Good morning, nothing new here, we're still skirting zero, and there are few cars on the roads. My morning call, text, and message each day is the only link to my local friends. When this is over, and the major lockdown eased, everyone is talking about one big blowout party that will have us all comatose for days after.

I know more cars are in the outlying areas where the malls and stores are. The ethnic groceries are all closed, and only the mall groceries, Safeway, the one Walmart, and the two Kroger Fred Meyers open for necessities and groceries. For a city of 100,000 souls, you'd think there would be more crowds, but everything is locked up or gone away.

They started giving shots for those sixty-five and over yesterday, but I've yet to make an appointment. I don't know where, other than clinics or health centers, where they'll administer the vaccines. I know the hospital is out as they're slammed with the virus. There is so little information given out locally, and since all my news is computer generated, I don't know that much on local news.

MarsGal, I hope you're taking some time for yourself and some pampering with all that you're doing. I know that the busier we are, the more we need it, even if it's only a few moments here and there.

Marilyne, I've been so caught up in national news and my anger at how ignorant so many are that I've neglected even my PSP. It's depressing that so many care more about their selfishness than about their friends or family. And you know there will be another huge surge of Covid because of their selfish ignorance.

FlaJean

Tome, I hope by this time you have been able to renew your driver's license.

When we moved from Ocala to Niceville in 2016 we took our documentation and had the address changed on our licenses.  A gold star was embedded in the new driver's license.  Since 2010 if you have a gold star embedded you don't have to present any documentation when you renew.  Because we are over 80 years the renewal will be 6 years instead of 8 years.  We have an app't Feb. 1st and at our ages this will no doubt be the last time to have to renew.😊

It has been very wintery these last few days.  I hope we have a break before too long with a few warmer days.  Between the weather, the pandemic and political news 2021 is not going too well, is it?

Marilyne, It was good that AJ did get his driver's license renewed for a year.  A car is a necessity in our area.  You just don't have a way to get anywhere without one in this small town.

Covid is not as bad in our area as it is further south but I check each day and there are always around 50 to 200 more cases showing up in our county each day.  I have my 6 month checkup next month and I still haven't gone for my lab test.  I just hate to take the chance as I have to go to the hospital for the test.  I've lived all these years without having the flu and I sure don't want to get the coronavirus at this age.

Marsgal, your pets and watching out for George's pets is keeping you plenty busy.  Take care of yourself and stay healthy.

Jenny, Good to see your post and hope your report from your brother's visit to your dad is good!

Jackie, I hope you are doing OK.  Think of you often.

Have a good day everyone, if possible.

Sandy

Good Evening Everyone!

The weather here on the rocky coast of
Maine has been very milk compared to
past Winters.

Of course,  I spend most of my time
indoors, watching tv, and planning my
grocery orders to put into my local
grocery so that Kelly can pick it up and
delivery it to me (usually on Wednesday
around noon) .. trying to build up a
supply of food so that if someone gets
sick in the family, they can stay away
from me... until I get my Covid shot...
Being 77 I should be getting it pretty soon
as they are moving up  who gets the shots...

Hopefully these shots will prevent me
from get the Covid Virus... then the rest
of the family can start to relax a bit.

I am really proud of my kids and Grand kids
for trying to stay safe... by washing their hands and
wearing their masks..

I have been using all this free time
to clear out my back room and make it
into my bedroom, instead of a store
room as it  has been for years.

It took me a long time to get things
straightened out enough to be able
to make it a nice comfortable warmer
room for me.

My living room
(where I use to sleep)  is still being
used as my office space and has a
comfortable roll away bed for any
one else who might need it.

Never know when that might come
in handy ..  One of my grand
daughters is in nursing school,
right down the street...

My eyes are glued to the tv
because of the horror of all the
carnage going on in DC plus
all that is planned  during the
next week until President Biden
and VP Harris take their office..

Between Covid and the Transfer
of Power going on,  and the
insurrection by  criminals terrorizing.
I am very anxious of what the next
couple of weeks will be...

Moving my Bed to the back bedroom
makes me feel safe now,  because
my front room is right on the corner
of two main streets in Portland.

My bedroom is now a good place for me
to hide if things get rough.
Only one small window,  not
three gigantic ones (each being
4 feet by  9 feet...  (lots of
glass)

Bless everyone and stay safe and if
you can,  stay Covid free!

Sandy

Everybody's been saying they've passed their medical at the doctors, and that they're feeling pretty good, but golly, nobody's been posting anything really.  I can understand busy, but we have a need for updates.  We tend to miss folks that don't show up regularly.  LOL. So,Jane, Gloria, Patricia, Lloyd, and all those we haven't heard from lately (I know a lot of you posted yesterday), stand up tall and call out "here" or "present".  Or, like my daughter texts me "K", for okay. Can't have anyone going AWOL here at Seniors&Friends.  :missyou:

P.S. Hey Sandy, I have a living room that needs re-arranging, how soon can you be here? LOL! ::)

MarsGal

Still no luck finding a shelter to take the cats in. I received a message from one that will post pix and description on their website. I'll have to see if I can get some good pix of the cats and fill out a form for each. George's GF is reaching out to a few people up in Mansfield too.

Lily is getting more aggressive with the other cats if they come near, even if they just want to walk by. This morning she nosed into Oscar's food dish without a fuss from Oscar. He went upstairs, so I followed with another dish for him. Shan runs when she growls. I am going to have to go back to separating her at meal times. Yesterday, every time I went into the kitchen she followed, loudly pronouncing that she expected me to feed her. Ive been accommodating her for now because she really needs to put on a little weight. She is spending some nap time downstairs with us in the late afternoon and early evening without fuss, so far.

I cooked a nice flank steak yesterday and had some mixed vegetables and Bob Evans mashed potatoes with it. The mashed potatoes were good, but I can taste the saltiness in it. Today I am going to exercise the vacuum.

I was just looking at the info for PA regarding vaccinations in PA. Only 600,000 vaccines have been shipped to PA so far. I am in the Phase B category, so I won't be eligible for a while yet.

patricia19

Good morning from the Interior. Nothing new here other than it takes planning and forethought to get several tasks done. I need to work on exercise to help me, my house, and my arthritis, which is horrible this winter.

Marilyne

Good morning all - 11:30 here, and all I have accomplished is to take a shower and wash my hair.  Now I have to contend with this fly-a-way mop of fine hair. I'll try to tame it down with a curling iron.

Patricia - my arthritis is also bad this Winter, and so are my vocal cords.  As I've mentioned in the past, I have one paralyzed vocal cord, which will never work again, so I have to rely on the good one to do all my talking! When the air is dry and cold, the good one becomes weak and worn out very quickly.  I have a humidifier, but it doesn't seem to be helping me this Winter?  IF ONLY it would rain, but nary a drop has fallen.  We've had a couple of sprinkles, but nothing measurable.  I've lived in CA all my life, and never have seen a Winter with no rain.  :'(

MarsGal - your dinner last night sounds very tasty.  I often buy those Bob Evans mashed potatoes, and the one tray usually lasts for two meals.  I'm no good in the kitchen anymore, so usually take the quickest and easiest way to the dinner table!  I hope that Lily and your three cats can come to to some kind of truce or at least an acceptance.    You didn't say how old Lily is, but if she has lived her whole life at George's, with his other three, I'm sure this has been very hard on her.  Your vaccination scheduling sounds about like ours.  Large numbers of people ahead of AJ and me, even though we are in the oldest age group.  They are still vaccinating Medical staff and health care workers, as well as dentists and staff.  Now starting on nursing homes, rehab centers, and senior retirement communities.  Those are huge here in CA, so will take a long time to trickle down to those of us oldsters who live at home.

Sandy - I keep wanting to tell you that I ordered that sock device that you recommended . . . where you fit the sock on the end, and pull with the ropes.  It love it, and so glad you told us about it.  THANK YOU!

Jean - Glad you and Larry are both doing okay.  I hope everything works out for you, as far as your drivers license is concerned.  AJ's was renewed for four years, with no eye check or written test.  In four years he will be 90!  :o

Speaking of people age 90, last night we watched a movie on Amazon Prime, called, "Knives Out".  Christopher Plummer, was one of the main characters, and I looked him up and found out he was born in 1929, so will be 92 this year. This movie was made in 2019, so he was 90 at the time!  He was very good, and very funny.  The movie was one of those "who-done-it" mysteries, and was a good comedy.  Others in it were Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, and a bunch of younger actors that I didn't recognize.  I recommend it for some light entertainment!  ;D

Tomereader1

Patricia, I'm with you on the exercise/arthritis problems.  The cold weather here has both my knees, and one hip really acting up.  This is not, for me, disabling, but darn it hurts.  I want so much to do some outdoor walking, but the cold just makes everything worse.  Then, too, I'm afraid if I'm out walking and the hip or knee "go out" how I will get help...and I don't want to go to a hospital for any reason.  I try to stay upright and walk as much as possible here in the house, not just sit and watch TV/read/computer.  I doubt that I do anywhere near 10,000 steps, but I know it's quite a bit, as one day I counted, just up until noon, and had clocked quite a few steps, just doing the morning chores and regular housework.
Old age is certainly not for "sissies" as said quite nicely by Bette Davis!

Tomereader ...
"P.S. Hey Sandy, I have a living room that needs
re-arranging, how soon can you be here? LOL! ::)"

LOL  .. I can not stop rearranging furniture...  I moved my double
bed into my  back bedroom and I thought that was going
to kill me.  It i was not easy to move a double bed mattress by
myself...  but I can't seem to stop the urge to do so, especially
now when visitors are not allowed ...

Marsgal...
You have such a difficult job trying to deal with someone else's
animals.   I am so sorry for you.

Being 77,  I am in the age group that might just
be qualified for a covid vaccination...  I am ready when
ever they give me a call.

Marilyne...
"Sandy - I keep wanting to tell you that I ordered that sock device that you recommended . . . where you fit the sock on the end, and pull with the ropes.  It love it, and so glad you told us about it.  THANK YOU!

I am so glad Marilyne...   it works really well for me also.
I have just a bit too much around my middle to make it
easy for me to put on socks...

I have been watching the impeachment all day today,

This is all so very sad ...  Now they are saying
that there will be more protesting for a long
long while.    I sure am glad I moved back into
my backroom ... away from those huge windows
in  my living area facing the main street
here in Portland.

Peace to everyone.

Sandy, not too much to re-arrange in my living room; love seat, large chair with ottoman, couple of tables.  And I have to find a place to move a 4 drawer file cabinet that is taking up room, and looking too "office-y" to suit me.  Oh, well, when the health scare gets better, there's a couple of junior high school boys across the street that could probably use a couple of extra bucks for some muscle workouts. LOL.  They congregate with their schoolmates, and I don't dare let them into my "bubble", which is only me.  I've got some of those furniture mover pad things, and may try to do most of it myself, as I am sooooo tired of the way it is set up now.  I know I can scoot the tables around, and maybe the chair/ottoman. The love seat is a dual-reclining love seat, and a little heavier and awkward for me to try and move.  And then there's the part where you have to vacuum the carpet where the furniture used to be, as well as the baseboards. Making myself tired just thinking about all that!  Stay safe, don't injure yourself moving things.

Tomereader1

P.S.  Sandy, where'd you get the sock puller upper thingy?

Sandy

I got my sock puller upper from Amazon..

Go to Amqzon and search for
"sock puller aid easy on and off"
and you can find a number of them..

I think that I got the "Sock Aid" ...
or something like that...they are all
pretty much the same.

They work really good.

It is late, but I want to at least say HELLO.

NOTHING new here.  At least that means nothing bad to report.

My brother made it safely to AZ.  He sent a picture of my Dad today and he looks about the same as he did when we saw him last.  I sent it to all of my sons and they all appreciated seeing him and were happy about how he looks.  I hope to talk to my brother soon to see what he has to say.

Still no calls about us getting our Covid Vaccine.  The governor says all 70 and above will be vaccinated by the end of February.

SANDY, I hope the sock pull er upper works well for you.

MARILYNE, our DIL, is a RN and she is finally going to get her shot tomorrow.  We hope!  She is a hospice nurse and we sure thought she would be higher on the list than she is.  A friend of mine in New Mexico, also a RN and a hospice nurse got her SECOND one today.  I, too, sure have been suffering with my arthritis...the cold weather does not help and the pressures changing with storms makes it even worse.  I am sorry you also have to deal with your vocal cord issue.  I hope it is not too uncomfortable for you?  Good that the sock puller upper seems to work well for you.

MARSGAL, I am sorry there is still no news regarding some one to take the kitties.  Your dinner sure sounded good....glad you are taking care of YOU.

PATRICIA.....sorry your arthritis is bad this winter also.

Pleasant dreams to all.

The morning update.

I am starting to get some responses regarding the cats. One outfit, which doesn't have any available physical space, has offered to let me post the cats on their website. I just heard from another requesting my phone number to contact me. The GF has a friend who works at a shelter up in the Mansfield area. There are three shelters relatively nearby, including one just over the border in NY. I need to contact the vet today to get age, etc. info for them. Cross your fingers something will turn up very soon.

Lily got a talking to about her snarling at the others when the get near her. I didn't yell at her, but firmly told her no a time or two and the rest of the day she was mostly quiet. In fact, I noticed instead of defending her space, she took off a couple of times. All four napped in the living room with me yesterday afternoon. Lily took over the cardboard box with an old blanket in it. I have two cat beds but the cats seem to prefer the boxes with blankets.

The temp this morning is 33F to go up to around 48F, cloudy (again!) with possibility of some rain.

The official shipping season on the Great Lakes has ended so not so much to see. Saw six zebra this morning (around noon to 1pm there, I think) at Tembe Elephant Park. I haven't been watching at the right times to see much there lately.

It is really strange and disturbing to see the National Guard (especially so many) in DC.

Good morning everyone.  A new day has dawned, and I'm hoping it will be a pleasant one for all of you who post here, or who read this folder.

Jenny -  First I want to thank you!   It feels so good when someone acknowledges our individual health issues or personal problems, that are causing us added stress or pain.  Some of our loved ones are struggling to just get through the day, as they face all sorts of personal issues that are out of their control.  I know you understand, what with Michele's problems, your father, and so many recent sad situations in your family.   It must have been a boost for you to see the picture your brother took of your Dad!  Seeing him looking the same must have been a relief.

Still no word about when we will get the Covid vaccine?   It's understandable, what with two million people, here in Santa Clara County, alone!   Even more in surrounding counties, and of course Los Angeles county is something like twelve million?  :yikes:    I don't remember the latest count, but helps us to understand why this will likely be a long wait for those of us in California.

MarsGal - Glad you gave Lily a good talking to!  ha ha  ;D   Poor scared little kitty, is probably trying to regain some sort of control over her new life. I hope she will relax before long, and accept her new surroundings.

I must get ready now, and make a quick, in & out visit, to our least crowded super market.   I only plan to get bread, milk, juice, and maybe some chicken to stretch for a couple of meals. A few cans of soup and potatoes will be about all I can handle.   AJ has to go to his last hand therapy session, so he won't be going with me this morning.

Hope we hear again from Tomereader, Sandy, Patricia, Jean, Shirley, and others the we haven't heard from in a long while, like . . .  Joy, Beverly, shirleyn, Jackie, and JeanneP.  I haven't seen JeanneP posting anywhere in the forum for a long time?  I was planning to send her an email, but I see that her address isn't showing on our member list?  If anyone knows what it is, please let me know?

Good morning, I just woke up after one of those out of the blue sleepless nights, didn't go down until just after five. It's only 8:49 now. Absolutely nothing new here other than posting my PSP; thank you, Tome, for your appreciation, by the way. My arthritis, which is affected by the barometric pressure, has gone back into hiding, and my morning call around has finished. So, another usual morning.

MarsGal, I hope everything is going well for you soon and that Lily can settle into this new phase of her life. I'm sure she misses George too. Jean, good morning! I loved your Christmas cactus and wished they did as well here!

Jeanne hasn't posted for a long while altho she was here the 3rd. Joy has been battling anxiety, I hope she's feeling better these days, and Shirleyn comes on occasion to say hi! Jackie stops in twice a day, she was here less than an hour ago, and I would love to hear from Beverly.

shirleyn

Good Afternoon!  Here comes the 'occasional' shirleyn.  :D  I have just been reading in here lately - a bad habit to get into.  Patricia, I have been watching the program about Alaska, which takes place in Homer. I have been enjoying it & wondering if it is realistic.  I understand that you do not watch TV, so guess you do not know about them, the Kilchers?

Marilyne and Jenny and Patricia, I am another one with the dang arthritis.  And I also have the RA, which has been giving me troubles.  And that led into my sciatic nerve snapping and leaving a great big black and blue mark from my wrist to my elbow, on the inside of my arm.  Boy, did that ever hurt.

Marsgal, so glad to see you are getting along and have some good sounding leads for the kitties.

shirleyn
(~_~)

patricia19

Hi to Shirleyn, the occasional one!

I hadn't heard of the show, so I looked it up on the web. Yes, it's scripted, and no, it's a far cry from realism. They're just a few miles from the largest city in our state, a population of 300,000, and the city of Homer is less than twenty minutes drive, and it has a population of 5,000. It's the same as with house building or bachelor reality shows; what you see is a manufactured product. Enjoy it as such. It's the reason I used to watch survivor long ago.

I think we all have a hitch in our get-a-long at some point and time. I have been using this to help keep Arthur at bay but he does sneak in at times. One lady I know is off her RA/meds due to curcumin.  Make sure one checks with their Dr as it may react to your meds. I know this acts as a blood thinner also....so clear it with your Dr.

I haven't used the capsules before, but I use a lot of ground turmeric spice in many dishes since I discovered it in a masala recipe. Since my osteoarthritis is so affected by barometric pressure, it comes and goes. But when it's here, it aches! I don't really want to take a long term med for a condition that, while painful, isn't constant. I think I might up my intake and see if that helps?

CallieOK

Good Morning,

Just checked to see when I posted last and thought y'all might have forgotten me!

It's been a very busy week!

On Monday, I learned how to join in an organization's meetings and connected Book Club via Zoom without having to install the program.

On Tuesday,  I had my hair done as usual and then came home to fix lunch for #1 son before he took me to a "maintenance" doctor appointment.  All good there   He put Christmas decorations in the garage cabinets, put Christmas dishes in the cupboard over the sink and changed a light bulb while he was here.

On Wednesday, I took care of some business phone calls before son took me to another "maintenance" doctor appointment.  This one was to check the pressure in my eyes which had been creeping toward glaucoma.  I'd been on two kinds of prescription eye drops and- Hooray! - they lowered the pressure to a very acceptable level.  Don't have to go back for 6 months.

Yesterday I did some errands and a few Domestic Duties.

Today I'm doing laundry, making sliders, microwaving a package of baby carrots to "crisp tender" and chilling so I can have them instead of potato chips with my lunch sandwiches.  Grocery order to be delivered this afternoon.

Family who had tested Positive had very few symptoms (son said biggest issues were Boredom and "Who's Going To Cook?") and were released from quorentine.  Miss Ellen flew back to NYC last Monday (no issues - flight even landed early), Miss Emily is now a salaried employee at the Chiropractic Clinic where she did her Fall internship and Sir Carson has returned to work and classes at OSU.

My prayers and good wishes for healing are with each of you who is experiencing health issues and other traumas.

Onward and Upward.

Tomereader1

Very interesting.  Thank you.

Tomereader1

I think I should have skipped breakfast this morning.  Last week I was having a craving for Malt-O-Meal hot cereal.  So, having bought a large box, I decided this morning would be a good time to fix some.

For 1 Serving, 3 tablespoons of the cereal to 1 cup of boiling water, stirring continually (it forms lumps really easily)!  Measuring out the 3 Tbs of cereal, I spilled about half of it in the sink; just a mess, no problem.  Remeasured...water was boiling at this point.  Started stirring the cereal into the boiling water, but before I could reduce the heat under the pan, it roiled and boiled and spilled over the stove burner, as I'm trying to lift the saucepan off the heat! Got that done without any physical injury, and continuing stirring, but my nice clean stovetop and burner (which I detailed in a post on New Year's about spilling the black-eyed pea juice on the stove & burner and instigated a whole stovetop cleaning including burner pans, etc.) is now ready for another cleaning.

Should have just had coffee and juice!
:-[

patricia19

Sounds like you had a Monday on a Friday! I've done that before, and on mine, I have to lift the entire top to clean under the burners

Marilyne

Tomereader! -  I think we should have a contest between the two of us, as to who can do the most damage in the kitchen.  Every day is disaster time here, as I spill, drop, and burn, just about everything I touch.  I seem to have lost the ability to put together a simple meal.  I'm so looking forward to when Covid is finally conquered, and the supermarkets open their hot trays filled with a selection of dinner items.  Help yourself to a balanced meal, and pay by the pound!

Callie - I didn't forget you!  I enjoy reading your messages, and like keeping up with Miss Ellen, Miss Emily and Sir Carson! :)   I meant to tell you yesterday, that there is/was a string of musicals playing today on Turner, in case you might be interested.  I recorded two that I haven't seen in at least 30 years - "Easter Parade", with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, and "Kiss Me Kate", with Ann Miller and Howard Keel.  I remember one scene in "Kate", with a spectacular dance by Miller, so looking forward to seeing it again.
You mentioned putting away your Christmas dishes, so now I'm curious as to what pattern you have?    I truly love dinnerware, and have collected different patterns for years, for different holidays and seasons.  I used to use the Spode Christmas Tree, for the Holidays, but gave that set to my dil a number of years ago.  Now I use Franciscan Ivy . . . always looks beautiful on a festive Christmas table cloth.

Amy - I also tried Tumeric, a while back, but didn't seem to make a difference in my arthritis?  Others swear by it, so I probably didn't give it enough of a chance, and will try it again.  I really need some relief for my hands. The weakness and lack of flexibility in my hands/fingers, is why I have so much trouble in the kitchen . . . preparing and cooking food!

shirleyn - Good to see your message yesterday.  Don't be so "occasional"!  We like to hear from you, and all others who have ever posted here in B&T.  I haven't seen the Alaska show you mentioned, but I'll look for it.  I like to watch the two that play on HGTV - "Living Alaska", and "Buying Alaska".  Also "Buying the Yukon".  Those are mostly about people looking at and eventually buying a house, or property.  Some who have lots of money to spend, buy those massive modern log homes, with all the comfort that goes with them.  Others want to live "off the grid", which means generators, rainwater catchment systems, and an outhouse!  :yikes:

Patricia - On most of those shows they show a map, of exactly where the property is, how much acreage, and how close to the nearest town or settlement, etc.  The big luxurious ones are usually fairly close to a decent sized city, and have all the comforts.  I would have thought that those who wanted to live off the grid, in minimum size cabins would be young and strong, but not necessarily so.  A surprising number of couples look be in their 60's and 70's.

Marilyne, I do think it has to be 95% curcumin.  Another thing that also helps and I learnt this from my Aunt Kate, any time she was at a place she would volunteer to wash the dishes. She would put the hottest water she could stand  and put her hands in it. She was one amazing lady, whenever anyone said they were coming to Canada and asked her if she would like to come ,she was ready in a heart beat. She would always return with her supply of Rikkets bluing.........not to be used on laundry but it kept her snow white hair , snow white :) I just googled and by golly you can still get it!! I remember using it  a cube in an old sock tied with a knot to put in the rinse water for the whites.. learnt something today..didn't think it was still around.

I remember "bluing" from when my Mom and my aunt used to manage a Washateria.  After WWII was over, not much employment for women.  I used to go with Mom. Folks would bring in their laundry, and Mom or Aunt would separate and put in the soap powder, and add the bluing for the whites later. I guess most machines of that day did not have agitators, or very good ones, and they used cut off broom handles to push the clothes down and around in the washer. I can still remember the smell of that laundry space, the fresh clean smell of washed clothes, the warm, steamy heat from the dryers. Sometimes my memory is darned good!

I remember bluing as a child and it is still sold in stores that I've seen. I myself have never used it but I do use Oxyclean in the wash cycle for whites.

Marilyne I looked up your pattern and it's a very simple and clean pattern that I like. I inherited Desert Rose, a complete set from my mother but it hasn't been unpacked or used in years as it's too fussy for me. My china set is pure white with a raised edging.
