Marilyne, I saw pictures of mudslides on yesterday's newscast. This was serendipitous, as on the TV show 9-1-1, one of the segments featured a mudslide, not caused by rain, but by a dam breaking and taking out homes, etc. and the ubiquitous H O L L Y W O O D sign! Weather gets to be a problem, no matter your location or weather type.  Heat waves, tornadoes, floods, mudslides, blizzard conditions, wildfires, droughts.  Ain't it the truth?  Our temp, here at 12:44 PM is 40 degrees, supposed to get much warmer with a nice day tomorrow, then rain coming on Saturday.  Our rain is getting to be a weekend thing, where if you had something planned (as little as we can plan for), you get rained out. Hope you didn't get any "mud".  But guess you were grateful for the rain.

CallieOK

Good Afternoon,

I enjoyed the Zoom Book Club meeting.  Didn't particularly care for the book ("The Lost Girls of Paris") but I always enjoy listening to the discussion and it was so nice to see faces and hear voices.

Steak "Crum-bay" was delicious.  It's an old (i.e. "before slow cookers"  ;) ) recipe from a church Cook Book and uses a casserole.  So I wasn't sure how it would turn out in the slow cooker but, now, I'll never do it any other way.

Just as #2 son and I finished eating, his brother walked in.  He had been helping Sir Carson purchase a new/used pickup and stopped by on the way back home.  He finished the leftovers.  ;)

Also made it to Braum's and Walgreen's, which are becoming my "mini-markets".  Of course, I managed to forget two things on my list but they're not important enough to make another trip.

Today's outing was to get my hair done. Filled the bird feeder when I got home and noticed some daffodils poking their stems out.  Would like to separate the bulbs but don't think this is the right time to do that.
Advice, anyone?

I'm spending most evenings reading e-books because there isn't anything on t.v. that sounds interesting - even the PBS programs.

And that's what's going on in my little corner of the world.

Recipe please for the Steak Crumbe, Callie.  You may PM me or just post it in the What's for Dinner forum.

We got a call from our doctor tonight inviting us to go to a hospital tomorrow to get our Covid Vaccine.  We feel like we won a lottery.  So blessed to be able to go together and get this done.

CALLIE, how nice you got to be with BOTH of your sons today.

MARILYN, the weather on both coasts are bad now.  So sad that there can not just be some rain then more and so on, rather than it to all come down and cause damage.

I hope everyone had a good day.

Sleep well.

Re our earlier climate change discussion;

"Earth's biggest rivers are streams of warm water vapor in the atmosphere that can cause huge rain and snowfall over land. Climate change is making them longer, wetter, and stronger."

"Rivers in the sky
On Feb. 27, 2019, an atmospheric river propelled a plume of water vapor 350 miles wide and 1,600 miles long through the sky from the tropical North Pacific Ocean to the coast of Northern California.

Just north of San Francisco Bay, in Sonoma County's famed wine country, the storm dumped over 21 inches of rain. The Russian River crested at 45.4 feet – 13.4 feet above flood stage.

For the fifth time in four decades, the town of Guerneville was submerged under the murky brown floodwaters of the lower Russian River. Damages in Sonoma County alone were estimated at over US$100 million."

Events like these have drawn attention in recent years, but atmospheric rivers are not new. They have meandered through the sky for millions of years, transporting water vapor from the equator toward the poles.

https://tinyurl.com/y75zxzwk

Marilyne

Patricia - The Atmospheric River, is the type of storm we had here over the past three days.  That's why all the evacuations and warnings for people in the Santa Cruz Mountain communities. They had six inches of rain up there, but fortunately it stopped, and no land slides.  This is very close to us, as Los Gatos is the last town, before you go up and over the SC Mountain range to the coast.  Most of the rain fell up there, but we did get two to three inches here.  San Jose got less, but further South in Monterey and San Luis Obispo got lots more.

The Atmospheric River comes from the S/W in the vicinity of Hawaii.  We used to call it, The Pineapple Express, but the Meteorological Society renamed it just within the past couple of years.  Pineapple Express, was not official enough sounding for them, although that's what we all still call it.  By the way, it's been around and arriving every Winter, from as far back as I can remember.  Nothing new.

My brother and his wife lived in Guerneville, near the Russian River throughout their long marriage.  His wife still lives in the same house.  Also I have a number of cousins living there.  Every year, it's the same old flood and sand-bag brigade, trying to hold back the River, to no avail.  This is nothing new for those who live there.  Some years are worse than others.  once in a while there will be a drought year with no flooding at all.

patricia19

Marilyne, the article explains what is new, and why. In part, "My research combines economics and atmospheric science to measure damage from severe weather events. Recently I led a team of researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Army Corps of Engineers in the first systematic analysis of damages from atmospheric rivers due to extreme flooding. We found that while many of these events are benign, the largest of them cause most of the flooding damage in the western U.S. And atmospheric rivers are predicted to grow longer, wetter and wider in a warming climate.

 Helpful and harmful
Researchers have known for some time that flooding due to atmospheric rivers could cost a lot of money, but until our study no one had quantified these damages. We used a catalog of atmospheric river events compiled by Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes, and matched it to 40 years of flood insurance records and 20 years of National Weather Service damage estimates.

We found that atmospheric rivers caused an average of $1.1 billion in flood damages yearly in the western U.S. More than 80% of all flooding damages in the West in the years we studied were associated with atmospheric rivers. In some areas, such as coastal northern California, these systems caused over 99% of damages.

Our data showed that in an average year, about 40 atmospheric rivers made landfall along the Pacific coast somewhere between Baja California and British Columbia. Most of these events were benign: About half caused no insured losses, and these storms replenished the region's water supply.

But there were a number of exceptions. We used a recently developed atmospheric river classification scale that ranks the storms from 1 to 5, similar to systems for categorizing hurricanes and tornadoes. There was a clear link between these categories and observed damages."

Just put Steak Crumbe recipe in "What's For Dinner" folder.  I don't know how to do a link. Help, please?

Joanne, didn't realize you were in Dallas.  How nice to know there's another poster in this "neck of the woods".

Callie, I'm absolutely NoGood at doing Links.  Most everyone else here can help you, and maybe I'll learn how it's done, also.

Yes, Callie, whenever the weatherman mentions something bad in the Oklahoma area, I always think of you, and hope you're out of the way of it.  We are both in that "valley of no return" otherwise known as tornado alley that swoops right up thru
Northeast Texas into Oklahoma.  Never know what it might bring with it.

We are having some sunshine, but the wind is very cold, otherwise a beautiful day.
supposed to rain here tomorrow (that's last night's weather report of course) I don't turn TV on during the day except for the 11:00 AM news, and I missed that today.

I just had to kick Shan and Oscar out of the room because Oscar decided to pest Lucy who went into a hissy fit and went under the futon. Shan came in to join him. Since Lucy can't hear, the guys can sometimes sneak up on her, but usually only one cat at a time.

The "gang of three" are now housed at the Harrisburg Humane Society. We took them over yesterday. We also gave them four bags of dry food, the remaining wet food cans, two nice sturdy cat carriers and some cat accessories which were much appreciated.

Now comes the sorting and clearing of stuff to be trashed/recycled or divied out. The GF has already called a realtor in even though the will has not yet been probated. The realtor can list the property but cannot sell it until that is done. This is really getting depressing; I feel like a vulture picking George's bones. But at least we will have everything ready to go when the lawyer gets off his butt and actually files. It seems he cannot decide which is his main/legal address in order to file the will, down here or up at his home in Mansfield.

The Starship SN9 test keeps getting held up. I think, this time, someone at the FAA got pissy, something about the paperwork. They have been trying to get that sorted for three days. The next opportunity to do the test is February 1.

We are scheduled for a possible 6" of snow over Sunday and Monday. Thrilling.  :snowball:

If you want to do a link, the easiest method is to right-click the original link, select copy, and then paste in your post. For example, if I were to copy Tome's link #19332, I would right-click the date at the top left, left click on the copy link, in the menu then go to the new post and right-click for the menu and left-click on paste.

A late HELLO to ALL.

After watching the National news tonight and hearing about all the bad storms all, over the place, I certainly hope everyone can stay safe.  We will have a couple f nice days, then big storms are coming and they look pretty bad.

Everything went perfect regarding us getting our vaccine.  When we got there Bob scoped out where we were to go and ended up having me park right out side of the door....entered, got our temp taken, walked two steps and checked in....had paperwork all filled out so it was a two minute time, walked a little way and immediately sat down for the shot...both of us at the same time, went into the room and schedule our next shot, waited our 15 minutes and we were done.  VERY WELL SET UP, everyone there was so nice, of course we are thanking them profusely.....great experience.  We really were so lucky to be able to do it this way😘. Bob has the very slightest soreness at the injection site other than that nothing.  I did not feel a thing when given the shot.  It was bleeding a bit and she push firmly on the site before putting the bandaid on.....as we were waiting I started to feel the very slightest tingling around the injection site....then it started moving down my arm ...very light tingle.....did that for a couple of hours.....and, about the same time my nose started running.  It did that off and on for the rest of the evening....when I was in my chair watching TV and after I was laying down in bed it did not do it.  Only when I was up moving around.  Now do either of these things have anything to do with it??  Who knows?

MARILYN, we have spent a lot of time up in the area where you have family.  Dr. Dave opened his first private surgery practice in Healdsburg.  We sure love that area.  A cousin of mine has a place on the Russian River near Guerneville we still back there once in awhile. They get flooded out there occasionally.

Thank you for sharing the recipe, CALLIE.

JEAN, we talked to family in Panama City and they said it has been much too cool there this winter.  At least if you can have sunshine it sure helps.

Enjoy your detailed conversation about climate change, PATRICIA.  Thank you for sharing.

MARSGAL, so happy to read the kitties are now at the humane society and that you were able to give them the left over food and items that they can always use.

I hope you all had a good day....pleasant dreams to all.

Good Sunday morning yawl!  It looks like it will be a beautiful day here. A high in the mid 70's. Then turn cold again thru the week.  My cold is 40's - 50's.

On Wednesday morning, I turned on the coffeepot and nothing happened.  Geesh!  Well, of course the coffeepot is about 15 - 20 years old.  Thankfully I had stashed away a little 4 cup-per that we used to use when on a trip.  It served the purpose for coffee that morning.  On we went to Walmart for a new one, and were successful in getting one similar to the one that broke.  So that was our excitement for this week.  :-\

Jenny, thanks for your info on getting your shots.  We are scheduled for this Thursday.  We live in a community, and our powers that be arranged to have our county furnished us with the vaccine.  They are scheduling everyone that wants them,  they will pick us up at a certain time with a golf cart & take us to where they have the shots, then take us home when it is over.  I hope we have as good of luck as you had.

And that will be my excitement for this coming week.

Oh!  I forgot, another thing happened this week.  I phoned my daughter, it was her 66th birthday.  Now, how in the world did my child get to be this old.

Wishing you all a good day.

Good morning everyone. I am so glad I don't have to worry about the cats now. I can take my time shoveling out after the upcoming snow storm. I haven't checked the weather report yet to see if the predicted 6" has changed. It wasn't supposed to start snowing until this afternoon, but I just looked out the window and it has just started already.

Right now I am watching for Atlantic Huron which will be arriving shortly for a lay-up at Sarnia. The St. Clair and Detroit Rivers are icing up, though still flowing well so far. Griffin and Samuel Risley exchanged places with Griffon now at Sarnia and Samuel Risley at Windsor. USCG Hollyhock has not left its dock since it got back from Florida a few months back. Last I heard it was still down for repairs.

Today I plan on doing some needed housecleaning and a load of laundry which was also neglected the last few days. I did not sleep well last night so we will see how far I get before I lose steam.

Hope everyone has a good day. The temp is at 30o

Patricia - Looks like you have a few miserable days ahead, as far as weather is concerned.  I know you're already sheltered in place at home, so you can stay warm and comfortable, and not venture out.  Just out of curiosity, when you look outside, do you ever see people walking in this dangerous weather, or is that impossible?   Also wondering about those who go to work in retail - they have to get to their jobs somehow?  Or maybe lots of retail stores close in extreme conditions?

shirleyn - sounds like a nice convenient and comfortable way to get your Covid vaccine!  Being picked up and taken back home sounds like a real luxury.  We had a frustrating time scheduling our shots, and ended up almost three weeks gap between the two of us!     Your coffee pot situation sounds familiar - about two weeks ago, our 20+ year old  Mr. Coffee, finally made it's last perfect cup!  Fortunately, I had purchased a brand new, Mr. C, at Bed, Bath and Beyond, about two or three years ago, and had never opened it, so it, so it was all ready and waiting for me to start using it.  We started buying Mr. Coffee's, way back when Joe DiMaggio, was still alive, and he owned a piece of the company.    I highly recommend it for a perfect cup of coffee every time,  plus low price, and longevity!

MarsGal - Good to see that the sad job of placing George's cats has been accomplished, and you now only have clean-up and odds and end to attend to. How is Lily adjusting with your three cats?    I didn't realize there was any Great Lakes boat watching this time of year.  Today I'll take a look at my Duluth Canal cam, and see what's going on there.  I don't expect to see ships, but fun to look in the Wintertime, at all the people walking in the cold and snow, as well as the cars driving across the bridge.

Jenny - Your account of you Covid shots was very interesting!  We got caught in the first massive surge of sign-ups, and AJ got scheduled right away, but I still have to wait another week until Feb. 8th.  We have Stanford Health Care, and as soon as we got word that they were starting online scheduling - we signed up at the earliest dates available.  This was only for people who are 75 or older, so we didn't expect the flood of signups, and once you sign up, you cannot change your appointment.  Anyway, things didn't turn out as we had planned.   AJ has already had his shot, and I have to wait until the 8th.  :'(
It does sounds like you had a slight reaction to the shot, what with that tingling sensation?  When you go for your booster shot, be sure to mention it.

patricia19

Marilyne, nothing closes, people just prepare for the weather. Altho very few places have been open since last March other than essentials. Covid is still surging here with the largest group of new cases in the 29 to 20 aged group. The real dissenters are the military families who already decry the lack of lower 48 amenities such as gargantuan malls, water parks, huge concerts, and that sort.

MarsGal

I did get to see Atlantic Huron come in to dock this morning with the tug Pride giving an assist. The current on the river was quite strong. I noticed that Atlantic Huron took advantage of that and used little or no extra thrust coming in from the lake until it had to make the bend, and then it used just a bit of thrust to make the bend. That makes six ships laid up at Sarnia until the season reopens. Marilyne, there was only one other ship on the lakes this morning and the other one was not heading for Duluth. BTW, apparently Streamtime Live put in a new, better, camera at Port Huron and it looks like BoatNerd did the same.

The current estimate for snow here is 6-10inches with it snowing into Tuesday morning.

Other than that nothing going on to speak of.

patricia19

Good morning from a chill and windy Interior at minus 32.

shirleyn

Marilyne, you were smart getting a coffeepot before you actually needed it.  I was looking at them a couple of years ago, at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and thought no, I will wait until I need one.  Hmph!!  And I do have the Mr. Coffee pot also.  Oh, and the cost was $19.

Patricia, I do not think I could stand your cold weather.  This morning I had to go get my nails done and the temp was a little under 60.  I darn near froze getting there.

MarGal, your talking about the ships going past Port Huron reminded me of my youth.  That is where I am from.  On a summer evening my Dad would often take me and my mother down to the park, which was right near where the lake dumped into the river, and we would watch the ships go by.  A pleasant remembrance.  Thank you.

patricia19

Amy, you can always tell an Alaskan winter visitor. At twenty below, you will see folks in hoodies while visitors are dressed in so much outerwear that they can barely walk. Of course, it is dry, not wet, cold.

Marilyne

Patricia - I can't comprehend 32 below.  :yikes:  It rarely ever gets to 32 above, here in the Bay Area. The only place in California where it snows, and dips into the low temperatures, is in the High Sierra, near Tahoe, and other communities in the mountains.

MarsGal - I guess you're seeing plenty of snow today?   Watching NBC News last night, I saw lots of reporters in Penn, covering the big storm.  I hope you'll stay home with a cup of hot tea or coffee, and an extra blanket on your bed!  I did look at the Duluth Cam.   Not a single soul in sight.  Not a very nice day to go for a walk.

shirleyn  -  Ordinarily I never buy anything before I need it, so it was very unusual for me to buy the  Mr. Coffee ahead of time.  The only reason I did, was because I happened to be at BB & B,  and saw that they were closing out that particular model.  Ordinarily, I'm a last minute shopper for everything.  Even  my Christmas shopping was usually done during the final week.  Now I shop for everything online . . .  except for groceries.  I still make a quick trip to Safeway about every other day for food!  I've never been any good at planning meals ahead, more than a few days.
