Since some folks would like to see this started up again, let's give it a try.
Remember, if you provide an answer to a request you must request another subject.
Let's start off with

fall scene when all the leaves are turning golden.
While the rules are that if you post a photo you are to make a request, I would suggest that lookers in that do not post photos, let us know things you may want to see. Those posting photos might then respond to your suggestion.
Very good idea Jack. I love to look at others pictures but I don't take pictures and wouldn't know how to post them if I did :).
I would love to see a fall scene when all the leaves are turning golden.

and autumn leaves ! :)
Give me ... a tea cup or a coffee mug!
Bubble a good one and with fall leaves.
Jack, you sometimes say that you don't know the names of flowers, trees or birds. I think your bird is a Cedar Waxwing, a fascinating bird (to me).

Show me a body of water (pond, pool, lake etc)
Pat that mug is too nice to drink from. Jean that is quite a band. I had just finished my photo to show someone the Vignette feature on windows app.
Haha, love it!!!! Rolling them in. Great photos, everyone!
I was also going to say Jack's bird is a female cedar waxwing. You got a better shot than most found on the internet. I had a male one that someone brought for me to revive, it have been laying on the ground all day outside their office... I kept it a few days/week and turned it over to the city naturalist because we were going out of town. They were migrating through. I made it a box with evergreen limbs, fed it apple & of course, scrambled egg & what ever fruit & meat I had on hand. The bird would eat as long as I talked to it, didn't seem to be injured at all, hated to turn it over to someone else .... Sadly, I called when we got back & was told it died the next day... "but they took lots of photos of it". That was NOT what I hoped for.
Jack, that vignette feature is awesome, will give it a try when I get a chance. Another birthday party tonight so I've been doing what I can to help since everyone else is super busy today.
Always enjoyed the "Show me a photo off". time when I feel bad that I just can't get photo's in here. Enjoy other peoples...
Good thought Jack has of if you can't post a photo then just make a request to SEE. Will give people that have lots of photo and so smart showing them a chance to post more. Still can vote of the best photo . Will maybe vote after maybe a dozen instead of having to have a lot of the same thing. Will go fast.
JeanneP with the new post there is no competition and no voting. That is the way I like it. Just posting photos on request and hope all enjoy.
This is a common type of pond here that is made up of snow runoff, stays deep and then by late August has soaked back into the ground leaving only a grassy depression.
[attachimg=1]
Show me a photo of a zoo animal.
Lion at Pittsburgh Zoo
He was staring me down and you know I did not get close. One of my favorites.
Give me a photo of tree
[attachimg=1]
Patricia, how still that water is & perfect reflections of the trees! Beautiful colors. What kind of trees are those?
What camera did you use on the lion, Jack? Very sharp fur & eyes.... even the foliage is sharp. That is the type painting I enjoy most.. always start with the eyes & work out. His fur almost looks like it's been brushed, doesn't it? Is that his mate below right? Was she pretty?
Shirley, those were paper birch in the spring.
Jack, would I be able to use your photo on my PSP, (Paint shop Pro?). Terrific lion photo!

Give me a ball
Oh, I am sure enjoying these...
...Jack wv...I nearly spilt my cup of tea when I came face to face with your close up Lion at 6.15 am this morning...guess he-she was the last thing I was expecting but, what a great capture... :thumbup:
Pat, feel free to use the photo. Jackie, it really was a stare down. Shirley I used the Panasonic prior to the 200.
Jean great and unusual trees.
I am posting the full photo of the lions in the photo discussion, you can see the value of having a good photo and being able to crop.
Now lets see Jeans request for a ball.
I don't have a ball :( :(
Bubble, your little grandson didn't leave a ball around the house?
No - he was here today with a big balloon, but that is not a ball.
Don't you have one?
Show me a photo of a train. I still love to ride trains to New Orleans to visit my son's family.
Sue
Bubble here is a clip from a video I have of a Polar Bear playing with a ball. Jump in, you would both have a ball :)
[attachimg=1]
Now lets get that photo of a train for Sue.
Thank you Jack! I looked at both photos and that stare is both entense and mesmerizing.
Sue requested a photo of a train, and I know there are train lovers in here that might have a photo. My father worked on the railroad, and we traveled on them, but never had a camera growing up.
Sue the best I can do is a clip from my video of the train exhibit at Oglebay. Here it is, but lets still see about getting a photo of a real train.
[attachimg=1]
I looked in all my files and don't even have one, not even a toy one :(
Same here - not a single photo of any kind of train. I know when we had a challenge "Transportation" there were several train entries but I guess those people must not be posting any more.
OK Sue, we can wait or I will give you another choice. :)
Jack, give another choice, or we'' be stacked here.
What about showing a picture for choice as an option and asking for another photo on the same theme? It could make it more interesting...
Just looking and enjoying.
This is a photo of the train engine that pulls cars for people around the park. My father, a welder helped restore this former gold camp train engine for use at Alaskaland in 1967.
[attachimg=1]
I don't know if a ball photo was done but here is a photo of my cat's toy with a ball inside.
Give me a photo of a kitchen utensil.
[attachimg=1]
Hooray for Patricia - she found us a train photo.
But now, Patricia, what do you want to see next?
I wanted to see a photo of a kitchen utensil.
I was holding off hoping to see more new folks posting.
Have a drawer full of kitchen utensils I never use, including this one.
Now how about a photo of a place setting.

[attachimg=2]
Marylyn beautiful setting, beats my paper plates, but would be nervous cleaning them.
Left Photobucket and will not go back, have learned how to use the attachment feature below the post.
Bubble Aviv has sure grown.
Now lets see your cake request.
Jack - I tried the attachment under the post but I couldn't get it right. I'll practice before I post another photo.
Bubble - a sweet newborn photo of Aviv!
Angel, great photo of the train. Enjoying all the photos. Hope someone comes up with the birthday cake. Don't think I have one.
Angelface, thanks for your train picture. It looks like a train that is run fairly often in our neighboring town, Opelika, Alabama. They have a train in their town park that runs around the park--I've never ridden it, but it's very popular and we often see pictures of it in our local newspaper. When I was growing up in West Virginia, our small town was a stop on a few local trains and every night about 11:30, a long distance train going to California stopped in Charleston, about 12 miles away. My sisters and I knew we needed to get home before the train came by or we would be grounded!
Here in Auburn, I can hear long freight trains daily--at least 3 times and another often if I'm awake at night. Our depot has closed and become a gourmet restaurant. Students at the University here used to arrive and leave by train before so many began bringing cars to the campus.
SCFSue
Thanks, Sue and Jean for the nice comments. That train engine used to be in a gold camp where it would bring the ore from the mine to be processed. When we opened Alaskaland, it was for our centennial and the engine was brought from the abandoned camp and restored to pull cars for tourists and locals at the park.
Bubble I see Aviv has always been good looking! :)
Patricia, your picture of the train sent me to my album of an Alaskan trip in June, 2004.
Quite a few pictures of Centennial Park, including a ride on the train, eating at the Alaskan Salmon Bake and seeing the Golden Heart Revue.
The last entries for Anchorage are the newspaper article and picture headlined "Wildfires Smoke Out Fairbanks". The night before, I had taken a picture of the midnight sun through the smoke haze.
You brought back a lot of memories for me Callie, thank you. Centennial Park was rebranded Alaskaland but is the same place with a few modifications. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip!

That's quite a cake, Jean. How old is he? Cute great-grandson, too.
Mary Ann
He just turned 5 yrs in June---full of energy and always smiling.
FlaJean, Great grandson Jacob is a VERY handsome lad. The birthday cake with the baker's hat is really cute, too! Thanks for sharing.
Sue
[attachimg=1]
Give me a book
Jean, Jacob is very handsome and Bubble, Santa reminds me of someone and it isn't Don!
Santa is looking familiar...I wonder if he is known to us?
ha ha ha Santa sure knows all of you and can see you have all been very good ;D
No one has a book?
Bubble I thought Santa also knew when we were bad (he missed a bit)
Just having morning coffee and almost did not see the request for a book, hope to see a post.
[attachimg=1]
My post above is a screen shot that may help those that would like to post a photo. Sorry, small to meet our requirements. You might clip and give it a go. Would be great to have additional viewers post their photos.

Now surprise, I am not posting Mimi, my latest. This is Kibbles from 1985 and the first of my four Goldens.
Know we are quick with a response, but I have been out with yard work and as usual back to the computer.
How about another pet to give others a chance.

Give me a photo of a bridge.
What a beauty!
He posed for me while he was watching his wife build their nest in my birdhouse. :D
JeanneLee, I agree, a great photo of a beautiful bird.
Here is a Covered Bridge in Washington County Pa, just north of me.
Requesting a photo of a child or children at play.
[attachimg=1]
Jack, how I envy those two folks fishing under the bridge. What a beautiful quite place to spend some time just relaxing when a line in the water. Like my Dad used say, hopefully they didn't have any fish spoil it by being caught. He always said now we have to clean the nasty things.... ;D
Great picture....
Hal your dad had it right. We just liked to sit on the bank, and if we caught a fish always tossed it back in. Was lucky to catch the two fishing that trip.
It took me all that time to find a bridge in all my photos... so you will have it late!
It is in Israel.

Show me a photo of a CLOCK
Jean that is a work of art. Going to make myself a big cup now, with cream, but no fancy work.
Yummy Jean!
Jack, not even on all 4 like Aviv? LOL
Now, where did I file that photo of Prague Clock???
For lookers in it may seem like this is a race to post. Really not and if someone replys to a request no problem in someone else doing the same. For that matter even responding to an old request. I know we have a good photo discussion, but nice to have a spot to respond to requests old or new. Now that is just my opinion but :knuppel2: :knuppel2:
After posting I had to determine the meaning of that symbol. It is a Knuppel and I see the definition is "a blunt instrument used to bludgeon someone with, such as a club or a cudgel" (but you are all safe in here)
Here is a clock without time. Spotted it at a sale and felt it would be a good decoration. Have it on the side of a shed.
Now again how about a real clock.
[attachimg=1]
I am thoroughly enjoying EVERY photo! Shirley
Oglebay Clock.
Still need another clock photo.

Bird Clock
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/96-160817110500.jpeg)
Just another entry for a clock.
Lovely clock photos. But how about a request for something else? Jack, I think you posted the first clock, so......
One more: my daughter visited Prague a few years ago and stood there listening to the chimes..
[attachimg=1]
Give me a KEY
Wow, Bubble, amazing clock and terrific photo!
Bubble that is great, and now JeanneLee is right, time to move along so will look for your request a Key
Please, post as many keys as you have, this could be interesting. I just remembered I have a very old padlock with its key, I have to take a photo...
Meanwhile here is a picture my daughter took in Portugal: the iron key to the Gate of a National Palace in the town they visited.
[attachimg=1]
Wow, now that is a key... :o ... just wondering what size the door was...
I was hoping people would have keys, car or otherwise :idiot2:
Here is my very old paddlock key
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Bubble, a few great keys. Have nothing to offer, I always forget my keys :)
Bubble, I've been to Prague 3 times (during escorted tours) and the tour guides always stop at that clock! Prague is a great city for tourists, IMHO! Thanks for the picture of the clock.
SCFSue
Nice keys Bubble! Now I know who to come to if I get locked out! :thumbup:
[attachimg=2]
Don...what does it open?... is it the key to someones heart, the name we shan't mention...but you know who... ;)
...these keys are coming thick and fast now...
Good one Don, is it in use?
[attachimg=1]
The resized key...
That is a beautiful key. It could almost be jewelry if it was smaller. So shiny too. Do you polish it daily? :D

Show me a photo of a computer
I used to have 4 or 5 bookcases full of books, but since we downsized I've had to compromise and use iBooks and the Kindle app on my iPad. I still have some hardback books I just couldn't let go but they are still packed. ;). This is just a sample of books. I've got lots more. After I read them I send them to the cloud :)
This is my precious little Oxford Dictionary
[attachimg=1]
and now looking for a photo of a computer
On the 17th I donated nine pieces of older scruffed and banged up furniture to have room for the new items I'm saving for. One of them was my old desk so my desktop computer setup is currently cobbled together while I look for a new table for all my camera and computer pieces.
[attachimg=1]
I'm thinking about something like an entertainment center with a central shelf for the desktop, but I'm still deciding. My house looks so empty now.
[attachimg=1]
In that spirit, show me a shelving unit.
Computer and shelving unit.
Give me a favorite photo, regardless of subject.
[attachimg=1]
Jack, As usual not a thing out of place on your computer are. I would be to embarrassed to take a copy of mine even if I was smart enough to do it. Having these doors that I can just close on a Armoire make me untidy. ( I don't like the Armoire )
Here's the rest of my stuff from the desk. I really need to find one that works yet is slim. It's hard to believe that all of that stuff and my two computers sat on that old desk.
[attachimg=1]
Here is a photo I took on the way south in 2008. http://www.explorenorth.com/articles/black_rapids_glacier-1937.html
[attachimg=1]
Good one Pat, and one south of me. Southern West Virginia. An old grist mill, had to stand on rocks in the stream for the photo.
[attachimg=1]
I am not going to comment on EVERY photo, they are all SO special But I will tell you that grist mill photo is probably one of my favorite photos of all time (even if I didn't take it). Somewhere I do have a copy of it, whether Jack sent to me or I copied from here Problem is the photo is so perfect I never wanted to challenge Mother Nature and Jack's photography skills, knew no matter how hard I worked on it, my painting would never hold a candle to the photo. He generously offered to allow me to use it to paint from, but I never had the courage to try.
Patricia, I remember when Jack showed us his neat office space & the baskets he used to organize. I think about it every time I have to dig through my jumble of stuff. Like you, I've been using a kitchen table & chair for my computer for years but since taking over my husband's computer & his "for real" computer desk, I've managed to make it a sloppy mess, little notes & stuff all over. Such is life. Yours looks like you have a plan, at least... good work!
I have a set of keys for an antique oak dining room buffet.... wood on the main drawer is well over an inch thick, other drawers & doors not so thick so reason for different size keys. BUT, I didn't get the keys cleaned, photographed & posted. Love all the pics of keys everyone posted. :thumbup:
Please, you can still post your keys, I am curious! Topics here don't get closed.
Sorry, no key photo. Have one key, not unusual, do not know what it is for, have tried to identify. Keep it just in case.
Bubble how about your starting another request.
I'm not Bubbles, but I'll make a suggestion.
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/96-250817125908.jpeg)
Show me more photos of umbrellas.
Our son gave me this umbrella several years ago, but it is so pretty I always use an older one. ;)
Jean, that is a pretty one. I thought I gave the pretty ones to my daughter. I missed this one. I would never carry it. I have a large black pop up one, not pretty but covers me. :) Lets see some more!
[attachimg=1]
Beach umbrella
[attachimg=1]
More umbrellas please....
or my next suggestion: Give a photo of a car number plate
Three Umbrellas, The one on the left has white dots on black, the one on the right is full black and the one in the forefront is blue plaid. I also have one small collapsable black purse size and a bright red one somewhere said the magpie, (See anything bright & shiny, must have! :) .)
[attachimg=1]
Show me a slightly worn vegetable like my yam.
[attachimg=1]
Pat a good one, looks like you can plant it!
Did not want to post my license plate. Came out of my favorite pub, after a few Gin and Tonic, came across this in the parking lot. Like the plate but removed the number.
[attachimg=1]
Jack wv...
...very wise not to publish your licence plate number...Yes when we put ourselves behind that wheel, we need to place our trust in God...and of course we do...
Here is one I saw when in NC
[attachimg=1]
That is a beautiful Brolly Jean. All I have are sport ones.
Now I don't think you can order special License plates now in Illinois. I use to like to read them. I think people started going crazy. Rude things on them and so Gov. decided to stop making them. Sort of like the reazon bumper stickers went out. Use to really be some wild one. Remember the ones they had in the Gas Station gift shops.
Michigan still has vanity plates but the State edits the request very carefully. I certainly would not get a plate with my name or initials as some people do.
Mary Ann
The Organist at our church has a plate that reads

On a Volkswagen.........known as a Bug in the U.S.
Of all the cars I have had over the years, my favorite was a 1957 green "Bug" :).
Don, that's a good one.
I have had 4 BUGS and also a VW Bus. Loved them. Would make it may last new car if they were still importing them from Germany. They don't. Some are make in Mexico but not good.
I do miss seeing the funny license plates. Even the serious ones, some very clever. Always people coming along to ruin things.. Things like. UP YOURS!
Don't know how that got through. Freedom of speech I guess.
What are we looking for now?
Slightly used vegetables
HUH? That doesn't sound very appetizing! :o
Jeanne Lee, agree, I toss mine out. Nothing to take a photo of. Pat how about another request.
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/96-010917111516.jpeg)
Show me a photo of a lamp
I've just about given up on tomatoes this year. Next year I am growing my own.
Jean, I like tomatoes cooked, but not raw, even in a salad.
Did not have to go far for a photo of a lamp. I keep this little emergency lamp handy. It does not have batteries, just crank the top and ready to go.
Lets stay with your request for a real lamp :)

Show me some embroidery, or lace...
[attachimg=1]
I used to embroider bookmarks
here is a lacy table cloth I knitted on 8 needles long ago
[attachimg=1]
let's see more crafts
Bubble, I love your tablecloth.
Years ago, I inherited my aunt's 8 foot by 5 foot dining room table and buffet and lace tablecloth she crocheted to fit it.
My daughter has taught herself how to knit, crochet, counted cross-stitch, embroidery with those "How to Teach Yourself to Knit (or crochet, embroidery, cross-stitch, quilt) In A Weekend". She now pretty much sticks to knitting.
Mary
Again. Wish I could take photo's could have posted on most of the past requests. Those table cloths are so beautiful. My mother could do that work. I never could do the lace type crochet.
Now my friend who is in Belgium she sent me some Lace work than she had started to do at the age of 8. I have watched them do that and unbelievable how they learn to move those spindles around. See ladies doing it up into their 80s and fingers so crooked.
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/96-040917115027.jpeg)
Show me a photo of some type of transportation
I have crocheted more afghans than I want to remember. For many years I made crocheted baby afghans and baby sets and then I discovered the computer!
Jean, like you, I have crocheted more afghans than I can remember. I also crocheted many doilies, knit several sweaters from kits when they were popular (still have many directions for them, too), did a lot of counted cross stitch (mostly genealogy samplers) and as you did, I discovered the computer.. I don't know the last time I did any fancywork.

river crossing on "ferry"
More transportation please!
I love the look back in time, Bubbles.
Bubble, a little later in time. The Sistersville Ferry, still in operation on the river south of us.
Let's have more transportation.
[attachimg=1]
I have been on similar ferries, more like Jack's picture, but very primitive. A ferry at Ironton MI holds only six cars so is busy all summer long.

Red Ford
I don't know what kind of car it was, but I did ride in a rumble seat more than once. That's a great looking car, Jean.
Mary Ann
Jean the same as Mary Ann. Years ago rode in my uncles rumble seat, what a thrill back then.
Like this subject so lets keep with it. Here is a photo of The American Queen docked in Wheeling and on the way to Pittsburgh.
[attachimg=1]
Riding in a rumble seat sounds like fun, Mary Ann. We saw that Ford at an antique car show in Ocala.
Jack, is that riverboat called a paddlewheeler? I've never been on one of those either. :(.
hitchhiker? 1958
[attachimg=1]
vespa 1965
[attachimg=1]
Jean yes that is a paddlewheeler. I was never on a cruise but have ridden several small ones in Pittsburgh.
Bubble you have so many great old photos, they are treasures.
When I was a teen, I would hike about 4 miles to our local watering hole, Lower Falls Beach. My Dad had been a lifeguard there when he was a teen. I earned a pass to the beach by cleaning out the locker rooms before Memorial Day. It was a tough and dirty job, but I was then able to walk out to Lower Falls in about 45 minutes and then swim until 5:00 in the afternoon, in time to get home for supper (and my nightly dishwashing chore!).
Bubbles hitch hiker reminded me of those hikes!

Lots of different types transportation! Great photos Bubbles!
Yes Bubble great photos. Sue I would guess you were talking about your Southern WV days.
I did my share... I also want to see yours!
BTW that Santa is in Rome and is not Don! lol
In the early 40's very few had autos. We traveled around the Pittsburgh Area in Trolleys. Here are two photos. The first is one I would have rode back then. The wire in the front was to an arm holding up the electric wire to a line running above the street. The second photo is of the inside of the trolley. In many areas there was only one track and when the operator reached the end of the line he would lower the arm and then walk to the other end and lift another. He would pull up the controls to take them to the other end. He then walked along the cane seats, you can see the handles. He would then switch the back of all the seats. Some would ride backwords but I could not handle.
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
We had electric "street cars" (we called them) when I was very young. One Halloween I went Trick or Treat with an older group and they waxed the tracks and then would run out of sight to watch the street car go sliding pass the stop. We all got a big laugh but imagine the street car conductor was not too happy.
Jean, we called ours street cars too. The end of the line was a mile from home, so Dad would take Mother and me to the end of the line so we could go downtown to shop, no neighborhood strip malls in those days. Our street cars were not as fancy as Jack's trolleys. Eventually, the city replaced the street cars with buses that also ended their run a mile from home. But progress took over and the buses first were about four blocks from home, then two. I used to run to catch the bus to go to work and the bus driver expected me, so usually waited for me to round the corner and go down the hill to the bus. There were several "regulars" and we'd all chat until the bus was too full to converse. The buses still run on the same routes after all these years. At first during rush hour, they ran every 10 minutes but by the time I quit taking the bus rush hour buses ran more like 15-20 minutes.
Mary Ann
Loving all the old photo's. Feeling a little sad seeing all the things that have now past. I miss some of the old ways. Transportation on the old buses. Trams etc. Steam Trains. Always enjoyed being pulled across the rivers on the ferries. Also Hiking. Loved doing that for miles and miles over the weekend. Picnicing. The young don't seem to do any of than anymore. No more liking a boy friend (or girl). Making a picnic basket and taking a good walk. Then coming back in time to have Tea with one or others family. Them giving you a good luck over. Always knew if the person liked you if they took you to do that.
I think that the Automobile ruined everything.
This is likely one of the trolleys I rode. The #1 ran pased where I lived. At another time I rode the #2 trolley.
[attachimg=1]
This pic is right in the middle of "Down Town". Too bad the camera didn't (couldn't) do a panorama.
Here's the other one ( The #2 Route) that I rode in the late 40's. This is the end of the line where the conductor would take the steps Jack mentioned to go back in the other direction. As kids we would help by changing the trolley and reversing the seats. We learned where to push with our foot to open the door at the other end. "The End" (of the line) as we called it was about a mile from where we lived --- as short run.
[attachimg=1]
One more. The 1947 snow storm. Most of the trolleys got bogged down. I saw one where the motor started burning from trying too hard.
[attachimg=1]
All that snow! Are these trolleys on rails with metal wheels, or normal tires? Electricity does not get affected with all that dampness???
The cable cars in San Francisco get turned around for the return trip. It sounds an easier way. No need to move the seats!
Rick great memories. Recall several times young men would pull the cable down and disconnect the motor. The operator had to go out to reset. Remember one snow storm when, with several feet of snow, nothing was moving till the snow plows cleared where possible.
Bubble ours ran on rails with metal wheels but in Cleveland they had them on tires and were able to pull over to the curb.
Rick, I remember that snow storm during Christmas time. I was stationed at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey. I got to go out and shovel snow all day.

Don't think I would ever have had a chance to ride in something like this. Way above my pay grade. ;)
Rammel, love those old photos, especially the one with all the snow.
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/96-060917114806.jpeg)
This is more my style. ;)
I'm enjoying these various methods of transportation! All such beautiful clear photos. I'd like to add my two cents worth, but I've been unable to post any pictures here since I can no longer do it through Photobucket. :-[
Jack, you're right about that being in my southern West Virginia days. We lived in St. Albans, about 12 miles from Charleston. It was a community of about 15,000 and most of those still working were employees of Carbide or DuPont factories in or near Charleston. Others, like my Grandma, were still working or beginning to be retired. She was the assistant Post Master in St. Albans when I was a young girl and then a teen.
Our home was on the Coal River near the mouth where it flowed into the Kanawha--before the Kanawha merged with the Ohio River, down around Huntington, I think.
Sue
Marilyne, I've been putting mine into the gallery. Jeanne Lee can give you the proper instructions for that. Also Jack put some instructions on how to attach a photo directly from your computer after you have made them the proper size (640 on longest side and not more than 160 Kb).
send them to me, Marilyn
Sue I recall you were from St Albans. I had looked up the beach you mentioned, but was only able to find the coal river. Interesting that the coal river flowed into the Kanawha that flowed north to the Ohio river flowing south.
Jack, I didn't realize the Kanawha flowed north to the Ohio. The Coal River near our house, flowed into the Kanawha and then went past our house to Huntington where I think the Kanawha joined the Ohio about at the Kentucky border--but it was so long ago that my memory doesn't "remember" quite how things were!

All that snow! Are these trolleys on rails with metal wheels, or normal tires? Electricity does not get affected with all that dampness???
......
They were metal wheels on metal tracks. The track became part of the electric circuit - no danger to anyone. The trolley sitting there in the snow had probably been there for a couple of days. There were work trolleys with large round (probably two foot diameter or a bit bigger) rotating brushes in front. They were slanted as snow plows are. You didn't want one of those to go past you as you were driving. I wish I had a pic of one. They were used to keep the tracks clear of snow. The top of tracks were even with the road, with a recess next to them for the flange of the wheel. Rough on bicycles. I sort of miss them all :-(
I am posting a photo of my Jessie and Zoe crossing the Ohio river on a ferry, and a view of the river flowing from the north. [attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
This is just a screen shot of how I post photos.
[attachimg=1]
Jack - Thanks so much for going to all that trouble to help me! I really appreciate it.
My screen looks different from the one you showed. Do you think it's because I have a Mac, and everyone else has a PC?
When I click on Attachments, a box comes up that says, "Choose File", from my desktop. Then when I choose and click the photo from my desktop, nothing happens?
I'm going to try to put my photos in the Gallery, and hope that will work for me.
Marilyne, sorry it did not work out. I took a look on my iPad and the screen was the same as on my computer. Hope you can make use of the Gallery.
Marilyn, do NOT click on the photo but put the name of the photo in the window opened that has been directed to desktop. After that click on the window next to in-line-full-size.
Guess we are still on Transportation. This is a photo of my Co-pilot. For the record she has never been up front, but stays in the back. Here we were parked and waiting for my son. She had to take a look.
[attachimg=1]
what car do you have Jack? Looks like a Honda. They are very popular here.
FlaJean your posh 'carosse' is the Queen's one?
Bubble, yes, good eye. It is a Honda HRV (a small CRV)
Jean that carriage is really above our grade :) May have a photo or video of one of our local horse drawn ones.
Was thinking of another photo then recalled this one. It is of my uncle John, taken prior to his going into the army. He died 10/13/1918 in the last battle of WW1
[attachimg=2]
Bubbles, I took that picture at The Grand Oaks Carriage Museum. It is one of the world's largest private collections of carriages and equine artifacts. I did two videos a couple of years ago showing the many different carriages that have been restored. A man in Ocala created the horses and they look so real. A wonderful gem of a museum that is in Marion County, FL.
Jack, nice photo of a bygone era.
Thanks for the info Jean. I would have loved to visit that.
Jack, we seem to have exhausted transportation (no submarines?), so maybe you have a suggestion for next?
How about show me a photo of the seasons, need not be your current season.
I found a last one for transportation: dangerous crossing!

Soon will be fall here and lots of color. The problem is that it is followed by winter. For winter I still take the occasional walk. This was several years ago. Sorry to say the two trees on the left were cut down this year, so things will not look the same along the path.

Jean, a nice scene. Pray you are missed by the storm, really a monster.
[attachimg=1]
COLD CLOTHESLINES
Don that's a wild shot. Appears a good wet snow and little wind.
Brrrrrrrrr That looks cold and unreal.
Is that a frozen cactus standing between the two doors?
That is one COLD looking scene.
We have not had a good snow storm for past 4 years. Love to see the first one but then no more. Don't have anyone to take care of moving it.
It is the Ice storms I hate. The trees really like nice then but also that is when they come crashing down.
bubble.
It is a cactus but it is a plastic light up Arizona 'xmas tree'.
Thanks! I was worrying about a poor plant :)
Hot one today, stopped the yard work. It has been a while since a request in here so how about
Show me something old but not antique (not people :D)
Here is a Radio record player we purchased April 1970, still works but in a corner gathering dust (I missed a bit)
[attachimg=1]
Old for me: my parent's store in Congo- It does not exist any more. That is me in the front, as a teenager.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Bubble - what interesting photos! What happened to your parent's store? Is the building still standing, or don't you know?
No idea... It did suffer some damage during the independence war when they sold it, but that is years ago.
Not an antique but getting close!

Bubble an interesting piece of history.
Jean a beautiful lamp.

This is a camphor chest which I won in a raffle by the Red Cross in 1938. Think this would have been my first entry into gambling. Except for the War years. Has always been by my side.
Still has inside the smell of camphor.
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, I like that little chest. Recall my mother would use camphor oil back in the 1930's. Do not recall using it later, know it is still available, but no idea of the smell.
Jack. that was June's photo, I just posted for her.
June, that is a Chinese chest! It reminded me of my mum's old Chinese furniture. Pity, I could not find photos of her 2 camphor chests.
Old Chinese furniture, and a close-up of the doors.

June, sorry. 87 and just do not pay attention. :)
Bubble that is a pretty piece of furniture.

My recall of camphor would be a thing called "Camphor Ice". It was used on us kids for chapped lips in the winter. It came in a tube like Chap Stick only much bigger - probably about 3/4: x 3 to 4" in a metal tube with a metal cap.
I remember camphor oil rubbed on chest for a bad cold. That was in the war's year, way way back!
I think there is still some in Vicks - I don't have any here to check.
Next request:
Show me a prayer book.
I'm "borrowing" this from Bubble's collection. A book of prayers for every day of the year. Note that is is Hebrew/ French translation.

Why don't you since you posted last?
show me a photo of you as a little child.........

show me more photos of you as a little child.........
Bubble, no photos of myself as a child. We never had a camera. I got one when I married so here is a photo of my son and daughter.
Lets have more childrens photos.

What a fun photo Jean!
Jean, what a cute little boy. He should love the picture when he's much older and I know his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents will.
Bubble, your cousin's grandson is a little cutie, too.
Mary Ann
Such cute pictures everyone.
Mary Ann, I noticed several people on the beach. Someone was riding the waves. Looked like he had some help with one of those kite things. Another hurricane heading this way. Looks like we will only get some rain and wind, but we brought in our chairs and a few flower pots.
Keep the young photos coming. This is an old one of my only grandchild (she still laughs when I tell her she is my favorite) She is now 23 and with 3 engineers titles. Working in the auto industry. Still a Pittsburgh Steeler Fan.
[attachimg=1]
Jack, she's a beauty then and I'm sure now. I know you are proud of her achievements and work in the auto industry. (how about a photo of now?)
Jean, your grandson is adorable--and looks as if he's pretty smart, too!
Bubble, your cousin's grandson looks as if he's discovered a rare treasure. What a cutie!
Sue
Sue thanks, but avoid current family photos.
Jack, I can understand your reluctance to show current photos, especially of your granddaughter who would appreciate her privacy. My sons don't like me to show their photos either!
Sue
Jack wv...
...we are not supposed to have " favourites " but I, - we, shall make an exception for you.... ;D ;)
I'll propose a new one.
Show me a tree
Bubble thanks for the suggestion. Waiting for my walk and just looked in. Have many on the machine, but liked this one. On the walk path and over the years bent over from the wind. Looks like it has a question.
[attachimg=1]
Lets have some more trees.[/
What a special tree Jack. I hope we get lots of response. I love trees.
Now Bubble you asked for "a tree" I am posting an earlier fall photo of "trees" I then used a free app on windows 10 - Selektiv light - with it you change the photo to black and white and then "paint" the portion you want to add light to. Not into photoshop etc, found this interesting and easy to do. (the full color one is obviously better)
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
[attachimg=1]
This one started here as a seedling. This is May of 2013. It's now somewhat bigger and just yesterday I thought that I should get another pic of it.
Rick what type of tree is that, it is beautiful. Did you shape it? Or does it shape itself?
I have two Red Oaks that I call my squirrel trees, they planted the acorns and I moved them where I wanted them.

It's known here as red maple. Yes, I did shape it. I pulled up several sprouting "polly noses" from the cemetery where our family plot is. Managed to get about four of them to live when I brought them home. This is the only survivor. When it was small I would trim it each spring. Now it is too tall to do a decent job of trimming/shaping so I'm just letting it go. When I was trimming it I had some neighbors tell me I couldn't do that - but I did. It has a couple of places where a branch broke out and then joined in on another branch. Maybe when the leaves fall I'll try for a pic of the odd places.

Beautiful trees and quite a variety. Here are two Fringe Trees, also called Grancy Grey Beards. Beautiful fringe in the spring then all green.
[attachimg=1]
Mary and Hal, I have no idea: I don't use these touch devices, I am totally ignorant on how to make them obey me :)
Why not post the question in the computers discussion? in 'Tablets, Pads, Smart Phones'
Jeanne, that is a REAL Christmas tree! Super!
Jack, these fringes look beautifully delicate. I wonder if they don't cause pollen allergies.
Ring Palm Tree

Bubble, I moved the questions, mine and Mary's over to the right place. Thanks
Love the pictures.
I would think it it's no different than posting pictures taken with a regular camera.
I seldom use my iPad Air. I just opened it went to this site and discussion. Went to post and typed this message, I did use a Bluetooth keyboard.
I've been gone from S&F for so long, I can't remember how to upload photos from my computer. I've been looking for directions, but haven't found them yet. And do your photos have to be in your gallery to post them here? Thanks
Nita I have stopped using Photobucket, and never had luck with the Gallery. I now find it easy (after several attempts) to simply use the attachment feature at the foot of the post.
You have to be sure to resize your photo to 640 pixel length and height. I use
http://www.shrinkpictures.com/
You then do your post and at the foot of the box click on +attachments and other options. It opens a box where you insert a photo from your computer. On the right click the down arrow and pick "inline full size image" You might try that, then below the attachment you will see (more attachments) you then can pick one additional photo and again select "inline full size image" You then post.
I have been resizing my photos, posting the small one then delete the small one from my computer, it does not remove it from the post.
It took me awhile but I finally figured how to sent myself an email of the picture from the Iphone. :idiot2: Now what do I do to get it here?
Thanks.
Mary
Mary, as Jack explained:
You do your post and then at the foot of the box click on +attachments and other options. It opens a box where you insert a photo from your computer. On the right click the down arrow and pick "inline full size image". then save.
BUT, DOESN’T THE PHOTO HAVE TO BE RESIZED TO 640K ON LARGEST SIDE AND BE 160 OR LESS KB? Or have the instructions changed?
Resizing is most trouble, I think.
Will get back to show me a photo of and make it photos of shrinking pictures. :) I did include trees.
Using shrink picture you will note on the first photo that I have chosen my photo and dropped down to line 2 and on custom inserted the 640 size limit. I then usually select good copy and then hit the resize button, wait a few seconds and the 2nd screen comes up.
You will notice on the second photo that the size is now 640 and only 45 kb. If the photo comes up with over 140 kb, hit the return arrow and pick good instead of best, you should be under the 140 (I keep 140 as max) You then right click and pick save as to put it on your computer. This reduced one is for posting.
Just suggest testing, you can always delete a post.
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
Jack, are you asking people to download "shrinkpicture" and apply it to a photo?
Jeanne here again is the address. http://www.shrinkpictures.com/
They do it on line. Believe there are apps that do it but the site is so easy to use and in checking it has good safety ratings. They do not keep the photos. If you have not used, give it a try, I know you have a good handle on things.
A great collection of trees and all so very different.
Jack, OK I'm paranoid about cyber risks. But I would not advise anyone to use an application on line. If you're comfortable with it, that's fine, and if you want to explain it to people and anyone is interested in using it that's fine, too. But maybe just a word of caution.
Jack, I was afraid posting from my computer could lead people back to my computer (okay, I don't understand how things work :crazy2: ) .... but did not think about deleting the photo after posting. Good point! When I want to find a photo like that I put it on my desk top because it isn't as cluttered as other places (like Documents or Pictures). I still don't have CO photos off the camera, got to stay home, huh?
Hi to all.... thanks for keeping the place running. I do use that link from Jack since my Paint Shop Pro won't open & the new editions I have of PSP are over my head.
Jeanne Lee, I'm not sure about how it works but I didn't have to do anything but upload a photo & let them resize & then accept the smaller size back to download so I could post it from my desk top. Most of the time I put them in the Gallery & post from there. Is that what you mean???
Jeanne, this procedure seems quite safe. Several times I even scanned - with an anti-virus or defender - the resized downloaded on desktop picture and it has always been clean and can then be posted on S&F.
[attachimg=1]
Show us more trees!
Bubble, got to tell you that when I got back from my trip to MO my bougainvillea had a new stem of blooms of the strangest almost coral color. So far I have not been able to trace the blooms/blossoms back to a separate plant, but I'm sure there is another root. I did get a photo but have daughter coming over this morning (in from St.Louis) and need to get out & unlock gates for the lawn guys to mow, hopefully for the last time this summer). If I wasn't so lazy I would mow myself, but that "ain't gonna happen".
What a neat tree..... I'll have to dig out the one down by the river that has wisteria growing to the top. The ropes of wisteria are so big now it will probably kill the tree (a scrub elm)... quite a sight.
I sure wish you could share a shoot from the wisteria with me. I am dieing to have one and I read they can grow in pots.
I think I'll just use Paint Shop to resize and then keep a folder of resized pics. Wouldn't that be just as easy for those who use it?
both are just as easy Nitah. It also depend if you have the PSP open or not!
ok...practicing.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
oops...didn't want two.
This is a very old Banyon tree at Cypress Gardens (now a part of LegoLand) in Orlando.
[attachimg=1]
wow! looks like a centenary!
Here is a "Tree House" on the ground in CO National Forest. It had quite a few holes where birds had lived when it stood tall, but I could not get good detail showing more than this one.
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/58-121017203026.jpeg)
what an interesting trunk, full details perfectly clear on your picture. One can almost feel its texture.
Do you know what kind of bird would nest in it?
Is that a face carved in it, just above the hole.
Hal, don't think we found any human work on the tree but lots of former holes where birds or other critters had lived. My son wished he had a chain saw to bring home a big section of the tree to preserve & use as a "decoration", but knew his wife wouldn't be pleased. He had a small hand saw to cut "walking sticks" that we carve when sitting around the camp site.... so much dead wood in the forest we always find interesting pieces to work with.
Bubble, we could not figure what birds would have made so many holes in one tree.
I haven't seen any "Show me a picture of..." since the tree one.
So....I have been seeing so many posts referring to pets...and I would love to see yours. So....show me a photo of pets. :)
I have two more trees to show until we go to the next topic. One is a palm tree by the beach: interesting criss-cross on the trunk
[attachimg=1]
The second is a tree hollowed when the lighting hit it. After twenty years, one still gets black charcoal on the hands when touching it.

My Jessie and Zoe, now just pleasant memories, and Mimi my happy 8 year old.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Jack, I noticed that Mimi has more white in her coat. I love the way you framed them.
Thank you for the pet pictures. I'm sitting here smiling. They make me happy.
Jazz and Scruffy you are cute as can be. And Mimi, you are beautiful. :smitten:
Bubble, I have a cat, but she won't come in the house. She was a "barn cat" when we got her, and has lived her years in the garage and in the attic of the garage. I named her Shadow, because she seems to be always just out of reach. When my Rocko died recently, she came in the house twice....walked around looking, and won't come in again. She's a sweetie, but hard to get close to her. The only time she lets me touch her is when I feed her. Very independent, that Shadow girl.
Nita, keep the camera or iPhone handy, would like to see Shadow.
Jean I play with frames/mats, but hang very few photos on my walls.
Here are a tree and a pet.
[attachimg=1]
:)
:) :)
Just thinking, Jack..... how I would love to have one of Mimi's babies. That is a gorgeous shot of her, bet her original owner would love to see it & maybe even use it in their brochure if they still have one of her pups for breeding. Every one of your girls have had such different personalities, for sure, all winners (even Zoe with her cone dog run).
Jean, Scruffy & Tazz look like they are ready to sing, what a pair! Cute as can be.
Bubble, Tiggy looks very content sleeping, so innocent. I see he/she is wearing a collar in that one photo. I've never put one on these for fear they will get tangled in the trees. Years ago, before this house, a neighbor's cat was high in our tree, after a bird nest. I yelled & threw something at it... scared it so bad in it's rush to get down the collar caught & it managed to slip out of it & that collar stayed there until we moved (to haunt me). I was so afraid it would strangle that cat I was ready to climb the tree to rescue. I will dig out the SD card that holds photos of my kids & their mother as babies.... and today, 7+ years later.
Loving the pet pics!
Shirley, Mimi had 17 pups, but that was 3 or 4 years ago, and all found homes. Several have posted and the breeder routinely gets photos of her. Today I spent almost half an hour with a couple that lost their 8 year old golden just two weeks ago. They said she looked just like Mimi. I gave them loads of time, know how they felt. Mimi would have stayed for an hour, she never tires of getting attention.
Jack, I don't know how many babies most dogs have when kept by breeders, but that isn't a lot so maybe not a lot of years? She is such a sweet dog and know she has a wonderful life with you, not everyone understands Goldens like you do. Bet that couple is still talking about you & Mimi tonight. :smitten:
Here is Shadow a few years back. AND....she actually came in the house last night. Peeked through the doggie door and then stepped on in. She was very cautious, but came to where I was sitting. I dropped my arm and she rubbed herself on me for quite awhile. :) :) Then when I got up...she headed out to her garage "apartment". Though she and Rocko were friendly, and would greet nose to nose, maybe she felt inside was his domain.
[attachimg=1]
and here are my boys...Ty and Rocko. I took a snapshot of them and liked it so much, I played with it to enhance. Now I'm glad I did. I really like this, as it shows their personalities.
[attachimg=1]
Ty, in the back, was always the quiet leader...a huge heart and always put his humans first. His gift was healing. He just knew when someone needed him, and he'd go sit by them if he thought it was ok..then gently lay his head on them, and just be there. Ty was an old soul...a big dog in his little body. When he got sick, he tried to comfort me. Making the decision to release him was one of the hardest things I've ever done. If you only have one dog who is soul connected to you, he was mine. I lost him in 2015 to hemolytic anemia.
Rocko....my little "never grow up" kid. His personality was the opposite of his brother. For Rocko...it was all about Rocko. He wasn't brave like Ty, but tried to pretend he was. He never liked riding in the car. He loved going to the fence and barking at the neighbor's big dog...then running back in the house. Though they were the same age, he was always my baby. He was who he was. :smitten: I had to let him go September 13 of this year....two days before his 13th birthday. He had congestive heart failure.
Nita, a lovely photo of Ty and Rocko, I understand how you must feel about them, you miss them so much since they brought such joy to your life.
Beautiful photo of Shadow, good to hear she will now want to be petted.
Nita, that was such a sweet picture of the little dogs. Nice photo of Shadow with the toy.
Oh, Nita, what great descriptions of your furbabies. Shadow will win you over, maybe already has sensed you need her and willing to take care of you like your pups did. In my world I am convinced all animals & even birds that connect with humans, understand the humans that really care for them.
I so agree, Shirley. Animals are amazing in their understanding. They instinctively know, as you said. And they are good at reading who is safe and who isn't.
Shadow wouldn't come in today, but rubbed up against me when I fed her tonight. I think she wanted me to visit her in her digs. So I did.
Show me a photo of a bridge.
Two photos taken on the campus of James Madison Univ. in Harrisonburg Va.

That was two views of the same little bridge. Had problem posting. Wanted to request more photos of bridges.
The first one with the reflection of purple is beautiful!
Bubble thanks. For the record I do not live on the computer, but it is always on. This morning I have mowed the lawn, done two loads of clothes, and washed the dishes (not enough to ever use the dish washer) I did a crop and a little adjustment to show that reflection you mentioned, and the ducks.

Jack, I never tire of looking at the picture of the bridge at JM college. In fact, I have it as my desktop right now.
When my niece was going there to school, I had told her mother to look it up when they went down to visit. And, I finally remembered to ask her about it, and she said that they did find the place and agreed with it being so beautiful. My niece has since graduated, so those trips down to see her are no more.
Just love seeing all the pictures that are posted here all the time.
Joy
Nita, we have quite a few parks in my area, but I seldom visit them, stay close to the best of them all Oglebay, just minutes from my home..
Joy it has been 2 years since I have been to that spot in Harrisonburg Va. Have just not had the urge for a 5 to 6 hour drive, and my daughter prefers to come up to visit.
Quite a few interesting bridges posted.
Old suspension bridge on original National Road. Still in use. As viewed from the Wheeling river bank.
[attachimg=1]
Love all the bridges.... and Jack, at first glance I didn't think you posted that one & I was rocking in my seat thinking, "that is Jack's bridge!" Reading on & back, I see it was. :-[ They are all so different, so I got on the old Vista computer & want to show you one taken by my brother right after WWII. He was so happy to be out of the German prisoner of war camp, Mother was feeding him like he hadn't had anything to eat (and he had little for 9 months). He was spending his days taking me & all other kids he could gather up, just to share his joy of freedom.

Shirley, love that photo, and remember a group of them that you had and were in a slideshow, but no longer have, do you?
Jack, I'm not sure where I posted that slide show... yes, all those photos of the bridge. Do you happen to remember what we were using about that time? I do have a list of passwords for various sites but not sure I have a copy on a thumb drive or CD. I know one place we used to post from closed. I did manage to resize this photo using the newer version of PSP.... but took long time!
Shirley I will email you tonight.
Bridge in Canada
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, that is a restful scene, with the little boy feeding the geese.
Bubble. That is an unusual bridge but easy on the eye. A great picture.
I like that scene, Bubble. Nice shot.
Yes, a peaceful place and Aviv enjoyed feeding the ducks. He even tried to call them in English: come, come! Because of course, being Canadian they would speak "Canady" (sic) and not Hebrew lol
Another bridge, know Sue is familiar with it. This is the New River Gorge Bridge in southern WV. It is 800 feet above the river and they have an event annually with people jumping from it. I do not look down when driving across it, took this from a park nearby.
[attachimg=1]
That is a very aesthetic construction, Jack.
Jack, a few years ago I was on a tour in British Columbia where we took lifts up the side of the mountain for a certain distance, then got in a gondola and went from one peak to another. We were way far above ground.
I thought of this trip when you mentioned not looking down on the New River Bridge. I remember you've written about that before.
Pretty whitecaps on Lake Michigan this morning. Not as many as yesterday, but still quite a few.

I doubt I could drive over that bridge. Do the jumpers get hurt?
Here is a link to the New River Gorge Bridge. Don't think I would want to take the tour !!! Looks like a neat thing to do if you have the nerve !
LOL
Reminds me of the bridge walk in Sydney Australia. My son has done that.
http://www.bridgewalk.com/
Joy
Rick they are doing base jumping on Bridge Day, and leap from the bridge with a parachute. Understand there have been a few deaths, over a period of years.
Joy I do not even like to watch the video. If I woke up and was out there I would be added to the list of fatalities. :)
As long as there are railings, I'd take the walk. The scenery is wonderful. However, I would not jump. I'm not that venturesome!
I will say at my present age, I would not take the walk because I can't walk far, but when I was younger, if I had the chance, I would have done it.
Mary Ann
If I could walk further than the mailbox and back, I would definitely do it and would drive across it now. I have never been afraid of heights.
Another thing I have always wanted to do was take the Hualapai Indian tribe sky walk over the Grand Canyon :).
Mary
I have visited the New River Gorge Bridge twice. The first time was a car trip from Alabama through the southeast to my sister's home in Charleston (WVa). Charlie and I had gone to an Elderhostel in Charlottesville, VA and toured lots of Civil War sites in North Carolina and Virginia. We stayed at a state park hotel with views of the bridge several nights. The New River Gorge is beautiful--even the section going into Charleston (WVa), although not as spectacular there. The second time I visited there, my high school 60th reunion was held at a state park in that area--can't remember which one. West Virginia has many lovely scenic areas and parks.
The only part of WVa that I have not visited is in the northern pan handle and WVU at Morgantown. I grew up in the Kanawha valley in a small town, St. Albans, although I spent junior high and college years in Columbia, SC, where I attend the U. of South Carolina and married my late husband the day after graduation.
Sue
P.S., when I was a young girl, the state song was not "Almost Heaven, West Virginia" by John Denver! I think it is now used as the state son, but Jack will know. I forget the name, but we sang the chorus with gusto--"oh the hills, beautiful hills, how I love those West Virginia hills". I still do!
Sue, I do not remember my days in WVa because we came to Michigan when I was 16 months old. In 1950 my dad and I drove to Wellsburg and I saw the house where I was born and met some of the people Dad taught with at the high school. I remember driving on a road called a Pike and we came to a tunnel so we had to honk the horn to warn a car that might be at the other end. In other years I took a couple of tours that went through WVa and I remember the dogwood trees in the wooded areas. I think we did not get in the area of the New River however, I remember we stopped at Charleston on one trip. I know I won't get back there now, but I do have some memories.
I remember the times you, Jack and I took over the WVa folder in Senior Net.
Mary Ann
Here is a photo taken today of a little bridge on the walk path. Think I might risk jumping off of it. ;) Took a 2nd photo of my companion.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Mimi makes an even prettier picture.
This old bridge was located in Bridge, Oregon, where I was raised, went to school and enjoyed country. :) I walked over this bridge, hung out on this bridge, later drove over this bridge. That was our swimming hole down below. Most kids, and adults, could be found at this hole in the summer, or on the bridge looking out the "window" to see who all was there before you decided if you wanted to go down. :)
[attachimg=1]
I haven't figured out how to post the pic full size instead of a clickable thumbnail.
Nita, next to the menu slot that tells you to browse for what you want to post there is another drop down menu with several choices. Default is "End of post expandable thumbnail". Scroll down and click on "inline full-size image".
I am glad we have this discussion opened (Thanks Jack for suggesting!). We have a look of such variety on same topic, it is very interesting.
Nita, lovely memory with that covered bridge, is it still there?
Bubble, the contests were not that active and we really do not compete. I like the idea of making a request. Do not know if we had this one, but how about Clouds, and for that matter Clouds and landscapes.
This photo is a panorama, it was a wide one but you get the idea.
[attachimg=1]
Good one!
But I don't have any clouds on file, I think.
Maybe tomorrow will be cloudy enough for a photo.
I love your panorama!
This is one of my favorite photos that I took at Tuscawilla Park in Ocala. The park is one of the few things I miss after moving.
[attachimg=1]
Jean I can understand why you miss it, pretty scene.
Beautiful cloud pictures. And I have always liked clouds. :)
Thanks, Jeanne. I did check that, but must have missed that option.
The view from my front porch. You can see a few clouds in front of the sunset sky colors.
[attachimg=1]
Beautiful. That looks like a very quiet street.
Jean, Bubble is right, nice place to call home..
I posted this cloud photo, taken when leaving the park. Liked it and have it on my desktop. Worked out well with all the shortcuts on the dark tree trunk.
[attachimg=1]
Sunrise photo. I notice many of my cloud/sky pictures have the same tree line. :) That's because they are all taken from my back yard, looking eastward. I need to get out more. :)
[attachimg=1]
Jack, that picture works perfect for your desktop. :)
Jean, I agree. Your photos look very peaceful. Is it nice in your neighborhood?
Nita that is a beautiful sky, and from your back yard, wonderful!
All the cloud photos are so pretty.
It is a quiet neighborhood even though it is a mixed neighborhood with many young families.
[attachimg=1]
Another ARIZONA sky..................
[attachimg=1]
Looks ominous but no trouble............
Donklan, the first looks like a giant sweep of the eraser.
The second reminds me of eyebrows with nose. Can you see the eye on the clear patch above the left side of the bridge?
Reading the clouds is fun.
Don that first photo shows a really unusual but interesting cloud formation. The second looks like smoke rising but guess it is just the separation of the lower white clouds.
The second one from living in "Tornado Alley", it looks like a tornado to me :).
Mary
Haha, Mary, you took the words right out of my mouth! ("and that isn't very sanitary", as Red Skelton used to say....) I've been to MO again for a family reunion, not too many of the older clan left and we are thrilled so many of the next generation came & some brought their young grands with them. I am one tired old lady, not from the trip or driving, but hauling stuff in & out of the RV. This time of year it's necessary to take all weather clothes, rain, maybe snow? or my worst fears, extreme hot weather. So far I have not had the pleasure of waking up to crispy, cold enough to see your breath temps.... not even in the high country of Colorado at night, so was seriously thinking about one more trip to Missouri after the first freeze.
I did not take one photo with my camera this trip. I did take some with the phone that I sent to my kids to let them see where I was. The campground was full, trees losing leaves but not much color except for the sumac & I am never sure which of the plants are the poison ones... I have a site bookmarked to show the different types but they look too much alike for me to be sure. Same with mushrooms & toadstools.
Love all the photos of the sunrises/sunsets, clouds & especially that lovable Mimi. I would love to post one of my view from inside the RV but cannot get it off the phone. I can send text with my phone & include the photo but still can't get it off the phone. Every time I make the attempt to research how to from this Alcatel -Tracfone ... I get side tracked.
Still have not fed myself or Mama Callie. They all slept outside last night & she likes to sleep later than Tom & Tiger. They were at the back door waiting for breakfast when I got up a couple hours ago.... they ate & wanted back out to lay in the sun. I have a routine Dr appointment this afternoon so a lazy morning for once.
I'll get back to playing with cameras, looks like a less than colorful fall this year but maybe we'll get some snow. Lots of years we have had snow or ice over Halloween & that isn't far off. Thanks for keeping the place alive, I am still catching up ... will get control one of these days. Shirley
By the way, anybody see Rick lately? He used to pop in & out but haven't seen a post in here from him for a long time.
Donklan, interesting cloud photos. The second one sure looked like a tornado coming.
Had almost an inch of rain yesterday, and more coming this afternoon. Never got to 60, but a bit of sunshine. Took two photos, one of a favorite old tree next to the mansion, and the other a shot from the golf course of a chapel in the distance, and a bit of color. (again with clouds)
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
Liked your photos, Jack. Monday night it rained all night but yesterday was beautiful and sunny and today the same. It’s still too early here for ny color.
I sure wish we had a "like" button. More beautiful photos.
Oh no NitaH, don't wish that: it is so much friendlier to read the comment or appreciation. :)
A reminder, we also have a card discussion for holidays and birthdays if you care to use it.
Nita, Bubble is right (always is) It is nice to read the comments. You can add a 8) (for cool) or a thumbs up :thumbup: Kidding but just pleased folks take the time to look and have never seen a negative comment in this discussion.
Jack I for one check here a couple of times a day and love the photo's but fail to tell the posters that many times. Some are real eye candy. And thanks to all of you.
Hal thanks, I read several discussions and never post, just look in.
Hal, have you enjoyed the Halloween cards? More coming for the next 4 days!
https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/index.php?topic=80.msg106393#msg106393 (https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/index.php?topic=80.msg106393#msg106393)
Bubble, love the cards. Usually go to my Granddaughters home and watch them give out candy, but since my surgery on my eye is Monday and Halloween is on Tuesday, not sure if I will make it. She has invited us and is ordering Pizza. Just have to see how I feel.
Hal, cataract? you will be OK the next day. You will just probably have to wear a patch or bandage on that eye and then drops 3 or 4 times a day. It is worth it!
Take a picture: patch and wizard hat? lol
Good Morning Everyone!
Cant sleep, again. So got up and turned on the computer
Bubble, the patch will come off the next day when i have a followup with the doctor. I am already using antibiotic drops, started yesterday.
it is cold here this morning. Heater has been on most of night and coming on pretty regularly.
Hope you all have a great day.
Hal, if cataracts you will feel like the doctor is a Wizard. Could not believe the immed. change when I had done.
Even removing one cataract, there is a definite change. I starting to wear glasses at 4. The next morning after the surgery, I was able to drive myself to the doctor without glasses.
Mary
Mary, about the same with me. Have one lazy eye, nothing helps. have worn glasses since 6. I drove to my daughters following Shirleys passing and had problems with night driving. Called the doctor and he removed the cataract in my good eye. When finished with the short procedure, I asked about precautions. He said lift nothing over 100 pounds today and from then on go on with my life. I was delighted with the results. Several years later he removed the cataract from my bad eye, it helps with peripheral vision.
Jack, at my last visit my eye doctor suggested I have my right eye done also. As soon as I get my oxygen supplier problem straightened out, that will be next on my agenda.
Mary
Jack and Mary, your comments sure make me more optimistic. I struggle to read the paper even with a magnification glass and I have to go into the drivers license office in January for an eye exam, which doctor told me no way could I pass right now, he didn't know after surgery. I will have both eyes done by the time I have to go in. My wife has had both eyes done and when she went in for her 85tg birthday exam they took her restrictions off her drivers license for glasses, she no longer has to have them on to drive.
I had cataract surgery on both eyes--a week apart as my opthalmalogist had a family trip planned soon after. He was taking his wife and daughters to Europe. Since then I only wear dime store readers if I'm reading fine print after dark--it's a fantastic thing to have your sight restored after years of blurry vision!
Sue
Hal, they took the restrictions off of my license also after having just one eye done. Because I have a lazy eye like Jack does, unfortunately I need glasses to read comfortably. The doctor told me there was a 50% chance of me needing reading glasses. I went to the Dollar Store and bought readers for practically every room in the house plus my purse. My sister has vision in both eyes, so when she had hers done, they put a distance lens in one eye and a closeup lens in the other. She doesn't need glasses at all.
Mary
Jack, WV is trying to stay in game.
Hal they made it exciting, but lost. Now Ohio State and Penn State.
Hal 15 seconds in and Penn State scored :thumbup: :thumbup:
We seem to have exhausted our views of clouds.
What about showing some food or beverage? I am sure there must be some good cooking or baking to tempt us :)
Bubble a good suggestion. Now if I can find something other than frozen or canned food. :)
You have a frozen photo? ;D
I think Jack must use some of my cooking secrets! I like Healthy Choice frozen meals--and eat about 3 or 4 them a week for lunch along with fresh fruit and/or a salad. In the evenings, I often make scrambled eggs or some other dish with eggs, like tuna salad made from scratch. Other times I boil rice and lightly fry fresh peppers and onions to put on the rice. I make lighter meals in the evening than at noon.
And on Fridays, my son Tim and I eat lunch out and then he takes me to Kroger for my weekly grocery shopping. He's the only one of my 3 sons who lives in Alabama. So he's pretty much stuck with me! He's been a big help since my fall last year. I'm still not cleared to drive.
Sue
If you are concerned about your kosher diet while in Israel you can be acomommodated at Macdonalds. The partition on the counter separates the kosher and non-kosher sections
[attachimg=1]
Don that is a great idea for McDonalds. I have not been there for 4 months. I am on Low Carb diet, lost 25 pounds but eating a few carbs now and just maintaining my weight. (still too heavy but decided to work on it) After the Holidays I may go on strict diet.
Sue and Bubble, I now have a NuWave hot air fryer and love it. Cook my steak, chicken, bacon and toss in some mushrooms. It will do much more but with my diet I am limited. Will work on a photo.
Don, I like the Hebrew National hot dogs. I figure they have better meat than the other winners.
Jack, my daughter used to make the best onions and mushrooms to put on a steak. I ask her they day when she was up if she still did and she said she hadnt made them in years since she went Vegan. I may disown her...
Hal, your daughter should be able to eat the onions and mushrooms even if she would not put them on a steak! She could make them as a favor to YOU!
Mary Ann
One of our adventures in food was when we visited an Arab restaurant and ordered one dessert and two forks. There ensued a bit of a power struggle when it came time to determine who would retain custody of that delightful pastry.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Don and Bubble, looks delicious. Who won?
Mary Ann
Bubble was probably worried about Don's beard and offered to eat it all.
ha ha , it would have been fun to see the beard dip and that especially that those tiny plastic spoons are so impractical...
A festive meal at home...
baked potatoes[attachimg=1]
green beans[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=1]
This is on the menu as Saint Peter's Fish, taken from the Sea Of Galillee. We know it as tilapia.
[attachimg=1]
Bubble and Don, some great looking food. I would only be able to show boxed or canned, so whipped this up for all. :thumbup:
[attachimg=1]
I wouldn't eat that; I'd preserve it! That is lovely.
Jack, I am licking my lips already! That is just too tempting!
I have nothing that somptuous, but we, I am good at baking challenging borekas.
[attachimg=1]
Here with eggplant, tomato, onion filling
Now Bubble and Don You know I did not make it, just another app, like this one with left over Halloween Pumpkins.
[attachimg=1]
You did make the picture, so that is that :)
All that delicious looking food - I'll bring my own knife, fork and spoon.
Mary Ann
Jack, you are really getting "artistic". LOL
Joy
Joy, another cold drab day so playing again at the computer. Have another app I revisited and posting in the photo discussion now. (and I can not even draw a straight line)
Bubble. All that food looks scrumptious. Did you make it all? Wonder if Don has lost weight since he come home. Maybe he still is making some of what you taught him.
Jeanne, yes it is all "home made" and my festivity menu. I don't make those quantities normally!
Don is a good cook too and loves to try new recipes. He is addicted to food TV programs and subscribes to some cooking newsletters too.
No one else is going to share food with us? I'll say "bad...."!
[attachimg=1]
Something Larry and I enjoy every day.
Jean, that cone looks delicious and I'd eat one even on such a dreary day as we're having.
Mary Ann
Is that French vanilla ice cream? My favorite together with mocha.
Mary Ann, you always describe your great selection when going for breakfast; what about showing us
Jean, tough looking at that cone when on a low carb diet.
Jack, what about this home made cheese cake?
[attachimg=1]
Or this home made bread? (by a friend)
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, your photos look good enough to eat.
It is hard to take a picture when all I have is my billfold and dark glasses. Oh, and my house keys. My purse is heavy and that is where my camera resides.
The wrap is made with an 8" tortilla and after they roll it up, they cut it in half. They put the two pieces perpendicular to each other and put a long toothpick with a "cap" on it through both pieces to hold them together. The veggies were red and green peppers, white onion and I don't remember what else. So put on your thinking cap and try to imagine the above in color.
Mary Ann
Bubble, sorry but no bread, cake etc. Eat meat, cheese, fish and salad, eggs and bacon. Just back from 4 Gin and tonic, zero carbs. If I had more than 4 I would not stay awake for rest of the evening.
Bubble, I like cheesecake but I also would like that homemade bread. Yum! We always have Haagen-Daz vanilla as it is simple with only 5 natural (fattening) ingredients. Vanilla ice cream is about the only dessert my husband will eat.
Mary Ann, we just finished our ice cream cones while watching a TV mystery program. Both were good.
Jack. I would substitute bread for those gin ‘n tonics. I’ve got to have a few carbs.
Cheese cake, now your talking... :eat:
I have never been a lover of ice cream...
FlaJean. Half your luck. Nothing nicer than a vanilla cone ice cream unless it is one covered in milk chocolate. Being on a diet......I can dream.
No one cooking? What about posting an egg in an eggcup then! ;DSurely you have an egg in the house?/b]
Bubble, sorry but I do so little cooking and what I do cook would not make a very good photo :) I decided to post my morning breakfast. Bran with lots of strawberries and a mug of Coffee (always have two cups)
Show me a Photo from your travels, even old trips.
[attachimg=1]
Very healthy :) You still have strawberries? Here they are long gone and we are at the end of the mangoes season too. Plenty avocado now and all the citrus.
Travels? Sterling idea. I hope we'll see many entries.
Bubble, I just finished my second cup of coffee and was ready to post a photo in the other discussion. Thought instead I would post if here. This is my daily walk, and yesterday the sun came out just long enough to show some fall color. Hope everyone will consider a post of their real travels.
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, we can buy strawberries all year round. Our food comes from various places, not only California, but other countries, for instance, South America. The food isn't as tasty as local varieties in season, but they are available. I miss our homegrown strawberries but our stores no longer handle them, selling California berries instead. Produce is shipped before its prime and that is why it doesn't taste as good as home grown, but in winter it is what is available. It beats canning fruits and vegetables in the summer as my mother used to do.
Mary Ann
I can't imagine that canned strawberry would be good either.
I like having the season's fruit available as it is here, we have very little or no import of fresh produce. Meat yes, cheese and pasta yes, and of course all the cans, sauces, wines, etc. Vodka is a big favorite with our new Russian immigrants.

Bubble, since I won't be able to get to Brussels, your pictures are a good way to travel.
Mary Ann
Bubble thanks for the trip around Brussels, show us more.
Now about the strawberries, I took a short trip to the frig, wanted to check on the source of my strawberries. They came from California, do not know how many more are coming, but I got three containers like shown here, a total of 3 pounds for $5.00, a real bargain and hope they keep coming. Did not retouch the photo, this is right out of the camera.
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, I have to agree with Mary Ann and Jack...... we also can get strawberries year round where I live also. And, they don't taste as good as the local homegrown ones we get in the summertime. We have several farms in my area, where you can go and pick your own fruit...... strawberries, apples that I do know of. I prefer the small berries as I have always found the larger ones tend to be kind of hollow inside.
I have never seen canned strawberries, but you can always get frozen ones. Almost any kind of fruit can be bought frozen here. And, I do buy frozen fruit sometimes.
There is a company in the US called Schwan's Frozen Foods. They deliver all kinds of frozen food right to your door. Some things are a little expensive, but I do order from them quite often. They deliver every 2 weeks where I live and I get the most delicious big black cherries from them. They have all different kinds of meat, fish, seafood and chicken. I don't always get more than 1 or 2 items as most of their things are more expensive than the grocery stores. And, I do get ice cream and last week, I got a delicious pumpkin pie, which is a seasonal item. That I had to bake. But, most of the other things , you cook from their frozen state. Some things are already cooked and you just have to heat them up.
I, too, also enjoyed "traveling" around Brussels. That is one place that I would have liked to see. Specially for all the pretty lace that they make and of course, the chocolate. My son and DIL have been there and they brought me some chocolate candy from there and a small lace centerpiece. I have seen pictures of ladies sitting outside of their shops make the lace. So intriguing looking. I probably would stand there a long time watching them. It is really a pretty area.
Jack, your strawberries look good. Three pounds of strawberries are a lot of strawberries. I only usually buy one of the smaller container as if I buy a quart they usually go bad before I eat them all. That was a good price. Do you have any Wegman stores in your area? They are really a fantastic store... a little expensive but if you want something and can't find it there, it doesn't exist. LOL They have every kind of cheese that you could ever want. Fun to try tasting some of them.
Joy
Joy I do not have a Wegmans or Trader Joes in my area. Have locals, WalMart and Krogers. I do most at Krogers and that is where I purchased the strawberries. Eating them now every morning. May in fact buy more if they still have them and freeze, hoping they are better than frozen packages of them.
Jack, I only buy frozen strawberries if I am making something that I mix the strawberries with. I make a dessert where you break up angel food cake and mix the frozen strawberries with jello and cool whip and pour that mixture over the angel food cake.
The frozen strawberries are usually mushy and only good for mixing in with something else. Not too good to eat as they come out of the freezer. I have frozen whole strawberries before and they get a little mushy after thawing out.
Joy
Joy thanks, read if freezing fresh one, remove all water if washed and as much air as possible in bag to freeze.
Now on with the travels.
From one of my visits to the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh. The outside and one photo of just a portion of the inside.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
I hate to tell you, but my mother did can strawberries. I don't know if anyone else in her family did that. I can tell you too, they were nothing special! Mother also canned peaches and pears and some vegetables, she also made grape juice and I remember the bag hanging under the kitchen sink dripping liquid into a pan on the floor. Remember this was in the 1930s during the Depression. And my mother died in 1941. After Mother died, Dad and I canned peaches one year. That was the end of our canning sessions.
Jack, our strawberries would be 2 for $5 and I don't know the size of the package, but probably the same as yours. I usually chop up the strawberries and put them on cereal or ice cream. We have no Kroger stores in West Michigan, only in SE Michigan (Detroit area).
The Phipps Conservatory looks like an interesting place to visit. Pretty flowers.
Mary Ann
Yes, Jack, it is easy to get off the subject at times. LOL
Joy
Joy I do it all the time. Use my age as the excuse but have done it for years.
Mary Ann I put a slide show of photos in the slide show discussion, it has a number of photos.
Jack, I'll look for it.
Mary Ann
Stunning flower display!

lace making in Brugges Beguinage
[attachimg=3]
More beautiful pictures, Bubble. I still am so fascinated by that intricate way of making lace !!! Thanks for sharing that.
Joy
Wonderful photos of Belgium. Had to laugh when I spotted the lace making. It took me half an hour to sew on a button yesterday. I even had to go out to buy needles with a larger eye, was unable to get the threader into the few needles I had. Usually put aside a job like that for my daughter.
Bubble, at one time I thought I'd like to try making bobbin lace and bought a kit complete with the spindles and a collar-shaped thing to work on. I failed bobbin 101 so my dad tried it. I think he did better than I did, but it wasn't his "thing". I don't know what happened to the kit but I have no parts of it any more.
Interesting pictures of Belgium. Is the one city a canal city?
Mary Ann
Brugges second name is Little Venice
I can see why.
Mary Ann
Bubble, I've been to Brugges about 3 times--mostly at the beginning or end of tours of Belgium and France. It's one of the most charming European cities IMHO. Very tourist friendly with reasonable B&B's, and yummy restaurants. Thanks for the pictures and tell me, how much chocolate did you buy and eat while there? That is one of my favorite things about Brugges.
Sue
A short trip. Just kidding, this is from another app on windows 10, and yes it is Mimi, the paper and article are inserted.
[attachimg=1]
Jack, Mimi sure gets around, doesn't she? It isn't every dog that makes the front page of a newspaper!
Mary Ann
Bubble
I have not visited Brussels so really enjoyed that trip. Interesting lace making.
Jackwv. Beautiful pictures of Phipps Conservatory. Would love a walk through there.
Sue, in Brugges I gorged myself with mussels and chips. Yummy! The chocolates I reserves for Brussels where I had two different well stocked shops on each side of my hotel :D
Jack, you are a wizard with those Windows apps. Mimi sure fits in every circumstances :)
Junee and there is so much more to Brussels and Belgium. Why don't you show me your corner of the world?
This is a photo of a large display of sculptures taken when I was in Warsaw. This depicts the freedom fighters emerging from the sewers to do battle with the occupying Germans. It is quite dramatic but sadly defiled by ignorant tourists who took great pleasure in climbing and cavorting all over these creations.
[attachimg=1]
Don...
...some people just lack respect...
...A very powerful and dramatic sculpture, that captures what their lives were all about, there toughest times ahead fighting for the future of their country...
Don that is impressive, and a shame some will show so little respect.
I met these two fine gentlemen at Mamila which is an ultra chic shopping centre directly across from the Old City. The join for three years at age 18 and are armed and ready for action. So young!
[attachimg=1]
Well do not know where we left off, food or travel. We had a discussion about strawberries. I have been eating quite a few. Appears it is the season and they are great and priced right. I did go overboard and was afraid they would get mushy so I checked the internet. I followed their instructions. Washed them dried them on paper towels and put them in plastic bags removing all air possible. The results they were a waste. They turned soft, and even tried a few partially frozen. I then went on the web and asked if deer ate strawberries and found they did and no warnings. Took them to the park today and here are the results.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Jack, that is a good way to dispose of mushy strawberries. If you eat them on cereal, I often chop up the berries and add a little sugar to bring out the juice. You don't have to sugar the cereal that way. I think they last a little longer that way, maybe it depends on how often you would eat them.
Nice pictures of the deer.
Mary Ann
Jack, I think I have read how to freeze strawberries this way. Wash and dry them well. They have to be completely dry. Lay them out on a cookie sheet and freeze them first. Then, put them in freezer bags. I have bought whole frozen strawberries that were fine. Might be worth a try !
Joy
Mary Ann and Joy, thanks but think that is the last time I freeze strawberries, I may try the ones in the store freezer section. The deer were not picky.
Well I learned that deer like strawberries too :) Good pictures!
Sculpture in Jerusalem
[attachimg=1]
This is still in the travel topic. But we seem to have exhausted that.
Any new suggestion?
Bubble that is an interesting picture, appears to be a man holding a ladder. Did you stop to determine the meaning, if there is one.
How about your picking the next request.
Yes it is a man holding a ladder. I could not stop to investigate: it is in the middle of roundabout!
What about art, statues, sculptures?
Bubble a good idea.
I do not have to go far for one. This is a sand sculpture of a Golden Retriever that I have sitting in front of the ashes of My Jessie and Zoe.
Hope to see some interesting photos from all.
[attachimg=1]
Well it is time to do some chores and get away from the computer. Remembered I had this photo on the machine. This statue is several blocks from my home on Route 40 the old National Road. It is Madonna of the Trail, and dedicated to the pioneer women that traveled to their new homes. There are 12 of the same statue, one in each of 12 states that were along the National Road.
[attachimg=1]
Jack, I remember you posting that picture of the Madonna of the Trail before, but don't remember your mentioning that there are 12 of them in each of the 12 states along the old National Road. I looked up where the one in Maryland is. It is on the Md. Rt. 355 in Bethesda, right outside DC.
That would be nice to see, but don't think I will ever get to see it now. I haven't been over in that area for many years. We used to go to the Washington Zoo through Silver Spring, but didn't know about that statue way back then.
It must be very impressive to see in person.
Joy
Hello world! wishing everyone a good week.
Thanks Don.
Joy you may have noticed she is even holding a gun. Interesting link that has the history, locations and photos of each.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_of_the_Trail
Jack, I could not make out a gun in the Madonna of the Trail statue, however, considering the time frame she represents, I can see why she might have one. I am a DAR and I knew the statues existed.
It's windy at Grand Haven with lots of whitecaps on Lake Michigan.
Mary Ann
Mary Ann, you can just make out the very end of the gun she is holding in her right hand. Looks like it sits on the handle of the gun leaning up against her leg. (Don't know what that end of the gun is called ?) You can tell I don't know a lot about guns. LOL
Joy
Here is a closer picture where you can see the end of the gun.

Joy
Jack, I think you and Mary Ann are a lot like me. Spend WAY TOO MUCH time on the computer just googling stuff. Everytime I think I better get off here and do something more constructive, I think of something else to look up. :computer:
Joy
Joy thanks for posting that shot. Taking your advice, getting off the computer and going to do something (constructive?) Joining my son at our favorite pub and will have a few Gin and Tonic.
Jack, that sounds very constructive!!!
Thanks, Joy, I can make out something, but it didn't look like a gun to me.
Mary Ann
The statue I posted is at the entrance to a small park near me, not Oglebay. Here is another statue located in the park, a civil war statue.
[attachimg=1]
Jack, I think your idea is a great idea for doing some "constructive". LOL

Bubble that is a beautiful carving, and interesting links. Have always admired what wood carvers create.
Oh, do not have time to talk but was creating birthday cards for the week, 4 done so far but 4 more to go.... & wanted to show y'all what today looks like out my kitchen window. The red/yellow & burgandy tree is a Cleveland pear, the yellow one is a sweet gum.... that I grew from a seedling. We finally got rid of the drizzle & fog & all this color popped out. It's dark & my neighbor just called to remind me my dumpster is NOT out by the curb.

(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/58-161117185651.jpeg)
So many photos & links (some I could get & some not).... so I have one of a sculpture maker of "downed" trees here in Wichita. Most of the time they were left standing where they died but sometimes they were mounted back on the stump. Early in his career a friend of mine helped him get started, how I learned of him. I think he has almost a primative quality but they grow on you (me). http://ginosalerno.com/8443.html (http://ginosalerno.com/8443.html)
I do love all the photos & wish I could see every place in person... Now about those strawberries, I just discovered a new type of grape and can't get my fill. I'm going up to the frig see if it says where they come from... so different from any grape I have ever eaten! They were demonstrating them at Sam's Club the other day & I am doing a good job finishing off the 3 lb. tup I bought. They came from CA (a product of the US) called "Grapery"
Think I will go to bed soon, will give cats their midnight snack early. Lots to do tomorrow, supposed to be in the 70s but windy.
Shirley, beautiful fall colors. Ours is about gone. Now I have a young Cleveland Pear and its leaves are still green. May post a photo when they yellow. Liked the link, he has talent.
Very special sculptures, Shirley, thanks for the link. Have you never done a painting of a sculpture?
I had a lady that worked for me that did sculptures. Most of animals and she was very good at it. They were the little ones that sit on a table.
Bubble, I've been all over the computer today, looking for a photo of the only sculpture around here that impresses me, it's called, "Keeper of the Plains"... done by Blackbear Bosin. He was alive when I painted it & "rumor" was that nobody could paint it because
he kept all rights & only allowed the Indian Center to sell reproductions. I knew this wasn't true but called him to ask/tell him I had a painting of the statue & planned to take if for sale at the next show I was doing. He told me okay & came to the show, said he liked the painting & I thanked him & said I loved the statue. It sold immediately, to someone that he knew. I painted it again with a different background & colors & a friend went bonkers over it, wanted to buy but I insisted on giving it to her. Difficult to paint so never did it again. I dug into my PhotoBucket account (had to reset my password).... so here's a photo of the statue. Don't have a photo of either painting. I thought I had a group of photos of sculptures I've done but not in PhotoBucket. :-[ I really enjoyed sculpting but don't have my own kiln & too much trouble to have them fired someplace else. I took classes at the city art department & firing was included.
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/58-171117204237.jpeg)
What a sculpture! and in steel! I had to check it and found it fascinating. Thanks Shirley.
https://www.visitwichita.com/listing/keeper-of-the-plains-plaza/28029/ (https://www.visitwichita.com/listing/keeper-of-the-plains-plaza/28029/)
Your sculptures were clay? not wood?
I used different types of clay, Bubble... had them fired where we had the classes & then put paint/patina on... some looked like bronze but the clay would break or chip in not careful. I did have a few pieces "high" fired by a lady with her own kiln.... I was told by the owner of the store that sold all equipment (where I bought the clay).. that a high fired piece was as durable as granite. I made a plaque with the names of my father's great grandparents that came from France in 1855 & buried in a little cemetery on their farm. Now that there is a road all the way back to where my ancestors are buried, we could have put in a real monument, but since the stump was removed nobody is left alive that could actually find the burial spot. I just wanted a record of whose bodies were there if ever dug up, not sure that anything would remain of wooden coffins or even bones, since they died before my father was born. My grandmother was born in 1871 and the farm was left to her when her grandparents died, instead of leaving it to either of their daughters. Then when Dad died I made a stone about 10" square with my parents names in a cross, me & my siblings & all 23 of their grands names surrounding... put on it "Love Lives On". It is tough enough for a mower to drive over. I visit a few times a year & pull the grass away. I buried it flat near the vase for flowers mounted in their tomb stone. The cemetery only allows one type of monument. I donated a couple sculptures for auctions, charities.... was told the one sold for well over $100 but didn't get a report from the other. I never took them to a show or offered for sale, quit doing shows by then, so they've been used for gifts or still in my basement. More than you wanted to know, huh? Thanks for that link. :crazy2:
I have 3 or 4 masks molded by my children and me, made of unfired clay. We sprayed them with metallic paint, bronze, copper or gold and they still look good on the wall after thirty years.
I have posted this in the past. Statues that are in the garden of a nearby mansion. This was during the summer when the fountain was on.

I love that Sculpture but it looks like a female. (like has breast). Doubt could be done here as shown Naked. US seem to be funny about naked art
JeanneP glad you posted, it has been quiet in here. Think with all the news the message is "ok to look, just don't touch" ;)
Now I had requested photos of doors, gates or garden entrances. Here is one to the Mansion several blocks from my home.

Two great ones Bubble. It's great when you can just go into your old photo albums to post a favorite. Hope we see more.
Great pictures of some very interesting sculptures and gate ways.
Joy
Jack I have a big flash drive with all my photos, starting from 1999 when I got my first digital camera. They are filed by trimester of each year.
The difficulty is finding the right file for a picture I remember!
A Roman Gate - Rome
[attachimg=1]
A Entrance gate - notice the old fashion bell
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, two great pictures. The first one of the Roman gate looks like a painting.
Joy
Bubble those are two wonderful photos. My collection also started with the digital camera. I have very few old ones. I have put mine in folders and sub folders by location, family, home etc and of course one just for Oglebay with many sub folders. I like this subject since it often gets me to go back and look for a photo to post.
Entrance to Bethany College West Virginia
[attachimg=1]
Jack - Bethany College, looks to have a unique architectural style? If you're allowed to walk around and take pictures inside the gates, I'd like to see more photos?
Marilyne. Bethany is a small college located about 20 miles north of me. I have just driven by it several times over the years and was taken with the entrance. Wrong time of the year for outdoors now. It is off the main roads but may visit in the spring when things in bloom and if I can walk Mimi. You can see a load of photos on Google Image.
Cool but a bit of sun, so will take our walk soon. Speaking of gates how could I forget this one I walk through several times each month at Oglebay. This photo was taken in the early fall.
[attachimg=1]
Those are some lovely photos! Don’t know why but that Rome gate is especially appealing.
Jean, I agree with the picture of the Rome gate. It looks like a painting to me. The colors are really beautiful. I doubt that it looks like that in person. I think the fact that it was taken inside of the archway is what makes the colors so different. And that cross is directly in the exact middle.
Bubble, I am assuming you took the picture of the Roman Gate??? You did a perfect job. Very unusual.
Joy
Jack, beautiful brick work on that gate, and I liked the unusual domes on top. It could be the gate of a fortified castle, just missing the moat around. :)
My daughter took that picture in Rome at Christmas a few years ago. I think she liked the 3D view there. The colors are exactly how it looked. It was misty but bright that day.
Bubble I am sure you told your daughter what a fantastic job she did with that photo.
I like this discussion since it brings out some photos we have not viewed for some time.
Bubble, please tell your daughter that her picture is just beautiful. She did a great job !!!!
Joy
Thank you, thank you!
And very appropriate for this time of the year: It would make a great wishing card!
What about Holidays photos? Let's see how it is in your corner of the world...
Cold and snowing, so yes I am at the computer. May go to the park later. May have posted this. This is in front of the Oglebay Mansion, so I had Mimi join the choir.

[attachimg=1]
Loving all the photos, wonderful time of year to show off all those angles & lines.... and I am full of regrets that my photos are in NO order at all, on the mini CDs from the first digital to many thumb drives, SD cards & have no clue how to organize them. :tissue: I have a photo of the entrance of the MO State Fairgrounds main gate & flowers around it taken a few years ago just before "fair" time. I ran across it not long ago & admired those flowers but no idea where to pluck it out of my mess.
I drove to MO this week, just overnight (500-600 miles round trip).... and while my camera sat on the passenger seat it didn't come out of it's case the whole trip. The big rear view mirrors on this RV block me from getting any decent shots when driving.... & being able to do that was always my favorite thing to do, as a passenger & a driver. One spot going to MO I would love to show you but no place to stop & get out to take a photo.... for as far as one can see east & west I often reach just as a train is passing under the highway.... and in this area the landscape is so flat you can "see forever" but I never cease to be amazed at how long those trains can be. I've counted 6 engines linked together pulling with more on the end pushing. When admiring the vastness of Kansas my brain goes to singing "Don't Fence Me In".........As Sophia would say on Golden Girls.........."picture it".
Shirley I have always lived in areas with hills or mountains. When traveling I always marveled at miles of level ground. You mention the photos and for years I have downsized even the photos, keeping my favorites. I also managed to make folders to help me find what I wanted. Even with windows 10 I do not use their app but have my own files, have to keep it simple.
Here is a collage of 12 separate exhibits for the days of Christmas. They have been at Oglebay for years and many times we would drive by with children and sing along.
[attachimg=1]
Tough to see the details in the collage, so here is a photo of the Twelfth Day.
[attachimg=1]
Thanks for the pictures, Jack. I sang some of the songs, but didn't remember all 12! Getting to be 80 and after a fall from my roof last year, my memory is not what it once was.
Sue
Sue, I would not be able to sing about the 12 anymore. At 87 my memory is also slipping and never was that good. Just hang onto the good memories.
I'm trying, I'm trying, Jack! The long time memories are as clear as a bell--the day to day memories are the tough ones.
Sue
Nice collage, Jack.
[attachimg=1]
Jean thanks that really brings a smile to my face.
How cute, Jean!

St Peter Square at Christmas - Rome
Bubble a great group of photos. Had to laugh at all the Santa's One did not even cover up his own black beard.
I did not noticed that before, Jack, but I saw that one of them crossed his coat like a a woman, right on left.
I noticed none of those Santas had bellies like bowls full of jelly too.
Mary Ann
[attachimg=1]
The Santas were walking the streets for a rally in favor of remembering the children that were kidnapped. There had been a few that year.
Nice photos, Bubbles. It is lunch time here and all those Christmas goodies are making me hungry. ðŸŽ,,
Jack, did you post a video of Ave Maria? I can't find it now and want to send it to my friend who drives me to Sunday School and Church. For some reason I've lost it. Would you send me a link to that video--and if you didn't post it, tell me who did?
Thanks,
Sue
Sue, sorry I do not recall posting it. Lots of versions on YouTube. If you recall the performer it helps.

Christmas market in Barcelona =Spain
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, I loved the photos of the Barcelona market, especially the wine and fruit and candy--the meat not so much. I eat meat, but not much as I prefer fruit and veggies. Candy, too! Once when my husband was deployed in the Mediterranean, he was able to take a week's leave in Barcelona and my mother-in-law came up from Alabama to Maine to stay with our 3 sons. He and I had a great time in Madrid and Barcelona. Gramma and boys, not so much!
Sue
Jack - I love the expression on the cats face! ;D He looks genuinely annoyed, by the whole idea of Christmas!
Bubble, My niece's daughter and her family are living in Germany for 3 years. Her husband is in the service and they went over there in July. They have 3 little girls, 3, 6 and 8. My niece, her husband and another daughter went over to spend Christmas with them. She has posted pictures of several German Christmas markets that they went to. Looked like so much fun. Father Christmas made an appearance while they were at one of them. It looks like it is very cold with some snow yesterday. The ones that are living there have tried to take the girls to someplace each week end. Back in the fall, they took a train to Paris and I saw pictures of them, with the 3 girls, up in the Eifel Tower. The two oldest ones go to a school on the military base, but I just feel like they will get more of an education by going to all these interesting places. What an wonderful opportunity for them all. There is a big castle right near where they live. It gave me chills when I saw them up in the Eifel Tower. They were so excited. They always take lots and lots of pictures, so at least the 2 oldest girls will have great memories of their time over there.
Thanks for sharing your market pictures. Would so love to be able to go to a place like that.
Joy
WOW photos, all of them! Bubble, your daughter with the big Santa looks like Santa has his hand on her shoulders.... I know it's his sleeve actually, but first glance is he's patting her on the back. Great photos. How did she get the photo from that angle of St.Peter's Square? My daughter sent one from Hawaii that she explained later, "taken from a helicopter". Love the shopping, one thing I enjoyed most when we lived in England. "Peddlers" came to the small towns from London (I was told) & I still have my daughter's coat in the cedar chest, that I made to match one I made for myself.... of Harris tweed. Fantastic wool~ tiny, she was 15-17 months old when we came home. Thanks for the photos.
Jack, love that big cat, really a beauty. Fluffy white feet & pretty markings.
I took down the decorations from outside, supposed to be bitter cold from tonight until next week, not to get above freezing & the chill index "in dangerous ranges". Will put away tomorrow, lots of up & down steps but that doesn't hurt as bad as sitting too long. Still have a very sore back end. Bet I don't step back off a ladder again when up in the air. :crazy2:
I will take camera down to the river to show you the ice, maybe not until Sunday or Monday when at it's worse. The water under the ice is so swift it pushes slabs of ice up & over the bank, water level down this year so should be interesting.
jack, what a beautiful cat. With all those presents under the tree, I bet there were plenty of “after Christmas decorations†there.
Bubble, enjoyed those photos!!
Joy, where in Germany is your family based? During the Korean War, Norm was based in Schwetzingen (so long ago I've forgotten how to spell the town) but he worked in Heidelberg. He sent many lovely things home - a cuckoo clock, some Hummel figurines, a camera, other figurines and some other things. I paid for the camera but the others were gifts. He liked it over there and always wanted to go back but first finances and later health problems kept him from going back. I did go to Germany (Hamburg) in 2000 but did not get down to that area.
Mary Ann
Marilyne, Shirley and Jean that cat is "Paws" When I visited last year he would not come near me, and have not been back with Mimi. Possibly in the spring.
Mary Ann, the ones that are stationed in Germany are at the Ramestein Air Force base in Rhineland-Palatinate, which is in the southwest part of Germany. I think she told me that it is the main US air base in Europe.
The Christmas markets they went to were in Nuremberg and Rothenburg. She said when they took the train to Paris, it only took about 3 hours. I think they went for the week end. They are really getting around and seeing a lot of the country,
Lots of castles around where they are. I think it is wonderful that the children are getting to see so many interesting places. They all seem to be adjusting very well. This is the first time they have been overseas. They have been stationed in several places in the states. Once they get just about settled in one place, they have to move again. The husband is some kind of an instructor and has been in the service for a good while now.
Joy
Not a request, but mine would be for spring. We had several inches of snow and not sure I want to start clearing the walks. Posting a photo of birds eating the berries in my Barberry Bushes. They have been busy for almost a month and the leaves and berries about gone. Took this photo out the window to show a few of them.
[attachimg=1]
Joy, I think your relatives are stationed somewhat south of where Norm was.
In 2000 a friend and I flew to Denmark and spent a week there, then took the train from Copenhagen to Hamburg. When we got to the border between the two countries, we had to change from one train to another. What amazed me was that my cousin had asked what car we would be on and when we stopped in Hamburg, there were my relatives standing outside the window where we sat. That was so neat because we didn't have to haul our luggage through a station and/or wait for them to appear. I think Europe relies more on train travel than we do and it is a shame. I don't remember how long the trip from Copenhagen to Hamburg took, but it was a comfortable ride, even with having the change trains.
Mary Ann
Mary Ann, I don't know anything about places in Germany or any other places in Europe, I do enjoy seeing all the pictures that they put up on Facebook.
I will never get to see any of those places . I have been to Mexico and also to Canada, but those two places are the only places outside the US that I have been to.
The only place that I had always wanted to go to was the area where The Sound Of Music was filmed. I guess that is Austria. I do a lot of arm chair traveling and can get lost in some of the links that I click on. My oldest son and DIL have traveled quite a bit. My son retired from the Dept. of Defense a few years ago, and he had traveled extensively when he was working. My DIL has her own business, so she could sometimes go with him, depending on where he was going. He had a top security job and lots of times, he couldn't tell us where he was going. But, now they travel several times a year to places he had been to and wants her to see the same places. One time, several years ago, he called me one night and he was in the North Pole. And, it sounded like he was in the next room. They also have taken several of the river barge cruises which usually pass through several different countries, They have done the Rhine River one and the Danube one. I think I would have liked those trips.
But, I have to be content to just visit places via the Internet. Plus, with all the stuff that is going on now in this world, I don't think I would consider going to too many places anymore. I get a bit anxious when they do travel abroad, but their answer is anything can happen anyplace and you can't let fear keep you from doing things. I guess that is an ok way to feel if you are younger. I am not even anxious to go down into Baltimore city anymore.
I hope you have a nice day at your family party today. Hope Dot feels well enough to go with you. I know you are anxious to see all the new babies.
Joy
Joy, other than Denmark and Germany, I also have been to England around London, Northern Ireland and Scotland. I don't think I want to fly any more, partly because of the uncertainty of flying, especially overseas, and mostly because of my age. Other than when Jim and I took tours and had to fly to get to the starts, I had to travel alone. I did sign up for Frequent Flyer and put down that I needed a wheelchair and while there were close calls, I always made the flight OK. But I don't want to do it any more.
We had a very nice gathering today. James was to pick up pizzas but called on our way to Jan's that they were running late, would his dad pick them up. It turned out where he ordered them was convenient to him, but not to us. We had to go to Grand Valley State Univ and that was far from where were were. But we picked up the pizzas and got to Jan's OK. Everyone except James and Alicia and Annie were there. Annie never did get there, thinking it was for tomorrow instead. We ate our pizzas and gabbed, then left for Panera's restaurant to exchange gifts and more talk - just James' family, Tom and me.
All three babies were so good, no prolonged crying. This was the first opportunity for us to see Isaiah from CA and he is so cute. His mother is Chinese and Isaiah looks more Chinese than Caucasian - very dark hair and brown eyes. I think his eyes are not like most Orientals. He crawls at a fast pace. The kids were interested in each other, but the girls are nearly 11 months old and Isaiah is nearly 10 months old. I think they will not be able to see each other often.
I looked at my bedroom thermometer and it read -2 degrees. The one in here reads -1.5 degrees but it's been a few minutes since I looked at either.
Dot is not going to church in the morning, so Tom will take me.
Tom was going to drive tonight but just came home saying it wasn't too busy. He can get a good night's sleep then. When he drives, his sleep hours are very irregular.
Mary Ann
Shall we go back to photo requests?
Jack mentioned spring...

Bubble thanks for a new start in this discussion. After two weeks fighting a cold and cough, I am ready for spring, but sorry to say, still a way off here. Posting a past spring photo taken at the park, and will dream of it soon coming. Lets have more spring photos.
[attachimg=1]
Oh, it is beautiful, Jack.
The following are all from May 2009 or May 2013
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=1]
Petunia! with a mauve heart - love it!
These skies don't make me feel like spring, but they are certainly interesting.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=1]
Patricia, great photos but mean looking sky.
Jean two pretty ones!
Spring locally comes out in April's grays and browns as the snows melt. Then, we have about a week or two of late May rains to bring greenery and all the colors back to the Arctic.
Those were all taken in the back of the bowl company's lumber yard.
Snow has its moments, but like the fountain statue photos I celebrate the spring.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Beautiful photos Jack!!! I enjoy both ,your photos have captured each joy of season...thank you for sharing.
Spring is not that far away....
Soon we shall see the daffodils.
Amy and soon the daffodils, hard to wait.
FlaJoan, the hibiscus is stunning. We have both these flowers here but the second one grows wild on the sand dunes. I don't remember its name.
Jack that fountains looks good in all seasons!
Amy, what is that first clump of pastel bells? I never saw the like, so delicately shaped.
My first car was named Daf for Daffodil - Holland firm.
Bubble, I will try and find out the name for you. I just know they are VERY invasive and I am forever pulling out new shoots.
In a pot they would not be invasive. Are they on a bush, or climbing? Hard to see that.
Amy, those “pastel bells†are so pretty. Enjoy all the photos. Our Blue Daze died back during the cold weather and am hoping they will put out new shoots now that the weather is warming.
Well this is not spring. In the 50's yesterday and rain. All the snow was gone! This morning left Mimi out and we had about 3 inches of snow. Here is view from my front window, no garage and have to clean off the car.
[attachimg=1]
Well, Jack, at least you had a pretty view this morning! Did you have to shovel your driveway?
Sue
Sue I sing in our Funeral Choir and had to get to church. Did not shovel the driveway. I do have a small snow blower but did not use. Snow now melting and hope tomorrow to get to the park, but are to have rain. Today We are both relaxing.
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, this is what I came up with for a name and it is the seeds that scatter that makes it hard to contain.

Jack, Mimi looks so sweet snuggled on the couch :)
Jack wv...
...she sure knows comfort when she finds it....but then, dont they all... ;D
Amy: additional info on the Korean Bell flower:
Edible Uses
Edible Parts: Flowers; Leaves; Root.
Edible Uses:
Leaves - raw or cooked[K]. A mild flavour with a subtle sweetness, especially in the spring and early summer they taste just like lettuce and are a pleasant addition to mixed salads[K]. In the height of summer, the leaves often develop a slightly bitter flavour, especially if the plant is growing in a sunny position[K]. Flowers - raw. Beautiful to look at, the flowers have a delicate sweetness and are a pleasant addition to salads[K]. Roots - raw, cooked or dried for later use. Known as 'do-ra-jee' in Korea, where they are eaten as a delicacy. The roots are a bit small and fiddly to utilize, though they are said to have a simply delicious flavour.
Did you know? I wish I could find it as it is said it can be grown in container, but not known here :(
Maybe you can mail me some seeds? :)
This should be interesting in a salad
Bubble, that was interesting to read ,thank you. I have it all pulled now....I hope!!!
Pulled for the salad, Amy? :D I use nasturtium, tasty too.
I like nasturtiums in a salad, peppery tasting. Pansies and violets are also nice in a salad or I have decorated a cake with pansies too.
Ever tried carnations?
I like sugared violets for decoration
No, not yet :) I love carnations over roses, carnations last much longer and some do have a nice scent. I used to have a cyclamen that had a beautiful scent, a white one.
[attachimg=1]
My cyclamen . but no scent!
Bubble your plant is beautiful!! Seems only the little white ones have any scent to them.
Let's continue here with photos!
Show me a vehicle
Just having morning coffee Bubble. Posting a photo taken several years ago. An Old Packard parked on the lawn in front of Oglebay Mansion
Lets have more vehicle photos.

More vehicles please
Old trolley I rode on back in 1940
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
How interesting! Were they all yellow?
Bubble, at that time, all in our area were yellow. Some cities had different colors. We then had the red and white "streamliners" until Pittsburgh removed and replaced with bus and rapid transient. Interesting story and photos from back then.
http://wesa.fm/post/how-pittsburgh-transit-evolved-horse-drawn-streetcars-modern-t#stream/0
That was very informative, how the transport system evolved.
No tram lines here, just buses and lots and lots of private cars. Traffic is getting terrible and parking in town is a nightmare.
We have a bus system here but I don't know how or if it works because I no longer have to take a bus to work. There is one that comes out from downtown to Lowe's, near me. It seems people in Michigan are so enamored of their cars that public transportation loses out. For years I took the bus, which ran every five minutes in rush hour. Many mornings I'd be running for the bus (two blocks from home) to find the driver waiting for me. I got on before the end of the line, so he could do that. Before we got downtown, there was standing room only morning and evening rush hours. When I started working in 1942, bus fares were 12 tokens for $1. Now fares are well over $1, maybe $1.25.
Them days is gone forever!
Mary Ann
FWIW - Here's a trolley that I used to ride from time to time. Somewhere I have a pic of one from a different line (route) that is bogged down from a snow storm. If I can find it I will post it. This was toward the end of trolleys here. They were replaced with busses.

Travelling in style: wheelchair, walker, scooter and all!
Bubble...
...you missed out the kitchen sink... ;D guess there wasn't any room for that...
...this looks like you were all on a jeep safari..I can see Don sitting there completely relaxed and taking the scenery all in his stride...
Yes, Don, me by his side, little Aviv behind, his parents out exploring, my caregiver taking pictures...
We were touring a Nature Reserve and seeing the migrating birds.
Bubble, the "all-inclusive" vehicle. It holds everyone and everything.
Mary Ann
One can forget the " package tour " this is the brand new " all Inclusive tour...where one gets more for their money...I bet you even made room to pick up souvenirs...
We did pick some garlic... :)
Now that is a fully equipped vehicle. :thumbup: :thumbup:
WOW! Great photos from all, and I'll bet my family would swear I was on that vehicle with you, Bubble, they think I'm always taking everything but the kitchen sink & now it does go (in the RV). Must have been a fantastic day, or days..... That little tractor looks like it can do about anything.
I just gave my son a call to warn him he is driving right into the area a tornado is showing... on the ground. He says his smart phone will notify him if one is near. Weather is really wild here in KS today, had a thunderstorm just as he left my house with his camper I talked to him just as he got out of town & he mentioned he went through a "flooded street" that has been a bad spot for as long as we have lived in Wichita (some 50 years). You'd think the city would get it fixed by now, wouldn't you? Didn't realize it rained that much in that spot, but he chose that route because ALL of the other exits from the city had major work being done on the streets, one lane traffic with delays.
I rode those street cars when living in Kansas City in 1953... neat photos, I never had a camera at that time, thanks for the memories, Rick & Jack.
[attachimg=1]
This too is a kind of transportation :)
[attachimg=1]
Is a winged horse a vehicle?
[attachimg=1]
Wheeled horse versus wheel chair ;D
Show more vehicle please!
Hello Bubble, think you better stay with the wheel chair! Great photo
Was unable to get a full view of the auto from old movies. This is my son at the door of our 1950 Dodge. That was the car I left on my honeymoon June 2 1956. Today is 62 years. Lost Shirley almost 20 years ago, but still wear the ring and carry the good memories.

[attachimg=1]
Unusual ones, Angel. Those shopping carts could also count as :2funny:
do you wish to continue the same topic, or proposing a change?
Jack, interesting about June 2, 1956 - my oldest nephew, now deceased, was born on that date.
Mary Ann
This didn't quite come out the way I hoped but I was trying to convey the images of the tractors and the wagon on which the goods were transported.
[attachimg=1]
Took this today. Oglebay has several small buses that look like trollies. They take the guests in to town or around the park.
[attachimg=1]
Took this photo several years ago at the Charleston Tea Plantation, the only tea plantation in North America. This was the tour trolley. Found out about the tea plantation in a mystery book and looked it up on the internet. It is located on an island close to Charleston, South Carolina. It was an interesting tour.
[attachimg=1]
Good ones! Is the Charleston Tea Plantation one still touring?
[size= Yes, it is. We were there in Oct. 2011 but A friend went last year and they have actually added to the tour some buildings where they show starting plants, etc. They have a large special harvester that harvests the plants. This large tractor-like machine was produced special for them and can’t be used at other tea plantations as most tea is grown on hillsides (at least that is what they say on the tour).

A tractor preparing the soil at a local field.
[attachimg=1]
I believe these three strollers might count as vehicles.
[attachimg=1]
I'd like to propose a change. How about old, or weathered vintage buildings? It could be a cabin or a shack, a lean-to or a grist mill or covered bridge, millhouse, even an older wall with a faded old-time advertisement. This cow barn from the thirties would be a good start. It is still in use at a local farm.
[attachimg=1]
Angelface, the video of the farmer plowing looks as if you need some rain. Is it usually so dry there at this time of year?
Sue
This is a "Florida Cracker House". Photo taken at the Florida State Park in Marion County, Florida.
[attachimg=1]
Unfortunately yes as these photos show in early spring, the snow has melted, the rains are late and little is green yet. The farmer is planting barley for the birds at the refuge because many have come for thousands of miles. For about ten years before 2016, we had little to no snow or summer rain during a decade-long drought.
An earlier photo, (Post #633); shows a firetruck bringing needed water to the refuge.
Interesting photo of the house Jean. What is a Florida Cracker House?
Jean, I hadn't heard of Cracker other than a slang term for a southerner. I'll have to Google. Is it similar to the bayou houses in Louisiana?
old or weathered building? Could this qualify?
Colosseum in Rome.
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, your photo of the Roman Colloseum reminds me of the time I was in Rome while vacationing and a group of men were dressed like Roman soldiers and asking (women tourists especially) to pay them for photographs. I thought it was a rip off and told a friend I wouldn't do that--and one of the so called Roman soldiers was extremely rude and cursed me in English and Italian! I guess I should have kept my opinion to myself!
Sue
Angel, when we toured the "Cracker Village", one of the attendants said they thought that the name came from the way they cracked the whips. He demonstrated and it definitely sounded "Crack!" They were cattlemen and cowboys of Florida. Several of the houses were donated to the village by the families who originally owned them. According to Florida Cracker history, the first cowboys in the US were in Florida (a little known fact).
Sue, I have a photo of Illy with that Roman soldier! ;D
Bubble, are you sure that it is old enough and really, open to the air and all? ::) ;)
Jean, thank you for that information about the houses. No, I didn't know that about the Cowboys or the whips.
I just found a picture of Los Angeles transportation - rich!
[attachimg=1]
Next request: anything about water, sea, falls, etc.
I am down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh. This photo is of the "Point" in Pittsburgh. The fountain is located at the spot two rivers form the beginning of the Ohio River, flowing down south to the left front of the photo.
[attachimg=1]
It looks so peaceful...
Beautiful photos of the streetcar, Bubble, and of the Point Jack!
This Springtime photo and the next Spring photo are of the refuge ponds that last only three months of the year before seeping into the ground.

I Love these sanctuaries/ we have a similar one here at Hula, where the migrating birds rest on their way back and forth.
Thanks, Bubble, these birds settle to fuel up in the front areas from the barley and other seeds volunteers plant for them before heading further back into the Refuge or even further North to breed.
I was intrigued by the photos of Hula's sanctuary and refuge. I Googled and found some beautiful images. I was especially intrigued by one of the little bee-eaters.
https://www.timesofisrael.com/its-for-the-birds/
I am able to get in to post again (thanks to Bubble). Love your photos, Patricia, and I do love the link to migrating birds in Israel. We sit on the path for north/south migration here in central US and most of the time can see a variety in my own back yard/river. We have some refuges to the west of Wichita but I have never visited. So far I have not found a place to camp overnight to get those early morning or late evening photos. I used to jump out of bed at dawn to run down by the river for breath taking colors but with nobody at the house to know if I come back, I am more cautious. Not afraid but realize I could lay in a heap anywhere in that brush and nobody would miss me for hours or days. My kids usually call about every day but ............
I have never seen those bee-eaters... very colorful!
Posting for JUNEE
PLOCTON in Highlands of Scotland - Taken when holidaying there. Could not take a bad photo in this part of the world.
[attachimg=1]
Posting for Junee
Sunset on Lake Michigan at South Haven.
[attachimg=1]
Junee, great photos of both Plocton, Scotland, (I loved the loch's reflections!); and the Michigan view of South Haven. Has MaryAnn seen this photo?
Bubble, thanks for posting for Junee! I also liked the shot of the Honey Buzzard. There are to my knowledge, no Alaskan buzzards.
Hi Shirley!
Junee, nice pictures of South Haven and Scotland. No, Patricia, I had not seen this shot and I don't know how many years it's been since I've been to South Haven. It's about 100 miles south of us and Grand Haven is much closer.
Mary Ann
Wonderful pictures! In all the books I’ve read that are set in Scotland the weather is always rainy and cold, but that picture in Scotland shows another side. Lovely photo, Junee.
Isn't that picturesque (Scotland)? I'm always interested in the town people, love to visit with them. My daughter was very impressed with all of Scotland that she saw.... I've never been there. As a matter of fact, I've never been to Michigan, either! If I remember right, Junee, you did a lot of traveling over the years. Thanks for the photos.
Hi, Patricia..... nope, guess I'll only get to see Alaska through your photos... never know, I think I'd still try if one of my kids wanted to make the trip (in their own vehicle) as well. At this time of year I would love to go anywhere it is cool.... and not real high altitude. Not asking for much, huh? My daughter was saying today that her areas (St.Louis) is looking like August and we are even dryer than they are. The grass going down to the river is dry & brittle, trees look the same... and it isn't even the first of summer yet!
Shirley, with relatives all over Kansas, Colorado, Northern California and Missouri; I never noticed different feelings in the mountains or hills or even on the plains.
Fairbanks is set at the junction of three rivers and two others now wind in and out of the city limits. We were initially a riverside trading post and later gold camp on the river and perch half in the valley and a half on the east and west foothills, so the altitude and temperatures vary somewhat.
Here is what Google lists and I don't know where they're estimating from, nor if it is high or low for you.
Our elevation in town proper is 446. Altho up in the hills among some of the subdivisions, its much higher
64.8378° N, 147.7164° W
Junee, I'm of Celtic ancestry, Irish, (Shannon, Tinkler & Dale); Scottish, (Johnston); and Welsh, (Thomas & Davies); but have never been to any of those countries although I am the only one of my immediate family who hasn't been.
Excluding later generations, everyone on my maternal side that I've met or heard about had or has some type of red hair. My maternal grandfather had black hair and a red chest and beard. There were some blondes, but even those were strawberry. My paternal side did or has very dark black or dark brown hair.

[attachimg=3]
Bubble, should I look out my window, at fog and rain? Or should I look at your terrific photos and wish I was there? Hmmm, such a hard decision. :-\ ::)
Thank you! :)
So my next request is: show us a favorite dish, a food you enjoy.
Wonderful photos, Junee, Pat and Bubble. Nothing to add but enjoy your photos.
Jack, do you have a photo of fav. dish?
Bubble, sorry but I never cook my favorite dish, possibly steak or ribs and baked potato. No point in posting a photo of frozen dinners. :) :)
Jack, I had to laugh at your reply to Bubble. I'm not fond of frozen dinners, either, but I eat my share of them. I did take time today to cook a beef patty, fresh asparagus, and a baked potato for my lunch. I try to eat a larger meal at lunch time and something less around 5:30 when I'm ready to watch the evening news.
Sue
Sue I am having back pains, decided to go to local pub for a few beer and was tempted to get a photo of Chili and a beer, but passed on the Chili and now cooking a frozen dinner - no photos.
Sue, where is the photo of that feast? :)
Jack, what about a photo of the beer since it seems to be a favorite?
Bubble did not take a photo at the pub. Folks there get nervous when there is a camera around :)
Just pulled a bottle out of the frig. Craft brewing has become so popular over the past few years with many even small local firms. I am a fan of IPA's India Pale Ales. I have no one favorite, like trying new ones as they come along. This one caught my eye because of the name and is from a brewery over in Maryland.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Lovely bottle!
I never heard of IPA.
http://allaboutbeer.com/beer_style/india-pale-ale/ (http://allaboutbeer.com/beer_style/india-pale-ale/)
Bubble thank you for that good article. At the end it mentions Double and Imperial IPA'S and I often ask for them when available. So many still drink so-called Lite Beers, but to me they are like drinking water. With the Double and Imperial you drink slowly and 3 for me is tops.
Still hope others will post the food photos, but I had to post this as a followup to my beer posts. I used a app to put my sons dog on a beer can. At the time it was just a pup and weight possibly 10 pounds. I am also posting it now, fully grown and 180 pounds. It is a Leonberger.
[attach=1]
[attachimg=2]
I wonder what his favorite food is... :2funny:
Bubble, believe he is like my Goldens. Favorite is whatever is in the bowl. Here is one of my two former Goldens Jessie and Zoe. Mimi now eats out of the same bowl.
[attachimg=1]
Jack, I am a beer lover, too, but I don't drink it every day. My favorite at the moment is a Belgian White Wheat beer, Blue Moon. I sometimes drink a glass of wine on the weekend while watching movies on TV--I prefer a red, but white is OK, too. A cold beer in the afternoon of yard work in the heat is a good choice, too!
Sue
Sue I can go a day without a beer, but meet my son on his way home from work, and have a few several days a week.
One of the most memorable events of Bubble's visit to me in Canada was the day she and her family went to one of my sons for supper and feasted on the most succulent beef tenderloin I have ever tasted. I believe Bubble shares my opinion of that meal. These are the before and after pictures.
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
Don that makes my mouth water, and no bone about it :)
For Father's Day. Tom's son, James, fixed a pork tenderloin and basted it with a sauce that had everything under the sun in it. The tenderloin was both tender and delicious. I did not take a picture - sorry.
Mary Ann
My son, also, makes a delicious beef tenderloin. He coats is with a dry rub mix. It is better than Prime Rib ! He cuts it in a thick slice or sometimes slices it thin to make sandwiches with it.
Jack and Sue, I am not a big beer drinker, but do like a really cold Rolling Rock with my steamed crabs. I was recently introduced to the Seagram's Escapes.. lots of delicious flavors of wine coolers. I think they might have been around a while, but new to me. I particularly like the Sangria and the peachy one. But. all that I have tried, so far, are good. My son gave me several cartons of the different flavors. A lot of them are fruity tasting.
I love seeing all the great pictures, and especially the ones of "Jack's girls".
Joy
Joy I miss the days I was up your way in Westminster. The Double Dog I posted is also near you in Frederick Md.
Joy, I have a great recipe for Sangria that I got while vacationing in Madrid some years ago. I'll dig around in my cook books and post it here if I can find it.
Sue
Sue, would love to have that recipe, if you can find it. Thanks !
Joy
Joy, below is the recipe from a cook book I bought in Madrid, Spain, in the 70's. I met my husband there when he was able to get a week's leave from his Navy Squadron when they were on maneuvers in the Mediterranean. My Mother-in-law came up from Alabama to stay with our 3 children.
RED WINE PUNCH
1 quart red wine 1 lemon, sliced thinly
1/8 quart carbonated water 1/3 cup sugar
Pour wine and carbonated water into large pitcher or punch bowl. In another bowl, crush the lemon slices and sugar together. Add to the wine mixture. Add ice cubes and stir well shortly before serving this satisfying thirst quencher.
(this was a big summer time favorite of my husband and me while he was still living).
Sue
:dontknow: Jack, at first glance I didn't see the "R"... so thought the word was Aging.... and thought that wasn't very nice of the person brewing........ :2funny: Love seeing the girls and crossed my mind that in most photos of them it was always Zoe on the right... planned or their idea? Beautiful Leonberger.... I did get to see one in person at a dog "introduction" a year or so ago. Very gentle giants.
Don, delicious looking meal. If I remember, you also enjoy cooking, right? Oops... where did your photos go? I just saw them!
Everyone can have my share of beer... only got my lips wet tasting one time & not anything I want to drink. The "home" brews are big around here, too, my grands love collecting & trying anything new. Having grown up going along with my father to visit his old buddies, I got to listen as each would brag about their latest brew. My father even gave it a try and Mother would have been justified if she had skinned him..... it was "aging in the basement" one day when her ladies club met.... and bottles started exploding down there. I'm not sure how she explained it but most of the ladies knew the score. :knuppel2: He would make root beer at the same time and we got to help use the bottle cap-er to seal them. Don't think he ever made it again. Dad was a little bit ornery and Mother would not have walked to town without white gloves and hat. She never had on a pair of slacks until after I was married. The typical housewife, dress & apron and smell of wonderful food cooking or baking all day. Both always had time to visit with any of our friends that stopped by, and our friends still stopped to see them long after we were gone from home. Ah, good memories.......
Shirley, hope your dad did not lose to many bottles. My son used to make his own, but now the two of us have to try anything new on tap. Yes the Leonbergers are gentle giants, they also have a Maine Coon Cat also a gentle giant.
Thanks, Sue, for the punch recipe. I have it saved and hopefully, will get to make some this summer. Sounds so good for a hot summer day.
Joy
For my sangria I use
-a bottle of red wine (marsala if I can find, or merlot or shiraz)
-one orange cut in slices
-one bottle of soda or orange juice
-a cup of peaches diced (frech or canned)
-a small can of pineapple pieces with the liquid.
I like to refrigerate overnight so as to let the fruit macerate.
Before serving I add ice cubes.
Then we can party!
My favorite meal: lamb stew with prunes, string beans and lemony roasted potatoes.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Bubble, that looks great.
Wanted to show how I prepare my drink, no recipe required. Sometimes I eliminate the mug. 8)
[attachimg=1]
At least you use an opener and not your teeth! :2funny:
Bubble, I love lamb, but my husband didn't. He came home one day unexpectedly for lunch and I was cooking lamb for our sons and myself. He sniffed the air and said, "I smell wet wool!" I had to make him a sandwich out of leftovers in the fridge! I never cooked lamb when he was expected after that.
Your lamb stew looks yummy--although I'm not fond of prunes! I do love lamb, but we don't often see it in our grocery stores here. My father-in-law who was a difficult man raved about prune pie, so I made him one when they visited us at the farm. That helped our relationship a little bit. My husband was an only child and his father ruled the roost until the day he died.
Sue
My son just arrived for our lunch date, grocery shopping, and a trip to library, so Ta Ta!
:roflBig: Bubble.... I've heard they do that (open bottles with teeth) in some mountain areas of the US. I've tasted the lemon baked potatoes but never knew how to fix..... something surprising to me & I really liked it, care to explain how you fix yours? Lamb around here is more expensive than any other meat, not sure why, but I learned to love it when we lived in England. Could count on one hand the times I've had it in the 60 years since.
Jack, I'm guessing that the basement was such a mess Dad probably hauled out the rest, if any left that didn't explode. Mom was not a nag but had her way of getting her point across without saying a word. She probably left Dad to his mess and he probably cleaned up without a word. ;) Now & then Dad & friends would share a few too many, which always made Dad a very happy person (some get mean, you know). Mom never said a word but I knew we would be having greasy eggs, bacon & gravy for breakfast. Dad ate it & turned a little green, "good breakfast" and would disappear.
They knew how far to go and as they got older, they enjoyed doing things together that they remembered doing when they grew up (like drying apples & other fruit instead of canning or freezing), gardening and growing veggies they ate (collards, kale, etc) when young. Many of those veggies are coming back into the diets of my grands, pickled beets one of their favorites. My brother discovered them on the grocery shelves & was eating them like dessert last time we were all together. I think Mom canned hers with the pickling spices, not just vinegar, they were sweet & tangy.
I recall seeing a photo of that Maine Coon Cat & would love to see one in person. How much does it weigh? My Tom weighs about 18 pounds & almost as different in size with old LaurenKat as seeing that Standard Poodle next to the miniature poodle.
Had the first cool night for months, opened the sliding door to my bedroom and Tom came on it, ready for breakfast about 2:30 am. He wouldn't settle down so I gave up & we went to the kitchen for a dish of salmon for Tom & I closed the folding wood door to that end of the house & went back to bed. Hour or so later Tiger was at the door & lay on the end of my bed watching whatever was moving around out back. Fitbit is so tired this morning I can't get it awake to tell me how little sleep I really got. A nap is on the "to do list" for today........
Sue, that recipe sounds good, much better than "straight" red wine. About half the time I have a big jug of Welch's grape juice (not the cocktail) in my frige... never could understand why anyone thought turning the juice into wine made it better.
Sue, you slipped in... my husband didn't like lamb, either, & one time I fixed a "leg" when we were in England... he quizzed me about what it was & I just repeated "a leg"??? Never tried that again. My grandmother made a prune cake that was considered "prize worthy" by everyone, except me. How I dreaded having to eat that tiny slice & knew it was a must do if the cake was sitting on it's wooden pedestal that was part of the big, carved hutch in the dining room. I just had a shudder & goose bumps on my arms at that memory. ICK! ;)
I wasn't feeling hungry, till I came in here... :eat:
Shirley, those baked potatoes: In a plastic bag I put some olive oil, 1/2 tbspoon of paprika (hot or mild according to taste), pepper, the juice of 1/2 nice lemon and I shake it all until well covered. I put the potatoes in a pyrex or a roasting pan in the oven until golden brown. If I want more lemony taste, I put some very thin slices of lemon under the potatoes.
My mouth is watering, Bubble... & have copied your recipe but "one more thing".... those look like red potatoes with skins on? and I did not know paprika came in mild or hot!!! and about how much olive oil with that amount of potatoes? I am off to the store. Thank you. Join me, Jackie?
No skin. I forgot to say I parboil them in the skin to almost soft (Maybe 15 min on the gaz) , then peel before "treating" them. I don't measure the oil: it depends on the amount of potatoes; it should coat them but not drip. I empty the bag in the pan and leave the surplus of oil in it!
Shirley...
...on my way, tables laid... :thumbup:
As we age we tend to eat a milder recipe. With this in mind here is my dinner tonight with several beer. It is a bowl of Chili with cheese, onions and jalopenia peppers. Wish me luck for the rest of the night. :)
[attachimg=1]
Jack wv...
Quoting: " Wish me luck for the rest of the night..".
..think you will need plenty of that if you manage to get all that down you, including the beer... :walking2:...
That chili looks good but you can hold the jalapeno for me! Cas loved them & would "show me how good" .... pretty sure he had a stock pile of Tums to fall back on later. Jack, one time a friend served chili with cheese as a dip (taco chips) & chopped slices of stuffed pimentos in it (not too many). The contrast of flavors was really........good
I bought everything for your potatoes, Bubble, and plan to go to the Farmer's Market in the morning to see if they have any "new" potatoes. Glad I asked. I did find smoked paprika as well as regular, but no "hot" (they sure are proud of that stuff, aren't they?). I was shocked to find a single lemon was 89¢, bought it anyway~~ Had to buy a new bottle of olive oil since the last one turned rancid because I kept it on a shelf over the stove/oven. Lesson learned.
I also filled the elephant with gas since I had a dollar off per gallon for 35 gallons. I still have another dollar off so will plan to run to MO to visit family before June is over. Have not seen my brother & his wife since last year & our sister & husband can drive up to KC from their house about 40-50 miles east of KC. There is a nice campground on the east side, with luck can find a site with a big tree for shade. I've stayed there a couple times & amazed it is so nice & so much space right in the Kansas/Missouri city... so cats come along. Keeping busy.
I'll think of you Jack, (along with Jackie...) middle of the night. Good luck. :eat: :beer: :cheers: :yum: :yikes:
Returned from the pub and it stopped raining, It was 72 and sunshine so off to the park. No problem with the chili, and settled in for the night. Checked with my son, his Maine Coon cat is 20 pounds, very gentle but the dogs will not mess with her.
Jack, I am not fond of chili because it is too spicy, but Wendy's has two for the price of one on Tuesdays. Tom likes it and he'll ask me first, but he'll buy two. I certainly would not want yours with jalapeno. I like tasty food, but not spicy - to me, tasty and spicy are not the same. You must have a cast iron stomach!
Mary Ann
Shirley, I've quite a roster of jalapeno jellies in my fridge! I not only use them as such with bread and butter, but also in veggie dishes and as meat rubs. I will deseed and chop up jalapeno peppers and use in my wok with potatoes, bell peppers and onions. You do not need more than a little. I also often use Hungarian paprika as well as smoked, hot or sometimes mild. I have five different types of curry pastes in the refrigerator too.
It's not so much hot as spicy.
Here is what I have presently;
From left to right; red pepper jelly, roasted garlic onion jam, sweet and spicy Alaskan Umami sauce,(comes in mild, hot or burn out!); and finally Saracha Aioli which is a spicy garlic pepper cheese sauce.
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, Those potatoes look so good. I wish I could reach in and eat some right now. ;). I guess by parboiling them you only roast them in the oven 15 or so minutes?
Jean, I go according to the color, not to the clock!
Jack, that dish looks so appetizing, but no hot stuff for me.
Angel, I would keep away from that shelf, ;D it would give me heartburn.
Shirley, unbelievable price. I have never bought lemon by the piece... nor any other vegetable.
Only lately have I started buying watermelon halved.
I am the same, no hot or spicy foods for me, well not with my Hiatus Hernia...but I was never into spicy foods anyway...Same as with hot curries, I can tolerate the mild's only...
Jack wv...yours still looks good though... ;)
Bubble, Jackie, I use the ones shown as a meat rub or as an ingredient in a vegetable dish or soup. In my view spice is nice!
Bubble, I am trying to be patient as I wait for lunch, am making a pig of myself with your lemon potatoes and they go with the pinto beans with ham shanks that I cooked yesterday as well. Add salad & I want you to know I ate 2 and 1/2 potatoes with the beans & ham, and small plate of lettuce & tomato salad. I did take a photo after eating the first potato... the little box of new potatoes totaled 8 slightly larger than golf ball size, not quite as big as a baseball. I will add more lemon, olive oil & paprika next time... I love them!
Patricia, I have been trying more spices when my sons & I go camping.... they are big meat eaters and enjoy grilling over a wood fire. I had a "taster" in Sam's club that was demonstrating Weber's Chicago steak... on hamburger. Delicious so I bought a jar & have since had some big "steak burgers" that I just fried in one of the new "orange" skillets with lid. I really think it tastes as good as steak. I guess I am getting tired of "fast food", but it really isn't much fun to cook for one.
Got up at 4:00 am with thunder & lightning so opened the door & let the cats know I was awake. Tiger came racing in but Tom hears storms long before I do so he was already hunkered down where ever he hides during storms. He showed up about 5:30 and Miss Callie waited too late to come so had to feed her when I got back from church. She doesn't want to hang around the pool with the others since our trip to CO... insists on going back out the front door instead. They do know what they want & manage to get their choices known!
Bubble, I don't often buy a single lemon but wasn't sure I could use the whole bags full. My mother used to keep a big stainless steel pitcher of lemonade in the extra 'frig in the garage for my father ... all summer.. he let her know when it was getting low. She always squeezed fresh lemons & then put the halves in the pitcher for extra flavor. I don't know if she put sugar in his, I didn't care for lemonade as a kid. I did squeeze the other half & used all the pulp for a refreshing glass of lemonade for myself... mine has lots of sugar in it. ;) Thank you for the recipe!
I was going to nap while waiting to eat lunch but have been sitting here thinking long enough to go back to the kitchen & heat up my leftovers... I know I will sleep better with a full tummy.
I am glad you liked the potatoes. I use fresh lemon juice in all my salads. Vitamins!
Where is your potato photo?
Olive oil, vinegar, and spices are always a tasty salad dressing. Sometimes I will add a squirt of lime or lemon juice depending on the salad or if it includes fruit or fruit and cheese.
New request:
Show me a photo of a hand or a foot!
Bubble I do not do selfies, but here is a foot. :)
[attachimg=1]
Jack wv...
...and you didn't need a " hand " doing that...
Jack, :thumbup:
:roflBig: :roflBig: :roflBig:
Jack that was very sly! :thumbup:
Edit; what a great photo Jack!
Bubble, sorry, could not resist. Now to get back to your request. Here is my hand in a position it is in an hour or so each day. How about that mouse pad?
[attachimg=1]
Would a front paw do?
[attachimg=1]
wow, you are all so creative! More please, I love it!
Pat that is great, like the pose.

Bubble that is an interesting plant, hope it does not bite.
I have seen it completely digest a big fly. That is what I was checking.
Beautiful photos!!! Love the cat, how regal she is!.
Bubble what is the name of that plant please?? Is it a pitcher plant???
Jack, I have the same mouse pad as you!!!
Amy, know we both love the Goldens.
This was taken several years ago. Sunset at Oglebay, and a hand reaching out.
[attachimg=1]
Amy, I told Farrah that someone thought she was very regal. First, she had a huge yawn and then she went and sat by the treat closet because well, cat. :thumbup:

Aristolochia is the name of that plant. Sorry I was mistaken: the plant does not digest the fly, only imprison it for a while.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristolochia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristolochia)
Amazing photo Jack. I am taking my golden to get trimmed right down this Sat. This will be her first time and I hope she will be able to stand for it. The lady comes highly recommended and understands that this is an older girl......the dog, not me ;D
Pat,I love going over to look after the neighbours animals when needed. We send the dog outside for a bit and then I sit on the top step and Callie a beautiful calico cat starts her motor and purrs while snuggling up against me..she also tells me where the treat drawer is.
Bubble ,thank you for that information, enjoyed reading all about it.
Amy if you have posted info in the past, I did not write down. How old is your pup, name and if possible a photo.
Mimi is 9 1/2 have had her year and a half. I have her groomed since she will not sit still for me. My last trip to the groomer she was sitting waiting and for the first time I saw her trembling. I almost took her home, but the young lady came out and settled her down. She said she does the same when they hit a snag. She gets up shakes it off and back down. When I picked her up she was fine. Here is a photo I took the other day.
Another story. When I was pres. of our association back in the 60's We had a wading pool at our playground and I had the architect from Oglebay come in and we planted 6 trees. For some reason they only lasted around 55 years and had limbs breaking and falling. Sorry to say 4 were cut to the ground and the photo is of Mimi sitting on the trunk.
[attachimg=1]
Were those maple trees, Jack? My father had the soft & hard maples and we had silver maples where we built..... that sounds like the life span for maples (as my father's lived). What a neat photo of the tree stumps you saw planted and your Mimi.
I took the camera down to the river tonight, took photos of clouds that popped up all of a sudden (thunder & all). A storm was building east of the city but radar looks like it quit backing up. I tried my little 12" laptop with XP & the working version of PSP... ONLY, it did not want to open the 32GB SD card from the camera! My son in law added extra memory but the SD card is still way bigger than what the computer has. Opened the new laptop & it doesn't have anything but Windows 10 and I couldn't get it to work. Had to allow PAINT to open the SD card & the file so big I had to scroll back & forth to see that first picture... could not get it to resize to a working file so gave up & came to this computer.... but will end up going downstairs & using old Vista that has the Paint Shop Pro that I work with. So frustrating, but this Windows 10 & the new laptop Windows 10 don't act at all alike. :uglystupid2: :crazy2: :idiot2: Doubt if you'll get to see those clouds tonight! :tissue: :banghead: :bash: :nopity: :whip2:
Shirley -
Paint, in Win-10, looks like it can shrink images. Rummage around the tool bars at the top.
I added my favorite image program, IrfanView, to my Win-10 puter. It's a very easy program to use.
Thanks, Rick, I gave up & came down to the old Vista with PSP 9 that Glenn Curtis encouraged me to buy. With help from some of the PSP ladies & taking those PSP Steps, I learned a few tricks & can't seem to catch on to the later versions of anything. I remember you & others use IrfanView but it really takes some one to "show me" (not an excuse, I really am from Missouri).... I managed to resize 3 photos... beautiful little goldfinch out my kitchen window... this is through a double pane Andersen window with a dark tinted storm window over so I'm always surprised how much color comes through. More storms moving in .. with hail... so better post & get off here.

Shirley,
First - Nice pic's. Good that you could resize them.
I started the PSP course but had to stop to have a rotator cuff surgery. I wasn't doing very well with it and never re-started.
A FWIW - the IrfanView (free) is much easier (doesn't do quite as much) and does all I need. It installs easy and un-installs easy. Ask your son to check it out the next time he's available
Beauty of clouds! You did well Shirley.
You know, you can always e-mail me photos for posting or even just for resizing for you...
Jack, love the photo of Mimi, she looks a lot like mine. Mine is 13 and will be 14 Dec 2nd. Her name is Amy, I borrowed her name when I came on the internet, just like I borrowed my Border Collies name for my email. As you know Goldens are so laid back , you could put her in a room full of people/kids and she would love every moment. Loves swimming, well maybe not so much now that her health is failing and no matter how many times you go in the van she is more than ready to go with you.
Shirley, guess they wanted fast growing trees, but was surprised at their short lives. Wonderful cloud photos, keep that camera busy.
Rick I am just using the windows 10 photo app and like the results.
Amy give your Amy a pat and wish her a few more good years.
Shirley, nice photos. Like the border around the Blackeyed Susans. Those clouds look fierce. We have had some of the strangest cloud formations lately.
Shirley, dramatic photos! You should move them or ask Bubble move them to Photos Old and New so everyone can see them and enjoy.
Sigh..not the hand again..sigh.
[attachimg=1]
WOW Angel!!! Lilliput cat! ;D
One can almost see a swat coming from the cat!! Is she thinking, just come a little closer???
Jack , I will and thank you. I tried to post a photo but I do think it needs to be resized so I will try again.
This is Mud Puppy...
Here Amy is trying to relax , and a lot older.
Amy and Babe are the best of friends ..
Thanks to all for comments about our clouds & "almost" bird. It kept darting off & on different flowers & could not get the camera to focus so fast through the 3 layers of glass window. Today the heat index is 108 so not sure I'll be getting out again. Filled the dumpster this morning with limbs we cut out of the berm last week & looks like one more week to finish the job. I came in soaking wet (women don't "sweat" but that was not "glow" all over my body, it was sweat!" We do have heat warning & I do hate hot so will decide later if I even visit the fish tonight.
I think it was over in the Soda Shoppe that Jenny commented about forgetting to get moth balls at Walmart... was NOT Walmart where I found them, but the Dollar Tree. They sure stopped the skunks, raccoons & other critters from hanging out in the berm.
Patricia, I forgot where I was posting the photos.... had sincerely meant to come up with a hand & got side tracked by going from computer to computer to get the job done. I get over in videos & upset at the times I can't get videos to work for me, and that is a problem with my server, not the computers. I only visit these 3 Photos & the Soda Shoppe, looks like I could keep them straight ..but not when frustrated. Is that your right hand? I don't think I could even hold & snap a photo with my left. Pretty hand, I have my grandmother's huge stand up veins in my hands, not pretty, but they serve me well.
Amy, love the pic of Mud Puppy... as Jack can tell you, I enjoy the ornery ones (like Zoe) and understand their zest for life. Your Amy looks as sweet as Jack's girls, they are such happy dogs (dare I call them a dog?)
I just have to mention that my weather thingy is not accurate, TV weather man just said "heat index 108" & actual temps to be at 102+ the next 2 days so heat index much higher. :uglystupid2:
Amy great photos and babe is also cute. Shirley, I was at my neighborhood bar and was leaving. My son said do not go to the park tonight, hot and humid. Try to tell that to Mimi, I went up the hill around 7. It was 84 and a cool breeze, so had a nice walk, photos posted in Photo discussion.
I'd love to hug and pet Amy's three dogs, one as much as the others. I've always been a dog person even though a cat lives here and I do a good job of petting and rubbing him.
When I look at the number of posts for me, I'm astounded. I know I talk a lot, but I didn't think it was that bad! There are a few here who have posted more, but not many. I'm a blabbermouth!
Mary Ann
great dogs Amy. I envy you! I wish I could still have one but could not take care of i t :(
Thank you Bubble and Mary Ann, they are a lot of work but worth every second of it. Mary Ann, we just have the two dogs and one cockatiel that is 24 years old. Peepers has leg problems and will fall off her perch and needs to be picked up and put back on, she is eating and seems fine. Amy on the other hand is not doing that well but day by day we get by and I know that one way trip will come.
Back to the hands and feet. Was doing some yard work. Moving two heavy stones and clipped the tip of my finger. Took my gloves off and this is what I saw. I read to apply ice which I did. Then there was support for draining the blood blister or letting it go to avoid infection. When I read it might take several weeks to dry up I sided with those suggesting to drain it. No pain, have a Band-Aid on it, but hot out so no more work outside today.
[attachimg=1]
OUCH!! I do know how those pinches can hurt & also how easily they can get infected, especially during hot weather. Hope you have some of the anti-bacteria stuff (I keep on hand from Walmart)..... These chores seem to catch us more than they used to or maybe we notice it more? Take care & keep close watch so it doesn't get infected, Jack.
I cut limbs from the holly bush (supposed to be a bush but as tall as the peak of the house). I cut it back every fall but didn't get the job done last year... had cut back pretty severe when I had the house painted & not sure that was last spring or the year before. We have an ancient super long pole (Craftsman) that extends all that way up, put chopper over a limb & pull the cord... but is heavier than it used to be ::) ;).... I got the job done & came in soaking wet again, boy, this yard work is killing me!
Amy, I dread watching our fur-babies grow old much too fast. The mama calico cat is looking very old & ratty with her summer bites & missing hair. She gets so upset when I try to put the stuff on the back of her neck and know that is why she wants to stay in the garage as hot as it is, because the flies & other bugs can't bite her in there. My fear is that someone else may have put it on & it would be dangerous to double dose as much as she has shrunk up this past year. She almost looks as old as old LaurenKat did before I lost her, I knew she was 18 & no clue how old Callie is. We know her last babies are at least 7 now, I have the photos with dates when she brought them to us, but the lady across the street said she had been feeding her for a couple years before the babies. We don't know if she was born feral or someone dumped her, but she had decided I am her BF for now & follows me anywhere I walk, to the river or down the street to a neighbor's house. I am a push over & know it.
Patricia, I keep looking at your hand & kitty, wondering if she is small or if that's an optical illusion. Tom & Tiger are so much larger than their mother is now & WAY larger than old LaurenKat was. She's been on my mind today, it was 5 years ago today that she came into the bedroom for her morning routine with Cas & came running out of the room so fast I know he was gone. She really did have a shocked look on her face, she knew and never looked for him again.
I didn't have my camera with me tonight but the catfish are back & practically jumping out of the water to catch the bread. Wish you could see how big they are and how tame they are as long as I talk to them, right near my feet. Don't see a lot of egrets & herons like other years, not even a lot flying over. Not even any Canada geese or ducks hanging out down there this year.
Jack, OUCH!!! Blood blisters are no fun , I usually get them when I am piling wood. Finger is in the right place at the wrong time.
Shirley, I too am a push over but I love my animals ,they are part of the family .They are not spoiled, just well loved.
NOT SPOILED??? Are you sure, Amy? ;) ;D ::)
Shirley, it was definitely an optical illusion as Farrah, five years now and six this September is fourteen pounds and no spring kittie! Here are two showing her paws, the first in silhouette and the second watching birds off the balcony. I whited out my tangled cords. I'd like to see after this, posts of your local most unusual trees.
[attachimg=1]
Paws are hands, right?
[attachimg=1]
Farrah is a beauty. Now your request for unusual trees. This is an evergreen bent over from the constant wind. I call it a question mark.
[attachimg=1]
Good one to start us off Jack!
Shirley, I am about as sure as one would feed salmon and tuna to kitties :) If we can't spoil out furkids then we shouldn't have them. Right now one has gone for a nap and the other one despite the new hair cut is laying in front of the fan .
I wish I knew how to get photos from my tablet to here but I can't figure that one out yet. Same as mailing a video from the tablet it just won't do it???
Amy, if you are able to attach it to an email to Bubble with the subject, posting photos for a subject line, she can post for you or help you on how to attach photos. Either way, she can help.
Patricia, I have done that in the past and Bubble has graciously posted them for me. I can get the ones on my pc posted but not having any luck with my tablet. I have some videos on my tablet that I can't email to me . Maybe the file is too big??
Amy, for videos I would ask Jack or Sato, and they would be able to help you as I'm more familiar with stills.
Amy perhaps Sato or Jean has a solution. I seldom use the pad, but also the phone has the same problem. You can use the cloud and if on the computer can then see the video, but even then too large to email. Do not know how Bubble would handle. For large ones on my computer I will put it on Vimeo and link to the discussion, You can shorten or edit the video but do not get much in size for an email. I also will use Any Video Converter to convert to a different mode and it sometimes will let me email.
Patricia ,thank you, I do think the length of the video has something to do with not being able to mail. I did a short video and it would email.
Jack, thank you. I think if I had of used my phone I would be able to send it but grabbed the tablet instead. As I told Patricia I did do a short video and it did send. The joys of these modern conveniences!!
I always upload my videos to Vimeo and link the URL same as Jack. Gmail allows 25mg but other email providers are much more strict regarding size.
[attachimg=1]

Jean, I think my problem is my videos are too large . I will have to learn not to make them too long.
Bubble... interesting trees.
Amy for emails only, doubt you can take video for even 10 seconds. If you have a large one you can put on Vimeo and limit who can view. I have even used youtube, but concerned with privacy.
Thank you Bubble for those, unique to northern climes, trees! If no one else has any unusual trees to post, perhaps Bubble can announce a new topic for the discussion.
ONE MORE..............THIRSTY TREE
(https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/gallery/90-090718225406.jpeg)
I had to laugh, Don, when I saw that title, thirsty tree! What a good shot! Do you have an idea for a new subject?
Good one Donklan! ha ha ha
Don a good title and a great shot.
show me a ... MACRO PHOTO
Bubble, just having my morning coffee and spotted your request. I went to my photos. Seldom use Macro but this one was with the camera set for Macro and reached in to get close. Will be interesting to see some true, up close, photos.
[attachimg=1]
I don't usually do macro: camera not good enough!
I tried this one
[attachimg=1]
then I did a little charm attached to a thumb drive:
[attachimg=1]
Bubble, I checked the camera settings, but too far over my head (Most things are anymore) I then took a photo of my mantle and the top of the anniv. clock has a small figurine that almost looks like it belongs in the painting. I then took a close up of the figurine. Had to then adjust with the windows 10 photo app.
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
No macro setting on my cell unfortunately.

Hope this posts!
Crocus
Love this subject & all photos so far, but still have to thank everyone for their trees! Bubble, I have a photo of me standing inside the trunk of a giant redwood laying on it's side... in a campground in Olympic Nat'l Forest. I'm guessing that is you? I never saw a trunk like the basket weave of that palm. Quite a thirsty tree, Don! Thank you all.........
I've never gotten as sharp macro shots with my Lumix cameras as I did with the original Sony.... but I will see what I can do. My tiger lilies are blooming right now so will go check them out. (Batteries are shot on the Sony & don't plan to buy more.) What to do with older cameras? :tissue:
Shirley I gave my old Nikon to my son and the previous Lumix to my daughter. Both were good cameras and have to encourage them to use them. Like the close ups keep them coming.
To follow Jack's lead; show us an unusual tree.
TREE 3.jpg
Next - Shiny new car
Now you continue with the topic or insert a new one.
I think Rick wants a "shiny new car" as the next one..
Thanks, I didn't see that.
Jack,I am glad to see your post. I know this type of folder is right up your alley. Welcome and I hope you will post lots.

Couldn't find a new car-----how about a Classic
Show me a RED flower
Love :smitten: the car Jean. That is a beautiful classic!!
Jean . . . a red flower? Lots of poinsettia's around this time of year. I usually buy a couple of containers, but not until closer to Christmas. While we're waiting, we can enjoy this rose. :rose:
We don't need to wait;

Oh, that turkey looks wonderful! What is that herb laying on top? I put inside & on outside all the spices & herbs that my spice rack book says to use for pheasant under glass..... but I just use the jars/dryed ones. Are those wedges apples or potatoes or what? Looks yummy & I'd love to have a slice!
If someone will jog my memory on how to post a photo in here.... I'll bet I have one of a face in my Gallery........but I am drawing a blank how to post it. :-[

Well, will try again when I know which of the links to copy. :crazy2:
Shirley, great to see you!! You get to pick what the next photo will be...
Oh, Amy, I forgot!!! How about, since I really have been wishing for some.... SNOW pics! We saw a few flakes one day so far this winter but stopped before I could grab a camera. Loving an excuse to play with photos but anxious to take some new pics. Still can't resize like when PSP worked on the old computer. Too bad I can't figure how to set up the last PSP I bought. No manual with pictures like the old ones.... plus there were some people with spare time to explain as well as the Steps classes. I got notices from Yahoo of the changes with the groups... always changes & I don't change with the times.
I did get in to see the Dr today, X-ray of my neck & blood work. Just took my 7th pill of augmentin but so far the headache, sore-stiff neck & back are screaming at me every 5-6 hours for a Bayer or Bufferin. Dr thinks I will live. ::) I'm baking him a whole pan of brownies tomorrow as thanks for getting me in any time I have a crisis. Got to get me fixed, it is SO hard to bend down with a bowl of water for cats, with a stiff neck & shoulders and have that darn knee remind me it also doesn't want to work right. This is the 6th week for the knee & check up with the orthopedic on Friday. Since he already said "these knees don't heal... not sure why I'm going.
Thanks for the heads up, Amy!
Herbs are freshly picked Rosemary, with wedges of potatoes around to absorb the juices.
Snow in Wisconsin
snow.jpg
Show me a drink
Oh, that is gorgeous, Bubble.... and actually made my whole body shiver as I scrolled down! Today I would not welcome a big snow because the snow blower is "out in the shed" & I don't think my old body could drag it out, fill with gas & move it to the front. It was 19° when I checked while ago with chill index of 12° .... bitter cold wind. Thanks for the tip about the Rosemary... do you keep little pots of herbs growing in your window? I had some one time & then planted them in large pots in the berm... they went wild & I even tried to dry some in the microwave but never used. I wasn't sure if that was a turkey or baking chicken.... my mother's baked chicken looked that good & tasted wonderful. Love potatoes baked "in the juices".. I do love to eat.
No herb pots - they die on me, but all the parks and public gardens in town are full of them, so no problem to snip a twig or two.

How about another cup of coffee.

Jean - Is that Butterfly Meadow, by Lenox? I'd love to drink some coffee from that lovely cup!

MaryPage, love your chair. It looks so welcoming and comfortable. If I'm ever up that way, I'll come by and maybe you'll let me sit in it for two minutes!
I have a chair and ottoman, which actually was a hand-me-down from a friend of my husband. They were re-decorating and wanted to be rid of it It didn't match my living room decor, so I thought to put it in the extra bedroom where the colors "would go". It's back in the living room now, regardless of color scheme, as I had to get rid of the last remaining recliner (which was nearly at the point of spearing one's fanny). But, to finish off, the gifted chair has also been well-sat-in by the previous owners, and not where you'd spend hours reading or TV watching. I will sit there for 30-45 minutes and then move to the couch (nearly as bad). When my daughter was buying furniture 5 or so years ago, she took me along, and I found and sat in this darling chair which had a lovely patterned upholstery, was built on a smaller platform than most. She called a "happy chair". She wanted me to buy it, but I passed. Wish now I had bought it. I doubt that they would have anything similar now.
Show me a well loved possession!

Show me an item on YOUR desk...
Well, Bubble, I'm not using the computer with a desk, this laptop in on the table & right now a mess I wouldn't show anyone! Seriously, my youngest son stops by on Wed nights after work so I will have it cleaned off tomorrow. I'm ready for bed so will say "good night" and turn off lights. We'll see what tomorrow brings. I didn't get out of the house until tonight, soaked my knee in Epsom salt most of the afternoon & decided I needed to move. No fish, the water is still high. I hope to get out tomorrow, have several stops to make.
It does not need to be a computer desk...
