Marilyne...you gave me a chuckle, " i think it started with a K " i am guessing that you could not care less what the brand was called, you just wanted to get out of Costco...

Callie...well-done to Miss Ellen, she is moving up the ladder in the theatre world...

Callie, i love it here in my new bungalow and i know i will be happy here, this is a home...just one person missing who should have been here with me...

Thank you each for the kind comments about Miss Ellen.

Jackie, not sure this means she is "moving up" because she'd like to perform in musical theater but I think it's great that she was asked to portray the Nanny; she didn't have to audition. Best thing is the SAG points because you have to perform in a SAG related venue in order to get the points - and members are always ahead of non-members at auditions.

She has a beautiful lyric soprano voice but refers to herself as a "dancer who can sing" because, she says, she can't "belt" - which is pretty much required for a lead singer. Neither is she a particularly good actress. She'd be happy to be a "gypsy" which, in musical theater terms, means someone who goes from show to show in the Ensemble.

MaryPage,  loved your comments on the loud voice.  My college sorority once did a musical version of "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" for the annual campus Variety show.  I was assigned to be the backstage scream when "the shot rang out".  It came out like a gargle, the audience laughed (inappropriately) and I was immediately fired!!!!!

I was, however, the Queen of Hearts in an elementary school play and I thought my hours of practice so I could faint dramatically when I heard the Jack had stolen the tarts were quite effective.  ;D

MaryPage, I would have liked your stagecraft position; I'm impressed! But then heights and I have current issues.

I was in Drama Club in high school my last two years and was behind the scenes. During play preparation, I mainly provided labor, and during acts, I and the others attempted to scramble to change the sets quietly. Have you ever tried to haul things back and forth quietly?  ::)

...I had to look up what SAG meant as it is to do with America... " the Screen Actors Guild was an American labor union which represented over 100,000 film and television principal and background performers worldwide "
...well they say we learn something new everyday, no matter how old we are...

Rats! lost my post in the middle of typing. Oh, well, here goes again.

So sorry to hear the Bubble is under the weather. I hope she recovers soon.

Interested to see the news about Miss Ellen.

I found a bit of excitement last evening. The people who bring you the live cams at the St. Clair River, StreamTime Live, now have one up and running at the Soo Locks. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrtIIVfi-5tMlVXdMDzOMUA Baie Comeau went through last evening as I watched. The cam is up high enough to pan the whole area.

Still a bit rainy here this morning, going back up to around 80o later on today. Very humid.

The house looks nice after its bath, but the doors are sticking because the old wood soaked up the water and isn't drying out quickly because of the humidity.

I was sorry to hear about but very interested in your exhausting experience with the Costco Hearing Aid Center, Marilyne, since I'm contemplating making an appointment with them.  My ten yr. old Phonak needs to be replaced and I understand that Costco sells them for a whole lot less than my ENT doctor does.  But, there is no way that I could go through all the walking around and the long, long hours that you had to endure so I'm rethinking.  I'd be interested to hear how you like the aids when you finally get them.  Luckily, I only need one aid since the hearing in my right ear is completely gone and can't be "aided".  Also, I'm trying to decide if buying an aid with Blue Tooth is worth the extra cost.  Right now I have only three devices that are Blue Tooth compatible but with progress ever going forward that will undoubtedly change in the future.

I hope Bubble feels much better very soon.  Thinking good thoughts for her.

Love and Healing for Bubble.

Jackie, I have no first hand knowledge of SAG, but do have some faint, from a distance fragments.  My granddaughter Jenny got her degree in Communication, and while she was at college she performed in a lot of plays, both musical and not so.  She thought she would go into acting, but got married and started having babies, winding up with 4 of those.  The old story we all know so well.

So she has worked part time ever since for Public Radio.  KCUR in Kansas City, Missouri.  She does weekends, and fills in for the regulars when they are out on sick leave or vacations.

A number of years ago, she called to get my opinion re her joining a union.  She said she would be able to get work like voice overs and commercials.  It was a bunch of money up front, but one time only for that.  I thought she should.  She did.  And she has been happy about it ever since.  One of the children was the most adorable thing in this world when he was little, and he got some commercial work as well and all.  Now he is in college at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he is on a full, 4-year scholarship in Music.  He has just finished his 2nd year, and is composing some marvelous pieces.

Come to think on it, Our Jenny is on the radio as I type.  Now that I have a smart TV, I can actually get her loud & clear, all the way from Kansas City!  The advances of technology are terrific indeed!

Marilyne

Phyllis - I hope I didn't totally discourage you from going to Costco for your new hearing aids?   Looking back at the time spent walking through the store, I wish that one of us had thought about going out and getting one of the grocery carts.  To lean on the handle for support,  would have been much easier than walking and clinging to my husband's arm.   He isn't all that steady on his feet either, so it was good fortune that we didn't both fall on the concrete floor!   I'm pretty sure that Phonic, was one of the brands that I tried, and also the Costco brand . . . which was the lowest price of course.  The set that I purchased was Rexton or something similar?  I left the paperwork in the car, so I'll check later for the brand name.

Jackie - Now I'm thinking it started with an R, and not a K.  ;D  Well, the two letters do look similar!  ha ha.    Good to see that you're settling into your new home.  This place sounds like it's far better than the last one, and much more comfortable the someone with MS.

My breakfast is waiting, so I'll return later to say Hello to everyone else who has posted.

Vanilla-Jackie

Marilyne...if you are anything like me, it probably starts with a letter that looks-sounds nothing like an R or a K... ;)

Good Morning,

Amy, thank you for the news about Bubble.  Loving wishes for her recovery and being able to join us very soon.

MaryPage,  Ellen could pay to join the SAG union now but it would be waaaaay beyond what her budget would allow and would only grant her "first group to audition" privileges - not guaranteed roles.  I'm sure there are dues and such but, if/when she earns a certain # of points (can't remember the number) by performing in SAG-related venues (which not all theaters are), she doesn't have to pay to join.
I'm learning so much about the way the business side of performing works.  It's not an easy "profession" - no matter how many accolades are received during school days!!

MarsGal,  I discovered the new Soo Canal camera just the other day - and really like it. Used to have the old one earmarked but didn't like it at all.
I've had the "Stream Time" site earmarked for a long time and regularly follow the cams at Port Huron, Marine City and Algonac.  Also enjoy the one that's along the river past Port Huron - but it's not on the regular list.  Have to scroll down the side list to get it.
I enjoy reading the chat, too.  Wonder what they'd think if they knew "ladies of a certain age"  ;) across the country are following and discussing the cams on-line?  Have you ever considered posting?

My current project(s) is/are writing essays/stories about my parents and grandparents.  I've had all the genealogical facts/figures charted and in albums for years but wanted the grandchildren and beyond to know about the "people behind the facts".
I've completed one about my mother and her two sisters and am currently working on my Dad's story, which is proving to be quite a challenge!  He wrote memoirs of his experiences in WW1 and I have them plus some original letters he sent to his parents before he was sent to France.  Challenge is sorting out what to include and what isn't necessary for the story  plus researching a few events he mentions but doesn't explain.

Am 'on a roll' with this and, since the softball tournament is over , I have no other Plan du Jour.

"Settle down, Callie and get busy" :knuppel2:

Good morning from a bright and sunny Interior with not a cloud in sight at 7:51 AM! We're in the mid-fifties presently and headed for the mid-seventies. I imagine all the children and adults who're off are making grand plans for the day.

I need to return and have my hearing retested, but not until February's medical bill has been brought down more.

The closest I've been to anyone making a living as an actor was babysitting a toddler who, as an adult, has acted in various soap operas for the past thirty years. I wouldn't recognize him today, and I'm sure I never made a lasting babysitter impression with him during those early months.

Thank you, MarsGal; in bookmarking and following your link, I was able to see a ship go through the locks!

My family isn't as close as yours, Callie. Or like yours, MaryPage. My older sister, not a pleasant person, has alienated everyone, including her two adult children. Unfortunately, that means this side as well. All I know is the son is married, with a six-year-old daughter, and his sister has lived with the same boyfriend she had in high school for the past twenty-two years.

My younger sister and I have no idea where my older sister is, and no one is unhappy about that, sad to say. My point is that I enjoy reading about families that are close and enjoy that togetherness. My family comprises my younger sister, her family, and a  network of decades-long local, close friendships. Many of my Internet friendships are almost as long, so thankfully, there's that.

MaryPage, well written and enlightening even if from twenty-two years ago. By Anthony Bourdain, from April 12, 1999, it's no wonder he went on to various television documentaries. I was sorry to learn of his death a year ago, last June 8th.

I forwarded this to a friend who recently retired from a local inspot.

MaryPage

My family, it is true, is the Joy of my life.  However, some of them would not be anyone else's cup of tea.  Some of them are not even OUR choice of closest of kinfolk; but you know how it is.  We love 'em the way they come, and when they come, we are not all that hot and bothered to see them go.

A dear friend of mine of years & years ago, my gosh she's been dead a long time now, used to tell a story I am pretty sure I've told in Senior Net and/or Seniors & Friends.  But I'll remind you of it again.  Mary was of Irish descent, and she swore her grandmother in the Old Country had this to say about families and life situations:

If the whole town came together around one big table and each dumped their troubles on the table in front of them and then looked around and took in what everyone else had brought with them, well, Each would grab their own and run straight home!

And I'll tell you what: I think that is true.

So when I brag on my family members, which I am more than happy to do, please remember I am skipping whole patches of the story.

Marilyne

It's only natural, and we like to brag a bit, about our adult children, grands and great grands, as well as brothers, sisters, parents, etc.    I love to read about all the S&F families, but I admit that I'm sometimes slightly intimidated, and I don't usually or rarely ever,  offer my 2 cents worth.  No doctors, lawyers, CEO's, entertainers, college professors, or research scientists in this family for me to mention!

Our son and his wife, are the only ones who give me modest bragging rights.  Of our three grown children, he is the only one who graduated from college, and has gone on to a successful career as a Silicon Valley computer engineer.  His wife, the same.
Our two daughters have worked hard all their lives, but only in the 9 to 5 world of office jobs . . .  with some retail thrown in to get by financially.  Neither one of them went to college.

The next generation, our  grandkids are all doing extremely well in the big Silicon Valley computer companies, like Google, Twitter and Intel.   The pay scale at those companies is extremely high!   No wonder young people are arriving from around the world to work here!   Endless job opportunities  for those who are college grads.

And yes, we do have some younger family members who are "estranged" from others,  and one who has disconnected completely,  and is not on speaking terms with her siblings, her mother, or anyone else in the family.    So sad,  but seems to be a common situation in lots of families in today's world.
I think that situations like that were rare back in our generation?   My parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, all got along together, and seemed to genuinely love and care about each other to the very end of their lives.   No strife and infighting, that I was ever aware of?    It's a stressful world we live in now, compared to generations from the past.  Young people are under so much pressure now, in so many different ways.

Marilyne, back in the day, there was a lot that people didn't speak of. And women needed support for their families with no birth control and no cash income of their own. Divorce was whispered about and not in a good way for women. Issues were just not talked about. I was an adult before I found out that my mother had been married before. And that was after her death in 2000.

All three of us went to college, but none of us worked in fields utilizing that knowledge. And all three of us had scholarships and or paid for our own courses. I worked in retail or hotels my entire career, retiring after several years in middle management. Even then, the corporate mindset ruled supreme.

My younger sister owned two scrapbooking stores in Idaho and sold those to retire. Then ended up going back to work managing a hospital's business office before retiring for good. My older sister, once a nurse, sued someone, won big, and is still, I suppose, living off that. Her son is an electrical engineer, her daughter, a potter.

And that's it for that family.

Phyllis - Costco is supposed to have one of the lowest prices for Drugs, and I suspect Hearing Aids. Having to walk around in their store is a real test of actual conditions, while a simulated test is just that. Hopefully someone can be there to help you if you get too tired of walking. Let the person serving you know how you feel about walking. Maybe they can find a cart or something so you don't have to walk. But, a real life condition test is better than simulation.
Good Luck

Rick - Glad you've decided to start posting again, and good to see you here in Bait andTackle!   As I mentioned earlier to Phyllis . . .  walking around Costco was difficult and tiring, but it would have been much easier if we had thought to go outside and get a shopping cart,  which would have made us feel more balanced and secure.  Also, if you don't want to walk at all, the audiologist can give you a simulated  sound test, right there in the soundproof room.

Callie - I'm so looking forward to the upcoming season of  Mrs. Maisel, so I can enjoy seeing Miss Ellen, once again!   Interesting to learn how the SAG union works.  I can see that it makes sense to build up your resume points, in different venues, so you don't have to pay to join.

Time for me relax in front of the TV, so I will say goodnight to all who are still up and about.  It's only 7:30 here, so I have about three hours before bedtime.

Rick - I hope to see you posting here again tomorrow!

Have my first new carpark church service this afternoon, will travel in my mobility scooter, our today weather is going to be hot, now i need to order online a waterproof mobility scooter cape that covers both me and the control panel, for when our UK weather changes to rain-heavy rain, which forecasting says my next journey midweek is likely to rain, may even thunder, ( as you know, our UK Summer is very unpredictable ) also looking online to order a 3 or 4 inch  threshold ramp or door line bridge to get my fold-up mobility scooter out of my conservatory door, not easy having to lift it by myself being disabled with MS, and this is rented property so i cant afford to cause damage...conservatory flooring is wipe over, no carpeting, has electricity sockets for re-charging its battery, so the best and safest place to store it, plus i can keep an eye on it from my living room the sliding door...

So good to see you back, Rick, and thanks for the encouragement about shopping for a hearing aid at Costco.  I've done some on-line research and Costco's prices are very good in comparison with prices at an independent audiologist so that interested me.  Since Marilyne added that a cart would help I feel a little better because wherever I go my Rollator goes with me.  Also, my son will be with me to help.  I still think 3 hours is excessive but I haven't ruled Costco out yet.  I'm glad to have the information before I make a decision.

Phyllis  -  My appointment at Costco, was at 3:00 pm.  We arrived back home at 6:00 pm.   The drive home took a long time, because of the commute traffic between 5:00 and 6:00.   Costco is quite a distance from our house.   Also, as I said before, my audiologist was extremely meticulous, and did parts of the hearing test multiple times.  Although in general,  I prefer afternoon appointments, if I had to do it over, I would make this a morning appointment.   This would work better for a number of reasons.   Mainly, I was already tired when I got there at 3:00.  By three in the afternoon, I have already been up for eight or nine hours, and I'm ready to relax before making dinner.

A good Sunday HELLO to all. I am sorry Ihave not posted but I hope you all will understand that I do not have much to say at all EXCEPT thank you for being here and giving me a place to come in and read about what ever you have to chat about😘

Sadly, there is nothing good to report about Michele.  She is declining much faster than any of us are prepared to accept.  Hospice is involved and we are praying that Dave will accept more help from them. Michele has decided that the end is near and sadly we think she is correct 💔🙏 I wish more than anything that this were not where we are, but Michele has fought harder than pretty much anyone could as you all well know💔🙏All of your positive thoughts and prayers have meant so much to us and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts❣️

Happy wishes to all.  We are here with the family everyday now to assist any way we can💞

Jenny -  Hospice is a wonderful thing, and will help all of your family during this terrible time. They will be there to help Michele, and keep her free from pain.  I'll be thinking about you and  Bob,  and I will be praying for Dave, and the three children, and special prayers for Michele.

MaryPage

Yes, I love Hospice to bits.  They were here for my Bob's last week, and they could not have been nicer, sweeter, more anxious to be helpful in every possible way.  And that they were.

God bless you and each and every one of yours, Jenny.  I wish I could mitigate your pain.

Jenny,  I agree completely with the positive comments about Hospice Care.

May God bless each of Michelle's family with His comfort, His strength and His love.  My love and prayers are with you, dear friend.
