MaryPage, you could write a memoir on just family life!

Happy Birthday to all the May babies! My younger sister, Rebecca, has hers on May 30th.

We have/had birthdays every month except for October.

Now I've never had a lobster roll but I would love to virtually swap you a King Crab serving for one of your lobster rolls!

Here in Maryland, our Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs are famous.  But Patricia, HOW in the world can you eat a whole crab from up your way?  Good grief, they are HUGE!!!!!

I suppose you learn?

patricia19

#19865
Sandy and MaryPage, we have both lobsters and crabs here in
restaurants and in stores, but I'm sure they're neither as fresh nor as good as what you have there!

King Crabs are more of a family meal.

King crabs are huge but so are most game animals, four types of huge bears, and fish here. Alaska is surrounded on three sides by oceans and the fourth by the Gulf of Alaska, so crabs, halibut, pacific cod, , prawns and even shrimp, etc.   https://tinyurl.com/rnpyxjvb are large and one of our largest industries.

However, most locals try to get them shipped fresh from the source by friends or small-scale entrepreneurs.

"Fishing in Alaska comes in multiple flavors. Tens of thousands of people harvest and feast on salmon, halibut, crab, trout, and other varieties of finfish and shellfish under subsistence, personal use, and sport fishing regulations. Connoisseurs of the art of angling try their skills in wilderness and urban settings."

I have found that food that is native
to an area tastes better when eaten in that area ...
For example Maine Lobsters taste better when cooked and
eaten in Maine.   And I imagine that Salmon for the
North West tastes better when cooked and eaten in the
North West.

I have found this to be the case when I
lived in Florida and Port Townsend Wa..

Food native to and area are better when  eaten
in that area.     JMHO, of course..
This includes fresh fruits and vegetables,  too!

That is so true, Sandy, or at least I have found it to be so. Regarding Halibut, King Crab, or Salmon, the local restaurants charge for the tourist trade, which is why locals either catch their own or deal with someone who deals locally and not with tourists.

Oops, I did it again....wrote my post. Left the site to look up a name of a restaurant that I enjoyed one of many Lobster Rolls and got side tracked.😆. Came back and fond my message GONE!   BTW that place is Woodman's of Essex, in MA!

I sure enjoyed reading all the comments about seafood.

Michele is working very hard to get strong enough to be able to get home.  Thy are hoping this can happen Monday.  Of course she wants to go home NOW🙏🙏🙏

Have a good evening.

It is bright and sunny here today.

Marilyne, I haven't seen a post from you for several days.  I hope everything is going OK with you, AJ and the family.

Things are pretty much the same here.  The news about the unmasking is good, but I noticed that when we went to the Credit Union Wed. no one was wearing masks except us and that was before the latest news.  However, on the way home we stopped at Publix grocery store here in town and everyone had on masks.  I think we will probably be cautious for a while.

Jenny, I sure hope Michele will be able to come home by Monday.  I'm glad you are getting along well after your fall and operations.

Thinking about Bubble today after hearing all the bad news going on in her part of the world.  Saw her beautiful sunset in the Photos folder.

Enjoyed reading the posts and I hope we hear from Marilyne soon.

The odds are extremely small that fully vaccinated persons will get Covid; but I keep thinking about those doctors who got it.  Now, they were working in the midst of and very close to patients sick with Covid.  And they got it despite their vaccinations.  Playing the odds, and that's what the nation as a whole must do, we won't get it.  But, speaking for myself, if I get it I am probably dead.  Just too great an age and too many existing conditions, such as COPD and Diabetes and Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure.  And more.  So I don't think I'll play those odds, thank you just the same.  I plan to keep on mostly staying at home.  And I'll hang on to and occasionally wear my masks when I have to venture forth, such as to a doctor's appointment.

Want to introduce you to Annapolis, over time.  We are the prettiest town (an incorporated city, actually) you can imagine.  A very watery community in a watery state, which is almost split in half by the Chesapeake Bay, a very huge body of water that is actually the largest estuary in the States.  The shores of the Chesapeake and the many rivers feeding into it combined contain more mileage that the East Coast, the Gulf Coast, and the West Coast combined!  We were first settled in 1649, when we were called Providence.  So we are old.  Sort of like me.  We have a huge population of retired, as we are a great town for the elderly.  AND a lot of naval officers are very sentimental about their Midshipmen days, and love to come back here to roost.  You might, indeed, you will, see some white headed old men with shaggy shorts on and moccasins or sneakers with no socks, striding down our brick sidewalks looking like complete nobodies.  The giveaway is their posture: those back are ramrod straight.  As for nobodies: well, that's what they wish to be, but chances are they were Admirals back in the day.  You might catch some Midshipmen salute one in passing, and you'll know that one may have run our entire Navy at one time.

Marilyne

Jean -  How nice of you to notice that I have been missing for a while.  I hope to continue to post on a regular basis, as I have always done in the past.  I've also neglected the Library~Bookshelf, which now includes both Television and Movies.  I'll post there again soon.

Like you, I'm also concerned about Bubble, and hope that things are quiet in her part of the country.  I remember the last time there was a Palestinian uprising,  (Just a few years ago I think?)  Bubble wrote here is S&F to assure us that she lived far from the fighting and turmoil.

Mary Page -  I'm with you, as far as "Covid caution", and mask wearing is concerned.  I'm just a couple years younger than you, and would never survive a case of Covid.  Although I have been vaccinated, I have chosen to continue to wear a mask when I'm in any public area, where there are lots of people.  I saw online yesterday, that comedian/host, Bill Maher, has tested positive for Covid, even though he is fully vaccinated! So far he is asymptomatic, but still, it does make you wonder?

I enjoy hearing about Annapolis, so I'll look forward to reading everything you have to say!  I'm partial to the Navy!  My father was drafted into the Navy during World War II, and served for three years.  I was old enough to be aware, and I remember everything.  (Eight when he was drafted, and eleven, when the War was over.  He served in the South Pacific.

Amy

MaryPage, like you ,if my husband caught covid it would be game over with all his health problems. We will be wearing our masks for a long time to come I think. Rather be safe than sorry.

Enjoyed your town and looking forward to reading more about it.

Good late morning, like the rest of you, I've been reading about Covid striking some previously vaccinated. As I understand it, there are three common possibilities. One is the two-week period between your second shot and the assimilation. Two is that it's suspected you may have already had a mild or asymptomatic case of the disease. And three is a variant as the disease is constantly mutating.

We already know that many, if not all, will need a booster shot this winter and then similar to seasonal flu shots as long as we don't panic and listen to only accredited medical information sites. There have been several discredited and conspiracy sites. Another issue is the many who refuse the shots out of fear, conspiracy theories, or political parties. It's estimated that most refusals come from White Nationalists and those affiliated with the Republican party or the Qnon conspirators.

Since the US has only 36.9 people vaccinated, even with new cases & deaths the lowest since April 2020, there are still those who believe in not getting vaccinated for whatever conspiracy theory and don't think of or care about others. Since 2016, many folks don't believe in established press sites and believe wholly in political sites for their news.

It is a large concern presently on how to separate actual science from political news, for example.

MaryPage, I wish I had been able to visit Annapolis or Maryland as I've only gone as far Northeast as West Virginia. Learning from your posts is the next best thing, so thank you for posting!

According to Alaska's Fish & Game, "Alaska has more than 40% of the nation's surface water resources including over 12,000 rivers, 3 million lakes greater than 5 acres, and numerous creeks and ponds. Annual migrations of salmon up the Yukon and Kuskokwim bring ocean nutrients into the interior -enriching riparian zones and feeding eagles, bears, wolves, and humans. Lush riparian areas are important to insect-eating songbirds in summer, and willow ptarmigan, snowshoe hare, and moose in winter. Rivers also serve as travel corridors for both people and wildlife, creating networks of water connections throughout the state.

Alaska interior river system.
Rivers are an important component of Interior Alaska's boreal forest ecosystem. They serve as travel corridors, provide habitat for fish and birds, and create unique riparian habitats for terrestrial animals."

We are behind most of the East Coast and Michigan (leading), followed by Maryland, on how wet we are.

When it comes to Covid or back in the days of Polio... we all have to do what WE think works best for us. In my case, I had Covid, super sick for 2 & 1/2 weeks. I stayed home alone, my kids left food on the porch for me & the out of towner had groceries delivered with her connections. Even with having open heart surgery (3 stents, aortic valve replaced), 2 by-passes & Congestive Heart Failure, plus high BP, high cholestrol, and any other number being considered.... I survived with only aspirin as a blood thinner, 325 because I don't take it every day.

When it comes to the shots, even my doctors don't push for me to get. I had cataract surgery, both eyes, since Covid and now have another doctor convinced MY body is not normal. The med used to numb the eyes during surgery doesn't work on me and the little implant of "whatever" used to prevent people from having to use eye drops for 2-3 weeks did the opposite for me. Red eye (conjunctivitis) for the 2-3 weeks. SO, 2nd eye the plan was to just knock me out & the anthologist repeated my daughter's suggestion of "give Mom about 1/3 what you give a NORMAL person". Had me out in a flash & the rest went fine. New glasses arrived today and I am ready to hit the road to MO for a few nights at the Lake. At 86 I have had a full life but plan to keep moving as long as I can, and do it MY WAY, as long as I can.

I did have to take BP pills because my regular doc looked me in the eye & told me "they wouldn't do the surgery if my BP was over 160/???". So I got the mildest script & cut in half. BP ended up still high but my daughter insisted we try a med for anxiety instead of BP when on the surgery gurney. Worked like a charm & BP dropped 40 points instantly.

My biggest concern is nobody believes an old lady when she claims to not be normal! I haven't had the BP pills for about a week, they were dragging me down too much. My mother had been given pills for high BP & ended up in the hospital nearly dead. Dad was given some & was sleeping around the clock until I raised **** and he was taken off. Nurses checked his BP often during the months Mom was in the hospital dying... always normal without pills. He lived to 95 and died because he didn't like life without Mother, took him 5 years to join her.

I happened to have voted for Trump because he was the only one running that didn't need money. If you check back over the years, quite a few Presidents came in as very poor people and went out with millions. During Trump's years, without ANY help from Democrats, he had the economy at a record high, peace instead of fighting in the East, my opinion, because the rebels weren't sure what he would do, and we did have a better control of illegals running & ruining our country.

I quit listening to news because it gets worse every day. This is not supposed to be a political discussion but we need to ALL respect each other's opinions and mine counts as much as anyone else. Already some have left the site because of the snipes, I will as well IF THIS POST GETS REMOVED OR MOVED. I am only offering rebuttal to previous comments. And now my BP is over the top so will shut up!

Sandy

Hi Shirley !

It is nice to hear your opinion and that
apparently you lived happily under Trump....

My happiest day was his last one.  And I have
been happy every since.

Love to all,

Shirley, I have said this before; perhaps you didn't see it? I believe you have a physical form of the Paradoxical Effect, paradoxical meaning a situation that exhibits inexplicable or contradictory aspects.

I have it, and for example, I will wake up under anesthesia during operations, and sleeping pills will keep me awake for 36 hours, be they OTC or proscribed.

I was once given Darvon at the dentist, and I became a drunk. Sinutab gives me a nosebleed, but antidepressants after my daughter's death had no discernable effect.

Convenience, chemically enhanced food can cause anaphylaxis.

For this reason, I'm cautious about anything I ingest, either medially or other.

I love the posts on geography. One of my grandsons lives in Annapolis area on Old Annapolis Neck Road.  Bought an adorable house close to an inlet a couple of years ago.

We've done a fair amount of traveling in our lifetime and have seen some beautiful and interesting places.  Unfortunately, we never made it to Alaska.

So good to see your post, Marilyne.

Today is bright and sunny and I've felt a little better this week.  Trying hard to keep on a balanced diet.

I have two hydrangeas, and I notice that one is just full of blooms and the other just getting started good.  Well, hope every is having a good day.

Marilyne

Jean -  Good to see that you're feeling better this past week.  Sounds like the med you're taking for your anemia, is working for you.  I also like to hear our S&F friends tell us about where they live, or about their hometowns.    I recall that you lived in Morocco, when Larry was stationed there in the military?  Sounds fascinating to someone like me, who has only traveled as far away as Mexico and Canada.

Jenny - I'm keeping the positive thoughts today, that Michele will be able to go home to her family.  I'm sure she is getting impatient, and needs to get out of that hospital.  Looking forward to seeing a message from you today!

Good Sunday morning, to  Sandy, Shirley, Mary Page, Patricia, Jackie, and Amy.   It would be so nice to hear from all of you again today!

Good Afternoon everyone,  from the breezy

Enjoy being able to go out now with out
masks all the time (some stores still require
them)  And hopefully everyone has had their
vacinations ,  that choose to have them ...

It is quiet in here today!  Where is everyone?

We are having another sunny day.  I planted two white agapanthus in pots last year and they are beginning to bloom.  In fact they have multiplied and look so pretty.  I was surprised that they came back so nicely without any help other than a little water.

I've been watching lots of cooking shows on PBS Create channel and hoping it would get me a little enthused about cooking, but so far it hasn't worked.

Marilyne, when I read about you going to Costco and buying those prepared casseroles, I feel a little envious.  I've never lived close to a Costco.  There is a Sam's Club too faraway to bother with.  This is a small town and and to do any shopping means a $6 back and forth across the bridge and the Choctawhatchee Bay to Destin which is close by on the other side of the bridge.  So we do most of our shopping at our local Niceville Walmart and Publix supermarket.  This is the first time I have ever lived in such a small town and I haven't really adjusted even after living here 5 years.  Oh well, that is my tale of woe today.

Jenny, hoping that Michele will get to go home today.

Bubble, there is a lot in the news here about your part of the world.  We can only hope everything calms down.

Patricia, I guess you are having some nice weather.  Are you able to sit out on your balcony?

Shirley, you mentioned going for several days camping?  Will your boys be going with you?

Enjoy all your posts.  Have a good day.

We have our historical section.  It runs downhill to our harbor, for the most part.  As is true of many towns with harbors, the u shaped type, at least, the part of town across the water is known as Eastport.  Not that Eastport is what you would use for addressing mail.  Nope, mailwise, it is Annapolis.

Eastport used to be where the blacks and indentured servants and such like lived when they went home at night.  Until a rickedy wooden bridge was built, they got back and forth by rowboat.  Today, of course, as is the way of History, you might pay over a million dollars for a waterfront lot there.  And then you would tear down the house real quick-like before it gets a plaque nailed to it designating it part of the Historical District, and build something costing more than another million.  Seriously.  Why would I make this up?  Besides, you can check it out for yourselves.

A few years back, oh, maybe 20 years or so, they decided to pave the very nice bridge between Annapolis & Eastport. Yep, a drawbridge., And do it all at once.  That discombobulated a lot of people.  Eastport people. They couldn't get to their jobs in Annapolis or elsewheres, or to their favorite restaurants or to the Ballet or to attend a concert or a play or a school event or ANYthing,  and it was an awfully long drive off the Eastport penninsula and on to the highways & byways that would get them where they needed to git.  And it was expensive time wise and gas wise.  So Eastport folk got real het up.

A few of them got together, and before you could say "Hail, hail, the gang's all here!" they organized the MARITIME REPUBLIC OF EASTPORT.  Seriously.  Nowadays, their black on deep yellow flag flies all over that peninsula.  They have a band, called "The Oyster Boys."  Actually, they're pretty good.  I'll tell you more later, as I have much, much more to tell.  Such as, you remember that once upon a time Admiral you might see on our streets?  The one with shoes, but no socks?  The no socks does not mean he has a cash flow problem.  It means he's a sailor.  You see, sailors wear socks all Winter, and never in summer.  The Maritime Republic of Eastport has a bonfire every year on the First Day of Spring.  Or at least, they used to.  So many sailors, men & women, had stinky old socks to peel off their feet to feed the bonfire, well, I heard they had FIVE bonfires this year.  That is just one of Eastport's fun things to do.

http://themre.org/

But here's what I'll bet you a cup of coffee you none of you know.  Unless one of you majored in or taught History.

Annapolis sheltered the Congress once upon the day.  Yep, I guess you could call this a one-time capitol of these United States.  Except that might be pushing it a bit.  I think you might have called us the capitol for about nine months.  And the Treaty of Paris was signed here during that time.  That officially ended the Revolutionary War.  I have tons more on this subject, too.  But lots to do and little time to get it done in.  So feed on this for a while.

Shirley

Well, Jean, you know how PLANS work out........I had a call from my sister & her husband is in the hospital, then took him on to Research Hospital in KC....he has lukemia and not doing well at all. Today they are thinking in days, so their kids are flying in to say their good bys. With 6 kids and all their grands, I'm not going to take what little time they have with him, but will be there for a funeral. They live not far from Lloyd. One of those times you can't plan but just try to be ready when needed. He is 91. I will probably just drive in the car with a son or both going with me, so we can come back same day/night. Anyway, I can't seem to keep on track today, start one job & find myself doing something else.

Besides my BIL not doing well, poor little CallieCat stayed out last night as did Tom & Tiger, but she looked so stiff this morning she hardly ate her breakfast and wanted to go into HER garage to spend the day in her heated bed. I woke her up tonight to walk down to the river but she decided not to walk down all the way. Have no idea how old she is but she wouldn't eat tonight and she loves her canned Friskies. She is a problem but for sure it will be sad to have her die. Hopefully these last few years have been better than her earlier life, at least she had plenty food & a warm bed!

Saw the beaver tonight, at least its head! Pretty good size. It was in the water & the water is bank level now. No fish at all, but they will be back when the water goes down. We've had off & on rain for days, but nothing like east of us, my sister in law in Overland Park, KS said her back yard is a lake.

Amy, got any suggestions for keeping gnats or little whatever hanging around the lettuce? OH, forgot to tell you, that site you posted the link to got me in trouble. Not sure what it was I clicked on that had something to do with veggies or recipes.... but my computer went crazy & locked up with a warning of virus & bunch of pop ups that I was sure a scam...so I shut down the computer 3 times but same pop ups & lock up (mouse wouldn't even work) & waited for son to come over & fix. Youngest got by first & with keys he managed to fix & download a new version of Avast... but in the process it put on THEIR browser & all kinds of extras so had to wait for the other son to come by & remove some of it. Youngest had gone on home after downloading & installing the new Avast, but couldn't wait for it to do everything, was taking hours. So I am being cautious about visiting that site, I'm sure they have no idea that somebody had tied something to it... think it was someone trying to sell or get into the computer deeper.

My day has been crazy, got up at 3:30am to check on cats, hate it when they all stay out. No idea what they do all night but all laying by the door waiting for me to get up. Fed them & me and went back to bed for a little while. Tiger stayed in, Callie wanted in her garage & Tom went back out. They are free to do what they want, except I can't trust Callie in any other part of the house & watch her like a hawk while she is inside. Her house manners are not the best.  :o

Good night to all.... my brain is "fragmented" tonight, feel like I am sleep walking. Do need a full night of sleep but the late night phone calls is only time some have time to talk.

Oops, you got in before me, MaryPage. I do love history & indulge myself in all the info I have of the little historic town my parents grew up in (Bonnots Mill, MO) The whole town was declared Historical & put on the National Register. My father was born in 1898 & his mother 1871, so I have a ton of "stuff" to find homes for. I gave some of the old McGuffey Readers to the Historical Society Museum in that county. Some were my gr-mother's & some my father's, & they had names, etc to prove they came from the area. I told cousins so they could visit & see the books their parents wanted to burn!  Shirley

Finally i have everything in place for moving to my new ( private rented ) two bedroom lovely bricks and mortar " ground " bungalow...Not moving far ( nice area, ) bungalow has large conservatory looking out onto back garden with grass, i cant wait to move in...Thank heavens i will be on the ground, no lift to have to worry about that keeps breaking down and having issues getting my mobility scooter carried down concrete stairs...i will also have windows and doors to the outside, I will be able to see and hear birds, have doors open to get plenty of fresh air coming in.. Strangely i went to look at this bungalow before our one lift issue...now all is finalised for my move into it, removals are booked, move in day finalised...To say my past few weeks ( going through the estate agents process ) have been very very stressful is an understatement....not done my MS any favours...

Good for you Jackie. My hopes for moving soon have been thwarted for the time being, so I am going to be spending a little more on fixing up the house, etc. I am having trouble finding a senior apartment complex around here that isn't income restricted or more of an assisted living/memory care place and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. There are a few apartment complexes, reasonably priced, that I like, but they all cater to families and none allow more then two cats. So, I will continue to do my clear out, fix stuff up to make the house more presentable, and probably wait until one of the cats dies, all the while keeping an eye out for an opportunity.

Last night I had the pleasure of watching three video clips of tall ships from around the world. I only recognized one that sailed the last Great Lakes Tall Ships event.

Good Morning from the
Spring like Rocky Coast of Maine.

So sorry Marsgal that you are having difficulty finding
a place that will allow more than two cats.  But you
have the right idea by staying in your home and
beginning the down sizing now.   So that it will be
easier for you when you do get another  place.

Congratulations Jackie for getting a new  place to
live.   It sounds like it is a place that will
be easier for you to live in    It sounds perfect
and I hope that you enjoy it  and the people
around it ...   It has been a long time
coming.    Good Luck ..

Have a good day everyone.   Everything here
is doing  well.   The main street here in Portland
is being ripped up and updated.    Lot's of work and
workers aound during the night,  when they choose
to work.   It gives me lots to watch ..

It should be nice once they get all the work done
and pour new  streets and markings for cross walks
etc.

Have  a good day,  Everyone!
