Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Rick - So glad you are out of the hospital. Nothing like being home!

Callie - So sorry to hear about Mandi. Sending prayers her way! And prayers for her family, too.

Marilyne - Thanks for keeping us posted on Jean. I know what you mean by being in the doldrums. I have a lot of that along with not feeling well, which is probably why you don't see me very often.  :( I have good intentions nearly every day!  :)

To be honest, the best parts of my day are when I get pictures and videos of the great-grandbabies. Also the frequent phone calls and texts from my kids and time with Donna.

MarsGal - Hope your kitchen renovation is nearly over. My daughter, Lisa, has two Bengal cats. She's been very worried about Ziva, the oldest one. Ziva has been sick and lost a lot of weight. The diagnosis is Hyperthyroidism. She'll be spending a week in the vet hospital having radiation treatments. The vet said the chance of cure is 90+%. They've consented to this because otherwise Ziva has been healthy.

Jackie - I love your latest haircut!

I know I've missed mentioning some people but I will be back.

Beverly

Hi MaryPage! Hope you are staying cool through this heat wave.

...cherish your 100th Birthday card from our Queen Elizabeth... :) how lovely to have received a card from her...Happy to hear of how your Special day went with your family and carers...Yes i sent two cards, the one posted here, and the other a Jacquie lawson with a crown, thought that was appropriate for your day..

junee

Jackie, I will cherish my Birthday card because time does not stand still. My Great Grand daughter asked for my Birth certificate and attended to writing to House of Windsor. A beautiful photo was enclosed with the greeting.  I wrote when Her Majesty had been on the throne for 60 years, and at that time she had a place on wifi.  Also a lovely photo.  My day was extraordinary on the 10th . :smitten:  :smitten:

junee

Beverley, pleased to see you here, and hope you see my message.   Know you have not been well and guess I am also one of those trying to keep out of the doldrums.  Had Coven, lots injections and dodging the flu , so far.
Keep well 🥰.      Went to see your photos recently.

Vanilla-Jackie

Junee..
..so happy seeing your recent postings, even if we are miles away, and at varying time zones.. :)

MarsGal

Beverly, I don't remember the vet saying anything about radiation treatment or surgery for Lucy. I don't even know if anyone around here does that. Years ago, people around here had to take their critters to Philly or to Johns Hopkins for big guns treatments. There is a place in Lancaster, that does surgery for nose/sinus problems though. I just looked them up. They list thyroidectomy and hyperparathyroidism in their list of soft-tissue specialties. Well! I knew about them from looking into a problem Oscar has but couldn't afford at the time the expense of the more detailed X-rays and then a trip to Lancaster with a seven to ten day stay as well as the surgery. I didn't even think about them for Lucy's thyroid. Now that truly sucks!!!

Junee, Happy Belated Birthday!

The kitchen should have been getting the finishing touches today. However, the counter guy miss-measured something and had to take the countertop back to redo. He is supposedly coming this morning to put it in. That means the guys won't be back until Monday to put in the dishwasher, garbage disposer and do the final little touches.

The next house project will be the basement. I now have water coming in which we think is caused by the downspout which is situated at about the same spot. So, downspout fix at least. The back door and the two casement windows are going to be replaced and I want a new, deeper basin/tub and a faucet fixture. I am also thinking about removing the carpet in the living room and media room and either renovating the wood underneath or putting down vinyl plank flooring. I think that will depend on the pricing, but I suspect doing the vinyl will be less expensive, faster and less stressful than having the original wood flooring sanded and restained. Of course, I could just have the carpet very, very thoroughly cleaned.

MaryPage

Beverly, you could be describing me and the little things that most matter to me these days, and bring me happiness.  The children and their children and their children.

I cannot BELIEVE my children range from almost 76 (September 7) to 58.  We keep in close touch on a daily basis.

The older granddaughters are preparing to become grandmothers themselves, while the youngest of the thirteen (13!) is 35 already!  Where does the time go?  They are, of course, full on into the busiest time of their entire lives, but they are very good about sending me photos regularly for the moving picture frame with its very own email address that hangs on my living room wall.  They can even put captions on these photos.  One, Kathryn, the next to youngest, takes me to some of my medical appointments and stands by to do anything she can for me.  Kathryn has two small daughters and an extremely demanding job that pays her pots of money.  Those graduate degrees Have paid off, in our family.

I do not do Facebook.  Never have done any Social Media except this group.  So we keep in touch by telephone, visits, and email.

The stories that pour in about the great grands are the joyful sunbeams juicing up my passing days.  My oldest is Emily, who is 29!  The youngest is Cleo, 9 months.  I find each the most amazing person EVer, and soak up every drop of every story about them told to me.  I guess Miles, who is 7 now, takes the cake every time when it comes to the stories.  He is the one who asked his grandmother, my daughter Anne, to furnish him with a piece of material he could use to make a parachute.  "Why do you want to make a parachute, Miles?"  Because today I am going to learn to fly, and I need a parachute in case I do it wrong.  "What is the plan, Miles?"  I am going to jump out of a window in the room over the garage.

It takes a lot of effort to keep up with that young man.  The others have to sweat it;  me, I just enjoy the laughs.

Sandy

Hi Everone!   Good to see so many posting today.
Happy   100th Birthday Junee!!

weather here in Maine is warm but not
too hot and humid,  yet.  But still August
so more hot and humid yet to come.

Funny story.   I had to get some information about
my retire ment account and come to find out,
they listed me at DEAD...  but the checks kept
coming in just the same.     So when they sent me
the information that I had requested,  it showed that they
were paying me 0 amount.

So back I get on the phone and they are looking into
the problem...     They are very nice and will rectify
this problem asap.  Since today is Friday, it will
probably be next week ...

So glad most people are feeing better
and things are going well.

Beverly I know how difficult life is
for you now with out Chape.    I am
glad that some of your family is close
by still.    I do hope that you get to fell
healthier soon.

As the old saying goes,  "getting old is not
of sissies"  ..

I too am grateful for still being here ..
even if my  meager retirement lists me as deceased!!!

lol

Have a bettter day,  everyone!!

Sandy

Sandy...
... i was just going to say, how does it feel knowing you are still alive and kicking... How on earth can any authority make such a mistake as showing you are dead?

MaryPage

Unfortunately, I have heard of it more than just a few times in my long life.  Fortunately, it has never happened to me, personally.  I believe Social Security and most, if not all, government offices require more than just someone's word of mouth before they will list a retiree as dead.  I seem to recall that I had to provide Death Certificates. and  certified copies of those only, for each family member I've ever had to report as deceased.  One of the worst case scenarios I have encountered had nothing to do with retirement checks, but with voter lists.  Seems they are not as particular, in some places, as they should be about marking folk as dead.

MaryPage

One possibility, of course, is that a clerk is given the task of marking a legitimate list of deceased as dead, and they check off a name just before or after the name they meant to remove.

Marilyne

How nice it is, to look into Bait and Tackle and see so many messages.  I love it when it's busy in this discussion!

Junee - So glad you found your way back here!   Turning 100, is a great accomplishment, and the birthday greeting card from Queen Elizabeth, was probably your favorite gift?    I hope you'll return  often, and keep us posted on everything that's happening in Australia!   I also think often about Dorothy/Chia, our friend from Massachusetts.  She was a special person, with a wonderful sense of humor!

Mary Page - You have a few years yet before you hit the big 100, but I'll be rooting for you to make it!  You have a lot of determination, and that will help you reach your lofty goal.  I love hearing about all of your great grandchildren.  Tell us more about Miles . . . he sounds like he's full of personality.

Beverly - Good to see you checking in!  Sorry your still have the breathing difficulties, but from what you've said, that is a problem that unfortunately,  is not going to go away.   I'm looking forward to seeing more photos of the twins, as well as that handsome redhead!

Sandy - that's so funny, that you were listed in SS, as deceased, but your checks were still continuing to arrive!  ::)   Reminds me of the famous quote from Mark Twain, when a newspaper reported that he had died, when he was still alive   . . . "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated".

I'm running out of steam here, so will just say "Hello", to Jackie and MarsGal, and anyone else I missed?  :hello:

Sandy

This was not my social security that
had me listed as deceased,  but
on the small pention that I get
from working at Tropicana  in Florida.

I would be very concerned if it were
Social Security!!     The pension place is
taking care of it.

Thankfully,  I am still kicking!

MaryPage - Your story about Miles gave me my laugh of the day! I can see that he will be a challenge for the next few years. Years ago, a 7 year old in the Sunday School class I was teaching, climbed snowbanks to the roof of the garage and all decked out in his Superman cape, jumped off the roof to the frozen driveway (it was winter with lots of snow and ice). He spent at least a month in the hospital!

My son never tried anything like that, but thanks to his Dad he was flying hang-gliders by the age of 14.  ::)

Sandy - I have heard of people waking up to see their own obituaries in the paper! It had to be un-nerving to see you declared as deceased!

Junee - You've had some bad times recently. Hope you are feeling better and can dodge the flu. Thanks for looking at my pictures. I'll be posting some of the great-grands soon.

MarsGal - So sorry your kitties have had so much illness. Is  hyperthyoidism contagious in cats? I know that my daughter is keeping her two separated but I think it's so the other one can't lick a surgical area. This is costing them a lot of money. I wouldn't be able to do it!

Marilyne - The upside is my general health is good so some days are better than others. I just got a good report from my cardiologist. My biggest problem is extreme fatigue. Have you been able to get out and see people or go for lunch? That sometimes helps with the doldrums.

Donna brought me some groceries earlier and stayed to visit till nearly 9:00 so I'm just finishing what I wrote before. Have a good night all.

MARSGAL hope all goes well with those renovations.  Knew you years ago, .. have forgotten your avatar in Seniors Learn.  I used to enjoy the reading of books then.  Keep well, I saw your message, Thank you, it has been an extraordinary week of messages received.
MARY PAGE you will make it, just keep well.
SANDY hope they have managed to sort your problems.
BEVERLEY, Do hope you are feeling better.
JACKIE, Have to mention you and hope the weather is being kinder over there.
MARILYN. I have lost some of my 'know how' but persevere.  I have a wall hanging of Humming Birds on my wall that used to be on Chia's wall.  Her Dil
Sent it to me, and so think of her often.  We do not have Humming birds in Australia but chia and I discussed them at one time.  Her history was so interesting.  I am quietly sitting in my chair, as a wheel fell off my walker and now waiting for handy-man to fix, fortunately I fell to the end of bed when this happened.  All part of the fun in Aged Care.  Enough. Hello to all .

MarsGal

Junee, thank you for remembering me. Sadly, the Senior Learn group is so much diminished now that we usually only post in the Library discussion group or the Books into Movies group. No more month-long discussions on any one book.

Almost there: Finishing touches on the kitchen should be Monday. Can't wait. I discovered the countertop guy grew up in the same area I did, but 20 years behind me. He remembers many of the now gone businesses, and families from the area, but not so much the people I knew but their kids. It was a real delight to talk to him.

MaryPage

i am just so impressed with Junee.  She makes me determined to keep on keeping on.

Absolutely perfect weather here on the Chesapeake.  Clear, sunny, temps in the high seventies.  Heaven cannot possibly beat this combination. so I think I'll hang out right here.  With the high temps and humidity moved off, Chip & I took a lovely walk around the neighborhood yesterday evening.  We relished sitting on "our bench" at the Marina entrance and watching the boats coming and going.  We think Baltimore must be finally catching up with unloading the cargo ships, because we could only count three laying by waiting to be called up there because a slip is available.  Three is a very small number for any time in any year.  I love seeing every sort and kind of watercraft out there, but the white sails scattered across the blue waters are what make my heart sing.  They were having a regatta over off Kent Island clear across the bay, and that is always fun to watch.  Life is Good.  May it just roll on in this way for each and all of us!

Mary Page - I agree with you 100%, that  Junee  is an inspiration to us all!

Looks like you're having a lovely weekend, watching the boats coming and going on the Chesapeake Bay.  Wish I could join you.  Nothing I like more than being near the ocean, or the bay, on a beautiful Summer day, enjoying the salt water breeze!

MarsGal - I hope you have your camera or cell phone ready to take some pictures of the new kitchen?  From your descriptions, I have my own visual idea of what it looks like.  I'm  looking forward to seeing if I was anywhere near close?  :D

An afternoon greeting also going out to Jackie, Junee, Beverly, Callie, Rick, Sandy and Jenny!  Hope everyone is having a calm and quiet Summer weekend?

MaryPage

I am told that the Chesapeake Bay, down South where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean off of Virginia, has salt water; but it only has fresh water up here in Maryland and further North.  I have no idea how this works, but this is what I am told.

MaryPage

You can Google it and possibly understand what is going on.

"Salinity. The Bay receives about half its water volume from the Atlantic Ocean in the form of saltwater. The other half is freshwater that drains into the Bay from its enormous watershed. Salinity is the primary physical and ecological variable that changes through the length of the Bay."

Beverly

I'm wondering if my post from last night was seen. I've noticed that when I post late at night it doesn't seem to show up the next day. Here goes another late night post!  :)

MaryPage

Beverly, there is a post from you yesterday at close to eleven P.M.  Maybe you have not looked back far enough for it.  But it IS here!

MaryPage

Tonight it occurred to me that I want to tell y'all something, at the same time apologizing if you already know it or have no interest.

Some years ago I tuned in a new show called Chesapeake Shores.  I found it good, but could not figure out where in the world that part of the Chesapeake might be.  Wrong vegetation, wrong way the sun was reflected, wrong color waters, wrong everything.  Then I Googled it and found out it was filmed in Vancover, Canada.  I tell you what: There Ought To Be A Law!

So forgive me, but the very last show is on tonight.  I have been giving it a partial attention.  Having not seen it for some years now, I do not recognize half of the actors.  And it is still not filmed on MY Chesapeake Shores.  Forgive me, but there are some things a gal feels she must make sure folk are straight about!!!

MaryPage - Kind of like when the movie White Christmas came out and it was portrayed as being in Vermont! ???

Then there was "The Trouble With Harry" with Shirley McClain which  actually was filmed in Vermont.

MaryPage

Well precisely!

Oh, I loved both of those movies!  Think I'd like to laugh myself silly over The Trouble With Harry once more before I cash in me chips.  And as for Bing Crosby, as far as I'm concerned, White Christmas was always his Christmas song.  Always was.  Always will be.  I expect we each and every one of us feel anchored back there in the world as it was when we were very young.

CallieOK

Then there's "True Grit" whch was filmed in Durango, Colorado although story took place on either side of the Arkansas/Oklahoma border. Show me a grove of aspen trees in that area and I'll buy you dinner at a fancy restaurant  :

MaryPage,  I watched the series of Chesapeake Shores and wondered where it had been filmed.. Have also read the books.  Some characters didn't fit, either.
Ive learned that when the show credits say " based on" a book...it may not be anything similar.

MaryPage

That's right, Callie.  I have felt real heartbreak over what the script writers present as their take on the book.

Again, my biggest sorrow dives back into my childhood.  While there were many traumas in those years, World War II being the cause of most of those, I always found my greatest happiness losing myself in books.  My top favorites, and these have never been moved from their number one spot in my heart, were the Anne of Green Gables series.  Thus I have been downright heartbroken over the series written for Netflix.  I loved the actress playing Anne, but found little in the script that actually delivered the characters I hold in my heart.  There were eight books in all, but I do not believe today's generations are acquainted with them.  I particularly loved "RAINBOW VALLEY".  i believe Canadian girls still have access to and read those wonderful books.
