Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

It's listed in my PBS schedule booklet.  Hope I remember to set the recording because I'm not sure I'll be home in time for the start.

Marilyne

Callie - Daughter, granddaughter and I watched Monday night DWTS.  Tuesday night, as you said, too much GLITZ!  I dislike that type of "entertainment", so we watched other stuff until the last half hour, since we only cared about seeing who won the Mirror Ball Trophy.   Certainly no surprise that Laurie Hernandez won, but I was happy that she did.  Not only was she a good dancer, but she came across as a very sweet girl with a great personality.  I also liked the race car driver (Can't think of his name?), but figured he would come in second to Laurie.

Chia - Thanks for telling us about Anne of Green Gables.  I haven't looked yet to see if it will be playing on one of my two PBS channels.  I hope so.  That would be a nice ending to the Thanksgiving weekend.

Lindancer

I also watched both nights of DWTS and also this morning on GMA I thought this year was one of the best, with DWTS. The last 3 were very good, so were some of the rest of the dancers

Thanks Chia, I will look up the program.

Florence Henderson - Feb. 24, 1934~Nov. 24, 2016

I was surprised and saddened, to see  that Florence Henderson, died of heart failure yesterday, at the age of 82.  She had a small part on DWTS this season, and was often spotted in the audience as well.  She always looked youthful and healthy.

About ten years ago, I made a list of all the celebrities who were born in the year 1934, because that was the year I was born.  It was interesting to me that since I made that list, not a single one of them had died.  It seemed like it must have been a healthy year in which to be born.  Now, Florence, is the first one to go, and I'm sure the others will slowly follow.

The others on the 1934 list, are:
Shirley Jones, Shirley Maclaine, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Louise Fletcher, Barbara Eden, Alan Arkin, Richard Chamberlain, Russ Tamblyn, George Segal, Pat Boone, Dwayne Hickman (Dobie Gillis), Tina Louise, Frankie Valli, Gloria Steinam, Hank Aaron and Wilford Brimley.

I was also surprised to see that Florence Henderson had died.  Of course,  "heart failure" can cover quite a few particulars, so it might have been something sudden and unexpected.

Interesting list, Marilyne.  I was born in 1935.  Found a list of 48 celebrities - 17 of whom have died.  Not all of the ones listed were from the entertainment world, but among the ones who were and are still living are:  Julie Andrews, Woody Allen, Jerry Lee Lewis, Donald Sutherland, Johnny Mathis, Robert Conrad, Diahann Carroll, Bobby Vinton, and Judd Hirsch.

Did you see Derrick Hough dancing in a feature number during the Macy's parade?  Looks as if he has a "featured role" in the ensemble of the upcoming special of "Hairspray".

Chia

I too am sorry of  the death of Florence Henderson. I remember her  appearing  in many Broadway musicals and had wonderful singing and acting abilities and appeared a lot on the late night talk shows because she was so charming and always added to those particular shows with her presence.

Of course she was a success on the Brady bunch, but I for one never cared for that type of program.

Incidentally, to change the subject for a bit: I did not enjoy last night's presentation of Anne of Green Gables..Compared to the version starring Megan Fellows, Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth.it fell very short to say the least

JeanneP

I was disappointed in Anne of GG. also. Not as good as previous people I saw doing it. Specially the other little girl seemed more fitting for Anne.   In our paper it showed playing for 3 and half hours but only played for 2. I thought would show her growing up.  After that Downton Abbey came on and is running all weekend now showing all 6 seasons and Pledging every 20 min. it seems.  I won't bother watching. I saw all the originals.  Takes off a lot of shows I do watch

I remember seeing Florence Henderson, for the first time, around the holiday season in late 1960.  She was a guest on The Today Show, when Dave Garroway was the host.  At that time, she was starring in the Broadway musical "Fanny", and she was also expecting a baby, the same month I was expecting one - March, 1961. I recall being very impressed that she was still performing on stage every night!

Callie - Another name to add to your 1935 list, is Steve Lawrence.  I've always liked him a lot, and somewhere around here, I have an album called "Steve and Edie", where he and his wife Edie Gorme sing some great songs together. I've read that he has become a recluse, since Edie died a few years ago.

Chia - Yes,  Florence Henderson was in a number of musicals back in the 60's, besides "Fanny".  She replaced Julie Andrews in "The Sound of Music", for one.  I'm sure there will be lots of interesting articles about her in the next couple of days, that will list all her credits.

JeanneP and Chia -
Sounds like "Anne of Green Gables" was not the greatest?  If neither of you liked it, then I probably won't bother to watch it on demand.  I have such a large number of shows I want to watch that are either on demand, or recorded, that it's a relief to cross one off! ::)

CallieOK

Marilyne,  wonder why Steve Lawrence wasn't listed?  He and Edie were favorites of mine.

Chia and Jeanne,  I didn't like "Anne.....", either.  The only word I can think of to describe it is "contrived".  Hated those fake freckles on her face.  I almost counted to see if there were the same number in every close-up.

JeanneP

Now in her Obit. It did not showFlorence Henderson having children. Wonder what happened if pregnant in the 1960s?
JeanneP

Marilyne

Jeanne - Florence Henderson had four children, two boys and two girls. If you look her up on IMDb or Wikepedia, I think it gives names and dates.

JeanneP

Marilyne.
I just go into "Find a Grave" daily as it is on my desktop. They are good at giving names same day they die but will have more in there in a couple of days on her Obit. I would think.  Just has the name of her husband right now.
JeanneP

Marilyne

Callie - I was looking at my 1934 list this morning, and realized that quite a few are still working.  Both Shirley's - Maclaine and Jones, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith.  Alan Arkin and Russ Tamblyn, are both in upcoming TV dramas.  Florence Henderson will also be seen in a couple of TV series, and a movie, that were already completed.  I haven't heard anything about Richard Chamberlain in years, or any of the others?  I think Pat Boone may have a theater in Branson?

I have seen the promo's for "Hairspray", featuring Derrick and Julianne Hough.  They probably won't be on the next season of DWTS.

SCFSue

I think Richard Chamberlain might have died a number of years ago.  Maybe you might be able to Google him.

(George) Richard Chamberlain is still alive according to Wikipedia.  He did some sort of show in 2015 about his life, I believe.

JeanneP

Remember how we all loved in in "the Thorn Birds". I saw him on TV talk show last year. Looks like he had a lot of face work done and like all the men that have plastic surgery They did a terrible job. Lot of talk about it so doubt we see him again.

Like us,  he is not a spring chicken
any longer....    I like him and think that he is a very good man:

I remember seeing his home where he lived in Hawaii. Nice. Never saw him though.

Marilyne

Sandy - Thank you for posting the web site about Richard Chamberlain!  Wow, he still looks great, I think! Natural aging looks good on him!. Nice to see that he's participating in some worthwhile charitable projects.  I like that photo of him with Don Murray and Tab Hunter . . . three of my favorite actors from out of the past!

JeanneP

Looks like another horrible Plane wreck in Brazil. Whole sport team died. Wasn't it in Brazil where another full Soccer team lost lives in a Plane crash into a mountain.
Seem like if things going to happen it is always in the Christmas season.
Thank goodness that was not worse in Ohio University.

JeanneP...Regarding the other sport team in a crash, it was actually the Uraguayan Rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes...There were many stories about that crash where those who survived, had to eat the flesh of those who did not to ward off starvation

I was prompted to read about Richard Chamberlain and whose story was very interesting regarding his deciding to come out of the closet after so many years of hiding the fact that he was gay..

I just have to say that "The Crown" is the most beautiful thing I have seen on TV or movies.  The cast is sublime.  I think "David" was a snake in the grass even before he abdicated, no respect for family, traditions, England in general.  I was brought to tears several times when Elizabeth realized her lack of education, and at the Coronation when she was anointed.  And who could not feel the pressures, from all directions, even (especially, I thought) from Phillip.  The powers that be expected her to be only a "figure head" that could be manipulated and molded to suit their ideas and quest for power.  I think the entire cast should each be given an Emmy.  I am halfway through, (I understand there are 10 episodes in this first season) and I've finished 5.  To those who might quibble with the "history" involved, I'm sure we're getting some of it right, maybe some of it wrong, but IMHO, who cares...as entertainment, this is SUBLIME!

Marilyne

Tome - You wrote a excellent review on The Crown.  Now I'm more anxious than ever to see it! Maybe tonight we can watch the first episode, before the hockey game starts.  The game starts at 7:30, but AJ doesn't mind recording the first hour on the DVR, so he can scan through the commercials.  I'll report in tomorrow, and let you know how I liked it.

joyous

please tell me what channel  THE CROWN airs on.  I don't  see it listed.

Chia. Yes I remember the story about the crash in the 1950s .We also had one of my cities Soccer team " Manchester United" die in plane crash in Germany in the 1950s also. Thank goodness . no Cannibalism needed there.

Sat reading about the Fires in Gatlinburg. My family love going there at this time of year.  Watch the Dolly Pardon   show on TV tonight. Not the same one that was on Last year.
It was known for years. Far back as the Thornbirds that he was gay.  Still didn't make me not drool over him. Look different now as had to much done to the face.

Joyous - The Crown is only available through Netflix.

joyous, if you have a Smart TV, you can get Netflix on there if you have a Netflix account (thru the mail DVDs)

When I saw the promotional ads for "The Crown" I thought mistakenly that it was to be about the first "Queen Elizabeth" so I didn't watch it.  However when the present Queen was crowned, I was in high school and stayed up all night listening to the radio of the big event.  She has certainly done a good job as Queen and now as Queen "Mother" and "Grandmother".  I'm sorry I missed the program.

SCFSue, The Crown is on anytime you want to watch it on Netflix.
