JeanneP, I'm not sure, but I think when we replaced the fixtures in my childhood home, the installers broke the old tub in half so they could get it out.  Since it was at least 25-30 years old, I think it also was cast iron.

You would find the fiberglass tub narrower than the cast iron tub but I haven't taken a tub bath in years, just showers.

Hal, you know where I'm coming from, even to having the same type of professor, English Lit!

He also could tell, he said, what type of books I read. I was evidently using English spelling rather than American and some English expression were finding their way into my creative writing attempts. He mentioned that this would not be the best idea to continue. In my defense, I was also taking a class in European battles of the medieval period for History, so I was reading many old journals from that time period.

Molly

ANGEL - I enjoyed reading about your experiences in the English classes and interaction with your Professor.  I spent several years as an English and Humanities teacher for International students at the University of Maryland.  Many of the students I met were from Asia, but had been in classes in their home Country with Visiting Professors from England.  Thus, their understanding, speaking and reading skills were more focused on Europe than the American English reading and speaking sills.  We often discussed the differences in class, encouraged clear pronunciation of American English and enjoyed getting to know each other.   In later years, one of the Students was my Dept. Chairman when I served as a Visiting Professor in China.

JeanneP--A friend had one of those tubs that slips over the old tub.  She's very satisfied with it.

Mary Ann--I didn't realize those cast iron tubs were THAT heavy.

Molly--I enjoy reading about your teaching experiences.

Molly, I think I told you once that the course I was taking was University of Maryland extension course and my instructor was a Professor Macintosh who was a visiting professor from The University of Edinburgh.  His specialty was ancient Greek.  His wife taught French, before they split and she returned home.  He and I became fairly good friends, even to the point of me doing some makeup work at his home and having a beer in the process.

I really enjoy world literature since so much of the writings took place in the surrounding area.  Professor Macintosh even taught a quick study of the bible although we could never get him to admit one way or the other his belief.

Hey, and I might add I passed his course.  I don't suppose you ever run across him, Molly.  He was not really, really old, but he was well pass middle age.  The year was around 1962.  And you would have been a very young lady in those days.

Here are more unusual uses for coffee filters.
Hope this post isn't too long......don't know if there are limits.....

UNUSUAL USES FOR COFFEE FILTERS

Ever buy the wrong size coffee filters? Instead of bringing them back to the store, here’s some other uses for them.
Even if they aren’t the wrong size for your coffee maker, they can still be a perfect solution to many small problems around the house.

Use them to clean your cable connectors. If you’re internet is lagging or your TV picture is fuzzy,
it might be because the connectors on your cables are dirty and they need to be cleaned.

They’re the perfect fix to stop bleeding from razor nicks when shaving.

Use them to absorb the grease from fried foods. Put them on the plate and put your french fries, bacon and other fried food on top.

Use a coffee filter to cover dishes when they’re cooking in the microwave to prevent messes.

Use them to clean windows, mirrors, television screens and glasses. They’re lint free, so they won’t leave any residue behind when you’re done

Stop that Popsicle from dripping all over the place. Poke one or two holes in the filter and put the stick(s) through it.

Line your plant pots with a filter to keep the soil from leaking out of the drainage holes when you water them.

Put a filter inside cast-iron skillets to absorb excess moisture when it’s not in use to prevent rust and other wear.

Separate your China and other good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish.

Did the cork break into your wine? Use one to filter the cork out.

Use a coffee filter to apply shoe polish.

Put baking soda into a coffee filter and put it into shoes or a closet to absorb and prevent nasty odors.

You can even put potpourri into the filter, tie it up and put into your drawers, etc

Use them to safely store your Christmas decorations and other small, fragile items.

Use them to store nails, screws and other small hardware so that they don’t go rolling all over the place, get lost or mixed together.

You can use the cone-style coffee filters to safely pour in oil and other liquids into your car’s engine.

Use them as bowls for popcorn, chips and other snacks.

Liquids or something else spill onto your floor, sofa or other upholstery? Use a coffee filter to clean it up because unlike a paper towel, they won’t leave behind lint.

Wrap them around tacos shells or hot dogs to prevent the grease and other things from spilling out.

Have a wobbly table or chair? Use a folded up coffee filter under the leg to even it out.

Did you run out of dryer sheets? You can put a few drops of fabric softener on a filter, rub sides together,
and put in the dryer to help prevent static cling and make your clothes smell fresh.

Diffuse the flash on a camera. When you’re taking a close-up, soften the brightness by placing a coffee filter over the flash.

Serve pita sandwiches. A circular filter is the perfect size for carrying a sandwich on the go.

Wipe off smudges.  In a pinch, you can use to clean eyeglasses, camera lenses, televisions, and computer monitors.

Make a bouquet garni. Tie up bay leaves, parsley, or other herbs in a coffee filter. Drop it in your stew or soup pot,
and easily remove it when you're done cooking. Recipes often suggest cheesecloth for this process, but a coffee filter is an easy-to-find alternative.

Use for sewing projects. Coffee filters make a great backing for embroidering or appliqueing soft fabrics.

Make tea bags. Wrap loose tea in a filter and tie with a string.

Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.

Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale

HAL - Indeed I do recall you mentioning the course you took with the Professor.  And I also recalled that you really enjoyed it!  Glad you had that opportunity.
I never met him, since I had not joined the University of Maryland yet.  At the time you mentioned, I was living in Montana and getting ready to give birth to David.

I turned on my AC dehumidifier about 10 this morning and it is still on. Comfortable in here all day. Went up to 89°. More than 30° that we had yesterday. Someone here is getting tired of the way the library looks. People take out books and just put them back anyplace, mix hard covered  with paperbacks. Whoever it is has books all over, even brought in a folding table and it is loaded with books. I know every time I went in there I wished I had the stamina to arrange them.

MARY ANN  those “Golden Years” sure come with a lot of problems we never had before.

LARRY  you will miss those Wednesday night suppers. I don't know of any church here that does things like that.

HAL  looks like you had a rough workout before you got to the place of that procedure.  No wonder your BP was high. Like you when a friend or family member drives me to appointments I always repay them in some way, usually a meal on the way home, or on a hot day like today ice cream is usually what we stop for.

JOAN  jaw feel good already. Wore the new partial for a few hours. Will have to call the dentist, a couple of spots will have to be fixed, rub in the wrong places. I was surprised she wanted me to put it in so soon. Every few hours I will use some salted water and let it sit on the place where the tooth was. I have always done that and it stays clean and heals fast. Glad I do not have that white coat syndrome.

PATRICIA  been too many years since I was in school and don't think I care  prepositions or split infinitives or grammar any more. Spell check is OK with me.

JUNE  like you I was so worn out yesterday I slept great. Laughed at what your hair looks like in the morning, mine is the same, at times it looks like my hair is styled like a Mohawk, all sticking up on top of my head.

JANE  hope you heard back from your doctor. Terrible way to get home from a vacation.

AMY  nothing smells as great as the aroma of home made bread just from the oven.  My moth is watering just thinking of it. I don't think you know the meaning of rest, you just cannot stop doing something.

JOAN you and me both with fresh homemade bread. A slice while warm with real butter melting into it.

AMY  love rhubarb but never saw any jam, did you make it?

JEANNE LEE  now that bread sounds healthy, it has oatmeal in it. I used to put molasses on a slice of bread and enjoyed it.

MARY ANN your slaw today sounds quite different. Anything with cranberries has to be good.

JOAN  I try to spell right but know I make mistakes. Mainly it is hitting the wrong keys. This keyboard is small and I am still having trouble getting used to it.

JEANNEP  one son   put in the all in one fiberglass tub when he bought his house and did a lot of remodeling in it. The tub started leaking into the cellar. He checked and found a small crack in the bottom of the tub.  Good thing he works in remodeling because he had to cut and remove the tub part and get just that part to put in.  They would come upstairs to shower in mine.

JOAN  ever use a big cast iron frying pan?  Just those are heavy.

JEANNE LEE from your post looks like some new ones. Will be fun checking them out.

OLDIESMANN  I think we will all have some fun using the new ones. Thanks for bringing them back.

DONKLAN  I knew quite a few of these uses for coffee filters. I use then for washing windows and such, like the no lint. If anyone checked my flowerpots they would find coffee filters.

JANE  hope you sleep good and feel a bit better in the morning.

MYCHEAL  what year did you write on the contract? Maybe he thinks 2017?

Good night everyone.

Donklin, I saved your coffee filter info with Screengrab. Thanks!

Gloria, correcting myself is just one of my little habits,  :whip2:. Another is trying to eliminate the words, but and also as I use them way too often.

I am on the new computer, first download was PSP12U. What in the world is Unchecky? One of the things I found preinstalled on this PC.

I stopped by the Organic Co-OP on the way home and purchased what I believe to be an African daisy. It is lavender with a white inside. The latin name is Osteospermum. The variety is called Summertime White. Is anyone familiar with this flower?

Joan, I don't think it was only because the cast iron tub was heavy, but the tub was built into the area and had to be cut to be taken out.

I sleep on my left side and you should see my hair by my left ear when I get up in the morning.  I am sure some women would love the style, but I don't.

I've been watching the Weather Channel and the tornado in Kansas.  The main tornado seems to be in northern Kansas, but I did see that Wichita is under a tornado watch (not warning).  Stay safe, Shirley.

June Drabek

hi all, I am tired beyond tiredness...left this apartment at 9:30 am, home just long enough to put leftover chicken in fridge, which I am now holding in my left hand and one finger typing with my right hand.

Chicken is eaten.

I got back to my apartment about five o'clock. Had Bible studies..my son is a perfect teacher. I think he is an actor really, he so firmly believes in what he is saying, he almost acts it out. I do hope pride in my son is not sinful..I had nothing to do with his preaching, and others love him too, so I guess that kind of prideful appreciation for what God has done is his life is O.K. I hope so.

Next on the menu was a visit to the library, then on to lunch, then on to a program called current events and a discussion of same, then on to root beer floats and visiting with the Pastor of Rowntree and his very knowledgeable wife. I was leaving for home and a nap, and here came a nurse looking for me. I had completely forgotten an appointment with my doctor. I see her once a month. Had it on my calendar, but the rememberer flew out the window. As it turned out, I was still early, but the nurse wants all our vitals before we see the doctor. Had a good visit with her..she feels like a good friend, very comfortable, and never in a rush.My B.P. was way too high again, so she is going to prescribe a diarrhetic for me. I already take more than the normal amount of B.P. meds. so then my day was finished. And so am I.

Have a very peaceful night my dear ones. I read all your messages but did not take notes, so please forgive me for not acknowledging what you posted. You know I love you, I keep you in my prayers, I send you warm hugs, and I am so happy to have you as my extended family.God bless dear ones and sleep peacefully. June
As long as we are here, let's dance.

I see you are enjoying the new emoticons!

I was watching some coverage on TV of the tornadoes and was surprised to see that one had done some damage in Bristow, Oklahoma. That's where we lived before moving back to Vermont. We still have friends there.

Mary Ann - I still have the cast iron frying pan my mother had. I like to use it to bake corn bread. Very heavy!

Amy - I used to make rhubarb jam. Since the color wasn't that appealing, I added some strawberry Jello while cooking it. Nice rosy colored jam!

Donklan - Thanks for the list of uses for coffee filters.

Good night all.

Angelface, I smiled at your definition on getting old -older....." these aren't our "golden" years as much as an "iron age" and we're rusting! " Ha ha you couldn't have put it better....

Jeanne Lee, yay, we have got our smiley's back, our little emoticons....

We took a trip to vets yesterday, just that since we have moved here dogs are picking up the odd ticks, on the fur, on our carpet.....this one was embedded right near to Benji's eye...never a problem where we lived before, and before we lived more in the countryside....After different vet, a lovely, friendly, helpful female vet took out the tick, she recommended a flee and tick collar that will keep them at bay for 8 months, I jumped in and said " we will take two " one for our Toby, when she told us how much for, we both gasped but had to go along with it, £40 each, when I got home I checked for the same make- brand of collar, and found I could purchase online for half of what we were charged..... plus we were also billed £30 something for the privilege of removing just a tiny tick....a very expensive tick this was, the final bill came to over £120 -125.....oh and that was including a cheap pair of tick tweezers....

As Benji is due in five days to go under anaesthetic for teeth cleaning, gum infection...( he is 13, ) the last thing I wanted was the tick to cause him toxic infection...especially I had already messed up by pulling out half of its body....

Halkel, I too wasn't sure what you meant by..." left a seed in my stomach area under the skin which kinda stung..."

My shower suction bar is due today, I don't plan to use it for putting my weight onto it, just need something to touch for steadiness, re, my balance and dizziness, and the feeling of claustrophobia enclosed in the centre of the cubicle.........I have just this minute ordered three different shower mats, couldn't make my mind up which one to buy, so I went with all three,... that is ok as the cubicle will fit two, I will be left one as a spare....and of course I will use the most comfortableness of the three, as I have a very uncomfortable lump under, to the corner of my right foot that hurts when I stand bare foot on floor...not a bunion but under a removed bunion, where I filed away some hard skin...feels like some raised bone...

Larry Hanna, I haven't yet ordered a shower stool, I will wait and see how I get on without it, but I have shortlisted 2 or 3.....I did have my first shower in it yesterday morning, and it was far better washing my hair under it, as I have trouble bending my neck,( brainstem disease, ) there is something linked to my neck and top of leg that sets a strange vibratory sensation off....all part of the nerves to do with my MS....so this is a bonus to bending over a sink or a bath with a hand shower......

CHUCKLES

Cheap Suit

The fellow was being sold a very cheap suit. "But the left arm is a lot longer than the right arm," he complained.

"That's why the suit is such a bargain," the sales clerk explained. "Just cock your left shoulder up a little, like this, and tuck this left lapel under your chin a bit, like this."

"But the right leg is way too short," argued the customer.

"No problem," the sales clerk answered. "Just keep your right knee bent a little at all times, walk like this, and no one will notice. That's why this suit is only thirty dollars."

Finally, the fellow bought the suit, cocked his left shoulder into the air, tucked the suit's left lapel under his chin, bent his right knee, and limped out of the store toward his car. Two doctors happened along and noticed him.
"Good heavens," the first doctor said to the second, "look at that poor crippled fellow."

"Yeah," answered the second doctor. "But doesn't that suit fit great?"

Food For Thought

My Eternal Resume
(By Sarah Lindberg)

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." - Matthew 6:19-21

God has done a lot in my life. I have watched Him be extremely faithful, answer some prayers, teach me to forgive again and again, help me to love in new ways, and so much more. He is quite amazing! In fact, this last month God has really been working on me regarding what my Eternal Resume looks like. That's right! You see I have two reunions in the Fall and I started to think, "What do I have to show for? What will I have to say when I'm asked those famous questions?" I was going down a never-ending road, but God caught me. He showed me that my Earthly Resume isn't worth much. It will collect dust and fade away in time. But all the things I do for His glory and honor will last for eternity! All the things that can go on an Eternal Resume never fade away.

So here are a list of questions I'm asking myself almost daily, as I focus on what my Eternal Resume will look like for my Savior and King!

- How am I reflecting the work of God daily?

- Am I responding in love?

- Have I offered hope to the hopeless?

- Did I share the peace I've found in Jesus?

- Was I patient today?

- Did I show kindness to my neighbor?

- How often did I slow down to listen?

- Did I stop to share the healing power of God today?

- Did my words reflect the work of the Savior in my life?

- Was I faithful to take the steps of a righteous man?

- Have I been merciful to those who need mercy?

- Did compassion flow from the outpouring of God's Spirit in me?

- Was I gentle with my answers?

- Have I forgiven all wrongs?

- Did I bring joy to someone today?

My Eternal Resume will not look like the things we gather on this earth. I'm seeking something that's bigger! I want to know that I left my mark. That I shared Jesus in every possible way to everyone I come in contact with. Not just with my words, but much more so with my actions. May my actions speak of a love greater than this world can offer. May my actions reflect the joy I have found in Jesus. May my actions show the abundant peace I have in a God who never fails!

This is my prayer! May this be my Eternal Resume!

Challenge: Read Matthew 6:19-24, 1 Corinthians 13:1-8

Apply the Word: What does your Eternal Resume look like? What are the questions you need to ask yourself daily?

Memory Verse: Matthew 6:19-21

"Dear Father God, I simply pray that You will help me focus on all the things I can do to build an Eternal Resume for Your glory! Please examine my actions and my words daily! Help me to see any area in my life that is not glorifying to You or demonstrating Your love!"

Living with Eternity in Focus,
Sarah

Thought of the Day

"The evangelistic harvest is always urgent. The destiny of men and of nations is always being decided. Every generation is strategic. We are not responsible for the past generation, and we cannot bear full responsibility for the next one; but we do have our generation. Good morning everyone..

I sure didn't want to get up this early but the geese on the lake were making such a racket! Eventually they were quiet and then robin outside my window proclaimed morning was coming!! So here I sit with my cuppa tea and Joan's mini muffins

Hal ,hope today is a good one for you and no side effects from the "seed"

Beverly, I also put strawberry jello in plus a can of crushed pineapple.

Gloria, I am with you on the books, I figure if you get something put it back where you got it. In stores when I look at magazines I spend most of my time putting back magazines that people don't put back where they belong.

Jane, hope your feeling better this morning.

Joan, thank you for breakfast.

Enjoy your day everyone.

Good Morning Everyfriend!

Amy, I do feel a bit better this morning and I slept pretty well last night.  However, after my one "safari" in the dark, I had some of the weird dreams I've been having lately.  I couldn't find the new shoes I bought and they all left for the party without me and left my car parked in.  Fortunately, Roger (an old schoolmate) came back to see what was keeping me and helped me get Mickie back inside and then took me to the party.  He always was a nice kid.

The dr. is calling a prescription in for an antibiotic for me so I can nip this "infection".  Maybe I'll feel even better tomorrow.

I'll be off to greet my public at WM this morning, then pick up my prescription, come home, eat lunch, give the doggies a snack, let them out, maybe squeeze in a nap and then pick up TLH at school.  Only one more week of school left.  By then, the strawberries will be ripe and I can spend some lovely, quiet time in the field down on my knees thanking God for the lovely day and the ripe berries.

I wish you all a day full of whatever your heart desires.

NOTE TO JUNE!  My mother was heard to say that her kids became what they were "in spite of her, not because of her".  So I guess it's Ok for you to take pride in what Gary has become.  He did it God's way!

Good morning everyone. Looks like it is time to decorate the front of the building again. When I pulled up the shades I see the landscape truck here and they are putting up the hanging pots of flowers. From what I can see from up here the look like they are all filled with yellow marigolds. And different color petunias and some blue ones I cannot see too good from up here. There are 4 on the porch and 2 on each lamp post. Then 4 window boxes on the porch railing. The back porch will have the same flowers. Looks like they are ready for the holiday week end. Oh boy just saw the latest weather. Yesterday was hot but humidity still pretty low. BUT  by tomorrow we will have “tropical humidity” moving in, so says the weather guesser.

PATRICIA  that flower sounds beautiful.

JUNE  you sure had a busy day yesterday. Hope today you can take it easy. My big thing for today is a grocery delivery between 4 and 6.

BEVERLY  I had a square cast iron fry pan I really liked. My daughter has it now. It is too heavy for me to pick up with 2 hands now.

HAL  hope the sore shot site did not keep you awake.

JOAN  oh wow quite a variety of mini muffins you have. Which one will I take? Eeny meany miney mo? Poor man with the cheap suit. Thanks for today's goodies.

AMY  just like looking for a greeting card. We look for the right one and put them back where we got them from but so many just put them anywhere. Aggravating for sure.

JANE  glad I don't have weird dreams, if I do I never remember them.  Hope it is a quiet day for you at WM. No fun working when you do not feel good.

Good Morning Everyone!

Up early and off to bible study.  Will be nice seeing everyone again after our brief break.

I feel pretty good, if I could just get myself to going.  Slow start this morning, but got the coffee on and caught up with the early risers.

Amy I think the only rhubarb I have eaten is in pies with custard on top. But the jam would go good with some nice hot biscuits.

Well guess I had better get in the bathroom and "try" and make myself presentable.

Janie, I hope you get to feeling better.  Lousy way to end a vacation.

Talk  to you later.

larryhanna

Hi everyone.  It is a bit warmer already this morning than the last few days and we are likely to get to 89 degrees before the day is over.  We had an enjoyable picnic sort of meal last night at the Wednesday night dinner at church.  The hamburgers and hot dogs that had been grilled outside were delicious and the meal was topped off with an old fashioned ice cream sundae with all the toppings you can imagine, including marshmallow cream.  We then enjoyed a nice quiet evening with Scott here for a couple of hours.  Today I will go to coffee and then go to the Church for the Wisdom class.  The rest of the day I will be quiet and restful.

Hal, glad that procedure is over for you.  Glad you didn't have to park and then walk to the building and good thing it was down and not up steps with the escalator.  I can do the down flight OK it is the up flight that leaves me very tired.

Joan, I haven't had a poached egg for well over 50 years and have no intention of ever having one again.  I want my eggs scrambled and preferably with cheese.
I don't think you would have noticed the grits with all the other ingredients in the quiche.

June, I did a home study course on Daniel years ago and remember it being very interesting.

Amy, there is not much more pleasant to smell in a home that fresh baked bread nor to eat.

Molly, you must have done a great job of teaching the person if they had advanced to the Dept. Chairman by the time you were there as a visiting professor.

Danklan, what a helpful article.  I would never have thought of many of these uses.  I copied it and emailed it to my wife, her sister and my son.  Just wish I could remember all of the good ideas I read about.  :)

Enjoyed all the postings and have had to restrain myself from writing a book with the responses.

Mary Ann

Larry, I prefer poached eggs, although we don't have them often.  Tom fixes breakfast when we eat here.  My preference is the poached egg on toast and the yolk should be runny so it will soak into the toast.  That's not the way I get it when Tom fixes it but it is good nevertheless.

We are to get up to 85 today and it is 70 now at 9:15 am.  I turned on the a/c for the first time yesterday as it was too hot to have the slider door open.

Our family lunch was postponed yesterday so we are going to try again today.  We will be at Boulder Creek Country Club and a favorite there for me is Napa Salad.  I think the dressing is what makes the salad and I don't know what it is except something "raspberry".  I am not able to dissect food to find out the ingredients.

:peepwall:

Good Morning Everyone,  from the
beautiful rocky coast of Maine.
I have the windows open and the
fans blowing to keep the air
moving,  just in case it gets any warmer.

Regarding shower bars....
I do not understand shower bars
that are not bolted into the walls.

I have four shower bars
(one on each end and two on the long
side, one lower, one higher) ... and
they are all bolted into the wall.

It is  a matter of law here.

To me,  it doesn't make sense to have
shower bars that are not securely bolted
into the walls.    Otherwise they are
an extreme  hazard and more dangerous
then having nothing.

All is well here ...
Everyone have a great day.

Sandy
