Jean I am so sorry to see that Jason is gone now. My condolences.

Well, today is something of a loss. I woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep, so read a while before it was time to feed the cats. Then I sat down for a bit and ended up falling asleep, which threw off the whole day. So, about all I have done is wash dishes, clean litter boxes, play a bit on the computer and, of course, read. Oh, and started a grocery list. It is 75oF and quite breezy here today. I should be out in the yard, but after getting bit or stung by a couple of tiny insects, I have developed something of an aversion. The darn thing got me on my ear. It got all hot and red and then swelled up some. Well, at least it doesn't itch so much or look near as bad as my dad used to look when the gnats and no-see-ums got him. He really puffed up. I went all spring and summer without being bothered, but in the last two months it has been rashes, stings and bites. Go figure.

Amy

Marilyn, I smiled at you trying to get your son wit the tech to a cot. One would think that nothing would bother these  lads but it does.

Jean, sincere condolences to you and your family. Now he is in no more pain and discomfort and in the arms of God.

Patricia, as a child I would climb the tallest trees........but now like you I don't wish to look down!!  A cookie exchange is perfect , one can enjoy different cookies plus have the recipes for what you would like to make.  A lot of enjoyable meetings have gone by the wayside for the time being. The quilting ladies used to have a Christmas dinner and  each bring a dish plus the recipes but not now.

Shirley, we have had many a good times with these neighbours and they both love the wildlife. Polly will even tell them when to go to bed, she will stand on the stairs and meow......now is the time!!

Amy, you know how bears will rise on their hind feet? Well, Farrah does that when she wants attention when I'm at the computer. She will come by the side of the chair and rise to bat the keyboard. She repeats until I stop for a little mini playtime and or a treat.

Cookies are always good! :)

Amy

Patricia, that would be cute to see when Farrah  does that..

Good Evening Everyone...

It has been a while since I
have been here.   I have been busy
cleaning and organizing my apartment.

It is an old story but this time
I finally did it and completed it,
for the first time.

My back room, which I have been using
for storage only,  now has a nice
comfortable chair in there with  a good
light and a decent roll away bed just
in case someone needs to come and stay
over night at any time.

My apartment now makes sense to me
and to any one else who might need to
come into it and take care of it.

I am not sick and I feel good but I just
felt the need to get my home in order
My kitchen now extends into my  dining area.

As I have a bureau there with lots of
drawers and silicone place mats on the
top so I could move my microwave in there
and free up a bunch of space on my counter
tops....  these apartment kitchens are
very small with not many drawers (only 2) and
a small amount of cabinet top space...

Now I have many six more smaller drawers and
two more larger drawers....  WOW  ... so much
more space to function  !!!  I
have decorated a bit more and now I
feel like I finally have  some
living space that makes sense.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but
I did pass my sleep test.... And don't have
to mask up at night...    What a relief
to know that I don't have to do that..

All is well here,  my family are all doing
ok during this time of covid ....    Maine is
one of the lucky States  not to have
too many cases...  but of course, if they
don't get a working vaccine who knows just
what the future will bring...

In my family,  we are all wearing masks
and keeping our distance  and so far, so
good.

What a terrible year ....  it has been
for all of us all over the world...regarding
Covid.

I got my absentee ballot yesterday and
sent it in this morning....   in plenty
of time to get there unless someone screws
up the mail.....     I can't wait until
voting season is over and hopefully
done with ......

Jean,  I am very sorry to hear
about Jason...  my condolences to
you and all his family and friends.

Love to all
Sandy   :smitten:

Bubble - Thank you for opening a place for photos of old friends. This should be fun. Thanks for that story from Gladys. She would love to know we are still remembering her.

Shirley - The name Everleigh seems to be getting popular. I had never heard it before till my brother and his wife had a great-grand and they named her Everleigh over a year ago. Lucky for me, they nearly always are able to get me with one stick.

Marilyne - I have a fear of heights. I hate to be in an outside glass-enclosed elevator. I have to face the wall.  :)  My worst experience was many years ago at the top of the Empire State Building. At that time there was no barricade and you could look over the edge. I get the weebles just thinking about it!

Jenny - Another hurricane may be on the way to Joan's  son Joe's home. I hope he avoids more damage.

Sandy - Congratulations on getting your apartment organized! I wish I could get my closet organized. It's a long walk-in closet and sort of a catch-all.

Prepaing to watch live on BBC tv, around the 8.30am mark, the last two British Airways Boeing 747's simultaneously taking their very last flight, just a short flight locally marking their last, above Heathrow together...This is the very large plane i first ever boarded with my daughter when going to St Lucia, i was 31, my daughter 12...I had never ever flown before, nor my daughter, i was absolutely terrified of heights, so for me to take the largest airplane, one of the longest journeys, a 9 plus hour journey with just a short refuelling stop off at Barbados airport before setting off into the sky for the short journey from leaving UK to over the Atlantic to Hewanorra airport St Lucia Island, the Caribbean sea...
Same as the last flight of the Concorde, a sad day, now taking the last of the Jumbo Boeing 747's out of the sky, the end of an era...

Marilyne

Jackie - Interesting to read about your first airplane flight, on the Boeing 747, now making it's last flight from Heathrow .  It's nostalgic because it reminds us once again of how everything grows old over time, even the airplanes.

Makes me remember our first flight to Hawaii, in 1966, on the original Boeing passenger jet, which was the 707.  When I think of how small it was, compared to the planes of today, it makes me smile.  We thought it was wonderful.  There was no "First Class" on that flight.  All passengers were  together in the one cabin and we were all treated the same, with food, drinks and lots of attention.

This short trip was in celebration of our tenth wedding anniversary.  We stayed for only a few days, at the Reef Hotel on Waikiki, but we managed to see a lot of Oahu, in that short amount of time.  The high point, was tickets to the Don Ho Show, at his original venue, The International Marketplace.  He didn't disappoint . . . playing the piano,  and singing all of his hits.  "Tiny Bubbles", "Pearly Shells", "The Hawaiian Wedding Song", and many others.  Then back home again, on the 707.  A memorable trip.

Good morning from the Interior where its 33° presently, at 8 AM. Nothing interesting to report today other than a later grocery run and perhaps a duet with the washer and dryer. Growing up in Alaska, we were a long way from relatives in Kansas, Colorado, and Missouri. Since we were a territory until 1959, flights back and forth were more regulated by the military than after statehood. We did manage flights out to visit relatives every ten years until the sixties when my sisters and I left home, and the folks retired.

I remember feeling as if we were in a totally different country than ours, which was probably more true than we might have thought. During and after the sixties, my older sister took off to find herself, and my younger sister left for seven years in Europe. I left to travel the US via the military dependent route and didn't return until the late eighties.

Marilyne

Jackie - Thanks for posting Don Ho's theme song - "Tiny Bubbles".  Brings back happy memories of long ago.

Patricia - Sounds like your family scattered in different directions in the 60's.  Are you the only one who ended up back in Alaska?

patricia19

Yes, other than the folks "upon the hill."

I'm back from my grocery shop and what a comedy of errors that was. First, the buses are running again, but seats are marked  far apart and aisle distancing marks, and the driver is inside a plexiglass (plastic?) bubble. They're not charging anyone for riding, which is nice, but only about 8 can ride at a time in a full-sized bus with the way they're arranged it. The only issue is climbing inside easily.

I received a mask from my insurance company, but it kept falling off as while it was sized one size fits all, it wasn't. So, I used a free mask at the store. It kept fogging up my glasses. :(

Afterward, the cab was 11.00 instead of 6.00, as I had forgotten that two of the major bridges are closed until next November so that they can build new ones. I had to have the driver help me out because it was a taxi truck, and I couldn't get out and down by myself. I thought he was going to have to carry me! My osteoarthritis only comes out when the air pressure fluctuates, which just added the cherry on top.

I have to laugh at Farrah. She's no dummy and knows that my leaving and coming back with bags means food. The sound of the can opener doesn't faze her. But, a grocery bag brought in, the sound of a cupboard or any glance from me while I'm in the kitchen and she's right there. If I tell her to leave, she sneaks behind the garbage can and peers around, watching me. She knows she has me trained!

If anyone hasn't seen the new folder Bubble has opened for pictures of "Old but not forgotten friends", you can find it in the forum list under "Gatherings and Meetings".

Patricia - I can sympathize with trying to get in and out of vehicles. We bought a new car recently and wanted a small SUV but I found it awkward, especially getting out. I'm short!

Jackie - My first plane ride was in 1962 non-stop from Boston to Los Angeles. They had over-booked so we were given the lounge in the front of the plane.  It had a large semi-circle upholstered seat with a table (like in a restaurant) and panoramic windows. The plane had a wide aisle with only two seats on each side. Nothing like the planes we're squeezed into today. We had first class treatment from the stewardesses. They served dinner of beef-bourguignon , several small bottles of Jack Daniels (which I took home!) and macadamia nuts. I was terrified while taking off but soon enjoyed the trip.

Beverly...
...good memory of your very first flight..it sounds like they gave you luxury first class treatment..

...Yes its not the taking off or landing as many dont look forwards to, although the thought of leaving the ground was not something i was looking towards nor watching it, i not only closed my porthole window shade but i leant over and closed the shade in front of me, i still remember the look i got from the person who was sitting next to that window, the row of seats in front of me, not a happy look as if to say, " what does she think she is doing, " I know i embarrassed my young daughter..But what i didn't like was once up in the air " the turbulence." We had hit terrible turbulence through the night when on our journey back, which went on longer, seatbelts on...

To give you an idea as to how terrified i was, ( first ever flight going ) i would not even get up out of my seat to go visit the loo for fear of falling through the floor, well that was the way i pictured the plane to be, so i held it all in until we reached touchdown at Barbados, i got off the plane and used the airports loo, such a relief, not the planes loo...

Marilyne...
... yes you are so right, even our once giant and active planes, they too grow old and outlive there usage...apparently the Boeing 747's retirement was brought forwards to yesterday due to our C-Virus impact, this was meant to have taken place at a later date...

I still say our most beautiful of planes to ever grace our sky was the Concorde...I still have the memories of Richard and myself walking towards the entrance gates of our famous Kew Gardens, when the Concorde had flown over our heads from Heathrow, i still have the photo i took of it...

Apologies for droning on about " airplanes."

On my first flight to the US, from Congo to NY, we had to stop 4 times for refueling! That plane was one of the first "Constellation" to do that flight in the mid 50s. One of the stops was Santa Maria island.
When the plane started going down, I looked through the window.  All I could see was water! I was sure we would all drown. Going out of the plane, we saw that the runway was so close to the ocean, it seemed a miracle the pilot braked it in time.

phyllis

Bubble, you and I share a memory.  My first flight was in the mid-50's when I and my two little boys, David, age 3, and Kevin, age 1, flew from Kansas City to New York to join Tom where he was just starting his job with IBM.  We flew on a Constellation.  I had the aisle seat and held Kevin on my lap for the entire trip.  David sat in the middle seat and a young Marine had the window seat.  I will never forget his kindness because somewhere late in the flight I really needed to visit the rest room but didn't know how I would manage with the two little boys.  Without my asking the Marine leaned over and quietly said that if I needed a break he would hold Kevin and look after the boys for me.  I was never so grateful in my life and in 70 years I've never forgotten his small act of kindness.

Take care. All.

Once the plane left Lands End UK, which was soon after Heathrow's runway take-off... it was over the North Atlantic Ocean all the way, knowing nothing but deep water underneath the plane until we touched down at Barbados a good 8-9 hours later... I can still hear the voice of the pilot informing us " we were now leaving land, " that's when the reality set in...

Phyllis...
... its these small kind deeds that we never forget, i wonder what your young marines story was, wonder if he was on his way home to see his own children, nieces or nephews....

Good morning from another frosted Interior where it's just 30° at 8 AM. I fell asleep yesterday afternoon, woke up at 7:30, and thought it was morning! Unfortunately, that meant I was awake until early this morning. And I hate when that happens.

My first time on a plane, I was five and going outside for the first time, visiting relatives. I don't remember that much of the airplane. I was too excited about my first escalators. So much so that I embarrassed my parents. Then, of course, meeting my grandfather for the first time. He had startled me by coming up from behind to lift me for a hug, and I burst into tears. It's odd the events that you remember and those you don't. Then there was the front gate to the farmyard. Swing to the left, and there was a cherry tree. Swing the other way for a peach. For me, that was heaven.

At my other grandparents in Missouri, I was put up on a pony for a ride, a bee stung it, and it took off with me in a bare-knuckle hold. It would be ten years before I got on another horse.

FlaJean

I'll never forget my first airplane flight in 1955.  I had just turned 19 and was flying out to visit my sister in Victorville, CA.  A former schoolmate's mother found out and wanted to fly out with me on the same plane to visit her daughter.

It was quite an adventure.  She was really scared and got it in her head that the plane was on fire.  One of the pilots walked by and she stopped him and told him she saw some sparks and thought the plane was on fire.  He just smiled and said that was normal.  About that time she decided she needed to use the restroom and asked me to go with her because she didn't think she could get her corset unhooked.  (Do you remember when woman used to wear lace up corsets?). There I was in that little stall unlacing her corset and I was so embarrassed.  I had never even known this woman before this trip.  I was one glad 19 year old that we didn't take the same flight home together.

Beverly

I am really enjoying reading your experiences of first time plane rides.

Phyllis - Your first trip was heartwarming. What a thoughtful young man.

Jean - Yours tops them all! That was more like a nightmare. There's barely enough room in those rest rooms for one person! I can imagine how embarrassing it was. My great-aunt used to wear one of those heavy-duty corsets, even in hot weather. You could say she was buxom!

More recently I had an awkward moment on a plane. I was in the middle seat and the man near the aisle fell asleep and leaned his head on my shoulder.  ::)

We haven't seen it for a couple of hours but there was a snake on our enclosed lanai. We're hoping he leaves the same way he came in. So far we don't know how! It looks like a kingsnake, which is non-venomous.

For all the cat-lovers/cat-keepers here:  What breed of cat is the flat-faced one with tiny ears.  I've seen them in several youtubes, and they are so cute.  I know I probably wouldn't be able to afford one of them, but I'd just like to know!

Good link, Jackie. I was going to suggest Persian but see quite a few others with a flat face. The "Daddy" of my Tom (& we all figured most of the other feral cats in the neighborhood) had the flat Persian face. He was same color (yellow) as Tom & only way I could tell them apart is Tom's face is not flat. Big Daddy has been gone for at least 3 or 4 years now, looked ratty enough the last year or so that I put food out for him and all the years before would chase him off.

All the plane rides in the '50s made me think about my job at the air base after the trade school in Omaha (mid-'50s). They were testing the air refueling at the time and giggles from some of the flight crews about missing the target connect and "some farmer wondering why his crop was ruined". My training had been teletype, air traffic control, etc.... didn't use any of that but made charts for the base commander & othes, since my first job out of training was more training as a cartographer for the Corp of Engineers Map Service in K.C.. "Those in charge" insisted I should make new blue prints for the building I worked in because it was nothing like the original blue prints. I tried to explain the difference in drafting but because they were not authorized a draftsman, I was the closest to being one! Crazy years and I was convinced everyone got on the job training & nobody knew what they were doing!

Goodness, haven't thought about those years for a long time. Don't think I would like to live them over! How did we do it?

Cats got me up, for some reason they think 2:30 am is time for their first meal (Chicken of the Sea tuna). Tom & Tiger have wanted to stay out all night, think they know it will soon be too cold. Even Callie wanted out instead of staying in the garage last night. Tom will sit at my bedroom door & stare at me until I wake up to let him in. Some nights they curl up & stay inside but tonight they both wanted back out. My sleep habits are terrible, what I miss at night I try to make up with naps.

Going to have a bite to eat & back to bed. Not sure sleep will come easy with the thoughts of those events 65-70 years ago.

Tomereader1

I think the "Scottish Fold" is closer to the ones I have seen.  I notice in this article some (if not all) of the flat-faced cats have many health problems, teeth, breathing, etc.
Thanks Jackie.
