Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

General Computer Q & A

I've been amazed, however, at the response to answering their "satisfaction surveys" with low ratings and explaining why.  Twice in the last month I've gotten phone calls from either the Service Manager (in the case of a car servicing problem) or an American English speaking Supervisor (with my DSL internet/phone company.

So, maybe they do look at those things!!

jane

JeanneP

Jane Now I have gotten one in the Philippines in the past month. She was so good. Did better than the Service man who had been out.  Not often does that happen.
Now it is good to unhook the Modem and take the connection out of the Electric about one a month. Seems to solve a lot of problems. My desktop is getting old now. Needs replacing but I don't do a lot on it anymore.
JeanneP

jane

Yes, it does help and to completely shut down the computer...which I do nightly since we have so many thunder storms with lightning.  The Supervisor said once a week, not once a month, so that's what I shall do.

As I said, so far all my "computer problems" have actually been telephone/internet problems that the company has had outside the house...but it's easier to say it's on my end, I guess.

Once the local ISP repairman who called me said there were 50,000 people in Iowa without service because a farmer had cut the fiber cable during plowing or whatever.  The Colorado guy I'd spoken to about the outage I had said "all is fine there...it must be your computer."  Uh...NO! How do the support centers not know that there's a huge outage out here in the hinderlands?

Hi Buddies.  It's now 12:40 and I've had lunch and cleaned up the kitchen.  Tim dropped by earlier to bring me a roll of stamps and we made plans for his birthday lunch with Kris on Thursday.  His birthday is the 29th.  And Bill's is on August 29th.  Tim will be 57 and Bill 59 this year.

I pruned my butterfly bush this morning and cut dead blooms off my marigolds.  I watered the front flower bed and the small veggie garden in the back with water from my rain barrel.  We've been lucky this summer with some afternoon rainfalls.  It's usually pretty dry here June through September.  I have some blooms on my bush beans, but so far no beans and the tomato plants don't look as if they are ever going to produce a tomato!

I'm planning a quiet afternoon with a book on my bed.  And who knows, I just might catch 40 winks!

Have a good day, Buddies.

JeanneP

Well it has cooled down a little.  Still 85 deg. Going down to 65 at night. I had turned the A/C off and opened window but now got it back on.

Sue. A book and a little nap may be my thing.  I did sleep good last night though. Window opened helps.

Jane. I have always turned my desktop down at night. IPad goes off on its own when close pad. But I did shut it down this morning and let it come up again. I need to look at Tablets. Not put them on for awhile.  I just can't get into reading books on any of them. Have some good ones on all three. Set for life now I think. Trying not to download anymore.  I know some people have hundreds on theirs.
JeanneP

jane

I've got over a thousand on mine. It's the only way I read anymore.  Hardcover books are too hard to hold and paperbacks seem "icky" to me now. The paper is such poor quality anymore, it seems.  It's just easier to read on my IPAD where I can adjust the contrast and the print size.

JeanneP

I am going to get trying on the Ipad.  Specially if the Library keep putting out these notices saying they are closing in order to again bring the spray people in again because of find bugs in the books.. Twice now in 6 weeks.  I keep the books close to my bed.
JeanneP

RAMMEL

As far as reading on an electronic device, I have never done that (except my desktop and laptop).  I'm not a big reader or a good reader but there are times I have to and would like to read. My son is a big reader but always printed books.

If I were to get one of the new "readers", what would be a good choice.  I would look for large enough print to see without having to scroll back and forth, ease of operation, availability of material, ---------- all that good, easy stuff.  Also, something easy and light enough to be comfortable.

Rammel.  Now I have a Ipad which I think is the best for downloading books but expensive if you just want to download Books. Easy to download. Its Apple

I also bought a Amazon Fire. Its a Tablet. Good buy when they have them on a good price on the QVC. Got mine half price. Can get for under $100 at the stores. I really like that because it is smaller and easy to take in purse
to read when waiting appointments etc.
I bought another one last time QVC had a special. Never heard name before but guess well known. It is 10" and really good for reading books.  You can use all of them to get onto Internet. E-M. and most any other thing I use.

Doubt I ever pay the big dollars for another IPad . the others good enough for me now.
You will maybe read more if you can just pick what you want to read and put it on in a few minutes. Also. Lots for 99 cents and many free. I get a  list sent from 2 places every week telling me these sale price one

The Kindle is quite popular, has a big choice of books to buy.  There are different models. The more recent gives more possibilities such as clearer page.  In all you can change the size of text to suit you.

maryz

I recently got a Samsung Tablet, and it's very nice to read on.  On all the devices, you can vary the size of the type.  I wouldn't get an Apple product, unless all your other devices are Apple. They are good, but like to be "together".  ;)

Another thought / question. ---- What are the subscription requirements?  Must a separate wireless service be purchased?

Rammel.  Now you have to have WIFI in your house. (I am sure you have it) but now outside most places have it.  Here in my are even on the streets. Parks . It is up in all the street stop lights. Have to be careful though if have a expensive one and using it in parks and places. Lots of them get stolen but that is the same as laptops if you don't use in a busy area or you on a Parking lot. Same with Iphones. They take them and throw away if they are the cheaper one.
JeanneP

maryz

Rammel, at least for what I have (I've also had a Kindle, iPad, and get books on my phone), what's needed is access to wifi in order to receive the books.  Once downloaded into the device (which is really a small computer), you don't need to be connected to read.  You'll be able to purchase books from Amazon, B&N, and various other sources, or "borrow" them from your local library or some online library.  Also frequently available are free and very cheap (0.99 and up) books available.  I find them to be very user-friendly, and no longer read "paper" books at all.

I have two Kindle Fires, versions 7 and 8, one was given to me by the Internet company for signing up. I also have an Android phone, a laptop, and a desktop computer. All five devices sync the books from Amazon and one other called Instfreebie. Then I have one similar to a Kindle that is a Pentax and will read the Google books that I order.

You can get from free and up in price if you have an Amazon membership. All you need is that Internet hookup. My Amazon basic membership is free, but I do pay 9.99 monthly to have a revolving list of ten books that are free to read of my choosing. I also get one free book, a piece of music or video free a month with my Prime membership. Prime costs 99.00 a year but is worth it if you order a large variety of things from Amazon and with that membership you never pay to ship unless you are buying from a third party vendor.

I have over 2000 books in my content that is synced over the five devices and probably around 75 on my Pentax. But then I have been reading since I was three and if I'm not reading, I can get irritable. I feel I am addicted to reading. I read nonfiction, space and science fiction, cookbooks, self-help, and photography and often have more than one book at a time going.

I am not a television watcher, it often bores me and reading and taking classes is something that informs, influences and relaxes me. We are all different and read different things but one thing that really gets me going is book banning or burning. It may not be something I want to read, but I'm sure someone does and it is not up to me or others to say they can or cannot.

RAMMEL

Thanks all for the comments about the items I asked for.
I do have WiFi here at home from my puter router/modem
I think I'll be going to one of the local electronics stores so I can look and ask for a demo

I have an Android but there's no way I could read a book with it. I came here to S&F with it but it was impossible to do anything because of the scrolling needed to see things (large enough for me to see).
I'm not a big reader of books in general but could spend hours reading tech manuals, magazines, instructional stuff. Legal stuff puts me to sleep with the first paragraph.
Again - THANKS.  Add more if anything comes to mind.

Rammel, I'm no expert on "devices" but I do have a Kindle which was a gift from one of my kids.  I have downloaded favorites (like all of Jane Austin's books which I reread) from Amazon, but I much prefer a real book.  Paper backs are OK with me--and I often buy used from Amazon.  To me, the problem with a Kindle is that if you're reading on a page and want to go back to a previous page to verify something, it is a pain to find the exact location you want.  Other readers think reading on a Kindle or other device is wonderful, so you might want to borrow someone's device and see how you like it.  I think it's a personal preference.

Sue

JeanneP

Now our library will loan our the Kindles. Will show how to put a book on it. See if yours do. Doubt you get anyone in the stores that will know how to do it. Most young who work there just do everything on a phone now and some never read a book.

Not computer, but no discussion.   I have used Photobucket to post photos in the photo discussion.   Have been having big problems with it.   Here are two links.   http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84688.html       http://www.csoonline.com/article/3205765/internet/photobucket-replaced-millions-of-images-with-ransom-demand.html

Having problems with posting in the gallery.  Any suggestions as to programs to use, or help with posting from gallery?

Photobucket is no longer supporting "third party hosting".  They offer that service now for a fee.  If you have been using Photobucket for putting pic's on another site you will get an email from them "discussing" the new setup & offer.

From a website ---
"Photobucket have started trying to charge users to third party host images on forums.

This undermines a lot of hard work that hobbyists put in to both the online community and the economy

Car enthusiasts, scale modeller, musicians, artists, flower arrangers. Anyone with a hobby, that uses photobucket will NOT be able to post images on your favourite forums without paying $399."

Rick I was putting up with adds, understand they have to have revenue.  Now understand I would pay around $300 a year, no way.  I only hav 211 photos on their site, all for the purpose of posting on Seniors.   Have to find another host, or figure out our photo gallery.

jane

The email I got said $40.00 a month, and I removed all my important pictures.  They can take a long walk off a short pier.  I can't imagine the ordinary person using their site paying that outrageous ( to me) charge.

angelface555

I stopped going to Photobucket when my credit card wouldn't work unless I chose the next highest price for storage. Now Amazon Drive, formerly free, wants 60. per year. I use Google Photos as it is still free and it syncs with all of my devices. I take a photo with my Android and it appears on my cell and Google Photos simultaneously. No telling how long it will be free but it has been since 2009 so far.

I have all of my PSP graphics and photos there as well as Amazon Prime that allows unlimited photos only but that is paid by my Prime subscription.Because I have had pictures lost before due to computers  I have them also on a 3 T "Book" brand external drive as well as many on Nikon's site and Yahoo's Flicka.

Research everything nowadays, never take their word for granted.

jackwv

Jane, the only photos I have on photoshop are ones I posted in Seniors.   Do not want to delete those posted on the new site since it would blank out the photo in the discussion.  Guess I can delete the older ones.

Patricia I can use Google photos but does it give you the link to post here.   I am not interested in the cloud or having all the photos available on the phone and pad.   I keep all I want on the computer, external hard drive and flash drives.

angelface555

Jack, you have to download from Google Photos, the ones you want to post to your pictures folder. That's what I do. I use the Attachments and other options below the message block and when I click on Choose File, it opens in my pictures. You just need to direct it to where you want it to find your photos. It makes a copy of the photos for you to post.

Google, Amazon and similar programs will not link to here.

Patricia, how do you link photos from your picture folder to a discussion, I see where it will link to facebook etc but how do you get the link to post in the discussion.

OK just went back and tried the attachment, that I never used.  The photo came up as almost a thumbnail, but clicking on it enlarged.   Understand we still have to resize to Seniors limits.

so_P_bubble

Jack, you have to resize it to S&F requirement, then when you attach it, choose in the next window "full size".

Jeanne Lee

I think the choice for "full size" is available only for global mods.  However, the post can be very easily "modified" by the mod or admin to show the photo full size in the message.

Thanks, really a great way to post.   Here is one photo was getting a small photo that would enlarge when clicked, but this time I had the option      inline full-image [attachimg=1]
