, we loved it.  When we first moved to Maryland we saw our share of snow.  We moved there in January 1988 and the snow was on the ground until March.  My husband grew up in Ohio and he didn't and doesn't like snow at all.  That's why we ended up in Florida.

Hope everyone is having a nice day.

Joy

Good afternoon.  Just getting in here to say "Hello". I just posted a long message in the Soda Shoppe..

I know I first got into the SeniorNet group, not long after it started. I had seen an article in the Sunday magazine and hadn't had my computer that long.

My grandson lived with us, and his other grandfather had gotten him a computer to use for school. I fooled around with it for a while, and my son really got into it and learned all about it very quickly.  By then I wanted my own  So, I think that might have been around the late 90's ?  I had  a friend who had Fibromyalgia and that was when there were quite a few medical informative boards.  When I saw the one for Fibro, I asked a few questions for my friend. That was when Silvia Tribe was the moderator and she encouraged me to keep coming back, even tho I didn't suffer from the Fibro. She and I became really good friends over the years. We would talk on the phone every couple weeks.  She passed away a few years ago, and I still miss her.  She went through a very sad time towards the end of her life.  Also became friends with Bobbie GOuld around that same time.  And, there were a couple others who were active in that forumn.  All became good friends and those medical forumns became very busy.  The individual "state" groups were very popular back then,  also.  They kept very busy.  Sadly, so many of those old posters are no longer with us.

I used to just love all the banter that Norm and Poppa John had together.  Made it really fun to look forward to everyday.  Poppa John had a wonderful family, didn't he?  And, I do remember Katie.  She had a son who had ALS,  That was so sad, as he was a young man with a family, if I remember correctly.  I remember Pat Scott and her first husband and her dog, Geordie.  I think she had the dog with her almost all the time.

Some nice memories.  But, like all things now, times do change. I guess that is part of life.

I need to see about some lunch. Have a great afternoon.

I remember when we had the teams in Seniornet but can't remember the year it ended. I remember I had just sent a cheque in to them and it was cashed but then ended that week. Big Surprise to all.
I still see a few of the people are in Senior Learning but most have passed. I kept intouch with one I Australia and 3 in the UK. living close to where I am from. ONe in Scotland still alive but never does write in S and F. 3 in UK just passed last year. I met up with them the years I went home.  Fact I met up with a pretty large group that were in the Seniornet and having a meeting in London. WAs the Book Forum I believe.
I also held a day one here in Champaign, Ill. and about 20 did show up. That was nice. How the years have past. The Get togethers in all the States did very well. Was lot of work though for the people who were in charge. I don't think there are many Senior forums on the Internet anymore. People don't even get into Emailing. I get very few. Texting or Facebook have taken over. I don't care for either one.

Good morning from a clear, beautiful Interior! I had another late night and slept until ten this morning. I knew we had warmed up because you can innately feel the differences, and in looking out the window, the snow looked soft, and the light had no blue tinge. We had minus one yesterday, and it's plus twenty-seven now.

I've always had dry skin as a redhead; I would burn, peel, and then be white underneath again. I was miserable in the South with it, and in the hot days as I had to cover up each time. I mention this because I believe it's how I sense the temperature changes. I may be wrong, but I can also tell when an arctic winter is coming.

The air becomes drier, my arms feel sunburned, and it's why we don't have as much snow because it takes warm, moist, humidity to make snow, and most arctic regions are arid. One of the worst winter effects here is static electricity. You can catch it on the carpet or touch your pet or a person and transfer a jolt. It's hard on electronics, too, if not protected.

Farrah has gotten very needy and verbal with it. When she wants attention, she expects to get it! Although she's never meowed, I've learned her various sound effects as they are constant but have different tones and meanings for different situations.  Claire thought I was being one of those crazy cat ladies, (She's not a pet person.); but my vet agreed with me. I wasn't anamorphizing because he has both rescued cats and dogs and one, a feral cat, doesn't meow either.

I'm going out sometime today with friends to see about taking free classes at the university. You have to be over sixty-five and you don't get the degree. You're auditing the course, but it should be interesting. I don't know the time as we're waiting on someone to get off work.

I'm hoping everyone is doing well today and MaryAnn, I hope your hearing test goes well, and you like the audiologist!

I joined SeniorNet in 2000, so I was late coming in and spent most of my time in PSP with Den, Joan Grimes's brother, and Oscar, among others. I became online friends with Adrienne, Rae, and Bunny and through them discovered Pets and Recipes, plus the  Missouri and Michigan folders. I was fascinated with Jerry from the Netherlands and his stories about life under the Nazis.

I met Bubble in PSP. I came to SeniorNet via Ginny, and others from ThirdAge and ThirdAge played the same trick with their forums shortly after SeniorNet. I know when SeniorNet cast us out, there were several attempts at various groups until Pat brought us together again. I also remember Norm originally in AOL or believe I do.

CallieOK

Just looked at the Lake Michigan web cam.  There are 5 surfers in the water having a fine time.  Crazy!!!!!

Mary Ann

Wow!  Callie.  I haven't looked yet, but I imagine the Lake Michigan surfers are wearing wet suits.  The water isn't that cold yet and doesn't freeze when the ground does.

I had a good visit with the new audiologist and I'm glad so far that I made the change.  For one thing, the hearing aids will be much less expensive than what I've paid before.  Batteries and service are included for the life of the hearing aids.  I also will have an instruction period when I get them.  The place is close to home and I told Tom that when/if he needs them, he should go there.

Kendrick does not really meow and rarely makes any sound at all, but he has made sounds to let me know what is what.  The loudest I ever heard him was when we took him to the vet and had to put him in the cat carrier.  He did not like that at all and let us know loudly that he was unhappy.  When nothing bad happened to him at the vet, he was quiet as a churchmouse all the way home!  I don't think he's been in the carrier since so I wonder how he'd act if we put him in it again.

Mary Ann

Tomereader1

Several hours back, I tried looking in at the Marine City cams, but they were not streaming at the time, nor a few minutes ago.  Duluth Harbor had several from this morning.  Didn't find anything at the Soo site either.  hmm.
I remember Senior Net, and it was so much fun as I had never been involved in anything like that.  Then all of a sudden, boom, they cut us loose.  I remember taking a couple of Computer training classes at the local Senior Net facility.  I think technology is outpacing the ability to teach classes there anymore. I'm sure they do in other locales.  These were held in a Senior Living facility, and most students were "of an age" shall I say, even the instructors!  It was fun and enlightening, didnt cost an arm and a leg either.  I remember a lot of the names many of you have posted.  I remember Bobbie Gould, didn't she travel around the country in a camper most of the time?

angelface555

I just learned that the university's elder program is not today, but next week. I'm going to have to start an appointment calendar!

MaryAnn, one thing I've heard is that when you first start using the aids, so much is so loud that many turn them off.

A cat never forgets the "evil carrier!" At least most of the ones I have, haven't. Farrah doesn't like the vet. She scrunches down and cries. Then when he handles her, she's fine. I've heard that cats only use the meow to communicate with people. Most ferals over four weeks old with a few exceptions don't meow according to my vet.

The rivers here no longer freeze in the winter but have floating ice. There are some that actually wear wetsuits and ride jet skies or watersky behind boats. They always make the paper at least once.

Mary Ann

Patricia, while these will be new hearing aids, they will not be my first aids.  The audiologist warned me about the loudness with new aids.  I think I have a quick enough hand that I can grab the offending aid(s) if necessary.  I do not wear the aids all of the time; I'm alone with no one to talk to so why should I wear them.  I want to say that when I am wearing them, I forget I have them; they do not bother me.  And if I do not like them or have trouble with them in the first 30 days, I can return them.  I still have to have some help in hearing so I would want replacements.

Mary Ann

Beverly

Mary Ann - Take a look at Photos Then and Now. I ran across this in My Gallery.

I've had a couple of good days after a "not so good" week. Hope it continues. My son and his wife will be here sometime next week.

Chape has been doing most of the grocery shopping but today I went with him. With the amount of money I spent he may leave me home next time!  :)

Today was Donna's final chemo treatment. Her daughter surprised her with new earrings, a beautiful cyclamen plant, plus several other gifts and balloons. She said she would have bought some of her favorite chocolate candy but since taking chemo, chocolate doesn't taste good to her. She will have a PET scan, bloodwork, etc. on Dec. 16 to get the results. I'm hoping and praying for the best.

So many posts I'd like to respond to..... maybe tomorrow. I may even take notes!

Looks like I'm the first one here this morning, which is unusual.  Only 8:30 here, so I'm just starting on the day, but all of you East Coast members are heading toward lunch time already!  Nothing on tap here today, except Sandy is coming over this afternoon to do her weekly wash, so I'll be looking forward to that.  I'll return later, when I have more to say - I'm still not completely awake yet.  :)

Mary Ann

Funny, Marilyn, but I thought I had posted here, on the other hand, I don't know when I would have had time.  I had a haircut appointment at 9:15 and we had breakfast at the restaurant next door and got home about 10:30.  There was nothing to respond to when I got on the computer but I did post something in the Soda Shoppe.  I have now made an appointment for tomorrow at the doctor's office to have my ears cleaned because I don't do a good job of it and I want the ears to be clear of wax when I get my new hearing aids next week.

We are enjoying a bright sunny day but the temperature in the sun is only 23 degrees and it was only 18 degrees when I got up at 7:30 am.  By the end of the week, we should be at 40 degrees and that is when we plan to go to Portland MI to see our new baby in Paula's family.

Robin will be here this afternoon and I hope to get a nap in before she gets here.  Tom and she will take care of the deck furniture, removing the seats and covering the bases.  Because it's been cold enough, the snow has remained on the cushions and I know we won't leave the cushions on under the covers.  Tom said the cushions would go into the laundry tubs.

I remember most of the people that were on Senionet you mention. Some is rayed online with using email. For awhile. Specially Jerry and his wife in Belgium. He and wife so close. She then got ill. And I believe passed. Jerry then stopped writing.
I had Kath in the cooking for a couple years. And 2 more in u.k who now passed away just last year
I met up with them over the years.
