I think Jane's lovely dogwood is what we call Japanese, or Kousa Dogwood. It is easier to grow and maintain than is the wild variety that grew in the Virginia woods before the Europeans arrived.

Shirley

Dogwood is also Missouri's state tree & much loved. When young, even during WWII, on trips from Sedalia, MO to where my gr-mother lived in Bonnots Mill, MO, we knew every spot of dogwood & red bud and watched for it like it was gold. 30+ years ago we lived in Leawood, KS for 2 years and I would drive up & down the streets when dogwood in bloom. They had the pink & white, and one tree was planted together so it really did look like one trunk with both color blossoms. The trees were old enough to be enormous for dogwood.

Fascinating! Georgia has a city called Vidalia. The names sound so much alike, I wonder where they came from. Were they female names? I do not recall running into any such names in either older literature or History.  I wonder if dalia has a meaning. I'll try to find out.

MaryPage

Dalia comes from Arabic & Hebrew, in short, the Middle Eastern Semitic tribes. Did you know the Arabs and Hebrews are from the same family roots? Not surprising, really.

Well, dalia means a strong branch. And yes, it's a girl's name in Lithuania. I wonder what the prefixes mean in the names of these towns. Was there a River Se or a River Vi? A strong branch of a river would make sense to me.

Vidalia is a type of sweet onion and Sedalia is a part of the entire Boiron family of homeopathic medicines.

A Vidalia onion is a type of sweet onion. It has a mild flavor, a unique flat shape, and a relatively high sugar content. The soil in Vidalia, Georgia has an unusually low amount of sulfur — that's why this variety is more sweet than sharp. It doesn't have the pungent, intensely acidic flavor of other onions. Vidalia onions are native to Vidalia, Georgia. In fact, it was named Georgia's official state vegetable in 1990.

Long-time homeopathic medics say  Sedalia Tablets relieve nervousness, irritability, hypersensitivity, and fatigue due to everyday stress, and related minor digestive problems. This non-sedative homeopathic medicine will not impair the ability to react to stress. situations.

Evidently, these towns were named after a common area plant.

From Lithuanian dalis meaning "portion, share". This was the name of the Lithuanian goddess of weaving, fate, and childbirth, often associated with Laima. There are ideas that the name Dahlia may have its roots in the Lithuanian language but some disagree.

so_P_bubble

The name Dahlia is a girl's name of Scandinavian origin meaning "Dahl's flower".   The flower was named in honor of the pioneering Swedish botanist Andreas Dahl, which means dale. In the Victorian language of flowers, Dahlia denotes elegance and dignity.

When we lived in England (65+ years ago) one place we lived was a "row house" in High Wycombe, Bucks.... had a walk thru entrance to the sidewalk on the back side that was private to the back entrance to the houses. The front entrance opened onto a busy street with only the width of the sidewalk separating the house from traffic. Some of the neighbors had gorgeous yards, one in particular had Dahlias blooming of every size & color, unbelievable how pretty. And the mind wanders on of those years..... Cas was stationed at a "secret underground base" that joined Wycombe Abbey, the girls school.

What an interesting group of messages about Dahlia!
Bubble - I had never thought of the flower Dahlia, or the girls name, as being derived from the Swedish, Dahl.   So many Swedish surnames beginning or ending in Dahl.   Dahlquist, Dahlgren, Dahlberg, come to mind, and my daughter-in-law's maiden name,  Engdahl.

Tomereader1

Patricia, I use a lot of those Boiron products, but have not heard/read of sedalia. May not be available here in the lower states.  Will look on-line.

Wonderful to see a picture of Don. Hope he is doing well.

patricia19

Bubble, how wonderful to see Don! He's looking good. I understand how he feels. My last haircut was done by a friend of mine who happened to have been a navy barber in his youth. I need to ask Dora if he's available.   ;)

Shirley

Hey, Bubble, if he lets the mustache grow & does the twirl on each side with wax, he is ready for Christmas! I expect that is a pain trying to eat with, though. He is looking good, better than the last photo?  I thought he looked too thin then. Thanks for sharing news & photo of Don.

It is super hot & humid today, time out to whine. :-[  I pulled out all the lettuce from the trug this morning, it was going to seed & little bugs/gnats or something. Will wait until fall to plant some new, maybe the tomatoes will quit growing, at least the Early Girls. Can't believe how many little green tomatoes on. I think I should have done a better job of pinching the "suckers" off. I actually did Google but didn't understand all the instructions (I know, NOT rocket science). We will see how it goes if & when they start to ripen. So far birds are not a problem with 3 cats standing guard down below! Wish the bugs would be afraid of cats!

Hey, Shirley, I have a humongous purple & white coffee mug with the letters KSU on it.  It was a gift from my great granddaughter Emily when she was a student there.  Emily spent five years in the Architectural School.  Or do they call it the School of Architecture?  I honestly don't remember.

They first have to get accepted by the university.  Then they apply for the Architectural School and, if accepted, they are in it for 5 years and a masters degree and a certificate saying they are an architect.  But they are still not licensed architects.  What they do is, they get jobs with firms headed by one or more licensed architects, which is what Emily did.  Some of them stay in that position for life, having their work appear over that licensed architect's name.  Others, like Emily, sweat the books some more and take a bunch, something like six or eight, grueling state-given examinations. When & if these are all passed, they are licensed!  It takes YEARS! Our Emily, now age 27, has only two more tests to go and she is done for Life, with a bunch more letters that mean absolutely nothing to me behind her name.  I do know what CPA and M.D. mean, but that is about the limit of MY education in that department.

I have a granddaughter, she's not a great granddaughter like Emily, but is one of my 13 granddaughters, Angela, who did the same sort of routine to get to be an Actuary.  She spent 5 years at the University of Oklahoma.  Or was it Oklahoma University?  But only because she changed her major after her first year.  She has now passed all but the last one of her exams, and in the meantime has been working for an insurance company where she is now a Vice President and head of the Actuarial Department.  She'll have an extra bunch of letters when she finally gets over the Finish Line.

I want to live to hear each of them on the other end of my phone saying: "Hey, Gran!  I passed my last test!"

Each one of The Thirteen (I have no grandsons) is far, far more talented than I.  I have enough pride in them that you'd swear, though, that each one takes after her Gran.  As if!

What a large, smart, and lovely family you have, MaryPage! For some reason, my favorite has always been Will.

MaryPage

You'll never in life find a sweeter human being than Our Will, Patricia.  As sweet; yes.  But none sweeter.

Will is twelve years old now.  He is on the Autistic spectrum.  He has Asperger's Syndrome.  Of all of the emails I get (we all, in the family get) in our family whip-arounds, his are the dearest.  He has a very special voice, and it doesn't bother him that he is different.  His mother, my granddaughter Melissa, sent us all a picture of herself, Adam, her husband, and her daughter Bella and son Miles in their very clever, homemade Halloween costumes last October.  Everyone asked where Will was, and Melissa added a photo of Will sitting outside in an Adirondack chair with jacket & slacks on reading a book and drinking a cup of tea: a usual place to find him.  Melissa's comment?  "Oh, Will: he's going as a 45 year-old man!"

patricia19

I only know Will thru you and first heard about him from your emails regarding Bella's trip with, I believe, her grandparents? But I knew even then that he was going to be somebody!

Shirley

Mary Page, one of my gr-daughters started out in architectural at KU (not K-State) & decided to move back to Wichita & go to WSU.... after interning with a local architect firm she switched to Industrial Engineering (like her mother... her father is Electrical Engineer). She worked for an aircraft company until after her first baby & then went to a company building plants in one of the South America countries so kind of back to her first love. She had thyroid cancer that was quite a shock, removed & then had another baby (both kids are fine and so is she).

She then went to one of our biggest companies here & seems to enjoy whatever she is doing. I haven't really gotten to talk with her or any of the "kids" for a year but think that will change when 4th of July comes. I don't dare take any of the shots but since I did have a rough round of COVID, Dr ran the test this past week for anti-bodies & I am SAFE, have antibodies yet (Covid was last week of Oct & first week & half of Nov.)

Both my gr-daughter's & her husband's parents offered to take care of kids, her husband's mother was already running a day care & my son had retired from his main job so could offer not only one day a week to take care of his grands, he volunteered to pick up & deliver to all the activities other days. He has since been called back as "contract" hire for the aircraft company & teaches 2 graduate classes at WSU plus has his own business of putting in security systems for homeowner's associations... and helps his mother so much. He is in CO right now and first time since the boys were 12 & 14 (they are 58 & 60 now) that I haven't been with them! The younger son is driving out tomorrow. boo-hoo.... can't take the altitude anymore. More than you cared to know.... :-[

Has anyone heard from Bubble? She has been missing since posting the photo of Don. Hope it's just a computer glitch.

Supper time in Kansas & want to go down to the river to see if fish have returned. They have been gone for weeks, since the river got so high. It is down some & the trees the beaver cut down didn't float away but the stumps have greened up so it is a mass of young sprouts, can hardly get out to the water. I think we have chiggers down there, can't see any fleas but am getting some bites when I don't wear my tall rubber boots with bug spray on them. We had sand fleas some years but with all the little bunnies running around, fleas, plain old black fleas, may be starting up. Sure isn't mosquitoes where these bites are!!! I need to double check cats & put the stuff on them, too, not an easy job for one person.

patricia19

Bubble has had a bit of a virus but will return in a couple of days.

MaryPage

Shirley, Every Scrap of your family news is of interest to me, I swear!  All individual biographies are fascinating, especially with the fact that for so many of us Life has turned out to be like a strong river we have been carried down despite our original intentions or dreams.  Very few, really Very few, of us has actually been firmly in the driver's seat in the matter of where our lives have taken us.

Wishing Bubble well.  Happy Saturday to one & all!
