Growing Old

Are we as good as we used to be
Is growing old a state of mind
Look carefully in your memory
An answer can be found

There in the glow of yesteryear
Is the pride of what used to be
The radiant youth who laughed a fear
And challenged all so confidently

The brashness of youth we traded away
For a much more impressive measure
The head that is now so wrinkled and grey
Has the heart as its greatest treasure

So now as you walk through the golden years
Go with love and with empathy
Embrace mankind - Confront its fears
We're better than we used to be

  LIFE
 A little laughter,
a little song,
A little teardrop
When things go wrong,
A little calm
And a little strife,
A little loving —
And that is life.

Good Morning!  I can't pick out a favorite from all BUBBLE's new offerings.  I've found something to identify with in each of them!  Thank you for all your good work, Bubble!  I sure wish you lived closer (or I did) so I could give you a hug!

I have to pack this thing up and stow it upstairs on my bed until the cleaners leave.  So have a good day, everyone!  Bye for now!

Good morning

Windows and doors open here this morning, I am sure the  C/A will be on later today.

Not a good night, up every hour with Babe wanting out....hope tonight is better. I think a nap later on in the day will happen.

Need to take the garbage away and then home to work about.

Jane and Patricia, thank you for your kind words. I really enjoy quilting , unless one has  date with Jack The (seam) Ripper. Unsewing is no fun. :)
All the fabric has been cut for the log cabin blocks and just need to pu them together now.

Bubble, thank you for the new start, you always do such a great job! I like the Helen Steiner Rice ,have a few of her books. My favourite of hers is This Too Shall Pass.

Better get ready to meet the day

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Well, the cleaners left and just as I started upstairs to get the bed cleaned off and bring my computer down, the kids arrived so I left everything until it was time for Mikey's nap and he and Ali left.  Emma is over on the couch with Jim while he watches the TV and she watches a kid show on the iPad!

LLOYD, both my mother and my grandmother were diabetic and it didn't take much to raise the blood sugar level.  I remember my grandmother saying often, "I just had a little bite of that and my sugar is up".  I guess you just have to be extra careful when there's a party!

I think I'll go over and sit by Emma and let my eyelids droop a bit.  I'm having a "call to sleep" and I'm having a hard time ignoring it!

Keep on keeping on, Everyfriend!

OOPS, almost forgot to tell you...Ali brought me a jar of jar of her canned salsa.  She said her husband, Dan wanted me to have it.  So it's going along home with me for a treat one day!

I really don't go lookin' for trouble but manage to keep my feet close to the fire all the time.  Went to Sam's Club this morning for a few "necessary" items and came away with a Power XL Air Fryer Pro/12 qt.  I've watched y'all do wonders with air fryers but didn't pay close attention to brands or what you do with them. I'm not sure if any of you ever baked Grands biscuits in them but was hoping this would be usuable out camping, maybe even on the picnic table.... with electricity at the MO campgrounds or with the generator in Colorado, if I don't get to CO I'd loan to my sons to use out there. Is the 12 qt. too big? Cas used to say that "my (meaning me)eyes glowed when I saw a sale sign"  :-[  ::) .... this time the price was $150 marked down to $99 but sale only good through the 3rd. The girl assured me I could bring it back if I didn't like it... and I won't even opened the box until I get opinions from y'all.... so help me, please!  Is this a good one (box says #1 but who trusts boxes?)

This is a day that'll take your breath away... hot & humid and now the wind turned on. I really am a zombie today but got a busy week of chores & no energy to get'em done. All the baby birds are gone & guess the Mamas & the Papas are just goofing off until time to go south, they sure worked hard this summer!

Thought we were going to get a storm but it blew over but will  vist us in the night or tomorrow..

Shirley, that is a good sized one and I bet you will have fun with it. Jane has me hooked on Grilled cheese sandwiches in it. I have her hooked on our canned potatoes in it, lightly oiling then sprinkle garlic powder and parmesan cheese. I like fish, french fries plus baked potatoes. I don't heat up the kitchen either! Hamburgs are great then when just about done thow the bun in with warm it up. I am sure Jane can give you some help here.

I've never had a better grilled cheese sandwich than the one done in my air fryer.  Hot dogs are great in there and sausages for breakfast.  I also do zucchini the same way I do the potatoes.  And if you've ever had a Pi-che-am like I learned to make at camp, you can do them in the air fryer.  Pi-che-am = Pineapple, cheese and spam.  We did them on the campfire at Girl Scout Camp but they're a lot easier and a lot quicker in the air fryer.  Spam first, turn it over put the pineapple on it  wait a minute and add the cheese.  You can eat it on a bun or just "as is"!  Lots more stuff to do.  I didn't look at the "click-ons but I sure will.

Wishing you all a good night!  Sleep peacefully and wake to a new day!

Good Morning Everyfriend!  It's going to be another hottie here today!  The temp is supposed to reach 106 degrees!  Cindy has a quickie DR. appt. this morning and she already missed it so we're all riding her about keeping this one.  She said she has notes to herself all over the place.

LLOYD, sorry you had to come in this morning and talk to yourself.  That's no fun!  I hope all's well in your house...NANCY feeling well and your sugar back down where it belongs!

I'm not sure what I'll be up to today but I'm sure it will be fun!  Maybe the kids will be over later or maybe we'll go over there.  I heard ALI say "We have to visit with GG as much as we can this week because she's going home on Saturday!

Yesterday, we were all in the same room when Mikey called Cindy MIMI for the first time.  We've all been bugging him as to who she is and he keeps calling her "NANA" who is his other Grandmother>  Yesterday, it just came out twice in a row and when Cindy celebrated with him he just laughed and looked at her as if to say "I always knew that!  I was teasing you!"  After that, it came out regularly!  I'm so glad I was in on that!  Lots of good stuff happened here!

Both doggies always come up to my room when they hear me in the morning!  I'll miss that too.  And I go in to say "goodnight" to Cindy every night.  I'll miss that for sure!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

SHIRLEY, one thing I forgot to say...I bought a smaller A/F but the size kind of depends on how your going to use it.  If you think it would work in the camp grounds, it sort of depends on how many are eating and what size their appetites are.  I also gave Frankie one for Christmas last year and she uses it a lot!

Shirley, 12 quart would definitely feed the family.  If it was just for your use you can get them in 2, 4, 6, quarts and on up.  An air fryer is simply a small convection oven.  If you ever have used a conv. oven you know that you have to cook at a lower temp. and for a shorter time.  I set my air fryer at 50 deg. lower than I use in the big oven and set the timer for fewer minutes and check it often.  It can over-cook things very easily.  Other than that they are great for everything that you might fry or broil because they cook fast.  I use it for hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, french fries, etc.  I tried cookies but it burned the top before it cooked the inside so I still prefer the big oven for that.  I need to do some more testing for time and temp. on that. Also, I love it because it doesn't heat the kitchen and it is easy to clean.  I HATE cleaning an oven and I don't like to use the self-cleaning because it really makes the kitchen hot and smelly.

Good morning from a cloudy Interior. Yesterday about six, after a day of blue skies and a temperature of seventy-five, a menacing bank of high black and purple clouds came in, thunder roared, lightning flashed, and it suddenly poured. It poured so hard that the rain bounced back up a good foot or more. It lasted until almost eight, and I still have standing water on my balcony this morning.

This standing water happens after any heavy rain as the balcony is made of plywood and joists with an overcoating of gray marine paint. Unlike before, there is no place for the water to run off, and it stays until it evaporates. I feel it could become a hazard, and the mud the construction workers had on their boots smears, dries, and re-smears with any moisture. Who knows what will happen if we have any real snow this winter? For me, it just looks terrible and cuts off any view unless you go right up to the window.

Claire still hasn't received the go-ahead to return home, and as the state fair begins in the latter part of the month, those camping with their animals at the fairgrounds may have choices to make as to accommodations for themselves and their pets and stock. Plus, with three million Interior acres burnt and still burning in places, the various farm crops this year, if any, have been abysmal. This summer has not been a good one. And the last two winters and last spring were full of unwelcome record settings and surprises.

I don't have an air fryer because I'm downsizing with a policy of anything coming in equals something going out, so I can't advise you, Shirley. However, I would think of it for how you would use it, daily or occasionally, primarily for yourself or friends and family. For myself, I no longer have a microwave, blender, or multiple utensils, baking dishes, pots, and pans. I primarily use my convection toaster oven, immersion blender, and stovetop. My most used appliance is my coffee maker. I drink twelve cups of strong black coffee daily; that's my drug of choice, and I'm lucky not to have any issues with caffeine or my sleep patterns.

Jane, it sounds as if you're having a lovely time. Have you thought any more about fostering? So, many pets adopted during the pandemic are being returned by their owners, and the need is great. There is a country-wide program that matches seniors with senior animals, getting them out of the shelter, showing them what a real home looks like, and making them a better candidate for adoption plus, it allows the fosterer to have an idea if adoption is for them. And the shelter provides maintenance costs and vet visits.

Today is another catch up day and meet up with friends to exchange items.

I was never one for hash brown patties but since the air fryer...oh my they are really good!!!

Patricia, standing water on your balcony can be a skating rink in the making when winter comes...dangerous to have!

Hope Gloria is doing alright..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I didn't check out last night because the day just closed in on me.  Ali had an idea that I needed to visit her favorite local Oklahoma souvenir place yesterday so she came over in the morning and the ladies and kids went shopping and then had lunch out.  I didn't buy a lot of souvenirs...2 cups, a sticker and a coaster...all useful items except maybe the sticker but I have a window with stickers.

Then after they left to put Mikey to bed for his nap I picked up a ton of toys and did a bit of packing for the trip home and finished an item I've been knitting on and by that time, the cook (JIM) had supper on the table.

Now I'm eating breakfast with two loving, but hopeful doggies milling around and they've already unplugged my computer twice.
We're making spaghetti sauce to take over to Ali's for supper tonight because they're spending the weekend (starting tomorrow) with the other side of her family and this will be my last visit with the kids!  It's bee very special to me!

AMY, we're getting rain here, too!  It's dark and cloudy and there are a few rumbles of thunder involved.  Not a pretty day but the rain is badly needed so we can't complain!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning; I have Lloyd's weather which, minus the boomers, is a normal August cooldown for us in the Arctic. They were supposed to do the sidewalk in the back as the weight of the snow last winter broke the fences down. I don't know why they expected to get them finished, cured, whatever the meaning in the rainy season.

Claire has managed, along with others, to secure a truck for the livestock and will leave Saturday afternoon. I will miss having company, and she is funny, bright, and articulate, not one to play scrabble with unless you're prepared to lose.

Jane, I know what you mean as our ravens have returned from the mountains to the valleys. We don't have blue jays here; we do have a gray jay.

And some of the local foresters have said that animals are denning early this year. The geese and ducks haven't gone south yet, but the news says they're coming down from the north and gathering into large flocks at the sanctuary in preparation for that long flight.

Amy, I spent yesterday running around with Claire, doing errands, and groceries, securing feed and provisions for her trip. Today and tomorrow, she will pack, box provisions, and gather stuff to ensure she has everything. Farrah will miss her and perhaps find me a poor substitute as she's been hanging out in her lap and sleeping with her instead of me. Sunday will be a day of rest.

I hope Babe is better today; it's hard when they can't tell you what ails them.

Lloyd, I'm sorry, I can't help identifying the bird. The birds locally aren't as brightly colored and are more forested types.

Give Phyllis a gold star!  I didn't see house finches growing up in Missouri but see a lot of them around Wichita. The males are almost as bright red as the gold finches are yellow and the cardinals are red. I put out all kinds of feed and get to see quite a lot of different types of birds. Best entertainment I know of!

Lloyd, they change colors "the male is a vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter. They do migrate and usually the only time I notice them is during the breeding season when the males are that bright yellow. I have several good bird books that are photos and several others that are drawings, a life long habit of recognizing birds and also tree leaves.

I think this might be the earliest I've ever noticed birds getting ready to migrate EXCEPT except they aren't gathering on the lines to keep warm. Just too hot, was 106 & the "feels like" was a lot hotter!  Another 10 day forecast of the 100s or even hotter. Happy you are seeing signs of an early winter, too, Amy, BRING FALL ON!

Heading to bed, one worn out old lady tonight.  Took the car in for oil change, they are supposed to wash it but I didn't notice until this morning "they didn't".  I'm taking a friend & couple of her paintings along with me & mine to little town about 24 miles away for a show, will hang for a month but they only show & tell (not sell..future commissions should anyone want)...This is the type friend that in the 40-50 years of being friends, she never has a thing out of place, so I wanted the car cleaned up & had to wash & vac out myself this morning. Then I had to put the back seats down to put my monster paintings in. All I have to do in the morning is shower & pick her up so kind of a day off for me.

Sweet dreams & God Bless.

Good morning..

Another lovely day here. Will pick up my cucumbers this morning then my day will be putting them into dill pickles.  This along with meals should keep me busy for the day.

Patricia, Babe is doing somewhat better but still keeping a close eye on her.

Jane, loved reading your posts and all that you are doing these. You are going to be one busy lady when you get home with canning.

Phyllis, we used to have all kinds of goldfinches but not so this year?

Lloyd, I enjoy critter watching, can past the time away very easy watching the birds and other animals around.

Best get ready..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I sure hope your yesterday was better than mine!  My neighbor called my daughter to tell her that I had a light pole lying flat in my driveway.  It meant that all electricity, phones and whatever runs on electricity was OFF!  Thank God the pole didn't land on the house.

Last night and this morning have been spent dealing with this problem!  There is an electrician there now, replacing the pole and rehooking all the wires and then we have to wait for the Electric company to check it out and send out the vibes again!  I was a bit "long distance" busy last night and this morning but I think all's well again.  Thanks to my kids and neighbors and everyone else involved!  When I go home this weekend, I can actually GO HOME!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!  (My today is already better than yesterday!!!)

Good Morning,

Jane,  :o What in the world caused a light pole to fall across your driveway?????  Was anyone else affected?  I would think the city/electric company would have noticed and sent repairmen!
I do wish you/Cindy/granddaughter(?) a safe trip back to PA and hope you find everything "hunky dory" when you get there.

#1Son, all three Grands and two "significant others" are in Leadville CO for the big Boom Days weekend. This had been planned for son's 60th birthday (next Tuesday) long before DIL's cancer returned and she insisted they go ahead with plans. One of her best friends is staying with her and, yesterday, two other friends brought brunch and they had a good time together.
DIL is still adjusting to med treatment but has a wonderfully positive attitude.

This is #2 son/dil's 22nd wedding anniversary.

Lots of Good Things to be thankful for today.

Hope it's a good one for everyone.

Hello everyone, or as an Italian YouTuber often says, "Hello Everywhere!"

Yesterday was another eighty-degree blue skies day until six pm. Then we had a purple-skied roar of a thunder boomer with plenty of special effects in lightning and rolling booms. This went on until eight pm. This is a high-temperature rarity here; typical August weather changes as it cools down into the fifties from summer's heat and moves into the arctic's autumn season.

The usual, I suppose I should retire that term, thundershowers are brief, violent twenty-minute deluges during summer, not these hours-long extravaganzas this late in the season. We're told to expect the unexpected as we move through climate change, and what happens in the polar regions is often a harbinger of what will happen through the earth.

National Geographic and others have identified and located a new ocean appearing around frigid Antarctica. In Africa, a large trench is deepening and growing where scientists believe the African continent is very slowly splitting apart and will eventually form yet another new ocean.

"At approximately 20.3 million square kilometers (7.8 million square miles) and about twice the size of the U.S.A., the new ocean is the world's fourth-largest (following the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian, but larger than the Arctic Ocean). The Southern Ocean's lowest point is 7,235 meters (23,737 feet) below sea level in the South Sandwich Trench."

https://www.thoughtco.com/the-new-fifth-ocean-1435095

https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/african-continent-very-slowly-peeling-apart-scientists-say-new-ocean-n1234128

Scientists say a new ocean is being born. New satellite measurements are offering valuable tools to study the tectonic rift in one of the most geologically unique spots on the planet.

In one of the hottest places on Earth, along an arid stretch of East Africa's Afar region, it's possible to stand on the exact spot where, deep underground, the continent is splitting apart.

This desolate expanse sits atop the juncture of three tectonic plates that are very slowly peeling away from each other, a complex geological process that scientists say will eventually cleave Africa in two and create a new ocean basin millions of years from now. For now, the most obvious evidence is a 35-mile-long crack in the Ethiopian desert.

I called a recommended electrician this morning and left him a message as to what had happened.  He returned my call in less than 15 minutes and after we talked a few minutes and he became aware of exactly what I was dealing with, he told me that he had one of his men in my area and he was going to call him and tell him to drop everything and get over there.  He did and they put up a new light pole and attached all the wires and turned on the  switch and then notified the Electric supplier.

The supplier was supposed to be there around 3 "or so".  They promised it would be hooked up today

CALLIE, we all have a pole on our property and we are responsible for it.  I've lived there 25 years and the pole was there before that.  My daughter says they told her it was rotted out.  She sent a picture of the new one and I notice that it's much taller than the old one and when I think about it, most of the poles in the neighborhood are taller than mine was.  Maybe I've just been lucky!

We're packing up the car after supper for the trip back to PA so this will be my last communication with all of you probably until after Sunday!  I'm going to shut down and get this packed up as soon as I look up a couple things I still need and check my email.

I wish you all a great weekend!  Enjoy every minute of it.  I might check in here on my phone but I won't be posting!  I'll miss you all!

Sorry about the mess going on at your house, Jane, not sure if the 'puter is already in it's case or if you will read this before the drive home.

Had a call/answering machine had a call on it.... from Rick/Rammel's son that Rick is in the hospital again. He sounds very concerned but hopefully it is "one of our kids usual concern"...... (their turn to worry, right?). He will keep us posted, really is a sweet person, and pass our thoughts on to Rick. Prayers for Rick (and "little Rickey").

I drove a couple big paintings to the art show in El Dorado about 20-30 miles from Wichita. They just hang for a month or up to 2 months, not really a show to sell but maybe commissions to do for Christmas later this year. Many years ago I was given a photo of my aunt & uncle's old stone house in central MO, black & white that my oldest brother had taken from the top of the hill going down to the house. The first painting I did from that black & white photo was to colorize the photo into a 24x36 oil, then because the colors in most houses that year were the mauves, darker burgandy & that funny green. A neighbor had just redecorated their house in those colors so she had scraps of wall paper & trim that I spread all around me. I really do absorb colors around me & it is strange to watch a painting go from the greens & blues to browns & fall colors.

After my aunt died (my mother's oldest sister) her husband sold that big old stone house, moved into town and the new owners took apart every big old stone and built a new house on that farmstead. Such a shame, my mother was inconsolable so I started painting it into every landscape that needed an old stone house in it. When I got this particular photo I had better details of all the out buildings & surroundings. Sadly, my mother never lived to see the paintings. I debated whether to donate one of them to that county court house so everyone could remember what that place looked like. Everyone that lived there is now dead, so for now they are "just on display". A busy-busy day & I am ready to sleep.

My kids have checked in so I'm heading to bed. Still hot out there but have hopes it will be an early fall. We're going to envy the girls all winter after doing so much canning...

Sweet dreams to all, special "good night" to Rick & Rickey. Great news, Patricia!  Wonder if the freezing temps will help get rid of Covid & Monkey Pox germs. Good night to you, Lloyd, and to everyone peeking in!

Yesterday , heading into town I had to break for a doe, this morning there were hens by the side of the road. Entertaining trips.

I'm thinking! I'm thinking!  Not doing much sleeping at night so making up for it during the day. No news from Gloria's daughter OR Rick's son..... and I'm not getting much done around here.

I went to church & breakfast with son, his wife & their 2 grands. Have not seen the kids for quite a while & so grown up. These are the 2 red heads.... with the bluest eyes you ever saw. She is a soccer star & the little guy is just a character. What goes through his mind comes out his mouth (NON-STOP), exactly like his Grandad! Some justice in this life!   :smitten:  Love it.

I'm off to bed, sweet dreams to all and God Bless. I will see if I can catch "Little Rickie" in the morning to see how "our Rick" is doing & report the findings.

Jackie, not sure which one is checking on US but happy to see one of 'em visiting!  Rick's wife died about the same time my last brother died so we offered each other sympathy and advice and I felt like I found another brother and nephew when Rick went to the hospital and I had a chance to talk to "our" kid. I did tell him we'd be pleased if he'd update us but I didn't know how to help. Bubble had to help get me back in one time (new password & all).

Lloyd, I about slept the clock around yesterday and went right to sleep last night, only got 4 hours & 6 minutes sleep. Woke up to a clap of thunder and that was so welcome I got up to see if radar would show a big patch of rain BUT... all we got was that one clap of thunder, NO rain drops.  :'(

I'm heading to the basement to turn the front sprinklers on and gonna grab a package of French toast out of the freezer. Few years ago I noticed they carried French toast in the freezer section at the store so tried my own. I put about a dozen eggs in my mixture for a loaf of bread so get plenty protein. Been freezing my own ever since.

Looks like the night is hanging on a little later already (wishful thinking?) I've been up for an hour so better get a move on or the day will start without me!

Good morning...
we had the rain plus the thunder! Needed the rain but not the music that goes with it. Babe had her Rescue Remedy and settled down, so far the storms don't bother Jesse.

We had a nice visit with Kyles sister yesterday, she had just made applesauce and brought us a jar still warm.Sent her home with a jar of Jane's rhubarb juice.

Will try and get the blocks finished for the quilt today...will see how it goes.I had a date with Jack the (seam) ripper the other night on the verandah. My sewing machine had a hic cup and now all is well....but I am behind.

Beets can also be canned but they say it is to rain all day..always another day to gather.

Jane should be home now  bet the drive was tiring.

Better get ready for the day.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good news about Rick!  I've been reading on my phone but couldn't post!

The good news about the electric pole is that it was up and the electricity was back on and everything electric was working in the house.  However, the phones and the computer and the WIFi were NOT working.  So we had to call the company that supplies all that stuff and then wait for them to show up and fix it.  There was a very nice young fella here today and he took care of all that and I have my phones and my computer back.  I just have to figur out how to get my printer connected.  But Cindy is still here and she can figure that out for me.

We're all going over to Cathy's for supper tonight and I better get ready for that.  I hope you all had a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow.

Just a quick note that my Dad, Rick, is doing well right now. Visited him at the hospital yesterday, and will be visiting again in a coup;e hours. He looked and sounded much better. It appears to be an infection that comes up sporadically (history of cellulitis/infection)...insidious and without much warning. He is on IV antibiotics now and they are running lots of tests...checking for clots and any other ancillary issues. Oddly, Dad went for a preoperative exam Wednesday afternoon, and all was good. Twelve hours later it started. Initially a bout of chills and by the next day...complete lethargy and more chills...and a slight change in voice (rough and angry kind of sound). Not to messed around with. We called EMS immediately. I'll keep you updated and Thank You for all the good thoughts...Richie (Jr.)

So glad you popped in, Richie, I wasn't sure how to spell your name!  That almost sounds like what started my son's problems a couple years ago that HIS doctor neglected to take serious & caused him to have the open heart surgery & a lifetime of having a valve replaced. I can't say anything nice about that doctor so can't say anything. So happy your father was smart enough to know when to go in!

Good Morning Everyfriend!  What a "ggod" morning it is to get up and see RICHIE'S message first thing!  I'm so glad they know what it is and what to do for your father!  We truly do enjoy his "company" on this forum!  Tell him we are all praying for his rapid recovery!

The guy that was here to fix the phone, etc. yesterday called our attention to the fact that we have bees nesting in the overhang on the shed and trying to spread to the overhang on the house.  So now we're waiting for a return call from an exterminator.  If it isn't one thing, it's another!

When we are both up and attem, Christy and I are heading for the grocery store to fill up the gaps in my fridge and cupboard.  And then later today, she's heading home to Maryland.  Right now, I'm awaiting the arrival of Cooper.  Frankie said she missed having someone around who loves him and she's sure he did too!

JACKIE, thanks for the "welcome" home!  It's good to be back.

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

JaneS do not extermanate the bees get a bee hive and have them transfured to it, moove it to a ruual spot or out in your back yard and feed them they will make you some woundrful  honey. I had honey bees but that juerk that used to be a friend stole the Last hive i Had,  our grand deaughter and son in Law and her futher better half are rasing bees also our son in law is rasing bees. I am going to make some more hives and buy some more swarms of bees. If you do not bee afraide of them and let them know and treet them with love they will keep you in honey. put a top box on with a feeder jar in it in warm weather, in cold weather put candy mix in there for them.It is cloudy here and 71º now but the sun is trying to come out,is doing a prety good job of it. Have a great day and a better tomorow.

LLOYD, they aren't honey bees in the shed.  We think they are hornets of something similar.  I don't want to get too close because I don't know what my reaction to a sting would be.  There's someone coming this week to check them out!

Christy is about half way home right now and Frankie just now picked up Cooper for the night.  He'll be back again in the morning.  Cindy and her friend have arrived safely at Niagara Falls and are enjoying the trip but they are enjoying even more just being together with no one else around.  They've been friends since before they went to school because we lived only a couple houses away from one another.

I'm going to get some supper, turn on the TV and relax and I bet there's a nap coming on sometime this evening!  I hope you are all enjoying your day!

Nearly 1000 rockets were fired from Gaza to Israel this past week. Very sad casualty:  One rocket hit a tree with a flock of herons asleep, killing dozens. Three were found wounded but still  breathing and have been taken to rehabilitation.

I am relieved: the sirens are silent again.

I had the battery chargers on the batterys in the rv and son in law mowed the yard and did not pay enough attion and mowed it up in little peices. so about another $100 for a nother one. It is a speical four wire one for 220 for the RV. the weather guesser chainged hie/her mind while I was typeing. now says clea. and the sun is peeikeing out. Have a good day. how can I make the fonts show larger?

Bubble, I do recall being in a hotspot (so we thought) during WWII, 20 miles from a SAC Base & rings of the missile silos. We did have drills & warnings but not what you are facing every day. The world today seems to be drained of love, so sad.

I'm off to sleep, hope to, anyway. Hoped to see that Rick had been released but think his doctors are giving him a good going over.

Sweet dreamd and God Bless all.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  My day is off and running!  Cooper has arrived, the beets that I got at the Farmers Market are in the sink and the bee-guy is coming around noon!  It'll be a busy day!

The weather is a bit cooler today as it was yesterday!  I'm in favor of that!  I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

What a nice surprise to sit down for a minute and find Friend RICK posting!  You have been sorely missed, my friend an I, for one, have been praying for your recovery and your return every day!  Looks like my prayer was answered in a positive way!  Keep on keeping on!

I've been working on the red beets all day (well, I took time off for the exterminator) and there are 9 pint jars of them sitting on the counter cooling!  I always feel like I've accomplished something when I look at the finished project.

AMY, sounds like you and I were doing the same thing today!  Too bad we can't do it together!

Tomorrow, the rest of the beets are going to be made into red beet relish.  I've never made that before but it sounds good so I'm trying it!

Now I have to go in on the sofa and watch some TV through my eyelids.  I'm tired right down to the tips of my toes and it starts at the top of my head!  I don't think it misses a muscle or a bone on the way!

I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow.  And may God bless us, every one...especially RICK/RAMMEL!

Well, here I am...back here talking to myself.  Perry Mason didn't put me to sleep tonight so I got up off the sofa and put a load of towels in the washer.  It's almost finished and I'll throw them in the dryer and head for the haystack.  More beets to do tomorrow and no Cooper to get me going early!

Nighty night, all y'all!

I've been in a couple times but not long enough to post. So glad to see you back, Rick, and I think your son did a fantastic job keeping us updated!  Not sure my kids could do as well (or would).... he is a delight to visit with!

My family is gathering on Sat to take the group photos & all the photos of various groups. Daughter & I decided we'd take pics FIRST and feed 'em later. Not easy to get this many people in one spot when everyone is so busy. 27 total, counting me. I'll be sending Bubble a photo of the gang to post for me when we get sorted out. Need to make sure both batteries are charged & a clean SD card to start with, tripod ready (& a spare  ::) ) busy day ahead!

Jane, I've had laundry on the list for several days & still in the baskets. Do you & Amy use the same recipe for pickled beets?  My brother found "Aunt Nellie's" in the jar are nearest to what our mother canned... got me hooked. He ate them like candy.

Off to bed, hugs all around.  Sweet dreams & God Bless!  Thanks to all (whole list of folks) popping in to hold hands when we need it.

You snuck in, Rick, and a welcome sight FOR SURE!  Anxious to hear if your birds are looking for you. The brown thrush are already gone, haven't seen any for most of the week. Only 2 robins left & both are young (speckled chest). Saw the first 2 "snow birds" this week so maybe we really will have the early fall.  WOW have you seen the moon tonight?  SO big & bright!

Good morning...

No need for C/A last night ,nice that the heat is passing through and not stopping.  Need to go to the lumber store, Kyle is going to make me a stand for my wasging machine. Right now to get clothes off the bottom I need to stand on tippy toes and rib cage on machine to get them.

I have many jobs in line, will flip a coin and see which does or doesn't get done. Need to help the neighbour in her garden today or tomorrow...will see.

Jane, I put Kyles beets in quart jars last year...he really likes them. The friend that came to stay here like pickled beet sandwiches or even cucmber sandwiches. Jesse has a bad habit of snapping at bees and the other day he got a hornet bottom line hornet dead and I hope Jesse learnt a lesson there.

Bubble, can't imagine living and listening to all the rocket fire.Praying that they soon stop . Good to hear from Gloria, hope her grandson can get her back online.

Need to get ready for town..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  And a special GOOD MORNING to our "found" friends...GLORIA and RICK!  So nice to see you both!

I'm off to the kitchen to get started on the Red Beet Relish.  I'm looking forward to the last bit that won't fit in the jars so I can try it out.

Daughter Cindy and her lifelong friend will be returning from their trip to Niagara Falls later today and then tomorrow she will take off for WestChester, PA to pick up her daughter who will be going back to OK with her for a visit.  She needed that trip with her friend more than anyone can imagine!

Now I'm going in the kitchen, clean and label my jars from yesterday and then get started on today!  I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Amy, there is a cease fire, so no rockets  for the time being. Most of them were fired to the south of Israel and there the kids are really traumatized. I am lucky that on central seashore where I live we have been relatively safe.

I just hope the quiet and relative peace will endure.

Good Morning,

It's been a "hectic" week (meaning "more thinking than I'm used to doing"  :uglystupid2:).

Had the usual errands and hair appointment on Tuesday - plus a grocery delivery.   A/C went out Tuesday night and so did the attic fan.  Ceiling fans kept it comfortable until could call a/c company right as they opened on Wednesday morning.  Someone could come mid-morning and discovered the drain from attic was clogged. When that happens, the whole system (unit/fan) automatically turns off.  Good to know. Drain was unclogged - no parts needed - system working fine  .

3 of 5 cords on Roman blinds had broken a couple of weeks ago and replacements were ready to be installed; he came late Wednesday morning. They were so tight that he had to come back to adjust them - which he did yesterday.

Plus, the mosquito spray man showed up in between these two incidents AND #1 son came for lunch.

#2 son/dil came for dinner last evening.  I had given them both a choice on what to have (main reason for grocery order) - which meant I did more cooking than I'd done in ages.

Jane, good to see you're home and back to the canning.  Haven't had pickled beets in ages but remember I liked them.
Hope Cindy/friend had a good trip to Niagra Falls and wishing Safe Travels for her/daughter back to Oklahoma.  It's supposed to be cooler (a/k/a "not as hot") by the end of next week.

Welcome back, Rick Rammell!  Hope your recovery goes well.

So nice to see Gloria is able to let us know she's trying!

Shirley, I think your brown thrushes have made it this far.  Have seen several in the past week or so.  I saw one "attacking" a black snake working its way across the yard.  Snake didn't strike back and looked dead when thrush stopped pecking at it. However, it was gone the next day so maybe it was pretending.

Bubble, hope your area stays safe and hope the cease-fire works.

Hi, Amy and Lloyd - and anyone else I didn't directly comment to.

Housecleaner just came.  I help her by staying out of the way.

Such good news that Gloria is still with the world and that Rick is home and doing well.  It made a dreary, rainy morning seem much brighter.  And, so nice to see you today, Callie.  Some days are just too much, aren't they?  I always wish that "things" could portion themselves out over several days instead of happening all at the same time.  It is so exhausting!

Amy, my washing machine is really deep, too.  I can not touch the bottom of the spinning basket so, luckily, David has taken over most of the washing and I empty the dryer because I can reach that.  Also, we share the folding of the clean laundry at the kitchen table and counter.  So it works.  The manufacturers of almost everything don't think about the short people.  Everything is measured to an average person that is 'way taller than I am.

We are not pickled beets eaters.  We both prefer the cucumber pickles that I make and I have made a ton of them this summer because we eat them at nearly every evening meal and sometimes for lunch.  Once in a while I'll get a hankering for pickled beets but I cheat.  I buy a small can of canned beets and put them in the same brine that I make for cucumber pickles and let them refrigerate overnight and they are just as good (I think) as if I had made them from scratch.  I'm so lazy.

Sorry about your friend, Lloyd.  Losing someone you've known and cared for most of your life is so hard.

Take care, All.

Good Afternoon Everyone!!

So sorry to see that the weather is getting so
bad  in Europe and some places here in the
USA.

We here on the rocky coast of Maine are
having moderate temperatures for August.
We are very lucky ,  I understand,  because
around the USA and especially in Europe,  the
heat and summer storms are horrible.

I hope that everyone can stay safe.

Wishing the weather would moderate all over.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Ahh, I can now breathe a sigh of relief, as Gloria has been heard from and Rick is back home.  To me, it is so painful when folks whose posts I read are suddenly missing (unheard from), in hospital, etc.  I say their names in my prayers, and am blessed that prayers are answered.  I had a strange "household" problem last week: For years I've had an electric clock up on the wall, above the TV.  Many, many years ago, we had an electric outlet installed there for the clock.  YOu just don't realize how many times you look to that clock for the time, until it doesn't work anymore. I took it down, only to find that I couldn't pull the plug out of the outlet, it seems to have "fused". Also, looks like the connections may have shorted out.  Have a call in to an electrician and hope they can come and remove the plug, and totally disable the outlet. I have other electrical things I will have him work on!  Speaking of appliances not being made for short people; I need to get a stool made to stand on to get the clothes out of the washer.  Wish my dryer was raised up a bit so I don't have to practically get on my knees to remove clothes from there. Makes the back a bit painful!  Guess I have yakked enough for today.  Good wishes for better health for all who visit here.

Well, I'm all finished with the red beets!  The pickled beets are labeled and put away and half of the relish is labeled and put away.  I'm not going to get to try it because Cindy wants one last visit to the local drive in.  It's unique in that it's best meal is Fish and Chips and it's so good that people travel many miles to eat it.  This one has been open since I was in high school and it looks like it will be open forever.  The kids are on the way to pick me up!  Gotta go comb my hair!

My mind is going a dozen directions at once, trying to get cameras charged & set up for the family photo opt tomorrow. A bunch of us used to keep the camera discussion buzzing a few years ago, Jack was kinda the ring leader for the best of the latest models of Panasonic Lumix and it's been a couple years since I've sorted & charged so got quite a mess.

Lloyd, sincere sympathy for the loss of an old friend. I don't have many left from the early years but we do have a luncheon every year the first week of October, for anyone from "The Class of '53" that can make it. Much as we tell ourselves that "they are in a better place".... we miss them. Death is forever and such an empty feeling for those of us left behind.

Gloria, you'll never know how bad I wanted to check with your daughter but she seemed so frazzled I didn't want to add to her stress.

I'm still planning to make some fruit ice for the gathering tomorrow. Got a bag of oranges and 2 bunches of bananas..... so much easier with the electric juicer but still a lot of work to make enough so everyone get at least a few spoonfulls. Have to stir it every few hours so the fruit doesn't sink to the bottom. I tried the canned orange juice one time & not at all the same. I add plenty of sugar & never found anyone that didn't love it.

Callie, my brown thrushes & even the robins LOVE any kind of grapes. I cut them in half so they can pick them up easier. Kinda lonesome around here right now.

Anyone that does not can might try the "Aunt Nellies" pickled beets.... slices or the jars of the little ones. They really are good & taste pretty much like Mother used to make.

Better get busy, won't get to bed till well after midnight.  Sweet dreams & God Bless.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  Cindy is on her way to West Chester, PA to pick up her daughter, Courtney.  Then they will be off to Oklahoma!  If you have a minute, please say a prayer that they arrive safely.  They will be staying overnight a little more than half-way there and completing the journey tomorrow.  They have about 20 hours on the road.

LLOYD, I'm sorry you lost a friend but as everyone agrees, he's in a better place and not suffering any more!

Today, I MIGHT make some of "Jim's Egg Thingys".  I never say I'll do anything for sure any more.  If I decide not to, I don't!  Next week I'm getting some corn to freeze.  I much prefer frozen corn over canned corn!  I'll pick that up at Davy's. I noticed he seems to have the best on the local market!

I guess I better get dressed and get my day started!  I wish you all a good one...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning...

Starting out at 47°,nice sunny day. Have laundry in the  washer that will soon be on the line.  Good news is the neighbour came home from the hospital but has a long road ahead of him with tests etc.

Will check out the cucumbers at the store and IF they are good will buy and put into Mrs. B's pickles. Today I drain the icicle pickles and brine again...........not sure I like this job for the nest 6 days but move into doing the syrup after the brine. Will see.

Jane, yes prayers for safe travels, I do know how one can worry when kids are on the road. )

Lloyd, I am sorry to read of your friend, we have had a rush on that here with  3 passing but know they are all on a better place.

Day is moving faster than I am better get a hitch in my get a long.

Before I forget to tell you shorties.... I've been using this kind of step stool for years, even got an extra for the motorhome. Best part is the handle that collapses it & makes easy to carry is built in flat so the whole thing can slide into narrow spaces between cabinets. I sit on it, stand on it to get little things out of the washing machine.... I even have a piece of the no-skid stuff cut to size so it's not slippery. I was surprised how many styles are available but this is nearest to what I have. https://www.amazon.com/Folding-Step-Stool-Lightweight-Bathroom/dp/B014WOXB6O/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2VJTEEXQE9SQ1&keywords=folding%2Bstep%2Bstool&qid=1660391852&sprefix=folding%2B%2Caps%2C186&sr=8-5&th=1 (https://www.amazon.com/Folding-Step-Stool-Lightweight-Bathroom/dp/B014WOXB6O/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2VJTEEXQE9SQ1&keywords=folding%2Bstep%2Bstool&qid=1660391852&sprefix=folding%2B%2Caps%2C186&sr=8-5&th=1)

I'm getting one of those stools but don't tell my daughter!  She thinks I should stay flat on the floor at all times....even when all the smoke alarms are going off!  Even when I need something off the top shelf in the kitchen or laundry room or bathroom or....wherever!  I'm allowed to live alone but I'm not supposed to DO anything.  The other 3 kids just say "Be Careful, Mommy!"  She used to work at the local office of the Area Agency on Aging and I guess she saw a lot of injuries.  I understand that and I live with it!

I'm just waiting for a quick trip to the recycle place.  OOPS, my daughter just texted she's on the way!  Keep on keeping on!

Phyllis, my ribs were getting sore bending over and reaching down, I knew if I told the "wood whisperer" he would make me one. I needed a new sewing desk, mentioned what it needed to have and not need and he made the perfect one for me!!

Good morning from a sunny Interior! The last few days have been warmer with evening thundershowers. However, yesterday we had 81 degrees and no rain. This warmer weather comes after a week dipping into the low thirties and frost. Unfortunately, we're going to be dripping again on Sunday.

We've had record climate events last winter and this summer. This summer alone, we had as a state three million acres burnt, sinkholes, flooding, and 67,000 lightning strikes in July alone that caused seven new blazes. And a frost in early August.

A recent phenomenon is that shore's sea ice is disappearing due to climate change, and polar bears have more miscarriages. One of the results is that polar bears are remaining ashore and mating with grizzlies; we're seeing a tenfold increase in hybrids. Two of the most giant and most dangerous bears are getting together and creating an entirely new species.

I've been busy with mid-year and summer-end paperwork, had my houseguest return to her home, and did a massive clean, declutter, and toss for the yearly apartment inspection ahead of next month's visit by the head honchos from the state capital.

I am sorry that so many are dealing with ill health and the loss of old friends. I wish I could wave a wand and make it all like it used to be sometimes. I've gone through, past, and around so many changes in the past twenty years that I often feel obsolete. And past my due date.

Shirley, I have two of those stools purchased from Home Depot. I keep one in the kitchen and one in the living room. Last week I purchased another rolling unit like the brown one in my kitchen. This one in white for my bathroom holds many items I had on the floor, under the sink, and on my small counters. I'm even thinking of purchasing yet another for my bedroom.

Amazon has a HUGE assortment of Stools. Be sure the step area is big enough - you don't want to slip off the edge as you are standing on it. If it will not be moved much the ones with a tall handle are good for steadying.
I still have a stool I made for the kids about 55 years ago to reach the sink and toilet. Made of oak and will not tip over no matter where one stands on it - very stable. It still gets used around here for a small "step up"

You bring up some good points, Rick. I like the low ones as my balance is iffy on a good day.

I once had an aluminum step ladder with handles for years. Once in the kitchen, I stood on the top step and raised my arms to place a dish in the cupboard. Long story short, an alumian leg broke, and I fell, breaking two bones in my foot.

I never once thought about using those steps I had gotten used from my parents as they worked fine for years.

Well, here I am!  It's been "kind of" busy day!  Got the recycling done and I have a whole quarter of a room to use again.  There was stuff all over!  I also tried out the beet relish and BOY is it ever good!  I made more than I thought I was going to and now I'm glad I did!

Frankie dropped off Cooper while she did some errands and we had two walks while she was gone.  Then when she got back we had a nice visit!  I thought she was going to stay for supper but she didn't!  Maybe she will tomorrow!  I have to be up and ready to head or church by 9:45 tomorrow so I better be off to the haystack!  I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow.  And may God bless us, every one!

Shirley I alsoeat a lot of Aunt Nellies" pickled beets slices. a health note they also help to lower and keep the blod sugar in check, regardles what the doctors do or donot say. I have all of the blod sugar testing equipement, and check first thing in the morning. I fiend eating the, Aunt Nellies" pickled beets dose help keep the blod sugsr level lower. If you are not to whempey about sticking your finger. but one thing I do not have enough wilpower to let alone ,and it messes with it a lot is icecream fudge bars. I get scolded a lot for that, and hard headed as i am I tell them I have lived a long and reasonable good health, filled with lot of acedents, and god can get me any time he wants, but he dosent seam to want me up there with him so far. I even died once on the operating table, while the were operating on my back rather doing testing the spine cord with die to see about the repture in it, ( have no crrtlage betwen L4 and L5) it hurts all the time but I have learned to egnore it for the most Part. no cartlage there and also have A titame srrew to the top coner to the left and up in my scule to keep the brains from running out. I was jerked out of the road grader when the weind cought the door, i tried to hang on but could not and I hit on myback on the rear tire of the road goader, that is what happened to my back, and in the year of 1914 I had three head injoyrs. the second one was the worest, that is when they put the screw in and the first one I was working on the cutting edge of the buldozer where some bolts had pulled throug  and dirt had built up. I had the dozer blade raisd up setting down , taking the bolts out , to fix it and the last bolt pulled through it and it slpped me harde nough to knock me over fla on the ground.  broke my left jaw and they wired it back to gather with staniles wire, whitch I still have still have it in there. Nancy says I am a accedent looking for a place to happen see youall tomorow. good night and sweet dreams.

Good morning

A beautiful morning here with a temp of 49° at the moment. Thankfully a day of rest here. Yesterday was laundry and after that I did mustard pickles and now have 22 jars waiting to be labeled and put away.

Some of the leaves are starting to turn colour already, more signs of Fall on the way.

Jane, did you get Jim's recope downpat  ready to share?

Rick, Kyle made two stools for the grandson, one stayed here and the other they took home. He made the base wider so no tippine plus put a handslot to be able to pick it up .You brought back memories..Kyle made the stool and I kept a box of cheeries on hand to help with the aim.. :2funny:

Patricia, I also have on hand a gizmo to reach things in the cupboard.....long with a gripper on the end to pick up light weight items.

Sitting here listening to the rooster crow and loons flying over head..peaceful.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning,

Lloyd, sorry to learn about the cow.  I stopped going to church "in person" when restrictions went into place; now I'm rather spoiled to watching service online.

Amy, your "icicle pickles" sound like what we call "Christmas pickles".  Are they red or green in color and look/taste a bit like watermelon rind pickles but made with cucumbers? I used to make them every year - then turned recipe and canning kettle over to dil.

Re: stepstools...    I have a very sturdy one with a non-slip surface and non-slip covers on legs.  Finally dawned on me that I wouldn't be able to reach the phone on the counter if I fell off - so I put phone on the floor nearby before I step on the stool. Haven't needed it....yet.

Time for church on-line.    Enjoy your day, Everyfriend.

Good morning; it's cooler here today after having 80 and 81 on Friday and Saturday. Right now, it's sixty with an expected high of only 71. We had a frost last week, one we'd expect in early October, but what one could expect has now been turned on its ear.

Amy, I also have a gripper, but since I bought the stools, I tend to use them more. I purchased mine when Larry had talked about having grippers. That is someone I miss seeing here daily and hearing about his life.

Lloyd, I'm so sorry to hear about your health and the loss of your cow. I believe Nancy is right.

Jane, you and Amy are amazing in what you accomplish daily. I used to have that energy, but it snuck away from me, and I never found where it went. I don't even meal prep anymore or bake and preserve as I used to.

My slow cooker, large pots, microwave, and grill all found new homes.

Anyone thinking to buy one of these, should first read the Customer Reviews.
Mostly terrible.  I wouldn't order one for sure.

I make it a point always to check the reviews of anything I'm interested in purchasing. You can always tell the ones promoted by the company and those by actual people giving an honest opinion. I checked the ones I purchased in Home Depot online on my cell before purchasing.

It just makes sense.

I made "Jim's Egg Thingys" today and they're great!  I have the recipe sitting right here beside me to post but my eyes are telling me they're tired and they want to close.  I'll be sure to post it tomorrow morning when my eyes are still fresh and wide awake!

I went to church today and when I mentioned to the sub priest that we had today that I had spent most of my summer in OKLA with my daughter and her family, he wanted to know where because he grew up  in Tulsa.  I was in a "sort of" Tulsa suburb.  He knew exactly where I was!  Interesting!

LLOYD.. so sorry to hear about your poor cow.  What a shame!  I've never heard of that happening and I live in the country.

I think I better get off here and head for the haystack.  I'm really tired tonight!  I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow and may God bless us, every one!

Too tired to talk and had a couple thoughts put down that vanished so will just wish all SWEET DREAMS and GOD BLESS.

I hope to copy your egg recipe, Jane... and I'm so happy to hear about the trees changing colors already, Amy.... and the off & on cool days in your area, Patricia. We hope for a break in our weather by Wednesday but sure am tired of this year and last.

Lloyd, sorry about the cow, we paid someone to buy a calf for us to pasture & grain feed & have butchered when big enough... only the calf got out & hit by a car on the highway near Warrensburg.... was a chunk of money gone without one ounce of beef to eat. Not a good deal and never tried that again!

The eyes are blinking slower, staying shut longer so better get these old bones off to bed. I got up at 3:00am & only a short nap this afternoon.
