Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Jane. I don't know how many of the Pollyanna books I read when young. I know they went with me everywhere. How I wish I had the collection now. Goodness that was a lot of years ago. I Think will try and track down the older ones. I tried to find another book, "The Girl Caruso's" I held onto that book from about 7 years old until I came to US.. Must have been written 80 years ago. One copy was for sale in Australia about 3 years ago.
JeanneP

JeanneP

Jane. I just found one on Amazon that looks like a older print. " Pollyanna Grows Up". Had it put onto my Amazon Fire. That may say what happens to her later.
JeanneP

JeanneP

Jane. You can put the Pollyanna books on your reader from Amazon. One I put on free.

jane, today was the "holiday" for Christmas since it fell on Sunday this year.  No banks open, no municipal, state, or federal offices, and no mail delivery.  I assume it'll be the same next Monday, 2 January.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

jane

Mary...ah...of course!  I'll try he bank today, once the fog lifts...or the "marine layer" as they call it in California.  :2funny:

Jeanne....I believe it's Sue who loved the Pollyanna books.

Marilyn...are you back home safe?

Warm and foggy here and this morning.

Jane

Marilyn

We had beautiful weather all the way to, there, and from, Our destination. It was very cold but the sun shone, no clouds and blue sky. I will write more later, time for my Chiro appt then grocery shopping, the cats need wet food and we have none.

GinnyAnn

We are having a grey day. The temp will probably drop as the day goes on.

Just saw that Carrie Fisher died.  :'(

JeanneP

Sun out today. cold but nice. I am off to see a Movie.  I like the 1pm show as not many people. Can keep far away. Lots of flu in this town

Yes Jane. Sue was the one about Pollyanna.  She will read it on here.

Oh! so
rry to hear about Carrie Fisher Passing. She was on her way back from UK.
JeanneP

jane

GinnyAnn...sorry for the dreary day.

Jeanne...good idea to avoid people who are coughing.

Marilyn...hurrah for a good trip.

There is NO breeze here, which is unusual and so the fog is hanging on, but it's unbelievably warm...so we did a longer walk than we've done yet this morning...and then ran into golfing friends just arriving with son and granddaughter.

Now we're rested up, had a bite of lunch and off for groceries and a "look around" at a couple shops in Port Isabel.

jane

SCFSue

Hi Buddies.  I poked around this morning after a 10:30 get-up-out of bed.  I was still at my kitchen table when Tim arrived.  He wanted to put my bed back together as it should be.  He'd taken the box spring out and lowered the mattress onto a piece of plywood as the bed is high with box spring and mattress and he was afraid I'd fall again.  Now I need to find the bed skirt which had been removed and probably washed.  I don't see it in the linen closet.

It looked like rain here this morning by the time I was ready to walk, but hasn't rained all day.  Just a false alarm.  We really need a good rain here, though.  Alabama has been in a drought all summer--and I'm sure I've probably mentioned about the water restrictions.  Thank goodness the few times it has rained, my water barrel has filled up.  I have a pipe that runs the rain off the roof into the water barrel and I'm able to water my house plants and the smallest flower bed I have with pansies in bloom.

Jane, I've been meaning to ask how far you are from Corpus Christi?  Bob completed his flight training there after Pensacola and someplace near Nashville, Tennessee, where we lived for about 6 weeks for his jet training.  When we were in Corpus Christi , we would drive down to the beach on Sunday.  Bill slept in his porta-bed while Bob fished and I read a book.  Bill was a week old when Bob picked us up at the Pensacola Naval Hospital and we drove to Nashville after spending the night in Montgomery with his parents which was on our way.

Yesterday I'd read that Carrie Fisher had an attack while on a plane returning from Europe (maybe France?).  I was sorry to hear that she died in Los Angeles.

GinnyAnn, I hope you got some sunshine later in the day.  Gray days are not fun, especially when you're still grieving.  Are you getting out to lunch with your lunch buddy?  Big hugs to you today!

Mary, we didn't have mail yesterday either.  The P.O. employees always get Christmas off but not always on THE DAY.  When my grandmother was the assistant postmaster in our 15,000 residential town, she always went to the P.O. to help the mail carriers sort their mail--and sometimes on Christmas morning as she hated for them to have to work on Christmas.  I was surprised on Saturday when we got mail.  They must have preferred having Monday off.

Jeanne, how many Pollyanna books did Amazon have available?  Do you think it was the whole series?  I thought the program on TV followed the first book very well.

Marilyn, woo hoo on having good driving weather.  Did you take Freckles with you?  I'm glad you had a nice time.

I need to write some thank you notes and hope to finish before news time.  I hope everyone has a good rest of the day.

Hi to Darlene and Joy and Sharon and whoever else is busy and missing today.
Sue

jane

Sue...it's 185 miles, give or take from CC to SPI.

There's still no breeze today and so the "marine layer" is hanging around the beach.

We got our groceries and they're put away and we are both tired!

jane

Marilyn

Sue indeed we did take freckles with us. She looked so cute in her winter coat with her service dog vest over it.
Savannah now word for Ulta, http://www.ulta.com/ and gave me a suede Cucci  makeup bag full of  all kinds of things  2 Versaci colognes, Mura Face stuff, etc.  Sarah gave me a dragonfly so beautiful, it has an alligator clip on the back so I can pin it almost anywhere.

We had lots of good food, champagne, wine, Lacey cookies I ate 4 slices of cheesecake. Gilbert ;put on Pandora radio and we listened to Reggae Christmas music. that was different but sounded great.

I haven't weighed myself yet but will do that tomorrow to see if I gained and how  much or not. My Medicare Advantage insurance that I signed up for  pays for the Silver and Fit program, so I will be going back to the gym next month. I am looking forward to that. I have my anual eye exam this week, I wonder how the cataract and Macular degeneration is doing. mI didn't write down my appt, so I will call tomorrow i think it is the 30th.

jane

Foggy morning greetings, Dear Buddies.

Absolutely no plans for today besides reading and knitting and reading and knitting.  Stressful? NOT! :2funny:

I hope your day is peaceful and relaxed as well.

jane

maryz

Glad you had such a good trip, Marilyn.

And that things are going well in Texas, jane.

Cool and sunshine-y today in Chattanooga.  I'm just back from PT and that my schedule for the day.  I finished Sue's sweater last night (except for blocking and buttons - and I'm going to "let" her take care of that part).  And, I've started on the next project - a coat sweater out of some nice cotton blend yarn - also for Sue.  I don't make these decisions, they pick out what they want - just keeping me busy.  LOL

Our Lady Mocs played Notre Dame last night - or at least they sort of showed up - they lost by 21 points.  We've played four of the top 10 teams so far, so have gotten some good experience.

Anybody got any New Year's Eve plans?  I don't.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

SCFSue

Jane, after seeing your mileage quote, I guess there must be a beach nearer to Corpus Christ--I just thought we went to Padre Island.  1958/59 is quite some time ago.

Mary, I'm sorry to hear that the Lady Mocs lost to Notre Dame last night.  And getting good experience is always a good lesson.  I'm going to the Arena at 5:00 for our Lady Tigers last home game of the season.  It is Jacksonville--which I thought might be Jacksonville State U., here in Alabama, but Tim thinks it is Jacksonville, FL.  I guess I'll find out when I get there.

Marilyn, it sounds as if your trip was really nice.  It's great that Freckles is a good traveler.  I don't think my Medicare program pays for exercise at a gym, but I'm going to inquire soon.  I'll still have the problem of getting there, though.  I think Bonney goes to a gym connected with the hospital, so maybe she'll know.

It's damp here today and although the temperature is not much lower than 65, it seems colder than that.

My plans for the rest of the afternoon are to get on my bed with my afghan and read.  My ride to the game will be here about 5:00.  The game starts at 6:00.

Have a nice day, Buddies.
Sue

Hi everyone..nice and warm here last 3 days...but a windy cold front on the way...went to the library for some books..will try to walk later.Heres wishing everyone a happy healthy new year..I have no plans except watching TV..doubt I will be awake at midnight...Darlene

Sue, John had a Blue Cross supplement to Medicare which paid for his Y membership and Silver Sneakers.  Mine doesn't, but I didn't have to pay for a family membership for him to go to the Y.  I know the supplements vary by state, so yours might be different, but it's worth asking your insurance carrier about.

Hi Darlene, glad to see you checking in.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

jane

Sue...you and Bob may have gone to North Padre Island aka Mustang Island.  It's there at CC.  We were there one year and it's a big area for bird watching and fishing.  Padre Island was once one island, but "they" made a cut near Port Mansfield, so it's not one anymore.  To further confuse things, a main street in CC is called SPID...South Padre Island Drive...even though it's not on SPI! Does Port Aransas sound familiar?  http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/mustang-island

We did get a walk in and Ray later went down to the pool...the OUTSIDE one, but he said it was cold, so he went to the indoor one for a bit.   Lots of people here this week.

Gulf shrimp on the menu for tonight.

Jane

SCFSue

Mary, my Medicare supplement is Tri-Care for Life which Bob paid into starting in the '70s when the military thought it was a good idea.  I don't know how many military retirees use it, but I do and very seldom have to pay anything back to Medicare, including all the time I was in 3 different hospitals.  I will check online to see if they have Silver Sneakers or another program I can use at one of the gyms.  Of course it will depend on getting a ride to the gym!

Jane, I guess it was Padre Island where we went on Bob's days off the flight line.  Now that you mention it, it's ringing a bell.  We enjoyed getting away from student housing at Corpus Christi.  Thanks for the heads up.  And Yum, Gulf shrimp sounds wonderful!

Our Lady Tigers won tonight's game by almost 20 points.  We were playing Jacksonville--and I think it was the one in Florida near my sister Anne.  So far, our Ladies are doing pretty well.  Conference play starts after January first.

Sleep well, Buddies.
Sue

GinnyAnn

Seeing the Random Image for tea time reminds me of the tea towels my friend gave me.  We have known each other since 1989.

Sue I know I have known you for many years.   :)  :hugs: I have known many of the Buddies for many years.

Today we are having a partly sunny day.

SharonE

Hi Gals. No real news here. Did grocery shopping. Also had to go to Ms Frances' to find out why her phone wasn't working. She'd left if off the hook again.  She really needs someone to be there with her.

Hi Ginny. Yes, it seems like most of us have known each other for a really long time. My BC was in 2001 and I had known Jane before that and met most of the rest of you shortly afterwards.  Time does fly.

We actually had a thunder storm and some rain last night although I don't know how much because my rain gauge is cracked and didn't collect any rain.  I need to see if they have replacements for it.

Sue, glad your gals won.  IU men lost last night :(

Jane, your gulf shrimp sounds wonderful.  How will you fix it?  Glad your weather is nice.  We have had sun all afternoon but lots of wind.

Mary, you are being very good with your PT and pool. I wish I were more motivated.  How neat that the girls are keeping you busy with knitting projects, assuming of course, that you enjoy them.  I'm just not into handwork.

Marilyn, you were very lucky with your weather. I'm so glad you had a safe trip and a good Christmas.  Neat that Savannah gifted you with such nice cosmetics.

Darlene, ours will be a very quiet NYE also, although we will watch the ball drop and have some snacks.  I'm going to use one of the salmon pieces that Melanie sent us to make a salmon spread. The recipe was in the pkg.

Hi to any I've missed.  The year is winding down.  We had a Christmas card returned from our former neighbors in HH. Had a return address in CA, so I'm wondering if the wife passed on. Her healthy was very poor.  He had a son in CA.  So sad.  As we grow older, we lose more and more of our past friends.  And also so many celebrities this year. I was so sorry to hear about Debbie Reynolds' dying the day after her daughter.  I loved her movies in the 50's.

Take care.  Sharon

Marilyn

Tomorrow morning I go to the eye doctor. eyes will be dilated so he can check the macular degeneration  and my cataract. Keith will be driving me, thank goodness  the off is isn't too far frrom here and he only has to get on a busy street for not even half a block, the rest is  empty side street at least I hope they are empty.  He got a letter from DMV he has 60 to take the drivers tests or his license will be suspended.

JeanneP

He had better take the test. Once they suspend a license it is hard getting it back after a certain age.

Hope your Eye test goes well.  I had my prescription changed a little.  I had that change the new glasses twice and still not happy with the.  Have a Dr. Appt on Feb. 3rd so will have him check them out.
JeanneP

jane

The fog lifted with the breezes back and it's in the 60s now.  Ray and Jim went over to Brownsville to see if he winds were less there and get in 9 holes.  They aren't back, so it must be ok inland.

We have a corned beef brisket in the crockpot for tonight.

I need to get a walk in.  I've been out to the grocery store, to Beall's, and WalMart and I'm ready to just relax and walk a bit.

jane

SharonE

The corned beef sounds wonderful, Jane. I often fix that for NY Day, but decided not to this year because of calories and salt.  How was your shrimp?

Jeanne, I hope you can get your glasses adjusted to help you.

Marilyn, I hope you can find out what is bothering your vision and get new glasses too.  I also hope Keith can manage to drive you home safely. If he is that bad of a driver, maybe he should just let his license expire.

I have done very little today, even dozed here in front of the computer for a while. I don't know why. I slept well last night.

Have a nice rest of the day.  Hi to everyone who posts.  Sharon

jane

Shrimp was good...sauteed it.

I tried to walk but my joints weren't happy, so I quit and came back.  I didn't get to sleep until 2:00 am. I'd goofed and had a diet coke for supper at 6:15 and it wasn't caffeine free.  That caffeine really gets to me anymore.

I've made out a check for 2nd half prop taxes at home to mail next week, paid Jan's rent here, and caught up on my Quicken bookkeeping and balanced the old checkbook.  So...all set for the New Year!

jane

SCFSue

Hi Buddies.  I have been watching sports since my lunch time, Georgia VS ? can't remember, but think Georgia won and now watching basketball:  WVU and Oklahoma State, playing in Oklahoma.  WVU is ahead at the half.

I also made some treats from a recipe in the cooking forum here.  A square pretzel on the bottom, caramel on top with a pecan on top of the caramel.  Put in a 250* oven for 3 minutes.  I put some in a baggy for Tim and Kris, but have eaten most of mine!  I'm not very good at waiting for a treat.

Jane, I'm sorry about your tough night.  Wakefulness after bedtime is the pits.  You've been busy with paperwork today.  My property taxes have been reduced because of my age--I couldn't believe it!  They were already very low.  Alabama has a very poor tax system--I don't know why the state isn't in constant bankruptcy.  Corn beef brisket sounds yummy.

Sharon, some days are just meant to be slug days.  I hope it doesn't mean you're catching a cold.  Maybe you just needed to catch up on your sleep.

Jeanne, I had to take an eye test when I renewed my license tag in August.  It was just covering each eye and calling out a line of letters and numbers.  I haven't had any problem with that test since I had cataracts removed about 5 or 6 years ago.  I think this time was because of my age.  I was 80 in March.

Marilyn, I hope that your eye test goes well.  How long have you been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration?  After my cataract surgery (one eye one week and the other the next which is not my doctor's usual practice, but he was taking his family on a trip to Europe and wanted to get it over with before he left).

GinnyAnn, you and Jane were the first of the Buddies I met online.  All 3 of us were at Third Age at the time.  I think Jane is the one who invited us to Senior Net where Bosom Buddies was then.

I hope you're all enjoying the day.  It's dark and dreary and I wish it would rain this evening, but probably won't.  I did get a chilly walk in this morning.

My eye test was almost the same as last year. The MDs the dry kind but the Dr that could change over night. I go back in 6 months to check that and the cataract that is getting close enough for surgery. I will just keep using the readers until then.It was a  scary ride to and from the Clinic. Keith drove about 10-15 MPH and sometimes too close to the curb.  Coming home he pulled out of the parking lot and over shot the corner to turn had to go  up to the next street. He was going to turn if he had we would have ended up in a vacant lot over the sidewalk and curb. I don't think he can pass a drivers test because he has to ask me which way to go and says I have to help him drive. He sure can't be askiing the testing person those questions.

maryz

Marilyn, that was a scary ride.  If/When you have your cataract surgery, you'll need to find another driver to get you home.  8^)

Sue, I renewed my license when I turned 80 last March, and I was surprised when I didn't have to take some sort of test.  I did it online, and it was renewed for TEN years.  I'm sure I won't be driving that long, but.....  BTW, Georgia did beat TCU.  Tennessee was playing Nebraska and was ahead in the fourth quarter (last I heard - I'm not watching).

jane, I never get tired of just plain boiled shrimp - peel and eat.  Yum!

I'd been on the old SeniorNet from about 1998, but didn't come in to BB until 2005 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  And then, of course, moved to S&F.

All the news programs are showing lists/photos of notables who have died during the year.  There surely were a lot of good folks lost in 2016.  I had my last PT appointment of the year.  This afternoon, I played duplicate - we came in last again.  Sigh.....

Hi to Sharon, Ginny Ann, Darlene, Candy, Joy, Molly, Sandy - whoever else is looking in.

It's cold and dreary here this morning.  I didn't get out of bed until 8:30 and have just been putzing around.  I do have a load of wash in the washer and have walked the 3 blocks to the corner and back.  It's almost time to put the laundry into the dryer.

Mary, I think I have to renew my license in 4 years, but expect they will send me a notice.  I've not been driving at all since my fall--and the neurologist told me about a month ago that I probably won't be able to drive again for quite some time.  Not being able to drive is the pits!  Thank goodness for my membership in Village Friends.  I can call them when I need a ride to Kroger, other shopping, hair cut, etc.  What a help that is.

Marilyn, I agree with Mary about getting another driver after your cataract surgery.  I hope you get the good results I did from my cataract surgery.  My vision is better than it ever was--I only need to wear glasses when driving at night in an unfamiliar area where I have to read signs in small print.

I bought a cheap bottle of champagne to open near midnight.  Last year I invited 3 of my bridge friends over for pizza and beer if they liked beer with a glass of champagne at the witching hour.  I'm just going to drink my glass by myself this evening.

Enjoy the games today.  I'm pulling for Washington, but I'm sure Alabama will win.  Auburn doesn't play until Monday at 7:30 in the Sugar Bowl.

Enjoy your day, Buddies.
Sue
