Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

AMEN! MaryPage.  I'm hoping to do my small part by trying to get rid of "chuckles" Grassley... now 87 and, [although he says he favors term limits...he doesn't favor them for himself...sound familiar??] if he wins reelection can be there until he's 96.  OMG!

Another cold one here...now 10 degrees...and my Patricia and husband are home from Hawaii.  Quite a temp change for them...from island temps to northern WI.

I wanted to see more of some Olympics, but all I can find is curling...an interesting sport, but not one of my top 10 favorites. :coolsmiley:

So...back to my kindle reading until SuperBowl time.  All of this pre-game hype wears me out as does their half-time entertainment.   :tickedoff:

Iowa still all red as HIGH transmission of covid...though our Governor says it's over.  Uh huh...right.

Stay safe and healthy and don't get medical advice from the politicians!!

Hi Gals, Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Just been busy. Lots of posts to read.

Darlene, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. It must have been sudden if you saw her at church last week. At least she didn't suffer.

Mary, glad that Margaret is free of the quarantine now. What a relief for her.  Nice that you were able to get out and get a good haircut and manicure. The last haircut I got was really botched. My hair is so strange since it grew back in and my gal is not working well with it. I'm going to let it grow out a lot more before I get it shaped again. I also got a mani not long ago.

Jane, I agree with you fully on your governor and many others. As to term limits that should have been enacted decades ago. Do you remember Strom Thurmond from SC? He was close to 100 when he died in office as a Senator. He was a joke, sleeping through most sessions.

Mary Page, Agree with all you said.  My mother wanted to go to college, but her dad said girls didn't need to. She always felt inferior because she hadn't as my dad and both her kids had multiple degrees. She was just as smart as the rest of us and held down a very responsible, though low-paying, job for over 20 years. When I went to apply for a dept. store credit card in 61, I had to have my husband's signature on the application even though I was working as a teacher. Later, when we were in AK while John was in the Army, I was teaching at a local school when I got pregnant with our oldest. I was promptly told I had to quit at the end of that semester as it wasn't appropriate to have a pregnant teacher. What a crock.

Alpine, unless you have an Advantage supplement, vision and hearing are usually not covered.  I have Cigna supplement G which is one of the best, but it doesn't pay for those. I can, however, go to any dr. and have any procedure without pre-authorization. Just remember that all you vision, hearing and dental expenses not paid by ins. can be listed as a medical deduction on your taxes--if you are eligible for deductions.

Hi Marilyn and Patricia. Glad all is well with you.

John had a car accident this past week and messed up the whole right side of the car. Can't open the passenger door, so he is truly my chauffeur now and I'm Miss Daisy.  Fortunately, he wasn't injured nor was the other driver and the car is drivable. Unfortunately, the body shop won't get to us till April.

I think I told you I am now the editor of the newsletter here. Lots of snafus with it, but it's coming.

We're going over to the Valentine luncheon in a little while, so I need to get moving and get dressed.

Happy Valentines Day to all.

Happy Valentines Day

patricia19

Good morning and happy Valentine's Day! It's minus 32 this morning, but we're told we're on the cusp of an extensive warm-up. At this rate, I'll believe it when I see it. Nothing this winter has been usual but judging by the past three years, that's our new normal.

alpiner1

SharonE  We have what I think is an HMO on our insurance . Hubby also has some sort of a medical plan in his retirement .

alpiner1

We a had a little mishap with our car , a light was left on above the rear view mirror & the battery went dead .  Hubby charged it yesterday & is going to town to try it out .   He is taking my cell phone just in case . If it runs good we are going to drive to the casino to celebrate Valentines Day .  If it conks out we will take hubby's truck & call AAA tomorrow .

jane

Alpiner...I hope you and hubby won big at the casino yesterday!

It's warming up into the 30s today, so that's extra nice.

Nothing else exciting here.   8)

alpiner1

Jane unfortunately we didn't win much if any .  The slot machines get tighter every time we go there .  The only good thing was a prime rib lunch for #7.77 & our car got 32 miles per gallon  .

maryz

alpiner, glad you had a good day.

jane, glad your temps are a bit warmer (if not your governor, etc.).  We're having a couple of beautiful sunny days with temps in the 60s. Of course, there's another cold front due to come through on Thursday - just the usual.

Sharon, sorry your haircut went awry. Fortunately, hair does grow out - eventually.  ;)

We had a lovely day yesterday. Our financial counselor gives a luncheon every Valentine's Day for her widow clients. Margaret and I went to Chattanooga for the luncheon - a typical tea-room luncheon. We sat with two of my friends from the swim class I attended, so it was a sort-of reunion as well. Great fun!

Hi to Marilyn, Patricia, Darlene, and any others looking in.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

MaryPage

Some years back I gave a book titled "COLOR" and written by Victoria Finlay to my oldest daughter, who is an artist.  I read it first, and was intrigued with the chapter on the color yellow including intriguing details about a plant named Silphium that became extinct because ancient women used it all up.  I swore to myself that I would follow up later to obtain more information, but only now am I fulfilling that promise to myself.

Silphium, according to the Ancients, performed many tasks, but the one claim that fascinated ME was that women used it to bring on abortions.

I sort of connected it with a possibility that it did, indeed, have this effect, and of course would have been heavily used.  But now, at last, I am researching and finding it did not grow everywhere and that it could not be planted.  I had wondered why we do not have acres and acres of it!

I also read an intriguing bit about the shape of its tiny flower being that of a heart, and thus it has been related to Valentines.  Now my question is, when & why did our hearts become related to things romantic?

Well, I have lots of reading to do, so thought I would just throw this latest point of fascination to you to do your own thing with.  Amazing the road we humans have taken from speechless animals to what we are today!

maryz

Keep up the good work, MaryPage!!

jane

Alpiner...so, the day wasn't a total loss with the nice lunch.

Mary...how nice for your luncheon, too.

MaryPage...fascinating info on the plant/color.

Snow slowly melting today with temps in the 40s, to be go down again.

Exactly right, Patricia!

Hard to get up this morning.

I could just as easily put that in for today, Jane. We've got the same blowing snow and wind as elsewhere. Yesterday's low was minus 28, and today's was plus 14.

MaryPage

Chip informs me it really blew up a storm here in the wee hours.  I slept through it, as I always do.  No snow, though.  It is cold, but the yard crew are replacing the mulch on all of the gardens and around the trees.  A smelly sign of Spring.

So sad about that Russian teenager who was to be such a wonder to our eyes.  I wish she had been; we can all do with a happy ending.  And a child is a child is a child; albeit you cannot, in any language, tell a fifteen-year-old they are still a child.

I very much doubt we will ever know what really happened there.  Nor do we need to, but I wish her well.

Good morning, I start PT today.  Not much else is new. AAA overcharged me by  Get This $1000.00 All for taxes.on the price of m car tat I bought in Oregon even though it had been brought to Oregon from California in the first place. They are going to refund me the $$ It will come from the DMV or the Ca tax office. The AAA gentleman who waited on me had never hd to deal wilth an out of state car registration. that had be  purchased by the previous owner in ca. Now I have more paperwork for someone to fill out for me.

I am also applying to the VA to get beneHe may not get them since he was in the Reserves and didn't serve outside the USA. He could sure use some medical benefits for Keith. More paperwork, since I can't find his DD214.

jane

MaryPage...sure agree about that 15 yr old.  I strongly think there is psychological, if not physical abuse, in much of this "elite" training, be it swimming, skating, gymnastics, etc.

Marilyn...if K was in the Reserves and never called to active duty, he probably has no DD214.  That was what the case was for Ray, who was never qualified for medical help.  There may be a county veterans committee who can help you, answer your questions.

Cold wind here today.

Jane

Morning from roller- coaster Iowa.  Weatherguessers are calling it temperature whiplash.  5 degrees this morning and to be 50 tomorrow before another plunge.

It was plain nasty last night...40+ winds and a rain/snow pellets.  We stayed in town for last night's Friday out and went to Chinese restaurant.  They were really busy, esp with take outs.

Nothing planned this weekend...will probably watch some more "Sweet Magnolias" on Netflix.

Good morning everyone! We're in the midst of a cold spell between two warmer ones but should be leaving the cold behind the closer we are to March. Of course, if March stays true to its origins, that means a snow dump as humidity, and warmer air settles.

CC, I envy your fireplace. That sounds so warm and cozy!

I did it, and it only took me five years! I finally hit the goal weight a doctor gave me in 2017....just a tiny bit late.  :-[  This antiinflammatory diet I've been on since last fall works. Not only have I not suffered an attack or gone in for an expensive doctor's visit, but I lost weight and gained better hair, skin, and nails.

I'm not counting calories but ingredients. I eat simply as our parents and grandparents did. I have to read labels and watch for added chemicals: no fast food, convenience, or processed.

The downside is not going out to dinner or with friends or giving up all those goodies I used to grab daily. I'm allergic to chemicals used in food to prolong shelf storage

jane

Good afternoon!
Darlene...you sound cosy!

Patricia...congrats on the weight goal!

It's very spring like here...snow is melting, and I went out for a short walk.  Then off to fill the car's gas tank and on to Walmart for a few things.

Jane

patricia19

Thanks, Jane, I wish it hadn't taken me five years...plus I don't get too many dinner invitations as one of my friends said, "Who wants to be the one who killed someone with their cooking?"   :o

Hi Gals. It's been a busy week for me. Valentines Day luncheon was lovely--good food, lovely decorations, etc. Special room too. Bridge was really good Tues. I even won. I also had to act as recording secretary for the resident council as their usual one was out. That took most of an afternoon + typing up time.

Working on the Newsletter. Had a blowout with my neighbor and photographer on the paper which has caused all kinds of ripples. She thought she should make the decisions that I, as editor, have to make. The director talked to her after I complained to her and told her what was going on, so not she is cooperating--sort of, and coolly. I hate that because we were very friendly before.

Melanie and Sangmin were here this weekend. It was so good to see them. We met them for brunch at 8:30 this AM (yikes). Have you ever eaten at a Le Peep brunch restaurant? They are really good. After breakfast, they got on the road to head home.

Alpine, I don't like HMO's because they limit your choices. Sounds like you had a nice Valentines.

Mary, how nice that you got to have lunch with your buddies and Margaret at the investment luncheon.

It sounds like we all are having rollercoaster weather. Supposed to be 60's here for the next few days. But who knows after that. There are some daffodils out. I just couldn't live in the snowy cold north anymore. Hi to everyone. I need to get busy on the newsletter. Sharon

Hello Buddies. Jane  I got forms from the VA To fill out and send off. I was assurred that he does have a DD214. IDK but will find out whenever they contact me.

I've been busy lately  just doing one thing after another and not having much time in between. It might be computer work going to AAA. lunch, the VA etc.

I went to PT Friday and was in formed that  should get a walking stick. She seemed to feel that  my falls have had something to do with  the way my eyes are focusing with the Macular Degeneration.

AAA told me they would give me a year to get my CA drivers license. I just hope I an pass the test or rather see it on the computer screen there at the DMM office.

2-22-22......Have a great day ....

patricia19

CC, you beat me to it! I was going to say Welcome to Two Day, a very rare day indeed, 2/22/2022!

MaryPage

Isn't it Fun!

I do not believe in numerology, but I DID take note of today's date before shutting down last night.

And I cannot but admit feeling that great grandson Mateo is very special because he was born on 12/12/12,

Well, I have 28 great grandchildren, so I think there are 28 people destined to be the greatest of the great.

Still, Mateo and I have bonded deeply, and I adore him!/color]

patricia19

I don't believe in signs or portents either but it's fun to note them.
