I'll try again.  I'm not on the computer I usually use and it is flickering all over.  I wrote something earlier, was almost finished, and away it went.  I don't know what causes that and Tom thinks i get my hands too close to the touch pad.  I'm trying so hard to avoid it.

This morning I started out at the dentist for cleaning.  After the hygienist was done, the dentist checked things over and he wants to put on a crown to one of my teeth.  I have to see how it affects my insurance - or vice versa - because crowns are expensive.  When I finished there, I went to my eye doctor in the same building and I will get new glasses - first since 2009 - so what I am using are old.  I know when we get older our eyes don't change as much as when we are younger.

Since it is Wednesday, Tom, Dot and I went to lunch.  Terry had just woke up so did not want to join us, Jan was working and her folks come with either or both Terry and Jan.  So just the three of us.  We headed for the Corner Bar in Rockford, but passed the Boulder Creek Golf Club which we all like, so went there instead.

I have now 4 of the big grocery stores within 2 miles of me that let you order on line. One will deliver and the other 3 you pick up.  Walmart being one of them. I don't care to shop for groceries with them.  Just go often for other things. They also have a couple things that I can't find in other stores.  I like my meat from one store who has a butcher department. All meats and chicken etc fresh. I don't care for packaged and frozen. I  get the Veg and such in another. Then I also have a Aldi across the street.  Like a few things the sell.
I have always enjoyed grocery shopping so hope keep that up.  Can't stand going to the Big Malls though.  I know what I want. Run in and get out fast.
JeanneP

Mary Ann

Jeanne, I have two big stores near me, no small ones and WalMart is far enough away and big enough that I don't care to shop there.  I am comfortable with meats and vegetables from either store.  Meijer is a large supermarket and Family Fare is a small one.  While Tom does my shopping now, he goes to Family Fare for me because he'd rather go to Meijer.  i'm for convenience rather than saving a few cents and I don't go to store after store to get foods.  Both stores are local.

I don't know when I've had four things going on in one day.  I think I mentioned my dental and eye doctor appointments, then Tom, Dot and I went out to lunch.  Tonight Annie was here and she and her dad (Tom) were going out for pizza so I went along.  Tomorrow should be more quiet!

Hi everyone on a bright sunny Thursday morning.  In a little bit I will leave to go to the lab at the University Hospital to have blood drawn in preparation for a routine doctor visit next Tuesday. I plan to stop on the way home at Aldi's to replenish the vegetable bin in the refrigerator.  I am not planning on going to coffee this morning as most of the men are on a tour to Branson, Missouri and the fellow I pick up suggested we just skip going this morning.  I didn't argue as it better fit into my plans for the morning.  Nothing else on the calendar for today.

Last evening there was a large crowd at the dinner at church.  The VA brought over 10 veterans from the spinal unit, who were all in wheelchairs.  Several aides were with them.  We also had several rescue or comfort dogs and their owners present, which was a nice touch.  Marilyn, I thought of you and Freckles when I saw the dogs.  We even got to pet one of them.

Mary Ann, you sure had a busy day yesterday.

JeanneP, we don't have any grocery stores that have a delivery service yet unless we use the regular online ordering and have it delivered by UPS.  Pat and I haven't been to a mall to shop for many years now and have no intentions of doing so in the future.

June Drabek

JeanneP, no need for you to order on line as long as you can get out and do it yourself. I too preferred doing it myself, but after three TIAs and I had to quit driving, it was wonderful to still rely on myself for shopping on line.

Mary Ann, you have had a busy day..me too..but mine was all done here on home grounds.  Went to choir practice, the residents Clinic for a bandage change, then on to exercise program. It is good to be finished and settled at home for the rest of the day.

Larry, you have become a member of a very loving Church. I'm happy for you. Having the Veterans over for dinner was a wonderful thing they did. It is amazing what dogs and other animals can do to help heal people..in more ways than just one.
As long as we are here, let's dance.

Beverly

See you all next week. Tomorrow we fly to Aruba for a week. It's an early celebration for our 60th wedding anniversary which is next June.  No sense in waiting for the actual date at our age!  ;)

Have a good week everyone.

Hi everyone on another beautiful day here in South Carolina. We were not under an alert for the wild fire smoke either yesterday or today.  The housekeeper is due here this morning and later this morning Pat and I are going to COSTCO.  My new glasses are ready and she needs to select some new frames and get a new prescription filled as her eyesight has changed.  That will probably be it for today.

I did fix her breakfast this morning.  However, last evening she helped fix the dinner.  We had a spaghetti squash that we fixed in the oven and a topping of Italian sausage heated in Marinara sauce with a green salad.  We have enough of the main dish for another good meal.

June, you are right about our church, it is a very loving and faring church.

Beverly, enjoy your week in Aruba.  That is a nice wedding anniversary gift for both of you.

Sandy

A trip to Aruba sounds fabulous Beverly...I hope that you find great weather and both have a very enjoyable time.

Beverly, what a nice gift to give each other, Enjoy!

To all of us receiving feline gifts. Cats are hunters and want to provide for their families. Think of it this way, you spent all afternoon slaving over a family meal and when they return, they throw it on the floor and shout "EWWW!"

I have been dealing with the spraying, medical issues, etc. and recently came down with hives of all things! I am having so much fun in my golden years!  >:(

Mary Ann

I do a couple of jigsaw puzzles each day.  One earlier this week was of a train in West Virginia that Jackwv had seen.  I don't know how far from Wheeling the town is.  Today, another puzzle was of an orange cat that resembled Kendrick.  Same color, same facial expression!

Kendrick was batting something around with his paws yesterday and I finally saw it was a twistie.  He was having a lot of fun.  Today after I got the recycle stuff ready for Tom to take out, I put the box back where I put the stuff and in a few minutes looked to see that Kendrick was sitting in the middle of the box.  I know that is typical cat action.

MaryPage, a few nights ago, we were at Pieology, a pizza place, and as we drove up to it, I noticed a place you have mentioned similar to Subway.  Tom and I said we'd try it sometime.  The name is similar to Popeye (Potpie?), but that is like Colonel Sanders KFC.  When we go there, I'll give you my opinion.  I am not a food conniseur (my spell check doesn't have the correct spelling) so it doesn't take a lot to satisfy me.

MaryAnn. Just went into Grand haven at 4:30 pm today. Looks like a Red Sunset. Great picture. Also looks like a couple of small campers on the beach.
JeanneP

Mary Ann

Jeanne, it is a bit late to see Grand Haven clearly, but it almost looks like someone has a big bonfire.  I can make out some whitecaps but not much more.  I think the park is still open so there can be campers, especially with the weekend coming up.

Patricia, you can't win!  I have Adblock on my computer and various sites recognize it.  Now some block me from finishing an article.  I guess for a price I can continue to block the ads, but I am not going to pay for that so I guess I'll miss the gist of some articles.

The rain came down hard for a while and our temp has dropped from 70 degrees to 53 degrees.  Before the night is over, we will be around 37 degrees and should get some snow Saturday.  I doubt we'll get much, but who knows.  Sunday is to be cold and cloudy.  Rumor has it that we'll have a light winter.  Since I don't drive now, I don't really care, but I know Dot does and she won't drive in bad weather.  Tom doesn't care what the weather is, however, if it is very bad, he doesn't drive unless it is necessary.

I watched Washington Week tonight where several of the panelists told of their memories of Gwein Ifill; it was a nice tribute to her.  I wonder who will take the program now.

MaryAnn, my friend in Fall River, Minnesota said it snowed today for a late first time. It was quite a storm too. Our first snow was on November twentieth instead of a more standard time for Halloween for the Arctic.

The Interior has had a high-pressure system that seems to have taken up permanent residence to migrate the last three year's weather patterns. So who knows what the year may bring as we have less than an inch of the four inches of the 20th's snow remaining

I have Adblock Plus, and I feel why use an adblocker if I am going to give in to blackmail. There is a reason why you and I have the app and I also just delete out instead of suffering through adverts.

Farrah was in a  odd mood today and wanted to be left alone. Twice I only looked at her, and she whined like a petulant child not getting her way!

MarsGal

Good morning everyone.

It is sunny this morning, which is a surprise. I was expecting cloudy with rain. Well, maybe it will show up later.

Thursday I had a minor nose surgery to take out a small growth (not a polyp) for biopsy. Yesterday, I went back to the Endodontist to finish up the root canal redo. I am not terribly pleased because while they were finishing up the procedure, my crown came out. Since it was supposed to be glued in permanently, the Dr. had drilled through it rather than removed it. Next I will have to get my regular dentist to put on a permanent filling over the root canal filling and if he can't reuse it, get a new crown. Trying to point fingers in another direction, the dental assistant said that the crown possibly didn't completely seal and that maybe why the root canal went bad. Doesn't sound right to me. Of course, if either the dentist or the Endodontist messed up somewhere, I wouldn't be able to tell which. All I know is I get to pay for the whole thing over again just when I need the bucks for house repairs.

larryhanna

Hi everyone on another beautiful Saturday morning headed up to 70 around noon and then cooling off and it will be much cooler tomorrow.  We didn't make it to COSTCO yesterday as Pat wanted to get a haircut and after we did that we went to eat a big lunch at Chick-fil-a.  We came home to rest and then decided our shopping trip could wait until this next week.  We have no plans for today other than I plan on watching college football this afternoon.

Patricia, all that turmoil regarding the spraying hasn't been kind to you.  I don't remember ever suffering with the hives but know they are most unpleasant. I also use the Adblock Plus extension and it works very well.  I wonder if Farrah is reacting to your hives?

MarsGal, interesting how it is always someone else's fault when something goes wrong.  It sounds like you didn't have a great end of the week.  I do hope today will be better for you.  I have used CareCredit that most dentists offer to pay for any major dental work as you can spread out the payments and if paid in total by the end of the promotional period there is no interest.  When I had the two crowns and a bridge done I had 30 months to pay it off with no interest.  I will make the final payment on it next month.  I have used CareCredit for quite a few years.

Mary Ann, do you do your jigsaw puzzles on the computer?  I also do two or three jigsaw puzzles on a site called Jigidig.  For years I used a program called Brainsbreaker for the jigsaw puzzles as it was more like a puzzle on a table as the pieces could be turned to find the proper fit.  However, that program won't work on my Chromebook since it is not a Google app.  If I ever go back to a regular laptop I will once again use that program but what I have now is enjoyable.  I also do two crossword puzzles on the computer each day.  I think I would be disappointed if I went to a place called Pieology and the only pies were pizza.  :)

Mary Ann

Patricia, I have just plain Adblock, not Plus, and it works fine.  Maybe if I had Plus I could finish the article they blocked, but I'm not going to pursue that.

We are having snow flurries today; I think we had a bit of snow last month, but this probably means the start of winter.  I don't think much will fall today but we may end up with snow on the ground.

Larry, the two puzzles I do are AllStar Puzzles and Jigzone.  I do them on the computer online.

Tom went to the store this morning before I got up.  I had given him a list last night.  I had a turkey breast on the list for leftovers as we will be having T-Day dinner at a restaurant with Annie and her boyfriend/landlord/employer (!).  We will go far south to this restaurant and I suspect Annie's boyfriend likes it there.  He is quite controlling, a situation we do not like, but Annie is 20 years old and knows everything!!!

I'm watching the Food Channel and they are featuring everything Thanksgiving today with all of their food people.

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn, even with Ad Block Plus, you get blocked with a notification that adverts pay for their site and they want you to remove the extension. I just close out.

Mary Ann

Patricia, I guess I'll stay with what I have as it does work well.

Mary Ann

angelface555

MaryAnn, we may be miscommunicating. While the plus app does have some advantages, what I was trying to get across was that no matter what app or extension you use, web pages will still  try to have you turn it off for their site and their adverts.

Mary Ann

Patricia, I think I did understand what you meant and I thought as long as it didn't matter what I had, I'd stick with what I have.

Mary Ann

Johann Mc

Hi, Friends!  Not sure when I last posted - can't remember if I did it after the hurricane on October 8th.  We came out amazingly well, even though we are only about 300 yds. from the beach  We are 16 feet above sea level and mostly had some limbs down in our yard.  Some of the inland towns near rivers didn't fare so well because of flooding.  It rained last weekend for the first time since the storm but apparently wasn't enough to prevent the fires in the Great Smoky Mountains of NC, TN, and Georgia.

I have intended to post all week but I am just really tired at night after dinner.  Because Windell's glaucoma and macular degeneration are gradually getting worse, I am doing all the driving during the day to get him to cardiac rehab, medical appointments, the office, and other errands. I'm getting B12 shots once a month which seem to help but got a scratchy throat about three days ago and have bronchitis this weekend.  We had planned to go over to Florence today to see his first cousin who is hospitalized with multiple myeloma and in serious condition but his cousin surely doesn't need our germs so we talked to his wife on the phone last night.

I'm smiling at the antics of Patricia's and Mary Ann's cats.  Our pets really can be both entertaining and puzzling!  My daughter and her husband had to put down their 15 year old Chesapeake retriever last weekend.  I'm sure their doberman has missed her this week.  They had to put her in a kennel yesterday so they could fly to her husband's home in Texas for Thanksgiving.  He has not been home for a couple of years. I think we are going to eat Thanksgiving dinner with our son and his family here.  He is the one that has three teenagers in college, (two at Wofford College in Spartanburg) and they will all be here for the holiday.  I usually fix one or two dishes to help with the meal.

I don't usually shop at WalMart anymore, mainly because the store is so big.  We have a Kroger about a mile from us and we get extra points on our Kroger credit card for discounts on gasoline.  We also get all of our prescriptions there now which helps to add up the points also.  Their meats are freshly packaged and if we want something special, we can ask for it.  They also have a 5% senior discount on Wednesdays so we try to do our major shopping then.

MarsGal, that's really frustrating when your dental work goes awry and ends up costing you extra!  Hope it gets straightened out OK for you.

Larry, we aren't getting to church very frequently anymore.  I went the last Sunday in October for Heritage Sunday when they have people coming in with the Scottish banners representing the different families with Scottish heritage.  They also have lunch on the grounds so I stayed to eat and brought some home for Windell.  He isn't comfortable in the service anymore because the louder organ sounds cause his hearing aids to act up.  We can watch it on the computer which we usually do but I miss being in the services with the music and prayers.  It just isn't quite the same.  I'm still coordinating the church prayer chain and sending out the prayer requests from my computer.

We both went to lunch on Monday with a group of retired teachers and when we were going to the buffet to fill our plates, two black fellows who were students at Myrtle Beach High when I was there spoke to me and we laughed about a couple of things that they remembered.  When they got ready to leave they stopped at our table and told me that they had paid for our lunch because I was always so good to them.  I was so touched - that was about 25 - 30 years ago and I think they are both in law enforcement now.  They were football players when I knew them at the high school.  Several months ago at the same restaurant I saw a black lady who hugged me and told me I had helped her and she is a counselor in Myrtle Beach now.  She told me I had done everything right!  :)  Thank goodness!  I have such good memories of my years in guidance.  I loved working with the teenagers.

Mary Ann, bless you for keeping this site going!  You are a gem!  Gotta go fix us some lunch.

Marilyne

MaryAnn - Sorry to hear that Annie has a "controlling" boy friend, who is also her boss and her landlord.  It would be good if she could break away now, and find herself another job and another place to live . . . but I know from experience with my youngest, that they never leave a bad relationship until they are good and ready.  That can sometimes be a long time.

My cat Winnie, has not been in the best of health in recent weeks. In spite of the fact that he eats a lot, he is definitely thinner.  I can tell when I pick him up.  He's had a number of "accidents" outside of the litter box, and once on the living room carpet.  Also, he doesn't seem to be sleeping very much.  I'm chalking it up to the fact that he is now over 18 years old, but if things get worse, I'll have to take him to the vet for a check up.

wjoan

just a quick note to say that Furby and I are doing fine.

Mary Ann

Johann, it is always so good to hear from you.  You certainly do keep busy.  I have the beginning of both glaucoma and dry mac d.  After seven years, I finally am going to change my regular glasses as I have trouble seeing print on the TV.  My computer glasses are relatively new and I have a bit of trouble with them, but it is hard to gauge the distance for them.  I really can't say I'm keeping this folder going, but I do try to post daily to contribute something.  Norm could do much more as the leader.

Marilyne, Annie does know her situation, however, she has no close friends so no one other than family to rely on.  Her parents' divorce really hit her hard since she was only 9 at the time.  I think one reason she stays with her friend is that she has a family life, bad as it is.  She knows we are here for her and I've told her what I would do if she decided to come back here; it wouldn't be ideal, but she would have her own space.  I have a small condo and her dad has most of the lower level and I have the first floor.  Things will work out for however long it takes!

I am not sure Kendrick is happy to go outside today because it is quite cold - 33 on the thermometer I can see and also quite windy.  Take a look at Grand Haven.

MarsGal

Marilyne, Sorry to hear that Winnie is not doing well. I hope she feels better soon.

Joan  I remember Furbies. My little sister had one when they first came out.

Larry, CareCredit sounds familiar. The Endodonist gave me the option to do something like that, but I assumed it came with an interest fee. They didn't explain it. Guess I'll have to ask if there is a next time. The other options were check with a 5% discount or credit card with a 3% discount.

About the same time the tooth started acting up, one of my light switches when kazot (or however that is spelled). Last week one of my garage windows fell apart. They are very old and the little wood bits between he panes are rotten. I was hoping to save enough to get new storm doors in the spring. I don't think I can afford new windows, though. Two of the kitchen windows, and one in another room still need replaced. They are old, non-standard size, single pane windows without any screens. Two of the windows have storm windows, but one of them is not in good shape anymore either. I guess I will have you bit the bullet and get a home equity line of credit (special at my bank for the next two months). I do hate paying interest fees and being in debt.

It is getting dark and windy now. We have a high wind warning for our area through tomorrow.

Mary Ann

MarsGal, it sounds like if you didn't have bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all!  It's bad when so much happens at the same time.  I got new hearing aids, then the washer broke down and now my dentist wants me to have a crown on one tooth.  I live in a condo so outside things are not my expense.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

MarsGal - sounds like your house is in the same dilapidated state as mine.  Windows are crumbling here too, and wallpaper peeling in one of the bathrooms.  The basement is a disaster area - I won't even attempt to try to describe it!

Sorry you've had so many dental expenses. It's an ongoing problem here as well.  Daughter has a decent job, and good health care, but no dental insurance.  She has been plagued with dental problems in recent months.  A weird thing where the roots of one tooth were resorbed, and when that happens, the tooth will soon die.  She had it pulled, and now must choose between a bridge, or an implant?  Both terribly expensive, and of course she wants the implant.  I don't know anything about them?  In either case, we would have to help her pay.

MaryAnn - My old washing machine is still running, but just barely.  A couple of the cycles don't work, and this morning I noticed water on the floor of the laundry room.  We will have to get a new one ASAP, but it will have to wait until after Thanksgiving.  Family coming from out of town, so no time to go shopping for anything but groceries!
