Peace rose is a favorite.  I had a beautiful Peace rose bush in Ocala.  Adorable photo of the dove.  We have visits every day from 4 or 5 Mourning Doves.  We've been seeing more Bluebirds lately.  Soon we should see our temporary birds that come for the late fall and winter months.

Shirley

Thank you all for the comments about the beaver's job, the dove and peace rose. And thank you very much, Bubble, for posting them. Every time I got on the computer the phone would ring today & now I am so sleepy I am breathing like I ran a mile! Will do better tomorrow, I hope!

I managed to get down to the river tonight but had not been out since early afternoon and the temps really dropped since this morning. Saw a few fish but they were in a hurry to go to deeper water so only ate a few bites of bread before floating on down stream. Almost like they were waiting to say "good by"...I did notice the beaver had cut off branches of the large trees so guess that was why it cut down the big ones, those branches would weave into the den better than big ones.

For Amy

This is the cooked squash

Amy, I had never seen a squash that large and or cooked. The only types here are smaller and imported. And I've only used the frozen versions. I also noticed the Corningware pattern you have. My mother and now my older sister had a set with that pattern, and the one I have now is a french white.

Amy

Patricia, I had to cut off the seed bulb just to get it on the cookie sheet. This was one huge squash. We ate some and I froze a LOT. Dogs liked it also mixed in their food.
I also have the casserole dishes in that pattern.

Very interesting!  Right below my entry, it says "click for Lewisburg forecast.  So I did.  And I got a forecast for Little Rock, ARk.

I'm still mumbling along... Goodness, Amy, I'd be afraid that monster would attack it's so big! My mother loved squash fixed any way possible but she never convinced any of us (including Dad) that we would eat it. Bless her heart, all MY life she ate bland foods, baby food, even.... Doctors said she had ulcers and a year or so before she died one doc told her that if she could stand the pain and ate a cup of 100% whole grain cereal every day, she would see a difference. Made such a difference her fav food became Wendy's chili.... for true! It still makes me sad & happy to remember her delight to eat foods she had avoided all her life.

I also had some of that Corningware.... and it had a recall for some reason but don't remember what or why. Think it was the coffee pot.  My daughter just bought a set of new Fiestaware. My sister had received a room full when she got married in the late '40s or early '50s. She said she got rid of it years ago. My daughter didn't know about the health issue but Googled since her daughter was shopping for the vintage. Turns out the new is okay but the old still a danger.

Going to try to get to bed early, tomorrow is the day I'd better make a list and time events so people don't think I've lost it completely. Weather is supposed to be downright chilly so need to see what's around that fits from last year!  :-\

I have this one with the bumpy lid and it is in perfect condition because I never used it for baking. I use it for my waldorf salad or my fruit salad because the lid keeps it fresh in the fridge.  I bought it as a birthday present to my mother in the early '70s but she used it only for cold hors d'oeuvres.

Yesterday at the seaside

At the sea side-Oct2020.jpg

We are on lockdown and sitting on the beach is not allowed (gets a fat fine!) but bathing in the sea is permissible... It's an excuse to get out of the house and without mask in the water.

Now I too can giggle at myself.

Aviv is having fun at the beach!! Beautiful photo of both....and the welcoming sea. Would love to walk barefoot at shore. Will you find any sea shells there?

There are very few shells, but many small sand-stones in odd shapes that are very interesting to decorate.

here is an example on how to use the natural shape

Cool Pictures !

Amy,  that cooked squash is very
creepy looking  :uglystupid2:

But I bet that it tastes GREAT!  I love
all kinds of squash,  even ugly ones!!

Glad to see that Aviv gets a chance to
get outdoors at the beach.... when I
was young I spent most of my time
at the beach in the very cool to cold
water off the North East Atlantic Coast
in the USA...  I loved it then,
but no more now !!

Amy, what does a squash seed pod look like, and do you cook it, dry the seeds, use for seasonings or save it for future gardening?

Bubble, Illy and Aviv look to be enjoying their mini holiday!

I have ferried across the sea and on the Gulf but never in it. As a child, visiting relatives in Northern California, we drove by the Pacific, but neither parent thought to stop. And as a pregnant wife in Jacks Beach, Florida, while my husband was stationed as a hazmat tech on the USS Saratoga, I couldn't go into the water due to pregnancy issues.

Amy

Sandy, when I cut into the skin it crunched! What was inside was delicious. Listen to when he cuts into the cooked squash. Have no idea why he calls it Canadian as I call it Pennsylvania  squash.

Patricia, I kept the seeds for next years planting. If you have ever gutted a pumpkin, that is what the squash seeds are like but not as big as the pumpkin.

Bubble, I had 3 of those small dishes & sent a meal over for a neighbor's mother one day & when the bowl came back it was a different pattern. I never got around to switching them. She didn't stay with them long, starting into Alzheimer's & my neighbor & husband worked so she had to go to a place that had locked doors. I visited her once when she was moved and she had already forgotten who I was. Such a horrible disease.

Love the pic of your "kids".... so nice to see the smiling & happy faces! Did you paint the rock? Really neat idea. I have no imagination... took an open mind to see a tennis shoe in a plain rock!

Amy, I watched most of that link & don't think I ever looked at squash like that. My mother baked hers & as far as I remember, scooped out with a spoon & ate. I like baked sweet potatoes but only if about half & half butter!  Also like them candied (floating in brown sugar/syrup).

I did go down to the river tonight and noticed a lot lighter because more trees down. I didn't take my phone or camera so will try soon. Seeing so many different birds not normal to us.

Good Morning everyone!

I still have several corning casserole and other baking dishes, including one of the big casserole (cornflower design) with the lid missing, a loaf dish, and all or almost all of the amber cookware. But most of all I treasure my dinner and lunch plate with a fruit design, and some matching ramekins. They discontinued the design long ago. Big bummer because one lunch plate shattered. I could have replaced it on the used market, but decided not to.

Detwiler is a common name here in Central PA. Plenty of Detwilers in the construction business. This Fred is from Harleysville and owns(ed?) a contracting business.

I never tried crookneck squashes. I did, however, make a pumpkin stew on occasion using the pumpkin itself as a baking dish. Just scoop out the seeds and fill the interior with stew meat and whatever stew cut veggies go well with pumpkin. I don't remember how long I had it in the oven or at what temperature though.

patricia19

MarsGal, that pumpkin dished stew sounds interesting and I think I'm going to look for it,thanks!

Patricia, I found a dessert version of using a pumpkin as a casserole dish that I think is nice.
https://kumquatblog.com/recipe-redux-baked-mini-pumpkins/

Taste of Home has a recipe with photo that looks a lot like what I did. While I may have browned the stew meat before including it in the mix, I am almost positive I did not cook the stew itself on the stove before placing it in the pumpkin. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/pumpkin-stew/

Taste of Home also has a mini version using sausage and rice which looks good. Never thought of using rice. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/sausage-rice-stuffed-pumpkins/ I never thought of using mini-pumpkins, but I have done stuffed acorn squash so why not, especially now that I am only cooking for me. I wonder how well a cooked mini-pumpkin casserole would freeze. There are a few other recipes on the net but not many. Too bad I don't remember where I got the recipe I used or where it got to.

patricia19

Thanks for all of these, MarsGal! All of our pumpkins are imported and all are the small ones. So, this would work out well, and yes, I would brown the meat first. Thank you for these!

I agree, Santa needs the crinkle in the eyes! Our lives have all changed so much in the years we've known each other. Don, I hope you are still finding ways to make people around you smile. Thanks for sending the photo to Bubble to share with us.

Bubble, tell Aviv that I like the happy ghost on the end best! Nice art work! When I was in 5th, 6th, & 7th grades our art teacher fixed it with store owners downtown to have us paint Halloween characters on store windows. Since we did reverse painting (on inside to show out), it was a new way of thinking to put those accent colors/lines on first & then the background.

We had a "roving" artist that spent one day a week at each of the elementary schools in our little town. I learned more from that teacher in one hour once a week than I did from the hour every day art classes in high school. I've never found anyone that had that type art class in elementary school but wish anyone interested had the opportunity. Tell him I give a "2 thumbs up" for his drawings!

Sneaky, Bubble, but thanks so much. It is nice to see Don again. I wish him well.
