MaryPage, it must be everywhere as this is a small city of 100,000, yet we have two specialty ice cream shops, a coffee shop with espresso beans that started with expresso flavored ice creams before they branched out.

And during the summer, at the two farmer's markets as well as the import-export shop. Of course, we have a sizeable immigrant population, so every yearly friendship day, in August, we have a food and exhibit hall at Alaskaland's Pioneer Park. Gelato, ice cream, sherbert, whatever you call it is everywhere here, so I'm sure elsewhere too.

I wouldn't say who's brand tasted better as I've only had the local ones, but I will say, the Vietnamese ice cream is seriously addictive!

Several sources believe that  Alaska is actually the state that consumes the most ice cream per capita. With all of our frozen dairy-based desserts, were you stunned? Texas is surprisingly ranked last.

Mary Page..
...ahh now i have the picture...as a young child a Neapolitan block was a luxury my father bought, it consisted of three plain layers...chocolate-strawberry-vanilla ice cream...i would often cut my portion and place it in-between two thin wafers...

...Where are Beverly and Joy....hope they make a posting some time soon, i am aware Joy is dealing with her depression...

Shirley

Jackie, Neapolitan is still my fav ice cream because if the mood changes I can pick the flavor for the day. I've been buying the little cones to scoop just enough ice cream in & not feel guilty for indulging!

I am surprised about the fact ice cream is such a fav in Alaska, Patricia. Have you ever made the "fake" ice cream from snow?  Not sure but I think my brothers just added vanilla & maybe a tad of milk?  Don't think it was something Mom put together, at the time I thought it was good. Maybe that was just a thing we did during WWII.

The trees are still right now, have the door open beside me & feels so good. Got into the 80s yesterday but I wasn't outside hardly at all. This house stays pretty much the same temp unless the outside is extremely hot or cold. Yesterday it was mid-80s by my thermometers but the AC didn't come on at all.... and is set about 70.

Better go eat my breakfast, cats fed & off for their naps. Have a blackbird walking on the pool cover to pick up any worms. I do NOT understand where the worms come from on the pool cover, there is at least 6' of concrete with the grass carpet on the side nearest the real grass. 31 years in this house & still a mystery to me.

Sandy

I love ice cream but my
favorite of all was the Gelato that I got
when traveling around Europe (Western and Eastern)
at that time,  back in the 80's ...

There is nothing so tasty and satisfying
as a few small scoops of gelato to top
of the day..

There! You know about gelato, Sandy Dapph!  You have lived a good, full life.

And Shirley, I love Spumoni the way you love Neapolitan. Same difference, only mine has brandy in the cherries. Now, you can Really top off the day with that. Woo hoo!

So here's to Spumoni, the SPIRITual desert!

CallieOK

Hadn't thought about Neapolitan ice cream in a long time,  Have never heard of the combination including brandied cherry flavor.  Sounds like a winner!!!

I agree about the European gelato, Sandy. Because I have to watch sugar intake, I didn't get to enjoy it as much as I would have liked on several trips over the years.

However, while on a tour of the Loire/Dordogne river areas of France, the group stopped for lunch at a small cafe.
I asked the waitress if they had "gelato sans sucre" (gelato without sugar).  She took me to a freezer case that had all kinds of fruit flavored gelato on sticks - like a popsicle. I chose cherry and it was deeee-licious.

My local dairy store (Braum's) has a good sugar-free vanilla ice cream that I enjoy.  Recently, I noticed they had added sugar-free "cookie dough" flavor and there's a carton in my freezer.  Finally "buried" it under some individual packages of meat so I won't be tempted too often.

Shirley, our weather has been heat on in the morning/air conditioner in the afternoon.  Crazy!!!!

Miss Emily coming for dinner.  I have chicken breasts in the slow cooker to be turned into a chicken/StoveTop stuffing casserole.  Off to figure out go-withs - maybe some of that cookie dough ice cream for dessert.

Wishing Everyfriend Everywhere an Enjoyable Day.

MaryPage

Ohhhh, Callie. Would sure love to join you and Miss Emily.

I have an Emily, too. She is my great granddaughter, and is 27 now. She is an architect, and works and lives in Springfield, Missouri.  She was raised in Kansas City. Emily can construct Anything, I swear! I do not understand the mental aspects of such a gift, and yearn to have been blessed with it.

My favorite thing in all this world is a soft cotton throw Our Emily crocheted for me. It is white with many shades of blue, my favorite color combination, and has a large sailboat as the design. I quite simply adore it. And it feels good. I am quite allergic to wool.

Good morning MaryPage and all!

MaryPage, I saved your recipe!

Shirley, we did make snow ice cream during the fifties but they say there is too much pollution to try it nowadays. I wonder if your worms traveled somehow from nearby trees?

I always loved ice cream but I now have to be careful to eat it in small amounts as dairy no longer agrees with me.

Mother Nature has turned her back on us again, just after we were getting into the low seventies.  :-\

".Cold Temperatures Thursday night through Saturday...

Low temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to mid 30s for much of the Interior Thursday night, and then again on Friday night.

A cold front will move south through the Interior Thursday with cold temperatures settling into the Interior Thursday night through Saturday. Low temperatures will fall into the lower 30s in the Fairbanks area and around 30 in North Pole with even colder temperatures in the normal cold spots in the valley. Low temperatures in Delta Junction and Nenana will also fall to around freezing. High temperatures will only reach into the 50s Friday and Saturday but will be back in the 60s on Sunday.

Residents should prepare to move plants indoors if possible, or cover them, to protect them from the cold."

CallieOK

MaryPage,  dinner will be about 6:15. "Go-with" will be carrots glazed with honey and cinnamon.  You are more than welcome.

My Emily is the second of my three grandchildren (who are siblings) and will be 27 in September.  She received her Doctorate of Chiropractic degree last December and is currently practicing in a suburban clinic of OKC.

She's also currently living with her parents in Yukon.  Didn't I see you mention a "great...." who lives there?

Her mother is an expert quilter - particularly "tee shirt" quilts on which she uses the front - and sometimes the back - of tee shirt "collections" individuals have gathered.  Since I've never been a tee shirt collector, I have yet to receive one.  ;)

Remember some of the words in an old Rock & Roll song: "Get out in the kitchen and rattle those pots and pans"?  I did that yesterday only with bowls and such, take a guess...made the Banana Bread again.  Had those "getting too brown bananas, and said, "no waste".  Whipped up one loaf, and yesterday afternoon, and this morning, I am going bananas! ;) Have had two slices with coffee already.  May have to hide it in the refrigerator, so I won't eat it all in two days.

I have bought a couple of containers of Gelato over the last year...last one was Mint/Chocolate Cookie (like an oreo).  Pretty good!  I can't remember the flavor of the first one I bought, so it must have been mediocre to say the least.  I'm really not a great ice cream fan, but Tillamook Oregon Dark Cherry is a winner.  It is a very seasonal flavor, and hard to find, but when the store puts some out, I get a carton.  I have been known to put a scoop of it in my morning Smoothie!

Didn't make anything new and special for supper, but defrosted a container of the chicken soup I made awhile back.  Trying to clean out the freezer of all the containers of left-overs. (I guess to make room for more, LOL) I found a recipe for "So-Sweet Squash Pickles" and plan on putting that together.  Yellow squash and/or zucchini.  It calls for some celery seed, which I don't have, but will try to pick some up at the store today.  I keep thinking I have ALL the spices and condiments I need to cook "anything", but--you got it---I always run short of one item.  I don't think my pantry will hold many more bottles, jars, etc.  Also, ran out of vanilla extract yesterday.

Need to get busy, have one load of laundry to do and the living room could use another vaccuming.  Sun is out, almost 80 degrees at 11:32 AM.  Have turned up the ceiling fan.  I'm really stingy when it comes to running the A.C.

Have a lovely productive day everyone!  If I don't voice it, please know that I am thinking good thoughts for all my cyber-buddies here.

Granddaughter Kathryn picked Ava up early from St. Anne's and came here and parked her car & brought Ava up so the two of them could freshen up here.  Debi & Steve brought their larger boat over and tied up at our Chesapeake Harbour Marina, and Debi came here and fetched Kathryn & Ava. So they are off to find a good spot to watch the Blue Angels. You would think me a Great Liar if I were to tell you how long the flotilla has been gathering this morning and, now, afternoon; or how many there are.  I can see hundreds upon hundreds of little boats rushing from north and south, as though in a race with one another, which they are, and their white wakes showing how swiftly they are plowing along.  It reminds me of years gone by when I joined the family for this, but I am too faded and jaded now. Glad to stay behind.

The number of little boats reminds me of a time that brought tears to my eyes. The mere mention of it still makes me want to sob.  I refer to the relief of Dunkirk. The newsreels at the time did it justice, but no movie made since has come anywhere close. All those little boats setting out from England and Scotland and Wales and pouring into the English Channel and over to Dunkirk to rescue the British Expeditionary Force. And rescue them they did! Over THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND. Golly, gee whiz! The big ships sent for them could not get close enough to the beaches, you see. Churchill was beside himself. No Army, if they were lost to the Germans, who were closing in on them.  No army, and the war was lost right then and there. Then he thought of his seacoast countrymen, and he put out a secret call.  And they came. Fathers and sons, grandfathers and grandsons.  Some in boats that could only pick up a very few at at time. But they got 'em.  They got 'em all.  They went down to their graves in those waters, and they worked without stopping for days.

Our newsreels did a great job of telling us about it when it was just over, but no movie has done it justice since. I think the younger generations of today think the drama of it all is just too great to be true.

But it was.  It was true.  I remember.

Thank you, Miss Callie!  I'll bring flowers and a humongous appetite.  Dying to meet your Miss Emily!

My granddaughter Melissa, she of the exploding birthday cupcake gift, is the daughter of my daughter Anne.  I have eight (8) children, and six live in this general area. The other two come at least once a year; usually more often. Six of them have children and grandchildren. I don't expect ANY of you to keep track.

MaryPage

I did not mean to put that, what do you call them?  Moji?  in there.  I meant to put the number 8 in brackets. Oh well.  Live & learn. I am not fond of Mojis. I do not use them.

Joanne/Tome  -  I don't remember the song, "Get out in the kitchen and rattle those pots and pans", but I do remember one from the War years - "Milkman, Keep Those Bottles Quiet"!    Anyway, glad to see you are being a productive cook!  Banana bread is a favorite of mine but I haven't made it in many years.    Speaking of ice cream, and bread or cake - I recall last year at this time, when we all made ice cream cake. It was pretty good, and simple enough, even for me!  (the reluctant cook).    Oh yes, I do love Tillamook Oregon Ice cream!  I haven't seen the cherry flavor here?  I've only had the vanilla, which is smooth and delicious.

Mary Page  -  Sounds like you have an exciting day ahead,  watching the flotilla, with the Blue Angels overhead!  Does this celebration last the entire weekend, or only for today?
I'm setting out on a crusade the next couple of days, to find some gelato to enjoy.  I know it's available at a little ice cream counter, inside one of our larger,  Whole Foods Markets.  I've seen it every time I've shopped there, but seems I'm always in a hurry, and never stopped to buy any.  Other than that, I don't know of any other places to buy gelato or maybe spumoni, but I'm  sure there are many many others here, in Silicon Valley.

Callie  -  Please include me in your dinner party!  I'd love to meet Mary Page, and your granddaughter Emily,  plus I love any food prepared in the slow cooker!   Your weather sounds exactly like mine.  So cold in the morning that I have to turn on the heat for comfort.  Then the the outside temperature rises in the afternoon, and by dinnertime, the AC is a must!

Hello to Shirley,  Sandy, Patricia   and  Jackie,  and hoping we hear from  Jean and Jenny today?    Also it's been a long time since JeanneP has posted a message?

CallieOK

As some "down-home" restaurants advertise,  'Kallie's Kitchen" will serve buffet-style and will be open until food runs out or owner gets too sleepy to continue.

MaryPage

Watch out, all ye at Callie's this evening; slow cooker is my favorite, as well and all. And I am Very Greedy!

Marilyne, this is Commissioning Week here at the Naval Academy.  It means the class of 2021, over a thousand of them, graduates at the end of this week: on Friday.  They have sent the other classes home, and the new plebes have not arrived as yet.

So this week is all about the First Year Midshipment becoming lieutenants.  I think it is lieutenants. I am an Army Brat myself, and am not sure.

At all of the military academies, fourth yearmen are the new plebes, and third are Sophomores, and second are in their third year, and Firsts and the ones who are in their last year and will graduate.   If they're diligent.

So they have all sorts of traditional events each day and night all week long.  The Blue Angels come and give a heart stopping performance on Wednesday of Commissioning Week always. Forever and Ever, Amen.  And they visit and practice on the Tuesday. And it feels as though the whole wide world comes to see them.

Tomorrow, Thursday, will be full of I forget what.  I'll read all about it in our local newspaper.  Friday will be the big day.  Mothers will cry and fathers will try not to tear up, but most will. The new officers already know where they will go; their assignments are given out a few weeks back.  Each Middie turns in a list of three placements they would most prefer.  According to rank in the class, the top ones will get exactly what they want, but the further down you go, the less likely that will be true.  The lists are tacked to the bulletin board in Bancroft Hall, and the newspapeer covers the event with names, placements, and pictures.

The Blue Angels will do a single fly over within one second of when it becomes time for them to do that.  How do they do it? Beats me! But I can see them coming and can hear them accomplish their feat.

Then everyone will go home, except for those getting married in the Chapel. That will start after graduation and continue through the weekend. One right after the other.  They come out under the swords of their fellow classmen.

The graduation speech will come from the Vice President this year. It is swapped around among the academies.  One year the President here, then the VP, then the Secretary of Defense.  West Point and the Air Force will get one each of the other two this year./size]

Denver

Time to check in to see what you all have been up to🤔🤔

Loved all of your discussion about Fleet Week, MARYPAGE. Today was graduation day at the Air Force Academy. The Thunderbirds have been flying all around the area the past few days. It is always a thrill to watch them‼️

Enjoyed reading all the comments about Gelato.  I was first introduced to Gelato when we lived temporary in Italy in 1969. It wasvery popular there at that time and we sure enjoyed it.

I have not had Spumonti in many years, but I remember it well and how yummy it is.  Same with Neapolitan Ice Cream.

CALLIE, I hope your visit with Miss Emily was enjoyed by both of you💞💞

JACKIE, so relieved that your breast issue is not cancer🙏🙏. I am very excited about your new home.  It is going to be so nice for you to have a back door where you can go out and sit to enjoy yourself.

Falling asleep....must post this before I loose it.

Sweet dreams.

Jenny  - good to see your message last night before bed time.  You didn't mention Michele, so I'm hoping that's a good sign - that she is doing as well as can be expected, after such a long ordeal?  She is always on the back of my mind, with healing thoughts and prayers.

Mary Page  - I can imagine that you are  continuing to enjoy this busy Annapolis weekend . . .  even if it's only as an observer from your balcony/deck  It sounds like  an  excellent vantage point, to catch a glimpse of boat parades and sailboat races  throughout the entire weekend?
I've been meaning to tell you that I agree with you, regarding your feelings about  Dunkirk  -  the recent movie, with that title.  It didn't even began to do justice to the actual event.  I disliked it intensely.  The best depiction so far, was a prolonged scene in the movie,  Atonement,  which came out in around 2010 I think?  If you've never seen it, it's worth watching.

Callie  - sorry I didn't make it last night for dinner, but "I can dream, can't I"?  ( the title of an old pop song from the 1940's, I think?)  Would be so nice to meet you, and Mary Page, Patricia, Jenny, and everyone else here in Bait and Tackle - but only in my dreams I'm afraid.
Look for a message from me in Library~Bookshelf about,  The Four Winds.  Definitely Mixed feelings about it.

Patricia  - I'm hoping the predictions about your upcoming cold front, did not come to pass?  Every once in a while, the weather people get it wrong- especially in the Spring, and I hope this was one of those times.   You deserve a true warm spell!

A good Thursday HELLO to all.

My visit to the surgeon went very well.  No more arm sling and many more movements of my arm. So my PT worked me over good😫😘. Over all I am pretty miserable, but that is to be expected 😩😩

Tomorrow is Dave and Michele's 27th wedding anniversary.  She had a oncology appointment today and 2 more appointments tomorrow.  It is so hard for her to get ready, get in the wheelchair and then into the car.  She is so weak and weary😩😩 We are all so very 💔 for her😩

MARILYN, sadly Michele is not doing well at all, so there just was not much to say😩😞

I wish you all a good rest of your day.

Came off my landline phone after a call and took a heavy fall...I had to turn myself over, crawl to something solid to grab hold of to pull myself up from the front, my MS body being like jelly, shaking and legs buckling under me..Only have a sore, possibly bruised backside, could have been a whole lot worse as i was going down on my side i was sure this time i was going to brake something...Been on the phone to another charity who told by another that they would be the one who could put a call safe in my new home if i was to have falls, also maybe a fixed secure shower grab bar and key safe attached outside the brick bungalow that will allow emergency people to have a key for access if i take any falls when the doors are locked...but of course these things can take a couple of months once on their books...then of course this gets passed over to other charities and one gets confused with who is doing what, and told they will be in contact with me....

...I phoned ( before my fall ) my mid 80's friends hubby who answered the phone to ask if any improvement in his wife, i have phoned the past 3 days since daughter told me she has lost so much weight, doesn't want to talk to anybody, and she having to spoon feed, and hubby telling me just staring into space...Told no improvement and she has lost another half stone bringing her weight down to 6 stone in the last 2 or 3 days...We know she has given up...

patricia19

Jenny, I'm so sorry to hear this news and for Michele and her entire family. The 30th marks thirty years since I lost my daughter, and you carry them in your heart forever.

Marilyne

Jenny  -  sad to see that things are not looking good for Michele.  I will continue to hold hope in my heart, and pray for her,  for Dave, and their three children.

Patricia  -  so sorry that you have this sad 30 year anniversary facing you this week.  All we can do as time passes, is to reflect back on the good and happy times from the past.

Jackie  -  I hope you are feeling better today, and will continue to keep moving forward, in spite of your serious illness.

Beverly

I've tried to catch up on some of the posts. So glad to see you back MaryPage! I don't get on the computer much these days.

My chronic diseases are taking  their toll on me. I spend a  lot of time in the recliner or sleeping. Donna is living in Florida full time now. It's  a blessing to have her close by. Michael bought a small home here in The Villages for a vacation home but he's spent a lot of time here already. Jennifer loves it with access to several pools, etc. Lauri and Lisa were here for several days each. With Covid we hadn't seen each other for about two years. Since I last posted I've had two more hospital stays.

Two of my granddaughters, Brynn and Shea, (remember the sisters who went on the trip to Thailand with daughter, Lauri?) are expecting babies. Shea's is a boy, due in July. To everyone's delight, Brynn is expecting twins, a boy and a girl, in September.  I was brought to tears when she told me the girl will be named Beverly Grace.  :smitten:

Jenny - Sorry to hear Michele has had such an ordeal. I'm glad your arm is coming along well.

patricia19

Bev, I was both glad and sad to see your post. I've had you on my mind several times lately. Isn't this your family's second or third set of twins?

Beverly

Patricia - No, it's the first twins in our family. Brynn is 30 years old and has gone through a lot of problems trying to have a baby.

I'm sorry this is such a sad anniversary for you. I remember when you first told us about your daughter on SeniorNet.

Sandy

Hi Beverly ..So glad to see
you posting and also sorry to hear that you
are plagued by chronic illness that is debilitating ..

And you are going to have a grandchild
named after you..  That is so wonderful.

I wish you well ..
