Fe went to her Kindergarten today
and while she was there ,  and they were waiting for their
turn to go inside,  she said to her Mother,
are they going to call me when we get home???

She didn't know that she was going into the
actual school room  ..  (one at a time of course)
where she got to talk to the teachers and they
got to know her.

Because of Covid,  she has been so use to
doing everything over the phone at home,  that she didn't
realize that school now meant going
to the School days now and being with other
kids teachers etc...

How very sad that is that our little Fe who spent
so many months going with her mother to nursing homes
and doing work with people from the Congo that have
moved here to Maine... But had to stop a year ago
because of Covid...    Her little life changed so
much ...  how awful,  for everyone.

But in September she will officially start
school in her school...  Again with other
people and kids her own age.

I think when you take a year away from a five year old,
that is a big loss  for everyone.

But the times are a changing and soon life will
become more normal in another way for Fe and all the
other little people who have suffered so
much from our Covid year.

Academically she is all caught up and doing great.
But socially she has to REACLIMATE to life after
Covid.

All is well,  so I am very thankful
Sandy

(This ALL SEEMS SO PETTY  when I think of people
living with WAR in their back yards  etc etc etc .. )

Sandy -  An adorable, prize winning photo of Fe!    That pose looks professional  I agree that one year of being isolated, is very hard on a young child.  Remember that most other kids her age are in the same boat.  Older school kids have had a difficult time as well.   Here's hoping they all adjust quickly, when school starts again.

Oh, Shirley: I enjoyed those pictures SO much! Thank you.

How lovely to see that adorable picture of Fe. Sandy Dapph & I have been exchanging photos since her Fe and my Ava were born.  As I recall, not very well, one of them is several weeks older than the other. Ava turned 5 on April 22nd. She has been lucky in being able to attend school classes without interruption, as she goes to St. Anne's, a private school run by Episcopalian nuns. She started in pre-pre kindergarten. I will ask Sandy to post a photo of Ava next to one of Fe. I love the name Fe, but absolutely adore the name Ophelia.

Shirley, how I wish we could grow wisteria, the iris is perfect with the dew drops on it. You have a fantastic crop in your trug! Everything looks so healthy. Beautiful photos!

Sandy, Fe is a little diamond in the flowers. Can't believe she is 5 already.....how time flies!

MaryPage, Ava is a little doll! I wonder, Sandy if Ava and Fe will ever meet? Now that would be something to be brought together by friends, family, and the internet! Both girls are darling!

MaryPage

I've wondered that recently, too, Patricia.  Who knows.  Isn't it fun, though, that they are each sort of cocking their heads in the same way and in the same direction.  I love sharing Ava with Sandy and getting Fe in return.  I imagine Fe a world famous actor who is known by only one name: Ophelia.  I think probably because I want her to use her whole name someday!  As for Ava, I think she may be headed for being an artist.  She started with that before she was a year old, and her attention to detail is astonishing. Other than that, she's just a sweet little girl.

MaryPage

Oh, funny story. The family tradition is to watch the Kentucky Derby on TV having had each family member put in a quarter.  The winner gets all but one quarter.  The holder of the ticket for the LAST horse gets their quarter back.  We've been doing that since I was little and we only had radio with which to LISTEN to that great race.

Well, John asked Ava which horse she wanted.  Ava looked at the pictures, and went for the one with the PINK blanket and the number 8. Not shy, Ava has told us all repeatedly, and will tell perfect strangers, even though they rarely ask, that her favorite color is pink, her favorite number is 8, her favorite planet is Saturn, and her favorite thing is the Disney Princesses.  So no one was surprised by her choice of horse.

That being the Winner of the Kentucky Derby!  Ava is In The Money!

Now that sounds like a five-year-old! The ones I've known of either sex seemed strong-minded.

On another note, I would have said Ava's the actress and Fe, the artist, just by their photos!

When my daughter was that age and older, all she wanted to do was sing.

These two following commercial, not mine, photos are of Fairbanks in the mid-nineties. What's changed is, (besides larger), is that the powers that be have kept us in pre-annual construction since 2010! I'm not sure if that's a good thing. These photos show the five rivers.

The following three photos are of wildflowers at the sanctuary, taken probably in 2019. The first is breaded irises. The others, morning glories, perhaps?

Oh, hooray! Oh, frabjous joy! I cannot stress strongly enough how much I love her name, Sandy. I do not "love" the name Ava, albeit I love my great granddaughter. Ava is one of those fad names now. Recently, Ava stopped being the only girl with 5 little boys in her Karate class, and the new little girl's name is also Ava. So the teacher announced they would henceforth be called Ava One and Ava Two, with our Ava being One. Our intensely (so far so good!) honest Ava explained in detail to her grandmother, my daughter Debi, that this is not because she is any more important than Ava Two, but because she came to the class first. I was very pleased with her doing that, but have lived through many tiresome waves of names in my life, and ironically Debi's name may well have been the worst. Debi was our 3rd daughter, and I had named the first two. So Bob said it was his turn, and I had to admit that was only fair. Well, he, along with half or more of the males in the States was in love with Debbie Reynolds at the time.  So he announced this precious baby would be Deborah and called Debbie.  Okay. Middle name? Oh, he didn't have one: I could do that.

There were, and I swear an oath to this, FIVE baby girls in the newborn nursery at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland that June 14th, 1955. Two Deborah Annes, two Deborah Janes, and one Deborah Jean. When Debi became a Pom Pom girl at Herndon High in Herndon, Virginia, there were 5 or 6 Debbies on the squad. I swear. We made our Debi a Debi as opposed to a Debbie just to help her stand apart a little.

Patricia,I am not sure but I think they are columbines.......hope someone else can help out.

Colorado Blue Columbine Aquilegia caerulea

patricia19

Thanks, Amy and Bubble, for the assist! There are wildflowers, such as the daisy hidden among the columbines, all over the sanctuary, and alongside roads and rivers. It shows nature's use of birds and other animals to propagate.

Sixtyfive miles up the Salcha River, far from the bridges, lies a garden hedge for several miles on a peninsula. There are many trimmed in Fairbanks, decorating yards and parks. I don't know the name for that type or how it got up the river, but its seeds are in a type of pod similar to a string bean, and you can snap them when they dry out and release the seeds.

I included the first two commercial ones because I'm always talking about the five rivers and the resultant creeks, streams, sloughs, lakes, and hot springs just in and by this city. In the late eighties and nineteen hundred (1903), this city was started by a passenger bumped off a paddle wheeler. He and his wife started a trading post; a week later, an Italian, Felix Pedro, came walking out of the woods with an enormous gold nugget,  and the world poured in.

So, in the scheme of history, this city is very new.

Lovely trees, I used to live on Dogwood Street by the University that was lined with the trees until "Urban Renewal" came along and took them all out.

LOVE LOVE all the pictures here.

SHIRLEY, I can not believe how big and full your trug is!  Beautiful wisteria and the iris is spectacular.

BUBBLE, that sunset is beautiful.  I, too, continue to pray that you are safe from all the bombings/missiles. So sad to watch the news coverage from there😞😡

SANDY, darling picture of Fe.  Hard to believe she will be in kindergarten in the fall.

JANE, the Dogwood trees were blooming when we were in Arkansas and they were so pretty.

Of course I love the Columbines....my state flower.

The Dogwood is the state tree of Pennsylvania and I've loved it all my life.  It seems wherever we went when I was younger, I'd spot a dogwood tree.  When I had a chance to get 2 of them, I jumped at it.  Sometimes, when they're in bloom, I just sit on the porch and stare at them and the rest of the year, they're a sweet memory!

Oh Jane, that is just such a great phot0 of loveliness.  My idea of perfection. I had no idea Pennsylvania claimed the dogwood, too! All of my life I have thought it was only we Virginians who had it as our state flower.  We claim only the wild version.  I think of the wild white dogwood and the redbud in unison; I suppose because they always bloom in the old wooded places at around the same time.

Flowers, trees, and all manner of garden greenery, plus our birds, are all guaranteed to lift our spirit..I found myself for a short time this morning sitting on a bench out in our residential homes front garden, ( our weather is warm sunny and pleasant today, ) of course no one else sits out there but i only gave up to come back in as we have ongoing machinery doing work on the outside of our property and as the machine had started up, the machine noise was a tad noisy to frighten off any birds..I did sit there long enough to take a good look around at the odd colour of flowers that were showing themselves, and saw some lovely brown-red Acer Firecracker plants ( Japanese Maple )...Quite a pleasant setting, shame no one bothers to sit out in it, even if this garden is at the front and a faint noise of traffic going past, although hidden, it would still be a peaceful haven to gather ones thoughts....

...Thank you for your photos...

The dogwood is lovely, JaneS. Yes, MaryPage - dogwood and redbud. Such a super combo. The woods behind my childhood home were filled with them, along with wild cherry, blackberry brambles and poison ivy. Of course, they inevitably got replaced with houses. Even now I resent that the old Fox farm, which had a herd of sheep, no longer exists except in my memory. What wonderful times we children had exploring the woods about the farm, taking picnic lunches, picking cherries and blackberries, getting all scratched up from the brambles and itchy from the poison ivy.

patricia19

Jane's photo of the dogwood tree is the same as we have here. I never thought much about it as dogwood and chokecherry trees were city parts of the boreal forest of paper birch, spruce, tamarack, cottonwood, and alder.

"The forests found in Alaska's interior are known as Boreal Forests. These forests extend from the Kenai Peninsula to the Tanana Valley near Fairbanks and as far north as the foothills of the Brooks Range. They stretch from the Porcupine River near the Canadian border and west down the Kuskokwim River valley. Species with commercial value include white spruce, quaking aspen, and paper birch. Other species include black spruce, balsam poplar, and larch."
