Mary Page, you are now added to my prayer list for a good evaluation and a good trip on the roller coaster.

Mary, I've never had tuna/avocado sushi but it sounds great. I'm not a big fan of sushi, but definitely like the tuna ones. Nice you got out to dinner with Margaret.

Jane, Patricia is really a great help to you and sounds like fun to be with too. Glad she got her apples.

Marilyn, how wonderful that you had such a great time with Kyle and his girlfriend. Did K enjoy it as much? Too bad the other boys aren't as caring.

It is cool and overcast with a chance of rain here, but I did walk Bunny down to the lake at lunch. My cleaning girl is here now, so that is good. We had a beautiful day yesterday, but not today.

All 3 of the kids called over the weekend, so that was good to catch up and tell them about my trip. Melanie & Sangmin had their 35th anniversary the 4th and Brian & Traecy had their 29th Yesterday. Hard to believe they've been married so long.

Have a nice week everyone. John's birthday is Thursday. #83!

Today I made 10 jars of jam. 5each of Strawberry and then mixed  Strawberry,Blackberry I hope they set up overnight. I have enough blackberries for another batch which I will do tomorrow.I also want to pur up another 12 jars of Sauerkraut .
This will have to take place after I get my car back..

MaryPage

Thank you for the prayers, Sharon.  I always think they cannot be anything but good.  I am still happily filled with delight over your trip.  It turned out so perfectly.  Do be sure to get one of John Baxter's books about Paris.  It feels to me as though he dips his pen in an inkwell marked "Paris" and writes away.  He captures so much of the many flavors of that ancient city.

Thank you for the thoughts, Patricia.  I spent all of World War II drawing fervent pathways home across mental maps of the world for each of my uniformed uncles and for my father.  "Bring him home safe; bring him home safe," was my mantra.  I think thoughts and prayers are very powerful parts of the universe.  In any event, all of those from my kinship circle who followed the flag came home.  Each had experienced more than he wished to, but each came back.  The malaria my Uncle Buster picked up in the South Pacific was a hateful visitor to him for the rest of his life.  I think their memories were the worst things they brought home.

Foggy day full of shades of grey.  No bridge, no Kent Island, no boats in sight.  It is way too warm for October still.  We'll go up into the eighties again this week.

The most amazing thing about this heart situation is the fatigue.  It just takes over and fills up every space of your world.

Happy Day to each of you sweet, sweet people.

After a full day of rain and gloom yesterday, we have today more wind but no rain...that's to come back tomorrow!  It's only in the mid 60s, which I like, and it's time to think about switching some clothes around.  Time to dig out the heavier things, I guess.

Marilyn...wow...you're really in the jam mood.  I've never done that, though my Mom did.

MaryPage...glad you have your dates set up next week for the evaluation.

Sharon...get yourself rested up.

Darlene...hope the temps are cooling down for you.

Mary...it's wonderful Margaret is available to take you where you need to be.

I made my two grocery store trips this morning.  I'm amazed at the shortages and the higher prices.  One fellow who worked for the company he was stocking at WalMart told me a product I wanted hasn't been available for a long time, and he doesn't know why.  I guess it's all related to the truck driver shortages and plant shortages and those ships MP sees on the east coast and the same thing on the west coast.  It's going to be worse, I guess, as the holidays approach.

Stay safe and healthy,

jane

maryz

Marilyn, your canned stuff looks terrific. I always enjoy the various things that Margaret puts up.

We're still having what our weather-person is calling "Hot-tober" - temps in the 80s. That's supposed to really change next week, starting with a high of 70 on Sunday, followed by highs in the 60s. Welcome to weather in Tennessee!

Re the shortages - our cooks have been complaining about supplies they've ordered not showing up "on the truck". So we'll have substitutes for the planned menus.  Guess it hits home everywhere.

We got our flu shots yesterday. Some of the folks had mild reactions, but I didn't have even as much as a sore arm.    Now I'm ready for the Covid booster. We had the Moderna shots, so we'll have to wait until that's approved.

Hope everyBuddy's going to have a good week!

Thanks Mary I canned 4 pints of Blackberry jelly yesterday and I have to redo the Strawberry/blackberry jam with more pectin it didn't set up enough. I am also going to make Blackberry/Pineapppe jelly next week.

My cardiologists office called yesterday and st me up with a stress test and echo gram next Wednesday.

jane

Mary...I didn't have a reaction to the flu shot, and I hope you don't either.

Marilyn...Wow...you're the JAM LADY for sure.  Good news on the cardiologist appt.

Nothing exciting here.

jane

Hi Buddies..was good to read about Sharon and John wonderful trip....I miss that...when hubby was alive..we traveled a lot...the temps and humidity is going down some...the weekend is forecast to be real nice and fall like...Marlyn your jam..sounds real good...Jane I haven't got my flu shot yet..hope to next week....A big hello to all...stay safe and well......

jane

Just checking in to see what my Buddies are up to.

Darlene...glad the weather is becoming more comfortable.  Here, too.  40s this morning and it's delightful.

Stay safe and healthy,

jane

maryz

All is well here, jane. The front is supposed to come through here this evening - 80s today, and high in the 60s tomorrow. This is a nice - if weird - time of year.

Happy Weekend to all the Buddies!
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

Tomereader1

Cold front currently in progress here in Dallas. Good wind blowing, and it is down into the 60's.  Supposed to be in 40's overnight.  Best find another blanket!

MaryPage

That seems so weird, Tomereader. According to our local newspaper, we have a high of 79 and a low of 67 today.  Tomorrow we are due for a high of 80, with heavy rain and a thunder storm, and a low of 52.  Sunday, we will be sunny again, with a high of 63 and a low of 51.  Then our temps are to go up again.

My 2nd husband, David, was from Dallas.  i don't remember ever hearing that it was cooler down there than it is up here; but that does not mean, of course, that it wasn't.

jane

Roller coaster here, too.  Snow west of us in S.Dakota and further west.  We may have patchy frost tonight.  I'm glad my flowers are all dumped and the baskets and pots put away.

Also on our news and probably yours as well was the prediction that winter heating costs here will about double this winter.  That's really going to hit some families hard.

Stay safe and healthy,

Jane

MaryPage

I saw that, Jane.  Very worrisome indeed.  Oil heating is going through the roof, and gas will be expensive, albeit less so than oil. Electric will not go up as much as those two, but it will be more.  Inflation scares me to bits.  I have an all electric apartment here.  The pandemic has sure cost us all a lot of pain and hardship.

Daughter Becky just checked in with me on her arrival back in Kansas City (Missouri) from Dallas.  She & Sam went down for several days this week to visit with Sam's brother and sister.  They said the traffic in Dallas was just ghastly; much, much worse than they can remember it ever being.  It has been some years since they've gone down there.

Tomereader1

Oh, yes MaryPage.  Traffic in Dallas is ghastly+.  Bad enough with just the traffic, but they have several of the major thorofares and IH Highways torn to heck and back. Everyone has to find a shortcut to get where they're going anymore.  I was born here, lived all my life here, and each year they decide to tear something up to make it better?  Huh?  The construction usually takes 2 or more years to complete and then they start planning to add on or remove bridges/overpasses and change up entrance and exit ramps, so you don't know whether you're coming or going

jane

I remember when we'd go through Dallas-Ft. Worth on our way to S. Texas.  Multi level 4 and 6 lane highways...I was always concerned we'd make a wrong exit and be headed for the Pacific Ocean before we could get off and back again!!
  :idiot2:  :2funny:

It's a beautiful, cool morning here...44° and bright and sunny...not a cloud in the sky, but a nice breeze, too.  I dug out my heavier stuff...and it feels so good.

I keep talking about switching my closet around, but I haven't gotten to it yet.  I did do a cleanout of old stuff from my medicine cabinet and from my makeup basket.  I don't wear makeup much any more...and so I needed to discard stuff I'd gotten in those "free" sample packs you used to get...and maybe still do...when you bought a product.  I did keep some mosturizer I like for the winter months.

The birds are so noisy lately...I put out a suet cake and we'll see if they're interested in that yet.

Exciting life I lead, huh!! :2funny:  :coolsmiley:

I'm off to get some breakfast...am trying to follow med directions and take my thyroid pill a 1/2 hour before I eat.  Now it's time for English muffin with pear cinammon jam and extra cinammon added.

My school where I taught for 26 yrs has 86 cases of Covid out of 900 students! They think the cases are dropping so they're saying by Tuesday they'll drop the mask mandate.  They blame it on homecoming a couple weeks ago.  These are kids who could have been vaccinated. ::)

Stay safe and healthy,

jane

patricia19

Jane, I would expect to see more new cases within the two-week incubation period when they drop more safety measures, masks and others.

Marilyn

i changes my avatar a few days ago, the Buddies didn't even notice.  I feel invisible. LOL In fact I was invisible before I put that picture in.LOL (no picture)

All is well here, cold this morning.

Cottoncandy

Marlyin...I did notice your new picture...love it.....beautiful lady...can't believe it's onl 72 degrees here today...a nice change from heat and humidity....hope everyone has a great weekend

maryz

Marilyn - saw your new photo on FB. I guess I never look at the photos here. Shame on me!
 You're looking great!

jane, my youngest is taking a friend to a funeral in So Alabama this weekend, and is concerned. Jean is diabetic and asthmatic, has been vaccinated with J&J. And she's doing into a hotbed of non-vaccinated people. She's not planning to go to the funeral service, just help her friend with the driving and dog-sitting, but still...

Traffic in or near a city of any size is a nightmare, IMO. Frankly, I'm glad I'm not driving anymore.

The storm last night was a big one. No damage in this immediate area, and I have no idea how much rain we got, but it started about 6 p.m., and rained hard off and on all night long. It's lovely today, though - sunny, cool, and breezy.

Hope your team wins!
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

jane

Patricia...You are so right, unfortunately.

Darlene...hurrah for nicer temps for you.  It's 56 here now, and I love it.  I guess it's a good thing I'm a "northerner" ... these temps work better with this old body.

Marilyn...sorry...as Darlene said, I saw the new pic and it's lovely...and then it slipped from my mind.

Mary...I'm glad Jean is careful...with diabetes and esp. asthma, she sure doesn't need additional lung problems. My neighbors drove to St. Louis yesterday...well, Altona, IL, to get on the ship back up the Mississippi...the same one you and John took.  It was so fun to meet you both in Dbq that day you docked there.

I'm watching Auburn and Arkansas game and thinking of our Sue.  I think I'll email Tim and see if I can find out how she's doing.

Take care and stay safe!

jane

MaryPage

Tomereader, one of the things Becky complained of was: "Mom, there was no green.  There were no green spaces!  It was all a concrete jungle."

David grew up in a beautiful Dallas, and he was devoted to it.  He stayed as long as he could!  He grew up on Bryn Mawr Avenue in Highland Park and went to St. Mark's and then SMU.  He got a job with a newspaper, and they sent him to Amarillo, and then to D.C., where I met him.  Dallas still had a lot of green the last time we were all gathered there in 1997.  Now all the older generation are dead and gone, as are most of our generation.  I did love Dallas back in the day.  I expect I would not admire it now.

Marilyn, I'm sorry: I DID notice your change in picture; I just had other things on my so-called mind, and failed to comment.  Believe me truly when I say that I never miss a word anyone has to say, nor do I not notice photos.  It is true I am one of this world's most unobservant people; but I do pay attention in here.  I told myself you are a good-looking woman!  I should, of course, have told you!

Patricia, there was an article in our paper this morning about the oil checks and the 600 thousand plus who would be getting them this year and what the size would be.  Why did I think they quit that a few years ago?  Was it being contemplated or something?

We have been having a beautiful day, but they are calling for a heavy storm with lots of rain later.  Is that your storm, Mary?  If so, we really don't want or need it./color]

MaryPage

Jane, as I grow older, I too have noticed the cooler air is easier for these old, beat-up lungs to breathe, as well and all.

Oh, DO please ask about Sue!  I miss her very much.

patricia19

MaryPage, it's politics with the governor facing a recall, trying to take that out of a reserve fund and send it out to boost his ratings. People don't realize that once that reserve fund is empty, there is no more oil money to refill!

MaryPage, Dallas still has a lot of green, but in the neighborhoods, not where the roadways, highways, expressways come together.  I would suppose a lot of the green got bull dozed in making these flyovers, etc.  My daughter who only lives 55 miles from here, is always oohing and ahhing over all the trees and green spaces here, as her town, although growing a lot, was fairly small to begin with, then growth began to happen as folks moved East of Dallas, and her city tried to catch up to the growth, with improving streets (which are still awful--smooth now, but redesigned with extra lanes for turning, and that creates logjams sometimes) and if ever there were trees, and grassy medians, they are no more!
A lot of the beautiful homes over near Highland Park (the smaller ones) have been torn down to build McMansions.  Even our area here, out near White Rock Lake, the homes are being torn down to build something that doesn't fit with the existing neighborhood. Gentrifying, be dammed.  There is no personality to neighborhoods anymore.

maryz

jane, that was a good trip. And, I think, the last one we took before our trip to the Canadian Rockies where John died.  I still recommend the American Cruise Line to everybody.

MaryPage, I guess you're getting "my" storm - it's on the leading edge of a cold front blowing through.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

Shirley

Mary Page, I've been watching & reading about your heart condition. Been there & done that. Like Mary, mine was open down the middle. Had 3 by-passes so they sliced the leg from knee to ankle to get that vein. I've talked to 2 other people that had by-passes & their doctors did a "nip" at the top & bottom & slipped it out. I got the pig valve, recommended by several doctors, but they are working on a new version (my kids keep track) that appears to have no time limits. I was told mine would last "up to 15 years" but last year the doc that put in a couple stents wanted to replace my valve with the one through the artery & I told him NO, it was only 7 years & I have not found what to expect the length of the newer one but I'm going to try to hold off for the one being tested now.

My son had to have his aortic valve replaced a couple years ago because his GP let an infection go on for a couple years & it settled on that valve. So risky they had to do antibiotics so strong for a week before surgery, was direct into the heart. Anyway, I would rather be the guinea pig for the one with no time limit for my son's sake.

Because I have a problem with all kinds of meds, I convinced my cardiologist to allow NO pain meds if I made it through the surgery (knowing they had to use stuff to put me out). He did the heart cath without any pain meds & reminds everyone in ear shot that I did it. When he started the cath he said, "Shirley, I'm just going to give you a little something to take the edge off"... and I insisted, "YOU PROMISED".... so it was much harder on him than me.

After coming out of the operation I had nothing but Bayer aspirin (250 mg), for ME it is easier to keep my head clear & I am tougher without any chemical holding me back. I don't recommend this to anyone, but works best for me. Besides, Bayer works as my blood thinner & still only thing I take (for blood thinner or anything).

When A-fib hit hard about the 3rd day after surgery I said okay to a med injected. I was doing great with the walking up to then but every day after I had more trouble walking the hall... so they kept me 8 days. I went home on a Sat with a 'script for that A-fib & that was only med I was taking. By Monday night I was still not able to change that dressing & Cas knew I was only half me so suggested we cut the pill in half. Sure nuff, next morning I got up, ripped than bandage off & was almost normal. That lasted 3 days & the body went into overload so we cut the half in half, 3 days later I quit taking them & no problem since with A-fib.

Because my body reacts different from most, I don't offer advice to even my own kids. Nothing but, you need to know your own body & what you can tolerate. Ask questions, any that pop into your mind. Lots of us out here that have had heart surgery & survived, we'll all be praying for you. The open heart surgery wasn't nearly as bad as it sounds, not fun, but I don't think I'm as afraid of it a second time as I was of cataract surgery (and that turned out to have problems). Think tough. I never did ask Mary if she was short winded before & if her surgery helped. I was and still am very short winded, not sure if it is habit or lack of exercise or what.

Sadly, I go for my last check up with my buddy the cardiologist on Wed. the 27th. I plan to ask him if he will come visit me "as a friend" when I do go for that next surgery. I will feel more at ease if he can raise his eyebrows at the new kid taking over. I've been expecting him to retire for several years but dreaded the day. He was Cas' doctor before taking me on 30+ years ago. My son had a younger cardiologest and surgeon in the same group so hope to pick them for my new doctors, everyone in the family was impressed with them. And now I will shut up, will not be offended if y'all are rolling your eyes at this long post (I mean well). ;)

maryz

Good to hear from you Shirley. I was diagnosed with "mild to moderate COPD" by a pneumonologist in early 2017. I saw her because of my shortness of breath. I first saw a cardiologist in August 2019 because of increased ankle swelling that didn't go down overnight. Turns out I have persistent a-fib - don't really know how that feels, because obviously it's "normal" for me. I saw the cardiologist last week. My EKG then was unchanged from previous ones, but he wants me to see the pacemaker folks and have the heart rate slowed a bit. That's set up for this Thursday. I don't know what that's supposed to do, but I see the doc again two weeks after that. Like you said, the recovery from the heart surgery wasn't as bad as I had imagined.

Patch, patch, patch!
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

jane

Mary...Ray and I sure enjoyed seeing you and John again that day...and I remember the good time meeting more of your Texas family at the restaurant in Weslaco.  AND, it really is "patch, patch, patch" at this point in our lives.

Shirley...always good to see you popping in.  Come by more often.

I did my Sunday "work"...that means I did very little.  I did change the location of two chairs in my "family" room..."sun room"...7 windows in here that face mostly south...and where I spend most of my time.

Stay safe and healthy, Buddies,

jane

MaryPage

Shirley and Mary, I am deeply interested in every word you write of your experiences.

For all of my lifetime, I have been one who gags over details of things medical.  I don't like medical movies or TV shows, and I die a million deaths over seeing all of those needles going into arms on all of the news shows since the Pandemic began.  I think folk are either medical, or they are not.  My paternal grandfather was a surgeon.  An uncle was a pediatrician.  Both my mother and my step mother were nurses. and now one daughter and two granddaughters are nurses.  I keep telling the latter that I want NO description of what is going on: just quickie advice as to what I should do. Honestly, I appreciate every speck of your history in the areas currently hitting me.

I started out with just Arrhythmia, and then went to A Fib.  I took it for granted that would be the end of heart surprises, but then the Congestive Heart Failure came on like Gang Busters.  That is what was listed as the cause on Bob's death certificate.  Bummer.

Well, mebbe I'll be lucky, and mebbe I won't.  I really enjoy my family, and want to bring them all together again for my 100th birthday party.  I will be blistering mad if that doesn't happen.  Death does not frighten me; my upset is entirely a selfish response filling my brain with all the things I still want to do.
