Title: FYI: Server Move
Post by: Oldiesmann on November 14, 2016, 02:56:16 AM
Quick heads up for everyone.

In the coming days I will be moving the site to a new server. I am staying with the same host, just moving to a server with a newer version of the operating system. I will post here again once I have a better idea of when the move will happen (probably either overnight Wednesday into Thursday or overnight Thursday into Friday), and will also put the site in maintenance mode prior to the move so nothing gets lost in the process. Once the process has started the move should take less than 24 hours, depending on how long it takes your ISP to process the DNS changes.

Got the new server mostly configured, but I'm going to take another couple of days to go back over everything to make sure I didn't miss something. I plan on starting the move late Wednesday/early Thursday (around 12:30am EST Thursday morning probably). I'll post here again before I start the move and will put the site in maintenance mode at that time.

Server move will be starting shortly. Everything should be back within 24 hours :)

First, thank you for taking such good care of us and keeping us together.  I love this site and I'd miss it.

Next, I don't know if it is due to the move but my "notify" isn't working.  I tried turning it back on but the button only turns it off.  Have I don't something amiss or is it truly missing?

The attachments button for the posts is also not working.

"The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

I'll fix the attachments thing shortly. Not sure why notifications aren't working but I'll look into that.

Avatars and attachments should be fixed now. Looking into the notifications issue.

Still not sure why notifications are failing, though it looks like Google put restrictions on mail from the old server's IP address due to suspected spam. That shouldn't apply to the current server due to it having a different IP address, but I'm working on setting up a domain verification thing as well which should help with that. I've also changed the mail settings here a bit to see if that will help at all.

Since the move to a different server, all of the weather "thingies" changed to just a link.  Can this be fixed?

Didn't see this until now. Is this still an issue? It's showing up fine for me in both your signature and Angel's signature

Micheal, my font size code when posting no longer works altho it seems to work for others. I always use b,I font type, and font size and for the past week, I haven't been able to use the font size14.

angelface--Unless I don't understand, your above post is size 14 font.

Joan, Larry uses the size 14 font. You can see the difference from his to mine. I put in the 14 but it comes out the 8 pt.

Angel, what you have posted is definitely 14 pt, not 8 pt.

I copied from Larry's post to show you what I had before when I used 14pt. This is the default 8pt.

Look at Larry's post per the link here, http://www.seniorsandfriends.org/index.php?topic=34.msg76024#msg76024  to see what I always had before with 14pt.

Maybe it's her computer.

Any size looks like 8 until you post it.
Title: Re: FYI: Server Move

First, I believe the default is 10 pt.   :)

This in 8 pt.

This in 10 pt.

This in 14 pt.

Adding "bold" will also make each size appear a wee bit larger.

Patricia, what are we supposed to see when we click on your link?  The text in Larry's post is exactly the same as what you had posted above in 14 pt.

As Jane suggests, it may be your computer.  It certainly doesn't seem to be anything relating to the site and it's nothing Michael can control.

It may be my computer, but I don't understand how I would see what you list as 10pt. while you are seeing my posts as 14. Why would I see some as 14pt and not mine? I select all. I then use   [font face Arial Black][font size14]  What I have seen this past week or so is what Jeanne Lee lists as 10pt while Larry and others show the 14pt. I was used to seeing with mine. Why would my computer suddenly change only the type I see in mine? That doesn't make sense to me.

Patricia, I sure can't explain why your computer, and only yours, would suddenly develop that kind of glitch.  Hopefully it will eventually decide to snap back.  Maybe a technician in your area can find the problem and correct it.

Jeanne Lee, while doing a post in the Soda Shop I noticed my font size and bolding had suddenly after a week and a half returned.

What browser do you use when you post or view here?

Opera and Fox, today they are back to looking like 10pt. I tried in other places but it was only here that my posts were what looked like 10pt when I coded 14pt. Then yesterday, they went back to 14pt.

Okay, I started this post using the Fox browser, on impulse after reading your post, I closed out and went to Opera where it shows in 14pt. again. Okay Rick, what is going on? Both browsers are set the same 18pt.

FFox is making lots  and lots of problems lately.  Mainly with S&F. Whenever I try to log here it says: server not found - site unavailable.  If I go to GChrome  straight after, the page opens as by magic.
It is not my computer, Don experienced exactly the same thing. Most frustrating of course.
My font  seems to show smaller for me as well but it didn't bother me that much.

Bubble, you probably have better eyesight than me! Also I post larger because many said last fall that some colors such as green, yellow and or pink bothered their eyes and they couldn't read as well as having trouble with small print!

I would stay strictly with the Opera browser as I really like it but the Grammarly add on which I use in my class and for editing doesn't work in Opera. I no longer use Chrome or my Microsoft outlook email account after having to spend $79.00 for the company Hal recommended cleaning out a virus infection. One of the techs said that Chrome is vulnerable due to the type of coding they use being available on the web so easier for spammers to get into. While Opera and Fox also use open coding, theirs is not unprotected like Chrome's.

A NO answer   ???  - I don't know.   But a FWIW - at one point a while back (probably a long while) Browsers had abilities to force certain font actions. I seem to recall that it could be a bit confusing as to just what those settings did.  At any rate,  I would dig deeper into what options are available in the different browsers.

Very cryptic Rick, "a no answer" and I had to look up your FWIW. I looked up Fox settings and it only has a function to change font so no luck there. Who knows why it isn't correct on Fox?

For what it's worth - For those who may not have run across it before.  "FWIW"  means -for what it's worth (which might even be nothing).

Angelface -- In FF (Firefox) go to Tools<Options<Content.  To the right of "Fonts and Colors", click on "Advanced".  Look at the bottom part of the window that opens - there might be something there that applies to your situation.

Rick, that is where you set your font size which I have set at 18. It shows as 18 everywhere but in my posts here in S&F. I still code at 14pt. for others even though I don't see it. I think Bubble is right about "FFox is making lots and lots of problems lately.  Mainly with S&F. Whenever I try to log here it says  server not found - site unavailable.  If I go to GChrome  straight after, the page opens as by magic.

Strangely enough, when I don't code for 14pt. it looks larger to me. However, it probably doesn't to others.
