Mary Page and Callie - It's disappointing to see a new movie or TV series that's been adapted from a favorite book.  Today's screenwriters feel they must update the story and change some of the characters, in order to appeal to younger viewers.  What we enjoyed reading when we were younger, would likely be too bland for our grandchildren or great-grands?

I've been wanting to tell those who have asked about Jean, (FlaJean), that I'm still hearing from her.  It's getting more difficult for her to write, but she does manage a few words just about every day.  She has a Hospice nurse who comes, so she's comfortable and not in as much pain.

MaryPage

Thank you, Marilyne, for the report re Jean.  I think about her constantly, and have been hoping for an update.

My husband died in January of 2006 under Hospice here at home.  I had not known they would come bearing morphine, but they did, and it made him happy as can be.  He constantly had a smile on his face, and was somewhere in Happyland with his eyes shut.  All of the children and granddaughters were here, so it was rather crowded.  If a new arrival went to his bedside and called out to him, he would open those eyes and say "Hello Babe", thinking he was responding to me.  (I was the only one he called Babe.)  A few words later, he would go back into his La La Land.  I had had no idea the morphine would be part of the package or that it would literally part us much sooner than I had hoped.  Bob went into Hospice on a Friday, due to his oncologists suggestion, and he died the following Thursday.  I cannot praise Hospice & the nurses that came every day highly enough.  Their dedication and their services were everything you could possibly wish for.  As for Bob's not being able to carry on a real conversation with me after Hospice took charge, I admit to being more than a little bit surprised & disappointed, but I got over it and became suffused in gratitude because he died a very happy death as these things go.  We had plenty of gratifying conversations prior to that particular Friday arriving, and I remember those.

Beverly

Marilyne - Thanks for keeping us up-dated on Jean. I feel badly. I hadn't realized she had been sick till recently. Tell her I am thinking of her and sending love and prayers.

MaryPage - I agree that Hospice is a wonderful program. Chape had been in ICU for two weeks when we realized there was no chance of recovery. We arranged for Hospice one morning and that night, while still at the hospital, he passed away. ICU had what they called Comfort Care. He was in pain and due to something called ICU pychosis, he was having hallucinations and became fearful. They stopped all treatments and gave him pain meds. If we hadn't chosen Hospice we would have had to leave his ICU room at 7:00 p.m. They told us we could stay as long as we wanted, even through the night. At 8:30 he peacefully left us. I will be ever thankful that I was there along with our children. I can imagine how you must have felt with Bob. Funny that he called you "Babe". Earlier in the day the last legible words I heard him say were "Love you Babe"

Even after 9 months, writing this is painful.

On to happier thoughts. Saturday I attended the birthday party for our twin great-grands and Keani via my Facebook Portal. It was held outdoors at Michael's house in Vermont. I was able to enjoy the party and all the pandemonium plus one-on-one visits with everyone there. That portal is a great little invention.

Today I had a Face-Time conversation with my brother. There's a lot about technology and social media that I dislike, but some of it is wonderful.

We've had a sunny and very hot (96) day.

Hope you are all having a good week.

MarsGal

I am sorry to hear that Jean is so ill. Thanks for the update, Marilyne. I was just thinking of her the other day. My thoughts are with her.

And here I thought I could destress from the kitchen project now. Nope, another problem cropped up. My long-standing nemesis, water leaks. Behind the toilet in the basement water is leaking in at the base of the basement wall. Also behind the toilet, there is the sewer outlet pipe that goes down under the cement floor. On the outside of the house is a clogged downspout. While I hope getting the clogged downspout cleaned out will take care of the problem, I suspect it has to do with the sewer pipe. I need to call my sewer/drain guy to come inspect it. Also, just discovered last evening, a new leak in my rubber roof out on the back porch. The only thing that is not directly water related is that the guys managed to make it impossible for me to open my basement screen door because the new piping for the kitchen sink obstructs the top corner. The screen door is on the inside (not the normal outside position) and opens inward. It was going to get removed next spring anyway when I planned on getting the door and casement windows done. Not a loss but it is an annoyance just now.

In other wonderful water related news, I watched a new Geology Hub episode on YouTube last night. This one is about the most recent Hunga Tonga underwater volcano eruption. It seems that water vapor is a greenhouse gas and as such contributes to climate warming. The geology guy estimates that this volcano is contributing about 10% more water vapor to the atmosphere which is likely slightly increase the global temperature for at least a decade. Oh, joy! Here is the episode if you like watching things volcano or geology related. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgsNYGkkIAE

For tall ship watchers, I expect to see Pride of Baltimore and Niagara pass by the webcams on the St. Clair River sometime this morning. There will be five chances to see them traverse the 40-mile stretch. Aside from Streamtime Live's three cams, Boat Nerd has two now, the one at Port Huron and the one at St. Clair.

Oh, and just saw that Port Huron's annual Float-down is scheduled for Sunday. Lots of fun watching them all in their inner-tubes and other raft contraptions.

Marilyne

Good Morning from a cool and foggy coastal California.  The temps here  have been in the high 90's and low 100's this week, so the fog, ("The cold white ghost of the sea"), will help to bring the numbers back down to normal range.  Normal for us,  is in the mid 80's most of the Summer.

I haven't heard from Jean in a couple of days, so I'm hoping she will feel like writing  a few words today.   I will tell her that her friends here in Bait and Tackle, are thinking about her and asking about her.  I'll name each one of you.

MarsGal - I'm going to remember  to watch the tall ships today, so I can finally see The Pride of Baltimore!   The St Clair River cam, used to be one of my favorites, but I've neglected all the cams this Summer.  Your mention of the Port Huron Float Down, reminds me of a cam I like called Charlevoix.   On alternate Sunday's, they have a boat parade that was such fun to watch.  Beautiful boats of all kinds, but also lots of decorated kayaks, row boats,  home made rafts and boats filled with flags and people waving and singing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeZbPbqO-6M

I have a lot more to say, so will try to get back later. Right now I have to eat some breakfast and have another cup of coffee.  It's only a little after 8:00 AM here.

CallieOK

Good Morning,

Even cooler this morning than "not so hot" - as weather gurus have been calling a slight dip in temperatures.  I've deadheaded plants in pots and given them a drink of Miracle-Gro - plus filled the birdbath and made sure the bird feeder didn't need filling.
First load of laundry is in the washer.
Time for a "sit-down"!!!!

MarsGal, thanks for reminder of ship watching channels.  Just barely saw the tall ship go under the PH bridge and glad to know about Float Down.  I've been concentrating on some bird-watching channels and haven't kept up with the ships as I should. Bird-watching is now over because chicks have fledged (flown away) except for an Albatross in New Zealand and it's about to figure out how to lift itself off the ground with those huge wings it's been exercising.

Well, Piffle re: your continuing house woes!  There's probably a "wise saying" about fixing one thing and two others break.

Re: the underwater volcano contributing to climate change.  I still think this old planet has had major changes throughout the ages (such as the Ice Age) - and we just happen to be the humans living through this one.

Marilyne, thanks for mentioning the Charlevoix cam.  I have it in my Favorites but haven' looked at it in a long time.  Didn't know about the alternate Sunday parade and will check it out.  Did they have one last Sunday (the 14th)?

I must have missed the comment about Jean being the one in Hospice Care; thought it was her daughter.  Please add my name to the ones concerned.

Washer is "yoo-hooing" so Sit-Down is over...for a while.  ;)

Enjoy your day, Everyfriend.

MarsGal

I am glad to hear that someone got to see at least one tall ship. I completely missed them what with people coming and going and sister phone calls. We will be doing lunch again tomorrow at a Chinese restaurant I took her to recently. She took a shining to it, and since she needs to take her Oreck into a shop near there she wants to stop there again.

So, the mystery of the water in the basement is apparently solved. It was in fact the one that had pretty much been ruled out -- the toilet. When Teddy came to remove the offending screen door so I could use the back door, he crawled around the thing and found that the tank was leaking through a bolt that was hard to see. I think he used his cell-cam to view the back. He emptied the tank sopped all the water up and told me to keep an eye on it to see if I get any water from elsewhere. I was down there a few hours later and the water was almost all dried up already. Well, as they say, three's the charm. Ted is a very big asset to his boss. He is a real problem solver, puzzling out what is wrong and what needs to be done. I told is boss that and he agreed. I think he was pleased that I noticed. Since I rarely use the toilet, the tank is staying empty until he can get back to fix it. Other than that, the new curtain rods will be in tomorrow or Saturday which he will help me hang. The windows are high and hard for me to reach since I don't have a proper stepladder.

Glad someone mentioned the "Cams"; However, I must have removed all of them from my toolbar.  Some nice person, I'm sure, will post a list on here, so I can resume watching the ships come in and go out.  That is such fun.

MarsGal

Here is the current list of StreamTime Live web cams. These include the ships and two plane cams. https://www.youtube.com/c/StreamTimeLive

Boat Nerd has three live webcam sites: https://www.youtube.com/user/boatnerd

San Diego has four individual live webcams and one that is a rotating "switch feed" of them. That is the one I watch the most. https://www.youtube.com/c/SanDiegoWebCam

Here is the Diluth Harbor cam site: https://www.youtube.com/c/DuluthHarborCam1 Lots of live feed choices.

I've taken to saving the main pages rather than the individual webcam sites because when site goes down, I don't have to find it and save the new web cam site link.

Oh super! This is just gross beyond words. Sensitive stomachs, etc. need not read. This guy lives the other side of town, but on the same street as me. Not only that, he lives across the street from a church with a big graveyard. I've never seen him before (thank goodness). https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/human-body-parts-sold-on-facebook-leads-to-arrest-of-enola-man/ar-AA10OcxK?ocid=msedgntphdr&cvid=96f1ac3c91df4ae5a4e182da22a8daea The New York Post has pix, from where I don't know. The locals aren't showing these. Check out the guy's teeth for heaven's sake. https://nypost.com/2022/08/19/pennsylvania-man-tried-to-buy-stolen-body-parts-to-resell-on-facebook/ Even the Daily Post in the UK is running the story. Is the NY Post a yellow journalism rag like the UK Daily Post?

On a very much nicer note. Sue and I did lunch at the Red Lobster today. She had the Shrimp Fettuccini and I had Shrimp Scampi. Plus, we each indulged in a mixed drink. Even though I had a lunch special, it was still enough to fill me up so that I couldn't find space to order a chocolate cake or brownie with ice cream. Bummer!

MaryPage

I am a Big Time shrimp lover.  In fact, I had shrimp for dinner tonight.

My last husband & I enjoyed going out to eat.  It got so ?hat he would decide what he wanted to order, put down his Menu, and say to me:  "So what kind of shrimp are you going to order?"

Vanilla-Jackie

Mary Page...
... how did you answer " go on, surprise me "  ;D

MaryPage

I honestly don't remember one particular day to tell you about, Jackie.  Bob died clear back in 2006.  But what I CAN tell you is that I did not order Shrimp Scampi, as I find that such a silly name for a dish.  Think about it!  Why in the world did someone name their recipe "Shrimp Shrimp?"  Beats me, but I find it just silly stuff.  No doubt it tickled the fancy of the cook who did it.

Good Morning Everyone!  Hope you are all looking forward to a pleasant Summer Sunday.  All is quiet here, and I expect it to remain that way throughout the day.  I'm enjoying my first cup of coffee right now, so still fairly early here . . . 7:30.

Mary Page and Jackie - I saw your posts first thing this morning about Scrimp Scampi, and had to immediately go to Google, and take a look.  Sure enough, "Scampi" means nothing more than Shrimp!  And all these many years, I thought scampi was some sort of rich Italian sauce.  It's been so long since I've been to a seafood restaurant, that I can't remember the last time I had the pleasure - but now will be looking forward to ordering it next time I'm in Santa Cruz.

I hope we soon hear from Jenny?  I saw on Facebook, that they had a lovely Memorial Service for her father.  All of Jenny and Bob's sons were there, along with her brother and others.  Sounded like a beautiful tribute to Dad.    I'm sure she will eventually drop in to tell us about it.

I'm still hearing from Jean every couple of days.  She is not doing as well, which is to be expected.

Beverly - I sure did enjoy the pictures of the birthday party for the twins and Keani.  Love the way they set up the three highchairs!  Hoping that next weekend, We will see our youngest great-grandson?  They live quite a ways away, but hope to drive the distance to attend the family party.  Casey Michael, is now three months old.    I've seen lots of pictures, but this will be the first time to see him in person! ❤️

MarsGal - sounds like your kitchen is just about finished and will soon be usable?  Please update us?

They say we learn something new everyday, even at our ages...well i have learnt this today...

Quoting: " The difference between scampi (langoustine) and prawns is that the scampi belong to the lobster family and prawns to the shrimp family.... "

Hm, so now we know...seems scampi and shrimp aren't related afterall...

MarsGal

Marilyne, I have curtains, window shelves and hanging plants to put up and finish finding places in my cabinets to place everything. I just did my first grocery shopping in several weeks to refill my fridge. Changes in the cabinet configuration from my old ones mean changes in where I put things now. The cats are spending a lot of time on the kitchen floor. I think they like it.

HELLO TO ALL.

I apologize for not posting in so long, but life has been very hectic recently.

Thank you, MARILYN, for posting about my father's memorial. It did go well and everyone seemed pleased in general about the service, the gathering afterwards and our family time together.  I loved that all of our sons and their families were able to be together.  Dr. Dave arranged for a professional photographer to take photographs of us and we all look forward to seeing the pictures.  Our last professional photo was 5 years ago at our 50th wedding celebration.  We have added two grandsons since then and the ones in the picture have changed so much‼️

We all know that life goes on after a death in the family, and this morning I was feeling pretty low, but after reading all of the past posts from all of you I got the boost I needed to kick myself and realized how blessed I really am.

I think of you all everyday and and pray for the individual ones that need the extra prayers.

Thank you, Marilyn for the updates about our Jean.  Some families have been through so much and my heart aches for Jean and her family🙏

CALLIE, special prayers for Mandi.  Bless her for insisting that the family continue with there lans for the meet up in Leadville.  I hope they all enjoyed their time together.

RICK, so happy to read you are home after the hospital visit.  I hope you continue to feel stronger each day and that the doctors feel your heart issue is getting better.

SANDY, I am certainly glad the retirement people made the mistake and that you are indeed alive and doing well‼️🤪

BEVERLY, I think of you daily and the struggle you face as you go on with life with out your Chape.  I am thankful you have your little grands and the family to help you through🦋. When you commented about your fatigue.....all I could think about is how I can relate to that.  At times I can hardly put one foot in front of the other one😩😩 HUGS to you🥰🥰

My "doctoring" continues and I hope I am nearing the end of all the testing that National Jewish has been doing for me.  They certainly have done a wonderful job of caring for me and I am praying that SOON they can say that nothing going on is too serious, and I can move on and enjoy my life more healthy than I was when I started with them🙏🙏🦋🦋

My best to you ALL.  I  hope to keep in better touch and find you all doing well!

Denver, - Saw my Cardiologist today and he thinks the irregularity on my EKG was due to the Cellulitis which struck again. However, another Doctor in his group wants me to use a Monitor for a week. Knowing that there is nothing obviously wrong is a mental relief.

Rammel, I just finished with a week of wearing a Holter Monitor.  It wasn't too bad to deal with size wise, but it started itching about half way through the week and nearly drove me CrAzY.....short driven, BTW🤪🤪 Better to be safe and do this to make sure.  Good luck‼️

Jenny -  Good to see you checking in!  Sounds like your Dad's  Memorial Service, was perfect in every way.  So glad that all of your sons were there, and that you had a professional photographer there to take photos.  I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the whole family.

MarsGal -  You mentioned ordering curtains for your kitchen window?  I'm interested in what you decided on?   I like the cheerful look of curtains, much more than the the more formal look of blinds or shades.  Hope you're enjoying your new appliances?   What kind of fridge did you get?   My new one is a side by side, which isn't as efficient as other styles, but I'm used to that style, so wanted it again!  We'll never use the water/ice cube maker, but all side by sides come with that feature now - so that part is wasted space for us.

Callie -  I'm not sure about the schedule of the Sunday Boat Parade, along the Charlevoix canal/river?   I've missed it so far this Summer, but hope maybe this Sunday, or Labor Day weekend they will have the final one for the season?

Jackie -  I keep meaning to tell you how much I like your new avatar.  Pink roses are my favorites so It's always a pleasure to see a picture.  How is your new haircut holding up?   I had my hair cut around the same time as you did, and mine is already grown out and getting that shaggy unkempt look.  :tearhair:

Rick -  Great news, that your Cardiologist didn't see any major problems that needed to be addressed.    Good idea to wear the halter monitor for a week, just to make sure!

Vanilla-Jackie

Marilyne...
...have to admit, Roses are my favourites especially the fragrant ones...yes time for a change of avatar...

MarsGal

Marilyne, I did not order new curtains, just new rods. The curtains I already have are fairly new and will do okay for now. I did didn't replace my refrigerator or my stove. The dishwasher I bought is not working. I suspect the guy who installed it may have crimped the water input line, because the electric is good and I can hear it, albeit very quietly, trying to do its' thing. I have to get him out again to pull the dishwasher and check the water connection. The water valve is definitely in the on position. It is terribly frustrating to have little things hanging on, especially with the dishwasher since the 30-day return policy to the store is almost up in a few days. After that I will have to go by the warranty restrictions.

Oscar and Shan are taking turns being pesty. It must be time for their afternoon meal.

I used to hear from Gloria.  Does anyone have any news?  She was not well, the last time I heard from her.  Junee

Junee - Gloria's most recent post was on July 22. You could ask in the Soda Shoppe. Nice to see your name pop up!

Donna and her husband are now in Vermont. They've been visiting family members and on Monday will start their hike on the Long Trail. This time the plan is to hike from Manchester, VT to Killington. Donna's daughter Erin and her family are staying in Donna's house for the next few weeks. Erin works from home so is able to continue working while here. I call them my "babysitters". My whole family insists on someone being down here, which I really appreciate.  If I need help, they can be here in minutes!

Our temps are in the 90s every day but nearly every afternoon we have a heavy rain. Haven't had the sprinklers on in weeks.

Rammel - Glad to hear you don't have any major problems at the moment. Do they have the cellulitis under control? That's awful stuff!

Jenny - Thank you for your kind words! You have been through some difficult times lately, yourself.

Marilyne - Did you get to see little Casey Michael? Still thinking about and praying for Jean!

I love shrimp, but my favorite way to eat them is boiled and chilled along with cocktail sauce.

For all of you I haven't mentioned, have a good night.

This was probably the fourth time I've had a cellulitis problem. I've been told that one becomes more susceptible to it once you've had it. Actual infection is gone now, but there is still healing.
I started with the monitoring and so far not a too bad thing to deal with. A sensor on the chest connects by Blue Tooth to a special cell phone that sends everything back to the "mother ship" where it is analyzed and reported to my Doc. Modern technology.

I have had it twice, both times on antibiotics and penicillin, i am left with swellings on both legs from ankles to mid way...yes cellulitis can kill if it travels up the legs...

Hi Jackie, Did you see the message Lloyd Hammond posted on Shout Box for you?  It's great to see that he is back in contact. I don't remember when I last saw a post from him.
