Jenny, I truly believe in my heart she needs to hear that she lives on thru those children. She has taught them how to live with pain, gracefully and with dignity, and they will brag to the next generation how brave and loving she has always been. My heart goes out to all of you, and I am in awe of how willingly you have shared this journey with all of us. May God give you strength to help each other during the days ahead, my thoughts & prayers are with you. Shirley

Jenny, I can only repeat what the others have said about Hospice.  They are wonderful and will ease this difficult journey as much as anyone can.  My prayers go out for Dr. Dave and the children who have walked every step of Michelle's long, difficult road with her.  And to you and Bob who have always been with them in every way.  Words are never enough but I can only say I am so sorry.

This is an absolutely gorgeous day here on the bay.  The sun is splashing all OVER the place, the air is as clear as can be, the shores of Kent Island can be seen across the broad span of water where all kinds of boats are scurrying about doing their thing, and the humongous Bay Bridge stands sentinel to the North.  This is Flag Day, so I have taken our flag out to the back deck and it is dancing about in our lovely bay breezes.
Also, this is my daughter Debi's 66th birthday.  Hardly a day, and rarely a week, goes by in this family without a birthday.
Blue pots full of many different shades of pink geraniums line the railings of the back, bayside deck.  They make me heart happy.
Wishing you all a lovely day.

Marilyne

Mary Page - Thank you for reminding me that today is  Flag Day!   We have a holder outside in front, and I'll take our flag out as soon as I finish this message.
Sounds like you have a lovely day to enjoy, with perfect weather.  Our day is looking good so far, with bright sun, clear skies, and just the slightest of breezes.  It's still early here - 8:30 - so will likely get hot by mid afternoon.

Happy Birthday to your daughter Debi.  She is three years older than my oldest daughter, who turned 63 on May 7th.   I'm looking forward to seeing her, and my granddaughter, on Friday.  They will stay with us over the Father's Day weekend, and we'll all be going to son and dil's house for Sunday dinner.

Hope everyone looking in this morning is having a "rare" and pleasant  June day!

CallieOK

Merry Monday!

It's a lovely day in central Oklahoma - "rare"  because of  :hot: temperatures and very high humidity.

HOA crew is supposed to fertilize yards today.  They take good care of front/back lawns and trimming shrubs in front but do not trim/weed anything in the individual back yards.

Son-the-landscape-architect designed my back yard beds planted with perennials that bloom in sequence all summer.
However, he's facing serious back surgery next month and, so, his brother is coming later this afternoon to weed/trim those.

Most in my neighborhood, including me, have had flags out since Memorial Day and will leave them out until July 4th.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

patricia19

Good morning. It's one rare day here without a cloud in the sky, and we're back on our way to that 83° or higher that we reached yesterday.

Nothing on the horizon except housework that I put off all weekend and a computer account tweak here and there. Oh, and a phone call is needed for a lost account number. I hate those! To add insult to injury, their hold music is always tinny and off-key.

MaryPage

Having been an "Army Brat," I was raised having to learn the Flag Code for the flag of the United States, and I flinch at how much and how often I see that code ignored and our flag dishonored.  It does not, of course, bother most citizens because, for reasons I've never understood, that code is no longer taught in our elementary schools at the time of raising and lowering the flag for the day.

Two or three biggies: the flag is not to be flown in rain or snow or storms, unless it is an all-weather flag made for that very purpose.
The flag is not to be flown overnight unless a spotlight is on it to light its way.  When I was young, by act of congress, there were only two, as I recall faintly, places where this was possible.  Now, too many places want it to be a 24-hour flag with a spotlight; so they have relaxed the rule about the places the congress named.  Of course, in battle the flag may be flown until there is a victory or a defeat.
The flag should be whole, not ragged.  Every flag should be treated with honor and the code of caring for it should be followed faithfully.

Shirley

Mary Page, I've squirmed because so many are flying the flag at night without spotlight around here. I think I left ours out one time in all my years, and waited until morning to bring it in even though I did wake up & remember. But opening the door would have awakend the entire family and that would have been a bigger problem since my husband always had trouble falling asleep & would probably not have gone back to sleep the rest of the night! I am shocked at what the schools are not teaching anymore. By the way, I found that the Boy Scouts will handle the disposal of ragged flags, any size. I was very proud that one troup in my parents area placed small flags all along their street one of the holidays..... they were almost in tears it meant so much to them.

The job I planned to do today didn't get done.... got side tracked & ended up pulling lots of clothes I don't wear, out of one closet while searching for my "fav" summer work togs. I have looked every place I can think of and of course, they are in a logical spot so I could grab them if I wanted to "head out". I did come up with some things I forgot I had, but still fit & are comfy. I do have a few items that are all cotton knit that will make great cleaning rags. I doubt if anyone would take them if donated so would go for rags for someone else!  Have boxes of stuff to donate one of these days. Right now a nap sounds good!

patricia19

MaryPage, once upon a time, you sent me a picture of Bob and his security title. I've lost that somewhere and wondered if you could email that to me again?

I know the flag is flown here daily as that is a maintenance duty, and some also fly it from their balconies on holidays.

For those who enjoy grizzly salmon fishing, the Brooks Falls Brown Bear Cams are live again!

Amy, many of them are still just leaving the den now. The best time is late summer, early fall when the salmon return to spawn, and there are dozens of bears everywhere!

During the summer, it's like watching the ship or other wildlife cams. You sometimes see them and sometimes don't

Shirley

That water looks so cool..... beautiful spot but I didn't get to see any bears this time. Will bookmark it, thanks, Patricia.

I am dripping wet, been cleaning out the garage & even hosed it out. What a mess. Everywhere I look I need to get rid of STUFF. Even a remote control golf cart hanging from the ceiling & 2 bikes in perfectly good working condition. Goodness-goodness-goodness!

Thanks for the graphic, Amy. Callie, both of my sons are camping together in CO... I'm so jealous, but happy for them. Sorry to read your son has to have back surgery. I am SO leary of back surgery, hope and know he does have, a good surgeon, but will send good thoughts & prayers his way.

CallieOK

Shirley, their Dad would be surprised that neither son goes back to the mountains.  #2/dil discovered scuba diving and that's the direction they go.  #1/dil prefer to go fishing in Oklahoma lakes although they may try mountain streams now that they're truly "empty nesters".

This isn't the first back surgery son has had but it will be the most involved. Same surgeons and he likes them.
I'm more concerned about his continual pain and current anxiety issues ; just hope he makes it emotionally until surgery time in about three weeks. Fortunately, his wife is very supportive.

Patricia,  #2 son/dil have been fishing in Alaska and I still have some filets in the freezer from the salmon he caught and had shipped home.  He also had pictures of bears closer to the fishing boat than I'd be comfortable with!!!!

Something colorful to enjoy on a hot Summer day!
You all know how much I love china and dinnerware - especially vintage, but also like the new patterns.  I got this email from Replacements, LTD, and I'm enjoying looking at  pictures of their bestsellers.  Some of these date back to the 40's,  and others are relatively new.
Take a look and see if any of your favorites are there? ❤️

MaryPage

I love them all, especially the blues, but collect none.

What I collect is Early American pressed glass goblets.  I had quite a good, albeit not a huge, number of these, and I still do despite having broken some (Sob!) and given some away to granddaughters.  I really need to make an arrangement to have them take the rest, but have not achieved that goal as yet.

If any of you are not familiar with these, there are whole books written about them.  I loved the ones my grandmother used on a daily basis.  They were clear colored Hobnail.  It was at her house I became addicted, as I am not really a collecting type.  However, I have collected only the colored ones.  There were approximately 3,000 patterns in all, and only about 500 of those ever came in colors.

When it was normal for brides to start married life with a full set of flatware in their own silver pattern, and to have a pattern of good china dishes and everyday dishes, and a full set of goblets, wine glasses, tumblers, etc. in their own crystal pattern; only upper middle class and the rich could actually do this.  The rest did without or had much less expensive substitutes.  These made-in-molds regular glass goblets were all the rage, and every young woman had her favorite pattern, even if she was not in a position to own a set.

This is one of the books I own.  I show you just to have you see the goblets on the front.  Remember, about three thousand patterns to choose from!

Callie, I have a friend whose husband worked in Fish & Game fisheries most of his now-retired life. Each time he came home with new fish or game, I always got some freezer cleanouts. I still do but not as much.

I love local fish but not the canned products; I much prefer the filets. They are so good, as you know. Try one with a little brown mustard seared on the meat.

MaryPage

My apologies.  I did not do something right there.  If you don't know what a silver service is, you can Google it and ask for Images.  When my girls came along, we just could not afford the sterling silver sets, so we settled for pewter ones in the Paul Revere pattern.

Marilyne

Mary Page -  I love the pressed glass, in all the various patterns from companies like Fostoria, Heisey, Fenton, etc.   When you're enamored with dinnerware and china, as I am, then you also have to have the glassware that looks best with the various patterns you collect.  The only set I have left belonged to my Mother, and is a thumbprint glass, in a pink color.  I also prefer the colors, with my favorites being pink or blue.  I have a couple of sets of silverware, but prefer to spend the money on china or glassware.  I should have used the past tense - preferred - as I don't collect anymore,  but I still enjoy looking!

Patricia - your Mother had lots of beautiful and valuable items.  Too bad you and your sisters didn't save some of it, but I understand that at the time, it probably had fallen out of favor, and nobody wanted it.  Now, some of the patterns of china, dishes, glass and silver, are popular with collectors, and go for a high price.  Other patterns are very reasonable, and fun to collect, without spending a fortune.

Jean -  If you happen to look in, be sure to look at the link
I posted, and you will see your pattern listed - "Butterfly Garden".

Callie -  I remember that you have a Christmas pattern, that you might recognize from all those pictures?

Beverly

Jenny - I am so sorry to hear Michele is failing.  :'(  She has fought a long, brave battle. With Hospice, she can be at home with her children. This must be so difficult for the whole family. You and Bob have been there for them since the beginning. Hugs and prayers for all of you.

CallieOK

Marilyne, I did find my Christmas china! It's by Nikko.  Also found my "wedding china", Coronet by Syracuse.

My "everyday" pottery, Red Rooster by Poppytrail (Metlox) is also there.  I've offered it to all three of the Grands when they've set up their own households but no one was interested because it isn't "dishwasher safe".  (Of course, I no longer use it for the same reason  ;) )I suspect it will be the same with the china and Christmas dishes.

I happened to go into a Dollar Store  when Ellen was setting up her kitchen and actually outfitted her with settings for four in dishes - plus serving pieces and matching "linens" for $50.00!!!!

Still waiting on some written feedback re, my MRI Scan of over 2 months ago, told by telephone by MS Clinicians secretary this morning ( my GP chase-up ) who i have not met Clinician face to face yet, just a brief booked call, who is due another booked call end next month...Secretary mentioned i have deteriorated, well i didn't need her to tell me this, i am living this PP-MS body, i know that already, that is why it is called Progressive...She obviously was looking-reading from my notes that i would be a candidate for Ocrelizumab ( Ocrevus ) this is the only drug available for Primary Progressive, this will not cure it, MS cant be cured...

" In Multiple Sclerosis (MS) your immune system mistakenly attacks myelin around your nerve cells. This causes inflammation and damage which stops your central nervous system (CNS) from working properly. OCREVUS works on your immune system by targeting and removing specific B cells which play a role in MS.." administered by intravenous infusion every 6 months...
" There is no present like the time "

Marilyne

Not a big crowd in here today . . . probably most of our members have wilted in the extreme heat?   It's 96 degrees right now, according to my back yard thermometer, but that will seem  cool tomorrow, when triple-digits will arrive.  Summer used to be my favorite season, but that was when I was young and strong.   A 100 degree day used to energize me!  I loved it back then . . . but those days are gone forever.

Callie -  I looked at the selection in Replacements, for Syracuse Coronet, and saw a beautiful teapot.  I remember that you like tea, so hope you have one?  Also, the teapot in Red Rooster, is very attractive, and in a unique style.  Speaking of - I think I mentioned that my mother had a set of Red Rooster, and washed them in the dishwasher for many years.  Didn't damage them at all.  I put all of my old dishes in the dishwasher also.  However, I never put the fine china in the DW!

Jackie -  So glad you finally heard back about your MRI scan.  Two months is a long time to wait!  I hope you get the Ocrevus, soon.  I know it isn''t a cure, but will likely slow the progress of your MS, and help you to feel a little better.

CallieOK

Marilyne, the only Syracuse "serving pieces" I have are two platters, two serving bowls and the sugar/creamer.  I do have the large Red Rooster coffee pot, which is another unique style.
Interesting that your Mother successfully washed those dishes in the dishwasher.  Maybe I should get mine out of the attic and start using them again. Agree that fine china should never be in the dishwasher - nor should sterling silver.

The most popular sterling pattern in 1958 was Frances I - or something like that.  I knew I would never have the life style for such a fancy pattern so mine was Towle Candlelight, which went along with my Mother's Gorham Estruscan.
I used both when I used to have holiday family dinners but haven't done that in quite a few years and should probably do a bit of silver polishing.
However, I have no idea where that particular Round Tuit is and no plans to hunt for it!  ;D

Our temperatures are typical for June but the humidity is making it feel about 20º hotter and it isn't very pleasant to be outside until after the sun goes behind the trees.  Then, of course, the biting things come out.  We get sprayed for mosquitos but all I have to do is step on the grass and the chiggers (or, as they known around here, "no-see-ums") attack - even when I've sprayed myself with repellent.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

MarsGal

Hi all!

I am in the process of getting estimates for a porch renewal and and two new doors. So far, I called two people, one said he would call back when got to the office to schedule an appointment and never did. The other, who my sister recommended, was here a little earlier today. So we shall see what he comes up with.

Did anyone watch the Chinese launch three astronauts? I believe they are going to be in space for three months working on their space station. I watched until they deployed their solar panel.

It is another lovely day today. Two cool nights and days that barely make it to 80. Humidity is low.

CallieOK

Marsgal, I didn't see the astronauts - maybe because I was busy watching the new cam at the Soo Locks.
It's 100% better than that old one because it's up in/on a building and we can actually see the ships approaching and entering the locks - plus a good view of the water rising or falling while they're in. We can also see ships going on the river beyond the locks.

It's listed on StreamTime along with Port Huron, Marine City and Algonac.

Good luck with your remodeling projects.

Marilyne

Callie and Mars -  I'd like to see the new Soo cam, but I haven't been able to bring it up on YouTube, or anywhere else?  If one of you could post the link here, I would appreciate it.  :)
I remember the old Soo cam, as being Mary Ann Tock's favorite.  She had visited the site a couple of times with her parents when she was young, and she loved it . . . although she said many times that the old original cam did not do it justice.

Temperatures in parts of the East Bay Area, reached 106 degrees today, but here in the  South Bay, we only got up to about 102.  San Francisco's,  high was a chilly 69 degrees, and they're only 30 miles from us.   We have what they call "Micro Climates",  all around the Bay.   The coastal cities can be downright cold - but drive a few miles inland in any direction, and temps can jump 30 -35 degrees.

CallieOK

Marilyne,  this YouTube site should have the Soo Locks, Port Huron, Marine City and Algonac listed - along with the Lake Hood Seaplane Base in Anchorage, Alaska.  I click on the site I want to watch and use the "back arrow" to return to the site with the list.

https://www.youtube.com/streamtimelive

Marilyne

Thank you Callie! -  I just looked at the Soo Locks cam,  it's a beautiful sight, with all those lights on the water!  I'll check it out again in the morning, and hope to see a ship in the locks.  Also I'll look at the other cams as well.  The only one I had, is Marine City, which has always been one of my favorites, along with the Duluth Canal.

MarsGal

The ships sure creep through the lock, don't they? Love the view. It looks like they are only using one lock. Does anyone know what construction they are doing on the other side?

I just saw an LCM on the St. Clair River at Marine City. It is headed for Hancock MI. The people posting didn't seem to know what kind of craft it is. I could tell right away it was a landing craft that someone has rigged for, at least temporarily, living quarters complete with porta-potty, overhead tarp, clothes line holding several blankets or large towels, etc. Sure enough, when I looked up LCM, I found a Wikipedia page on the craft. LCM stands for Landing Craft Mechanized. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_Craft_Mechanized Next chance to see it will be in at least three hours at Port Huron. Check its' progress on Marine Traffic. https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:-82.1/centery:42.7/zoom:10

In another development on the homefront, I have to call the plumber because my toilet is on the blink. The bowl is not holding water. I am not sure what to do about that. Of course, the one in the basement which I hardly use is leaking around the flapper- again. That I can fix.
