Marilyne

Good Afternoon everyone!  A beautiful day here, but I was fooled into thinking it was cooler than it is, and started to go for a walk.   I quickly changed my mind and turned around and came home.  This morning it was only 55 degrees when I got up at 6:30.  That is really cold, for a California Summer morning, but it felt good!  I guess I was fooled into thinking it would stay pleasant, but it went right back up, and is now 85, at 2:00 pm.   Our high point is usually around 4:00, so it will likely go to 89 or higher.

Callie and Jenny - I've heard so many good things about Gladys over the years.  I joined Senior Net, way back in 1998, but we never posted in any of the same folders. I remember back then, people talking about what a fun person she was, and now I wish I had made a point of getting to know her.

Callie - We also have Campbell's YES soup here. I just tried it for the first time today for lunch.  It's called Sipping Soup, and you are supposed to open and microwave it, while still in the plastic container.  I could NOT open it, and had to find AJ to figure it out. Since I had forgotten to "shake well before opening", I decided to pour it into a pan and heat it on the stove.  It tasted okay - Butternut Squash and Sweet Potato.  However, I doubt I would buy it again, because I don't like containers that are hard to open. Also a little pricey for 8 ounces.

Denver

JACKIE, I certainly have looked at the area you currently live in but also could not remember for sure that it is the Channel that surrounds the coast line there.  It is such a beautiful area and I sure wish I could have visited you there. I see it is directly south of Bob's cousin that lives in Bristol.  A one hour and 40 minute drive that we sure would have enjoyed driving.  I sure hope one day to return to the UK, and also visit Ireland and Scotland. I have been reminiscing and trying to remember so many of the names of those that we had in our group so many years ago.

MARILYNE, Gladys was indeed a delightful lady.  I joined in 1997 and have attended several Bashes that were so much fun.  It was nice to be able to meet so many of the folks that we felt like we already knew.  You are definitely one of the ones that I wish I could meet some day😘. Your temperatures are almost exactly the same as ours.  It is 83 now with a bit of a cloud cover.

CALLIE, so happy the lady was pleasant and did a good job of trying to help you.  Too bad she could not fix your problem.

It is time to get busy and fix some dinner.  I am not the least bit hungry and nothing sounds good at all😩

Have a good evening.

So much time has gone by but all of us who knew Gladys still miss her. Can't think if she even was on S AnD F or just for years on Seniornet. I never did get to meet her but we talked a lot as she was from the same area of UK that I am from. didn't come to the US until in the late 60s I believe. Was about 10 years older than myself. I know was long married and her children grown when they came. We were going to the same places in Manchester at the same time. Dancing.even the same pubs and restaurants . Lots of other places. How I wish I had known her back than. She did go to all the bashes. Her husband has passed.
I have gone back to Uk to family a lot but I think most of Gladys had come to US so I could fill her in. Meant to go this year but not a chance.

Finely cooled down here today. been raining of and on so my yard has not been cut yet this week.
SIL brought over from his garden lots of cucs again and cherry tomatoes. So all day been making pickles and lots of tomato sauce. Making a pizza at the moment.
The 90s weather was beginning to get to me but today feel great. Just wish could jump in car and go visit or take a trip. But trouble with the Restaurants and bars here and so Governor may be going back to #3. Silly people. At least they are closing down the people who are not staying  to what he want. 2nd time the will take licenses away. Good thought. This think will go one until next years even if everyone does things right. If not will go on for years. Health worried now as to what will happen when Flu shot time comes in Oct. for the shots  That is when I get mine. Going to be a mess not knowing to much.
Time to relax for the night.

"Beverly, Marilyne, Sandy and Jackie, I apologize if my post about swallowing was insensitive to your issues.  I in no way meant to downplay the seriousness of your conditions."  (Callie)

No,  I am glad that we got talking about swallowing issues.
I thought that I was the only one...  Swallowing
issues can be very scary until we figure out
how to deal with them,  so it is good to hear
from other  people about theirs.

You have nothing to apologize for !

I see our " swallowing issues " club, is getting larger...well its one club where our memberships will never expire..Oh the joys of this ageing process of ours, NOT.....if its not one thing, its another...

*****************************************************************

Well i am now counting the days, soon be counting the hours till i am well away from here and heading back to what i call home ( a tad of normality )...I am betting my first night there in bed i will have the best nights sleep i have had since losing my Richard coming on 16 months ago...well that's if our soaring heatwave doesn't prevent me from sleeping..temps are due into the 90's for that week..20 F, hotter than the South, where i am now..

Marilyne

Patricia - thank you for the telling us about the salmonella outbreak.  I don't cook from scratch much anymore, and don't have any onions.  However, my daughter-in-law, cooks a lot, and they love onions.  I plan to send the link to her, as well as my two daughters and my cousin.  I wonder why we didn't hear about this on the news today or earlier in the week?  I see that California, has the second  highest number of cases, after Oregon. :(

angelface555

Marilyne, after I saw this I checked mine and they were Thompson so I had to throw them away. I get a weekly email from USDA because of my allergies and want to stay safe and away from processed foods. I don't why it doesn't make the news.

Denver

MARILYNE and PATRICIA, the warning is all over our news.  The onions are out of Cali and there are 13 states involved, including Colorado.

JACKIE, I am so happy for you as you anticipate this move.

Another beautiful morning here.....but we are headed for another hot day and it will continue to be in the 90's the rest of the. O Ming week.  We sure could use some rain as it is getting mighty crispy looking out there😩

Thinking about our east coasters as the hurricane is making landfall today in Florida.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Jenny, it's in Canada too!

We've had off and on rainshowers for ten weeks along with wind, drifting, slanted rain and T-storms with rolling thunder and lightening. We've had a flood watch for the valley for thirty days but now they say it might reach the urban areas.

Then we had two days of sunshine but it's smokey due to Asian and Siberian forest fires.

angelface555

Good morning everyone! There is a new Brainteaser in the house!

Shirley

Well, Patricia, I made potato salad tonight because I already had hard boiled some eggs & thought I had everything I needed.... but had to throw my 2 onions away because they lost the stickers off them & KS is one of the states that already had a problem. BUT, I have a big pot of chives out in the berm so cut a handful off & chopped them up, tasted pretty good. Thanks for the warning, heard it from you first but now finally hit the news!

Just had the 3rd phone call from AT&T to confirm they come in the morning. All the same warnings, not sure why they are so busy calling ME when it isn't easy to contact any business these days. Seems they all use the excuse "because of the virus...."  I dread changes so will glad to have this over.

My mother had a swallowing problem, but she had a goiter that choked her. By the time it got big enough to really need having it removed, she thought she was too old for the surgery. Used to be a lot of people had that surgery & rarely hear about it now. My brother-in-law also has to have his "stretched" regularly, but he had throat cancer & massive surgery so that's what caused his. That would scare me so sincere sympathy for all that have it. For sure we learn about & hear about so much more because of the internet, good & bad.

What a fun person Gladys was. I was learning to do animations with instructions from Glenn Curtis at that time, so made a couple animated birthday cards for her. Sadly they went away when that computer bowed out. I forgot everything he taught me but still have a couple of the "morphs" I did of family members.

Jackie, hope your move turns out for the best and that you make wonderful friends.

Heading to bed early tonight, hardly ever get more than 5 hours sleep at night because of cats and must get up early tomorrow with the service man coming "between 9 & 11".  I've gotten into a habit of getting up & having breakfast any time of wee hours & go back to sleep for a couple more hours. Sure hurts when I gotta be dressed early!  :-\

You are all firmly tucked up inside your beds, i am up and about, woke up for a couple of through the night bladder emptying's, got up 4.30 am, on the computer just about going to put the kettle on for my first cup of tea of the day...
It can get mighty lonely in here this time of my morning..

Shirley..
..the way i am doing this i am taking a big gamble, not sold yet but, hand on heart i know this is the right thing to be doing..God has answered my prayer and has guided me, given me the answer...brought me to my senses...that i do know,... i shall say no more....Just Thank you God..

Counting the days, soon be counting the hours.... i will soon be entering the final chapter of my book, my life...the book that none of us know its ending, nor when we will reach it...

Did you hear about Canadians fortifying their border to keep us out? Now that's ironic...maybe they need to build a wall?

"Since March, the U.S.-Canada border has been closed to all but essential traffic in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus. But Americans being Americans, they are flouting the new regulations in the pursuit of their usual summer fun.According to NPR, "Canadian border patrol has effectively prevented caravans of Americans" from crossing the border. Most are arriving by sailboats and luxury yachts.

Those crossing the border have often told officials that they are heading to Alaska to circumvent the new regulations. But because so many Americans are using the so-called "Alaska loophole," authorities have increased restrictions.

One reason Americans are being spotted is that Canadian boaters are using technology to monitor them. With the requirement that all passenger boats have to be equipped with tracking devices to help prevent weather-related accidents, anyone with an internet connection can monitor border-crossings and identify vessels by type and country of origin.https://tinyurl.com/y3xtjmta

FlaJean

We've been having plenty of rain lately.  This hurricane will be missing us, but I nervously watch the weather until November when hurricane season is over.

Thanks for the onion warning, Patricia.  I don't use many fresh onions as they don't really agree with either of us, but I had recently bought one so threw it away.  I do use occasionally dehydrated onion flakes that come in a jar or sometimes onion powder.  It is probably a good idea to regularly check for recall items, but I don't often think of it.

Since very early in our marriage, we always had a summer garden.  I never knew much about gardening but Larry's dad always had a large vegetable garden because they had a big family.  When our oldest was just a baby, we lived in an upstairs apartment and the owners (downstairs) owned a vacant lot next door.  They gave Larry permission to have a garden.  After that we always had some kind of garden even if it was just tomatoes and cucumbers and my favorite green beans.  Our last garden was several years ago in Ocala where we had a raised garden.  After my mother passed, we gave it up with just the two of us.  But I was really tempted this year to get a couple of tomato plants---maybe next year.

Speaking of tomatoes, I got several delicious tomatoes from Walmart for $1.79 a Lb.  Best tomatoes I've had in quite a while and were like home grown.

We haven't talked to our neighbor lately as they are on self-quarantine because of their son (lives at home) having Covid-19.  We also had several fireman at the local fire station also with coronavirus.  We have been pretty lucky in our area so far.  Walmart is very strict about wearing masks, but Publix super market is not and my son-in-law said only about half the customers were wearing masks Sat.

I hope everyone is doing OK.  Jackie, you will soon be on your adventure and my prayers go with you.  Have a good day everyone.

FlaJean

Patricia, we were posting at the same time so I just read your post about Canada.  My oldest daughter lives in B.C. about an hour from Vancouver and she was telling me about that.  Canadians are kind of upset about the US citizen trickery of using that ploy.

angelface555

Jean, I live less than 100 miles from the Canadian border, and Alaskans have always felt solidarity with Canada as we are physically separated from Washington and other states. Some smaller border communities even shared the same schools up until the nineteen seventies. The weather, terrain, and BC people are very similar to Alaskans.

I've even identified more with Canada than I have with the rest of the US, which seems like an entirely different country. In the last few years, they've suddenly needed passports, which came as a shock to many here used to going back and forth. And now since March, the border has been locked down. But today is the first I've heard of this scam. Alaskans aren't too happy with it either!

Marilyne

Already one o'clock here . . . I don't know what happened to the morning?  The only thing I accomplished, was to take a shower and get my hair washed.  I have a dermatologist appointment today, and I know he is going to burn off a bunch of spots around my hairline, so I like to make sure my hair is clean.  I prefer to go a couple of days after an appointment before I get those burned areas wet.  This is the first time I've been to a doctor since February.  AJ went to see him last week, and said he and the staff are wearing both N95 masks and shields, as well as gloves and hair coverings.  I just hope that with my hard of hearing ears, that I can understand him through all those layers!

Jean - I hope your neighbors are doing okay, coping with their son's Covid-19.  I certainly hope that they don't get it from him, but it's maybe inevitable, what with the fact that they have to handle his food, dishes, laundry, et al.  It's such an incredibly contagious and unpredictable virus!

Patricia and Jean - I'm curious as to why Americans are so anxious to get into Canada, that they are willing to go to sneaky means to cross the border??  Californians love to vacation in BC or Alberta, but it is well known here that the popular attractions are totally closed down this summer, including hotels, campgrounds, etc.  I read that Vancouver and Victoria, are both closed to visitors.  Lake Louise/Banff, in the Canadian Rockies, is a popular destination, but the hotels and tourist attractions/sightseeing tours, are closed.  Also, the Calgary Stampede, and other popular summer rodeos in Alberta, have been cancelled.
So I guess all of these would-be vacationers, will have to move on up to Alaska! Sorry Patricia! ha ha :D

MarsGal

Marilyne, some of those anxious to get back into Canada own property there. I know of at least one who was really bummed out when the ferry at Algonic had to stop running. He could see his place across the river, but couldn't get there. I can see one ferry parked on the Canada side, but I have no idea where the other one went.

Did anyone see the accident and damage to Florence Spirit in mid-July? The second one is the one I saw but it looks like others recorded it too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRvy0SR-Pr4

Paul Murray did his usual nice drone shot of Florence Spirit as she headed out onto Lake Huron on her way to Sturgeon Bay for repairs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM9_DNXaZ0E

Found this interesting article which has some info about the accident as well as the lakers in general. https://www.thescubanews.com/2020/07/30/the-collision-between-freighters-alanis-and-florence-spirit-in-the-welland-canal/

Today, the chatters reported that the big storm on Lake Huron and surrounds generated hale and a tornado warning for the Canada side. Someone reported that a friend thought he/she saw a water spout.

We will start getting some of the hurricane rain this evening with heavier rain overnight and tomorrow. Needless to say, George's cats will be on their own tomorrow.

Hope everyone got to watch the astronauts splash down yesterday afternoon. The recovery was quick and interesting.

Hiking in Alaska from Alaska Public Media,

"A 71-year-old man, known to be an avid runner, was carried off Kodiak's Pillar Mountain in an ambulance Sunday after a bear attack. Kodiak police say he was jogging on a trail in an open area near a gravel pit.

He had a cell phone and was able to call for help, said Lt. Francis de la Fuente. The call came in at 11:35 a.m. Help arrived in about 15 minutes, but de la Fuente said it was difficult to reach the man.

Guided by his voice, they hiked down a steep incline about a half mile from the road.

"Luckily medics had a gurney with a big wheel, but had to be assisted, of course, by multiple people," de la Fuente said.

The rescue team had to use a tow rope to pull the man up to an ambulance, which rushed him to Kodiak Providence Island Medical Center.

"Everybody was exhausted," de la Fuente said, "but they did their job."

De la Fuente said it's not clear what prompted the attack. Possibly, the runner surprised the bear or maybe it was defending a deer carcass or some other food.

Dave Zimmerman said the runner was his father, Don Zimmerman, owner of Sutliff Ace Hardware store in Kodiak.

He said his father didn't have time to be afraid. The bear came out of nowhere. It attacked, retreated and returned.

He was able to spray it with bear spray, said Dave Zimmerman.

He suffered a bite in the thigh, a puncture wound in his calf and a fracture in his forearm from a bite, Zimmerman said.

He was still hospitalized Monday, but is improving and expected to make a complete recovery.

Zimmerman said his father has run the same stretch of trail for 40 years and never encountered a bear before.

On Sunday, wildlife officials remained on scene to investigate. Efforts to track the bear were hampered by thick brush in the area. In all, three Kodiak police officers, a state trooper and two wildlife troopers were on scene, as well as a number of medics.

De la Fuente said the ground search was suspended later Sunday afternoon, but not before two volunteers with drones, Carl Royall and Father Frank Reiter, a Catholic Priest, searched the area for signs of the bear without success.

In the meantime, signs went up to warn hikers to be on alert for bears.

"Everybody wants to hike," said de la Fuente, "But hike with a partner. Make noise. Be cautious, because there are bears that are hungry out there."'

Been up and about since just turned 4.am, had my first mug of tea, taken a shower, but was busy, busy before and will be just as busy now after...My friend and her gardener friend are coming early tomorrow to finish off the branches to the side which are now touching and fanning the living room windows...there is furniture to go to new homes so coming with trailer..Cant believe i am parting with expensive or newly bought items ( giving away for free ) wont fit in...but i am only taking furniture that has a meaning to me, the furniture that Richard and i bought for starting up our forever home almost 20  years ago...these are the furniture items that have history...
Cant wait to get far away from here...as far away as possible God Willing...If at all there is one thing i will miss it will be the feel of healthy sea breeze, although only visited their a handful of times..

Defrosting the fridge - freezer is my next chore..there is very little in it...

I completely forgot about the astronauts landing back on terra firma...

FlaJean...
... yes " adventure " that's one way of putting it...a step into the unknown, my final step...

Shirley...
... like you, i too dont take well to changes...

...oh yes, i am confidant i will soon make new friends within the building, i had already made 3 new friends on the day of going to view, we exchanged names and made interesting conversation...The elderly man i bombarded with questions of " do you live here, and if so, what in your opinion is it like living here " who was walking outside as we drew up in the car, and a lovely couple inside although hubby has an illness and did not speak, couldn't talk...just smiled...The wife was very familiar with where both myself and my friend are living, and we was soon heading back that way.... such a small world we live in..

All..
...sounds like we need a few more Gladys's on our forum, quoting " she was a fun person.."

9.30 am, fridge - freezer done, de-frosted no problem, just had to bang - tap the ice after spraying with a fridge ice spray, tap a few times till the ice dropped, had a floor towel ready and plastic bowl, stood there until the last piece of ice had dropped away, sponge clothed the compartments top and bottom, food stuff not much back in the freezer compartment, a loaf of bread, a couple of cake sponges, some mince meat, packet frozen mixed veg...already taken out some mince, not sure whether beef or lamb, so be having today...all in all the foodstuff was probably out with ice packs on top for i guess 45 - 60 minutes...now switched back on...job done..

Food waste in the plastic container awaiting my MS body to recuperate so as to walk the length to the waste bin, body too messed up at the moment to allow me to put one foot in front of the other without my MS body collapsing underneath me....i now have to sit it out, then i will make my healthy breakfast, muesli with blueberries..play catch-up on the TV with recordings..

Jean, this one will take you to the Streamtime Live site where you can choose whichever cam you want to watch. The three shipping sites are along the St. Clair River which is about 40 miles long, between Lake St. Clair (above Detroit) and Lake Huron. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrtIIVfi-5tMlVXdMDzOMUA

Mary Ann liked to look at the Duluth webcams. These are the main ones.

The Charlevoix, MI cam is also popular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_WnBLX0HXI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr-Ehp4lhmg It is fun to watch the small boats parade up and down the channel.

This is the cam in the Netherlands I have been watching off and on for a week or so. Pleasant looking place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyzxJMWxDeo

Well, Jean, that ought to keep you busy for a while. Enjoy!

Glad to be back!

The hurricane mostly missed  Florida but some of the east coast wasn't so lucky. Tonight they're expecting some bad storms in New York and New England. Vermont had tornado warnings today which is almost unheard of. It's been downgraded to a tropical storm again.

I watched the entire splash-down and recovery of the space vehicle in the Gulf. It was a perfect landing and something we haven't seen for 45 years.

For those of you who tried YES soups. I don't like the sipping soups. Plus, opening them is almost impossible! The one I like is larger and in a can with a pop top opening. They're not in the same place on the shelf, either. The one I like is called Carrot Tomato Bisque and is thicker. It's the best tomato soup I've had. One can is two servings. I don't like most canned soups but the Progresso chowders and creamy soups are good.

Gladys was one of my favorite people. When she first came online she didn't know how to type and made so many bloopers, but she persevered and endeared herself to everyone. She would try anything and became good at doing graphics, making birthday cards, etc. She came to every SN Bash and loved to dance. She had taught ballroom dancing and it showed! She was born in 1918, the same year as my mother. I used to tell her I wanted to be like her when I grew up!  :)

Shirley - I believe goiters were caused from lack of iodine and became rare after we started using iodized salt. I don't like early morning service like that either. I'm a late riser and these days an early napper!

Callie - No need to apologize! With all the problems that come with age, we need to make light of things sometimes. The swallowing problem I have is called oropharyngeal dysphagia.

Jackie - I wish you well in your move. Having a change seems to be just what you need.

Jean - I'll check the Walmart here. It's so hard to find a good tasting tomato  and I do love a tomato sandwich with mayo. For some reason, Florida grown tomatoes have no tartness.

Marilyne - I went to the dentist yesterday. My first doctor/dentist appointment since March. I was impressed with the way they handled precautions. The door was locked so people couldn't just walk in. I called on my cell phone when I got there, they unlocked the door and let me in. Only two people allowed in the waiting room at a time on opposite sides of the room. Everyone was masked. They even used wipes to clean credit and ID cards before handing them back.

Good night all.

Beverley...
...just brightened up my morning ( 5.20 am ) my day, seeing this fun photo...I had to smile when i read what they called themselves..." Dumdiddy singers. " they are sure having themselves a good time...thank you for posting this photo, i am sure it will bring back great memories to many on our forum...

I know i would have never fitted into this group, i cant sing a note in tune, for the life of me...

*****************************************************

Talking of weather...the temps for Friday, the day after i move back, the temps for the day where i will next be living is going to be 34 C....93 F.....this must be a record, a record i am not looking forwards too, especially that it is not in the South...Now the South ( where i am presently living ) in comparison is only going to touch 77 F....this of course should be the other way around, the South being the hottest, but not on this occasion...I shall be hibernating myself when i reach the other end until our heatwave is over, i dont like heat, its bad enough when it touches even the low 80's...but the 90's is not something UK is used to....

***************************************************

It lifts my spirits when Mary Ann's name is mentioned, as she had an eye for beauty....her posts were about what she was viewing...Duluth - Lake Huron - the enjoyment she got from them...always uplifting..
Norms B & T was her and Norms baby, both were very special people, it was Norm's folder...I feel proud we are keeping this folder going in memory of the both of them...

Our forum went down for some hours yesterday, and boy, do we miss it when this happens...we do so take this forum for granted, that it is here ready and waiting for us when we pop in every day....Thank you Michael ( Oldiesmann ) for getting us up and running again....

Well my " vultures " are stopping by to cart away some furniture items and white goods that i cant take with me, due to they will not fit...I very much doubt anyone will offer me any money...some items they have found homes for, some they will keep for themselves...They are doing me a favour with ulterior motives...My Richard would turn in his grave if he knew, but what can one do when they are desperate to move.....Then i can put this experience all behind me, Dorset, my bad mistake...I WILL come out tops in the end...the tables WILL turn....I have literally been living through the worst 16 months of my life, and surprising how many people are taking advantage of it...they are all on the make, so to speak...
Vultures, the lot of them, all jumping on the bandwagon for a freebie at my dead Richards expense...
