Mother's Day

Mama, tell me how it looks up above
I've been thinking about ya, it's been tearing me up
Mama, I don't know who else I can trust
I've been running on empty, and getting stuck in the mud

I'm missing you
I just wanted to say
I'm searching for you
Tryna get through each day
So I hope you can hear me
I hope you're doing OK
I'm missing you
I'm tired of feeling this way

Trying to remember how it used to be
Life feels so strange when you're not here with me
All of the good things, and bad things I wish you'd seen more of
Maybe you're out there somewhere holding me up

I'm missing you
I just wanted to say
I'm searching for you
Tryna get through each day
So I hope you can hear me
I hope you're doing OK
I'm missing you

Mama, tell me how it looks up above
I've been thinking about ya
And who you helped me become
Oh mama, I can't stress this enough
Even though right now I'm broken
I still know that I'm loved

But I'm missing you
I just wanted to say
If you only knew
I finally found my own way
And I know you can hear me
But at the end of each day
I'm missing you
I'm missing you
I'm missing you

Good morning..

Went to be listening to rain and woke to rain..thankfully it is rain and not snow or we would be buried in snow!

Work around home or Callie would say Domestic Duties calling....just wish they didn't know my name.

Jane safe travels today, hope the weather is nice for you.

Astro and mycheal, please don't share the snow! That is a lot of snow to deal with. Our snow is finally gone here and it is nice to see the trees budding out.

Bubble, thank you for the new start, love the words of wisdom.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

More snow!  Parts of the state will get over an additional foot.  Fortunately, we are slated for less than three inches.  :)

Lloyd, I agree with what the snow does...we called it cheap fertilizer.

Astro, is this normal for this time of year there? We have had 8 inches of snow on Mothers Day here a few years back.

Mentioned to Kyle this morning...we are like the 3 bears when it comes to weather.....too hot.....too cold and too damp!! Right now the dampness is winning.

Great graphic and quotes for May, Bubble.  Thanks for using one of my graphics. You do good work for us.

Yesterday was miserable with lots of rain all day.  Today is beautiful.  The bright sun and blue sky lifts my spirits.

Take care, All.

Bubble, have a new e-mail for Friends but not sure how to get into it myself, another g-mail account & it wants me to think hard about how to open from my personal (doctor-type) mail.  Ah, such a pain to have to think! Today better than all past week so attitude still intact! Hugs to all, God Bless, Love ya.  Tisie/Shirley

Good morning...

Wonder what the sun looks like??? Over cast with a temp of 36° and and promise of more rain.

Not a lot on the agenda other than finish the borders and make a binding for the quilt......then move on to more sewing.

Astro, thank you. I tend to enjoy Spring and Fall the most. Winter does have some good qualities in that a fresh snow fall is so pretty.(My husband isn't so sure on that) but it is!

Shirley, one day at a time will get you through this.

Better get ready to meet the day.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I'm in Jenks, Okla (a suburb of Tulsa) and pretty much settled in.  Ali came over yesterday and I held baby Cam for at least 20 minutes.  He almost laughed out loud a couple times, smiled a lot and looked straight at me most of the time I was holding him.  The only reason I'm not still holding him is that Cathy came over and took him from me and then his mommy took him home!  I did get another chance because Emma wasn't with them and we went over there when she was home from school!  It was so good to see them all and there were LOTS of hugs!

This afternoon, we're going shopping to look at dresses that Cathy might wear to her son (my grandson) Kyle's wedding in February.  I'm happy to be part of that, too!

I'll be off to the showers in a few minutes!  I read all your postings and got caught up!  SHIRLEY, I'm glad you're feeleng a bit better!

And I'm glad all the snow and rain is north of us.  We drove through one full day of heavy rain storms with not much letup on the way here!  It was nice to see the sun come out!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning everyone past and present!

Amy, we're twinning it weatherwise, although we're slated to be in the mid-fifties for a high the rest of this week. The snow is almost gone, as is the ice, but it's gloomy out there and still looks like early March rather than May.

Jane, I'm glad you're enjoying your family time! I had a maternal aunt, Rachel Hoover, and have several cousins and extended family in and around Oklahoma City.

Shirley, it was nice to hear from you, and I'm sending good vibes your way!

The meet and greets society is planning a shopping and luncheon day tomorrow to shake the doldrums out, and It'll be nice to see some folks and visit some garden shops.

Good morning..

Charlie (horse) decided to wake me this morning at 5.00 am, not impressed with his timing. :tickedoff:  If I get them during the night I take Shirleys remedy of a few swigs of Gatorade and it works!

Off to the city, get in and get out before the town gets busy. Stocking up on items  for the summer.

Bubble, loved your Irish blessing..

Patricia, we have rain again today...never ending it seems.

Thank you, Bubble for posting my picture!  He's a little doll baby and smiles all the time.  When I can, I'll get a picture of Emma and Mikey and get them posted too.  Emma is getting so tall and Mikey is all over the place!  I'm going to LOVE this visit!

Amy, have a safe trip and send Charlie packing!  He doesn't need to hang around!

I'm not sure what's on the schedule for today but I'm going to be off for my morning walk as soon as I get something to eat!  I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning, everyone!

Amy, we have a low presently of thirty degrees, cloudy, and expecting light snow!?! I understand that the entire world is having off-season weather this year.

I'm sorry you're having Charley horses, and hope that Gatorade works for you. I could never use it, like Alka-Seltzer and other salty medical drinks. It tends to come right back up again.

Our meet and greets society is getting together for a lunch out and a day of shopping. It'll be nice to get out among friends again today physically!

Work around home today and sew. Yesterday was another fun day.In and out of Costco in 1/2 hour. Highlights of the day was seeing all the Magnolia trees in blossom and on the drive home an eagle  on a log in the water having a fish dinner.

Jenny, every job needs a "boss" so while your back is out of commission  wear the white hat for a while.

Patricia, enjoy your time out with your friends. I bet there are lots of things to catch up on with each other.

Good morning, yesterday's light snow never materialized, but it never got past the forties.  However, it was a fantastic day as we all had a great time at McCafferty's for lunch and a day at the shops. Nine of us were out for lunch, and seven of us remained to roam the shops.

We are in touch every morning at our meets and greets, but it has been months since we saw each other in person for some of us. Alan and Dora were greatly missed and the topic of many remembrances and concern. I was gone most of yesterday and spent far too much, but it was worth it.

Farrah wasn't happy with me yesterday because she expected her usual shopping treats as soon as she saw the bags. I hadn't purchased any new as she still had a full jar, so I gave her a few while putting everything away.

She left those alone while carefully keeping an eye on me, putting things away, following me from cupboard to closet and back again. She was unhappy when I settled down with my Kindle; the treats were left, and I was ignored until later that night.

Hello to Everyfriend!  Although I think "every" is overused!  There sure hasn't been a crowd in here today!

I had a great day today.  First we kept baby Cam while his mama did some shopping and flower work, then we went shopping.  Cathy found an outfit to wear to her son's (my grandson's) wedding in February.  And I bought a new pair of "church pants"!  And while we were shopping, Ali called to see if we could pick up Mikey from nursery school.  We did and when we got home, Ali, Emma and Cam were there.  Ali's husband joined us later and we all had supper together.  Now we're all relaxing and doing our own thing after they went home!  Whew!!!  Our "great" day was also a busy one!

Now I'm ready for the haystack!  And I'll be going there early tonight.  As soon as my phone is charged I'm out of here!

I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow and may God bless us, every one!

Almost everything I found online was full of glowing advertisements that immediately made me wary. Plus, the FDA sent them a letter to stop promoting false claims, which didn't make me feel confident in their adverts.

FDA Warns Seller of Omega XL
On June 31, 2021 the FDA issued a warning letter to Great Healthworks, Inc. following a review of the company's website, which found statements made about Omega XL and ProbioticXL supplements to be drug claims.

They also said the product had very little Omega in a later warning.

Good morning...

I can see blue sky......in places!! Maybe it will be a day that the clouds won't cry??

Lots to do around home as yesterday was busy dealing with phone calls and a contractor. Better get those dust kangaroos dealt with before they become dust elephants!

Rick, I take curmin/turmeric as with anything new in your system talk it over with your Dr as it may interact with meds you may be taking. One lady I know with RA takes it and rarely now takes her RA med as this does the trick for her. I get mine at Costco...read up on it and see what you think. It does have to contain 95% curcuminoids in it to work.

Better get at the day, it sliups by too fast on me.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

I haven't been here regularly because I am preoccupied with raccoons in my attic.  Not squirrels, as I thought before.  I've hired a professional wildlife removal comp. and they are into a lengthy solution to the problem at a high price, which is what I should have done a long time ago.  Believe me, moth balls do NOT work!  Apparently, duct work is damaged, siding and soffit is damaged, etc., and all these things need to be fixed.....and paid for.  I've already contracted for $1400 and much more to come.  I would like to get rid of this house but I'm too old to move and price of houses in my town/county are outrageous and I do not want to take on another house and all it's problems and costs again....even if I could afford it.

Excuse me for the rant but, I am upset.  Didn't need this added to the other things I'm dealing with.  Oh, well.....that's life, isn't it?  >:(

Hope everyone here is doing well.  Take care.

Phyllis, I agree with you at staying where you are...if you are like me you have way too much "stuff" to move..I am leaving it for the next guy   Must admit I have been getting rid of some but there is a lot that I use yet. I will trade you on the bills...we just got our quote for JUST the garage roof, the eyebrow and another little part.  :yikes:

In our younger days we would do the work but unable to do it now. The contractors forget that Kyle  used to do quotes/work also and knows time and material for the job.

We are being wrapped in sun!!!

Phyllis - If you want to "rant" here, you go right ahead. We all have occasional problems and it's good to just dump them sometimes. Raccoons can, as you know, be a big problem. IMHO - the Pros are the best way to go. More likely than us to know who, where, why, what, and how.
Title: Re: Soda Shoppe for May 1 , 2023
Post by: phyllis on May 05, 2023, 10:56:09 AM
Amy, I have said to David many times that life is backward.  The problems of an aging house are given to an aging owner who has lost the strength and agility to deal with them personally so has to hire someone to do the things that we can no longer do.  And that hired person will charge ever higher prices....even if you can find someone who will show up and do what you need and do it properly.  Sometimes I just want to ignore it all....but, that brings even harder and more expensive problems.

Thanks for the encouragement, Rammel.  I should have gone with the professional early on but knew it would cost a whole lot more and sometimes, I find it really hard to deal with these professionals when they don't always do what they promise but still want their outrageous fees.

The removal gal showed me pictures of the raccoon babies....why do they have to be so cute?!!!!!!!  Darned critters!!!
Title: Re: Soda Shoppe for May 1 , 2023
Post by: patricia19 on May 05, 2023, 12:55:50 PM
Phyllis, we're dealing with that here; in the past, five couples lived on more than three acres outside of town, glorying in the peace, wildlife, and gardens and their hard work. Some of these lands were held for decades.

Now all but one live in town because of age, infirmity, or the costs of maintaining roads, lands, and transportation while aging. I went through that in 2013, and while I miss my health, I don't miss working and trying to do everything. I simply no longer had that energy,

An Explore YouTube channel has raccoons, easy to watch when it's not your home, but even that Mother raccoon kicked a squirrel out of its home twenty feet above the ground to raise her babies there.

Amy, we're also having sunny skies and temperatures in the fifties. We're still about a month or two behind, what we've had in the past, but it seems that's true across the globe.

Beautiful sunny out there. :) Will be able to hang the laundry out today after two weeks of not being able to. Kyle cut the grass yesterday, first cutting of the year . I love the smell of fresh cut grass.

Need to drop off a contract for the roof job this morning then home to work. Finished off the quilt all but the binding yesterday now to plan on another one.

Jane , have fun hugging the great grands and grands!

Phyllis, all baby animlas are cute, well most of them. Baby birds are all belly and bald so not so cute till they are feathered.

Patricia, wild fires out west are causing problems in many areas. Flood in other ares in the east. From one disaster to another it seems.

Shirely and Lloyd are missing.

My Daughter has two doggies and one of them is at least mostly an Irish Setter.  He's super friendly and my daughter saved him from a slow and painful death because the people who had him before didn't want to keep him and they weren't taking very good care of him.  He is super friendly!

Today will be a slow day!  Ali and Dan will stay home together and look after the boys.  They both have colds!  So we won't get to see them today!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

I enjoyed watching the festivities from Britain.  How exciting to watch history being made🥰

We had a busy day.  A cousin is moving and we attended the going away party. Then we rushed to get to Granddaughter Kate's dancing competition.......missing it by just a minute😢  We did get to watch two more of her dances plus 20 or so more.  At this time in their season they are all polished and dance just beautifully.  Next weekend is her recital and I always look forward to seeing that‼️❣️‼️

It is a bit cooler here today but we have beautiful blue skies🦋

We taped the Kentucky Derby and have been watching it today‼️ Bob is watching sailing from San Francisco Bay.....we both love sailing.

We have a big basketball game to watch tonight.  Our Denver Nuggets vs the Phoenix Suns. After our Avalanche lost we were sad but glad we had another
local team to cheer on🥰‼️🥰

I hope you all enjoyed a good Sunday🙏

We went to see Tucker and Kyle gave him a raise double dish feeding station and owner has a new stool to be able to reach higher places.

Off to the Dr today, drive is an hour, then wait to see him  and home. Appointment is in the middle of the day, can't start anything too heavy but can putter about till time to go.

Rick, did you have your eye surgery?

Still no Lloyd. :(

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good morning.  Just checking in.  It was a quiet weekend here. I watched the coronation because of its historical interest but the Coronation Concert on PBS on Sunday was a lot more fun.  It is said so often that Britain really knows how to put on a show and I agree.

Take care.

Rick, I knew you'd see a difference immediately!  I stood on the front porch and was amazed at the difference just in the colors.  And what a change in what I could see!

PHYLLIS, so nice to see you here!  I always miss you when you're gone!

I wonder where LLOYD is!  I hope he's OK!

We're supposed to get thunderstorms around here this morning and then sunshine in the afternoon!  Have a great day!

Don't mind waking up to beautiful days like this! Busy day ahead, need to wash the /clean the vehicle and bake bread.

Yesterday went well Dr does not want to see me for a year, works for me.

Jane, anymore photos of the grands/great grands?

Rick, my neighbour is so happy that she does not need to put on glasses just as soon as she wakes up. Does need them for reading though. I think they are printing smaller now on everything. Extra big packaging and smaller print???

Patricia, Callie has finally got over her fit and it is out and about. She let them know that being left on her own was not a good thing!

Better shake a leg and get going..

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I'm up and attem and Cindy is at the computer doing her work from home even though she's not feeling so good.  She has what is acting like a cold and now Jim is also down with what appears to be a cold.  Both of the little boys are also suffering from colds and passing them around.  So far, Emma, her mother and father and me are the only ones not fighting a cold.  I'm staying as far away from them as I can!

Yesterday, we took Emma to her tumbling class at the Gym! They were all 5 and 6 year old kids.  Some of them did great and some of them will never be gymnasts.  Emma is tall and thin for her age and she looks like she'll be good at it.

We also did some shopping for groceries.  Since Cindy works at home and Jim is retired, he's the cook and I'm the cleanup person.  It works out pretty well.  Jim grew up with a farm in the family so he's a pretty good cook, too.

LLOYD, it sounds great to me to have honey handy!  I usually buy mine at the Farmer's Market at home because it's the freshest!

I guess I better get dressed and start think about keeping house since Jim is stlll trying to sleep off the cold!  I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Some good news from my Friends in S&F this morning!  Happy that your doctor gave you a positive, Amy.  The less we see our doctors the better life is.

The vivid colors amazed me, too, Rammel.  I have astigmatism so I had to continue to wear glasses after cataracts were removed but since I have worn glasses from the age of 9 I am used to them and feel "naked" if I don't have them on.  I am happy for you that your surgery has gone well.

Thank you, Jackie, for reposting our "wandering" Lloyd's post.  I hope he can eventually find Soda Shoppe again.

I still have raccoons.  They don't want to leave their comfy spot in my attic.  I will call the removal company again today and tell them we need to try something else.

Nice to hear from you, Jane.  Except for colds sounds like you are enjoying your time in Texas.

Take care, All.

These thyme plants are a bit too big and rough to run your feet over them, but I do often run a hand into them and enjoy the lingering smell. Smells much like oregano.
I have some Lilly Of The Valley on the South West side of the house. Just today I saw that they all were in bloom. They were my wife's favorites, and I used to pick off a few flower stems and bring them in the house. Very fragrant.

Mine is about10 to 12 inches high and has developed a woody stem. Parts die off and have to be pruned out. But annually it is spreading. It seems to be quite hardy. I looked for a picture but didn't find a good one.

No flowers or greenery here; we're about six to eight weeks behind weatherwise, but we're starting to warm up, into the fifties, sixties, and perhaps seventies and with an above-average snowpack this year in the mountains rapidly melting, they'll talking floods in the eastern Interior which means folks will come downstream to here.

Amy, no smoke here; our weather tends to flow toward Canada and not from it.

Special Weather Statement issued May 10 at 4:16AM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks

...High Water Levels Possible This Weekend and Next Week...

A warming trend to near or just above normal temperatures is expected across Interior and Northern Alaska later this week into the weekend. These warming temperatures, combined with a much above normal snowpack over higher elevations of the Interior, will cause a significant increase in snowmelt. Runoff into rivers south of the Brooks Range later this weekend and next week will cause water levels to rise and breakup to begin on many rivers.

The increased runoff may also cause smaller streams and creeks to rise to bankfull levels or overbank in low lying areas.

As of 600 PM Tuesday evening, water was reported over a portion of the Steese Highway near Milepost 145, just west of Birch Creek near Circle. Ice moving down Birch Creek caused water to rise into an old channel and go overbank along the Highway. The water levels will gradually fall as the ice continues to move down Birch Creek away from the area.

People along Interior rivers and streams should prepare for the possibility of high water levels this week and next week due to ice breakup and snowmelt runoff.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  This has been a busy place!  I've read everything but I probably won't comment.  Jim is still not feeling well and my computer is set up at the end of the room where he's mopping u after his cold!  So I don't have light on to disturb him!

I bought a new pillow and I put it on my bed last night.  I spent about 2 and one third minutes with my head on it and I took it off the bed.  It will be returned today or whenever Cindy decides to go there.  I guess growing up on feather pillows has spoiled me.  I just plain don't like what they use now!

I'm going in the kitchen now and whip up some ham salad to have around for sandwiches.  Wanna join me for lunch?  I'll put some in the SS fridge with AMY's bread!

Good morning.

Just looked at the weather information and our temp is going to kiss 80°!!
We have a trug to deliver this morning. Neighbour is taking it for us and we will follow along and help with off loading and seting up. A bit of outside work to do here then it will be inside work where it is cooler...I hope. Central air may get a work out today.Past two mornings we have woke to frost on the ground  , we are now if freeze or fry weather.

Yesterday coming back from scouting out the place we are to take the trug we were lucky enough to see a loon splashing across the lake. I have watched them on their own or with their babies but never splashing like this.

Jane, I too like my feather pillows..

Patricia, it seems floods or fires are about now.

Rick, thank you, we also get the beverage ready at night and first one up just flicks the toggle switch.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

good Morning Everyfriend! Or maybe I should say Good Afternoon!  It's been a rather busy day here and I think the morning just slithered away never to return!

Ali called to ask if we could come over there and look after the kids while she took her doggie to the emergency vet.  She was having trouble getting on her feet and favoring her left ear.  Turns out she had a very bad ear infection.  Got meds and is on the mend already.

Being there for the kids included getting Emma ready for kindergarten and getting her there.  I was the baby watcher while Cindy did that.  Then she took the baby with her while she drove Emma to school.  Mikey got up while they were gone and I took care of him until Cindy got back.  Then I got Baby Cam while Cindy got Mikey ready for nursery school.  When it was time for him to go, we loaded all of us in the car, dropped off Mikey and came back to Cindy's.  I watched Cam while Cindy got on the computer to do her "work from home" job!  Jim is still sick and in bed.  The morning was just about over when Ali came by for Cam and had her lunch here.  WHEW!!!  That was our morning!

I sure home the afternoon is "BLAH"!  I could take some quiet time!

I'm not really complaining!  I loved it that I was here to help and able to do my share!  I love these kids and their parents and their grandparents!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning

Another lovely day in the making. We were goingto pick up peat moss and soil but have company coming. Last year they bought a trug from us and she gave us some wild leeks, some we ate and I planted a few to see if they would grow...and they did! She phoned to say they had dug up a big chunk and would we like some. YES!! Some will go in the ground to extend the small patch we have and the rest we will eat. Wild leeks have a flavour crossed between onion and garlic. You can dry, freeze or pickle them. Wild leeks are what the young boys would eat on their way to their one room school and the teacher would send them home because of the smell!

Gardening supplies can wait and the floors will get washed instead. Will go early in the morning before the town gets crazy.

Enjoy your day and stay safe..

Our friends just left, she wanted to show me the bags that her friend makes. One with dragon flies and three with different dogs her grandkids have, then one with a Border Collie on and Babes name on it. Needless to say tears flowed as this was such a surprise. Her friend and her husband work together on this, he has an embroidery machine to make the dogs/animals etc and she sews a quilted bag with a pocket on the inside as well as outside..one of a kind!!

Shirley, you then would enjoy the leeks. They are potent but delicious and best if everyone ate some :))

Patricia, I do believe you would enjoy them as you like spicy foods. These are only available in Spring here and well worth the winter wait to get them.

Leeks are bigger and not as strong...IMO..as scallions or green onions.  Leek and Potato Soup is one of our favorites but I haven't made it in a long time.  Wild ramps are good and a popular delicacy in the South but aren't always easy to find out in the woods theses days.  In fact, around here you can't find woods either.  Nothing but newer, bigger houses and even bigger businesses and office buildings.....and traffic, traffic, traffic!

Good to see you posting and sounding like your self, Shirley.  Are you feeling better these days?

Still haven't gotten the raccoon out of the attic.  The technician thinks that the mother and 2 babies were driven out by an adult male who has taken over the area.  They didn't want to trap the Mother and leave the babies to starve but if it is a male they will trap it.  They are careful to protect the raccoon but who is going to protect my house from the raccoon?   Something seems wrong here if raccoons are more important than people.  I want them treated humanely, too, but I want them out of my house!  They are doing a lot of expensive damage and making a health hazard in my home.  Hope this on-going problem is solved soon.

Take care, All.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  We were up and attem early here.  Today is Ali's flower day at the Farmers Market.  Jim usually helps her with transport and set up but he's still "under the weather".  So Cindy and I got up early, left here around 6:30, drove Jim's truck with a lot of her set up things in it and helped her set up.  Then we did a little shopping and came home to get some stuff done here.  We'll go back around noon and help her close up!

I'm so proud of the granddaughter!  She does most of this work on her own in addition to raising 3 kids.  Her husband is a BIG help with the kids and having Cindy and Jim nearby is nice but she's a really HARD worker!

I better get myself organized so I'm ready to leave when Cindy is!  Don't want to be late!  I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning from the warmer Interior at plus 45 and sunny, today's low. Yesterday we reached plus 68, so summer weather is still running about two months behind the old normal.

Long-range weather profiles show several rainy days and not many temperatures higher than seventy-five degrees.

Black flies...I remember them from Eastern Kentucky and am glad they're not locally grown. Our mosquitos and noseeums are bad enough!

Amy, I missed commenting on your neighbor's thoughtful gift. It shows what a great person you are to have that type of friend!

Jane on roller skates, yes, I can see that. I know that Glen would have been able to draw a picture of that for her and us. I miss seeing what he would come up with!

Patricia, no seeums ,do they bite? How different are they from chiggers? Blackflies are really bad today, then thankfully a wind came along to push them on and take a sheet off the line!

Thank you for your kind words, when Mar and I go out we sure have a lot of fun and laughs. The bag comes from south east of you , they live in Alberta!

Hmmm...have they thought about selling their bags on Etsy? Of course, that would entail a commitment they may neither want nor be ready for.

No-see-ums are tiny black gnats, hence their name, and yes, they have a vicious bite. Some people occasionally have allergic reactions, and the part around the bite will swell. They are attracted to the smoke around campfires, unlike mosquitos.

""No see ums" is the nickname many use for the tiny flies of the Ceratopogonidae family. These pests can leave you with itchy bites, and due to their small size (0.04 to 0.12 inches, or 1-3mm), they usually get away without you even seeing them."

Patricia, this started out as a gift for my friend she recieved a bag with an owl on it..because she is a wise ol owl :) Plus she shoots from the hip and doest give a hoot!! :)) My friend in turn ordered some for grands and  with their pets on the bag! One for her daughter with a beautiful dragonfly embroidery!. I think they are content with what they have coming in.

Your noseeums sound an awful like our blackflies, if bit near my eyes they swell shut . The bit area is hot and red and itchy!! A paste of baking soda soon takes the itch and sting out.

AMY, I also forgot to comment on the bags.  They sound beautiful.  And it also sounds like you earned it!  You might post a picture of yours so we can all envy you at the same time?

We have no-see-ems in Pennsylvania too.  As you may notice, we spelled it a bit different than you do.  Mostly I was bitten at Girl Scout Camp and went to bed in an open tent and scratched all night.  Of course, I wasn't the only scratcher in my tent!

I think it might be time to be thinking about supper pretty soon.  We're all sort of taking turns because no on actually feels up to par.  I've developed a scratchy throat and a slight cough.  I hope that's where it stays.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

I remember my poor dad, home from a fall hunting trip with both hands swelled badly. The first and only time he had an allergic reaction to them. I don't know what he did with them; I do know he didn't go to the doctor. My mom probably had an ointment or tincture.

They usually are not seen or felt unless you're in the woods. They're nasty little critters!

Good morning..

Today is a double whamy for me Mothers Day and Anniversary  :smitten:

As you know I took Kyle for more lumber the other day, what I didn't know was when he asked for help moving the trug out of the garage was that it was for me!! This one is wider than the others, so a planting we shall go :)

I cut the bottom off of celery and stuck it in water, nothing to lose if it didn't grow  but it did! Roots were forming so next was a small pot. Now it is ready for a larger growing space.

Jane, gargle with warm salt water  and if you can take Vit C .. take some..
I hope the cold does not visit you long.  Will post a photo of my bag and others she has made.

Patricia, that is how I go when I get a mulitude of bites.Thankfully the bugs only last a couple of weeks then the skeeters come out.

Better get a wiggle on and get ready to meet the day.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good morning, everyone, on this fair, sunny late spring day in the Interior!

Happy Mother's Day, and Amy, happy anniversary!

Here is a link to the Mother's Day cards in our card forum; https://www.seniorsandfriends.org/index.php?msg=235486

I haven't found a cure for a cold except to let it run its course while drinking a lot of water and an aspirin or two if needed. I also try to keep a humidifier going, especially in dry conditions.

Patricia, someone posted on BuzzFeed a few hours ago a clip showing an old cabin falling into the Tanana River. I thought of you and wondered how you are doing.

JaneS. What a wonderful picture of you and the baby.

Bubble, those bubble things kind of remind me of the old TV series, The Prisoner.

For some reason, we have an abundance of birds this season. Saw a cardinal yesterday. Shan has all of a sudden taken an interest in birds. He has been bouncing back and forth between windows to watch the show.

Hi, nice to see you here. Erosion along the many rivers in the Interior has always been an issue, but it has worsened. Pairing that with a later-than-normal, above-average snow melt and melting ice jamming the rivers and flooding has been an issue.

Another large problem is items becoming sweepers, i.e., fallen items, trees, now cabins, etc., carried along just under the surface of the river's swift current.

I was fascinated by that Prisoner.

Good morning...

Chilly out but a nice sunny day. Today will be busy as we did zip, nanda, nothing and enjoyed the day traveling yesterday.  Need to pick up more soil today and then get busy getting the trugs ready for planting. We will still have frosty nights for a while .

Patricia, thank you. We took off for the day, dogs and all. Had messages on the answering service to attend to when we got home.

MarsGal, good to see you here..

Better get the day started, seems it has running shoes on and I am in flip flops..(dislike wearing those)

Enjoy your day  and stay safe.

Good Morning Merry Sunshine!  My dad used to say that to us when we got up late in the morning on Saturdays!  It's really....

              Good Morning Merry Sunshine,
What makes your smile so bright?
you used to come at Ten O'clock
and now you come at noon!

I also used in on my kids and it just came into my head this morning.  I know you are all early risers so it doesn't apply to you!

I'm not sure what today will bring.  We already have laundry in the washer (and the dryer).  We're doing the beds!

Yesterday, Ali brought a beautiful bouquet of her flowers to her mother and she said if I wanted to, I could enjoy them too.  I do!

PATRICIA, I was looking at the pictures of the flooding in many areas of the country, including Alaska.  I feel so sorry for the peope that have to suffer through that kind of thing!  It must be very hard to bear!

AMY, you, or all people, definitely deserve a day OFF!  I hope you all enjoyed it!

I wish everyfriend a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

You used to come at ten o'clock,
But now you come at noon.

Today I am testing out the Opera browser. It seems nice so far, probably because it isn't cluttered up with all the Microsoft crap that is on Bing. Only problem so far is finding out why my Senior Learn password isn't working on Opera. Well, that is a fix for later. I am about to head for lunch. The cats are pesting for same.

Good morning, 7:40 am, and everyone is talking about being late! You're all early risers to me!

I get up, make coffee, and serve Farrah her breakfast while chatting with my meet-and-greets. At the same time, everyone here is halfway through their day!

Jane, the flooding is due to late warming trends in the Interior, but I hadn't known the other states had similar issues.

Amy, you deserve a break now and then. For me, I take too many!

Joanne, I used to use Opera and don't remember why I stopped. Microsoft keeps pushing Bing at me, and I keep ignoring it, along with Alexa, Cortana, and One Drive. Periodically I go to One Drive and delete everything they've saved.  Microsoft won't let you delete any of them, so I keep a ready hand on the delete button.

Good morning..

Calling for rain today..will work outside till put back in the house. Yesterday was a busy one, bought 3 in 1 soil to top dress the trugs . We can still get a frost or two here so holding off a bit. Don't mind planting but rather do it once not twice.

Need to make sure I have all that we need from the grocery store before the long weekend.Town will be like a sardine can with cottagers coming back to their cottage.

Better get busy..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

What I like about Opera so far: You can turn off the news feed and advertising in the settings. That gets just about all of them and makes the browser mighty fast when loading. The settings are extensive, so you can select just what you want. There is a built-in VPN you can use, but I think most of the new browsers are including one.

Meanwhile, I do not see Opera listed in the approved MS11 in S mode apps section which is annoying because it seems perfect for me on my laptop. I frowned a little when Microsoft's firewall told me Opera may not be secure and did I really want to download it? I will check on the ratings from independent sources- not that I trust MS to be totally honest there. I am investigating a couple of programs which will allow you to "sidecar" the .apk files for programs that otherwise can't run on Wndows11 in S mode. Most or all of those will be Android based I think.

I'm just up and Jim is asleep on the sofa so I'm not turning on any lights yet.  I'm typing by touch so please ignore any mistakes.

PATRICIA, the other places that have flooding is from storms.  I've forgotten where they are but I saw one on here and another one on the TV.

AMY, I agree that planting the same thing twice doesn't make much sense and it also uses ups energy!  Nice you have a new trug and a sweetie pie for a husband!

I'm not sure what's on the agenda.  Cindy is already on line doing accounting for her customers!  I sure hope they appreciate all the work she does for them.  Even though they pay her, they get EXTRA-special attention from her.

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning; cool and cloudy here at 39 degrees, our overnight low.

I see Lloyd has posted again in the Tell us about yourself forum.

Amy, No one here plants anything outside until Memorial Day on the 31st. Many will start growing in greenhouses once it starts warming.

I'm considering looking for some new plants for my two higher shelves. I'm handicapped by the state's ban on outside seeds or plants because of fears about introducing alien critters or other undesirables. A few years back, People were importing these reddish-purple decorative trees, and the state banned them, cut them all down, and hauled them away.

I'm sorry, Phyllis, you have a problem with no answers. I'm only glad they aren't able to live this far north.

No one is doing that much as it's still in the late sixties or early seventies during the day, and all the rivers are running high with either localized or low area flooding. Since many further north towns and villages depend on the rivers for highways, hunting, and fishing, it's quiet, with many freight cancellations.

Joanne, Microsoft warns against using anything they don't own or control. I'm kept busy deleting Cortana, Alexis, and One Drive, so they turn around and make it impossible to delete them. You are still stuck with a Microsoft system even if you use another browser. What frustrates me is I keep deleting private stuff on One Drive, turn around, and it's back on.

The same with Google recording your every key stoke and saving it for sale to the highest bidder, all the while using antivirus to keep others from doing the same. There is a reason Google is termed spyware in security circles.

I'd go to Apple, except it's an entirely new system with its methods, and many of my hobbies and pursuits don't work with their systems.

Amy, I would love a yard and garden but can no longer care for one. I no longer use my balcony because the new ones have five-foot walls, so you only see the sky unless you walk over to the glass. Any plants left outside wouldn't last long due to low available light. Plus, no drainage was built in, so if it rains or snows, that moisture stays until it evaporates. It still has dirt on the floor from the workers putting them in last year.

Edit; after taking so long to post, I see we've climbed to 44 degrees and have another weather alert. I think I'll go look at Amy's photos instead of another alert.

Had couple doctor appointments, no changes & I did mention this is not a life and I do have choices. I know each of them got the point but the surgeon holds all the cards & don't see him until next week.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  This is going to be a quickie because Cindy has a plan for the day and I have to be ready to join it by the time she is ready to leave her "office"!

AMY, I had a short cold.  Just some sniffles and a little clogging but I took something for it right away and it didn't hang around long!

We've been having rain and cooler weather here for the past week.  It didn't stop me from getting my walks in though, Cindy has a machine that I can walk on and I don't get wet or cold while i'm doing it.  It's inside the house!  I'm loving it and I'm sure going to miss it when I go home!

SHIRLEY, it's nice to "see" you on here.  I'm sorry we cant get together face-to-face.  I know I'd love meeting you!  Also, I looked at you little birdie and he looks pretty but very lonely!

I better get busy and get my bills paid before Cindy gets her office work to a point where she can leave it!  I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!  P.S

P.S.  LLOYD, I saw that post and I also remember it.  My grandfather used the same thing when he had a cold!

Cloudy and humid today.  Had a lot of rain last night and we needed it.  We did not have the wind damage that areas just north of us had so I pretty much slept through the rain but the lightning woke me up.

Good morning, rain; yesterday afternoon, and those clouds are back today, but we do need it. It's cooler today, but Friday, we should see eighty degrees finally!

There's nothing new here; I got my eye appointment scheduled, and the only one was on July fifth. This will be a general checkup and preparation for my cataract and floaters removal.

Besides being bored in this slow, cooler weather, everyone from the meets and greets society is well. Those who recently sold land would be out preparing it and seeing to their animals. Sitting on their hands is not good when they're used to doing.

My sister, in Idaho, has taken on redoing her house and yard. She had the contractors in to do some of the major work, and now she is doing the basics, resurfacing and or painting walls, redoing counters, and putting in shelves.

When she was sixteen, she had one of those small red Chevy Luves Pickups and refurbished the insides with upholstered red gingham. I remember someone came out and did an article for the paper with pictures, and she hasn't slowed down since then. She is the youngest, ten years younger than me, and surprised my parents.

I also answered your message to get my hugs and kisses while I can!  Who knows!  This could be my last chance!  But I know for a fact that Emma and Mikey will remember me!  And I feel their love!

I also forgot to say "GOOD MORNING" to everyone who comes by today.

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good Night Everyfriend!  We're going to be off to the haystacks early around here.  I'm still on PA time and that makes it an hour later for me than for everyone else.

JIM's back on his feet and feeling lots better.  He was the cook for dinner tonight and it was GOOD!  I even managed to close my eyes a while to rest them from trying to read a book in regular print.  I don't have a problem with large print books but the regular print slows me down.  I borrowed this one from my daughter Christy's husband.  It's about Northern soldiers in Southern prison camp and it was written by the prisoners themselves.  It's not fiction: it's the real stuff!

I guess I better get done what I have to do before it's time to head for the haystack.  I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow!  God Bless!

Good morning...

Will try and put some of the garden in today, I cut the seed potatoes up to dry out a bit and if they aready they will go in the ground today. We have a fellow coming to pick up his try he ordered last year later on today.

Jane, good to hear Jim is feeling much better.

Patricia, are your trees leafing out? Do you have lilacs there?  Soon we will have the scent of lilac when sitting out or when I am in the garden.

Better put an egg in my boot and beat it.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Jane, that sounds like it might be the Andersonville prison near Ft. Sumter. Nasty piece of business that was. Of about 43,000 POW's around 13,000 died. I still have it somewhere among the books I downloaded from Project Gutenberg. I assume your Hubby is reading a newer, more comprehensive account. If it was written post 2018, it will likely include the archeological dig results from that time period. I know that they were in the process of doing work at the site and at some point, discovered a spring that had some significance regarding the health of the prisoners. If I remember correctly, it was from that spring they got their water, but it was downslope of a confederate barracks which polluted the prisoner's water source and contributed to the horrific condition of the prisoners.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  It's thundering and pouring rain here this morning and it's supposed to last most of the day.  I sure hope it stops in time for Ali to get her flowers ready for market for tomorrow.

MarsGal, my book is about the Richmond Prison and the prisoners never give up the thought of escaping to the North and making it to the Union lines.  But they are underfed, mistreated and malnourished. It's called "The Great Escape" and described as "A True American Civil War Adventure".  If you're interested, it was written by Douglas Miller.  I'd be interested in the author's name of the one you describe and I bet my SIL would like it too.

AMY, good luck with your taters.  I sure hope you get them in.  I'm going to have to hit the Farmers Market at home and stock up on my canned taters this year.  I hope I'm not missing all the beets!  My beet relish is down to the last two jars!

I better get on my horse and get some stuff done.  The boys are being dropped off here about 10 and my services will be needed.  And even if they werent needed, I'd want to play!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

I thought of Andersonville, too, MarsGal, but I know that Richmond was also notorious.  I started Andersonville some time back but I just didn't want to read it at that time.  I tend to let those horror-filled non-fiction books about terrible times depress me.  I have always been upset at man's inhumanity to man no matter who, when, or where. Think I'll skip the Richmond book, as well, and stick to my British cozies.

Rainy here and we need it.  Also, it means that neither David or I need to do yardwork.

Take care.

Good morning from a dreary Colorado morning. We have been having a wonderful amount of rain.  I am thankful, but due to this we are having issues tying to keep our new patio furniture dry.  We bought one of the garden containers to store the cushions in.  After measuring and looking at many we bought one. Brought it home in a box.  Bob put it together‼️ UGH‼️ it is just slightly too small.  We covered the furniture with a tarp as soon as we felt the cushions we dry enough...tied it all down and the wind managed to get under it and off it came😩 The weekend is to be warmer so we hope to get this furniture dry and back in useable condition.

We have a Bluebird nest in one of our trees and can not wait to see the babies. We have had many Western Tangiers sites recently.  They are so colorful you think someone's parakeet must have gotten loose. We also have been inundated with moth millers😳

I hope EVERYFRIEND will have a wonderful weekend. We will be celebrating Dr Dave's 52nd Birthday on Sunday. Sadly our Michele's Birthday follows, then their 29th Wedding Anniversary followed by the two year date of her passing 😩😢

Good morning; it's sunny at our low of 57, and we're forecast to reach a possible 80 today. I'm not sure about that, but it'd be nice.

Amy, yes, we do have lilacs; those and peonies are two of our most significant seed exports. We must be careful in planting them and putting them in raised beds as there is so much moisture in the soil with all the rivers, creeks, ponds, and lakes.

We had our late-season greening yesterday. Some say they can see the earliest touch of green, but I never have. It will start and be over in less than an hour; all the trees and bushes in sight will suddenly go from brown and gray to green.

I've heard something about that history, Jane, and Joanne, but now I want to look up that book. I believe the account I read was on Slate or someplace similar. Thanks, Jane, for that information! Now I have two books I want to read as I've never heard of the Richmond prison and its story.

I remember my folks preparing seed potatoes; my sisters and I were management's labor in those days with an acre yearly planted.

I wish I knew how or had the determination to can food. I pay for a delivered food share each summer from Calypso farms, and there are several local seasonal farmer's markets and one year around indoor organic and local farmer's markets.

In Delta Junction, ninety-eight miles south of us, there are numerous farms, Russian Old Believers, and other farm stands. But unless someone is feeling generous and drives, I never get that way. There are buses, but that presents other issues.

Phyllis, I often read before sleeping each night, and I've noticed I'm affected by that book's emotions.

Morning Lloyd! It's nice to see you posting here!

Good morning, Jenny! It sounds like this month will be full of ups and downs. I know you will be there for them and yourselves if needed.

Jane, I keep meaning to ask if the flowers she sells are real or artificial bouquets. I had a long ago friend that had a big business of selling artificial arrangements. At one point he met a neighbor of mine at one of the shows they have around the country for commercial wholesalers. They are all dead now. I did a Google & business gone. I used to do a couple art shows a year & sell everything so I had a reason to paint more. My fun was talking to the people. Also liked the money.

Jenny, we have those moths & if bigger would be a plague like "the birds". Open any door & a dozen will come up. So many ups & down in life, but sounds like you have helped the kids to keep on with their world. Haven't seen a photo of that big boy out west lately, how's he doing?  Just thought I'd offer to trade bodies, too bad that they wear out like this, huh? I gave up on my lawn furniture, had covers for it but like yours, wouldn't stay on in this wind. Love to see all your birds. Got a photo of a western bluebird first trip to CO & never saw another. Lots of humming birds at the campgrounds! The southern part of CO had those big magpies, BIG ones.

Patricia, I've wished for a lilac all thru the years & never had one grow for me. Not many around here but see one on my route to the grocery store & think about stopping to see if they would sell me a bouquet. On a hard place to stop so never did it.

I'm one that quit reading because I have to finish the book or can't go to sleep. I have a history book written 20 years after the Civil War, interesting thinking at that time. I started going through the old Reader's Digest condensed books at a book fair one year & got hooked on them for a while.

Hi, Lloyd, we finally got some of that rain Callie has been sending up our way. Think it may hit you later. They say our wheat crop will be bad this year. Careful with those bees, you don't want anyone else to have to do the job for you!

Phyllis, so sorry about the critters in your attic! Is it wrong to have an exterminator spray the attic?  I'm pretty cozy with critters but have my limits!

Got a problem, I left the pool gate open today so Tiger could find some grass to eat & forgot to close it & see a rabbit is inside, better put on the battery pack & chase it out & close that gate!

Love y'all, sweet dreams & God Bless.  Tisie/Shirley

Jane/Phyllis, just one more Andersonville book. Instead of checking the Gutenberg website, I actually looked at what I do have downloaded. The Maille book is a short one, but this one, published in 1879, is the one I actually have downloaded to my eReader. It is written in two volumes by John McElroy. Titled Andersonville, the title page inside reads "Andersonville: A story of rebel military Prisons. Fifteen Months a guest of the so-called southern confederacy, a private soldier's experience in Richmond, Andersonville, Savannah, Millen, Blackshear and Florence, by John McElroy, Late of Co. L. 16th Ill Cav. 1879." I am getting the impression that these guys were moved around a lot from prison to prison.

Another interesting book note: I just discovered that Bridge over the River Kwai and Planet of the Apes were written by a French author, Pierre François Marie Louis Boulle. I never read the books, and it has been a long, long time since I saw the movies. I would have thought Bridge Over the River Kwai was written by a Brit.

I have been dealing with a cold, an honest to G cold. I haven't had one of those in 20 years or more. Can't imagine where I got it from because I am not out much. Anyway, it is finally starting to subside. Oscar was staying close, but as of yesterday afternoon decided I don't need such close watching. Bless his big heart. Maybe tomorrow I can get out and finish mowing my yard.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  Cindy and I will be on our way to the Farmers Market soon.

SHIRLEY, Ali's flowers are REAL!  She grows them out in the country on a lot that they are planning to build a house on someday!  She also gets some of them started in a greenhouse that Jim and Cindy had set up in their yard.  So she's here to water and them at least once a week.  In the meantime, the farmer in Jim comes out and he helps her out with that.  And sometimes he goes to the lot with her to tend the flowers.  I think he just can't resist either.  The pictures I posted in the photos look real to to me.  You'd have to back up to see them.  It's been a while since I posted them.

MarsGal, I'm going to have to look up that book about Andersonville.  I copied the name and the auther and wrote some notes so I don't forget why I wrote it down.  Thans for the info!  I wouldn't be surprised if my SIL has a copy of that one too.  He reads a lot!

I have to go get something to eat before we head for the Farmers Market.  If I didn't answer some questions, I'll try to hit them the next time.

JENNY, it's always good to see you in here.  Enjoy the good and remember the good things about your DIL.  I'm sure she is still loved and misses.

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Tisie, the critter(s) in the attic problem has been going on for a long time.  Yesterday I called the boss of the removal company that I hired.  Told him I wasn't happy with the fact that the technicians did not show up when promised and only did partial work that had been promised by the company.  I told him that I felt I should attempt to find someone else.
He agreed to cancel the contract.  In fact, I think he was eager to do that.  I think it had turned out to be a job he couldn't seem to handle.  Now, back to finding someone who will complete the job as promised....if such a company even exists anymore.  The lack of trustworthy businesses around here is a VERY big problem.

Now that's a winner & true-ism, Bubble. Got a smile out of me!

Have you been to see the flowers growing, Jane? Love a photo of that field. Like candy for the eyes (so to say). I used to drive past some fields in Colorado that were just flowers, not sure if grown for seeds or what, but all one kind.

Phyllis, hope you find someone with more consideration for the HUMANS than the critters this time! Remind them who pays the taxes on that house!   :tickedoff:  :whip2:  :whip:  :rosegal:

Good morning..

Mainly sunny today..no rain until Tue they say. Will try and get the rest of the garden in by then but today is a day of rest.

There seemed to be no let up on trafic yesterday and I would imagine tomorrow will be the same way only heading back.

No firecrackers let off last night either!  My friend told me a comment she read on the internet, instead of buying fireworks which cost upto a 100.00 or more buy two bags of dog/cat food and give it to the humane society. Money well spent then. If you want to see something beautful, look up into the sky at night.

Phyllis, I hope you can get ride of your unwanted guests. Here ,it is the lack of help for any business.

Jane ,did you tell Jim that his JETS are being made not just in the US?

Patricia, the all day rain was much needed here. I see the lilacs are about ready to open also the flowering crab blossoms.

Bubble, I passed on your lucky 5y and they loved it. Thank you.

Better get on with the day.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

The Lincoln-Kennedy coincidences

Lincoln was elected President in 1860 and Kennedy was elected in 1960 exactly 100 years later. There are seven letters in each name, both Presidents were assassinated on Friday and both in the presence of their wives.

Both were directly concerned with civil rights and both had the legality of their elections contested.

President Kennedy's secretary's name was Lincoln, who warned him not to go to Dallas; Lincoln's secretary's name was Kennedy, who warned him not to go to the theater.

Both of their successors' names were Johnson, Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson. Each name contains 13 letters. Both men served in the U.S. Senate and both were southern Democrats. Andrew Johnson was born in 1808 and Lyndon Johnson was born in 1908.

Booth and Oswald were both southerners favoring unpopular ideas. Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and hid in a theater and Booth shot Lincoln in a theater and hid in a warehouse.

Booth and Oswald were both murdered before a trial could be arranged. Booth and Oswald were born 100 years apart and each name, Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth, has 15 letters.

Good morning..

There were some fireworks last night but they didn't seem to bother Babe and she settled down for the night.

Putzed a bit in the garden, checking things out ,getting it ready to plant the rest of the seeds today. Bugs were bad making it impossible to have tea outside. Need the dragonflies out to put the run on them.

Today, will finish off the garden, then sit back and wait for it to grow. A nice tomato picked fresh, still warm from the sun in a toasted tomato sandwich is worth the wait.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I hope you all missed me yesterday!  I had a bad day and there's no computer where I spent most of it...upstairs right next to the bedroom!  With a lot of time on the bed!

Cindy is doing her once-a-month thing in Dallas today.  She left yesterday afternoon and does a short visit and an overnight with a good friend then spends Monday at the office and drives back home!  Jim and I are keeping house!

Since Cindy wasn't home, the dogs chose to sleep with me last night.  I've had two dogs in my bed many times of the the years but mine both weighed less than 30 pounds and took up a lot less room than these two.  They're bot upwards of 70 pounds!  Jake got down once but it wasn't long before he was back up and keeping my feet warm!

BUBBLE, like Shirley said I've read that treasure poem before and I loved it but I didn't keep a copy.  Now I will!  Thanks for being so versatile.  You always have something special to share!

AMY, I don't think I've ever wished for dragonfiies in my entire life!  I guess I never put 2 and 2 together and figured out they'd eat the other biters!

DON, I've read that Lincoln/Kennedy writing more than once and it always sends chills down my back!  I'll have a copy of that one too!  Thanks for the reminder!

JENNY, I hope you all have a good time on Dr. Dave's birthday! He sure does deserve a nice day.  In fact, you all deserve a nice day!

PATRICIA, good morning to you!

PHYLLIS, I sure hope you get rid of your "attic residents"!  I've been through that but mine were squirels.  It turns out it was a whole family.  They got them out and closed up the hole.  Then the tree was also trimmed so they couldn't get near the house and NO more squirrels!

I guess I better get moving a get some stuff done before the day slips away.  Yesterday, was a do nothing day for me!

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

The sun is going to have to work to get our temp up, starting out at 39° at the moment heading to 79° today.

Garden is just about done, need to plant garlic and one tomato plant and that is it.

Flowering crab is in blossom and so are the lilacs, just wish they would stay out longer than they do.

Watched Oak Island last night and they left you hanging till the fall! A lot of history in what they are finding..

Jane ,happy to read you are back to feeling better. Jesse is 99lbs and Babe is 83 lbs so I know what you mean. Great for warming the bed though.

We're going to be sitting out on the porch for a while this morning while Cindy's cleaning lady(s) get the downstairs cleaned and I think we can come in when they move upstairs.  I'm glad it's not raining!  I still have to pack up my computer stuff and haul it upstairs to join the "stuff" on the bed until after they leave.

So sorry about your accident, Lloyd. I've broken a rib 3 different times & it took exactly 6 weeks each time to quit hurting. I was 30 years younger & doing something dumb at the time, not falls. We sure have a time knowing our limits, don't we?

I had a busy day shopping for some clothes I didn't have to pin up to hold up. Down to a size 0 in a pair of Chico jean/pants & I can slid them down without unzipping. I think it was Helona in OK that enjoyed my fav bargain store. 75& off everything & then they have sales so I was willing to spend for a few outfits that may be worn a short time. My daughter took me & we spent more than 2 hours "pickin' & trying on". After we ate I took a late nap while she had other things to do.

She has been gone so I've had several weeks to wander around the house with no real schedule. Echocardiogram tomorrow & visit with the surgeon next day so hope to end this nightmare soon.

Amy, I have all the dirt mixings but still haven't gotten the different kinds of lettuce, endive & spinach seeds, should be planted by now.

With your dog walkings, Jane, I think you have done a great job of keeping fit. Don't know if your "kids" visit NBC (short for name brand clothing), I think the first store  was in OK. Had my first visit in a long time. My daughter kept discovering things she has in her own closet that she paid full price for, one was a dressy jacket she paid over $1,000 for & was only $25. with the sale today. Cas used to call these shopping trips "my therapy" because they change everything every week & move from store to store. Factory buy outs, store buy outs, never know what you might find.

Guess I'd better get busy, want to clean off this table & came up with a plan so here I am. Had my sliding door open a couple inches, heard fire trucks across the river, didn't smell smoke. After solving world problems in my head I got up.

Sweet dreams to all. I'll go back to bed in an hour or so, maybe a few Ritz crackers with peanut butter to tide me over till breakfast. Tisie/Shirley

Thank you Oldiesmann, for keeping track of us!

Good morning..

Another busy day ahead of us. Today the delivery of the shinlges this morning.,then I am off in th afternoon to get my hair cut. Tomorrow we are off to deliver planter boxes . We haven't been to that area in a while so the drive will be nice..

Lloyd, guess you are being told to slow down a bit. Please take it easy. Finding a comfy sleeping postiton is going to be difficult for you.

Shirley, we still have frost warning here so no tomato plants in yet but soon I hope.  Planted parsnips in a place that they can stay in over winter, should be nice and sweet to dig come next Spring.

Bubble, thank you for posting the photo of the Flowering Crab tree. That night we had a rain and now the ground is peppered with pink blossoms. We did need the rain but not as bad as Alberta and other areas with forest fires.

Oldiesman ,thank you for your help.

Enjoy your day and stay safe

Amy. - Way back when I would grow tomatoes I would get them out and in the ground as early as I could. If there was a chance of night frost I would cover then with an overturned garbage can (kept them pretty clean), or a 5 gallon plastic "sheet rock compound" can. A rock on top to keep them in place. By the time they outgrew those containers it was frost free time.

As to PARSNIPS - Few around here seem to know what they are, or what they are missing. I liked them but a certain family event has ruined my desire for them. My younger son was the master at cooking them, usually for Holiday meals. He's no longer with us, and I have not been able to enjoy them since. But considering all the butter he used it might be best I don't do that anyway.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I sent a movie of baby Cam's first "rollover" and she loved the picture but she couldn't figure out how to post a movie.  So Cindy tried to post it and it wouldn't go for her either.  I think she said she posted the picture of him one way and the the other way but I haven't checked.

LLOYD, I'm so sorry to hear that you took a fall and are suffering the effects of it.  Please be careful and HOLD ON to whatever is available when you walk!

SHIRLEY, I asked Cindy about the store and she immediately picked up her phone to see what I was talking about.  She found one and I think she said it's about 7 miles from where she lives.  I'm betting we'll be checking it out one of these days!

RICK, I remember that my dad planted parsnips and so did my sister in later years.  I do not remember eating them but if they were on the dinner table when I was growing up, I ate them.  We had to take what my mother referred to as a "no-thank-you" helping of everything!

AMY, have a nice trip today.  It's always nice to enjoy a rid to somewhere you haven't been in a while!

I guess I better get on my horse and get moving or I won't be ready when it's time go "go do stuff". I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow@

Good morning; this has been a roller coaster week weatherwise; we have been under an extreme fire alert and a flood alert, but no actual incidences. They're saying there "will be a significant rain event from Friday through the weekend."

There go our seventies and eighties, but for most people who use the multiple rivers as highways for hunting, transport, and goods and services, this is terrible news as the rivers have already run high since breakup with many sweepers just below the surface current.

Lloyd, as one who also has balance issues, please take care. I have a hard time trying to do what I was used to, but there comes a time when it's no longer worth it.

Jane, it sounds like you're having a wonderful time with your family and all the grandkids. I envy you as my closest family is three thousand miles away. My sister and I email regularly, but it's different.

Amy, enjoy your trip and a different view. You and Jane must have some special energy source to keep on as you have. I can do chores and then wait until the next day to finish the lot as my energy comes and goes.

We are trying to plan something for the first week in June, but I don't know if this will work out or not. Claire is trying to plan a barbeque for everyone at her place and perhaps spring Alan and Dora for the day, but we shall see.

We just got back in the house.  Cindy took me to get a haircut.  It was getting so no one could see my eyes or my ears and my nose was the next to go!  I feel simply light-headed.

Then we proceded to Ali's house and took the two older two kids to the playground while she put baby Cam down for a nap and finished her weekly cleaning!  I found out two things...I can't walk as fast as a two year old on a scooter, and...I can't walk as fast as the 6 year old on a bike!

It was a lot of fun trying, though!

Good morning...

Another day where no grass grows under ones feet! Needed to get out of here yesterday before the big truck came with the shingles so I wouldn't be late for my hair appointment. Came home to find everything set up for Mon for the men to do the work  on the roof.

Today is the trip to my friends to deliver and pick up then home to chase dust kangaroos!!

Rick, I love parsnips as they are or mashed with carrots, cuddled up to a roast of beef in the oven and in chicken soup!
I have also done that too, covering with a pail. A neighbour has a good idea, he brings home lawnmowers that no longer work, takes the motor off of them and they put their tomatoes in a huge pot on the lawnmower. When there is a threat of frost they wheel that into a portable garage for the night then wheel it back out in the morning.

Jane,my hair is much shorter now also!! Last time I got it cut was back in Oct so it was time for it to go! Must admit to a chuckle to you not being able to keep up to the younguns. They go 150 MPH and you only go 100 MPH.

Patricia,at times one wonders how they did all they did when younger. Now, some jobs get put off till tomorrow or the next day. :) Sooner or later they will get done..

Better  get going ,need to pick some rhubarb to take with us today.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  I have to make this short and then head for the hill and get myself dressed and ready to hit the trail.  Cindy says we're going to the local "Books-A-Million" store sometime today to check out what they have in large print.  I asked her if she was sure she wanted to do that with a book addict like me!  Her answer..."we'll you mothered one like me.  I'm an addict, too".

AMY, have a nice visit with your friend!  And drive carefully!

I wish Everyfriend a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning, another sleepless night and late morning. Our "Friday through the weekend significant rain event" began Thursday evening at about eight.

Farrah and I had a wash and breakfast this morning, bed made, and dishes washed and put away. And I'm on my first coffee.

Amy, managing that sooner or later, they're getting done rule in this household means making sure that rule doesn't get extended too far.

That promised barbeque may be rescheduled as a roadside overflow has cut some folks off from the highway, and Alan and Dora are doing physical therapy in-house. Their building is one wing of the main hospital building so that they can use the medical facilities. They are across a courtyard from the other wing that houses patients' family members.

Not much is happening here; I'm still stuffed from that cold. I've found that Allegra, an allergy med works just as well as cold medicine and is once daily rather than multiple times daily.

Good afternoon EVERYFRIEND‼️

Keep trying my best to post more often but I am not getting it done.  Just too much going on dern it‼️

Three doc appointments this week.......they are wearing me down‼️😩
My internist that I saw on Monday was not happy that I am considering surgery on my neck without a second opinion😩  so I have been jumping through hoops to try to get one set up. I saw the surgeon today at a follow up appointment from my epidural shot  for my back.  Told him and he seemed a little irritated at the doc for questioning this surgery. He was very nice and explained in detail AGAIN why this surgery is necessary etc. I will see the second opinion surgeon next Tuesday. I found out today they are in the same medical building.

My Tuesday appointment was with the blood oncologist.  He assured me I am fine and apologized for having me get blood work done AGAIN as it was a mess up in his office😡😡😡 I did not hear WE WON'T BE CHARGING YOU😡😡😡 Still feel better to know that ALL is fine as I was quite concerned whenI saw the results of my lab with some HIGH readings that sure did not look like nothing‼️

SANDY, you are right....bad days are not fun, and YES they are coming around more often😡

JANE, happy to read you are feeling better today❣️

Delays again.....

Dr. Dave and family did enjoy time together on his birthday.  The family over all are doing well....it is just difficult at these momentous times to not have sad feelings about Michele no longer being with us.

No plans for Memorial Day. We are going up to see our other son and his family on Sunday.  It is dial's birthday and the our baby is turning ONE on the second so will celebrate his day too. Only day our son can be off.....golf clubs are VERY busy this time of year. His club is hosting the women's PGA qualifiers this coming week and no time for Leon's Birthday later on the day.

I have to run.....my best to you ALL.

Jenny

Late night for me but had a nice nap this afternoon. Got the chocolate cake out of the oven & cooled enough to put the icing on (anybody grow up eating that choc cake that had the cup of boiling water poured into the batter before hitting the oven?) Icing on & taste test so that is it for today.

Happy to see everyone that reports in, love y'all. Sweet dreams & God Bless. Tisie/Shirley :sleepy:

Good morning...

A beautiful sunny morning starting at 38° and heading close to 80°.

We are without wheels till maybe Mon or Tue. Many times we tried to start the vehicle ,sometimes it would kick over other times not. Young tow truck drive got in to try, first try the motor started!  Then a phone call from friends in the south said they were coming up for a visit and to look at the garden tiller which they took back home with them. I have no need of the tiller and they can use it plus it is in good hands as he is a mechanic. While out checking over the tiller the neighbour at the back passed a 18 coloured eggs over the fence, now we have green, blue, brown and white eggs in the fridge.

Today laundry and baking...isn't that exciting?

Shirley, I remember  that cake ,nice moist cake.

Jenny, there was a time we would say if it wsn't for Dr appointments we wouldn't go anywhere. We did manage to do the chemo in one day not two back to back so that was a blessing. All,well most of it is in the rear view mirror now. I hope that it will be all in the past for you and you can enjoy life.

Patricia, hope that cold is soon gone!

Jane, did you load up the car with books to read?

Better shake a leg and get going.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!  It's nice to see "People" in here when I come in!

JENNY, keep on keeping on!  The doctor had no right to be miffed when you were getting a second opinion.  He should have asked for one himself.

SHIRLEY,  the cake sounds DEEE-licious!  Could you put a couple pieces out in the SS for those of us who are sitting here licking our lips?

AMY, nice that you're friend made the trip to you but too bad you missed the ride that you hadn't taken in a bit.

Cindy just came by and said she's on the way up to get ready to go to the Farmers Market.  I always like to see Ali's set up of flowers.  They are always "attractive"!  And I have some stuff on my list that I want to buy!

I guess I better get on my horse and get moving...or should I put an egg in my boot and beat it?

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning, sunny day here, but the rains return tomorrow, and all the rivers are running high with (some minor, so far) flooding. Claire's barbeque is canceled as she has no money to fly us in or out and can't get to the store across the waters anyway.

Bubble, different breeds can lay different egg colors; we have some here in the farmers' markets. I've known some people that are leery of eating them as "It's not normal."  ::)

I don't have anything planned today other than the usual daily chores. I spent some extra time in the meets and greets this morning as everyone was bemoaning the rain, the rivers, and on and on. I'd hate to believe this is the new normal.

Not enough hours in the day it seems. Laundry dried on the solar dryer and then we were busy with folks wanting the trugs. One trug was loaded  on a truck and the other will be going out on Wed. The part I enjoy is meeting people and their dogs.

No baking got done and I am not about to start now. :)))

Bubble ,thank you for posting the photo of the eggs. I enjoy going back to see the hens and rooster, giving them vegetables scraps etc. I do know this time I am NOT naming this rooster... last rooster,Horacio went into the stew pot . :(

Most of the Interior is farming country with numerous farms and several roadside farm stands. When I was able to visit those farms regularly, I used to love visiting, and while I enjoyed the freshness of the food, I felt sad for the number of small baby animals also offered for sale, knowing their lives wouldn't be that long.

Claire has several rabbits, chickens, and ducks kept in topped pens with four sides extending four feet underground and electrified. She has beehives, llamas, alpacas, two horses, three goats, four dogs, and several property cameras to keep everything safe.

Cindy and I did some shopping this morning at the Farmers Market and tonight we had oven baked radishes and potatoes done my me and shrimp on top of the stove done by Cindy.  It was a goooooooood supper!  And there are leftovers for tomorrow!

We did some shopping this afternoon and I came home with a bag full of goodies to try to take home to PA.  I don't know if they'll last long enough for that but we shall see!

I'm going up and take one more walk on the treadmill and then I'm collapsing for the rest of the evening and the night, too!  It's been a busy day!

AMY, the egg in my boot was green for GO!

I'm not sure what tomorrow will bring.  When Cindy and I left the electricity had just gone off.  We wondered if it would be back in time for supper but Jim texted us while we were gone that it was back on about an hour and a half later!  YAY!!

Now I'm of to the treadmill.  Have a good rest of the day!

I loved the colored egg.....seems they have more flavor.  We lost our local contact for these eggs when there was a bird flu here that wiped out many chickens😩

JANE, I was a bit taken back when the surgeon seemed to take offense too.  He even said that my internal medicine doc should stick to doing blood pressure and the like vs questioning a board certified surgeon‼️🤪🤪. Your day of shopping sounded like a lot of fun.  I'm a thinking most of your farmer's market purchases will not make it back home with you🤪🤪🤪 but I hope they will‼️

AMY, I for some dumb reason never anticipated being in my shoes.  There were very little medical issues in my family and I have always been healthy....then that fall two years ago seemed to change it ALL. It is what I have been dealt so I must deal with it.....as many in our group do🤪🤪🤪. I sure do appreciate the continuing support you all give me🥰🥰 Sorry you are without wheels😩

SHIRLEY, I do remember that cake.....it always made me wonder WHY that cup of water was necessary.....but it did‼️

PATRICIA, I am sorry Claire's BBQ  was canceled 😠  I would love to visit her menagerie‼️

Just finished watching our granddaughter dancing her solo at Disney Land. She danced beautifully....of course🥰🥰🥰

SWEET DREAMS TO ALL‼️

Thanks Jenny but as it's a working farm, she'd probably put you to work straight away!

She is the only one still owning land and doesn't plan to move into town like others.

I once questioned the iron fences electrified and extending four feet down. She reminded me that wolves, foxes, and bears were quite good at digging, and she had seen those unsuccessful attempts. Which is why they're also topped and sturdily built.

She supplies me with fresh raw honey at only $8.00 a quart, which is a nice change from the honey in the supermarkets.

The day is starting out at 38° but heading to 84°!  Friends are stopping to exchange items we have for each other this morning. Today I had better whip up some cookies and fill the containers again.

Patricia, I am with Jenny and I would love to help out on that farm. We also had elecric fences, just above ground though.

Shirley, that is on of the songs that would be sung when it was time for everyone to head to bed..last campfire song for the evening.

Amy, there was a video circulating last winter showing a grizzly digging up a black bear den. After several moments of intense digging, suddenly, Mama black bear and two cubs explode out. The grizzly catches one cub, but Mama and the other cub escape. This is why the electrified fences extend so far down while the tops deter golden eagles, owls, and hawks.

We're at our low of fifty but probably won't go further with the sporadic rain we've had since Thursday night and....."Heavy Rainfall and Cooler Temps Sunday Night through Tuesday...

Heavy rain showers move into the Fortymile Uplands Sunday afternoon and move west into the Chena River Basin and Eastern Alaska Range Sunday night and Memorial Day. Periods of copious rainfall will result in an area of 1 to 3 inches of rainfall from Isabel Pass to Chena Hot Springs and east toward Tanacross.

Fairbanks area and the White Mountains will also see periods of moderate rain showers. Temperatures by Monday will remain in the 50s with 40s in the Alaska Range."

Good Morning Everyfriend!  And Good-Everything-Else-I-missed!  We've been super busy the last few days and last night we decided that we should watch a war movie to celebrate Memorial Day!  So we looked for the Audie Murphy one about his army life and it wasn't on.  So we ended up with "The Dirty Dozen".  It's full of stars and it's a good movie!

Then it was time to hit the hay so I didn't get on the computer at all last night!

JENNY, it sounds like you have a *STAR* in your family!  That must have been exciting to see your granddaughter doing a solo in a place like Disney Land!  She must be a very good dancer!

AMY, don't forget to put some cookies in the Soda Shoppe.  I could use one or two.  Jim bought some at the Farmers Market and we've downed them all.  I think I'm going to have to go home and get back on my sugar-free diet before I have my next Dr. appt!

This morning my only plan is a walk on the treadmill, a shower and a change of clothes.  I'm hoping for a shopping trip one of these days but I'm pretty sure today will bring a visit from the kids.  I'm looking forward to that, too!

For now, I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Weatherwise it has been a dreary weekend with nothing but rain.  That's OK since we didn't go anywhere or plan a cook out.  Just stayed in and relaxed and ate Beef Kabobs cooked in the oven.  They were pretty good.  And, I was so relieved to have the raccoon gone and all the repair work done.  And a lot of preventive screening done on gable vents, etc.  I hope I never have to go through that again.  Now, I need to find a company that will do siding repair and painting.  I've let maintenance go too long and now am trying to catch up.  But, all in due time.

Watched the Capitol Memorial celebration last night.  It brought back so many memories of my father, brothers, and husband, and cousins and so many friends.  Father was in Army in WW I, all three brothers were in Navy (2) and Marines(1) during WW 2, husband was in Air Force during Korean War.  They all came home, thank God, but many friends and a cousin did not. Our generation has lived through so much war and it's extreme emotional cost.

Take care, All.

I've also been watching the film taken during WWII, that we only heard the words, surprising it is much like I pictured. Keep saying to myself, "I remember those exact moments".  I had a brother in the Air Corp, one in the Navy, uncle in the SeaBees & too many others including the cousin nurses, that served. My husband was in the Air Force during the Korean War & I served nearly 3 years of his duty with him in England. Sight of the Statue of Liberty on return had tears rolling down my face until we finally got off to hug the brother that had driven from Missouri to take us home. :aaah:

Good morning, 47 degrees here and the rain and cooler temperatures are expected through Tuesday. ".Periods of Moderate Rainfall and Cooler Temps through Tuesday...

Moderate rain showers will continue across the Fortymile Uplands and Eastern Alaska Range and move west into the Chena River Basin into Memorial Day. Periods of moderate rainfall will result in an area of 1 to 2 inches of storm total rainfall in the Fortymile Uplands, with lesser totals of around one half to 1.5 inches in the Fairbanks area, White Mountains, Central and Eastern Alaska Range, and Minto Flats. Temperatures by Monday will fall into the 50s with 40s in the Alaska Range.

This rain will likely cause a rapid rise in river and streams across the Southeast Interior and Eastern Alaska Range. This includes the Chena, Chatanika, Goodpaster, Salcha River, and the Fortymile River. People along rivers and streams should prepare for high water levels through this weekend. River access points and gravel bars will likely be covered with water along with increased debris in rivers."

My parents came from sizeable midwestern farming families of sixteen combined who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Both of my husbands served in Vietnam.

My father was in the Navy, and part of his last service in WWII and Korea was brutal; he would never talk about the wars, but what his brothers shared was horrifying. Man's inhumanity was well documented.

I didn't watch anything on the computer as all the wet has messed with my sinuses and arthritis. I had another restless night and got up at four am. I'll be glad for Tuesday and the promised sunshine. Alaskaland opens on the 30th. But I think attendance will be sparse. They usually have a flyover of some group, such as the Blue Angels and howitzers, signaling the end of the celebration. Still, with the steady rain, it will probably be different.

A Tale of Six Boys

Each year, I am hired to go to Washington, DC with the eighth grade class from Clinton, WI where I grew up, to videotape their trip. I greatly enjoy visiting our nation's capitol, and each year, I take some special memories back with me. This fall's trip was especially memorable.

On the last night of our trip, we stopped at the Iwo Jima memorial. That memorial is the largest bronze statue in the world and depicts one of the most famous photographs in history; that of the six brave soldiers raising the American flag at the top of a rocky hill on the island of Iwo Jima, Japan during WWII.

Over one hundred students and chaperones piled off the buses and headed toward the memorial. I noticed a solitary figure at the base of the statue, and as I got closer, he asked, "Where are you guys from?"

I told him we were from Wisconsin. "Hey, I'm a cheese head, too! Come gather around, cheese heads, and I will tell you a story."

James Bradley just happened to be in Washington, DC to speak at the memorial the following day. He was there that night to say goodnight to his dad, who has since passed away. He was just about to leave when he saw the buses pull up. I videotaped him as he spoke to us, and received his permission to share what he said from my videotape. It is one thing to tour the incredible monuments filled with history in Washington, D.C., but it is quite another to get the kind of insight we received that night. When all had gathered around, he reverently began to speak. (Here are his words from that night).

"My name is James Bradley and I'm from Antigo, Wisconsin. My dad is on that statue, and I just wrote a book called "Flags of Our Fathers," which is number five on the New York Times Best Seller list right now. It is the story of the six boys you see behind me."

"Six boys raised the flag. The first guy putting the pole in the ground is Harlon Block. Harlon was an all-state football player. He enlisted in the Marine Corps with all the senior members of his football team. They were off to play another type of game. A game called 'war,' but it didn't turn out to be a game."

"Harlon, at the age of 21, died with his intestines in his hands. I don't say that to gross you out. I say that, because there are people who stand in front of this statue and talk about the glory of war. You guys need to know that most of the boys in Iwo Jima were 17, 18 and 19 years old."

(He pointed to the statue). "You see this next guy? That's Rene Gagnon from New Hampshire. If you took Rene's helmet off at the moment this photo was taken and looked in the webbing of that helmet, you would find a photograph. A photograph of his girlfriend. Rene put that in there for protection, because he was scared. He was 18 years old. Boys won the battle of Iwo Jima, boys, not old men."

"The next guy here, the third guy in this tableau, was Sergeant Mike Strank. Mike is my hero. He was the hero of all these guys. They called him the "old man," because he was so old. He was already 24. When Mike would motivate his boys in training camp, he didn't say, 'Let's go kill some Japanese' or 'Let's die for our country.' He knew he was talking to little boys. Instead, he would say, 'You do what I say, and I'll get you home to your mothers.'"

"The last guy on this side of the statue is Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Arizona. Ira Hayes walked off Iwo Jima. He went into the White House with my dad. President Truman told him, 'You're a hero.' He told reporters, 'How can I feel like a hero when 250 of my buddies hit the island with me and only 27 of us walked off alive?' So, you take your class at school. Two-hundred and fifty of you spending a year together, having fun, doing everything together. Then all 250 of you hit the beach, but only 27 of your classmates walk off alive. That was Ira Hayes. He had images of horror in his mind. Ira Hayes died dead drunk, face down at the age of 32, ten years after this picture was taken."

"The next guy, going around the statue, is Franklin Sousley from Hilltop, Kentucky. A fun-lovin' hillbilly boy. His best friend, who is now 70, told me, 'Yeah, you know, we took two cows up on the porch of the Hilltop General Store. Then we strung wire across the stairs so the cows couldn't get down. Then we fed them Epsom salts. Those cows crapped all night.' Yes, he was a fun-lovin' hillbilly boy. Franklin died on Iwo Jima at the age of 19. When the telegram came to tell his mother that he was dead, it went to the Hilltop General Store.

A barefoot boy ran that telegram up to his mother's farm. The neighbors could hear her scream all night and into the morning. The neighbors lived a quarter of a mile away."

"The next guy, as we continue to go around the statue, is my dad, John Bradley from Antigo, Wisconsin, where I was raised. My dad lived until 1994, but he would never give interviews. When Walter Cronkite's producers, or the New York Times would call, we were trained as little kids to say, 'No, I'm sorry, sir, my dad's not here. He is in Canada fishing. No, there is no phone there, sir. No, we don't know when he is coming back.' My dad never fished or even went to Canada. Usually, he was sitting right there at the table eating his Campbell's soup. But we had to tell the press that he was out fishing. He didn't want to talk to the press."

"You see, my dad didn't see himself as a hero. Everyone thinks these guys are heroes, 'cause they are in a photo and on a monument. My dad knew better. He was a medic. John Bradley from Wisconsin was a caregiver. In Iwo Jima, he probably held over 200 boys as they died. And when boys died in Iwo Jima, they writhed and screamed in pain."

"When I was a little boy, my third grade teacher told me that my dad was a hero. When I went home and told my dad that, he looked at me and said, 'I want you always to remember that the heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who did not come back. Did not come back.'"

"So, that's the story about six nice young boys. Three died on Iwo Jima, and three came back as national heroes. Overall, 7,000 boys died on Iwo Jima in the worst battle in the history of the Marine Corps. My voice is giving out, so I will end here. Thank you for your time."

Suddenly, the monument wasn't just a big old piece of metal with a flag sticking out of the top. It came to life before our eyes with the heartfelt words of a son who did indeed have a father who was a hero. Maybe not a hero for the reasons most people would believe, but a hero nonetheless.

Thank you, Bubble, this is a day to remember. I always felt so sad for the parents that had sons buried in foreign countries, sad for the traumatic memories that stayed in the minds of the ones that came home.

And this many many years later I have tears rolling down my face remembering my 17 year old brother that hopped on his bicycle to ride to Kansas City (80 miles away) after telling Mother that she hoped she would sign for him to join the Air Corp because he would lie about his age if he had to. He did make it home after being shot down on their 13th mission, landed on dry ground next to the Danube River & picked up by Germans to spend the last year of service in a POW camp. He could only talk about bits & pieces of that time but kept his promise made between best friend, the tail gunner that was blown apart when the plane went down, that if "either survived they would visit the other's family to tell them what happened. He did that. We never knew where the brother was in the Navy, he was a flag-man on a carrier.

At home, 20 miles from a SAC base, we had the dark shades at night & mother was a volunteer plane spotter on top of the Court House (tallest building in town). She was walking for her nightly duty when the messenger boy came past on his bike to deliver the notice Bob was missing in action. She just knew & turned around to follow back to the house, praying the whole way. Her hair went from brown to white in the next year. She sent Red Cross packages every week to both her boys but knew Bob wasn't really getting his. Every Sunday she would call the Red Cross to send 2 service boys over for dinner and hoped "some other mother would feed her boys".

So thank you, Bubble, for the memory. Not many left that clearly remember those days.

Good morning..

Another day of bang bang thump. The men came early and left when the heat got too much. They have one side left to do today, not sure if it all can be done before the heat bakes them or not. Dogs were worried about the sounds yesterday but I would think today would be easier on the dogs.

Jane, I put cookies and some Chelsea buns in the hidey hole. Made the buns yesterday for the men and gave some to the neighbour . He gave me a ride into town and back as our vehicle is still waiting to be fixed.

I hear crow calling, better go feed him..

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good Morning Everyfriend!

AMY, I'm having a cookie and a bun with my coffee for breakfast.  Then I'm off to the showers! Then a walk before it gets too hot.  I'm with the guys on the roof.  I don't walk after it gets too hot!

I wish everyfriend  a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

Good morning, another gray, foggy, sullen day with more high waters, some flooding, and lots of erosion, trees, and other items in the rivers. At least all the extra green pops against all that gray.

I can sleep in ,in the morning! :cheer: The roof is now shingled. No more banging and dogs looking up to see what is making that sound.

Another hot day here , I did get the watering done early and noticed the carrots peeking plus the garlic is polking throuh the ground! No sign of the beets or parsnips......yet.

We are in need of rain here, already I have used up 1/2 a rain barrel of water. I could use the well water but prefer the rain water.

The other day I brushed Babe and just let her fur stay on the ground, later on when I went out a swallow was heading into the birdhouse with a bunch as big as she is!  They will have a soft cozy nest.

Lloyd, is still missing.

Enjoy your evening..

We had Ali and the kids for late morning and early afternoon.  When the boys were getting ready for naps, she took them home and left Emma here with us.  We had a fun afternoon and then took her home in time to meet her Daddy coming home from work and the boys getting up from naps!  Busy but FUN!

While Emma was here, we took a walk, played some games, did some coloring, read some books and played in the yard.  We also played some board games.  It was a BUSY day!  I loved every minute of it!

Jim did dinner for the ladies tonight and it was good!  He's a pretty good cook.  Now I'm ready to collapse!  When I finish here, I'm checking out a couple other things on the computer and then heading for the haystack!

AMY, good for you getting the roof finished.  I bet you and the doggies are glad all that banging around is over!  Sounds like your garden is coming along!

PATRICIA, it doesn't sound like Spring in Alaska is so pleasant!  Sounds like lots of people might have problems!  I hope it's over soon@

I hope LLOYD is doing OK!

I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy tomorrow.  God Bless!

Good afternoon from a still sodden Interior. This reminds me of 1967, before the dams and the flood control project. The rivers are running higher than they've been in years. They keep pushing the end date further and further back. The Chena has spilled over into the Sacha, and the rains continue.

"Special Weather Statement issued May 30 at 2:40PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks

...Rapid River Rises for Eastern Interior Rivers Into Friday ...

Moderate to heavy rain showers will continue across parts of the Interior through Wednesday evening. Periods of rain will result in an area of 0.5 to 1.25 inches of additional accumulations in the Fortymile Uplands and Salcha/Goodpaster/Chena River Basins through Wednesday evening.

This rain will likely cause a rapid rise in river and stream levels across the Southeast Interior. This includes the Chena, Chatanika, Goodpaster, and the Fortymile Rivers. A flood watch has been issued for the Salcha River, see the associated flood watch for more details regarding the Salcha River. The other rivers are not expected to flood. People along rivers and streams should prepare for elevated water levels through this week. River access points and gravel bars will likely be covered with water along with increased debris in rivers."

""FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR THE SALCHA RIVER FROM 10 PM AKDT THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING
What
Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
Where
The Salcha River.
When
From 10 PM AKDT this evening through Thursday evening.
Impacts
Excessive rainfall runoff may flood low lying areas on the Salcha River which could cause water to encroach onto property and around prone cabins. Expect increased debris in the river and possible increased erosion. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Heavy rainfall over the Salcha River Basin have already caused rapid rises along the Salcha River with additional rainfall over the next 36 hours expected to push the Salcha River to possible minor flood stage starting at the Upper River Wednesday with the crest reaching the Richardson Highway Bridge Thursday night."

Good morning..

Another scorcher today ,I think the central air will get a run today.

Folks are coming to pick up a trug this morning and then that is all that is scheduled. Sewing comes to mind for later, after I put the ribs on to slow cook.

I hear crow scolding me, have yet to put his food out. Better go do it.

Enjoy your day and stay safe.

Good morning Everyfriend!  I was greeted in my bedroom this morning by two very friendly doggies!  All I have to do is open my door in the morning and I have company!  It opens so quietly that it makes me wonder how they hear me all the way downstairs!

Don't know what's on the agenda for today except that Jim was up and out early today to go water flowers for Ali.  He's not back yet.

There are a couple of bananas that need to be used and I'm thinking of making some goodies for the doggies after I get dressed.  Don't know if that fits in or not but I guess I'll find out!  I've had my breakfast and checked out the computer stuff so next is back upstairs to get dressed and take a walk on the treadmill.  I'm going to miss the treadmill when I go home.  It'll be back to walking outside.

I wish you all a good day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow!

It's hushed in here this morning and on the site generally.

We're under a flood watch, but the skies have returned to partly cloudy, and that horrid gray fog has gone away. Whether we'll warm up is debatable, as possible rain showers are expected through Friday.

Sounds like everyone has a fairly nice Memorial Day. It was fairly quiet here. I heard a few fireworks go off in the distance, but they didn't last as long as usual. Shan barely registered the noise. He didn't head for the basement stairs, just looked at me a few seconds and went back to napping.

My cold has finally, finally subsided. The lawn is starting to look like some of it could use a trim, but I am holding off. We have had dry, breezy weather the past week. It looks like we won't get any rain at least until Saturday. Won't do the grass any good to mow it while it is so dry. We have an air quality alert for today and tomorrow. That explains why my nose has been itchy since yesterday.

Today I took a tiny step towards looking for an apartment and called the two most top ones on my list. The closest one to me has a three-month waiting time and a load of people on the waiting list. No problem, I am not in a super hurry just yet. I want to get a feel for what is out there. Sue and I are planning to do lunch and visit the other one sometime next week. This particular complex I lived in for a year or so back in the early 70's when they were new. The management company has been the same all this time and has kept the property up. I look forward to seeing the upgrades and remodeling they have done.

Hi, Patricia. I just saw your post. Sorry you are stuck with all that rain. I, on the other hand, have been enjoying an unusually long period of low humidity, except for all the pollen and such in the air right now.

All of you southeasterners are hogging all that sunshine, Joanne. I offered to go out on my balcony and huff and puff and then some more to send all this rain southeast to Amy. I'll try to swivel a bit and attempt to blow some your way.

Hello PATRICIA and MARSGAL.  And hello to anyone else who shows up.  It's quiet in here today!

MARSGAL, good luck with your search for a new living arrangement.  I hope you find the perfect place.

PATRICIA, I wish you some warm weather very soon!

We had the two older kids late morning and early afternoon while Ali took Cam for his 4 month checkup!  They were good and we had fun and lunch together!  EMMA is such a busy little girl! She's always doing something that teaches her new things!  I love watching and helping her!  Mikey is just a busy little beaver.  I don't think he knows how to sit still unless he's asleep!

Time to be thinking about supper!  Enjoy the rest of your day!
