Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

The reason we are side-eyed is that we went, in the blink of an eye, from a sane, sensible, reliable country, in their view, to one more akin to the fantasized wild west with the gunslingers in charge.

The Qanon conspiracies and many American politicians are nurturing that view and how they see us as unreliable.

MaryPage

Thank you, Patricia.

jane

Afternoon greetings.

A bad night here pain-wise, so this will be short.

Stay safe and healthy,

jane

MaryPage

Aw, Jane.  I am sorry.  You deserve all kinds and sorts of happy, surprisy things.

maryz

I got my haircut and mani/pedi yesterday. I think I've told you that the salon is owned by a mother and daughter from Ukraine.  They've been in the US for about 15 years, but still have family in Ukraine (Mariupol). They have not heard directly from any of their family for over a week, but understand they cannot get groceries, gasoline, power, etc. What a tragic situation!

The thing here is, I can think of nothing else these days.  No matter what I am doing, or even thinking about, the doom & gloom of what is occurring in this world makes  a background of a thing I simply cannot banish from my inner sight and thoughts.

When we were little things, we felt supremely confident the grown ups could and would solve any problem.  On the radio, Adolf Hitler's screaming rants could be heard on a daily basis, but Franklin Delano Roosevelt's soothing tones, drenched with absolute certainty, made the far-off nightmare disappear.  We elected that fatherly figure to office FOUR TIMES!  Did you know that?  FOUR times!  And I can remember the very moment I was told he was dead.  I didn't even KNOW who his current Vice President was!  The radio told us.  Harry Truman!  Who's He?!!?

Well, I don't trust in the grown ups anymore.  Albeit, there is a former comedian wearing the demeanor of a really noble human being these days. I hope there will BE History books in our future, and that those books will record how this man pulled together the spirit of an entire nation, just as FDR did once upon a time for us.

jane

MaryPage...I, too, cannot think of anything else but those little children with their mothers leaving for an unknown place and leaving Daddy and Uncles behing.  I went by the gas station I use, and saw $3.99...and thought what a small price to pay for hopefully help for those people.

Mary...the mother and daughter must be worried sick.

I'm doing a lot better today and got a good night's rest.

It's a bitterly cold day here...the wind out of the north is awful.

Stay healthy and safe,

jane

Morning, Buddies, from a chilly Iowa....17 degrees right now, but "they" promise us 50s by next week.

Nothing new and certainly nothing exciting here.  While I do love winter, I am getting tired of the cold.  Time to move to a new season. 8)

Good morning Jane and everyone!

We're one up on you, Jane, with 18 degrees so far. Yesterday and today, the skies have stayed white, and it's snowing, sleeting, whatever, but it's sticking.

There is nothing new here, but general housework and computer maintenance, re-aligning some folders and deleting others.

My life is very exciting these days...

maryz

Weird weather here, too. We were in the 60s today, supposed to be in the 60s tomorrow. But then by nighttime, the temps are supposed to fall to lows in the teens, and we're predicted to have 2-3"of snow on the ground by midmorning, with highs around 30! Then, guess what! High on Monday in the upper 60s! Sheesh! Weather whiplash!

SharonE

Hi Gals. Weather is weird here too. No snOW, but record-breaking temps of 80 degrees a couple days past week, below freezing tonight. My joints don't like it at all. Jane, your massage sounds wonderful.

I've been busy with newletter and our taxes and bunny. Am cooking her food now. She won't eat canned or kibble. I'm afraid she's on the downhill slide.

I'm going to Tallahassee 4/4-6 to visit my sil and nieces & nephew. Hate to be gone with Bunny sick, but don't think the end is imminent and John will take good care of her. John has two bridge tournaments in April, one here in NO Charlotte, the other in Gatlinburg. So had to work around them.

Talked to our grandson, Thomas, on his birthday this week and to great grandson, Harrison on his last Sat. Next week is our granddaughter's! So many family birthdays this month and last.

I need to get my hair cut and styled by someone other than the girl here. I just can't get it to do anything normal since it's grown back.

I won't comment on individual posts although I read them all. Stay in and stay warm through these strange weather patterns. Jane, I do hope you get to feeling better soon.  Sharon

maryz

Sharon, glad you're getting some family time.

The sun is shining brightly on a couple of inches of new snow outside my window. Crazy!

YUP...same roller coaster here.
4 degrees this morning and to be in 50s tomorrow with a warmer week ahead.
 OK!!!

Last night was the last Friday "go out" for the 4 of us...Gary and Kathy are off in their new motor home for their daughter's in TX...then on to New Mexico.
I hope the RV...brand new in Nov works fine.  It's already been back for 3 recalls/fixes....battery, generator, and slide not working correctly.

Nothing new here.  Taxes are ready to go to Tax Lady and I've got no desire to do anything...muscles still giving me fits.

Stay safe and healthy,

jane

Cottoncandy

Good morning...29 degrees this early AM..warming up to 50 later...so need to get out and walk....at least the wind is not blowing...have a crock pot of stew cooking and a pan of cornbread....not read all comments...wishing everyone a safe...awesome weekend....have to remember to change time tonight......

MaryPage

Oh, thank you for that!  Despite warnings to the left, right, and center, I would have forgotten.  May yet. I seem able to forget any & everything these days, and instantly.  Only thing I'm quick at any longer.  Son cannot believe me when I look at him blank-eyed:  "MOM!  I just told you that an hour ago!"

Well, sorry, but the train went out of the station without that information!

With everyone giving weather reports, I'll give you mine:  on the bayside, it is raining pure water, albeit coming down on a slant.  The fog curtains the skies and hides the shorelines to the East and the Bay Bridges to the North from my eyes.  While on the front side of this building, it is snewing.  Snew is my word for what is obviously and absolutely white snow coming down, also on a slant.  A rather fast and furious looking slant.  But it hits pavement, lawns and vehicles as pure water.  Somehow, it snews when the temps are warming up hugely between heaven & earth.  Actually, it's a rather fascinating sight to behold.

Now, will tell myself twenty-seven times and leave some notes around:  Daylight Savings is O-VER tonight!  Woo hoo!

patricia19

Good morning from an Interior with bright, blue skies, which means it's cold with no clouds to hold in the heat. Today and the next four days will be the same, with the evening lows the same as the daily highs except in minuses. For example, today will be plus eighteen with tonight, minus eighteen. Last week we were in the thirties, then back into the freezer.

Jane, I hope you soon start to feel better. My bones have been aching, too, with this crazy weather!

MaryPage, I absolutely love your descriptions of your insight and view of our world. You're able to write what we all feel and put it so succinctly.

MaryPage

Patricia, you are my biggest fan, and I love you for it;  but honestly, I just write down what my eyes see.  The line of communication is eyes to fingers (on keyboard), and there is no special talent in that.

Still, I love you for cheering me on.  You are able to make me see what you are looking at, too.  And you do a good job of explaining the workings of your big & strange ole' state.  I think you probably have to have been born there, as you were, in order to really get a sense of it all.

jane

Sunday evening sunset coming soon to a much more pleasant day...low 50s and I got out for a walk.  It's to be like this for the week, so I hope to get my outdoor walking in.

Lots of college basketball on TV this week and next as "March Madness" is upon us.

I think maybe spring is trying to sneak into Iowa.

Off for a walk

Good morning from an Interior at minus 23 with a projected high of plus ten and the not unexpected news that the cold wave will continue through tomorrow and Wednesday. No fundamental changes are expected through at least the 23rd.

Jane, enjoy that walk and spring weather!

We're having February weather in March. And those skies are cloudless, blue, and cold! The good news about the arctic and the cold is that no real creepy crawlies are able to burrow in and survive our winters, no roaches, chiggers, ticks, fleas, or other nasties.

Our reward is that brief beautiful summer with 24/7 daylight.

I was productive yesterday. I got the new vacuum and rug cleaner unboxed and assembled plus general upkeep.     ::)

I spent most of my time housecleaning my computer files and rearranging and decluttering my computer.  Today, I may even go so far as to turn the new vacuum on.  8)

Hello. Yes, I am still alive and as well as can be expected. I just ordered a tablet from Amazon. Maybe I will be able to read better on a tablet than on this pc. It is so frustrating to see and use a Magnifying glass along with extra strong glasses. It gets blurred or I just can't see the lighter fonts. Yellow highlighter is something else I can't see. I can't thread a needle or even a needle threader. So I just give up and do something else. Rant over.

MaryPage

I can commiserate with you, Marilyn.  I have something called Pellucid Marginal Degeneration, and am going slowly but relentlessly blind in my right eye.  So I sent to Amazon for a set of three 300% magnification magnifying glasses, the kind you hold in your hand to read things, not actual glasses that you wear.  My eye doctor has not changed the prescription for my eyeglasses for several years now, even though I told him I had found it necessary to use these magnifying glasses to read.  The problem is, my hands are really the worst part of me that suffers from arthritis.  They are disfigured badly, with every joint swollen, even though mine is just osteoarthritis.  So they hurt like the devil while I am holding one of my magnifying glasses to read the newspaper, and after a bit, they go into spasms, which are distinctly & unpleasantly painful, and I have to quit reading until these go away.

Oh, the indignities we have to endure as we age.  I will complain no more, but I want you to know you have a sympathizer in me.

Good Afternoon, Babes!

Marilyn...at least you can adjust the font size on a tablet.

MaryPage...My hands, like yours, ache a lot and have little strength.

Another spring like day here in the upper midwest.  I will get out and walk this afternoon.  In the mid 40s now...and 70s maybe...tomorrow.

I did go out and get a car wash card---10 $10. washes for $60.00  I like to keep one in each car and I also got the  car washed.

Nothing else new here.

Good morning Buddies! Minus twenty this morning with a promised high of only plus eight. To add to that, we're expecting snow early Wednesday morning! The good side is that it has to considerably warm up to gain the humidity to snow and the downside, well, snow.

Sandy and everyone else caught up by the US time change,

From USA Today, "WASHINGTON – You soon may be able to skip the semiannual switching of your clocks for daylight saving time.

The Senate Tuesday unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would permanently extend daylight saving time (DST) from eight months of the year to the full 12 months. The bill was first introduced in January 2021 and reintroduced by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, and seven other bipartisan members of Congress last March.

Rubio on Tuesday targeted the "ritual of changing the clock back and forth and the disruption that comes with it."

"And one has to ask themselves after a while, 'Why do we keep doing it? Why are we doing this?'" he said.

The bill would make daylight saving time permanent across the U.S. in 2023. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Florida, who introduced the House bill last year, told USA TODAY Tuesday he would send a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, asking for immediate consideration of the bill.

"There are enormous health and economic benefits to making daylight saving time permanent," Buchanan said. "Florida and 17 other states have already moved to adopt (DST) year-round but cannot do so without congressional approval. It's time to end the antiquated practice of changing our clocks twice a year.

The move to end the time change follows public opinion. A poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research conducted in October 2021 found only 25% of Americans said they preferred to switch back and forth between standard and daylight saving time.

However, 43% of survey respondents said they wanted to see standard time (the hours observed roughly for most of November into March) the time for the entire year. Meanwhile, 32% said they would prefer daylight saving time, which most of the U.S. switched to on Sunday at 2 a.m. local time, to be used all year.

Rubio said DST began in 1918 "as a practice that was supposed to save energy, and since then we've adjusted it." Initially running for six months, DST now lasts eight months, "clearly showing you where people's preference (is)," he said.

"I think the majority of the American people's preference is just to stop the back and forth changing," Rubio said. "But beyond that, I think their preference is – certainly at least based on today's vote, and what we've heard – is to make daylight saving time permanent."

"I'm hoping that after today, this will go over to the House of Representatives, and they'll act quickly on it," Rubio said. "I know this is not the most important issue confronting America, but it's one of those issues where there's a lot of agreement. I think a lot of people wonder why it took so long to get here."

Rubio brought the bill up under unanimous consent. No one objected, and it was adopted. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Arizona, who was serving as acting Senate president during the process, whispered an emphatic 'Yes!" when no one objected.

Arizona does not recognize DST (except for Navajo reservations). There's also no time change observed in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the GOP Senate whip, when asked about the DST bill's passage, said he didn't know it passed, and joked he must have missed it by an hour, but said, "I'm fine with that. People in South Dakota complain about that all the time"

Wow...suppose to get to near 70 today. Then it'll fall down to 40s and rain.  Sooo, spring is peeking in!

Good morning, snow seems to have stopped last weekend, and the cold seems to be slowly lifting. We're in the high twenties for afternoon highs and overnight lows in minus threes, fours, and fives. They're forecasting lows in the pluses starting on the twenty-third, and we won't see plus fifty until the third week in April. A fitting end to a most unusual year! We had no snow and a sunny spring for Easter only three years ago!

Marilyn, I used to have my nails done all the time but fell out of the habit after retiring. It got to be an expensive habit but was all part of the work persona I adopted at the time. I donated all those items, clothing, and scarves back in 2013, realizing I'd never wear them again. Today, I'm never out of leggings or sweats unless I'm going shopping, and then it's jeans. I save my corduroys for special events!   ::)

I seem to have settled into a pleasant complacency and am not sure if that's a good thing or not since Covid.
