Miss Saigon is my favourite..

Marilyne

Jackie - I've never seen "Miss Saigon", but have always wanted to.  It's my dil's favorite musical - she and my son have seen it twice in San Francisco, when it was on tour.   Son's favorite is,  "Phantom of the Opera".

Bubble - How could I forget to list "West Side Story", as one of my favorites!  I've seen lots of stage productions over the years, and of course the ORIGINAL movie!   That movie is wonderful, and available on DVD, as are most of the other musicals.  I didn't see the recent movie remake.   Not sure if "Porgy and Bess", is available on DVD or not?  Will have to do a search and find out.

CallieOK

It would be easier to mention the musicals I didn't like but they have been mentioned as favorites by others...so I won't.

I loved any musical with Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Donald O'Connor, Gene Nelson, Ann Miller, Vera-Ellen, Cyd Charisse and other "dancers who could sing" (as Miss Ellen puts it). I don't remember any of them being particularly good actors, however.
Also enjoyed almost any Rogers and Hammerstein musical.

Pretty sure I saw every movie musical that came to the theater in my small hometown in rural Oklahoma.  My mother and I came to Oklahoma City to see live musical productions - both "popular" and classical.

The remakes Marilyne mentioned do not sound like anything I'd be interested in - as do most of the new ones.

For DAYS I have intended to post something and today s the day that I am going to get er' done🤪🤪‼️‼️

I love each and every one of your posts.....so thank you ALL for keeping up this wonderful thread of ours❣️

I have some WONDERFUL and very exciting news to share.  I saw an orthopedic doctor last week that specializes in nerve damage.  He gave me news that I was sure I may never hear.  He sees enough life in my damaged actuary nerve that he is willing to go forth with a surgery that should give me "some" of my shoulder movement back so that I can at least get my arm away from my body....I was SO EXCITED to hear this.  There is no downside to this repair at all, and even if I only get a bit more movement it will be worth it!  He said he can also stabilize my reverse shoulder so it is less likely to be dislocated as easily.  A win win for me.  He takes a nerve from an area that has many nerves, so it is not like stealing from Peter to pay Paul‼️‼️. He hoped to be able to put me on his January schedule which would be the first Thursday in January.  🙏🙏🙏 this will be the day.  He not does this surgery the first Thursday of the month‼️‼️

JOANNE, my all time favorite musical is THE SOUND F MUSIC🥰🥰 I grew up in a musical family and cherish all the older musicals.

MARSGAL, we watched all of the FIFA matches as well and the World Cup yesterday was fantastic‼️. Possibly the best ⚽️ game I have EVER seen and one of my sons said "possibly one of the best sporting events EVER"‼️. I recorded BEAUTY and the BEAST, but have not watched it yet.

JACKIE, thank you for sharing the YouTube video.

MARILYN, good to read you two are doing well and enjoyed the visit from your daughter and granddaughter.  Are they the ones that moved to Palm Springs? My dad always said  "picture show" when referring to going to the movies!

Too many interruptions so I best get this posted before it gets away from me‼️

Have a great day 🎄🎄‼️

So, so, so thrilled about your news, Jenny!  Wowzer!

Today is Steph's birthday.  With my tattered state of a memory, I can remember her posts vividly, but not Where in SeniorNet she posted.  So I'll stick my neck out and send a Happy Birthday greeting to Steph, who is in assisted living now and still loves her corgis!

Marilyne

Big Earthquake this morning up on the North coast  of CA, between Eureka and Fortuna - 6.4 magnitude!  That area is about 320 miles north of were I live.  I didn't feel it, but maybe that's what woke me up so early this morning?  That area is a hot-spot for quakes, and they even had a tsunami there about 25 or 30 years ago?
I'm sure that a whole lot of decorated Christmas trees were knocked over!

Jenny - So good to hear that you saw a new orthopedist, who is willing to help you!  Even a small amount  of movement will be a big improvement for you.  Younger daughter Sandy, is the one who is now living in Palm Springs area.  This was my older daughter, who now lives in Mariposa, located just outside of Yosemite.

Callie - I was/am also a big fan of all the dancers you mentioned.  Ann Miller was so good!  She was always the second-lead in most of the musicals she was in, but always had a big showy number!  Did you happen to see the musical "Sugar Babies", with Ann M and Mickey Rooney?    It was wonderful, I thought.  They were both retired, and getting pretty old when they did that show on Broadway, and then traveled across the country.  It was highly entertaining, funny, and they could both still dance!

MaryPage - I don't remember Steph?    We must not have posted on any of the same boards?   Where did she post?

RAMMEL

Only two people show up on the Member List whose name starts with or is "Steph".  Neither of them had continued to post.

Good Morning,

Jenny, Hooray for the new surgeon!  We said we were going to"the show" - maybe because the movie theatre was literally "the only show in town".  ;)

Marilyne, I don't think "Sugar Babies" came to OKC but I would have enjoyed seeing it. Do you remember about what year that would have been?

The "Siberian Express" that weather gurus have been talking about for the past "umpteen" days seems to be moving in.  Supposed to be at its worst from Thursday until Sunday. Just hope the out-of-state Grands get home safely - particularly Miss Ellen's flights from NYC.

Stay warm and well, Baiters and Tacklers

PatH2

MaryPage, I'm so glad you mentioned Steph. I've wondered how she was doing. I don't remember where she posted on SeniorNet either, but afterwards we overlapped in SeniorLearn in Mysteries and Science Fiction, where she introduced me to some of my favorites.  I really admired how she faced some horrific life tragedies.  So she still has Corgis.  That's how I think of her.

RAMMEL

We also said "we were going to "the show". Which usually got the response, "Which one?". There were three readily accessible to us, and at least four more that were not easy for us to get to - until we were older and could drive. Plus those in nearby Cities.

Callie - I just looked it up, and see that Sugar Babies opened on Broadway on October 8, 1979 and closed on August 28, 1982 after 1,208 performances.  Not sure of the date that we saw it?  We saw the original cast performance, in San Francisco, so probably right after it closed on Broadway.    Mickey and Ann were wonderful!

Rick - I think I said "picture show", when I was quite  young, and only went to children's movies, like  Pinocchio or Wizard of Oz with my Mother.  Probably that's the term she used?   When I got older and went with friends to the Saturday matinee,  we all said, "the show".  We also had three theaters that we could walk to.  Nobody ever dropped us off and then picked us up.    We walked everywhere.

Tomereader1

Anyone remember the "Saturday Matinees"? We could get in for 50 cents or a dollar.  They had a western, a serial, many cartoons and previews.  I went to quite a few, mother would take me and drop me off, pick me up when it was over.  Nobody would dare do that today! Even went once or twice with a boyfriend. His folks would bring him and pick him up, too! This was in JUnior High or Freshman High School.  We didn't have that elusive Drivers License yet.

I sure do.  For a while I worked as an usher in a local theater. Saturday afternoon was it. A million kids in the children's section - all screaming when the Cartoons came on (a 1 hr devoted to Cartoons). I remember one time there was a fairly elder lady in the adult section who got my attention and complained about all the noise the kids were making. All I could do was to tell her it was Saturday afternoon and it was the Kid's Show - can't make them be quiet. Mrs Evans, the Matron, did a great job of keeping the kids in line, but she didn't care how much cheering they did for the Cartoons. --- The fun old days.

Absolutely!  When I was in elementary school, there were two movie theaters in town. Sometimes, on Saturday mornings, I would go with a friend to a Western movie at one theater, go home with her to have lunch, and then go to a "jungle" movie at the other theater.  Tickets were 10¢ (until you were 12 when you had to pay the adult price of 35¢), popcorn was a nickel and a "big" Coke was another dime.

As teenagers, it was "the thing" on Saturday nights to gather downtown at a drug store that had a soda fountain and go to "the show" at the other theater, which had a balcony that the teenagers more or less took over.  The only time I ever saw adults sitting there was when two parents were checking on their daughter (not mine/me!  ;D ).

Good memories!

MarsGal

I remember that Dad used to tell us how he managed to get into the movies for children's prices until he was 16. I tried to tie his record but didn't make it. I've forgotten how old I was when I had to start paying adult prices. We used to walk the five or six blocks to the Saturday matinee to watch the likes of Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Ma and Pa Kettle. Of course, the soda fountain was just a few doors away. My favorites? Root Beer Float and the Chocolate Ice Cream Soda with the whipped cream and cherry on top.

The very first evening movie I was allowed to go to on my own (with friends, of course) was Elvis Presley's Flaming Star (1960). It was the only movie he did, that I know of, where he didn't do a singing routine in it. I was not a big Presley fan, but I did enjoy that movie.

The porch pirates are becoming a problem, but so far, not in my neighborhood just yet. Someone caught on camera a car cruising the neighborhood right across the creek from me with two hooded guys(?) casing cars with unlocked doors. Unfortunately, the camera didn't get a good shot at the license number on the car they drove.

Marilyne, my sister alerted me to the earthquake last night. The first thing I asked was if it was near your area.

Looks like we are going to miss the big snow, but we will get rain and ice rain today and tomorrow, cloudy with maybe left-overs on Saturday, and sunny on Christmas Day but very cold.

Marilyne

MarsGal - I was aways questioned by the ticket booth lady, as to my age.  They refused to believe I was under 12 years old, and insisted that I pay adult price for the matinee ticket.  I was tall and skinny for my age, but definitely not mature looking.  Also I was not assertive, and was humiliated when they accused me of being a liar.  I mostly remember the dread, as I was standing in line, on Saturday afternoon waiting to pay my 12 cents, wondering if I would be questioned again in front of all the kids.

Finally, (I don't know how long it took me) - I told my mother.  She went with me, with my Birth Certificate, and showed it to the Ticket Lady.  (That was embarrassing too!) ha ha   Shortly thereafter I FINALLY turned 12 years old.  I was relieved that I could pay full price, and no more questions!   Also, I stopped growing, and everyone else caught up with me or passed me in height.

Then many years later, when I was in college and was 21 and old enough to drink, I was always the one who got "carded"!  I didn't mind it at all then.     ::)

MaryPage

PatH2, I still cannot recall where Steph posted myself, but we all posted in so many different forums back in the day.  She was known as the Corgi Lady, but the fact is, she is now in a Continuing Care Community in the Villa area of Florida, and has no Corgis.

"Independent living. I still drive, but love a housekeeper, meal a day and going to plays and concerts and out to eat in our buses.. I get to just be me.. Still have a small rescue dog.. Rusty is a longhaired Dachshund.. very old and gentle. First lap dog I have ever had.. Will be 85 next week..Whew.. Steph"

So there you are.  Steph and I have always kept up.
I am surprised she is not more remembered here, as she was very active for what I remember as a long time.  But mine is a battered memory now.

Tomereader1: Saturday MORNING moving picture shows is my memory.  When I was twelve and in the 7th grade.  All the family were off taking part in the War effort (WWII) and I was living with my grandmother.  She belonged to some farm community thing called the Home Demonstration Club.  She was their Treasurer, and handled the cash for a sale of their farm goods held every Saturday in Winchester, Virginia.  We would get there, and she would give me a quarter out of her own purse.  I took off for Woolworh's Five & Dime, where I bought a whole pound of pre-packaged jelly beans for ten cents.  Then I hopped across the street to the Palace Theatre, where for another ten cents I bought a ticket to a double feature; almost always a couple of Westerns.  Gene Autry and the like.  Then 15 minutes of Flash Gordon, 15 minutes of a newsreel, 15 minutes of a cartoon, and a 15 minute documentory or other serial.  We were all kids, perfectly safe, our folks all knew exactly where we were, and we had a ball.  After the shows were done, I went to Tate's Ice Cream Parlour next door and spent my last five cents on an extremely generous cone; usually French Vanilla.  The cone was not round, but rectangular in shape, and they filled it with a shovel like tool.
Does anyone remember those?

I remember a "cone" like that, but the one I recall was for a "Mello-Roll" (Not likely correct name/spelling). It was a cylinder of ice cream with a paper wrap around it.

I remember a shovel like tool being used to fill a container (pint, quart) from a large container down in the freezer - probably a couple of gallons. That would be the large container from where they used the round scoop to get ice cream for Sundaes or IC Sodas.

Last I heard about Steph was that she moved to N. or S. Carolina. She never came back after that move I don't think. I remember when her posting about the accident and could tell she had a very hard time grieving and trying to gain confidence in herself on her own. Sorry to hear that she no longer has her little companions.

It has just started snowing here but will turn to rain later on. So, a mix of snow and rain is the weather agenda for today and tomorrow. Anything that does not dry by Friday evening will turn into an ice-skating rink. Expecting very cold weather, but dry over the weekend. At least it will be sunny on Sunday. Yea!

I don't remember the shovel-like ice cream scoop, but I do remember the square cones. I don't think they were common here or I have forgotten them.

CallieOK

Good Morning,

MaryPage and Rammel, the only rectangular ice cream I remember were Eskimo Pies and Fudgesicles on sticks.

Marilyne, we were in Oklahoma when "Sugar Babies" was touring and I'm sure we would have gone if it had come to Oklahoma City.

Temperatures are in the single digits, wind chill is way below zero and ground is partially covered with "messy" snow.
I've seen four pairs of cardinals at the bird feeders and a big flock of robins in the front yard.  They'll have to make do with the birdseed that's out there because I'm not sticking my nose out the door or taking a chance of stepping out on "black ice".

Miss Ellen flew in from NYC yesterday "noonish".  No issues with flights or lay-over in St. Louis.  She did say that she was glad she got to the airport well before her 7:00 a.m. flight because the security line was "out the door and around the corner" by the time her flight loaded.
Sir Carson drove up from Texas yesterday afternoon.  So all my chicks are in their Home Nest.  :smitten:

Stay warm and well, Everyone. :snowball:

🎼HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU❣️

I hope you had an extra nice day.  Best wishes for good health and happiness this coming year‼️

Coming in to wish everyone a MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄  I am not sure I will get in here again before ol St. Nick arrives🤪🤪

Last night was stressful for our family as our little four year old Grandson Jonah fell and broke his arm.  They were at his other grandparents home which is between Denver and Colorado Springs, in a remote area.  The local paramedics came to the home and put a splint on it before his mom and dad drove to Children's Hospital in CO Springs. They all stayed at the hospital over night and Jonah had surgery early this morning.  They put three pins in and casted the full arm.  He was released early afternoon and went back to the grandparents home.  He has been resting all day and they still plan to meet the family at Dr. Dave's Home tomorrow here we will do a early gift opening before they head to their home to be there for Santa🥰🥰

Pleasant dreams to ALL 🎄🎄

Merry Christmas Eve to everyone who looks in today!    Hope you all have a nice relaxing day and night.  Turn the Yule log on with the beautiful music playing, and sit back and relax and reminisce about Christmas past.

Jenny - So sorry to hear about little Jonah, falling and breaking his arm!  That will be hard for him to deal with for a couple of days, but he'll adjust to the cast quickly, and will get along fine.    Give him extra hugs, (I know you will!),  and one from me too!

Callie - Belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hope your day was a good one!  Glad all of your family members made it home safely for Christmas!  No big storms in OK, I hope?

CallieOK

Good Morning,

Thank you, Jenny and Marilyne, for the birthday wishes.  It was a Great Day!  Received a beautiful floral arrangement from #1 son/"Crew", #2 son/dil brought a delicious dinner, the 3 Grands PM'ed a Facebook Message of them singing "Happy Birthday", the sun shone all day.....and my check book balanced with the bank statement!

No storms here as in other areas but temperatures have been well below freezing and wind chill has been below zero for several days.  It's a bit warmer today and supposed to be above freezing tomorrow.

Will be at #1 son's for Christmas Day.  They're now in that stage between aging parents and grown children who have to split time with other families.  (Miss Emily and Sir Carson have "Significant Others"  ;) ) So easier to have things at their house.  Fine with me!!
I'm making a fruit salad and the chocolate dessert that everybody wants for holidays.

Merry Christmas to Each of You.  Stay warm and well. :christmastree:

Oh Callie!  I had your birthday down on my calendar, and then forgot to look at it.

Happy Belated!  Oh, do forgive me on the grounds of Good Intentions and real heartfelt feelings.  Love to you.

Jenny, what a sad story for your baby grandson.  Hope everything comes up roses for him!

Son Rob came by this afternoon with his daughter and two granddaughters.  Lovely visit. The older one is now in college, and has turned into such a beauty it absolutely staggered me.
I never guessed that was going to happen.  I have not seen her since my 90th birthday back in 2019, since she lives in Alabama.

Merry Christmas to all!
