Naturally, I had to watch beyond the end and saw some pretty cute kitten antics, even a couple that Kendrick might go for.

I wish Farrah did! She plays with straws or the toy mouse attached to the curtain rods by a long rubber string and not much else or that frequently.

I believe many here have cat or dog allowing you to "share"?   ;D

This cat is certainly the MOST BEAUTIFUL cat in the world!

Some bengals have lovely eyes and coats. However, they are loud and sometimes destructive!

Mary Ann

My half-Bengal is nothing like the one pictured.  He does disappear when there are strangers around, he does not cuddle, and he is not destructive or loud.  He is a good cat.

Bubble, I don't think the dogs or maybe even cats understand the word share..tis every man for himself when it comes to getting bed space here.

5 Ways You're Accidentally Enabling Your Cat's Bad Behavior

"Cats usually only do things that are in their own best interest. While this self-serving attitude often earns them a reputation for being "untrainable", understanding how cats work is exactly how you'll train them. For instance, if you want your cat to stop scratching the side of the couch, you'll need to provide an alternative that'll be irresistible to your cat. She'll stop scratching the couch as long as her need to scratch is met with a better option, like the perfect scratching post. The key is to lay the groundwork that'll allow your cat to decide for herself that her bad behavior isn't benefiting her as much as a good one."

Here's a sad and troubling news story about two Golden Retrievers, that we saw on our evening news last night.  A local couple left their dogs with a Pet sitting service when they went on vacation for a week.  (rover.com) Apparently, the dogs were sedated/drugged, the entire time the couple were gone.  They returned a day early, and went to get the dogs, and found them in a drugged state.  Stories like this are so infuriating, because you know that the company will not get charged, and will probably open again under a new name.   I haven't seen any follow-up on this story, either on the News channel or in the paper.

Mary Ann

Marilyn, how sad.  Not that any pets should be sedated, but goldens are such gentle dogs, it is hard to see why anyone would drug them.  The video showed them to be such lovely dogs.

Mary Ann

Amy

Marilyn, that is so sad. I hope they get charged to the hilt. Here in Ontario the rule have changed finally  and now the fines are a lot steeper, not steep enough for me but it is a start. We had a Golden and they are such a passive breed, not a mean bone in their body at least with ours.

In YouTube news videos from NYC and Chicago, there are stories of dog walkers and pet sitters ripping the owners off, stealing, and selling whatever they can get their hands on while ignoring the dogs completely.

I left my cats once in the mid-eighties while I spent nine days hospitalized for surgery. Even though the proprietors were vetted by Pet Pride, they still were kept in small chicken wire cages with the owners saying they were let out and played with twice daily.

I was not pleased and would never have one it except I was in the hospital and my sister took them to the pet sitters. They had an hourly and a daily rate but while it seemed expensive at the time, I don't remember the amount.

From Facebook, FDJ is a foster dad for over 20 years. He is a permanent foster dad of older cats and also fosters pregnant cats and kittens for adoption in western Washington,

"Is it time?"

Mercury went over the Bridge yesterday morning at home, peacefully, using Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice, Inc. to assist in his crossing on his favorite heater pad.

One hard question pet owners have to eventually face is asking "Is it time" to let them go. I'd like to talk about that.
There were quite a few comments on yesterday's post about Mercury's last day from people who have made that choice recently and will be soon. I've been through this fairly often over the past couple years. I lost Tabby, Sabby, Kougra, & Myia within a one month period two years ago. Tabby likely had a brain tumor, Sabby had toxicity due to an abscess the vet missed, Kougra from heart & liver failure, Myia from her intestinal track shutting down and now Mercury from kidney failure. Few year prior was Socks from a stroke and Keaira & Sheba from liver failure.

The hardest part about the question is putting your pet before yourself. We all have a selfish aspect to our personality and we don't want to let them go. Stepping aside to make it about your pet and not you isn't easy but it's probably the second best gift you could give them (the best was giving them a loving home). You may not realize it yet if it's your first time but it'll also be the best gift you can give yourself.

Here is something that is very important to understand: Your pet does not fear natural death due to age or illness. They're not afraid to let go. So it is better to help them over a day early so-to-speak than a day late. Another way to explain it is that if you know they aren't going to get better, you don't want to wait until their very last moments when they've ran out of good days just to extend your time with them. Do whatever your comfortable with to extend their time with you as long as there's good days to be had.

People will tell you that you'll know when it's time. The best way I can describe it is that it's when your heart breaks.
One thing that'll help you know when it's time is to keep track of their good days & bad days using whatever metric works best for you. I used a calendar with a 1-10 scale and then starting tracking if his current day was better or worse than the previous day how many days that continued.

When you know it's time, make the appointment - and stick to it. Mercury took a turn for the better just hours before his appointment, getting up several times to eat some more food and he wasn't falling over while walking. Jess & I both were second guessing ourselves (and you will likely do the same) if we were too early but honestly, even a couple days early is still better than even one day too late. Mercury wasn't going to get better. His really good days were almost always followed by several really bad days. I'm sure that after, you will thank yourself for sending them out on a high note. I miss the hell out of Mercury, but I am at peace with how he went.

Everyone grieves differently but if you like to talk about your pets, talk about them. Talk about your favorite memories and if you're there to help your friend through this, just listen even if you heard the story a thousand times before.
Before I end this with my favorite memory of Mercury, I'd like to talk a bit about the medical aspect of euthanasia and knowing this was helpful for me. The typical method used involves two injections. The first one relaxes them and basically puts them in a state of rest - many animals fall into a sleep state here. The second injection is an overdose of anesthesia & it basically turns their brain off. It's not painful, just a sensation of things getting fuzzier and fuzzier (from my own experience with anesthesia), and then nothing. It doesn't force their heart to stop beating, the brain stops sending signals to the heart to beat. This part of the brain is basically on autopilot and it's not something your pet can control - so if it turns off and stops telling the heart to beat, the part of their brain that thinks & is self-aware has already shut down.

My favorite memory of Mercury was way back when he was a kitten, probably 3 or 4 months old. I was laying in bed under the covers and he was sitting next to me in the middle of the bed. I had my knees raised to make "Mount Knee" and was trying to get him to jump up to the top. Several minutes of beckoning and he just sat there, looking. I gave up and the exact moment I dropped my knees, Mercury jumped! But my knees weren't there any more and he sailed gracefully in an arch up & over and right off the edge of the bed out of sight.

That is a very patient cat to allow being dressed like that. Almost looks as if it enjoyed being in costume.
