Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

I just finished watching the first episode of a six episode miniseries on PBS called The Durrells In Corfu.  I just had to catch it because I was such a big fan of Lawrence Durrell and his writings, especially The Alexandria Quartet.  So Brilliant!
This series is loosely from the book by the youngest of the 4 Durrell children, Lawrence being the eldest.  His name is Gerald, but in this series he is but a boy, and is called Gerry.
They were all brilliant and eccentric, and this series takes place during the thirties, when the family (father deceased) really did leave England and live in Corfu for a few years.

Your programs sound so interesting MaryPage.  Almost makes me wish I could watch them - but it is not going to happen.

angelface555

Bubble, it is not so much as the programs are interesting or not. It is though her enthusiasm that we ae interested.

Hi Gals, I've stripped the beds and have the sheets in the washer and redded up things a little. Also called a friend in HH who has a birthday today.  I have some other calls to make this afternoon. One is to find a sub for my bridge next week. That's the day of my appt with the neurosurgeon. I hated to make it on bridge day, but I took it when I could get it.

I tape Poldark at a different time as there are 2 other shows I tape on Sundays that don't have an alternate time. I enjoy it too, especially the scenery.

Jeanne, sorry I misunderstood you on the carotids.  Yes, I have mine checked periodically too. I've never had my leg veins checked but I don't have varicose veins or problems with them.

Mary, nice that you are knitting a sweater for Sarah.  I imagine you are swimming and then on to playing bridge this afternoon.  Have fun.

Sue, sounds like you had a lot healthier meal than BK, although you probably missed the company.  Just thinking about BK gives me heartburn!  I can handle McDonalds but not BK. I usually get a fish sandwich there.  Yesterday, I saw that they are building a new Arby's about a mile from our front gate.  That is my favorite fast food since it is so much less greasy.  However, I seldom eat at any of them unless I am away from home at noon and still planning to go somewhere else.

MP, Sandy is right, your enthusiasm always makes your posts interesting.

Hi to everyone and have a good day.  Sharon

Marilyn

Good Morning to everyone, Sue yes I think Harry Cat did find a place to hide during the worst of the storm.

Some days I just come here to read what everyoine has said and other days I have something to say. Not much going on here today, The sun came out and I took Freckles for a walk. I've had one of her t-shirts on her  since yesterday but it got wet from the street during our walk so took it off and washed it. She will be wearing it tomorrow whn we go visiting, to my hospice class and to the library. Very busy day tomorrow.

jane

Funny day here...overcast and 73 and humid!  Weird for mid October.  But, temps to start back down tomorrow...so real Oct weather, here we come.

I drove to Dbq this morning for my annual screening mammogram.  I see the surgeon next week for our annual "meeting"....been doing this for 27 years now!  He and I grew old together.   :2funny:
Now to be on pins and needles awaiting a possible phone call to come back in.  I know if I don't get that tomorrow, I'm good.

Woman doing the mammo was older...and said some women after a mastectomy won't come back because they believe the mammo gave them the cancer.  Sad.

Both those shows sound like what I like. I did start watching The Durrell in Corfu last night. Now the Australian one I have not found. Once it get going then the Library will buy it . Usually after it gets to Season 2.

Candy.  I use to be bothered with Bladder Inf. quite often years ago. Found out it was taking long soaks , Using bath Salts. I was told go to showers which I did. That was at least 40 years now. Not had one problem with BIs since. One time on a trip I took a bath in a Hotel to relax. Yes I got one then.
Found also that I can't use any kind of soap with lotions, or anything in it. Not even on my hands or body. Learned a lot over the years.

I've had a slow day--I didn't sleep well last night.  Tossing/turning and just generally restless.  So I didn't get up until almost 9:00 this morning.  I did get a walk in, brought the trash containers back up the driveway, and just putzed around until Tim stopped by.  I'm always glad to see him, but we had another conversation about changing my will--and I hate stuff like that.  I know I need to do it, but yuck!

Sandra, my neighbor, brought me a nice plate of food late this afternoon.  I'd already eaten, so put it in the fridge and will have it tomorrow.

I'm listening to "Smooth Jazz" on my TV's music station and am going to bed early.  I hope you've all had a good day and everyone is feeling well.

Sue

Sharon.  I don't have any Varicose Veins either. My mum did and that is one reason I had mine looked at as I had a start of one behind my knees. I sort of go for preventive Medicine going by what anyone in the family had over many years. I know that sometimes I feel like Dr. In The US think people should already have something before they come in and ask them to check things out.
I feel like they are the smart ones and I am the one with the Cheque book so I don't feel bad about asking questions. I have had some great Dr. over the years but many are retiring now .Quite a few dying. The young one coming in are not the same. Think things should  only take 15 min. Appointments. Some don't even sit down like the use to.
JeanneP

Sue, do what Tim tells you and get the will done.  I had the meeting with a new attorney last week to get mine done to reflect the new situation - will, power of attorney, durable power of attorney, medical stuff, etc.  Just something has to be done.

Darlene, sorry about the UTI.  I haven't had many, but now I take cranberry pills every day as a preventative measure. I hope yours resolves quickly.  I hate having to take antibiotics - I always get a yeast infection.  I'm sure I'll have one after this knee replacement because I'm sure I'll be taking lots of antibiotics.  Yuck.

I did do my swimming and bridge today.  I came in second last week (four tables), and that was good to hear.  I'm sure I didn't do that well this time.  But I had some interesting hands and got a play a lot of successful defense (always fun).  One of my swimming buddies fell yesterday - on her face.  She wound up with a broken nose, stitches, and dental surgery today.  At least she didn't break a big bone, but still.  I really hate it for her.

Only two more days, and it can't come soon enough.  I went off my NSAIDs after Friday , and my body is really complaining.  I have an Rx for pain meds, but rarely take them.  That's not been true since yesterday.  Not fun at all. I didn't realize how much good the daily Rx does.  I'll surely be glad to get back on it regularly.

Darlene, the cranberry pills work for me too. The urologist told me to take them about 4 or 5 yrs ago. No UTI's since.  You can get AZO analgesic pills for a UTI OTC. They help with the pain and burning, but turn the urine orange.

Mary, I know what you mean about not realizing how much the NSAIDs help till you go off of them. I found that out when I had to do it for my back surgery.  They don't knock out all the pain, so you don't realize how much they do.  Hang in there.  Prayers for your surgery.  Ouch on your friend's fall.  Great on 2nd in bridge.

Sue, listen to Tim. Even if it is a pain, you want to leave everything in order when you pass and we never know when it will come.  Nice of your neighbor to bring you dinner.  Hope you slept better last night.

Today is my birthday so woke up to some lovely cards, a bouquet of flowers from John, and some chocolate croissants that Melanie had sent up frozen that just needed to be baked.  This afternoon I'm going to a Women's Fellowship group with a neighbor and this evening John is taking me to Mamma Mia's, a small family italian restaurant we like.  I'm sure I will hear from all the chicks too.  Jonathan called Sunday to wish both of us a happy birthday.

Marilyn, I guess you'll be busy with therapy visits. Hope it goes well.

Jeanne, my mother had varicose veins also, but I have no sign of them. I've always been careful to keep my legs up on an ottoman when sitting. I think that helps.

Another beautiful fall day here except that it is to be 82 which is a little warm.  Hope you all are enjoying your day.  Sharon

jane

Happy Birthday, Sherry!

Beautiful day here, too, and I'm slow in getting in gear again.

Only thing on the agenda is a haircut his afternoon and it's much needed.  I'Ve  got the laundry put away from yesterday...my pnly accomplishment, except for reading the CEdar Rapids paper...which doesn't take much time.   :2funny:

Happy Birthday, Sharon!!!

Not a great night, but not quite so much pain this morning.  All on my agenda was getting my pre-surgery haircut - and that's been done.  I used a Great Clips coupon, so it was only $6.00 - and I really got my money's worth.  I had it cut even shorter than usual.  LOL

Happy Birthday Sharon......do you buy the cranberry pills like at Walmart....or health food store?.  Darlene

MaryPage

Jeanne P, A Place To Call Home first appeared on Australian television in 2013, so it is not all that old a show.  And, as far as This area is concerned, the Washington DC, Baltimore MD, Annapolis MD megalopolis, it IS a brand new show, because they just started showing it in these parts on PBS channels this July.  It is an Australian import, and most wonderfully acted.  Takes place in 1953, for starters.  The frocks are marvelous.

Am really feeling concern about Molly, as we have had nothing from her for such a very long time, or at least it feels that way.  Perhaps she is very discouraged at all of the bad news out of Egypt.

Now I saw Molly Posting. Think it was yesterday. Now I havn't read anything going on in Egypt.  Now Syria. That place is awful.  Will be nothing left of it soon. Such a beautiful country once. When will there be any money in all those place that are being destroyed and For What. Just maniacs gaining nothing. They had so much at one time.

Darlene, I get my cranberry pills at Walmart.  Some are small coated tablets and some are large caplets - I don't know the difference, but try to get the smaller ones.  They're easier to swallow.

Darlene, I get almost all of my supplements from Vitamin World on line, but if I run out, I pick them up at CVS, etc.  I get the strongest extract available.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.  I had a nice time at the Fellowship.  Lori has called and Melanie is in Italy, so wished me happy birthday on line. Brian will probably call tonight.

I've been worried about Molly for some time. I do hope she checks in soon and that nothing is wrong.

Jeanne, I agree about Syria. Not much left to fight over now.    Sharon

Good afternoon, Buddies.  I did my morning walk and a load of laundry which I dried and put away--other than that, not much else.  I'm reading a James Lee Burke murder mystery with Dave Robichaeaux looking for the bad guys.  I spent a lot of time today trying to send him hints, but apparently he can't hear me.  The title is Pegasus Descending and I can't get my underline key to get under it!  If you like murder mysteries and a good detective story, Burke writes good ones.  Some of the bad guys are pretty awful, though,

I did revise my will after Bob died, leaving everything to my sons--but Tim thinks the way it is worded that if he predeceases Kris, she won't get anything.  Jon's share will go to Alex and Nick if he dies first and I don't know about Bill as although he has raised Andy, he has not adopted him.  I don't want them fussing over it--and I think they might.

MaryPage, I watched the Durrells first episode and will watch it again.  I'm not familiar with the book, so may check it out at the library.

I've had one varicose vein cut out (or stripped--I think the procedure is called that).  No problems since.  I'd had that left leg swelling a lot prior to the surgery.  If I'm going to be sitting for a long time--like at bridge--I wear knee high support hose.  that keeps the swelling down.

Mary, I hope all will go well with your surgery.  It won't be fun, but when you've healed and are walking again, you'll be glad you had it done now.  Friends here who've had it done said it is wonderful to be pain free.  I forget which daughter will be staying with you, but it would be nice if she could give us a short report.

Happy Birthday, Sharon.  It sounds like you're having a nice one.  Enjoy your night out at Mama Mia's.

Jane, I hope your haircut went well.  I always feel better after a haircut--even when she cuts too much off.  I know it will grow back soon enough!

Darlene, I hope the cranberry pills/juice/whatever helps.  No fun to be feeling bad with that.

Jeanne  Lee, thanks for the info about Molly.

Have a nice evening, Buddies.

Regarding wills.....

I have seen this happen, up close and personal
(to my brothers family),  that wills need to be
very specific,  because if there is an opportunity
for someone to take advantage  of the wording,
then they very likely will.

Their excuse will always be,  "if that is what
they really wanted,  then they would have
stipulated that" ....

So you can not depend on people
"doing the right thing" ...  Where
money and valuable are involved,
the gloves come off and someone
may unintentionally be left out,
leaving the family very very hurt,
and often times a split that can not
be repaired.

Better to be sure and not sorry,
especially if there is a question already,
of who is in line to get what.

Quarreling over estates, need to be
prevented,  when ever possible.

Morning, Buddies!
We're off to Iowa City today for Ray's appt at the Dental College.  I hope it's cooler today and less humid.

My haircut yesterday was much needed.  I'd been trying to let it go longer, but I just can't handle it.  So...back to shorter and easier, I hope, for me to manage.

Have a good Wed.

Jane

And I'm getting my hair cut TODAY, Jane!

First we got up at dawn and took fasting me to the vampire.  She was a new employee, a young Ashley.  I am used to an old Cecelia, who has apparently retired since my last draw.  But she was good:  got me on the first stick, bless her forever.

We celebrated and broke fast at Grump's, where they obligingly gave me a cranberry lemonade and a Ranchero omelet without peppers and with grits.  Yummy!

Now we are at home until noon, when I go to the hairdresser's and have my therapy session.  The latter goes with the former, all for one price!

Think I'll have a little nap first.

JeanneP

Been in the 80s all week but now today getting cold.  No sun at all and looks like rain. Will be dark early. Soon time will change and be dark by 5pm

Off to get new glasses I am going to try.  Up to now just worn glasses to read but tired of taking them on and off all the time. Losing them. So my eye doctor trying me with a new Prescription. Says I may be able to keep on and walk around a little in these. Give a try.  They had them back to me in 7 days. Just called to say in.

Jane.  I am going to try now to get my hair into a short Bob. All summer have had it cut every 3 weeks and so don't know if I will make it.  So far just the hair at my neck in the back bothering me. Hate it touching. My hair sort of curls a little more as it grows which makes it seem like it takes ages.. Did you go into Photo's. We all are showing photo of us when younger. Mine was long back then. But so easy. Won't go for it (To old). But try for a shorter type of cut.
