Jeanne Lee, I love Grandfather clocks, especially for their deep gongs.  The old family clocks struck on the hour, both were high pitched, one moreso than the other.  I wound them every  day but eventually, they got tired and no longer worked.  I think the cast iron clock from my grandmother's parent's family is well over 150 years old and the one from my maternal grandparents' home is probably 130 years old.  I'm going by the birth date of my paternal grandmother and the wedding date of my maternal grandparents.  They rest on a cabinet in my dining area even if they don't work.

Gloria, that is remarkable about your grandmother's clock stopping at her death.  As you said - just like the song.

Marilyne, I doubt I've ever seen a post from Facebook so I didn't know how things get posted.

Callie, I am not on Facebook but I would hate to read posts over and over again.  It seems to me that someone on SN or S&F used to do that.  I don't remember who, but it has not been happening of late, so the person either quit doing it or left.

Tom went to lunch with two friends and brought back a Subway 6" length and I've finished it.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Callie - I agree on the "meme's"!  All the inspirational, religious, funny, sad, cute animals, etc., sayings, get extremely tiresome!  I never share them, but many of my friends and family members bombard me with them on a regular basis. ::)  The only things I ever share, are photos that pertain to the groups that I belong to, and then only within my groups. I do enjoy my FB groups, which are related to personal interests like my home town and the schools I attended, antique collections that I enjoy, Mid-Century Modern, Craftsman bungalows, etc.

CallieOK

Marilyne, is THAT what a "meme" is?    I'd always wondered - sounds like a nickname for a grandmother to me!!  (I know - bit of a snarky attitude.  Sorry.  ;D )

I enjoy keeping up with what my adult grandchildren are doing (we communicate via Messenger and/or Texting),  my hometown alumni association/museum/"general news", where I live now and a couple of places we lived "back in the day".

Rain is moving in and doesn't seem to have storms connected.  Think I'll take a nap.

Mary Ann

Marilyne and Callie, the forwards I get via e-mail that irritate me the most start out "this is hilarious; you'll ROTFL" or words to that effect.  I can go through the whole thing without cracking a smile.  Once in a great while I will laugh at something, even out loud, but most of the time they are very "unfunny" to me.

I seldom forward anything to others.

Mary Ann

wjoan

I have my email set so that ALL Forwards  go to SPAM.

CallieOK

Joan, I would love to have that option!  What e-mail program do you have?

Mary Ann

The forwards I get are from friends and are not spam.  It is just there are too many at times.  I received six of them recently, one after another, from the same person.  I finally asked her to consider if I really would be interested in a particular site and, if so, send it to me, but don't include me with all of her other friends.  The forwards slowed down.  Dot sends me videos of her great-grandsons and I like to get those.  I'm not related to the boys, in fact, I've only seen one of them in three or four years, but they are cute and their actions are cute.

Some of my e-mails do go directly to Spam and they are ones that probably don't match any of my contacts.  I look to see what I have in Spam but don't read them.  Occasionally, something is put in Spam that is not Spam.

I have never used Face Book and never will--when it first started 2 of my daughters' in-law were on Face Book and had a bit of a disagreement which has never really been solved--and it hurts me that they are still miffed about it.  I think many who use Facebook just don't think before they write!

Sue (SCF)

That is not the fault of Facebook however.

Hi everyone.  We have another beautiful day and will get into the low to mid-80's this afternoon with no chance of rain.  I don't intend to go anywhere today.  Yesterday left me exhausted.  We did go and have Chinese last evening for dinner but doubt we go back to the restaurant.

Marilyne, I very seldom post on Facebook but do get a few notifications and usually check them out.  I always find your postings of interest as I do all of the others regardless of length.

Mary Ann, it is nice you have a hair stylist in reserve since your regular one is retiring.

Chia

Marilyne..I am writing about my Audobon Society Bird Clock..Among their bird selection is an owl and woodpecker whose sounds are familiar to me. So when having to reset the clock twice a year, I know I am on the right bird of that particular hour..In fact, this last time I had to reset the clock, the birds did not sing and I just discovered today from my maintenance person that I had one of the batteries  in wrong and when he righted it, off the bird started to chirp...Oh happy day! I have bought several Audobon clocks from Ebay and have been very satisfied...
Along with my bird clock, I have the company of a westminster chime clock that bongs every 15 minutes and also a cuckoo clock that chirp twice an hour...Sometimes, through time, all the  3 clocks do their thing and I am  very happy for the sound...I live alone and it is just perfect for me...

FlaJean

Although I seldom post and never share on Facebook, it keeps me in touch with the photos of my grandchildren and great grands.  Our family is from east to west and even Canada so it is easy to keep up with the relatives.  We also have a large family group page where different members post photos and occasional notes.

I have a gift waiting for me on Amazon and I think I will order one of the bird clocks.  Would love to hear the birds chirping.

Marilyne

Chia - Thanks for the information on the Audobon Bird Clock. I've looked up a number of clocks online, and they all look similar, except that it looks like there is a different selection of birds on every clock? Two birds that I would especially like to have on my clock, are the mourning dove, and the mockingbird.  I'll take a look at the Audobon Society, and see if they list a selection of birds on their clocks.

Nice to see you posting here.  I hope you return and join in  the conversations. :)

Mary Ann

Chia, I felt the same way about my strike clocks when they went off together, especially at noon.  The two clocks had different sounds and I loved it when they struck together.

Jean, I think a lot of seniors are on Facebook for the reason you are on it - to keep up with family, especially grandkids.  I know that is why Norm was on it.  When Facebook was new I would get many requests to be someone's "friend" and many of the requests were from people I had never heard of.  I've never joined, but I'm happy to be part of S&F; that's about all I can handle.  I am shocked when I realize I've made almost 1700 posts.

Marilyne, my bird clock has the mourning dove and it might also have a mockingbird.  I've been noticing sounds coming from the clock but I haven't been near the clock and cat to see his reaction.  I know he'll tire of it soon, if he hasn't already.

Tom did the grocery shopping this morning so we had chicken, potato salad and seven-layer salad for lunch.  He won't be here at suppertime, so I'll find something for me to eat.

The day has continued to be nice and we are in the low 60s.  I am watching the golf channel, but I may take time out to nap.

Mary Ann

SCFSue

WJoan, you are right about Facebook.  I just have always disliked airing grievances in public and it's none of my business what people want to say there.  So I just avoid it.

Sue

CFSue,  you can also delete those that you do not wish to see.  I do.  I am not into reading any of the political or religious posts so just delete them.  Works for me.

larryhanna

Hi everyone.  Today starts with another bright and sunny morning.  However, the forecast is for cloudy this afternoon but getting up to around 84 degrees.  Later this morning I plan on going to the Masonic Lodge as this is their annual BBQ Dinner to raise money for their charity work.  My friend who told me about the event said one dinner should be enough for Pat and I to share.  So I will get one meal and we will have it for our evening meal. Nothing else on my schedule for today.

Yesterday was basically another lost day as I spent most of it just laying down resting and listening to music.  I took a diuretic pill this morning as my exhaustion could relate to the Congestive Heart Failure and fluid may be accumulating around my heart.  I hope this helps as want to feel up to attending Church tomorrow.   Our choir did their Easter music last evening as a part of the Good Friday service but I just wasn't up to attending.

Chia, I am going to have to consider an Audobon Society Bird Clock for my wife as she has never had a bird clock and loves to watch and listen to the birds. I think we have a good place to put the clock on a column at the end of our kitchen island.

FlaJean, I recently redeemed a $10 gift card from Amazon using my Coke points I have been saving up for a long time.  Using that for the bird clock would give me pleasure.

Marilyne, it looks like we may cause a spike in bird clock sales based on our discussion here.  :)

Mary Ann, I don't accept many friend requests not because I don't consider them friends but just don't want to spend much time on Facebook.  I also wonder if Facebook isn't generating these requests rather than the individual person.  I haven't watched any of this weeks golf tournament from Myrtle Beach, SC yet but probably will this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon.

Joan, I have to admit I don't really understand how to use Facebook but know as much about it as I care to know.

Sandy

Good Sunny morning here on the rocky coast of Maine...

Ah......    It feels sooooo  good.

I love Facebook.     Because I use it,  I have come across many old time friends that I had through the years...

I am very much in control of who I choose to be friends with and how I choose to use Facebook.    I also like to use Twitter and just recently have gotten more involved with that.   My twitter and Facebook accounts are now connected,  so when I "ReTweet" something that I read,  it also goes out on my Facebook Account..

I chose this because it fits how I like to use Twitter and Facebook.      I just caught up with an old friend of mine that I haven't been in touch with for 35 years...  so through Facebook and Twitter we will be staying in touch...   or at least knowing what is going on in our thoughts and keeping track on how we feel about things. (Regarding our World View) ....

We don't have to agree on everything or anything for that matter.    But as long as we don't attack one another for our differences,  we can maintain a connection  that other wise would have remained lost.

I have found that for me,  connecting with friends and acquaintances through social media allows me to feel very connected to my life both past and present.

I am only saying this because it is good to get both sides of  our present day technical advances,  and how they can be utilized to enhance lives like mine,  who live alone
(by choice) but want to remain connected to what I feel is relevant in my life.

I hope that everyone has a great day ...
while I am contemplating going out and soaking up
some sun shine.      (For me that means spending about 10 minutes in the Sun..   That is about all the direct Sunshine that I can handle..)

Sandy

Larry, my problem with Facebook friends was that the requests came on my usual e-mail from people I did not know.  Some came from family, and I might have “friended” them, but I never signed on to facebook so it didn’t matter.

Sandy, if you’re on Twitter, you perhaps could have “tweeted” the president.

I have looked in on Classmates, but never joined.  Evidently, by looking in, your name registers because I hear from former classmates and classmates of Norm’s.  I get messages that so-and-so has checked in on me and if I want to know more, I have to join.  It sounds like fun, but I’m not going to join.

I watched the birth of the giraffe this morning.  I happened to be on the Detroit Free Press site and a heading said that April was about to give birth.  I watched longer than I intended but with two hooves sticking out, it was obvious that something was going to happen.  I watched until the baby could stand up.

Our day is starting out like Larry's/  Bright and sunny.

Larry I think Pat would love a bird clock.  I know I love mine.  used to feed the birds back when I could and loved to watch them interact.  Miss that but at least I can hear them once every  hour.

Marilyne

Mary Ann - I forgot all about the birth of the baby giraffe!  I'm hoping it will be rerun on YouTube or another site, as I would really like to see it.

I joined Classmates, many years ago, when it was just getting started.  I did connect with one friend from the old neighborhood where we grew up.  It was such fun reminiscing with him about growing up on that street together in the 1940's . . . the games we played, the trees we climbed, the neighbors we remembered, etc.  We emailed back and forth for a year or more, but unfortunately he passed away suddenly in 2005.  Since then, I haven't connected with anyone from my schools or neighborhood.  I've found that most people my age don't do the computer at all!  My brother is three years younger, and he has never even sent an email!

FlaJean

Well, I ordered my bird singing clock and it should arrive about Apr 21st.  Will let you know how I like it. 😀

We had several bird feeders and lots of birds when we lived in Ocala.  Unfortunately, when our daughter visited with her two little dogs they would eat the fallen bird seed and have upset tummies. Now that we live just a few blocks away from our daughter, husband and two little dogs, we decided to forego any bird feeders.  We miss the birds but enjoy lots of family visits much more than birds.  Looking forward to the bird singing clock.

Mary Ann

I had trouble getting the bird sounds when I put in the new batteries but now I hear a bird noise occasionally, but not every hour.  Kendrick was lying in front of the clock a few minutes ago and I told him to stay there until 5 o'clock, but he moved to his bed, which isn't far away.  It is nearly five, so I'm going in to the other room to see if there is any reaction.
******************
Both the chime clock and the bird clock went "off" at 5 pm but the bird chirp was so low I doubt the cat even heard it.

Jean, I hope you enjoy the bird clock.  I know they come with different bird songs.

Marilyne, I was lucky with the giraffe because the Free Press had a headline that the giraffe was ready to pop.  I clicked on the link and I had to watch it for over an hour, but all of a sudden the sack came out and mama took care of it immediately.  It took nearly a half hour before the baby got on its feet.  According to a news item on my computer it will be a few days before they know the sex.

When Tom comes upstairs we are going to a farm market.  I've said for some time that we do not have a produce market, but this one has been there and I was not aware of it.  Last fall someone lit the straw the man had on the outside of his building and it had to be rebuilt.  They just reopened this week.  There also was a lot of smoke damage to a used clothing store and I am not sure that is open yet.  The vandals have not been caught.

Mary Ann

Sasha

Hey, there, all. I'm picturing MaryAnn's bird clock going off with Kendrick dangling by his claws from the minute hand.

We have 7 "unadoptables" now, ages 15 down to 2 ... or is it 3? My cat database says Java will be 3 in July. MarilynE, I'll be glad to yammer on about them if you're interested.

X to all, Sasha

Mary Ann

It's good to hear from you, Sasha.  That's a lot of cats to have around.  Kendrick will be 4 in July.

The bird sounds are so weak that I doubt Kendrick knows what they are.  And they sound at the same time as the chime clock and that clock overpowers the bird sounds.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Hi Sasha - Yes, I'm interested!  I'd like to hear what's happening at your cat haven.  Was it named, "A Place in the Sun", or something similar?   I still have Winnie, who will be 19 years old this coming August!  He is now very thin and boney, and his eyesight is poor, but he has a good appetite and a great disposition, so I'm thankful for that.

junee

Well folks, all this talk about bird clocks and I have resisted getting one as think it is too
late .Think the bird sounds would be different in this part of the world but I have to confess I am a bird lover and have a routine of Feed the birds first thing in the morning.  Lots of bush nearby so we are fortunate to have so many come in to visit on my veranda.
Still keep thinking about a bird clock specially hearing how you all enjoy yours.

larryhanna

Hi everyone.  We have a another nice day for Easter.  We will miss the Easter service today as just don't feel up to getting out.  I hate to miss going as it is one of the few days we see our church generally full.

Yesterday I did drive down to the Masonic Lodge and purchase two of their BBQ dinners.  There was so much food that one of the meals feed both Pat and I last night with some BBQ and hash with rice left over.  We will have the other dinner for our main meal today.  The food was delicious and they sure had a big turnout with cars everywhere.  Fortunately, I was able to park very close to the line for the take out meals.

I did watch the golf yesterday afternoon and will do so again today.  It is a very tight match with a number of players in contention.  One of the players tee shot ended up on the bank of a water hazard.  When he got to the ball there was an alligator at the every edge of the water close to his ball.  Play was delayed until the caddy took a golf club and nudged to animal and it went under and out away from the bank.

I read this a little while ago and found it quite interesting so wanted to share it as it fits with the Easter season:

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection?
The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded and was placed at the head of that stony coffin.

Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!'

Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. The other disciple out ran Peter and got there first. He stopped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in.

Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the side.

Was that important? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes! In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day.

The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every  Jewish boy knew this tradition.

When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it. The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table until the master was finished...

Now if the master was done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers and his mouth and clean his beard, and would then wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table.

The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days the wadded napkin meant,  "I'm finished..."

But if the master got up from the table and folded his napkin and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because....the folded napkin meant "I'm coming back!"  AND  SO  HE  SHALL

Sandy, good explanation of your use of Facebook and Twitter.  I know many people really enjoy both and use them appropriately.  I am not opposed to them and have accounts for both but don't use them very much.  Nice that you are able to enjoy the sun.

Mary Ann, I seem to remember that classmate site from many years ago.  We only had 6 member in our class so don't think it would be worth the money to join. I am in contact with two or three of them anyway. I saw the giraffe birth on the news last night.
I don't think cats ever miss a sound (if they want to hear it) so bet Kendrick heard the bird sound.

Joan, Pat is anxiously awaiting the return of the hummingbirds and put out her feeder much too early this year.

Marilyne, thanks for posting your picture as it is nice to have a face to associate with a name in discussions.   In this day and age not using a computer can be a big problem and will become more so as the years progress.

FlaJean, I looked at the bird clocks last evening and put one in my shopping cart and need to complete the order.  Do you still live in Florida?

Sasha, you must really love cats.  We had one and that was plenty.  I did grow up with cats on the farm but they were not house cats and served a good purpose on the farm.  Tell us more about them.

Junee, we hear many birds chirping outside of our house.  I thought we were going to have some new baby birds in the nest in the upper corner of a column on our front porch but something must have gotten the eggs as I haven't seen any life there for a week or longer.  The mother bird was sitting on the eggs for several days.

Sandy

Good Morning Everyone!

It is another beautiful day here on this Easter Sunday on the rocky coast of Maine..

I went down this morning to do some laundry and
the place was packed...   I thought that I would be the only one there..   Oh well,  wrong again.

All is well here
