MARILYN, hope by now your family are all well. I have been watching the tv for days and grieving for our Queen.  Was pleased to see her arrive back in London. I was 4 years old and remember being shown a photo in the paper and told "A PRincess has been born" was not sure what a Princess was but followed all in papers as time past.  Saw her several times but most memorable was parked on side of the road in Brisbane, near Goverment House and the car came towards us, lit up inside and they were going to a special occasion at The City Hall.  She looked beautiful in evening clothes tiara with Philip by her side. Queen Elizabeth is surely the woman of the century.  I received a reply to my letter when she had reigned for 60 years and for my 100th Birthday. How precious is that..
I do come in and read at times but find it difficult to get to site at times.
Jackie I am so pleased you have found somewhere to  happily live and that you are as well as can be. I
Have my ups and downs healthwise but now move into my next century. 😊. Beverley love your photos and news and I keep an eye on Marypage and all in this place. Of course I remembered 9/11 as I arrived in USA just one week before that dreadful happening. Remembered well having breakfast with Whimsy and putting on tv to see second plane approaching.  Impressed with the way the Stars and Stripes appeared every where but the pictures on tv I will always remember.  Sorry about the print, have lost some skills on the computer.
To all, send my good wishes.

Marilyne

Hi Junee  :)  Good to see your message this evening!   I was thinking about you the past couple of days, because I remembered your 100th birthday in August, when you received a  card from Queen Elizabeth.   That's a real treasure for you to have, and to pass down to your daughter or granddaughter.    I wonder if King Charles, will continue that tradition, to have birthday cards sent to those turning 100 years old?  I hope so.

Thank you for asking about my daughter.   She was quite sick for the first couple of days, with all the symptoms, including fever, cough  and pains, but is feeling much better today.  She hopes to go back to work on Monday.

Joanne/Tome - I agree with you, that it was an awesome history lesson, to watch the procession from Buckingham Palace to the Westminster Hall, where the Queen will lie in state, until the funeral service on Monday.  It was a beautiful and emotional sight, to see the family members, and everyone else marching that distance, to the steady beat of the drums. Such a sad and mournful sound.

The YouTube Channel I was watching was called Sky News, which I think is from Australia?   If you go to YouTube, you will see lots of different channels like BBC, and also one called the Royal Family Channel.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghK7Cl3t48g

Marilyn, sorry about that e-mail. I am writing here as know it will arrive. Problem is I have had to change my e-mail address and it is having problems doing so.
You playing solitaire etc, I do so also. Lovely to hear your news, will write when fixed.  Junee💞

MaryPage

The WHITE HOUSE
will send out birthday letters for the important older birthdays, as well.  Anyone can request them.  I have forgotten what age they start at, but I think it is sixty.  Sixty, Seventy, Eighty, Ninety, One Hundred and any number at all past 100.  Nice letter, too.  You should request these months ahead.  And you are stuck with the signer being whomsoever is the current president, your choice or no!  But then, you could figure that out for yourself!

MarsGal

Now that you mentioned it Marilyne, I checked up on Sky News. I always thought Sky News was a UK thing with Sky News Australia being a branch. Well, it used to be. Sky News Australia is no longer affiliated with Sky News in the UK even though it kept the name, just tacking on Australia behind it. Sky News is owned by, and what a surprise, Comcast and NBC Universal. There are several other affiliations with Sky News, like Sky News Arabia (joint venture with Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corporation, and it provides content for Yahoo! News.

Not much to report here except that I appear to have acquired tendonitis in my wrist. I've been using a compression wrap but decided to order a splint type wrap too. It should arrive today.

Marilyne

MarsGal -  My daughter has all streaming channels where she is living now. (Sierra foothills near Yosemite).  No cable there, and the apartment building here she lives doesn't allow the Satellite dish.   One of her channels is Sky News, which she says is coming from Australia?    She likes it a lot, because unlike  our  mainstream network news, the Australian/Sky News covers all sides of  every newsworthy issue happening in the USA and everywhere else.  It is definitely fair and balanced.   Sounds like our old  Huntley/Brinkley  or  Walter Cronkite?      I'm planning to look into subscribing to it, if it's available here?

phyllis

Marilyne, it is for that same reason that I sometimes watch BBC on PBS or streaming.  Long ago I gave up on our national and local news reports because I do not trust them to be unbiased.

Good News! Mandi's liver enzymes have gotten to an acceptable level, and she was able to start the new cancer "management med" today!  Hope the side effects are minimal and it works to control whatever it's supposed to control.

Re: news watching.  I "heartily dislike" all the opinions/"explanations" by commentators in general. If I can't watch a speech/debate/"whatever" live, I usually watch the PBS report.  It seems to have both sides represented.

I have enjoyed ABC's replay of the various ceremonies for Queen Elizabeth on "Dateline"; they actually kept the comments to a minimum.  Not sure I'll manage to get up at 4:30 CDT on Monday to watch the funeral live and hope they'll rebroadcast it that night.

Saw in today's paper that "Dynasty" will have the Series Finale tonight.  Hesitate to mention that I've watched that sort of show but I'd rather see a "soap opera" than all the Crime/Legal/Fire/Medical shows.
Have been watching Celebrity Family Feud and The $100,000 Pyramid this summer but Jimmy Fallon's Password is just too silly for me.

Life has become pleasantly busy for me lately.  I've started participating in meetings of a women's organization I belong to (P.E.O.) and have been to one Social and the first regular meeting of the year.
Social was a showing of the movie "Family Camp" which was written and produced by the son of a member, who also had the starring role.  It played in local theaters, and I understand it was to have limited showings in other areas nationwide. It's about two families who have to share a yurt at a family church camp.  Of course, they have different viewpoints of what it's supposed to be like- and that leads to some really funny scenes.    "Mom" provided a video so we had our own showing.  Social Committee served "food you might get at a movie" - hot dogs with all the trimmings, bags of chips, and mini candy bars.

I'd had problems with my hearing aids not working well so made an appointment with the audiologist.  Learned that even rechargeable batteries have to be replaced eventually!!  Imagine that?!?  :D

Have also enjoyed several evening patio times with "roofmate" (friend who lives on the other side of the duplex).  Love the long summer evenings when it isn't so terribly hot.

Off to see how the writers conclude the Dynasty shenanigans.

MaryPage

Lovely to hear the good news about Mandi, Calli.  I am wishing with all my might that she beats this cancer rap and gets a clean health outcome.

I am, and always have been, a big time news junkie.  My Dad used to listen to Lowell Thomas on the radio at dinner time when I was growing up.  It was like a religion to him; we never missed Lowell Thomas.  I can still tune him in on my memory stations and hear his lovely voice proclaim: "So long, until tomorrow!"

Most of our national news reporters are really dedicated to the art of digging up the Truth about all matters.  They go everywhere, putting their lives on the line.  We here in this country still have a Free Press, and I hope I never see otherwise.  Just observe Russia at present:  they were told Ukraine was a Nazi state, and they had to go in and eradicate those Nazis and take over!  All lies.  Listen to the Ukrainian people!  They are telling it like it is.  Does anyone besides me remember when we called them: "THE UKRAINE?"  I wonder when and why that changed.

CallieOK

Thank you, MaryPage.  Unfortunately, Mandi's cancer is not curable but the doctor has told her it is "manageable" with treatment. The cancer is in her pelvic bones and at least one lung.  She gets a bone-strengthening shot every week and takes an anti-estrogen pill every day (she's 61).  The other pill is a "chemo" pill that is supposed to shrink the tumors or keep them from growing and that's the one that raised her liver enzymes.  The new chemo pill is supposed to work without doing that.

I agree that the national news reporters try to be accurate.  My objection is to their "editorializing".  Sometimes it's with words but it's just as likely (IMO) to be a tone of voice or the phrasing of a question to the "reporters in the field" or someone they're interviewing.  And interviews seems to be with someone who will booster the point of view they want us to accept.  They also tend to show the same videos over and over and over and.....

I guess this is a television "thing" because, of course, the radio reporters couldn't do any of that.

My Sooners are about to start a football game.  Off I go to :cheer:

Enjoy your day, Everyfriend.

Marilyne

Good morning to all of our friends here in Bait and Tackle - and to everyone else who posts anywhere in Seniors and Friends.  There are a few folks who only look in every day and read but never post anywhere?  We would love it if they would join us in conversation, and we could get to know them.

Callie - So good to hear that Mandi, is ready for her chemotherapy. Please keep us updated on her progress?  I've heard of the movie, "Family Camp".  Maybe it was you who mentioned it before, but seems to me I read an article online somewhere about it . . . the two families who share the yurt at family camp.  Sounds like an intriguing set of circumstances for a good story!  Please keep us updated on Miss Ellen, and her life in NYC.   Also I like hearing about the other two grandchildren.

Phyllis - Good to see you posting here!  I do like both PBS and BBC news.  We watch the local and or World news every night between 5:00 and about 6:30 or 7:00, PDT.  Unfortunately BBC news is on earlier or later, so we usually miss that one, but tune in off and on to see anything special that's happening in the UK.  I have't yet looked into getting the Sky News Australia, but will post here when and if we decide to subscribe.
By the way, I meant to mention your post here a couple if weeks ago, when we were talking about saddle shoes.  I got such a kick out of your story about getting the brand new pair of shoes, and then going outside and deliberately scuffing and dirtying them up!  ;D

Mary Page - I've always been a "News Junkie" too.  When I was a child during the War Years, I read the newspaper every night to learn about what was happening in Europe and in the Pacific, where my Dad was stationed.  Then I discovered that there were lots of other interesting stories, besides the War news, so "reading the paper" became something I looked forward to every evening.    We also listened to the radio news every night.  The two news broadcasters  I remember best,  were Jimmy Fiddler, and Gabriel Heater.
Yes, I do remember when we called it, The Ukraine.

Hope we hear from MarsGal, Joanne, Jackie, Junee and Rick, today. It was nice to see a message from Shirley here this past week.   It would be good to see a post from Jenny?  Hope she is doing okay?    All others on S&F are welcome to join the conversation and post here at any time.

RAMMEL

Marilyn, - This is "Norms Bait and Tackle" but I see I haven't posted here today. I did post over in "The Soda Shop".
It just dawned on me what one of the problems here is in regard to posts, or lack of. I tend to respond to posts that are already here, but seem to fail to originate a post. To originate a post one must first "locate" the place they want to post. I was thinking it might be good to trim down the discussions that don't get used to make it easier for people to navigate the site.  Norm's and the Soda Shop are of a more general nature - nothing really out of place and easy for all.

Marilyne, you know, you just hit upon a matter that has puzzled me (and others) mightily of late, and you have answered the question, I do believe!

The talking heads have been trying to figure out why there is this HUGE drop off in voting in the off year (this year, for instance) elections.  There just has seemed, for eons now, to be no logical answer.

But you have hit on it, without mentioning it, actually.  For the World War II (me) generation, at least.  We were fully in and part of that war.  It was the MAJOR part of our every day.  Seriously.  And we had no TV, and many of us had little to no access to films.  Gas was rationed, plus cars broke down and there were no tires or parts.  When you added in public transport fares, where such was available, it became unaffordable.

So we READ THE NEWSPAPERS.  And rushed to buy LIFE magazine, with its wealth of photographs.  We had stakes in that war.  Stakes of the heart.  Fathers, uncles, brothers, you name it.  Female relatives, as well and all.  I had Army nurses in that conflict.  And here I clinch the debate:

We kept a lifelong habit of reading and listening to the news.  The younger generations have no shared experience.  This is why the talking heads I have heard have said the polls show 80% (EIGHTY PER CENT!) of them do not take time out from their busy days to read OR listen!

That's why they don't even know there IS an election in the off years!

You can't miss a humongous, coast to coast general election every 4 years.

I think I've finally got it!!!  What think you?

Marilyne

#22273
Mary Page, I think you're right . . . and there is more to it as well.  The majority of us in the oldest generation, always vote in every election, and always have.  The younger generations care, but  have more of a positive attitude, that an election will turn out in their favor, no matter whether they vote or not.  Things have always been done for them throughout their lives, and they kind of relax between the big elections.   Of course that's not true of everyone, and I do think that most of the generation after ours, the Baby Boomers, also see's the importance of voting in every election.   The younger ones, not so much.

We became self sufficient at a young age, and didn't expect parents or anyone else to take care of us or make decisions for us.  I registered to vote as soon as I turned 21, and I'm sure you did too.  We looked forward to voting in every election!   I believe it was a big mistake to lower the voting age to 18.   Eighteen year olds, are immature and not really interested in elections, or ready to make an informed decision on who and what they want to vote for.  Two of my great-grands are 18, and I can't imagine either of them being at all interested in this upcoming election. There're great kids, but they are still very immature.

Sorry, I'm going on and on here with lots of scattered thoughts .. . not really getting to the point, which is that the differences in us, and the younger generations, is vast.  We have totally different priorities.    Voting in every election is just one of those differences.

(I just came back after a couple of hours, hoping to clean this post up, so that it makes sense, but  I'm afraid it's still looking pretty hopeless.)

Tomereader1

I guess that all of us, in our dotage, remember the WWII years and how things were back then.  I had three brothers in the services, my dad too.  I remember listening to the news reports on the radio, reading Life magazine.  We didn't have a newspaper subscription, but from time to time, someone would leave one that we could read. Ration books,  shortages of lots of items.  Since we couldn't get tires or parts for cars, everyone did a lot of walking. In an emergency, you had to call a cab.
Say if you needed to get to the hospital. Not a whole lot of bus service either because of fuel. We put the flags with stars in our windows showing how many relatives were in the service.

Tomereader1

I probably may have already said, but the coverage regarding the loss of HRH Queen Elizabeth II was absolutely awesome, fantastic, etc. on BritBox, which is a subscription channel (I got it to watch my British mystery programs).  The Procession to Westminster Hall was exactly on-time, and the commentators were so respectful and knowledgeable, no unnecessary blah-blah-blah like our US commentators quite often do. They know the value of silence and when to speak to educate the viewers on the protocol, etc. Just watching that was totally worth my subscription cost.

Thank you all my S & F's friends for all who took time with your postings of our Queen 10 days ago ( it was comforting to me )...yes she has been gone 10 days now, and will finally be laid to rest with her Prince on the 11th day, tomorrow...Our Queen touched many of your - our hearts, as i know, some of you had had connections with UK during her reign, and have had personal stories to tell..

Good morning, everyone. Looks like it is going to be another nice day here.

We had a dip down to 53o the other night and it appears to have activated a bout of arthritis pain. Also, I woke up one morning last week with wrist pain that feels like it might be tendonitis. I have no idea how that happened. I am feeling a bit worse for wear after mowing the backyard on Friday, so I have been mostly sitting and reading. It isn't helping any because when I get up, I feel all stiff again. So now the bottle of ibuprofen is seeing some activity which does help.

I think you are right, Rammel. The discussions could be pared down a little or combined. I see discussions that haven't had any activity since 2016 still listed. They could probably be archived.

I think I have told you before about my great grandson, Miles.  He of the "Today I am going to learn to fly, and I need to make a parachute" caper.  Miles is in second grade this year.  He was recently absent from The Country School, where his mother teaches Science to all the grades, due to a bug ravaging our area at present.  Melissa, mother of MIles (actually, I probably need to start putting that in caps) said she really learned how popular Miles is when so very many children came up and asked her about him and commented how very nice he is.  Melissa was touched, but his P.E. teacher found in him a problem she swears she has never encountered previously.  Well, I just bet she hasn't!

She is teaching the class to play Soccer.  Turns out Miles might make a good player, only.  Only he does not think it "nice" to take the ball from the other team.

A good Sunday HELLO to ALL‼️

I am embarrassed to say that I have been negligent in posting.  I truthfully have not had much to say nor to share.  I sure appreciate that you mention me and I w8ll do my best to be better about at least saying HELLO.

We have been busy lately and that certainly has helped my mental status.

Last weekend we drove to Cortez Colorado to my 56th class reunion.  It was a beautiful 7 hour drive.  Seeing old friends is always a treat.  We chatted for 3 full days and we STILL had things to say🤪

As we drove through the Buena Vista / Salida area, I sure thought about you, SHIRLEY. It was beautiful going through the San Louise Valley.  My heart was mighty full of joy getting back to the community that was so very precious to my family when I was growing up.

We visited Telluride....what a disappointment it was to see what has happened to that wonderful little community.  The traffic was awful and I could hardly recognize much of anything in the town.  They call this progress?

Today we enjoyed going to a Octoberfest in the community where Dr. Dave lives.  We go every year and it is always enjoyable. Not quite as much fun when one can not have a good German Bier to drink, but the Keto diet we are on frowns on drinking something that is like eating two sandwiches 🤪🤪🤪

Next weekend we are going to Chicago to one of our daughter-in-laws fathers memorial.  My bucket list has always been to get to Michigan, one state of four in the continental US that we have not been.  I have wanted to go to Mackinaw Island every since seeing the movie SOMEWHERE IN TIME.  My dream is coming true.  My only regret is that Norm and his sister are no longer living, so can not see them😩😩

Octoberfest was fun yesterday, inspite of the fact they were already out of the Octoberfest Bier that I was hoping to have a few sips of‼️🤪. We arrived just 40 minutes after it started.  At least I did not have to cheat on my diet🤪🤪🤪. The normal Austrian "oompah" band was not there and everyone was disappointed‼️ There was a band there but they were not playing any German Music nor anything I would enjoy. 😩🥲 oh well, I will look forward to next year‼️

We are going to Dr. Dave's to watch our Broncos and have dinne4 together.  I sous vide'd a tri-tip roast and he is supplying the rest of the veggies.  Always enjoy seeing the family.

JACKIE, I contacted you regarding The Queen's passing.  Many of us care so deeply for The Royals.  I personally was very sad.  She had a wonderful long reign and is going to be missed.  I, too, got to see her in person when we lived in England.  We stood on a corner and she passed within a couple feet of me.....what a beautiful lady.  I will forever cherish that moment 🥰🥰🥰

I wish you all a good rest of your day.

The clock alarm is set for five o'clock in the morning.  I plan to watch every moment of the Queen's services.

Mary Page, my DVR is set to start recording the funeral service, at 2:00 AM Pacific time.  I'll probably start watching as soon as I wake up in the morning, which is usually early.

I, too have set the DVR to catch every bit of the coverage of the Queens Final Farewell🦋  Back in the day we had to be up to catch anything like this.  Thankful we can now watch at a better time for us.

Good night and sleep well.

I marvel at how everyone, our UK Royals, the various Militaries and World leaders etc, etc, has rehearsed and rehearsed for this day over several years, the organizing, the precision to every detail and its protocol, and not knowing how, when, or where, our Queen would eventually die...

Edited: my eyes keep focussing on Prince Williams boy, Prince George, as one day after Prince Williams reign of King, he will will be King after King Charles his father, yet watching him at his grand mama's funeral i wonder what is going through this young innocent's mind, of his future yet to come... well this wont happen in my lifetime..

Noticed only one, Prince Edward dabbing his eyes ( overcome with emotion )  with a white handkerchief whilst sitting facing the coffin whilst The Right Hon Patricia Scotland KC Commonwealth Secretary General was giving her reading on the lectern...

Good afternoon Evreryone!

I too,  have been watching the services
for The  Queen.    I just coouldn't miss
it,   But it was awfully long  ( 10 days )

At times it was very emotional.

Sadly Sarah Ferguson  has really aged
and I was very surprised.  Of course
Prince Andrew is another Royal who
has disappointed so many with his
upcoming trial about sex offences
and his relationship with convicted sex abuser
Jeffrey Epstein (now deceased)

Makes one wonder just what is this
world coming to?

I couldn't help to keep my eyes
glued to the tv every sense the Queen
passed on.

History in the making it was!!

Hope everyone is happy and well

GOOD MORNING.

SANDY, you have summed up many of the feelings of this history in the making.

I have watched in full the coverage of Queen Elizabeth's final farewell this morning.  One can not help but feel emotional 😭  I feel blessed that I have been lucky enough to to have been in England two times in my lifetime.  Having stood on a corner and have the Queen pass by within a couple of feet of me; looking into her beautiful blue eyes as she passed. Having my mother-in-law being a British citizen has certainly encouraged my interest in always keeping up with the British Monarchy.  King Charles III was born on Bob's Birthday and Charles and Diana married on our wedding anniversary date.   I have seen that CROWN in person....how cool is that?   Just my personal thoughts for the moment🦋

Thinking about EVERYONE across the world who are able to share in the momentous occasion.  My wish is that it makes us all stop and realize how precious life is and help us all to do our best to make our lives as special as they can be.

I love to quote what Queen Elizabeth said to the American people on 911.  "Grief is the price we pay for love"

Been sitting with an elegant dressed lady, been holding a good conversation with, and still with all her faculties and...may i mention ( with disbelief ) her age is 105, with a birthday coming up next week Tuesday...not sure if 105 now or 105 or 106 next Tuesday...Just that i was seated at the table at the side of her and told she was 105...
