We are back from my hearing aid check and all is well.  She has a gadget that attaches to the aids and she can tell how much use they had.  In my case, not much, because with no one to talk to or no TV to watch, I don't wear them.  If I do put them in, I wear them all day unless I nap because I don't like to nap with them in as I can feel them.

We are having a so-so day, dreary but snow free.

Patricia, congratulations on losing two pounds.  That is an accomplishement!  I told Tom I'd like to weigh Kendrick because I think he weighs more than the 15 pounds of a couple of years ago.  However, he is a BIG cat and I am sure stretched out tail to nose, he is almost four feet long.  There is a lot to pet!

Tom is going to take his car in to have the brakes fixed soon and that will cost a pretty penny.  However we are planning to get him a new-to-him car soon and he doesn't want to sell this one with faulty brakes.  I haven't checked his mileage recently, but it is close to 300,000 miles; not all of those miles were put on by Tom.  He dares to buy used cars but I do not as I don't know enough about car noises etc.  But I don't worry about that now!

I am fortunate that I don't have to go anywhere often since I don't drive.  I find that I do not miss it and if Tom wants to go somewhere and asks me to go along, I'm more than happy to go.  He likes to drive and I felt driving was a necessity and convenience.  In the fall, I would sometimes drive out in the county to see colored trees and I was happy to pick up or take home friends.  I was happy I could drive!

It may be nap time.

Maryc - If you like cats, you might think about getting one for your mouse problem, and also for companionship?  If so, consider getting an older cat.  At our shelters, there are lots of sweet and calm senior cats, who are waiting for someone to adopt them.  Many  were left, after their owners passed away.  Our last cat, Winnie, did a great job of keeping this old house critter free, both upstairs and down.  He liked to go outside to the backyard during the day and either catch or scare away  those pesky moles and gophers that ruin our gardens!

The downside to getting a cat at our age, is that you have to do lots of bending down to take care of the litter box.  Also food and water bowls are usually on the floor and requires the same bending.  It's hard on our backs and knees as we grow older.  I sure do miss the comfort and love I enjoyed from our cats and dogs over the years, but we both feel we can't take care of them as well as we did in the past.

Mary Ann - On Thursday this week, I have an appointment with my ENT doctor, to look down at my non-functioning vocal cord.  While I'm there, I'm going to ask him to check my hearing aids, and see if he can adjust them for me.  As I mentioned before, these belonged to AJ, so they actually aren't right for me.  If they can't be adjusted, I'll probably think seriously about getting new ones.

Beverly - I hope we hear from you today?  I think I asked you a question in my last message here, but can't recall what it was?

Jenny - I hope we get some good news updates on your Dad and Michele?

Patricia - I'm going to leave you a message in the Pet folder, later today.  Right now I have to sign off, because Sandy is here to do her weekly wash, and weekly visit.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, I would never have bought a cat had not Annie wanted one when she came here.  She was surprised when I told her she could get one.  I'd have loved it if she got a calico, but she brought home a marmalade cat.  Kendrick is probably more company for me than I am for him.  I wish I could/would spend time playing with him, but I do manage to sit in the living room and talk to him sometimes.  At times he seems to look at me and beg for attention, and I'd like to be able to get on the floor and roll balls at him.  He is getting too old to play with toys.  I don't bend well and Tom doesn't either, but he is the one who will take care of the litter.  Kendrick does not go outside - if I can help it!

Marilyn, I'm sure  your ENT person will be horrified, but not surprised, to find you are using AJ's hearing aids.  I think where I got these last aids is a chain but I don't know how widespread - name is AVA - but I paid $1,000 less than I did at the other place and I like them a lot more.  Improvements in technology have been made since I got the last ones, but this audiologist seems to be more on the ball than the other one.  You would be pleasantly surprised by ones for you alone.

I just got up from a nap and Kendrick did not accompany me and I'm not quite awake yet, either.  It is still dreary out, however, no new snow or precip.

I'm starting to get some tax stuff in the mail, but I have several that I will have to print out.  My main problem is that I have two companies that have me blocked and I'll have to contact them to "set me free".

Marilyne - I drink Ensure Plus which is 350 calories. At first I had a hard time getting used to it but now it seems like a treat. It is sweet and maybe that's why I like it.  :)

Maryc - If you should get a cat, be sure there is nothing like D-Con in the basement. Years ago we lost our cat because one of our neighbors used D-Con to get rid of mice and our kitty found one of the dead ones. The vet tried to save him but couldn't.

I agree that anyone wanting a pet should consider an older one.

Not much going on here. Time for Antiques Road Show.

Have a good night all.

Coming in to say "goodnight"! We have been watching the LSU / Clemson game and it is definitely time to head off to bed.

We had a Bobcat cross the two driveways across the street this afternoon and since we have a camera out front we captured it and shared it with the neighbors.  I feel badly for these poor wild animals....we have moved into their area and they have no where to go.  If I knew how I would post the video.

MARILYNE, I hope the ENT can adjust the hearing aids a bit, but I know they are fitted for the person that got them first! Hahahha Thank you for asking about my Dad and Michele.  I got a picture of my Dad's wound on his arm today and I could not believe how good it looked.  He was to the doc this morning and the6 unwrapped it and said it was good now and they would not wrap it anymore.  It has been three weeks since he fell and ripped it open and he sure did a great job of healing....I am so thankful.  Michele unfortunately came down with this cold bug that so many have right now.....she has surprisingly managed to stay pretty healthy throughout her chemo and radiation time, in spite of the kids coming home with a few bugs.  This cold really got her though, like it has to most people that caught it.  She will go for her PET scan in early February and of course she is hopeful she will get a clean report....positive thoughts and prayer for that🙏🙏🙏

BEVERLY, how sad to read that your kitty died from Deacon....that is the danger of using those type of things to control rodents.  It is so easy for some other animals come across it.

BURRR 🥶🥶 PATRICIA .....keep warm!

Pleasant dreams to all....

Good Morning,

Jenny, a bobcat "lived" around the complex pond at one time.  I saw it go across my back yard.  We've also had coyotes...and this is in the middle of town!
So glad to read about your Dad's arm; I've been concerned about him.
Hate that Michelle has had to deal with a "bug" in the midst of all her treatments.  Hope she gets over that asap.

Marilyne,  I didn't realize anyone could use hearing aids that had been fit for someone else. Wishing you Good Luck at the audiologist. I need to get mine checked but weather and annoying health issues have kept me from making an appointment.

I'm finally beginning to catch up on boat watching.  Had to "re-wind' to catch the "parade" on the river this morning and am glad I finally figured out the numbers mentioned in the posts about sightings refer to the time posted at the top of the video - not the numbers that show up as I'm re-winding.
Also watched a "utility vessel" on the Algonac cam going across to the houses on the island (?) - along with a flock of ducks floating downstream with the tide...until the ferry came along and they all flew away.

Yesterday was gloomy and drizzly. Today is gloomy and foggy.  I'm giving myself permission to stay in gown/robe and be lazy,,,um "leisurely".  ;D

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

Mary Ann

I had a 9:15 am appointment to get my hair cut this morning and while I was dressing, the phone rang; it was the Salon to tell me the stylist was ill but they had a 9 am appt if I could make it.  I took that appointment, Tom was happy because he prefers them early and we made it on time.  While I got my hair cut, he called Jan to let her know we'd be there earlier.  The upshot is this stylist is there every Tuesday so I switched to her at 9 am every five weeks; the stylist I had for 30+ years had me come in at 8:45.    Jan and her mother got to the restaurant where we all had breakfast and we were glad we all could get together.  Next week Jan will fly to CA to meet her new grandson.  But my next appointment is inFeb and she'll be back by then.

We got home about 11:30 and I've been on  the computer since.  All of the posts tell me you all have been been busy.

Patricia, weather sure is funny - up one day and down the next.  We're holding steady at 32 and 33 degrees.  As long as there is no precipitation, it doesn't bother me.

Jenny, I'm sorry to hear of Michele's "bug", but you're right, kids bring all sorts of illnesses home from school.  I don't think I've seen a bobcat around here, but I saw some different animals at Norm's in Florida.  A river otter, for instance.  I'm glad to hear your dad's arm is mending.

Marilyn, I wonder, too, whether the ENT can adjust your "borrowed" hearing aid.

Callie, this is the first chance I've had to watch boats, so I'll do that now.  I had a good breakfast so I don't think I'll need lunch for a couple of hours - it is now 12:15 pm.  I can wait.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Mary Ann and Callie - I see my ENT every six months, for issues other than hearing problems.  However, last time I was there, I told him I was wearing AJ's old hearing aids.  He laughed, and told me it was extremely common for hearing aids to get passed around the family, when the original owner gets new ones, or other reasons.  He said that often, they work really well, and it certainly saves the new "owner" lots of money.  But of course they are not as good as new ones.  He did recommend that I have these checked and adjusted, but I didn't go back to have that done.  Now I definitely will when I see him on Thursday!

Jenny - good to hear that your Dad's arm has healed so well. Sorry Michele has a cold, but impossible to avoid them, when you have school age children.  The Roto-Rooter guy that was here for so many hours on Saturday, had a horrible cold, and was spreading germs all over the place!  After he left AJ and I were taking about which one of us would be the first to catch "the plumber cold"!  Neither of us have it, so far!  (Knocking on wood here!)
We were also watching the LSU/Clemson playoff game!  Happy to see LSU win!

We have a regular Critter Parade, every night on our outside cameras.  Lots of Bobcats here also, as well as coyotes, skunks, possums, and of course raccoons!   Others in our neighborhood have seen mountain lions (cougar) on their cameras, but so far we haven't seen one, and I hope we don't!

Beverly - I used to be devoted to Antiques Roadshow, on TV, but I've lost track of it in recent years.  I was in the antique business for years, so I really enjoyed the show, even though they feature high-end and rare antiques, which I didn't have.  I dealt only in made in USA kitchen items from the 1930's, through '50's . . .  glassware, china, dinnerware, jadite, cookie jars, tablecloths, etc.

Mary Ann - glad you settled on a new girl for your haircuts.
I remember that you hadn't been too happy with your last few cuts.  The gal who cuts my hair has become a friend over the years, and although I am sometimes unhappy with my haircut, I will stick with her as long as she keeps on working.  I look forward to seeing her every six weeks. She has lots of family drama going on, and we share some similar issues with our adult kids.

I hope we hear from Maryc and Jean, later today?

angelface555

Good morning, it was zero last night and one degree this morning, Quite a change from the nine days of minus 44-45. The snow we had yesterday has stopped with little accumulation.

The package due from Amazon didn't show. Now they say today through the sixteenth. This is the third package in a role that has been late. It's not Amazon but the USPS, which seems to be Amazon's new carriers instead of UPS. I don't know who to complain to, Amazon or the Post Office.

I'd switch, but Amazon through Prime charges no shipping, and Alaskan freight charges more than 23% what the lower 48 sees. And when orders initially call for five to seven days transit to here, an extra three days is not very welcome.

I bet if several places deleted freight charges to here, they'd receive a substantial profit at least initially. The trouble is with the insurance companies. Anytime freight has to go over water, such as here, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico, shipment costs almost triple.

I know from my time in retail that the average price of an item, divided by quantity and shipment costs, has an extra ten percent added. You can use that ratio to understand an items' wholesale price or very close to it.

Hi Marilyne! I would have gone over the area with germ-killing cleansers after he left. My four day cold earlier this month was brief but debilitating. I haven't been outside my apartment since the beginning of the minus weather but know I'll probably catch something once I'm out and about again. The buses are like planes in that all the colds and other germs remain in a small enclosed area.

Enough of my complaining.  ::)

I hope everyone is staying healthy or recovering. Flu has been especially bad worldwide this year.

Joy

Good afternoon.

I know I have been missing for a while.  Just too much going on.  Some medical issues .  It seems I just get over one problem and another shows up to take it's place.

I just wrote a long message over in the Soda Shoppe, so I won't go into any more details.

I am on the lazy side and not doing very much.  Right now have a big issue with sore feet.  But I have been using Shirley's remedy of soaking my feel in her Epsom salt solution , and I do think it is helping.

I just wanted to say Hello to every "bait and tackler" and do hope everyone is doing ok.

Next time I will do better.

Have a great afternoon and evening.  Stay warm, Patricia. Can't imagine those kind of temperatures.

Joy
BIG BOX

FlaJean

It is 70F degrees here and is supposed stay that way for a few more days.  Unusual weather.

Just got back from the grocery store a little while ago.  By the time I got everything put away and the meat in freezer bags, I feel exhausted.  I had one of those nights where I tossed and turned before I finally went to sleep after 3 am.

It was a little overcast but suddenly I see sun shining.  The air is warm and moist.  The Goldfinch is a regular visitor to the bird feeders as is the red bellied woodpecker.  He has a bright red head and a spot of red on his belly.  Sometimes the names of birds is confusing.  We have a lot of purple finches but their head is red and underside is a light rose color not purple at all.  Well, no one asked me to name the bird but if they did i wouldn't call it a "purple" finch.

As you can tell, I'm writing a lot of nonsense.  There isn't much going on and everything is nice and quiet.  I have a book that is more exciting than my life at present so I think I will go read it.😁.  But I'm not complaining as I like a quiet unexciting life.

Have a good day everyone!

Mary Ann

Jean, it's nice to hear from someone who has decent temperatures.  Marilyn lives in a warm area too, but several of us bear the cold.  Since I can't go anywhere unless Tom takes me, I don't mind the cold because I don't go out.  Oh, we're having a heat wave - we're up to 38 degrees and the last I looked it was 33.  I'll still stay inside!

Robin is due in a few minutes and I always have her start in the kitchen.  A piece broke in the dishwasher the other day and Tom has ordered a replacement.  I don't know if it has come yet but if it hasn't there may be dishes to wash.

I am going to miss the boats this winter but I think there may be some on the lower lakes.  It is the Soo locks that close so nothing will go up to Duluth or Superior unless they're already on Lake Superior.

Annie's birthday is Thursday and we are having a party for her Saturday.  Just family.  Her SO would be invited but he is very allergic to cats so does not come to family affairs, actually whether they're here or elsewhere.  Annie will be 24.  She's not a child anymore.

Marilyn, I think I'll be happy with this new stylist.  I seem to have worked myself up the ladder to the top stylists and they cost more.  But when I figure I have 10-12 cuts a year and buy a couple of bottles of shampoo, my hair care is not very expensive.  My hair is the problem, not the stylists.

I haven't been watching Antiques Roadshows myself because they're either reruns or composites of former programs.  I always enjoyed the programs when they were from different cities.

Jean, the purple finch and house finch are similar in color but the house finch is a bit smaller.  The first house finch I saw, I thought the bird had its throat cut, but my bird book set me straight.  I haven't had a feeder in years, which is why I enjoy your videos, Jean, but the seeds attracted mice, chipmunks and squirrels.

Joy, I'll go to SS to read your long piece, but take care of yourself!

Patricia, I think I'd complain first to Amazon, it was their change that has made deliveries slower.  If you don't get a response, then I'd go to the USPS.  I am sure your location - Alaska, not Fairbanks - has everything to do with it.

I know I've written a book again.  Sorry.

MaryAnn, I called the postal service, which was frustrating as I called the main branch, and evidently, we have three postal complexes serving various local areas. They said my package, which had been broken into three separate parts, arrived in Fairbanks this morning at 7:10 AM and will be delivered sometime today.

Their view is Amazon stating a day and time doesn't always live up to its actual physical arrival in Fairbanks. That may be but this is the third late package. I wish they'd stuck with UPS that have their own centers and airplanes.

We just had a good shaking from an earthquake. I'll have to check how Anchorage did.

Patricia - I looked at my US Gov.Earthquake info page, and it said the quake was centered in Ester, AK, and was a 4.0. If you don't have this link, here it is - https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/

Thanks Marilyne, Ester is on a ridge just west of my building and eleven miles away.

Marilyne, Good to know what the ENT said about hearing aides.  Hope yours (plural?  ;) ) can be adjusted when you see him.

Patricia, Just for you  ;D

Flajean, Red-bellied woodpeckers come to my feeder in the summer but they're not the same as the Redheaded ones.  In addition to not having the red spot on their bellies, their heads are solid red clear down their necks. The heads on the red-bellied are only red on the top.  Downy and Hairy woodpeckers also come; the only way I can tell them apart is by the size; the Downies are slightly smaller.
My old feeder that had a seed tray on one side with a bar that shut off the seeds if a squirrel got on it - wore out.  Thought it would be fun to have one that opened on both sides - but I was wrong.
Discovered one of the squirrels was agile enough to jump from the ground to the top of the squirrel baffle and grab hold of the feeder.  So I stopped putting out sunflower seeds and just have safflower seeds out there now.
I've noticed there are fewer birds so need to get a replacement.

Joy,  hope you feel better soon.  I discovered Lavender scented Epsom Salts and have enjoyed a good foot soak with them.

Have gone to get the mail and put out the trash barrel.  Now off to read a while....

Thanks Callie,  :D

My packages just arrived, finally! Security brought them up from downstairs for me. I had two books, two commercial-sized sheet pans, four silicone baking sheets for the sheet pans, one digital kitchen scale, and one Lodge brand porcelain enamel on cast iron, six-quart dutch oven.

As I'm still downsizing and have gotten rid of my ancient baking and cookware, I'm working from a long harbored list and slowly purchasing new items that I will use for my meal prepping.

I looked to see if the Interior had any woodpeckers as while they're all over the lower portion of the state, I wasn't sure about locally.  According to my search engine, "Woodpeckers are a unique and interesting group of birds that occupy much of the forested regions of Alaska. Seven species occur in the state are the Northern Flicker, red breasted sap sucker, yellow bellied sap sucker, and hairy, downy, three-toed and black backed woodpeckers."

I guess if you live in the midst of a humongous forest, you'll have woodpeckers.

Patricia, thanks for Maxine.  She is a treasure.

I saved the link that Marilyn posted.  I used to have a link and I'm not sure it is the same as this one, but this one gives me information I want.   I'm glad your Amazon order arrived.  I find that "Amazon called" often on our front porch.  Hardly any of it is for me.

I'm sorry about the earthquake and I hope you had no damage.

Everyone must be asleep as there are no posts since Jackie's at 1 am my time.

I had a scare last night when I couldn't find one of my hearing aids.  I had gotten them from my bedroom to wear so I could hear "Finding Your Roots" on TV.  Both needed new batteries and I put a battery in one aid, then could not find the other.  I panicked and hunted all over around my chair because that was where it would be.  It got so bad that I got down on the floor to look under the chair.  Then I could not get up.  What to do?  I was sure Tom was in bed, but I could hardly move where I was and I didn't want to spend the night there.  Tom turns his phone off at night except for a few numbers and I knew he would get my call.  He came up and the way I was sitting, it was hard for him to get me up and it was like dead weight.  We kind of tore the place apart trying to find the aid, but nothing turned up.  I went to bed shortly after that and while I was cleaning my face, I felt something in my ear - and there was the hearing aid.  Of all places we looked, neither of us suspected it was in my ear.  A big WHEW!

I know now that I absolutely, positively cannot get down on the floor because I am unable to get up by myself.  The benefit of growing old!

I'll be back later.

... that sounds just like the times i was looking everywhere for my reading glasses, and you will never guess where they were, of course i was wearing them and another time i was hunting for another pair, only to put them on over the reading glasses i was already wearing...oh well, guess it gets to us all eventually...

Marilyne

Mary Ann - sounds like you had an exciting time last night, what with thinking you had lost your hearing aid, and then being unable to get up off the floor!  Oh, the frustrations of growing old! How fortunate that Tom was there, and eventually you were back or your feet. (or back in your chair!)  As for the hearing aid . . . a similar thing happened to AJ, with one of his aids.  We searched and searched all over the house, chair cushions, floors, counter tops, and even shined a flashlight into the toilets!  Finally found in his ear, where it had been the whole time!  He was so mad at himself, but you have to maintain a sense of humor, because things are not going to get any better!  ;D

Jackie - I've done the same as you, with my reading glasses or computer glasses. Looked and searched and practically been in tears, only to discover that I was wearing them!

We're still having our warm weather—73F, but starting next week it looks like some winter temperatures are on the way, at least that is what the Weather Channel is reporting.

Mary Ann, I'm glad you didn't lose your hearing aid and that Tom helped you up.  Before Christmas I got down on the floor to arrange some things on the hearth and couldn't get up.  I needed something higher than the stone hearth so I crawled over to the sofa and managed to pull myself up.

A few years ago my son sent us a nifty little bench from Home Depot for working outside.  You could kneel on it and pull yourself up by the handles or you could turn it over and sit on it.  I'm thinking maybe I'll get one for the inside.  Larry uses it outside.  He can still get up but I notice it is getting harder for him also.

This warm weather has started me thinking about flowers and fertilizing my azaleas but it is too soon.  I know we are surely getting some colder weather soon.

Well, I have a few things I need to do so I better get busy.

Tomereader1

Dallas -- partly cloudy and humid, 64 degrees on my front porch.  Showers expected later, 20% chance.  It's 11:46 A.M. here as I post this.  So good morning to all here.  I never can understand the times shown on posts, like WesternJoan's says 5:10 PM, Today.  Well, does that mean in actuality "yesterday" at 5:10 PM?  Not that it matters in the scheme of things, but boy, confusing to older minds, that sometimes have trouble with what day it is!! LOL :-[

Mary Ann

#16438
Tomereader, it could be that your clock is faulty.  Joan's time read 12:10 here, which was the correct time.  Your message read 12:50 pm; I am in the ET zone.  It is 1:17 pm here on my shelf clock.  You might contact Bubble to see what can be done.

Yesterday when Tom, Jan and I were at coffee we made mention of people hunting for their glasses only to find them on their head.  Marilyn, AJ and I were no different with our hearing aids.  It ever I can't find them again, my ear is the first place I'll look.  As for my being unable to get up from the floor, I was in a small area but if I had been on my knees, I might have been able to wiggle over to my chair and pull myself up but I could not move.  I will not intentionally get on the floor again.  There are certain things I know I can't do such as picking up the cat; he is too heavy for me.  I do not try to pick up the twins; of course, they are getting bigger.

MarsGal, I saw two ships this morning, one through the Soo and another at Port Huron.

Tom is going to Holland to help Mary celebrate her birthday, then tomorrow is Annie's actual birthday, but the family is getting together here on Saturday for a party - cake and ice cream.

I have two words that almost always come out wrong when I type them - out for our (and vice versa) and thing and think.  Why does that happen?  I see it in others messages too.  I changed mine today.

Mary Ann
