Wonder if the young ladies of today would know what a rub board is.?

JaneS

Hal, we called it a scrub board.  I knew how to use it by the time I was about 6.

Jane , as I said in the email, I not only have a special son but a special friend and I hope you don't mind me telling what you have done for me. Jane, got two canners, one for her and one for me. My son, a trucker met Jane (I am sooooo envious of him) as he got to meet this wonderful lady.!!! And when I tell her that I am listening to the sound of music ,she knows it is the sound of the jar lids popping.

Hal, I have one here.tis in the basement but I haven't used it.

Hal, I have what I call a wash board but it is the same thing.  I've just kept it because....
Actually, I only remember having running water and indoor bathrooms in my lifetime.  However, across the street from us, two homes had outdoor toilets.  I don't know about one, but where my friends lived, they had a pitcher pump in the kitchen, a Michigan basement and heated in the winter with a potbelly stove.  Eventually they wanted to put an indoor bathroom in the basement and the city wasn't going to allow it until they realized the family would keep using the outdoor john so the city relented.  After many years the family pushed out the back of the house to enlarge the kitchen and put in a full bath.  They also put a furnace in the basement after putting walls and floor in the basement.  When the kids were young, all four of them slept in the unfinished upstairs.  When they remodeled for the kitchen and bath, they put two bedrooms upstairs.  The other family eventually put in a bath between two bedrooms, taking space from both bedrooms.

More memories, Hal.

Hi Everyfriend!  I've got the beets sitting on the counter to cool and (AMY) I've been listening to "The Sound of Music".  I love that canner!  I know you do, too.  I don't mind your telling about it.  I just didn't want to say anything that might be compromising to your son.

I'm really beat today and I still have a chicken in the crock pot that has to be picked off the bones and put in the freezer for the Chicken pot pie.  I think I'll just put the pot out of the crock pot in the fridge and do that tomorrow.  It'll be easier when it's cooled off anyway.

I think I'm finally getting over whatever it was that was getting me down last week.  Today is the first day in a while that I've actually felt like doing anything.  And going to work tomorrow morning isn't bothering me at all.

I hope you all had a good day and that you will enjoy your evening, sleep well and wake refreshed.

Yes, wash boards.....that in a galvanized round tub, where my Mom worked (slaved) getting everything sparkling white before the things went on the clothes line. That tub was also the bathtub for my brother and I when we were little ones. God must have a special place for those mothers who worked so hard, back in those early years.

Gloria de, I hope you have a better sleep tonight. When those legs are hurting, have you tried massaging them. I find that helps mine.

Have a peaceful night my dear friends. And a glorious tomorrow. Hugs, Love and Prayers.

MARIJUANA and MARRIAGE
In Washington State On a single day, Washington State recently passed two laws.
They are:
1. Legalized gay marriage, and
2. Legalized marijuana.
Legalizing gay marriage and marijuana on the same day now makes perfect Biblical sense.

Leviticus 20:13 says:
"If a man lies with another man they should be stoned.”
Apparently we just hadn't interpreted it correctly before!

Good Morning Everyfriend!  Today is supposed to be in the low 80s...not too bad!  I can take the low 80s even without A/C.  We had some rain during the night and the mid 70s over night.

LLOYD!  NOW I understand why they're legalizing marijuana!

We're in waiting time for Annie's pill and then it will be breakfast, get ready and off to Wally World for my shift.  I really do feel much better today.  I just thought I was tired last week but I guess I really did have a bit of a bug.

I hope you all have a wonderful day today and I hope today is the day we hear from our own sweet Joanie.  Wouldn't that make our day special!

Good morning everyone.

Going to be a lovely day here, cooler temperature and no humidity!

I have a date with some cupboards today, gremlins have mixed everything up in them on me. I managed to get the outside work done yesterday and just need to pick beans later on today.

Jane, glad you are over that flu bug, that can zap the energy right out of a person.

Better get a move on here.

Enjoy your day everyone.

Good Morning Everyone!

I see the early birds beat me in this morning.  Of course Janie and Amy are always up and posting before me.

Not much going on, wife and I are talking about a new couch.  Our present one is just too soft, if I sit down on it or the love seat I have a time trying to get out of it.  Of course I have my recliner but it is off to the side and the TV gets blurry.  I know, always something to gripe about.  I told the wife we should get one of those reclining sofa's.  She is mulling it over.  Furniture is in her department, she is nice though cause she will pretend I have a say... ;)

Coffee is ready, who wants a cup.

Janie, glad you are feeling much better, don't let anyone spoil your day.

Hi everyone. We start out the day sunny with expected high temperatures in the mid-90's.  We had some thunder yesterday but no rain and not a big chance of rain today.

I did get over to Home Depot and picked up the new dehumidifier yesterday and Scott will be over later today to help get it out of the box and set up.  It weighs about 50 pounds.  I don't want to turn it on its said as they told me I would have to wait for 24 hours to use it if I did because of something about the Freon.  I am hopeful that Scott on one side and I on the other we will be able to lift it out of the box so we can start using it today.  My friend, who loaned me his dehumidifier will be here before noon to take his unit back home.

I am also awaiting the delivery of a UPS package, which is out for delivery,  of a new small combined Windows 10 and Tablet computer that Kim Komando has designed.  It is relatively inexpensive and if we don't like it we can return it in 30 days for our money back.  I have been wanting to get a lighter weight computer for Pat and while this is smaller than her laptop it is much lighter.  Once it is delivered today I will get it setup like her current laptop and she can try it out.

Shirley, you certainly do spoil your cats with that rotisserie chicken from Sam's Club.  I hope your cats now are expressing their gratitude to you for replenishing their supply of chicken yesterday.

June, I think the dehumidifier will be beneficial to our health as it will prevent mold from developing in our walls and other places in our house.  I should have done this when we first moved here but assumed you had to dump the water.  This unit I purchased has a pump so that will not be necessary.  Being kind to folks and smiling is something we all can do regardless of how we may feel.  It costs of nothing and blesses us a lot with the returned smiles.  for many years on the farm as I was growing up we had a pump inside the kitchen and two very good artesian wells on the farm that never went dry even during the drought.  Mother had to heat water in the kitchen and take out to the wash house for the old wringer type washer.  I was 19 years old before I ever had my own room and slept on a daybed out in our main living area and we also didn't have indoor plumbing other than the sink in the kitchen.  I didn't know I was deprived.  :) I am now spoiled with the modern conveniences in our homes and plan on staying that way.

Hal and Mary Ann, it is fun to recall memories of our growing up days.  I sure didn't want for things to do and spent a lot of time outdoors playing as a child  and then working on the farm as I got older. Isn't that scrub board a musical instrument?  Just kidding as I know very well what it is.

Amy, aren't we blessed with having some wonderful people in our lives.  We hear so little about all the good people and so much about the bad apples in our society.

Lloyd, I hope you are feeling better each day.  Jane, nice to read that you are feeling better and was looking forward to your time behind the cash register today.

Larry, I think, especially during the Depression, that many of us were poor only we didn't know it because others were in the same boat.  I know I've mentioned this before that one neighbor lost his job and my folks won some groceries at the local store (no supermarkets those days) and give them to those neighbors.  Dad always had a job but in those days was only paid in the nine months he worked, so my folks had to scrounge for money too.  Dad was a Scout Master and was gone much of the summer but must have come home sometimes because Mother did not drive and somehow we got groceries.  One story was that she watered the lawn enough that we had the best looking lawn on the street.  Then came the bill, which was high, and that was the end of the best looking lawn.  Dad also worked at a friend's apple orchard picking apples.  He got there one day and was told they were with Macs so he went out calling "hey, Mac".  Found out they were picking Macintosh apples.  As he was a printing teacher, Dad sometimes worked at a printing company downtown.  That ended when he found out Norm and I had supper nightly at the nearby ice cream place.  My mother died in 1941 and Dad died in 1970; he never remarried so he had a lot of free summers to work or not.

Here we go again with memories!

Good morning everyone, yesterday was a busy one. Out "wonderful" manager sent out a message to several of us to check our apartments for cigrette smoke damage in our apartments, whether we smoke or not. I do stop into the smoke shack to chat with the ones in there. So naturally my clothes smell when I leave there. The smokers are upset and so am I. If she decides there is damage she will charge us for the washing and painting to a cost of $5,000. If any of us had that kind of money we would not be living here. One is a man across the hall whose apartment was done 2 years ago after there was flood damage from ice on the roof.  This is a smoke free building now but they smoked in here before that happened. I know I have no smoke damage in here but just the thought of her coming in here checking all the corners irritates me.

JENNY  I copied your message from yesterday. So true, not enough love in the world anymore.

SHIRLEY  those cats are so spoiled. The problems here are that not every one will sign a petition. They had tried that before I moved here and those who complained the most were the ones who were all talk and would not sign. My thought is she will be old one day and I hope she gets treated the way she treats us.

JUNE  when my daughter first moved to San Diego she loved all the sunshine. Several months later she said she did not think she would get tired of it and long for rain.

Better go get my bed made. The witch would probably mention me being lazy. Have no idea what time she will start checking all of us.

I'm home, had lunch, chased the doggies outside, gave them a snack and now I have a cup of coffee.

I once again drew both halves of my shift on busy, food-end belt registers.  It was tiring but not as bad as last Tuesday.  I guess I really did have a bug.  I'll still keep hoping that I don't draw that situation again but at least I know it's doable.

I think I'll take a short nap before I start picking the chicken off the bone.  I'm thinking about making some of it into chicken salad for sandwiches and that's what I
ll have for supper.  Have to hard boil some eggs to put in the leftover beet juice, too.  That won't take long.

You all take care of yourselves and enjoy the rest of your day.  I'm certainly going to enjoy mine!

Have one camp quilt done binding and all now I can move onto another one.....Think Film at Five.that uses up a lot of scraps and I sure have those!!!

Salads for supper tonight, made a tuna macaroni and a bean salad and will have other things to go with it.

Good Morning dear hearts, I'm getting in just under the wire as it is 11:25 on the West coast. I went down for a lovely program of two of our employees. Bashara is a Coptic Christian, and I think Grace may be a Roman Catholic. She had pictures of the whole 45 minute wedding, and it was very impressive….almost like a Royal wedding, the three officiants were dressed to the teeth in special vestments. Later they had a reception for all of us here at Rowntree Gardens, hosted by our management. I am sure by the end of the day Grace and Bashara must have been worn out. It was a delight to have spent the morning watching the wedding on our big screen t.v. in the club house.

So I am late dragging my self in here.

Janie, I am so glad you were able to keep yourself going in spite of having a "bug" dragging you down. Thanks be to God, you recovered in spite of not taking care of yourself. I too am eagerly awaiting a message from our Joan/Bis. I don't think she will be ready to take over the post right away, but just having her here will be a treat.

Jeanne Lee, I can't thank you enough for keeping us going. I pray that you may have some good news on your medical condition that you can share with us. Prayers do continue.

Hal, I hope your wife will get a couch with two recliners. One should have your name on it. Gary bought me a separate recliner that operates on electricity so his old mother, when she weakens, will just push a button to recline in various positions. I practically live in it…….when I am not of the internet.

Larry, living in a dry climate, I have no problem with mold, but I understand it can be very harmful on one's health, so you have done well to find one that will operate easily. We are all living so much longer now, there should be a special program just for Seniors..in where and what to buy, and live, and enjoy. I read somewhere that our Grandchildren or Great Grandchildren could easily live to over a hundred years of age.

Mary Ann, you are so correct. During the Great Depression many people were poor. Our young people that ran the Red Owl grocery store went bankrupt as folks ran up big bills they could not pay. Many families, mine included, lived on Government surplus. It was stored at the local fire house, and folks were ashamed to have to go there to receive food. In our small town we had one clothing store that catered to the folks that could afford better things…they had to close down their business too. It was a hard time in the lives of many back when I was a kid.

Gloria, I would not live under that Managers rules and regulations without fighting her in legal means. She has NO right to enforce conditions as she is doing. There are organizations that renters can appeal to. I wish I knew how they are listed so they could be contacted. This is not the Third Reich. This is America.

Time for me to shut up and go down for lunch. Hugs my beloved friends. June

It's interesting about the pot pie.  I did a search and all I found was the ones that are actually baked in a crust.  I had thought I'd try to put a clickable in to show you the difference.

The one I've had all my life was probably from my German grandfather's family and it's not a pie at all.  It's made in a large pot.  You begin with the chicken and a lot of broth.  This is in the pot to begin.  You make a dough of eggs, flour and salt which is rolled and then cut into squares.  When the broth is boiling gently, you add the dough squares so that each one gets moistened.  You also add potatoes and it all cooks gently together until the dough is the texture of thick noodles.  The thickness of the dough varies with the whim of the cook.  My family likes it cut pretty thick because that's the way my grandfather used to cut it, and my mother after him and her daughter (ME) after her.  It's a very starchy meal and a very filling one.  During the Depression years, we had it often....I think as a way to stretch a small amount of meat and fill up a hungry family.  It's always been one of my favorite meals.

And it's also a favorite of my daughter, Cindy.  and she's coming from Texas for a visit in September.

Jane, thank you, we would love that so I am going to give it a try. Sounds like an easy but filling dinner to make. Cauliflower was on sale for a rather large head and I bought 2 thinking one for us and one for the girls. Turns out one girl prefers hers cooked ,sh also loves her carrots cooked where the other one loves raw veggies.

Looks like I was last out yesterday and first in this morning.  And I do apologize.  I seem to have left all the lights on.  I thought Shirley or Jenny would be by and turn them off when they left.

We're in wait time for Annie's pill.  OOPS!  the beeper just went off so I have to go feed the doggies and grab myself some breakfast.  Then I have to deal with some things in the fridge and get them in the freezer.  And that's my day for today.  I'll be smiling at customers at WM between 3 and 7 and then (I suspect) lollygagging around for the rest of the evening.

Good morning everyone...

Another lovely day here. Going to town this morning to pick up papers for the Dr. tomorrow. Later this morning we are going to a friends cottage, this is the one that we put the addition on. They have the perfect spot on the lake, in a bay and no one close by.

Good morning Jane!!

Better go get ready,

Good morning everyone. Just turned the TV on for the morning news. Of course right now talking about hurricane Gert. Looks like it is heading east so we will not get hit but will get high surf. They showed surfers at one beach sitting on their boards waiting for a big wave. Must have been 2 dozen in the area they showed. For 2 days they have been cautioning people about rip tides.

JUNE   I will be happy to see JOAN just show up and say hello and nothing else. I can understand the no smoking rules, many buildings are like that now.
What I dislike is that it seems she is calling me a liar along with many others, some smokers and  some not. This no smoking went in after i moved here. Some of the smokers have been here since the building opened and feel they should have been grandfathered in so could smoke where they want.

JEANNE LEE  thanks for the link.

JANE  on my does that look yummy. Makes me wish I could still cook like I used to. With a big family my Mom was great with stretching food. I remember we had a lot of different soups and I still enjoy home made soup.

Good Morning Everyone!

Gloria, I think I would have to challenge that "lady" on you smoking.  And just ask her why she thinks you smoke when you don't.  Looks like she would have enough to do without worrying about the smokers.   If it is so important why don't they just pass a rule that smokers will not be allowed to live there or move them all to a specific area of the building, like a floor all their own.

I have to take my wifes car back to dealer, they did something to the tire sensor when they rotated the tires, lite on dash says it has failed.

I was up early this morning, as well as Gloria, LOL, I forgot to put trash out last night so had to get it out before they came, sometimes they are here early, early and next week, lateish, you just never know.

Yes, I wish we would hear from our Joanie, miss that lady.  I hope she is back soon.

Amy know you are going to enjoy your visit to the lake, always nice to get away to some place like that.  Early mornings with a cuppa in hand and the silky smooth of the water and quite like no other place.  I know you husband must be looking forward to it.

Coffee is ready, who's joining me?

Hi everyone. We are in for another very hot day getting up to 96 or above this afternoon with little chance of rain.

I did get the new little computer/tablet last evening and probably 3 hours working on it.  However, I am very disappointed this morning as it will not start up.  I think it may well have a defective battery as I noticed when using it last evening that the battery kept going down rather than charging as it should since it was connected to the electrical power.  It is a shame as I think Pat would have enjoyed using it.  I will call Kim Komando later this morning but am pretty sure I will have to return it.  Scott did stop by for a few minutes yesterday and got the dehumidifier out of the box and It ran all evening.  I wasn't able to hook the hose up as couldn't get the little plug out and will see if Scott can tonight.  By about 10 pm the tank was full.  I told Pat to just turn it off and I would empty the tank this morning, which I have done.  The unit is easy to move and I could roll it to the bathroom door and remove the tank.  That way if any water spilled it would be on the tile and not the wooden floor.

We will go out this evening with Scott and Jennifer for the evening meal.  Pat does have a 10 am appointment with the Pain Clinic but I won't need to go with her.

Mary Ann, sometimes I feel a bit ashamed when I consider how hard my folks worked for so many years as they lived on the farm.  When I left home my dad did sell the dairy cattle and went to beef cattle.

Gloria, your manager strikes again.  I don't blame you for being aggravated but obviously you have nothing to be concerned about other than your invasion of privacy by the manager.

JaneS, do I remember correctly that your store removed the self-checkout area? Glad your busy registers didn't exhaust you like it did last week.  I don't think I ever saw hard boiled eggs put into beet juice. I wonder why the pot pie you make is called a pie?

Amy, like you and Hal what Jane described as a crust less pot pie sounds like what my mother used to make called chicken and dumplings.  I never cared for dumplings as didn't like the balls of flour.  We often enjoy a salad dinner and expect one is coming up soon but need to get more lettuce.  Your salad sounds delicious.  Hope you and your husband enjoy your day at the cabin on the lake.

June, nice that you and others could enjoy the wedding pictures.  Nice that your management held a reception for the couple and you were able to participate. Both Pat and I have the easy chairs that are operated on an electric motor.  I spend every afternoon and evening in mine after I get up from resting.  It is very comfortable.

I have had some communication with Kevin on the Isle of Man and he asked me to convey his best wishes to Joan.

JaneS

LARRY and anyone else, potpie noodles are NOTHING like dumplings.  I do not like dumplings.  To me they are just a lump of flour that's wet on the outside.  Potpie is so called because #1 it's made in a large pot and #2 the noodles are made from a dough that might be made into a pie crust if one so desired.  The finished product is more like a thick, fat noodle than a dumpling.  I never cared to learn how to make dumplins.  Heck, I never cared to eat them either.  I wish I could just invit all of you over for dinner and make potpie so you could see what it really is.

Also, our store has NOT removed the self check outs.  In fact, they added them at the other end also.  We have a total of about 14 self check outs and as far as I know, they're not going anywhere soon.  I do use them occasionally but I don't like them and I haven't trained to work them.

Have to get back to my kitchen chores.
